hi :) i hope u don’t mind me asking but what are your favorite books? or books you would recommend? i’m in a reading slump right now and i feel like you have really good taste. don’t feel obligated to answer if u don’t feel like it. love your blog<333
Hello! Thank you for such a wonderful question, and apologies that it's taken me so long to answer! I've been travelling, and I wanted access to my books at home to do the question justice. So here are my favourites among the books I've read in the last two or so years - I decided to stick just to novels for the sake of being concise, haha.
(All summaries via Goodreads)
Tumblr media
Simone de Beauvoir, The Woman Destroyed (1967) - 'Three long stories that draw the reader into the lives of three women, all past their first youth, all facing unexpected crises.'
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Hardwick, Sleepless Nights (1979) -
"In Sleepless Nights, a woman looks back on her life—the parade of people, the shifting background of place—and assembles a scrapbook of memories, reflections, portraits, letters, wishes, and dreams. An inspired fusion of fact and invention, this beautifully realized, hard-bitten, lyrical book is not only Elizabeth Hardwick's finest fiction but one of the outstanding contributions to American literature of the last fifty years."
Tumblr media
Joan Didion, Play It As It Lays (1970) - "A ruthless dissection of American life in the late 1960s, Play It as It Lays captures the mood of an entire generation, the ennui of contemporary society reflected in spare prose that blisters and haunts the reader. Set in a place beyond good and evil - literally in Hollywood, Las Vegas, and the barren wastes of the Mojave Desert, but figuratively in the landscape of an arid soul - it remains more than three decades after its original publication a profoundly disturbing novel, riveting in its exploration of a woman and a society in crisis and stunning in the still-startling intensity of its prose."
Tumblr media
Alan Warner, Morvern Callar (1995) - "Morvern Callar, a low-paid employee in the local supermarket in a desolate and beautiful port town in the west of Scotland, wakes one morning in late December to find her strange boyfriend has committed suicide and is dead on the kitchen floor. Morvern's reaction is both intriguing and immoral. What she does next is even more appalling. Moving across a blurred European landscape-from rural poverty and drunken mayhem of the port to the Mediterranean rave scene-we experience everything from Morvern's stark, unflinching perspective."
Tumblr media
Kate Chopin, The Awakening (1899) - "When first published in 1899, The Awakening shocked readers with its honest treatment of female marital infidelity. Audiences accustomed to the pieties of late Victorian romantic fiction were taken aback by Chopin's daring portrayal of a woman trapped in a stifling marriage, who seeks and finds passionate physical love outside the confines of her domestic situation."
Tumblr media
Jeanette Winterson, Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit (1985) - "This is the story of Jeanette, adopted and brought up by her mother as one of God's elect. Zealous and passionate, she seems destined for life as a missionary, but then she falls for one of her converts."
Tumblr media
Antonia White, Frost In May (1933) - "Nanda Gray, the daughter of a Catholic convert, is nine when she is sent to the Convent of Five Wounds. Quick-witted, resilient, and eager to please, she adapts to this cloistered world, learning rigid conformity and subjection to authority. Passionate friendships are the only deviation from her total obedience."
Tumblr media
Daša Drndić, Belladonna (2012) - "Andreas Ban is a writer and psychologist, above all an intellectual full of empathy, but his world has been collapsing for years, and when he goes to a miserable retirement and learns that he is ill, he takes a fresh look at the fragments of his life and the lives of his friends. In the fight against illness and old age, Andreas Ban is both cynical and powerful, and while digging through his own past, he encounters stories of the disenfranchised, the persecuted, the helpless... and in the process uncompromisingly deals with the most diverse taboos."
Tumblr media
Iris Murdoch, The Bell (1958) - "A lay community of thoroughly mixed-up people is encamped outside Imber Abbey, home of an enclosed order of nuns. A new bell, legendary symbol of religion and magic, is rediscovered. Dora Greenfield, erring wife, returns to her husband. Michael Mead, leader of the community, is confronted by Nick Fawley, with whom he had disastrous homosexual relations, while the wise old Abbess watches and prays and exercises discreet authority. And everyone, or almost everyone, hopes to be saved, whatever that may mean....Iris Murdoch's funny and sad novel has themes of religion, the fight between good and evil, and the terrible accidents of human frailty."
Tumblr media
Joshua Cohen, The Netanyahus (2021) - "Corbin College, not-quite-upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian - but not an historian of the Jews - is coopted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host, to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies."

It’s interesting that all of the negative things that are said about Kate come from Mallory. Mallory paints her in a negative light that we believe at first even though Kate seems like she was a good person and trying hard. Jeanette desperately wants to be her friend over her and Vince doesn’t seem to have anything against her. The negative ideas about Kate come from Mallory. Maybe Mallory wasn’t the only one in town who felt that way but in the context of the show, she gives us as an audience ideas about Kate that just aren’t true. It’s just ironic I guess is what I’m saying 😂 long winded speech over!
No, no, you’re totally right! We know that Jeanette was jealous of Kate, but Mallory could’ve been just as jealous of Kate as Jeanette, although Mallory didn’t resort to recreating every aspect of Kate’s life for herself.
(Side note, does it bother anyone else that Jaime went right back to Kate when she was found? As if he didn’t give up on Kate being found and then dated the suspicious person who was copying his missing girlfriend and snuck out and lied to Kate and left her alone after she was rescued just to kiss the girl who his abducted girlfriend claimed saw her being held captive and didn’t help her?)
I think that Mallory was jealous of Kate because of what could have been. Mallory remembered going to Kate’s third birthday party and also specifically remembered the pony. You wouldn’t remember details like that unless it meant something to you. Kate was popular and pretty, so it was easy to hate her, but she was also genuinely nice which made it hard to hate her but also made it easier because it meant that she truly had everything, including parents who were together and money.
Honestly, while unexpected, I like that Mallory and Kate are friends and I like how they reconnected. I also love how Mallory supports Kate. She never brings up Jeanette, even just to trash talk her. She seems to really care about Kate and isn’t being her friend just to get back at Jeanette. It shows growth on Mallory’s part.

Same Game, Greener Pastures - 1/? | Cruel Summer fanfiction
A/N: Fic 1 of 2, here we go!
...
Synopsis:  College!AU - Kate and Jeanette never went to the same high school. Instead, they meet in college, and the stakes are just as high.
...
Chapter 1 -
Her face stayed pressed to the glass for the duration of the car ride. She could’ve driven herself, really, but her parents were the sentimental type, and they wanted to drive her. Or, at the very least, her dad drove her. Her mom drove separately, so that she could have a car at school, and they could still return home. It was a little strange not having them both in the car, but they’d had their teary goodbye before leaving the house, so aside from helping her unpack once they got to her dorm room, she supposed they didn’t both need to be there.
“Whatcha thinking, doodlebug?”
Jeanette pulled herself away from the window and turned to look at her dad. She smiled innocently.
“Nothing. I’m just excited to get there.”
He smiled.
“Well, you know, you will have to pay attention to your studies too. Can’t be all partying all the time just because Vince and Mallory will be going to the same school as you.”
“I know, Dad. I know.” She laughed. “Still, it’s a new chapter. I’m putting high school behind me. This is a chance for me to possibly be popular. No one here knows me except for Vince and Mal. Who knows what could happen?”
He was silent for a moment.
“You know, there is more to life than being popular, Jeanie. Real, true friends like Vince and Mallory, they don’t come around every day. And you didn’t find them by being popular.”
“Of course.” She sobered up, then looked out the window again. She couldn’t help feeling that this conversation would’ve gone differently if it had been her mom she’d been talking to.
Before she could wonder anything further though, they turned the corner on the road and there before them lay the large university building she’d been dreaming of re-entering ever since she came here for a tour the year before.
“We’re here,” she said, excitedly sitting up in her seat.
Beside her, her dad smiled and nodded.
“Yes, we are.” He paused then looked at her. “Should we go to your dorm first? Do you know if Mallory is here yet?”
“She said she’d be here early. I’m sure she’s here.” She squealed in anticipation. “Ah, I’m so excited. This is going to be great!”
He chuckled and entered the school parking lot, weaving around the winding roads until they reached the parking lot for her dorm room. As soon as they were parked, Jeanette bolted from the car and ran into the building. Her dad was slower to join her.
There was a long table set up in the lobby of the dorm room where several volunteers sat to help students check in and get the keys to their dorm room. Jeanette got in line immediately. She didn’t have to wait long to get to the front.
“Jeanette Turner,” she told the woman once it was her turn.
The woman was older and seemed to be almost annoyed by having to be there that day. Jeanette wasn’t thwarted though. She was too excited.
In a matter of minutes she had received her key and some paperwork indicating where and when she needed to be for orientation and how to go about getting her student ID.
She spun around and almost ran right into her dad. She saw just past him that her mom was coming through the door. She ran past her dad to her mom and excitedly explained what she’d just received. Then she turned around and headed for the stairs.
“What, is there not an elevator in this place?” her dad joked lightly.
Jeanette’s mom swatted at him playfully, then they both followed their daughter.
“Elevators take too long. And besides, I’m on the third floor.”
“Of course you are,” her dad said, imagining already how carrying all her stuff up the stairs would be more draining and time-consuming than he’d hoped it would be.
Another swat from his wife though, and he shut his mouth on the subject.
Jeanette was to the third floor before her parents, and all the way down the hall when with shaky, excited fingers, she turned the key in the lock and opened the door.
“Mallory!”
Mallory sprung to her feet from the bottom bunk bed where she’d started to unpack, and with a huge grin on her face, hugged her best friend.
“Hey!”
“Have you seen Vince?” Jeanette asked, eager to be with both of her best friends at the same time.
She shook her head. “Not yet. But I told him where we were gonna be. I don’t know if they’ll let him in because he’s a guy, but…”
“Why wouldn’t they?” She laughed. “It’s moving day. Everyone’s allowed in on moving day.”
She glanced around the room, taking in her surroundings. Aside from the bunkbed, there were two desks on the other side of the room and a small mini fridge in the corner. On top of the fridge was a microwave. Then there was one small dresser and a closet.
“This place is awesome,” Jeanette said.
“Kinda small,” Mallory drawled. “But yeah, it’ll work.”
Jeanette rolled her eyes.
“It’s perfect. We have everything we need.”
“No TV, but they have a lounge with a TV on the first floor. We’ll probably be there more than we’ll be here anyway.”
Jeanette nodded, agreeing.
A knock at the door startled them both. Jeanette reached for the knob, certain who would be there and too slow to change the words that were tumbling out of her mouth before they did.
“Vince!”
Her dad blinked slowly, and her mom fought a smile.
“No, it’s just us. Your parents.” He craned his neck to look beyond his daughter. “Hello, Mallory.”
“Hello, Mr. Turner. Jeanette’s mom.”
Jeanette turned around to look at her strangely but stepped to the side to let her parents in.
“This is nice,” Jeanette’s mom commented. “And look, how cute is this fridge?”
“It’s called a mini fridge, honey,” Jeanette’s dad said, which got him an eye roll from his wife and a little bit of a glare from his daughter. Mallory tried not to laugh.
“Well, do you think we could start bringing in your stuff?” he asked his daughter after he’d thoroughly inspected the place and his wife had stopped cooing over everything.
“Yeah, totally,” Jeanette piped up, then turned to Mallory. “We’ll be ri-”
“You want to come help, Mallory?” he asked the blonde, cutting off Jeanette, who sent him a wide-eyed stare that he ignored.
“Of course, Jeanette’s dad.” Mallory strutted out into the hall. “There’s nothing more I’d enjoy doing.”
He got some jabs from his wife and daughter, but he knew they’d get the moving in done in half the time if they had a little help. Plus, Mallory had known Jeanette since middle school. Surely she could afford to do her part in instances like this.
“Great,” he said, and followed the ladies to the staircase leading downstairs.
A car door opened on the opposite side of the parking lot, and out stepped Kate Wallis. On the driver’s side exited Jamie Henson, her boyfriend of four years, who had insisted on driving her to their new school instead of her parents.
Kate was stunning. She was beautiful, blonde, well-off, and had Jamie wrapped around her finger. It hadn’t been her idea to drive with him, but she hadn’t been put-off by it either. She loved Jamie, and he adored her too. It had been a miracle that they had gotten both of their luggage into his car, but somehow, they’d managed.
Jamie looked over the car at his girlfriend and smiled, waiting for her to meet his gaze.
“You ready for this?”
“Are you?”
He shook his head.
“Nah, not really.” He laughed. “But with you, yeah, I am.”
She smiled. He was so over the top sometimes, but she loved that about him.
He shut his door, rounded the car, and pulled her into his arms.
“Let’s do this,” he said, then lowered his lips to hers in a sweet kiss.
Kate turned with him and they walked into the building, joined at the hip, passing on their way a quartet of people. A pair of parents it looked like and two younger girls possibly her and Jamie’s age. She didn’t pay them much attention though. There were so many people here today moving in. They were just some of many.
“Long line,” Jamie commented, stopping just as they entered the building, because that was how long the line had become.
“You should go to your dorm and get checked in,” Kate suggested. “This could take a while.”
“No, I don’t want to leave you,” he said instantly, holding her tighter.
“I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me. As soon as I get my key and whatever else, I’ll come find you. You’re just one building over, right?”
His brows furrowed, but he couldn’t help being honest.
“Yeah, I think so.”
She smiled.
“Are you sure about this?” he asked.
“Positive.” She laughed and kissed him again. “Now, go.”
Reluctantly, he untangled from her and made his way out the door just as the line was starting to move forward. He was so distracted by watching his girlfriend, he didn’t even realize he was bumping into another girl trying to come through the door.
“Ah!”
He spun around.
“Oh, my God, I’m so sorry.”
“No, no, it’s okay, that was all me.”
She was all curls and fumbling with her glasses, but she had a brilliant smile as she fought to make eye contact and failed most of it. It made him smile.
Shaking himself free of the brief reverie she had him under, he pushed the door open further so she could walk through. Another girl who gave him a snooty look followed her, and two adults who looked like parents to one of the girls, probably the first one if he had to guess.
He smiled politely until they’d all gone through and then dashed out to head to his own dorm building to get what was needed so he could rejoin his girlfriend again and help her unpack.

JEANETTE YOU EVIL WICKED NASTY BITCH
#OH MYYYYY GODDDDD#see I felt like what we saw in episode 9 was just too easily resolved for me#cause it totally pushed this narrative that Kate was 100% wrong and Jeanette was right#and the way this show constantly pushes the theme of perspective onto us I knew there had to be more#and my GOD the finale delivered more#now onto the three big reveals#mallory being the one that saw kate yet kate mistaking her for jeanette was a good reveal#it makes sense why both were so hellbent about their side of the story#and the thing with the bike in episode 2 makes more sense to me cause when I watched I remember thinking to myself#oh thats an interesting detail she took her bike but I didn’t think much of it#so I kind of love how this small detail came together#and mallory as much as I don’t like her I get why she withheld the truth to a certain extent#you know she saw kate and kate saw her but it was in the dark#and she just assumed martin had a girlfriend and then when she found out Kate was in the house it all made sense to her#but she couldn’t say anything cause otherwise she would have told the world that kate was upstairs in martin’s house#however I do think mallory should have at least told Kate that she knew this information#oh and also I correctly predicted that Kate and Mallory would date#but I still don’t like Mallory she’s a good friend to Kate but shes such a negative influence#MOVING ON the Annabelle reveal was quite underwhelming#okay annabelle is a gun and in the end kate shot martin I could’ve guessed that#THE THIRD REVEAL OH MY GODDDDD#IT WAS SO CLEVER#SO JEANETTE DIDN’T SEE KATE#BUT... SHE HEARD HER#SHE HEARD HER IN THE BASEMENT IN 1994 AND THE EVIL BITCH DIDN’T SAY ANYTHING#GENIUS IT WAS SUCH A GOOD PLOT TWIST#cause before this I was like so either was kate was wrong I can see why she thought it was jeanette but in the end Jeanette was right#BUT NOW THAT WE KNOW THAT SHE WENT IN THE HOUSE HEARD HER BEGGING TO BE RESCUED IN THE BASEMENT#IGNORED IT AND EVEN WORSE SMILED  AT HER CRIES FOR HELP... Sixth and final commercial break! Sorry that this took longer to compile; as usual the last few minutes drops a bombshell that sends me into overthinking.
-Jeanette’s brother’s crush is Kate’s step sister?? What in the Romeo and Juliette is going on
-Yikes watch Jeanette regret telling her bro to go for it
-Speaking of, I don’t even know her brother’s name lol. He and Jaime and Jamie’s friend (whose name I don’t remember either) all look alike and I’m struggling to keep track of who’s who
-Ok Kate’s stepsister being in the chat room is both good and bad. Good because it shows she cares about Kate and it means Kate will get the chance to vent and feel supported in the way she needs/feels comfortable with BUT what if her stepsister turns against her? What if it’s used as evidence to disprove her? I hope Kate isn’t too trusting of who she thinks is another survivor because she already got burned from trusting Harris
-Oh no and her stepsister told Jeanette’s brother about her username (maybe not directly but what if he connects the dots?)
-Did I see boxes of tampons when Kate woke up in the basement? Harris gives me conflicting feelings as to whether he’s stupid or not. Like he didn’t expect Kate to fight back and looked incapable of winning a physical fight against her but at the same time he knew how to poison food and manipulate her psychologically from the start? And back to the tampons, did he panic and buy everything because he’s never held a girl captive before or was he very extensive in his planning? Sorry if this makes no sense lol. Kinda like how Joe Goldberg in You was both so bad at being bad but also so good at being bad?
-Couldn’t someone see into the basement through the windows? I suppose it would be weird for people to creep onto private property and peer into basement windows though without a reason
-I really hope the tapes aren’t destroyed. Kate doesn’t need another thing to go wrong
-Also I hope the tapes don’t contradict Kate.
-Also also the tapes reminded me of 13 Reasons Why and at first I was like oh nooo not this again but then it’s said that it’s her therapy tapes and I was like ohhhh ok so it’s legit and it’s not an unhealthy coping mechanism or an aesthetic choice that glamourises suicide notes like in 13RW
-WAIT ANNABELLE IS REAL? I mean was I wondering why she picked that name for her ghost story? Yes. Was I still shocked? Also yes.
-OH NO WAIT WAIT I HOPE IM WRONG EVEN THOUGH I LOVE BEING RIGHT BECAUSE THIS WOULD BE TOO TRAGIC. Is Annabelle another grooming victim? Is Annabelle the name of a gun that Harris was going to use to kill Kate and himself to avoid consequences a la murder suicide? Did Kate give birth during her drugged induced time being held captive?? Did she need all those tampons? If they even were tampons, I need to go back and pause. Was she so malnourished and/or stressed that her period stopped? Or did that bastard rape her and get her pregnant?! But then what happened to the baby? I may be totally off, but then again Kate’s family and the town are acting way too causal about what happened so anything is possible especially with this show
-Wait if Harris’s story about his dad was true then it means he also died via gunshot, albeit it wasn’t self inflicted in his case. Is it bad that I hope his story about his dad is true so that it means Harris died of the very thing that scarred him? Because that would be ironic poetic justice.
-GUYS IM SO SORRY MY MIND IS MAKING TOO MANY CONNECTIONS. What if Harris killed his dad? And that’s why he didn’t want to participate in the shooting because he didn’t want people to know he could handle a gun and be capable of using it for violence? I want to know his backstory just for the sole purpose of then having even more reasons to hate him. And don’t worry, this blog will stay a Martin Harris hate blog. He can NEVER be redeemed.
