“Nice and neat, tragedy. Restful, too. In a drama, with its traitors, its desperate villains, its innocent victims, avengers, devoted followers and glimmers of hope, death becomes something terrible, a kind of accident. You might have arrived in time with the police. But tragedy's so peaceful! For one thing, everybody's on a par. All innocent! It doesn't matter if one person kills and the other is killed - it's just a matter of casting. And above all, tragedy's restful, because you know there's no lousy hope left. You know you're caught, caught at last like a rat in a trap, with all heaven against you. And the only thing left to do is shout - not moan, or complain, but yell out at the top of your voice whatever it was you had to say. What you've never said before. What perhaps you didn't even know till now… And to no purpose - just so as to tell it to yourself... to learn it, yourself. In drama you struggle, because you hope you're going to survive. It's utilitarian - sordid. But tragedy is gratuitous. Pointless, irremediable. Fit for a king!” —Jean Anouilh, Antigone

[ID: 3 sections of text from a play. They read as follows, 1: “Tragedy is restful; and the reason is that hope, that foul, deceitful thing, has no part in it. There isn't any hope. You're trapped. The whole sky has fallen on you, and all you can do about it is to shout. Now don't mistake me: I said "shout": I did not say groan, whimper, complain. That, you cannot do. But you can shout.” 2: “Creon- Be quiet! If you could only see how ugly you are, shrieking those words! / Antigone- Yes, I am ugly!” 3: “Creon- Antigone! The anteroom is full of people! Do you want them to hear you? / Antigone- Open the doors! Let us make sure they can hear me!” End ID.]

KREON : She’s the one who wanted to die. None of us was strong enough to convince her to live. I understand now, Antigone was made to be dead. She herself might not have known so, but Polyneikes was nothing but an excuse. When she had to give it up, she immediately found something else. What mattered to her was to refuse and to die.
CHORUS : Kreon, she’s a child.
KREON : What would you like me to do for her ? Condemn her to live ?
— Antigone, Jean Anouilh (my translation)
