forgive the brief jesus chris superstar rant but. there is a very important difference between the pharisees being villains and the pharisees being antagonists. they're technically antagonists because they're actively working against the interests of our protagonist, but i don't believe they should ever be played as villains. they're not evil or bad or wrong. they're terrified just like literally everyone else in the show is, and their actions are completely justified. to me that's the entire point of the musical. it's not about christianity; it's about the impact the roman empire's brutal and violent imperialism had on everyone on all levels. including jesus and judas, but also including the pharisees, and even herod and pilate. when a powerful coloniser forces their presence on innocent people they are the only winners. everyone else suffers, even the puppet kings and high priests who look like they're reaping some sort of benefit from it all. that's roman propaganda. the romans kept native rulers like herod and caiaphas in power to maintain the illusion of provincial autonomy, and keep populations appeased and therefore under control. everyone in the show is acting out of fear of the romans. the one roman character we do see (pilate) is acting out of fear of his own emperor. it makes no sense to cast the pharisees as two dimensional Bad Guys, especially when the same productions that do that usually offer a sympathetic portrayal of pilate. it would be so easy to stage and direct a production in a way that makes it obvious that the pharisees are doing what they're doing because they truly have no choice, and not because they're pure evil and want to kill jesus for the sake of it. it's not only an antisemitic trope but also undermines a really important theme of the musical. if you can see the humanity in the violent roman governor installed forcefully on conquered land then you can afford some humanity for the pharisees too. they are victims of pilate and victims of rome just like everyone else

The last tribute alive receives a life of ease back home, and their district will be showered with prizes, largely consisting of food. All year, the Capitol will show the winning district gifts of grain and oil and even delicacies like sugar while the rest of us battle starvation.

“Are you sure you’re my shixiong?” Really a rhetorical question, but the man was claiming to be the Yiling Laozu so…
Based off the response to the sketch, we all seem to like Jiang Cheng terrorizing knock off Wei Wuxian, who may or may not be into it.

i don’t hear ppl talk about judas’ costuming in the jcs 2012 bway revival enough (well no one really talks about this production at all but i’ve ranted about that already) and i really feel like it’s an important part of his character and his story??? i take it as his entire outfit being symbolic for how frightened and paranoid but also how traditional he is because his clothes are literally blue. blue is meant to be a color of protection and divinity in judaism. he wants to be close with god and he wants to keep himself and everyone safe more than anything to the point where he’s cloaking himself in things he knows will ensure that. i mean he literally wears a hamsa for protection, too??? it’s facing right side up so that’s definitely why he’s wearing it. the only question i have when it comes to that is, is he wearing it to protect him from himself or to protect himself from others? maybe both? honestly i could see that one going either way. but none of the other characters have any noticeable signs of keeping these kinds of things close to them. he’s the only one. and it just further strengthens how serious he is about his fear and how helpless he feels when he’s watching everyone get lost in the movement while he still has his concerns and his hesitance about it all. he’s still thinking of them and their safety. i just- i appreciate this costuming choice sm bc we can see so much of his character here. bluedas is blue for a reason i think (or maybe i just read to deeply into this and they just had a lot of blue fabric lying around but i like my idea better) i mean paul tazewell man. he knew what he was doing ( obv he’s brilliant. he did the costuming for hamilton, in the heights, and the wss film too) but yeah. absolutely obsessed with this. look at him. that’s my best friend who also has an anxiety disorder to the point it’s symbolized in his clothes.

the 1973 jesus christ superstar movie is objectively better BUT the 2000 movie makes it even more extremely homoerotically charged

Judas Iscariot, "Heaven on Their Minds”-"Last Supper” Costume (Erik Ruben) Jesucristo Súper Estrella Production 2019-2020+2021 (1/3)
Costume Notes: It is another red Judas. His costume is pretty much just the cowl neck tank top with legging like trousers. The tattoos are not part of the costume and is simply what the actor has. The jewelry also seems to be personal jewelry though I am unsure about the silver ring he wears. The patterned trousers are more detailed than they look in the above picture and actually have eyelets with lacing which is more visible in the pictures in part 2 of this post series.
Production Notes: Erik Ruben has played Judas before in a 2001 Mexico production and wanted to return s Judas again and thus after hearing from theatre producer Alejandro Gou was doing JCS he joined and also inputted ideas being part of the production team. The budget seems very high, with rain effects and even a car on stage. It was originally supposed to run from end or 2019 to Easter of 2020 but due to the pandemic they ended it early in 2019. They returned in October of 2021 to finish off the show. I believe the original run was in a tour like format through the major stages/arenas of Mexico but I'm not too sure about the 2021 part whether they did the same.
For Erik Ruben singing as Judas there should be the 2001 cast album songs on YouTube with him as Judas. Also, for the Lost Metro awards the cast sang superstar, so Rubens also sings a few lines here (Rubens also won for best male actor for his Judas). There is a video of "Everything's Alright" posted on YouTube here. There is also an interview with him about this production linked here.

From an asexual lurker: thank you for your ace-aro Jiang Cheng content! I don't even watch 'The Untamed' (it seems far too tragic for me) but I love the angry purple asexual with a magical weapon and an expressive face, and I love your text post memes.
Thank you so much for this ask! <3 I'm glad you enjoy aroace Jiang Cheng as much as a lot of the fandom does. He's the first character in one of my fandoms who I've seen widely headcanoned as being aroace/ace, so he has an extra-special place in my heart.
Going to link both posts here and here as I'm not sure if you saw both *shameless plug*
