Shadow Strive #7

Excellent, action-packed, thought provoking, immersive read that was an excellent addition to this series.

What I liked:

* The team: five intrepid, highly skilled, lethal, dedicated, admirable, and intriguing men that worked together seamlessly

* The bond between the team members, the synchronicity of their actions, the use of their skillsets and their uncanny way of reading one another as well as the situation

* The location and learning more about the geography, people, and politics in Yemen * Being able to see this story as if it were playing out on a big screen in a theater

* Thinking about what it would take to do the job that David and his team undertake as well as the impact it must have on them and their families

* The opportunity the team has to encounter and perhaps neutralize the boogieman they have been chasing

* Thinking about the information shared by someone they questioned and hoping that what he said was fiction and not true in the real world

* How pertinent to current political issues the story is

* Getting to see and catch up with David’s family

* Thinking about what the future of the team might be

What I didn’t like:

* Who and what I was meant not to like

* Thinking about some in power and how easily they made questionable decisions – questionable to me anyway

* Knowing that many of the dark parts of this story actually do happen in real life

Did I like this book? Yes

Would I read more in this series/ by this author? Yes

kasper after tonight's games i am simply laying on the floor thinking about your utterly inspired ot3 of kyle/sheldon/jason. like they are never far from my mind in the first place but. do you think as soon as they got away from the camera on the gm box kyle and jason kissed. do you think on the way to the hotel sheldon was on the bus with the guys wishing he was with them. do you think when they were all finally together they just looked at each other and laughed for joy. who do you think is the little spoon and who is the middle spoon

Jason knows that however much this win means to him, it means more to Kyle.

Listen, these are his boys. He’ll love ‘em forever. Watching John damn-near collapse on the ice after his goal, he wanted more than anything, for a brief moment, to be on the ice with them. But he knows this shit doesn’t happen the way it happens without all the pieces being put into their right place.

Kyle’s jumping up and down, grabbing him for hugs again and again. They can’t even leave the box – he can’t stop yelling enough to compose himself. Yeah, those might be Jason’s boys, but this is Kyle’s team. 

This is a team Kyle crafted by hand; broken men from years of mismanagement, glue guys other teams gave up on, old fucks like Jason who just wanted to come home, starry-eyed rookies who want to be the future of the team. This is a team Kyle put together so, so patiently. He was handed a future and a team that wasn’t in his favor, and he broke it down and built it up again. A kintsugi fucking team; if you’re careful and crafty enough, you can create something beautiful out of something broken.

Jason wraps Kyle in a bear hug and uses every ounce of recently-NHL muscle to pull him in tight. Hopefully, the cameras have moved on, back down to the ice where Sheldon is undoubtedly having a mental breakdown. He’s not really concerned if not. Whispers in his ear: “Tonight.”

The yell Kyle lets out is not unexpected, considering all they’ve been doing for the past ten minutes is yell, but it is uncharacteristically emotional. Kyle heaves a breath. “It’s going to be bad,” he warns.

Kintsugi fucking relationship, too; take two lacquered-together men and take a third man to shape them into something whole and real. Jason’s wanted this for years, but there’s never really a good time to fuck your coach and your GM, no matter how close the three of them circled around it. But if Kyle was the artist who pieced them together, he’s too close to the breakages to see past the points where he can join them together. Time to pull all three of them back and look at the whole. Jason’s retired now. They can stop circling.

“Not if it’s us,” says Jason.

“And Sheldon too,” says Kyle, a statement, not a fact. He doesn’t go most places without Sheldon, but he’s especially not going here alone, Jason knows.

Jason pulls back and gives him a look that hopefully conveys some level of don’t be fucking stupid. Kyle laughs.

Jason lets go of him. They collect their papers and head down to the locker room. Downstairs, the boys are yelling and drinking and yelling more. It’s bad luck, they all know, to celebrate a first round so heavily, but it’s been 18 long years, and everyone had given up on them.

Jason swings around to Sheldon when he can get a chance, which takes a while because the boys drag him in for beers. Sheldon’s leaning against the door frame with a Bud Light, looking so, so happy.

“Kyle told me,” says Sheldon to him. He tips his beer at Jason. Jason settles in next to him.

“Thoughts?”

“Hope I last more than 5 minutes,” says Sheldon contemplatively.

Jason laughs. He tips his beer back at Sheldon. Sheldon’s eyes are light, sparkling the way they do when he’s particularly happy. Jason’s never seen it in a playoff round, though. He looks brighter here in Tampa, tonight.

“It’s going to be bad,” Sheldon warns him, a perfect echo of Kyle.

“Not if it’s us,” says Jason again.

“Kyle said that too.”

“You guys have to have faith in yourself,” Jason protests.

Sheldon laughs. “Yeah, well, maybe now I can.”

Jason wraps an arm around his neck and pulls him in to kiss him on his temple. Across the room, Kyle is deep in conversation with a couple of their rookie forwards, undoubtedly reassuring them that it’s okay to celebrate with the rest of the guys, that they earned this too. The rookies have been looking more and more worried the longer the series went on.

Jason feels unbearably fond. Sheldon is loose under his arm.

Kyle turns away from the rookies when they look less stressed. He looks at Jason and Sheldon. He grins, and raises his bottle.

The three of them drink.

Hockey Cards for Sale!

I have a variety of hockey cards for sale if anyone is interested! Some are older players from the 90s, some are more recent ones. Since they can fit into letter-sized envelopes, I’m selling them for a small amount (mainly just to cover postage and envelopes, especially for those out of Canada). This can be paid through my Ko-Fi (via Paypal), and I’ll give the link for those interested.

Cost depends on where you live (i.e. in Canada or elsewhere), how many cards you want (any more than 5 will be sent in more than one envelope to avoid issues in mailing), and whether you want them sleeved or unsleeved.

Within Canada:

1-5 cards: $2 unsleeved, $3 sleeved

6-10 cards: $3 unsleeved, $4 sleeved

11+ cards: $5 unsleeved, $6 sleeved

Within the US:

1-5 cards: $3 unsleeved, $4 sleeved

Riveting Read ~ Could not put it down ~ Stayed up till 3am reading and couldn’t put it down till I read the last page.

What I liked:

* The team: five intrepid, highly skilled, lethal, dedicated, admirable, and intriguing men that worked together seamlessly.

* Hearing David’s first-person experience and a more omniscient version of the other four team members experiences * The location and learning more about the geography, people, and politics * Being able to see this story as if it were playing out on a big screen in a theater * The bond between the team members, the synchronicity of their actions, the use of their skillsets and their uncanny way of reading one another as well as the situation

* Jelena: local Serbian driver working with the USA in a special way and supporting the group in this book – she and Worthy – one and done or more?

* Hearing what was happening back in the USA at the Op-Cen and the twists and turns there as well as on the ground in Serbia

* Wondering what will happen next AND if Erik Wiesz will ever be brought down

What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like * Knowing that the evil in this book is no doubt truer than we want to believe

Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Definitely Thank you to NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review. 5 Stars

Totally innocuous post for JRWI fans!!

Which characters have you seen be the subject of genuine and in depth discussions of characterisation, motivations, backstories, etc?

^^^ This is a bit of a tricky question to phrase so let me give some examples. An example could be a lengthy essay on a PC's trauma and how it affect their actions in campaign. It could be someone's extensive headcanon of a minor character's backstory. Another example could be someone dumping about a villain's motivations and internal thoughts. Maybe someone just like draws them a bunch and constantly yells BLORBO, idk. Stuff along those lines.

I'm looking for ANY amount discussion, even if it's just one person who is really deranged about a character.
