translated a new chapter of dedede de pupupu na monogatari (also known as kirby manga mania) by hirokazu hikawa! meta knight appearances are a rare treat in this manga, but i always absolutely love hikawa's take on him. a cool, popular DORK.

While everyone was posting about the Tokyo Sports Awards, Okada was focused on a much more important award.

"Today 23:45 TV Asahi "Cream Nantara" Miniskirt Track and Field 2023 Winter Event
By the way, here's the MVP trophy I won last year! Please watch it!"
(The trophy reads "Miniskirt Track and Field 2022 MVP 5/19/2022")
Here's a promotional photo from the event, from a tweet where Okada asks "Will it rain panty-flashing?"

none of this would’ve happened if cube took the jpn market a tiny bit more seriously and not just somewhere to send ptg for cashgrabs with 0 promotions

Seiyuus and Variety Shows
Having watched videos of Seiyuus going on variety shows and performing in those had me thinking of how the entertainment industry in Japan considers as quality content. Someone I watched on youtube had noted, that the mistreatment and humiliation of programme guests- to some extent at an extreme level- is the observed as a norm within the industry. Thus starting these thoughts in relation to seiyuu contents I have consumed in past years.
Variety show hosts tend to talk down to Seiyuus in a inferior manner, and their perception of entertainment is horrifyingly twisted in my point of view. Activities and planning that express lack of consideration for the source material itself , and its intended purpose of promotion really glares through these listed examples I can recall of this very moment.
1. A travel variety show that featured two famous male VAs in Hawaii doing travelling things, and then asking them to beg for food in a market location with just an empty bowl IN ENGLISH for the sake of expressing the kindness of the locals. I was enjoying the programme up till that point. This is pure insult by the looks of it, I could not continue after that at all.
2. Shimono Hiro on multiple cases, and their motives are beyond me:
#1 being told to perform a song recording for his album, where it was set up that a live monkey would be part of a scare plan. This is one way to make it memorable than just a regular recording, and while he was laughing it off, I do not appreciate that they’re committing to potentially give the artist a hard time with their job.
#2 When Demon Slayer was at it’s peak the VAs themselves, including Shimono-san were to perform some exercises with Gurenge in the background, the movements corresponding to their characters. While this is no issue, the variety programmes are taking advantage of the popularity of the VAs themselves and the franchise, and instead chosen to do the most mundane sequences of movements ever. If this isn’t an act of cashing in on clout I don’t know what is. (and don’t get me started on the “Total concentration XXX” trend where they just reference EVERYTHING Demon Slayer just to seem hip- it gets tiring after a while)
3. While not exactly a purely Seiyuu case, but just pitting inexperienced entertainers against seasoned seiyuus in a fake voiceover audition. This performed as a scare (dokkiri) prank, That they find it pleasurable on inflicting psychological stress on others, as if life isn’t hard enough already.
The only instance of Suwabe Junichi appearing on a variety programme, featuring him and Shimono Hiro and Midorikawa Hikaru is though, well executed in my opinion. They were treated with respect and the way it was arranged was well thought out and effective in relation to the franchise promoted. The programme “R’s corner” featured Utapri and otome games at it’s peak, and Suwabe-san actually appeared in person in video format analysing and explaining the tricks and tips behind conveying emotions with just voice delivery alone. Shimono-san would perform the same role too. While Suwabe-san would  also have done a small crossdressing role as a maid, with him just doing some dancing, it is fun and quirky, and extremely related to the intended promotional purpose (and does he look just amazing in it-1000% YES).
Being a Seiyuu comes with a condition of possessing multiple talents and devising ways to make themselves to be more known within the industry. Variety shows and weekly talk programmes (often organised with mainly Seiyuu cast) such as “Say You to Asobi” entirely presented with V activities that had a welcoming and fun aura- That is not at all as uncomfortable as most variety shows would do. And just allowing them the freedom to come up with their own ideas and planning- that’s absolute gold.
One comment from the video stuck with me- that the Japanese view humiliation and the failure of others as a form of self satisfaction and a spectacle to be gazed at- all in it’s sickening and twisted ways. While negativity and shock factor would perform the best in retaining the impression of a celebrity, or the promotional matter in question- where do you draw the line- that are you able to distinguish humiliation and just a light casual laugh that is to a acceptable degree?
Seiyuus demand to be treated with respect too. And putting them in terrible situations is not the way to do it.
END

W A T C H I N G
I wish they weren't cut down to 7-10 minutes.
Probably the one of the cutest show I've ever seen. I wanna hug these little humans. They're braver than I am!
---------------------------------------------
Also many people are turning this show into some kind of societal debate. Or East vs Western cultural living type debate.
I researched the show.
It's been around since 1991. The parents choose the route with the show's runners. They pick the best way which is safest etc. The TV show runners also tell the locals that they will be filming in the area so that they know what's going on.
They have a gaggle of camera men and others following the children.
So some of these dumb sensationalistic writers and bloggers and so forth are writing headlines saying 'they abandon' these kids or 'leaving them to fend for themselves'. That's a complete horseshit lie.
Examples: In one episode in a small rural town they noticed it was taking a girl a long time to get the vegetables. So a camera man nearby said would you like me to help, just then the cabbage came loose. It had gotten dark, so the crew drove a car behind the girl to light her way home.
Another time a boy and girl were on an errand, the boy kept running, and the girl tried to keep up and tripped dropping the meatballs she was carrying and started crying. The two mothers appeared to console the child. So they must have been following with the camera crew incognito from their kids.
So they're not just out there "abandoned" like some dolt headlined it. They're in a controlled environment. They're not gonna let these toddlers get hurt.
Come on. Use your brains a little.
Go watch the show for cute little kids and fun social situations. Don't listen to these articles making the show out to be anything but cute and adorable.
