Keep Watching: Ch 11

Chapter 11
After going through reading the requirements for what I needed for UA, I decided to go for a walk. I was grateful that mom was sleeping at the time. So I didn't have to go through the whole talking with her. As I walked, I couldn't stop smiling. I was still in disbelief that I even got into UA. Or how I got to meet All Might and be given a quirk.
In my excitement, I made my way to the pawnshop. I was even happy at the fact I didn't cross paths with anyone from school. And when I got to the shop, I saw the owner sitting behind the counter. He was reading his paper and had a hot cup nearby. Most likely his afternoon coffee. I tried to keep my excitement down when I reached the counter. That's when the owner looked up. "How's it going, kid?"
"Oh, hi, Uncle." I couldn't stop smiling as I leaned on the counter. "I got into UA."
He folded his paper and placed it down on the counter. "Congrats, kid." I then watched as he headed to the back room. Before long, he returned with a yellow book bag and placed it before me. "Think of this as a gift for getting into that high school."
My smile grew as I grabbed the bag. "Thank you, Uncle."
"Look inside." When I opened the bag, I saw that there were new school supplies. Even a wallet and a key chain. "That key is to a storage locker near UA. And in the wallet is a new station yearly pass. Even gave you a few folding skateboards."
I closed the book bag and threw it over my shoulders as I put it on. "Thanks so much, Uncle." I bowed before him.
"You're welcome, kid. If you study for your driver's license, I could pull a few strings and get that bike you wanted."
"You really mean it?" He nodded before sitting back behind the counter.
"You should probably talk to the twins. I'm sure they got something for you. After all," He took a sip of his coffee. "Don't you need a hero suit for this school?" I quickly nodded and said my goodbyes. With that, I went around to the back ally. There, past a few stairways, was the hidden tattoo shop. Taking a few deep breaths, I stepped inside.
When opening the door, I was greeted by loud, heavy English rock music. And at the far end was Micky, seeming to work on one of his clients. Which meant that his twin, Sydney, was in the back making calls. That was until she stepped out of the back room and spotted me. [ENG] "Yo, Splits! Wha' ya doin' here?"
That's when Micky looked up and waved me over. [ENG] "Splits! Miss ya, homeboy." I couldn't help but shake my head as I approached the twins. Thanks to them, I learned some English to watch the American All Might movies. When I reached the twins, Sydney pulled out one of the nearby chairs. Which I happily sat down in.
Even though they knew Japanese, I was grateful they agreed to only speak English with me. [ENG] "I got in."
[ENG] "Wo! Grats man. So, did the old man give ya the stuff?" I pointed to my bookbag. "Nice." Then I watched as Micky's client got up. Guess even he was going to take a break. "Wait. Ain't it the school that requires a hero get up?" I quirky nodded.
I then watched as Sydney went back to her office. While she was back there, Micky went about asking me what hero name I was thinking about. Even went about if I decided to take him up on his job offer. [ENG] "I'm not too sure about that job. I would have said yes if I didn't get into UA. But I'll still think about it. Maybe after I graduate. Since it sounds amazing. And I don't know what hero name I want yet."
Just then, Sydney came back with a suitcase. [ENG] "Had my guys work on those lame drawings ya had. But no luck, fanboy." She then opened the case and took out what seemed like one of her cyberpunk masks. "They least gave ya the ears. And it only does emojis."
[ENG] "Ain't bad for last-minute work either." I looked at Micky, and he was snickering. "Especially when we had to dumb down everythin."
"What do you mean?" I looked back to Sydney, and she gave me a notebook. As I skimmed through it, I saw how these were plans for a high-tech suit. "Wait! Ya two were planning on giving me something like this?"
Now Sydney was the one chuckling. "Well, ya always helpin' us, and ya wanna be a hero. So, we were gonna help ya out another way if ya ain't get into UA." I couldn't help hugging the notebook, and I smiled at them. "So, when ya start?"
"In a week." The look that went between them was strange, but I ignored it. "Don't worry. I'll still be doing deliveries on my off time." They smiled again.
"Just don't work too hard. And come back when ya ready for the, you know." Micky winked at me before getting back to work. With that, I thanked them again before taking the case and heading home.
As I stepped into the school office, I was surprised to see Deku. What was he doing here? While we sat and waited, I couldn't help but notice he was writing in his notebook. But before I could say anything, the principal stepped in. At that, he was clapping while smiling.
"Congratulations to both of you." He then walked over to Deku. "I'm shocked you even got in, Midoriya. But here we are." What! I then watched as the vice principal hand over a few papers to Deku and then myself. "These are a copy of your transcripts. For your personal records."
The vice principal then approached me and had a second set of papers. "We already sent a copy to UA. But here's your copy of your honor rolls documents." He then had a grumpy look as he side-eye towards Deku. "I do hope they kick that nobody out once they realize he's a fraud." With that, he gave me a smile and walked away.
After the principal sent Deku off, his smile went away. "And here I thought it was difficult to get into that school. What a shame." He then looked over at me. "Even if you are the best this school has to offer, you're also a nobody. I wouldn't be surprised if you got kicked out once they realized how much of a punk you are. Now, be gone, you brat."
As I walked these halls for the last time, the words the principal told me rang in my head. So even he doesn't like me? Why should I even care about that? Why should I be worrying about his approval? It doesn't matter! I got into UA with my own strength, and nobody can take that from me!
When I reached the school entrance, I saw how Deku was leaning against the wall. Why was he still here? And just looking at him reminded me he also got into UA. So I stormed over to him and dragged him to the back of the building. He didn't even put up a fight as I threw him into the wall. "What the fuck, nerd?"
He just stood sitting on the ground and not looking at me. "Congratulations to your too, Kacchan." I picked him up by the collar and pinned him to the wall. It was then that I noticed that his face was all red.
"Nerd!" That's when he looked at me. "I was supposed to be the only one from this dump to get into UA! So, how the fuck!" As I held him, it became harder to breathe. It didn't help when I felt something wet burning down my face. "Damn it!" I dropped Deku and started to turn around.
"What's the matter, Kacchan?" I looked back, and the look Deku held made me so confused. But I simply turned back to him. When I did, I was not expecting him to wipe the tears away from my face. "Did the principal say something after I left?" How did he know? How does he always know these things? I nodded my head.
That's when I saw the sweet face Deku always had changed. It almost took me aback when I heard him lightly growl. I snapped my fingers in his face, and he blinked a few times. Which then had him have his typical sad face. I pinched his cheek. "I'll be fine. He doesn't know what he was talking about."
Deku's smile returned, but not in his eyes. "That's right! Because Kacchan is amazing, and he earned his spot at UA." Then his frown returned. "What did he say?"
"It doesn't matter." The nerd started to walk away. "And where you think you're going? I'm not done talking with you, nerd."
"Nobody speaks badly about Kacchan." He then looked over his shoulder at me. "I don't care about what people say or do to me. But you shouldn't have to deal with that." I quickly rushed over to Deku and threw him against the wall.
"You stop that! He's the past now. We are going to start a new school and never deal with that extra again. So, get out whatever is going through your head." I then took a quick look around the corner before standing before Deku. "Let's go make a wish at the fountain to celebrate our future at UA." With that, Deku's face lit up, and we started to walk to the park.
As we walked, I couldn't get the image of the face Deku held moments ago. I had never seen him like that before. Then again, have I ever seen him that angry? And here I thought I'd seen all the faces that nerd could make. But maybe I was wrong. I have seen him angry before, but never like that. At that, I never heard him growl before. I have seen when he fakes his smiles, which worries me. Yet, I can't do anything because then people would think I'm weak.
When we got to the park's center fountain, I took a deep breath. I looked at Deku and saw him whispering to the yen in his hand. So, I took out my last yen and also whispered my wish. "I wish Deku finds better friends than me." With that, we both seemed to toss our wishes simultaneously.
As we continued walking through the park, we spotted our favorite snack cart. I kept walking, but I heard mumbling behind me. I looked back and saw how Deku had two fish snacks. He then held one out to me while looking away. I took it from him without a word, and we started walking again. The walk was quiet until we reached the corner between our homes. "Thank you, Kacchan."
I looked back at Deku. "What for?" The way the setting sun made him glow was breathtaking. It didn't help with that smile of his.
"Even though I don't get or understand what happened between us over the years. I am so grateful that we could have moments like this." His smile faded to a frown, and tears ran down his face. "Thank you for giving me hope." Before I could say anything, Deku ran towards his home. I was just stunned at what he just said. I gave him hope? That can't be true.

Puzzling Out Compatibility
Despite my reservations on dating after a string of failures and a lack of contact from hopeful suitors (both Shrek and Benoit were preoccupied with further study), I decided to stick it out for a few more months on Hinge and keep on with the search. After a few chats that went nowhere, suitor number 9 scrounged up the courage to ask me out on a date. It helped that we both had quite a few interests in common, although our weekly routines meant that it was a little hard to organise a date that suited the two of us.
Still, I accepted and we made an arrangement to meet up before his shift at work. Our meeting spot? A Japanese restaurant at one of Sydney’s major tourist traps.
Which, to be honest, was a promising start for Mr Game Master. The Japanese food, that is. Not the ‘going to to a popular bourgeois tourist trap.’ I mean, yes, the Westfield shopping centre had plenty of choices when it came to shopping and I was sorely tempted to empty out my entire savings on board games and a squishmellow Snorlax but that’s getting ahead of myself.
I arrived early at the restaurant and took a proper gander at the menu as I waited for Mr Game Master. With a job title like venue manager, I had expected something far more formal but it turned out he was in charge of a VR experience centre. Previously, he had worked in the field of escape rooms but the pandemic had seen quite a few cuts among staff and shut down actual places of work. Unfortunately, Mr Game Master was one of them.
Dressed in a polo shirt with the logo of the company on the left breast, a cosy vest and a loose slacks, I couldn’t help but feel that I was, once again, the overdressed individual. Still, I said little about it as we entered the restaurant to order.
And just like all my dates thus far, I made sure to pay for my own meal. Once we had made our order at the counter (we had both ordered rolls, although I added a side of grilled scallop that had a decent dosing of salt rather than the usual soy sauce and mayonnaise), we started to chat. Conversation was easy enough. Thankfully, Mr Game Master was also keen to let me in a few words rather than simply talk at me about the latest games or whatever else they were hyperfixated on. Which, to be honest, was a nice change of pace.
We talked generally about the rental market, and I put in a few of my observations from friends and family, the dating scene in general and a few other things that came to mind - like games or shows that were still prevalent in the pop culture zeitgeist, travel and being able to speak/ understand our mother tongue as we are both children of immigrants. I learned that he had a sister and that his parents lived in the north-west of Sydney.
It was simple ‘getting-to-know-the-other-person’ kind of conversation. I don’t think there was any immediate attraction, per se, but I must admit I didn’t feel any kind of aversion. Which, I think, is a good sign? Goodness knows I wouldn’t know given my proclivity to supposedly judge individuals at first glance and put up barriers (we’ll get to that when it comes to Suitor Number 10).
Once we had eaten our fill at the Japanese restaurant, we stopped for some gelato before I walked him to his place of work. It was a bit of a strange role reversal but it afforded us more time to talk and make clear our dating goals and/ or expectations. I stressed that I wasn’t someone that instantly fell for anyone and wasn’t entirely sure I’d ever had a crush on anyone, though people in my primary school had said otherwise.
But, although I didn’t tell him this, my experience overseas recently did indicate that I might feel attraction in some form or another. Which often manifests in wanting to be in the vicinity of another and enjoying their company. Unfortunately, this only seems to happen to people that are unavailable for me to actually date and might really just be an indication that I let my guard down more when I know that there’s no real risk of actual heartbreak.
Vulnerability is hard, let me tell you!
In any case, we had a few good chats about our experiences on the dating apps, although it seemed that Mr Game Master might have actually been in a proper relationship for a good long while before it fell apart because he couldn’t quite reciprocate the level of affection his then-girlfriend had and had felt guilty that he wasn’t investing as much into the relationship.
Which, good for him to acknowledge, but does make it hard when both him and me don’t feel any deep sense of attachment on first glance. But maybe time will tell if it goes any further. More meet-ups, more chats, more getting to know each other and liking that company could possibly lead to something more.
For now, I think it might be best to consider us decent acquaintances or friends. At time of writing, we’ve set up a tenuous second date so, it’ll be interesting to see if it goes further. After all, how can one fall in love with someone they don’t know?
And in instances like these, absence does not make the heart grow fonder. Especially as we’re all technically strangers, hoping to find a connection. But relationships are something that need a strong foundation to build from. Right now, Mr Game Master isn’t so important in my life that I’d miss out on the release of Final Fantasy XVI. And while that is no fault of his own, it takes time to build a tight bond. At least for me. And it’s not like I can have someone’s entire life story dumped into my lap, which I can read.
So, here’s to a few more opportunities with Mr Game Master to see where it goes. Unless, of course, it all fizzles out in no time flat and nothing happens. Which, of course, is what has continued to happen throughout my, admittedly, not-spicy romance life.
Or maybe I’ll win the lotto and be so satisfied with my life that I’ll no longer feel the need for companionship. I mean, I’m not opposed to the idea...so you know what? Here’s putting out the wish that I want to win the Powerball lottery and be set for life that I can retire and maybe self-publish a trash fantasy novel.

Ranking The Japanese Accents In Nancy Drew: Shadow At The Water's Edge
because this is the content you all followed me for. I just need to rant.
disclaimer: I am a born and raised American who has never left the country, I've just been studying Japanese for two years so I know how it works on a base level and I've spent a reasonable amount of (read: too much) time listening to native Japanese speakers on YouTube, in anime, and my teacher in class. If anyone sees this and has corrections or criticisms, they are welcome.
Also, I'm not going to go after Her Interactive for intentional racism because it's not a super huge company and they tend to butcher accents indiscriminately (Scottish, Southern American... heck, there's an Aussie in this game who's like "this haunting bisniss wood nevah fly in Sydney!" and then storms out. anyway). And voice acting is hard. Accents are hard. I'd probably do a worse job myself (with one exception... we'll get to that). With that in mind, let's go.
1. Miwako (younger daughter, works at Ryokan Hiei)
Okay, we’re starting off strong. I can’t find any information on the actors for most of these characters, but her voice actress is the only one of the cast with a Japanese name and I wouldn’t be surprised if her accent is natural. All the characters speak English with the occasional Japanese word thrown in when necessary. Miwako does not have a very strong accent, so most of the things that make me think her accent is real are in the way she pronounces Japanese words and her general consistency of pronunciation in both (we’re gonna be talking about consistency a lot). She mostly pronounces Rs like you would in English, but when she says “ryokan”, for instance, she uses the Japanese R sound. Her pronunciation of that word also has the correct Japanese pitch accent.
2. Rentaro (Miwako’s boyfriend, handyman)
Don’t let the fact that he’s number two on the list fool you, there is a very big drop in quality between the first and second places here. This is a bad accent. Still, it could be worse. Japanese accents are as varied as the people who have them, and some of his lines sound like accents I’ve heard before? Still, he rolls his Rs sometimes and occasionally strays into weirdly Scottish-sounding territory. It also comes off a bit stereotypical at times and he can’t pronounce Japanese words. Points for him: he opts to skip Rs when they happen in the middle or end of a word, like a British accent (cah instead of car), he’s mostly consistent with whatever the heck it is he’s doing, and he may have actually listened to people speaking English with Japanese accents.
3. Takae (Yumi and Miwako’s grandmother, works at the ryokan)
Here’s where I start to get mad. I *think* this character is supposed to be less comfortable speaking English, but all this means is that She. Talks. Extremely. Slowly. And. Pauses. Between. Every. Word. Also. She. Addas. In. Retters. That. Are. Not. Supposed. To. Be. There. and does that stupid stereotypical “flied lice” thing where she mixes up Ls and Rs. I will rant more about this later. This is a very dialogue heavy game. It is positively excruciating to sit through her horrible, terrible accent at .5 speed. Later games have an option to skip through dialogue, but this one does not.
Now, stereotypical as the L and R thing and the adding in letters thing are, they are things people really do. A couple weeks ago my teacher told me directly that some Japanese people eat flied lice, but not him. (which is mostly true, but the day before, he’d said a verb was in the pleasant tense. this is reasonable and understandable. however, I will privately be referring to keigo as “the pleasant tense” from this day forward- a little language pun for you all. sorry, I’m getting sidetracked.) The reason why is super interesting, but I don’t want to get into it here. It’s pretty easy to find good YouTube videos on the topic. What is important is that it’s a lot more common to replace Rs with either Ls or Japanese Rs (which sound more like Ls) than it is to do it the other way around. Takae loves adding in that hard American R in places it doesn’t belong.
Also, yes, people with stronger Japanese accents will sometimes add vowel sounds. This is because in Japanese, almost every sound is either a vowel or a consonant-vowel pair. You can’t just do it willy-nilly, though, there are rules for which vowel sound goes where and when, and some sounds like “n” or “s” would almost certainly not be followed by a vowel sound. It also happens more at the end of the words than in the middle, and again, Takae tends to add the wrong vowels in the middle of words.
Bad out of 10. I don’t actually know how I feel about this character because her dialogue makes me suffer too much. If Rentaro sounds like he’s possibly basing this off of listening to someone with an actual accent, Takae sounds like someone who knew nothing tried to spell out an accent in a book and she’s just reading it.
4. Yumi (Miwako’s sister, a free spirit. works at a bento stand in a convention center I guess.)
Awful as Takae is, I think Yumi annoys me more. She also mixes up the Ls and Rs badly and wrongly. I think that’s pretty much my only nitpick (it’s been a second since I played the game). So why is it so much worse than when Takae does it??
Because. BECAUSE. Around 95% of the time, I wish I was exaggerating, she has a straight up plain old vanilla news reporter American English accent. So much so that I legitimately kept forgetting she was supposed to have a Japanese accent at all. And then, out of the blue, she’ll just toss in an “Oh yes! A bento is a RUNCHBOX” out of nowhere and it makes me want to cringe out of my skin.
The worst part is they didn’t even have to give her an accent anyway. First, her sister hardly has one, and everyone in her family already has a fluent level of English proficiency. Second, they have a perfect in-story way out of this. The girl’s mother spoke some English, and she had friends in the United States and would take her daughters to visit every once in a while. This is canon. It’s also canon that Yumi is the most outgoing and non-traditional member of the family, that’s a big part of the plot! Just say she’s kept up her mom’s connections, spent some time in the U.S., and lost the accent! If your actress cannot and will not do the stinking accent without sounding racist and bad, take your easy in-story route and just don’t give the darn character an accent! I promise we will not forget that a Japanese character with a Japanese name whose family runs a Japanese bath house in Japan is Japanese if she doesn’t sound like a bad caricature.
Agh.
Anyway, thank you for reading this, and again, any feedback is welcome.

Diamond is Unbreakable OC
You can now interact with my new baby! Also I’m gonna tag @mistaeq here cause they might be interest in her- I took the concept of ballet dancing and sort of changed it up, because I didn’t want her Stand be a straight up copy of Adonis’s oop
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Ava Isogawa Age: 22 Date of birth: 13th March Zodiac sign: Pisces Ancestry: descendant of Japanese immigrants in Australia Sexuality: bisexual Pronouns: she/her Personality: empathetic, usually somewhat quiet and relaxed, her rage is silent, dreamy, creative, distrusting, maladaptive daydreamer, observant Likes: the colors blue and black, sword fighting, fantasy books, bubble tea, Josuke, Jotaro, stargazing, more to be added Dislikes: loud crowded places, ballet, being underestimated, inconsiderate people (aka Rohan) Height: 163 cm Weight: 68 kg Appearance: athletic, very fair skin, light blue eyes, always wears blue lipstick, white shoulder-length hair with black ends in the back (usually worn in a low bun), hand bracelet with a sword pendant, due to old cuts on her fingers she wears bandaids over them Stand name: Kashmir (reference: Led Zeppelin) - tall, muscular woman with a long skirt, bandages around her chest, gloves and a valkyrie-like helmet, long flowing hair that turns into shadowy smoke and dissipates at the ends Stand power: great speed and agility, dances with a one-handed sword, can blind a person for a certain amount of time by swiping a hand in front of their eyes Background:
Ava is the firstborn child of the rich Isogawa family in Sydney, Australia. Ever since she could remember, her parents had very high expectations of her. She was homeschooled, had a generally very strict upbringing and despite her very creative and dreamy nature, she was expected to become the heir of the business. She struggled with focusing on subjects like maths and economy, constantly being punished for zoning out or daydreaming, when such things were to be expected from a child.
Hoping to somehow sate her creative needs, when she was 6 years old, her parents signed her up for ballet classes. Ava hated every second of it, not only because it was incredibly boring to her, but also because she was forced to have a very strict diet, causing her to become dangerously thin. She was constantly tired, which made it even harder for her to concentrate on studying.
At the age of 12, however, she found a new passion: books, more specifically of the fantasy genre. Tolkien quickly became her favorite author, and as she got more and more consumed by the fantasy world, she grew enamored by the image of a strong, powerful warrior woman. Often she would stand in front of her mirror, studying her frail features. This wasn’t who she wanted to be. Becoming a businesswoman was not her calling, and she would rather die than get stuck in an office staring at a computer five days a week.
As her other 2 siblings were born, she could feel her parents’ attention on her slipping. She began to have more freedom, more space to get away with things. She used that to her advantage and started skipping ballet classes. With the help of her closest friend, her maid, she instead started going to the gym, took up martial arts and gained some weight. She also got a secret job, and finally by the age of 22 she had enough money to escape her family.
She moved to a small, friendly town named Morioh Cho in Japan. Thanks to half of her family speaking Japanese, there was no language barrier, and she could fit right in. The small town was perfect for her - somewhat quiet, or at least on the surface. One day while she was people watching at a park, gathering some material for her possible future book, she was shot with an arrow. Yet to her surprise, she didn’t die. Quite the opposite, something within her awoke and she soon stood face to face with a strange being, her Stand. A blonde man named Nijimura Keicho and his younger brother Okuyasu approached her and tried to persuade her into using her Stand on their sick father, but she refused to and even won a fight with them, quickly learning how to use her new powers.
She soon got to meet Kishibe Rohan, another creative soul like hers, though he was very different and very unbearable. He used Heaven’s Door on her and she took away his sight in return, making him swear not to do that again. Their relationship is somewhat neutral now, though she doesn’t really hang out with him unless she has to. Thanks to Rohan she met Josuke and Jotaro, who were much more likeable, and she even grew some sort of admiration for Jotaro.
Currently she works at a bakery.

the many lies of kanzaki hitomi to her long-suffering best friend uchida yukari
summary: when hitomi is on time to their weekend coffee time, yukari knows something is up.
notes: because I utterly adore escaflowne in ways that I don’t know if I can truly describe, and the wonderful @wuzzyletoastermac recently finished the show, I couldn’t not attempt a post-series write-up about...the best friend who’s only in four episodes. (I just love van and hitomi so much). G, hitomi and yukari friendship, van/hitomi mention. 1450 words.
---
Yukari knows it’s something big when Hitomi makes time to meet for coffee on a Saturday. Normally, Hitomi—best friend since forever, national track star at the age of 18, certified social worker, truly wonderful person, etc. etc.—is off with her long-distance boyfriend, or coaching track, or coaching track with her long-distance boyfriend looking pleasantly befuddled at the whole proceedings. On a rare occasion, she’ll ask Yukari for help getting Van into what can politely be termed “normal people clothes,” and Yukari can spend most of the afternoon puzzling over Van’s absolutely bizarre accent and failing to get either of them to tell her where exactly in Greece she can find someone as hot as Van Fanel.
Hitomi swears up and down that they started dating while she was doing a study abroad in Australia her second year of uni, but that doesn’t explain why the poor man 1: doesn’t speak English at least on par with an average high schooler’s cram school classes, and 2: doesn’t own a single pair of jeans not currently in residence in Hitomi’s closet. The Greeks aren’t that weird. Besides, half of Yukari’s architecture clients are based in America. She knows weird. And even by those standards, Van is weird.
Not to mention there’s some nagging part of Yukari’s brain that seems to recognize Van. It’s bothered her since they first met, and the last three years have done nothing to assuage that feeling. How silly to believe that they met in a dream or a vision. That is certainly more Hitomi’s realm.
But he loves Hitomi. It’s impossible to unsee that deep unending well of affection in his dark eyes, the soft smile that makes him look ages younger whenever she’s around, how patient he is even when she’s determined to find the perfect sweater for a job interview or the exact right cafe she claims was there the last time she was in this part of Asakusa. Occasionally, he’ll even catch her before she wanders too far afield, hand tight on her wrist in a way that speaks both to his own nerves wandering around in a crowded city (again, Hitomi went to uni in Sydney, why is Tokyo that much different) and to the way Hitomi turns back to him like a flower blooming in sunshine, all blushing cheeks and bright smile and alive in ways Yukari only wishes she could feel.
So Yukari’s a little jealous. It’s hard not to be. If it weren’t for the occasional argument blowing Hitomi’s temper sky high and Van’s own anger coming out in blistering tension, or the way that Hitomi will sometimes spend more time complaining about the weekend she’d had with him than bothering to answer any of Yukari’s questions about where exactly they’d met up, she’d worry that Van actually was perfect.
Okay well, no one she has to force into jeans against their will is perfect. Especially someone who looks like that.
So Yukari has kindly deigned to meet with her best friend at their favorite cafe on a beautiful Saturday morning, despite everything (Hitomi’s boyfriend and Yukari’s desire to sleep until 3pm respectively). Something’s off.
And when she rounds the corner at 10am on the dot, Kanzaki Hitomi is already there sipping a latte with Yukari’s favorite sitting there, still steaming. Hitomi is never on time. For anything. Ever. If she is, it’s because of her long legs and bizarre luck.
Something is definitely off.
“Yukari! I got you coffee,” she says, bright guileless grin on her face.
Yukari sits and sips. Sweet, caffeinated bliss. She almost forgives Hitomi the hour.
Not enough to loosen her suspicions, though. “Hitomi, what are you up to?” she says once her brain is active.
“Ah, well.” Hitomi casually brushes non-existent lint off her jacket sleeves. “I wanted to tell you something.”
“Is it about Van?” When her best friend’s face turns a bright pink, Yukari’s eyebrows rise. “Is he moving here?”
Head shake no. Hm.
“Did he finally take his jeans home?”
Deeper flush.
“Are you pregnant?”
“Yukari!” Hitomi screeches, face luminescent and voice far too loud for the little cafe. A few of the other patrons, including some who clearly have had as much sleep as Yukari, turn and glare at them, and Hitomi clasps hands over her own face. Yukari tries to not laugh, really. “I’m—no. And if you’re gonna be a jerk, I won’t invite you to my wedding.”
Any and all feelings of malicious annoyance vanish in an instant. “You’re—Hitomi! Congrats! That’s amazing, when are you getting married? Where are you getting married? If Van’s not moving here, does that mean you’re—where is he these days, is it going to be big or small? What should my dress look like? Do you have the colors picked out?”
Hitomi giggles through her fingers, a little on edge and clearly overwhelmed. “That’s too many questions!”
“I can write them out in a list and email them if you’d rather.”
A high-pitched whine more like a tea kettle than a woman in her mid-20s erupts out of Hitomi, and she drops her face to the table in her best impression of a puddle of melted ice cream. “I wanted to tell you properly, you know,” she mutters.
“You wouldn’t be you if you didn’t let it slip on accident,” Yukari says. As much fun as it is to mercilessly toy with her best friend who completely deserves it, there are more pressing matters, particularly Yukari’s own calendar that she is going to completely shuffle around. “But before I spend the next three hours getting you to spill every detail, at least tell me when and where.”
Without moving her face off the table, Hitomi rustles in her purse, pushing a pair of envelopes at Yukari. The first is a classic wedding invitation, cream colored envelope brushed with elegant black kanji. It’s exactly what Yukari would have expected from Hitomi’s mom, who has handled the years after her husband’s death with astonishing grace. But the second…
The parchment—it’s too thick to be paper, fibrous and off-white and flecked with gold—is about as wide as Yukari’s hands spread apart, and covered in a mix of runes and curling symbols that spread across the top of the invitation like wings. In the center of the whole thing is burnt a diamond-shaped emblem with a winged dragon. It doesn’t look like any Greek Yukari has ever seen.
“Would you be the host for my reception? It’s in a month and a half,” Hitomi is asking, which under any other circumstance would send Yukari into delighted peals of laughter. She’s a planner by nature, and organizing something as momentous as Hitomi’s small wedding will be worth every moment of her best friend and her boyfriend making sappy eyes at each other.
“Of course I will,” Yukari says, distracted. Social work doesn’t pay enough for an invitation this fancy, and Van can’t even afford his own clothes. And it’s not in Japanese, or English, and is that real gold? “What is this?”
Hitomi rubs nervous circles around her latte mug. “Since Van’s not from here, and the only person who can travel is his sister, we thought, you know. One wedding here for me, one there for him.”
“Sounds great,” Yukari says, turning the parchment upside down and over onto its back, hoping that the meaning will magically appear. “Hitomi, I can’t read this.”
“Oh, right. Sorry, Yukari.” Hitomi passes a hand over the parchment, the ring on her hand glimmering bright pink in the sun, and the runes curl and shift before Yukari’s eyes like…like magic. Yukari resists the urge to rub her eyes. Magic isn’t real. Just like dragons aren’t, or friends vanishing into pillars of light.
Your presence is requested at The marriage of Van of Fanelia and Hitomi Kanzaki White, 12th Moon Present invitation upon arrival
“It’s almost like a destination wedding!” Hitomi says. “Will you come? Please? Only Mom and my brother can come, and you know Sota hates this sort of thing.”
The things Yukari does for Hitomi. “Of course I will,” she says. But before Hitomi can relax too much, she reaches across the table and grabs her best friend’s hands, digging in just a little too hard. “But Hitomi, for once, don’t lie to me about this: where on earth is Van even from?”
Hitomi gives a little hiccup of a laugh and refuses to meet Yukari’s eyes. “So, funny story…”
——
“You owe me so much cake, Kanzaki Hitomi.”
“I promise, at least one at the wedding!”
“Each wedding.”

You’re terrible Muriel...
Muriel’s Wedding (dir. P.J. Hogan, 1994), came as part of a new-wave of Australian films that reached international success during the 1990s, along with the likes of Strictly Ballroom (dir Baz Luhrmann, 1992) and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (dir. Stephan Elliott, 1994). But what makes this particular film so special? All these films contain kitschy elements and are almost bizarre tonally, with larger than life characters, theatrical performances, and dance numbers, but part of what makes Muriel’s Wedding so addictive is its relatable central character.
Tumblr media
To summarise, Muriel Heslop is an awkward, insecure young woman with an antagonistic father, a down-beaten, depressed mother, and two siblings who sit around the house lazy and unmotivated. Her ‘so-called’ friends, cliched popular girls, bitchy and materialistic, enjoy putting Muriel down any chance they get. They inform her she is not invited to their group holiday and is out of their ‘gang’ because “she brings them down and embarrasses them”. Undeterred, she sneakily follows them to the resort they are holidaying at, where she bumps into her old schoolmate, Rhonda Epinstalk. When Muriel’s former friends discover and demean her, Rhonda rushes to her defence humiliating the girls by calling them out on their behaviour, thus cementing a strong friendship between the two. Muriel then moves out of her home in Porpoise Spit, to Sydney with Rhonda where she changes her name to Mariel and starts to gain some self-confidence. Despite this, her constant desperation for marriage puts a wedge between the girls’s relationship, with Muriel agreeing to marry young, handsome, South African Olympic hopeful, David Van Arkle, who is looking for a green card in exchange for money. Ultimately Muriel chooses what is right, and the two girls reunite and return to Sydney together, Muriel now more secure in herself than ever.
Tumblr media
On paper, Muriel is a pretty unlikeable character. She is a compulsive liar, she steals clothes, she does not try and get a job even though her father continuously sets up interviews for her, and she under appreciates her mother who is overlooked by everyone in the family, particular her husband who is having an affair. These negative characteristics should be enough to turn you off her, and for some film characters it would be. But these ugly parts of her personality, and her constant self-loathing, are very relatable and recognisable traits for many viewers. To put it simply, Muriel is a loser, and I think most people have felt like that at some point. All of her friends are moving on with their lives, getting married, finding successful jobs, but she is stuck at home, a constant disappointment to her parents, made only worse by the cruel jibes from her father. This builds up her insecurity and makes her resent herself even more, fuelling the cycle to continue on and on. It is a very raw topic, something that many people do not like to talk to their friends about, perhaps not even admit to themselves. But for me, the feeling of not being enough, and subsequently feeling guilty about not being enough has never been depicted more honestly on film.
Tumblr media
On another note, I never tire of the stream of larger than life characters we are introduced to. Personally, I find many of them to be very indicative of this era, the ‘laddish’ 90s, with its blowback to 2nd wave feminism creating a new place for men. It’s hard to speak from an Australian perspective, but here in Britain a new culture was arising, lads’ mags such as ‘Maxim’ and ‘Loaded’ were hitting the shelves, a new genre of pop music aptly labelled ‘Britpop’ was taking over the radio, skyrocketing bands such as Blur and Oasis to fame, laddish sitcoms such as Men Behaving Badly and Game On, which involved lots of ogling at pretty ladies, were emerging on our TV screens. I see many of these traits personified in the male characters of Muriel’s wedding, in particular Chook and his cronies. Chook is the husband of Tania, the leader of Muriel’s former friendship group, and the leader of her antagonisers, he resembles the stereotypical Australian surfer dude, with tanned skin and bleached blonde hair, Tania’s counterpart in every way. The first scene of the film takes place at the couple’s wedding, as Muriel successfully fights to catch the bouquet, Chook sarcastically jeers “sorry love I’m already taken” with his friends crowding around him laughing. We later see him exchange a flirtatious glance with Rose (another from the mean girl pack) and they sneak away to have sex in the middle of his wedding reception. These two instances already indicate to us the type of man he is, despite being his only appearance in the film. Tania does reference him in a later scene though, “they've accused him of raping a Japanese tourist, which is ridiculous! Chook hates the Japanese!”, effectively outing him as a racist, adulterer and sexual offender, displaying how his playful macho bravado does actually have sinister undertones. Characters like Chook, Tania and their friends almost seem like caricatures of 90s laddish culture, I wonder if they were included as a form of backlash to this emerging scene, and to highlight how poisonous it could be. Considering the levels of toxicity Muriel was surrounded by, ranging from grotesque men to nasty friends who constantly belittle her, it comes as no surprise that she fantasized about an alternative dream life and for a knight in shining armour to rescue her. Her knight in shining armour of course turned out to be Rhonda, but she did not conform to Muriel’s idea of an idyllic life, she taught her to stop caring about those who did not did not matter, and to start caring more about herself. A common and perhaps cliché idea used in films, but a very important one nevertheless.
Tumblr media
So... to sum up this brief digest, if you love films about true friendship, self-love, ABBA, Australian wit, larger than life characters and a hapless protagonist then this is the film for you, and even if not I would still give it a go, I am sure you will feel slightly better after watching it.

Ranking Little Women.
“This is a film not about a single woman’s quest for identity or independence, but about the infinite power of a woman’s community.”
Letterboxd is humming with Little Women Cinematic Universe energy, particularly since the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s new version, with its cast pulled straight from the Letterboxd Year in Review, dropped.
“I have a guttural five star type of feeling after the trailer,” writes Leia. “Bi culture is thirst-watching this for Timothée Chalamet and Florence Pugh,” Raph enthuses.
Yeah, we see you watching and re-watching all the previous film adaptations of Louisa May Alcott’s landmark 1868 novel that you can fix your eyeballs on. We’re not ones to doze by the fire; we like adventures. So let us take you on a romp through past Little Women screen adaptations, in which we rank the productions based on our community’s stantastic response to each.
Tumblr media
From left: Milton, Daisy & Ruby.
Little Women (1917) Directed by Alexander Butler
Though the March family lived in the town of Concord, Massachusetts, it was the British who got to the beloved American book first, with this silent film adaptation.
Starring Ruby Miller as Jo March and musical-comedy star Daisy Burrell as Amy March, the film is considered lost, so nobody on Letterboxd will ever be able to confirm how the prolific English actor Milton Rosmer stacked up as rich-boy-next-door Theodore ‘Laurie’ Laurence.
Letterboxd ranking: #7.
Tumblr media
Conrad Nagel & Dorothy Bernard.
Little Women (1918) Directed by Harley Knoles, screenplay by Anne Maxwell
Also considered lost is the first American adaptation, by the brilliantly named Harley Knoles, a British director who spent the 1910s working in the US. Matinee idol Conrad Nagel played Laurie.
Letterboxd ranking: #4. Jo March was played by silent film queen Dorothy Bernard, whose father hailed from New Zealand (as does Letterboxd), therefore this version ranks highly even though there are no Letterboxd ratings or reviews to confirm this fact. Instead, check out D.W. Griffiths’ dark, march-across-the-desert film The Female of the Species, in which “only Dorothy Bernard gives a believable performance” according to Michael.
(An aside: Here’s a list of unseen silent films that actually do exist, but that nobody on Letterboxd has yet seen, apparently.)
Tumblr media
From left: George Cukor directs Katharine Hepburn, Joan Bennett, Frances Dee and Jean Parker in ‘Little Women’ (1933). / Photo courtesy MGM
Little Women (1933) Directed by George Cukor, screenplay by Sarah Y. Mason and Victor Heerman
Now we’re getting to the meat & potatoes of Little Women standom. Not that it’s a competition, but Katherine Hepburn is the one Saoirse Ronan needs to beat. Hepburn set the screen standard for gutsy portrayals of Jo March, and appropriately so in this first version with sound because let’s be honest, when the world got to hear Jo March speak those lines aloud for the first time, Hepburn’s voice was the perfect choice.
The prolific Cukor was nominated for the best directing Oscar (he eventually won one in 1964 for My Fair Lady), but it was the screenwriters, married couple Mason and Heerman, who won the Academy Award for their script. (Hepburn also won that year, but not for playing Jo March.)
Letterboxd ranking: #3. “A true gem of depression-era cinema,” writes Taj. “Every single scene in the first half of this film is a pure delight.”
“I’d like to personally thank Katharine Hepburn for being absolutely perfect,” writes Skylar. Morgan concurs: “Hepburn plays Jo with a rough physicality, bold confidence, and a gentle sensibility, standing out in a rather unremarkable movie.”
Tumblr media
June Allyson and Rossano Brazzi.
Little Women (1949) Directed by Mervyn LeRoy, screenplay by Sally Benson, Victor Heerman, Sarah Y. Mason, and Andrew Solt
Why re-write a script that’s already perfect? Mervyn LeRoy’s 1949 Technicolor update lifted most of the screenplay and music from Cukor’s version, throwing in an on-trend acting line-up of June Allyson (Jo), Janet Leigh (Meg), Elizabeth Taylor (Amy) and Margaret O’Brien (Beth).
Never mind who played Laurie in this version (okay, okay, it was hunky Rat-Packing socialite Peter Lawford); the real tea here is the American film debut of Bologna-born Italian great Rossano (The Italian Job) Brazzi, as Professor Bhaer.
Letterboxd ranking: #2. “This is the best Little Women, fight me,” DylanDog declares. “I’m so impressed by the fact that they rewrote/restructured/padded out the 1933 screenplay, assembled a nearly pitch-perfect cast, and made such a fantastic Technicolor remake,” Dino reasons. “We actually see way more of the novel’s subversive gender politics play out here, and Jo’s motivations are much more palpable.”
“Although I also really like the 1933 version, the Hepburn film lacks the warmth I do find in the 1949 adaptation,” Annewithe writes. “I feel that this version conveys the true spirit of the book and is as cozy and warm and loving, and it’s in colour!”
Tumblr media
Susan Dey and William Shatner.
Little Women (1978) Directed by David Lowell Rich, screenplay by Suzanne Clauser
Between 1949 and 1994, all we got was this seventies miniseries adaptation, which flies far under the radar of Letterboxd’s Little Women obsession with only two member reviews.
Susan Dey was a smart choice to play Jo March, given her Partridge Family profile at the time, while Meredith Baxter Birney, who played Meg, went onto huge sitcom fame as Michael J. Fox’s mom in Family Ties. The real curiosity factor here, writes LouReviews, is “the casting of one William Shatner as the Professor, and he’s rather good!”.
Letterboxd ranking: #6. “This story keeps moving me,” is all Sandra had to say, while LouReviews writes “not essential by any means, but if you like the novel, you'll want to see this”.
Tumblr media
Winona Ryder and Christian Bale.
Little Women (1994) Directed by Gillian Armstrong, screenplay by Robin Swicord
It only took 126 years from publication for a woman to get behind the camera of a Little Women film, despite Alcott’s masterpiece long being a prime example of (white privileged) female complexity in storytelling. (Although, it’s fair to note that women have been involved in the scriptwriting for every Little Women film adaptation that we know of.)
Released—as Gerwig’s 2019 update will be—at Christmas, Gillian Armstrong’s version was as star-studded as they come, with 90s it-girl Winona Ryder—fresh off Reality Bites—as Jo March, and Christian Bale as Laurie. Also: Kirsten Dunst, Samantha Mathis and Eric Stoltz, with Susan Sarandon as Marmee.
Letterboxd ranking: #1. Sydney writes: “It’s really tough dealing with the fact that this movie is probably never going to get the respect it deserves.” Well Sydney, we’re happy to make your day. This Little Women is currently the highest-rated on Letterboxd (except for Bale’s facial hair, which is not highly rated by anyone). Thomas Newman’s score is much beloved, and the film is, in Julia’s opinion, “the definitive adaptation!”.
On a recent re-watch, Lauren “was transported back in time to my childhood and for those two hours everything felt simple and safe.” Meanwhile Sally Jane Black, in a thoughtful piece, gets right to the heart of Little Women-love: “This is a film not about a single woman’s quest for identity or independence, but about the infinite power of a woman’s community.”
Tumblr media
Little Women (2017) Directed by Vanessa Caswill, screenplay by Heidi Thomas
Not strictly a film, but well worth a mention, this recent three-part BBC adaptation stars Thurman-Hawke offspring (and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood flower child) Maya Hawke as Jo March. Emily Watson plays the March matriarch, and—Gerwig connection alert!—Kathryn Newton (Lady Bird’s Darlene) is Amy March.
Letterboxd ranking: #5. Alicia is a fan: “Winona will always be my Jo, but Emily Watson absolutely kills it as Marmee! Just love her FACE!!!! Her pain is your pain; her joy is your joy. Oyyy!”
Bethchestnut was slowly convinced: “A very handsome and loving production, even if there were a lot of things that bothered me about it. Doesn’t help that I watch the 90s version every year. Still made me cry twice.”
Tumblr media
Little Women (2018) Directed by Clare Niederpruem, script by Clare Niederpruem and Kristi Shimek
Released to mark the novel’s 150th anniversary of publication, this version wins points for casting Lea Thompson (Howard the Duck, Back to the Future) as Marmee, but loses points for the weird contemporary update, in which the March sisters inexplicably lose the messy complexity of their far more adventurous 19th-century selves.
Letterboxd ranking: #8. “Who decided casting Ryan from High School Musical was a good idea?” asks Sue.
Tumblr media
Also worth seeking out: two different Japanese anime adaptations, the 1981 series Little Women’s Four Sisters (若草の四姉妹), and the 1987 series, Tales of Little Women (愛の若草物語), which aired on HBO in 1988 and is notable for writing in a black character. Not worth a mention: this 1970 TV adaptation.
Greta Gerwig’s ‘Little Women’ opens in cinemas this December.

Partners in Arms
(the latest in a small series I didn’t mean to start X’D)
The final mission changed everything. Mako could see that easily the moment she had walked out of the medical wing after finally recovering from the radiation and rapid decompression sickness. Raleigh was still in for those, while Chuck… well, she still was astounded with how he had survived… not so shocked with how rough his condition was.
She could, however, only linger around the medical bay so much before feeling a need to do something. So she wandered. She didn’t have any idea of what exactly she intended to do… but wandering helped…
And before realizing it, she was standing in one of the Jaeger Bays… a depressingly empty one…
After years of growing up surrounded by Jaeger, and sounds of technicians working… the silence and the absence felt unnatural…
Though the silence stopped with the pattering of feet, and the tapping of claws on the concrete. Turning slightly to look behind her, she looked in time to see Max reach her before nudging his large mass against her.
“Hello Max,” She said softly, kneeling down to pat the bulldog.
Max let out a small whine nuzzling his face into Mako’s hand, before trying to lick it.
“Don’t drool over Miss Mori.”
It was almost amusing how familiar that line was coming to be, especially when heard with that gruff Australian voice.
“Marshal,” Mako greeted, looking up at Herc.
It didn’t feel quite right to call Herc that… Sensei had always been Marshal to her… but if someone else was going to be – it would have been Herc. It was fitting for him to be Marshal, Sensei always did trust his judgement.
For that sentimental aspect in the title… The man was someone she had been around fairly often as a child, he looked out for her as much as he had for Chuck… so it was easier for it to be him to fill those shoes than a random stranger.
“There’s no need for that Mako,” The older man said softly, bending down to pat Max on the back lightly.
He looked tired, which considering there was a period of him believing he lost his son, then another period of time where Chuck’s condition was critical… it wasn’t surprising. It was probably because of how tired he looked that Waimarie had stopped lurking in the shadows as a Kwoon Master, to take some of the workload off Herc.
“Perhaps there is no need,” She replied gently as she stood up slowly, “But perhaps there is a small desire.”
Herc blinked at that, seemingly stunned for a moment before his shoulders slackened. Mako couldn’t quite figure out if that was a good thing or not… Before she even began to figure that out Herc had spoken up.
“How’re you feeling?”
It was Mako’s turn to blink, taking a moment to think before replying.
“Physically, I am getting better.”
“And other than physically?”
Mako didn’t have anything to use to reply to that. Herc though seemed to understand and simply nodded before speaking once more.
“Lemme show you something, Miss Mori.”
With a whistle to Max, the veteran pilot walked off. Momentarily caught in the confusion, Mako watched the two for a moment before swiftly catching up. The walk turned out to be not too long of one, though admittedly took several turns and corridors.
But then she found herself standing in front of another one of the bays. This one having a closed off section which Herc made a beeline for.
“Before you came to Hong Kong with Gispy, Miss Mori,” Herc began to explain, “Sydney sent a jaeger ahead by the Marshal’s request.”
Mako blinked, “Another one?”
Herc nodded, taking a moment to type into the keypad before turning to face her once more.
He didn’t say anything more though, he simply stood there as the door lifted to reveal what was inside. The dark-haired woman could almost feel the edge of excitement and anticipation she had lurking, though it gave way to shock when she saw the black legs of the Jaeger. Those digitigrade legs.
There were only three jaegers which had non-human-like legs.
Tacit Ronin had ones which were more like that of an unguligrade… Crimson Typhoon had ones that compared to a plantigrade.
Kraken Roun though… Kraken had ones of a digitigrade…
Hesitantly the Japanese woman slowly panned her head upwards, taking in more bits of the Jaeger -it’s black parts, with turquoise detailing… the silver of fresh parts still unfinished- until she reached its head and her stomach did a flip.
It was Kraken.
Sydney had tried to restore Kraken.
“The Kiwis were insistent that because they forked out the money for Kraken, that it had to be returned, even if it just went to Sydney.” Herc explained as he stepped in, “The UN tried to refuse, but… well after dealing with us Aussies it’s no surprise they can be just as stubborn.”
Mako silently nodded, managing to listen as she stared at the towering Jaeger, looking at all the chains which held up parts of it.
“Chuck… the moment Chuck heard Kraken was coming back and that people in Sydney wanted to repair it… insisted on working on it. Even if it was during his spare time.”
“Evan-San always said Chuck-Kun knew more about Kraken than he did…”
Herc chuckled, “With how Chuck tried to take point on it, it seems like he did.”
Mako smiled amused at that as she looked at Herc for a moment before glancing back at the Jaeger.
“That influx of technicians from Sydney…. They were not all Striker’s were they?”
“No… there was a bunch of Kraken’s lot that decided to make the trip.”
Mako could feel that smile grow a bit more, that was how she remembered the Sydney Shatterdome being. A mix of Australians and New Zealanders who went all out to take care of their ‘babies’ as some of the technicians and engineers described both the Jaegers and the pilots.
“What I’m trying to get at though is… while I don’t know how Chuck would react to someone taking over his project,” Herc explained cautiously after a moment, “If you ever need something to clear your mind for a bit… she’ll be here waiting.”
Once more Mako looked at Herc, smile shifting a little as she looked carefully at the man.
“Thank you.”
Herc nodded, seemingly unsure of how to reply to that – The Hansen’s and their uncertainty which came to human interaction was still a small bit amusing while being a small bit sad.
Though the Australian proved to be on to something. After a few days of toying with it, Mako decided to go on ahead, putting on a technicians outfit and leading what remained of Kraken’s tech crew into the bay once more.
Herc on his part had actually tracked down more of them, as well as put Striker’s lot on helping with it. Soon enough it had escalated to the remnants of the three other jaeger tech crews to appear to also work on it.
Thus when Chuck was up and moving to the point where he could push himself into the bay, he was dumbfounded for a moment at how different the Kraken he last saw was to the one he was staring at currently.
Mako though had a pleased smile, walking up.
“What do you think?”
“The blue’s the wrong shade.”
“You mean turquoise,” Mako replied, almost amused at that was what came into Chuck’s mind first.
After a moment longer of staring at Kraken, Chuck craned his head to look at Mako.
“It’s a bang-up job, Mako…”
Mako’s smile softened at that, “Thank you Chuck-Kun….You did give us a good starting point.”
Chuck blinked before scratching the back of his head, “…I… just didn’t think Evan would have wanted his girl to be a piece of scrap metal…”
“No. Evan-San would definitely not have wanted that.”
With a shared look, it seemed suddenly they were partners again. Just not in a comm-pod like their fourteen-year-old selves had thought once, but as partners in arms working in the jaeger bay, leading the restoration of Evan and Waimarie’s Jaeger together.
They still argued between each other with moments of “darn it Mori the location of its serial number is off” and “Hansen those parts are obsolete, you won’t find them ANYWHERE.” But they worked well together. While in a wheelchair, Chuck worked on the finer parts that needed assembly before being put in, and Mako working with other technicians on its hull.
The moment Chuck had finished his therapy and was up and walking again, he had scaled Kraken’s foot and secured bolts along with Mako. The sobering point had been when they reached the inside of the COMM-POD working on the harnesses, updating them as they went.
Looking up from the left hemisphere harness to look at Chuck working on the right, Mako spoke up.
“Do you think… Anderson-San will return to piloting?” She asked softly.
Chuck, on his part, had blinked as he looked away from the wiring he was doing to think for a moment.
“…Your guess is as good as mine…”
Perhaps it was… perhaps it wasn’t. Mako hoped that Waimarie would come back… but after drifting with Raleigh she understood completely how hard that was after losing your co-pilot…
A sigh made her break out of her thoughts in favour of looking back at Chuck. The young Australian was still kneeling but had completely put down his tools.
“…The way I see it… she misses this… she wants to come back. But she doesn’t think she should.”
Silently the dark-haired woman nodded.
“…But she has us… and  she has someone who’s been in that same boat,” Chuck continued, “Maybe with those she will.”
It was with that, Mako saw something she had not seen Chuck show for a while… or full on. He was hopeful, he had the small look which reminded her of a mix of their expressions when they talked about being pilots… with a hint of that look Evan had whenever he said the war wouldn’t last forever.
And that made her smile. Hopeful was a good look on Chuck, he seemed less of an agitated cat when he’s like that.
Quietly the two went on with the work until the end of the day, where they had set up a position on the hand of Kraken Roun with a tub of choc-mint ice-cream and a tub French-Vanilla. That would be how Herc and Raleigh found them, high above talking between each other and eating ice-cream straight from the tub.
Waimarie would find them soon thereafter, and with a small nostalgic smile she’d disappear for a little before returning with a strawberry tub, moving to settle alongside them.
It wasn’t the same as those times Evan would carry Mako on his back, and Chuck was be chattering away about the latest fight, but the two would take what they could get.

My dream jobs (by “dream jobs” I mean Japanese speaking travel agent jobs at Japanese travel agents in Australia, because apparently I have decided that’s what I want to do now, based on nothing really) are only going in Sydney and Melbourne and anywhere else that isn’t Perth. I found a cover letter on my laptop yesterday that I wrote for a Perth based Japanese travel agent back in 2013 that I never would’ve been hired for at that time, but it makes me sad that the job in question is like negative six years old now.
Also, let’s face it, I wouldn’t even be remotely hired for the jobs in the eastern states. BUT I STILL WANT THEM. My head is a mess right now.

Werewolf AU
Tumblr media
Welcome to manic-depression. I absolutely refuse to polish this.
Wereluke: Luke Hemmings the Lycanthrope Hunter
Sweat dripped off of Luke’s hands like condensation off a cold can of cherry pepsi. He was stalking his prey, the first since the tragic incident that shaped his life forever. Luke had been a werewolf hunter ever since his father imbued him with the “Blessing” of lycanthropy at the age of thirteen. His father was his first target. Luke hated him with a burning passion, his hate fueled by the trust he felt moments before being bitten on the arm by his dad. Luke thought his father could never harm him, the man said as much in empty promises before the full moons when the disease took full control over him. Even when Luke’s dad bashed and scratched at his door, snarling and shouting profanity at him with such a visceral bloodlust, Luke always felt safe knowing that once the night passed, everything would be alright. But here they were, his father digging his sharp canines into Luke’s flesh, hot and sticky blood oozing out of the wound and dripping onto the shag carpet his mother bought to really tie the room together. What was once a gorgeous white rug that looked like it had been shaved off an angel’s wings, was now stained with a father’s betrayal of his son. Luke could have killed him there, it would have been so easy, just pull the silver knife out of the nightstand and thrust it into the werewolf’s neck. Let his blood swirl together with his son’s on the beautiful shag rug. That isn’t what happened though, Luke needed to wait. His father needed to see his son with intent to kill in his heart before such an act would be even remotely satisfying. Years passed, Luke became a recluse in the forests outside his home town of Sydney, (I guess, there are forests there, right?) hunting small animals with his heightened animalistic senses.  Soon, Luke was able to target and kill prey twice his size, his skill in combat honed alongside his primal instincts. He was ready.
Finally the day had come. It was a new moon, the time when lycanthropy was at its weakest. Luke would be no different this night as he would had he never been infected with this disease. Hemmings walked the empty streets of a satellite town near Sydney, the sound of cicadas masking his already unnaturally light footsteps. He looked up at a neon sign on one of the buildings. “Gold, Shit and Silver Pawn”. This would do. Luke extended his hand into the glass, creating a spiderweb of crystalline shards on the window of the establishment. Once again, the man swung his hand into the window, shattering it completely and leaving an entrance to the building. Luke entered the jagged hole, shaking the blood off of his hand and beginning to pick pieces of glass out of the wound. Once the new moon passed, his rapid healing would set in and it would be like tonight never happened. Hemmings strolled through the aisles of the shop, his eyes straining in the darkness due to his weakened state. His quarry glistened against Hemmings’ torchlight. Before him lay a 15th century silver tachi blade. This blade was being sold as a collector’s piece for individuals with an interest in Japanese swordsmanship history. The true history of this blade lay parallel to Luke’s current path, the sword was used by an elite group of samurai werewolf hunters hired and trained for the emperor’s protection. Tonight, it would serve as a weapon of vengeance.
Sweat dripped off of Luke’s hands like condensation off a cold can of cherry pepsi. He was stalking his prey, the first since the tragic incident that shaped his life forever. He watched his father’s chest rise and fall in his slumber, the man he hated so much was so vulnerable, but that wasn’t how this was going to happen. Luke swung the blade quickly to his side, never taking his eyes off of the man who infected him with his curse. The sound of silver clashing against ceramic shattered out through the home as a vase smashed into dozens of jagged pieces. Luke’s father sprang awake and began frantically searching the room in the darkness. His eyes finally found Luke’s shape, barely a shadow in the dim candlelight permeating from the nightstand. The shadow grew closer and angrier, the blade reflecting both the candle’s light and Luke’s rage and hatred. Fear took the father’s eyes before the short and lethal sound of the tachi entering flesh and bone sang out. Luke stared silently into his father’s eyes as blood ran onto the bed. Small sprays of crimson spurted forth from the man’s mouth as he tried to speak. It was useless. The silver of the blade finished its job of burning away the lycanthropic curse that would have otherwise kept him alive while the nature of the sword burned away any chance of the father’s survival. As Luke’s father breathed his last, Luke had only one more target. Hemmings closed his eyes tightly as he turned the blade on himself.
