@baboland, @nqds told me u wanted to learn to crochet right?? Well here u go
before u start, ur gonna need yarn and a crochet hook, u can watch this vid to like know everything abt that before u do start
youtube
right so this playlist on yt has everything u need to know, obviously u don't need to do the small projects in between or at the end
Heres how to do a slip knot (the way u start ANY crochet project) in an easy way and not in an overly complicated way like how everyone else does
youtube
Just watch the first part of the video on how to do the slip knot
And here's a vid that shows how to do a magic ring using the chain 2 method, which trust me, will make ur life SO much easier
youtube
U will also need to learn the magic knot, which is how u join 2 different yarns together but u can do that later or js watch a tutorial on yt when it comes to that. (U can watch Bella Coco's vid on that)
All right so these r the basic things ull need to know for now, and only rlly need to know the 6 main stitches (chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet) and how to increase and decrease (there r 2 types: regular decreases and invisible decreases) to crochet like any project. Obviously some projects will need a complex stitch here or there but it's not anything that u can't watch a tutorial for.
U will also eventually need to learn to read patterns, as there are abbreviations for the stitches. Theres also smth known as crocheting in the front and back loops but that's nothing to worry about since it's not a stitch, but just a loop in where to place ur stitch in. l'll putapicture of the abbreviations, since they're also used in yt tutorials
Tumblr media
Some channels that I'd recommend for tutorials:
Club crochet (for amigurumi, which is the Japanese word for plushies)
Hooked by Robin (for amigurumi)
Mahumcrochets (for stuff like decor, bags, clothing and all, let's just say her channel and tutorials r a dream for a coquette girlie)
Bella coco
And thats all I have for now!

Crochet Bucket list
Yarn
Velvet Yarn - the stitches blend so well. Seems a very good choice if you prefer smaller product but still like blanket yarn’s look. But that also means it’s harder to see stitches. It probably suits faster and easier pattern.
Metallic Yarn (gold, silver, bronze) - Yellow simply can’t compete with gold when you wanna add sparkle onto Christmas projects. But why are they so hard to find in offline shops? None of the Michaels in my city has metallic yarn.
100% polyester yarn - I recently bought a skein and used in the clam project. (Link here, the white shell insides) it’s so fluffy and soft. The stitches blend better than acrylic or cotton. It also has the right amount of stretchiness.
Gradient Yarn - They are so so beautiful. Wouldn’t it be fun to make a rainbow roll poly? :D
Variegated Yarn - Planned Pooling looks like dark magic. But so, so much fun. When can I start?
Skill/Product
Tapestry Crochet - There are some classic painting patterns I’ve seen and they just look amazing. Besides, I really wanna crochet myself some gloves or scarves with more complex patterns.
Granny square - I can’t believe I still haven’t made any.
Reading chart - I recently got my hands on some Japanese and Mandarin ebook. The patterns inside are beautiful. But they are all written using charts. Need to learn that at some point.
(To be continued in the future)

November 2023 Reading Update!
I may have delayed this one a few days because I was finishing up my library book and about to pick up more...😹 There's a bit to cover this time, so here's another Read More for those brave enough to wade through a couple mini-reviews, the current lineup, many acquisitions (purchased, checked out, and even won), and a lone new release shoutout.
October Mini-Reviews
White Cat, Black Dog by Kelly Link - 5 stars
How could it not be 5 stars? I love Kelly Link's stories, and a whole three of these were rereads I'd already loved before. "The Lady and the Fox" was still a very charming tale, and I had a lot of fun with "The White Cat's Divorce."
Starter Villain by John Scalzi - 4 stars
Perhaps the objective rating would be 3.5 stars-ish, since I don't know that I would have been nearly as interested without the cats and dolphins. And the first half of the book is basically orientation. But by the end I'd had a lot of fun and it was silly and even cute at times. A fluffy read, not just because of the cats.
Current November Reads
Lone Women by Victor LaValle
Nearly finished, only reason I have not is because I had to prioritize library reads and I try to keep some momentum with Speaking Bones lmao. Continues to be A Lot and the wild twists and turns are increasing.
The Forest Brims Over by Maru Ayase (translated by Haydn Trowell)
After reading the synopsis on my library's app, I immediately placed a hold on this. A woman serves as the muse for her husband's novels, losing her own privacy and self, until she beings sprouting after eating a bowl of seeds. He sets her up in an aquaterrarium and intends to continue exploiting her, but she outgrows this container and consumes the city.
Speaking Bones by Ken Liu
Reached the 1/3rd mark of this thousand-page tome! Back in the pattern of personal stories, clever inventions, and tense battles.
Fresh Dirt from the Grave by Giovanna Rivero
Briefly had to return the ebook for others' holds, but I have it again via Libby. About 30% through. Not sure about some of the portrayals of Indigenous and Japanese characters in a couple stories, but I am of neither background, so your mileage may vary.
Acquisitions and Further Plans
I've ended up with a bunch of new books, though only one is directly purchased... 😅
The Crane Husband by Kelly Barnhill
Picked up this novella at the library, so it'll be the next read after The Forest Brims Over. It's a retelling of The Crane Wife, exploring domestic abuse. A woman marries a crane, which menaces her teen daughter and the younger son her daughter is essentially helping raise.
Feed Them Silence by Lee Mandelo
Another Tor novella from the library! A scientist studying the few remaining wild wolves uses tech to experience one's perceptions directly in her own mind. Her absorption in the task threatens her relationship with her wife as well as her own wellbeing, and those funding the work could doom the wolves in the end.
Our Shadows Have Claws: 15 Latin American Monster Stories ed. by Yamile Saied Méndez and Amparo Ortiz
Anthology of stories from Latin American YA authors that I won in a Goodreads giveaway! I've been lucky this year 😹
Let Us Descend Jesmyn Ward
My pick from Book of the Month's November selections. An enslaved girl endures the cruelties of slavers and plantation life, while taking comfort from the memories of her maternal ancestors and the spirits of the world around her.
An Upcoming Release
I've been a bit behind on looking at what's coming up at the end of the year, so here's the one thing I know of that intrigues me quite a bit:
Winter Harvest by Ioanna Papadopoulou (November 21st)
There are a lot of retellings lately of the Hades & Persephone myth, but this book is from the perspective of Demeter (and incorporates other myths surrounding her). After her own difficult life, the abduction of her daughter is a tipping point into Demeter's transformation into a chthonic goddess of both life and death.
And before I let you go, I want to again highlight the Indiginerds project from Iron Circus Comics, running on BackerKit for another 12 days! Help them get to the $35k stretch goal that unlocks donation copies for Indigenous libraries! A great way to observe Native American Heritage Month.
If you read all the way through, thank you so much! 😻

Book Review - Lonely Castle in the Mirror (🇯🇵 Japan)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image source: Marcus Winkler @ pexels)
YA World Reading Challenge book for:  🇯🇵 Japan
Lonely Castle in the Mirror
Author: Mizuki Tsujimura  ;  Translator: Philip Gabriel
Review
Kokoro is yet again staying home from school, no longer able to face her 1st year of junior high, when the mirror in her bedroom begins shining. What she finds through the mirror is a mysterious castle and a masked child called the Wolf Queen. There are six other teenagers, and they are given the opportunity to search for the key to a room that will grant one wish. The castle is open from 9 to 5, which leads Kokoro to deduce... none of the other kids are attending school either.
What you get is not a pulse-pounding adventure as you might first expect when we’re suddenly pulled through a magic mirror. But rather, we have the castle giving these seven loners a chance to discover themselves and each other. Whereas in some books what might ensue is a bitter fight to claim the One Wish, in Lonely Castle the kids find that more than a magical boon, the solace and escape of the castle itself might be what they need. Slowly, with fragile trust, their stories emerge.
Aaaahh! This was so good! It gives a slow, oh-so-gentle build-up to carefully ripping your heart out and sewing it nicely back together. Very sweetly, though.
This was such a satisfying mystery, also. Especially if you’ve studied up on your fairy tales (though not necessary to enjoy the book), you can pick up the clues and as each little layer is pulled away and be saying yes, yes! I knew it! or be stunned in awe at the pieces you didn’t notice. I think it struck the perfect balance between not too obvious and not too convoluted that it makes your brain hurt. I love the way that everything tied together in the end.
Each of the character’s voices are unique with clear personalities. At times there is a little translation-induced clunkiness (though since I know Japanese and can recognize the speech patterns I might just be hyper-aware of it.) I thought the use of honorifics (very important to the relationships) was handled clearly in the English edition. My only nitpick was that some of the slang seemed off at times. It looks like maybe this was published for a UK audience first which might explain some of it, but, for example, he’s a dish was presented as young people’s slang. Personally, I would think of that as very old-fashioned (1950s era or so) unless the kids have revived it in the last 10 years and I haven’t noticed. So a couple times things like that gave me a ‘huh?’ moment and drew me out of the flow.
Overall, this was an honest, sensitive portrayal of struggling junior high school kids mixed with a unique mystery.
It releases on August 16th 2022 from Erewhon Books!

A Dream of Summer Rain (Chapter 2: A Remedy for the Aftermath of My Habits)
Available for purchase in its entirety as an ebook here:
They sat in the cramped church basement as rain hammered the ground outside. Lacy shared a table with Danny, while Drew, their teacher, stood at a podium beneath a broken clock and a golden crucifix, reading from a well-worn Bible.
“Now class, who can tell me about the Tower of Babel?” Drew said. “Liam. Care to offer your take on this?”
Lacy jerked forward in her seat.
“If you’re trying to run down the clock again, Liam, we’ve still a half-hour left. Tell us: why did God strike the Tower down?”
“Uh, He did it-”
“You, Liam.”
“W-what?” Lacy said.
Drew leaned forward on his podium, smirking as darkness papered over the ceiling above. “It was your fault, Liam. You and your family. It’s always been you monsters.” His blue eyes morphed red, and his holy book caught fire. The fire spread to the podium, down onto the rug.
Lacy leapt from her chair, and looked and saw she was all alone. None of the others had stayed with her, except for Drew. Horns sprouted from Drew’s forehead as his teeth sharpened to fangs. The fire, orange and red and golden, consumed everything in sight. Outside, rain assaulted the ground, flooded the world, shattered the windows to the church basement and poured in. But instead of quenching the fire, it fed it. The water burned in the hellfire furnace, and Lacy found herself drowning in a Lake of Fire.
Above her hung a Star, shining blue, piercing through Hell, reaching for Lacy. Lacy reached up for it, but she closed her hand too slowly, and it slipped from her grasp and flew away. The fire grew and grew and grew all around her until a hand reached down from above. She clasped it, let it raise her up from damnation, and found that it belonged to… Herself. To another her. This one was all wrong though- carried herself like a man, dressed like a man in a three piece suit and tie, with eyes of an inverted pattern and pointed ears and a voice like a storm. No, not like a storm- it was a storm, wearing her face, a twisted force of destruction clad in her reflection and waiting to sweep her away. He kissed her cheek, and as she turned and ran he called, “be seeing you!”
She ran after him, ran until found a castle sculpted from a single sheet of pitch black metal standing beneath a moon quartered into the points of a diamond. Between the castle and the moons floated the remnants of a city that yearned to drift out into an endless sea of empty blackness and oblivion. Snow fell in a heavy torrent, and Lacy lumbered up to the front door with her greasy, hairy body and tore it off its hinges. She lumbered through its interior, and found it was a library: an endless maze of shelves that reached four hundred feet for the ceiling, each packed with tomes and volumes. Some were inked in English, and bore titles such as Necronomicon, Arcanum Unbound, and The Unabridged Histories of Magic. Others were in tongues she could recognize, or at least take a guess at-, Latin, Aramaic, Farsi, Igbo, Japanese, Russian. But others were in languages she had no idea of, of languages long forgotten to human memory, from the days of antiquity when the world itself was more… Malleable.
She climbed the spiral staircase up to the very top of the castle, where she found a single, slim volume waiting for her at the final step: The King of Elfland’s Daughter.
She’d seen this before.
She stepped on it, then moved on. She dragged herself onto the roof of the castle, and she stood beneath the floating city and the four moons. The snow melted on her skin, and she drank in the cold. Hideous laughter bubbled up inside her and burst forth as she reached her hand towards the sky. From the center gap between the moons, her star descended from the heavens. It lowered itself slowly into Lacy’s outstretched hand, and she guided it into her heart.
An agonizing blaze engulfed her insides. It consumed all that she was, and when it was done, all that was left was her hate and rage and resentment, and a world upon which to avenge herself. Behind her, the storm that wore her face laughed at her as she inched closer and closer to becoming him. He came forward, the thing she didn’t want to be, the man pretending to be her, the monster he wanted her to be, and they danced together and became one.
“I’ve been so looking forward to this,” the Storm said with her mouth, she said with the Storm’s voice. She turned her sights to the east, where the island ended and the Sea of Glass stretched over the abyss. She smiled, and she set forth, baying for blood and order, lowering her soul deeper into the Lake of Fire with each step.
***
Lacy woke up drenched in her own sweat. Again. She’d had the dream. Again. She went about her designated hour of self-loathing, again, and when it was over her stomach growled with such ferocity it forced her into the kitchen in search of food. A-fucking-gain.
The kitchen was the largest part of the house. The hallway at the back of the house, which contained the doors to their respective bedrooms and the bathroom, emptied into the mouth of the living room, where their black couch, brown chair, glass coffee table, and plasma screen television resided in a cramped consortium. To the left of that was the kitchen, a tightly-compacted area wherein a black stove, a microwave, an oven, a fridge, and a wooden, rectangular kitchen table all gathered. Danny sat at the table eating his breakfast of maple sausage and hash browns, the aroma of cooking still pouring off of the skillet on the stove. He was a slender young man with light brown hair and blue eyes, standing at– as he quite insistently phrased it–just below average height.
“My God,” Danny said. “She lives.”
Lacy grunted.
“Morning to you too, sunshine. Make any sales?”
Lacy nodded, then held up five fingers.
“Good work!” Danny smiled. “I’m gonna head out soon. Same as usual for you today?”
Lacy nodded again.
“Good to hear, good to hear.”
“Anything…,” Lacy said, “Anything happening with you?”
“No, not really. Talked to Corporate this morning after blowing her off last night.” His thick eyebrows knitted tightly, and his mouth locked into a sneer. ‘Corporate’ was what he called his mother. Granted, she was part of the corporate office for Woodrow Knives, and she was their immediate boss. Lacy had met the woman a few dozen times growing up. She was… A bit of a bitch, frankly. Danny avoided talking to her when he could.
“How’d that go?” Lacy asked.
“The usual.” Which meant it had devolved into a shouting match.
Lacy winced. She put her hand on her friend’s shoulder and said, “I’m sorry about that. I know how much she gets under your skin.”
His shoulders drooped, and he smiled sadly. “Thanks, Lace.”
She nodded. “Of course.”
She poured herself a small bowl of dry cereal and ate in silence, then said good-bye to her friend as he tied his tie and went off to work with his suitcases full of knives. Lacy sat there a while, listening to Danny’s truck as it drove further and further away. Finally, she got up and headed for her room, only for the spinning wheels and rumbling engine of an approaching car to catch her attention.
She opened the door as a police car pulled up in front of the bungalow. Two officers lumbered out. “Are you Liam O’Sullivan?” one of them asked.
Lacy nodded.
“We have some unfortunate news about your parents.”
Lacy had always expected to hear one day that her father had killed her Mom and then, like the miserable coward he was, capped himself. Even still, Lacy’s heart sank into the acidic pit of her stomach as the cops explained that her parents had been murdered. It sank further when they showed her the pictures of her parents’ bodies, and she realized what had happened.
They’d been killed in the exact same manner Drew had been. Chests dug open, hearts torn out. Someone… Something had desecrated their remains. Something with fangs and claws.
The inside of Lacy’s skull became a pressure cooker of dissociation and anguish. The cops left, and once they were out of eyeshot, she got up, went into the woods, and beat a tree with a shovel while screaming at the top of her lungs. She did this for several hours, until her muscles throbbed and her voice was hoarse and the stench of sweat was thick on her body hair. She fell to her knees, she listened to the wind snake between the trees as she stared up at the sky through the viridescent canopy, and she wept. The clouds were thick and gray, and she wanted the rain to come to wash away her sin and filth, wash away the whole world until there was nothing left that could hurt her ever again. She ached with rage and despair, and as always, her star waited for her in the sky above. It clawed for her, desperate to get in, desperate to corrupt her, desperate to turn her into something she wasn’t.
“And what are you, exactly?” Drew asked.
Lacy blinked. Her head turned behind her, then in front of her, then up and down and side to side as she searched in vain for the source of the voice. She fell onto her back and looked up. “I dunno, Drew,” she said. “I really don’t.”
She half-expected to hear Drew’s voice again, for him to respond with a simple but cutting utterance of the word ‘bullshit’, but this was not so. She was left in that moment with only her own heartbeat and her Star looming above her. She was left in that moment with the simple, irrefutable fact that her parents were dead, and the same monsters who had killed her teacher, who had been trying to kill her for over a decade, were responsible.

Diabetes – a disease that is gripping more and more people worldwide. Over 30% of the American population is either already diabetic or pre-diabetic. This number is slated to rise to 50% within the next ten years! There is no known cure, but the good news is that it is manageable. Research has shown that people have overcome diabetes by correct lifestyle changes and the right eating patterns. However, achieving that balance is not easy. Understanding the way our body reacts and responds to different types of foods and different meal timings is a detailed study in itself. Marketplaces are now full of diabetes control supplements and programs. It's quite a mind-boggling choice! Which one works and which one doesn't is a challenging question – and you will never know until you try! I tried the Diabetes Freedom program, and here I am, giving you my unbiased view of what this program is and does. Let’s find out! The Diabetes Freedom Program The Diabetes Freedom program is a two-month online program to control Type 2 Diabetes. It consists of fixed nutrition plans, rules to follow, and meal timings. It aims to help reduce and remove the symptoms of diabetes using natural methods only – a healthy mix of dietary plans and exercise. Following the program will help control sugar levels and insulin levels. Created by George Reilly, a 61-year old family man from Wisconsin, the Diabetes Freedom program is a result of years of research combined with Reilly’s own fight with Type 2 Diabetes. How Does It Work? The Diabetes Freedom program is purely digital, which means that you will be granted access to a member’s area after the purchase. It consists of the main program, which is in the form of video presentations. There are some bonuses also which are in the form of ebooks and manuals, which you can download. The main program is a three-step approach: Step 1: The Pancreas Restart Nutrition Plan – This is explained in 5 short videos accompanied by a nutrition plan. The initial aim is to break down the white fat cells, improve the function of your pancreas, and help your body regular blood sugar on its own. Step 2: The Metabolism-Boosting Blueprint – This is a 2-minute video showing you a fat burning exercise routine to follow which can easily be done at home without any special equipment. It also gives you three recipes for blood sugar-lowering power drinks. Step 3: Meal Timing Strategies to help reverse Type 2 Diabetes – A video guide explaining how to time your meals, the right time of the day to eat your carbs and desserts, and so on. Here is a list of bonuses that are included, which I especially found useful: Meal Preparation Guide – Lots of excellent tips and recipes included Stay Young Forever – It gives out secrets the Japanese use to look and feel young 33 Power Foods for Diabetics! Fat Burning Blueprint – It you are starting out with some extra pounds, its best to try this first! Pros The members' area is very well organized. You do not have to spend time looking for the right material. It's all arranged in order and by type. The videos are short and to the point. I am really not into long videos that have people rambling on and on – that just gets me yawning! Here the videos are all 2 minute to 5 minute ones, which really get straight to the point. There is no fluff to beat through. A time-saver for sure! There is a list of healthy recipes and detox teas included. These are all easy-to-make items, and having tried several, I can say that they taste delicious! The detoxifying teas were an eye-opener for me. I have switched to these teas completely and given up my coffee. This program helps aid weight loss. This is a direct benefit to diabetes. With a reduction in body weight, the blood sugar levels are positively impacted. A significant side effect of the program is the boost in your energy levels. Controlled blood sugar levels, better metabolism,
and overall, better body functions all result in you experiencing higher levels of energy. The feeling of lethargy and drowsiness all go away. There are no upsells in the member's area. This is a big plus for me. The initial payment is a one-time fee with no extras that you need to pay for later. There are also no recurring fees. From a buyer point of view, the sixty-day money back guarantee doubles as a testing period for the program. You can give it a try for two months, and if it does not start showing any results, you can simply ask for a refund. Cons The program is a digital one only. There are no physical CDs or books mailed to you. However, the member's access is a lifetime one, so you do have access to the online material at any time you want. As it is an online program, you would need an internet connection for any time access. If you do not have the internet, you cannot access the program. The program is available for purchase only from its official website. You cannot buy it off any other marketplace like Amazon. The program takes a little time to show results. To be fair, any natural remedial course takes time – there is no instant change in your body’s sugar levels. You will need to be a little patient. Final Verdict The Diabetes Freedom program seems to be an effective online diabetes control program. It is backed by research and experience. The program follows a natural approach that is obviously healthy and devoid of any side effects. Following a healthy diet plan and regulated exercise is a recommended lifestyle option for everybody today, not just those with diabetes. This program looks at correcting faulty lifestyle choices and thus ensures not only a healthier you but also, a healthier family (needless to say, if one person in the family starts adopting better eating habits, others will soon follow!). Priced affordably, the one-time payment is well worth it. If the other alternative is to keep spending money on and taking diabetes medicines throughout your life, this seems like the better choice! Just ensure that you stay committed to the program for its full two-month course, and you will definitely see the positive changes in your body.

Most platforms refuse poorly transformed eBooks, and Amazon Kindle wastes no time refusing any automated conversions. We course of eBook conversions in English, Arabic, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Chinese language among others. This is a simple course of that is completed online, and takes simply a couple of minutes. Now, take 15 minutes to jot down answers to those questions . This may increasingly take several days. A Promo Code is an alpha-numeric code that's attached to select promotions or commercials that you could be obtain as a result of you are a McGraw-Hill Professional buyer or e-mail alert subscriber. Books which fall below this class are governed by DRM (Digital Rights Administration).
DRM is Digital Rights Management. If this is the first time buying an eBook then you will need to install the suitable reader first. The books are in the EPUB format and can work with the PRS-505 or the PRS-seven hundred within the US only for now -- different countries have completely different copyright terms, so we would imagine the attorneys are busy sorting all of it out. EPUB Open Container Format (OCF), which defines a file format and processing model for encapsulating a set of related assets right into a single-file (ZIP) EPUB Container. The implementation of the program was a collaborative effort with the campus libraries, The middle for Educating and Learning with Expertise, and The Office of knowledge Sources Technology. Generally gross sales info is included. Meanwhile, in-app advertising sales accounted for $forty five billion, and of that, 44 percent was derived from games. We needed to convey excessive value to our readers, but at the same time turn these articles into some form of lead generation system. In 2014 and 2015, we had been spending quite a lot of time on our blogs writing long-type content material. Maybe you could have thought of writing an e-book?

back-to-school tools
Tumblr media
‘tis the season again, so here are some handy websites and browser extensions i’ve discovered over the past few years that’ll hopefully make this year a bit easier for you. i’m taking high-school-level classes, but a lot of these should help with college/uni work, too!
feel free to reblog and add your own recommendations :)
the only ones you have to install and/or sign up for have an asterisk, but note that they’re all free either way.
L A N G U A G E   A R T S
planet ebook
this is my go-to for digital (and legal!) classic literature. i download the pdf files and upload them to places like one note to annotate, but epub and mobi versions are also available if you prefer those. no need to break your back over hauling textbooks and your required readings!
audible stories
this doesn’t have the widest selection of audio books, but it definitely has its uses! there are a lot of classics on there, which could come in handy for a literature or english class.
easybib
this is the best citation tool ever. i love that i can choose which style i want to use and what kind of media i’m researching with (books, journals, websites, etc.). if i need to, i can go in and edit any (citation) category i want, but that isn’t usually necessary because it can find stats that even i can’t while looking at the source. enter some info, copy ‘n paste the works cited list to your paper, and you’re done!
i recommend the web version and not the google docs add-on because the add-on doesn’t let you customize your citations
gradeproof* or grammarly*
these are both grammar/spelling checkers that provide plenty of stats, which are most useful for speeches. you can use these to see your character count, word count, number of sentences, syllables per word, words per sentence, readability, grade level, reading time, speaking time, etc.
wordcounter
this is a great alternative if you can’t/don’t want to install gradeproof or grammarly.
powerthesaurus
this is my go-to thesaurus... it has a ton of features if you go on the website (it’s not just for synonyms, though those are seemingly endless!). plus, if i don’t want to open a new tab, i can use the extension in my toolbar to see a brief list!
just a word of caution: look up any words you don’t know (because if you go far enough down the list, they’re not completely relevant anymore).
onelook
i use this reverse dictionary to find the word that’s on the tip of my tongue but i just can’t name (though it has a lot more features than that!).
cueprompter
this is the perfect teleprompter for any speeches you need to record (maybe for an online graduation? a virtual debate?).
xodo*
this is a great digital annotation tool (right in your browser) for those of you who don’t have an app like goodnotes on your ipad. you can upload files from your google drive, your device, or dropbox and draw on them, type notes, add comments, highlight, choose different underline patterns, add shapes/arrows, etc. all while customizing opacity, thickness, and colors. you’re also able to zoom in/out, change page width, rotate the page, change your layout (pdf, book, magazine), and choose a transition style.
A R T
canva*
i love this site to death---if you haven’t heard of it yet, what are you doing?? i can design everything from a resume to a powerpoint to a school dance flyer on this thing! there are beautiful templates to choose from, but if that’s not your thing (it isn’t mine either), then there are millions of photos, doodles, graphics, fonts, borders, backgrounds, etc. to choose from. plus, you can even upload your own content. (i designed the header for this post on there!)
F O R E I G N   L A N G U A G E S
typeit
i hate having to remember all the keyboard shortcuts for special characters, so i just copy and paste from this international keyboard. choose a language, and you’re good to go. :)
audible stories
did i put this in two different categories? yes. audible stories has free audio books in english, spanish, french, german, portuguese, italian, dutch, and japanese! i recommend finding a children’s audiobook on there in your target language and pulling up an ebook online so you can improve your listening and comprehension skills. there’s no need to download any content, and it still saves your spot (even once you close the tab), which is a lifesaver!
duolingo*
i think we all know by now that this site is good for practicing your sentence-writing skills and gaining a little extra vocab. keep in mind that this only helps if you take notes on your mistakes and type answers out yourself as opposed to mindlessly clicking through multiple choice questions! duolingo stories are also great for working on your listening comprehension skills and some immersion.
linguno*
i use this site for conjugations because that’s its main asset, but there are other things you can look into if you like. i love that i can choose a section and a level (ex: a1 level one, a1 level two, a1 level three, etc.) or add my own list of words. the rest is super customizable too! you can also choose which tenses you want to work on and what set of pronouns you want to focus on (for example, european spanish uses “vosotros” while latin american spanish does not).
S C I E N C E
molview
build your own molecules or search ones that already exist to explore what they’re used for, their structure, their composition, 2-d/3-d models, formulas, molecular weight, etc.
ptable
this dynamic periodic table has a million features for each element, which makes it perfect for researching and figuring out why the table is laid out the way it is.
phet
this is basically a virtual stem lab---atom-builders, circuit-builders, wave simulations, and interactive tools galore! it covers physics, chemistry, biology, math, and html5, though i’ve only used first three categories, so i can’t exactly recommend the others.
M A T H
geogebra or desmos
these babies are graphing tools perfect for checking functions and all that jazz (they’re basically the exact same except geogebra has a couple more bells and whistles).
symbolab
use this to check your answers and review the steps if you’re stuck! when it gets into some nitty-gritty stuff, you have to have the paid plan to see some of the steps, but i think it’s helpful enough that you can stick with the free version. it covers pre-alg, alg, pre-calc, calc, functions, matrices & vectors, geometry, trig, stats, physics, chem, finance, conversions, etc. (i use this to avoid silly mistakes and the ixl rage that follows haha).
mathway*
this is very similar to symbolab except that it doesn’t show any steps at all unless you pay for a plan. you can use this for basic math, pre-alg, alg, trig, pre-calc, calc, stats, finite math, etc. as a cross-checker in case symbolab is being funky.

2, 6, 12, 14, 27, 47.... foods questions
2. Grilled cheese or PB&J?
pbj, always. i like grilled cheese, sometimes. there are some truly delectable grilled cheese sandwiches out there. and it’s hard to beat a grilled cheese with your tomato soup on a cold night.
but peanut butter is the forbidden fruit.
my mother is allergic to a great many things. this has influenced my taste in two ways. some of the foods she can’t eat, i have developed a serious distaste for. shellfish, salmon, most preparations of eggplant, etc. even some things which she dislikes because even though she’s not allergic to, it seems that she ought to be, like coconut, i hate.
but sometimes it went the opposite way. some of these forbidden foods - tamarind, pumpkin seeds, sesame, cherries - i covet. peanut butter is in this second category.
though i must say, i don’t usually go for jam on my peanut butter sandwiches. i tend to go elvis style, banana slices and honey. occasionally i will treat myself to a fluffernutter, a monstrosity which, if you have never lived in new england, i gleefully invite you to google.
6.  Top three cuisines?
okay. i’m officially declaring that this will be americanized versions only. i’ve traveled a lot, over the course of my life, and i’ve always eaten like a king, even in countries whose national cuisine is universally reviled. but i feel like it’s unfair to compare that way, you know? so this is gonna be just for stuff i eat in america, or make at home.
- italian food, but only the way they do it in new haven, connecticut, and surrounding areas.
- chinese food because if you told me right now if i could never eat another bao i’d die on the spot, actually. this is also cheating a little because some of the chinese food i cook myself is a lot more like chinese-chinese food than americanized chinese food, since i’ve actually been to china and stuff, but even if i were to never cook my own chinese food again and only ate at american chinese restaurants it would still be on here.
- third is hard. third is hard. thai food? polish food? indian food? vietnamese food? it’s hard. i think i’m going to have to go with japanese food. i would be a hypocrite if i didn’t, because i just spent two hours making a passable imitation of takoyaki, with vegetarian fish chunks.
i feel kind of odd about this, because i’ve always had the sense that americanized japanese food is even further from japanese-japanese food than most americanized cuisines, because it’s so limited in scope. like, american japanese food is pretty limited to either sushi, or trendy street food/ramen places.
i always had the impression that, for example, while american chinese food is very americanized, and really only reflects the cuisine of guangdong, it might at least have something to do with what immigrants from guangdong were eating at home during the early waves of chinese immigration. i have similar impressions with other immigrant cuisines. but i do not have this impression with american japanese food, since it was really limited to sushi and whatever side dishes sushi places sold, and the expansion of things like ramen shops and street food in the last few years seem to be driven less by immigration and more by a rising trend of mainstream western culinary orientalism and weeabooism. so i feel like it’s probably incorrect to claim japanese food is one of my favorite cuisines since the american version of it is so limited.
also, just realized that i would die for a good banh mi right now so i’m changing my answer, vietnamese food.
12.  What do you get on your bagels? What WOULD you get if you had access to anything you wanted?
you can’t go wrong with a good egg and cheese. i nearly always get an egg and cheese. they’re unbeatable.
sometimes, in a certain mood, i will get strawberry cream cheese instead. sometimes, in a very certain mood, i might get just plain cream cheese, but that’s unusual.
it really does not matter what you get on a bagel. what makes or breaks a bagel sandwich is not the filling, but the bagel itself. a good bagel could make sawdust and coffee grounds delicious, and no filling on earth can save a bad bagel.
there are, of course, mediocre bagels in the world, but those are best treated with the same respect as ordinary sandwich bread, and filled accordingly.
14.  Favorite mug you own
i don’t own a ton of mugs, but since, i’m home with my parents right now, and they have a whole collection, i’ll give me favorite of theirs, which is my mom’s spock mug.
what makes this mug special is that it’s as big in terms of volume as a cappuccino mug without actually being one. instead of being as wide or wider than it is tall like a cappuccino mug, it has the same proportions as a normal mug, just scaled up. this makes it easier to hold, and easier to drink from, while still being fucking huge. plus, the wide mouths of cappuccino mugs when compared to their height mean that anything held in them goes cold in five seconds flat, while this mug has the upright shape of a traditional mug and so holds heat longer.
also, this mug has spock on it.
27.  What section do you immediately head for when you walk into a bookstore?
i’m not a huge bookstore person? i’m very hesitant about acquiring new material possession which have a finite term of usefulness, even moreso if i have to actually pay for them, and i am well aware that i will read most books only once, and some not at all. for actual reading material, i tend to prefer libraries or ebooks, to keep from adding more unmanageable clutter to my disastrous living space. libraries especially, since they’re free, and also i have a deadline to either read the damn book or give up on it.
in libraries, i tend to head for either the y.a. or adult genre fiction sections, since that’s what i go for, though usually when i come into a library i already have a book in mind. i also tend to head to audiobooks. i love audiobooks, they’re wonderful, i’ve gotten through so many books that way.
however, when i do go to bookstores, i don’t go to the stuff i would normally actually read. in more chain-y, new-book bookstores, i tend to go to the novelty books, the kind of stuff libraries don’t have. coffee table books with pictures of cats, comic collections, joke books. and i tend to check out the displays, see what’s up.
i’m also way more likely to go to the nonfiction sections of these kinds of bookstores than used bookstores or libraries, for two reasons. first, because i tend to think nonfiction makes for good gifts. if you give someone a book it comes with strings attached, no matter what, but those strings are different for different kinds of books. a novel comes with an obligation to read it cover to cover, and not just read it, but enjoy it, or at least come up with an interesting opinion on its contents. a nonfiction book does not have to be enjoyable, merely informative, and it’s a lot easier to be informed by a book than to like one. plus, most of the time you don’t actually need to read the whole thing, because although they do tend to have overall arcs and maybe overarching arguments, a lot of nonfiction books can be informative even if consumed in small chunks. second, because in chain-y, new book bookstores, the nonfiction section tends to be glutted with the sort of fun, digestible pop-nonfiction that i tend to read if i must go for nonfiction, while libraries and used bookstores run more towards the drier, probably more informative but less enjoyable sort.
in used bookstores, i tend towards a different pattern. what i look for in used bookstores is stuff that’s interesting because it’s old. cookbooks, art books, fifty cent science fiction novels. i especially like very old history and social science books; near my college there was a used bookstore that had an entire shelf of psychoanalysis books, and another of histories of like, medieval european art and design, all written in like the forties. the kind of stuff that’s out of print so wouldn’t be in a new bookstore, but is probably outdated, inaccurate, useless, and unpopular, so it isn’t in too many libraries either.
47.  How do you top your ice cream?
i’m not a huge ice cream person? like, ice cream gives me a stomach ache pretty much uhhhh always. if i’m having it in my house, scooped into a bowl, i don’t generally top it with anything, ditto with stuff i get from an ice cream shop, but the most common way i eat ice cream is actually in like, bar form? like you know those dove bars, like a bar of vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate. does that count?
i definitely like stuff mixed into my ice cream, i’m a fiend for cookie dough and brownie chunks. maybe my favorite ice cream flavor ever came from a local ice cream shop which has tragically since shut down. it was called kettle crunch and it had chocolate covered potato chips mixed in.
i guess i always get toppings at like, those trendy froyo places that go by weight and have a buffet of toppings? but honestly, when i go to those places, i rarely get any actual froyo. usually i just fill my bowl with popping boba because they always have it and i love it. i get some fruit too, and sometimes i get some of the candy, like a few gummy worms or a kit kat. but the popping boba is the star of the show.
ok now i’ve gotten distracted researching buying popping boba online. apparently it’s not hard, but it seems like a lot of the time it comes in seven pound bucket. like i could get a small amount of the common flavors, but i have just now right now discovered that there is such a thing as chocolate popping boba and i’m losing it because it only comes in seven pound buckets but i need it.
also, chilli pepper popping boba, which has the same problem, but also holy fuck.

do I have that book challenge
tagged by @elizabethsyson and while photos were absolutely helpful (for example, in explaining the first question) I did this mostly from memory in downtime at work so I couldn't exactly take pictures as I went, and tbh I don't trust tumblr not to eat my post if I upload a bunch of pictures at once
Do you have a book with deckled edges?
thank you so much for the picture because if that's the thing with the pages not exactly matching up, (but within a small deviation from perfectly square) yes, my copy of the first three Dragonriders of Pern books in one volume has deckled edges. also probably some other books, but I've been reading that one recently so I'm sure about it
Do you have a book with 3 or more people on the cover?.
yeah: Inverloch (Volume 1)
it's the printed version of (the first portion of) a webcomic, which I didn't know when I picked it up at a garage sale or something. I hadn't even heard of webcomics yet
and. hm. don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the premise of the story and it was never really bad... I was thrilled when I realized it was a webcomic and still online and i could read the whole thing.
but
the major plot twist, one the author had apparently planned from the very beginning, honestly had some very unfortunate implications that would haunt me if I ever attempted a reread.
Like, it was set up well enough to be a surprise but not a shock. and it enabled the happy ending. but I probably would have preferred almost any other happy or vaguely positive ending, or even a meaningful depressing ending, I was that disappointed
on the other hand the rest of it was written well enough that I cared so.... eh. it is what it is
I'm just not sure I still love it enough to recommend, but I also wouldn't stop someone from picking it up off my shelf to read, you know what I mean? Especially just that first part, which was plenty good.
Do you have a book based on another fictional story?
D&D guidebooks are totally based on Lord of the Rings, right?
lol in reality uh
the copy of Scandinavian folk tales including my favorite fairy tale ever was always my dad's, not mine, no matter how many times I read it before moving out
uh
my wife has several Halo books? like the video game. I'm not actually sure which came first and I haven't read any of those, but they are on "my" (our) shelf
I also have a lot of Harry Potter meta/derivatives, including that themed Haggadah I think I posted a picture of recently. But the phrasing of this question makes me think the intent is "fiction based on other fiction" so none of those quite count.
so yeah, Halo's the closest I've got. also there's a Star Trek book on that shelf that I didn't even know we had until I went looking for clocks on covers
Do you have a book with a title 10 letters long?
Sadly I don't have my own copy of Dragon's Kin, which kicks off an excellent subseries of Pern books, (nor Dragonsong but I didn't expect to have that one) but what I did find was
The Visitor (which is animorphs#2)
Do you have a book with a title that starts and ends with the same letter?
Erec Rex: The Dragon's Eye
Do you have a Mass Market Paperback book?
does my solid half of the animorphs series all on one shelf count or is this looking for specific branding?
Do you have a book written by an author using a pen name?
(immediately thinks of Lewis Carrol) um Edwin Abbot was also a mathematician but sadly not a penname, but I do I have a copy of Flatland
Oh, but I'm pretty sure I have some of the ghostwritten animorphs books, do those count? Specifically someone mentioned recently that animorphs 25 was the first of the ghostwritten books and I definitely have that one
Do you have a book with a character’s name in the title?
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Ender's Shadow on my shelf, the rest I mostly have as ebooks. also the first Erec Rex book (mentioned above) and the entire Kirsten (American Girl) series plus the first Kit book.
Do you have a book with 2 maps in it?
the first one I found was The Malloreon Volume 1 (also has 3 characters on the cover). it's got a map of the western kingdoms before the first book and a map of Mallorea in the middle of the third book
Do you have a book that was turned into a TV show
Animorphs again
Do you have a book written by someone who is originally famous for something else?(celebrity/athlete/politician/tv personality…)
I definitely had a phase of buying books by famous people, so I have the worst bulkiest copy of Origin of Species which is printed in a terrible font (it also has deckled edges for that matter), and The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, that I could find at a quick glance. Probably something by Steven Hawking hiding somewhere
my phenomenal copy of The Elements (Euclid) doesn't quite count because he's most famous, now, for writing those so...
(Einstein's Relativity - in translation obviously because I know very little German - is deceptively short but that was my parents' book that I tried and failed to read, not my own)
Do you have a book with a clock on the cover?
Disappointingly, An Uncommon History of Common Things does not. I do have a Doctor Who coloring book with a clocklike gear pattern on the cover which is the closest I'm finding
Do you have a poetry book?
yeah someone once gave me a book of Japanese death poems, translated of course. I've been meaning to read them. for that I have to find it, and I can't right now :/ now that I remember the book I want to go read it
Do you have a book with an award stamp on it?
not that I can find? apparently Dragonflight or Dragonquest won "a Hugo or Nebula award" (bc McCaffrey was the first woman to win one of those) but wikipedia isn't telling me which award or which book, and I don't have the dust jacket for the original-trilogy-in-one-volume copy that I have so there's no telling if it "should" have an award printed on the front
Do you have a book written by an author with the same initials as you?
ooh wouldn't that be fun. I don't seem to :/
what I do have is a book written by an author with what my initials would be if I had taken my wife's last name instead of the other way around which I guess is close enough
Do you have a book of short stories?
yes, surprisingly. The Girl Who Heard Dragons and I haven't read any of them, not even the story I got it for
oh, and First Meetings, which is a bunch of short stories in the Ender universe
Do you have a book that is between 500-510 pages long?
That's... really specific. Closest I could find was 483 pages and 513 pages (Volume 2 of The Belgariad and The Malloreon, respectively) In general I have a lot of books around 300-350 pages and a fair few over 700 pages, but not many close to 500
Do you have a book that was turned into a movie?
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, for sure. I think Flatland was also made into a movie and it was as phenomenally terrible as you would expect of a story about 2d shapes. not even shapes with faces, just shapes, and one sphere.
Do you have a graphic novel?
I was going to make all sorts of qualifications of "well... if something originally published as a webcomic is now in physical book form.... (Inverloch again) but actually I have volumed 1 and 3-7 of Tomo (manga-style "preteen protag moves in with Christian family members and has both fantasy adventures and learns the benefits of being Christian" no-subtlety series that I picked up at Family Christian Stores when they were still everywhere. also I probably still have the first six Serenity "books" but I can't find them (not fantasy: rebellious "sinful" teen moves to new school and hangs out with the Christians because she wants to sleep with one of them, eventually sees the errors of all her ways, un-dyes her hair, and converts. Also no subtlety)
I had a phase when I was "too old" for veggie tales but still thought FCS was the best place ever but if that really was the best of their "teen" content it really wasn't great
Do you have a book written by 2 or more authors?
are we limiting this to novels? I have The Great Snape Debate (meta published before Deathly Hallows, with short chapters by two alternating authors, plus they got Orson Scott Card to write a chapter to draw reader attention with the big name and hey it worked, I bought it, arguing (between all of them) both sides of "will Snape turn out to be on Harry's side after all" and also The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern which as the title implies, is more of a guide than a real story.
Oh, but I do have a copy of Invasive Procedures (Card & Johnson).
Did I miss any questions? tumblr's being particularly weird today.
anyway I suppose I should tag some fellow bookworms. @knightbusofdoom @copperscales and if anyone else wants me to edit to in so you're "really" tagged, just may me know, and if you just want to do it please do and tag me back
