Despite how badly Jaehyuk wanted to be cuddled up with you right now, he felt like he was okay with this.

You had wanted to go for a walk through the park since the leaves were changing, and who was he to deny you when you were so excited? You had even packed your little sketchbook into your bag, smiling to yourself as you took his hand. Eventually, he would end up with either his head on your shoulder or in your lap as you painted. Most of your little nature dates with Jaehyuk ended like that: with you and your tiny travel watercolor kit, and him admiring you as you painted. But for now? For now, he would hold your hand as you talked about your classes and how they were going.

Yet he couldn’t fight back the smile when he watched you purposefully step onto dead leaves, just to hear them crunch underneath your boots. Cute, cute—you’re so cute. How were you this cute? Jaehyuk’s friends teased him for how enamored he was when it came to you. It felt like he loved every little quirk you had, but he’d argue that he felt that way for pretty much all of his friends. He liked the little quirks that made a person them.

“I have a test in class next week, actually…” You sighed. “I should probably be studying for it, but I didn’t really want to when it’s so pretty today.”

He nodded along. “Have you seen a spot you want to paint yet?”

A flustered look crossed your face as you fought back a smile, cheeks likely burning with embarrassment at how well he knew you. Why be embarrassed, he wondered to himself, to have a boyfriend that knew you? Then again, maybe you weren’t so much as embarrassed that he knew you so well, but that he’d pretty much pegged the thought that lingered in the back of your mind. You were on the lookout for something pretty that you could paint, after all… It was too nice out to not capture the scenery.

“Not yet,” you mumbled, tugging your hoodie closer to you.

Wordlessly, Jaehyuk pulled his hand free from your own. He’d reached up to unwrap the scarf he was wearing, bristling slightly at the chill in the air.

“You don’t have to—”

I do, he thought to himself, because I care about you, and I know you get cold easily. He’d stopped you, wrapping his scarf around your neck before leaning in to steal a quick peck. “Better?”

Shyly, you nodded after a moment. “Better.”

With a chuckle, he stole another quick kiss from you. How could he not when you were so adorable to him? He slipped his hand into yours again, intertwining his fingers with your own. You could keep him warm that way (or, if he felt particularly cheesy, he’d tease you later by saying his burning love for you was enough to keep him warm). Besides, it wasn’t too cold outside. It was autumn, and it wasn’t the warmest, but he would be fine in the layers he already had on.

When you stepped onto the grass, Jaehyuk knew that you’d found something you found pretty enough to paint. Now you just had to find a nice spot and work from there. He let go of your hand as you made your way over to a nearby tree, turning and chewing at the inside of your cheek as you debated whether this was the spot or not. After a moment you set your bag down, and sank down to sit at the base of the tree, already moving to get your supplies out. Jaehyuk didn’t mind these dates in the slightest: he liked being able to be close to you. He lowered himself onto the ground next to you, pulling out his earbuds before offering up one to you. You accepted it with a smile, and he snuggled in closer, resting his head on your shoulder as he watched you begin to sketch.

Now that he was looking at it, he could see what you liked. The vibrant red and orange leaves that painted the sidewalk, the river in the distance providing a nice contrast to it all, and the way the golden sun painted it all in this warm glow. It was gorgeous, even if it wasn’t his favorite sight in the park (that would always be you). But he snuggled in a little more, smiling to himself as he watched you work.

“Are you warm enough?” You asked after a few minutes. “I can give you back the scarf if you want.”

He merely let out a blissful sigh, shutting his eyes for a moment. “I’m good,” he mumbled. He would always be fine if he was next to you.

(He wouldn’t fail to notice the later sketch in your sketchbook, though, of his head in your lap, drawn after you’d finished your vibrant little watercolor painting.)

PAIRING :: yoon jaehyuk x fem!reader GENRE :: high school au, best friend au SUMMARY :: it's the last day of school and you look back on the past with jaehyuk whilst eating ice cream on top of a hill overlooking the sports track while the sun starts to set WORD COUNT :: 0.765k WARNINGS :: profanities, food and a scraped knee [📂] CHERRY'S NOTE :: this was loosely based of my last day of year 11 (sophomore year) before i headed off to college/sixth form, where we had a fun day and signed our school uniforms. this is basically me reminiscing my last day hahah

“You know it’s quite bittersweet,” you sighed whilst looking at the sports track. The same sports track you fell down whilst trying to complete 1600m with no stops. Let’s just say, you are not going to do that ever again. Luckily Jaehyuk came to your aid and helped you with your scraped knee.

A hazy and scenic feel was created by the sun, a perfect balance from the action-packed day you had. From touring round the school to see how many people will sign your school uniform to the very emotional assembly your year sat in where you went down a memory lane. You would gladly say that the day was more exciting than the day you got accepted to your dream university abroad. The old oak tree which you were both under was the only thing that was keeping you cool from the blazing heat. It was moments like this when everything came crashing down to you and you realised the harsh reality of everything.

“What’s bittersweet?” Jaehyuk asked as he tucked into his ice lolly which was slowly starting to melt from the heat. He let out a satisfied hum, confirming that the ice lolly tasted like what it’s described to say, watermelon and strawberries.

You were hesitant to reply. Maybe you were being emotional and childish for no reason. “This. The whole last day of school thing. It feels like the friendship we built is just a waste of time. We both know we won’t stay in contact with each other at university. I’m going to go off to study abroad whilst you’re going to be too busy at law school… It just hurts,” you mumbled, trying to not make eye contact with Jaehyuk. Not sure what to do next, you lay down on the ground, letting your body rest from the exhausting day you had. Nothing was said for a few seconds.

Jaehyuk pulls you up from the ground so you were both at the same level. You tried to avoid his eyes, but it was no use. He reassuringly held your hand with his non-occupied hand. It was a sign of comfort, something you hated as it showed that you were emotionally weak. “That doesn’t change the fact that the last few years I’ve had with you have been the best experience of my life. Every moment I spent with you I didn’t take for granted because you are the reason why I turn up to school with a smile. Our friendship is not going to go to waste. When you are 27, you are going to look back and remember the memories we’ve created, the strong friendship we had,” he said.

He was correct. You recalled the fond memories you created with Jaehyuk. He witnessed you at your best and when you hit rock bottom in life. “Fuck, you are going to make me cry,” you laughed whilst dabbing on your eyes as small teardrops started to form. A smile formed on Jaehyuk’s lips, he too wanted to cry. You were always there for him even when he was lost. Whether it was sitting in silence together or hugging him, he greatly appreciated you.

There was a moment of comfortable silence.

“Oh my god, I haven’t signed your shirt,” you gasped whilst searching through your bag to grab a red marker. How could you forget to sign your best friend's shirt. In your defence, you were both very busy with other people’s shirts and parading around the school as if you still have many more years to complete.

“Yeah you haven’t, I’m quite upset you didn’t notice,” he fake cried. He sat up straight to make it easier for you to sign his shirt. Honestly, he saved a space for you to sign, right where his heart sat. Though he wasn’t going to say that because he knew you would tease him forever.

“Shut up,” you laughed, “It’s not like you have that much space left Mr popular boy. Your shirt is full to the brim with messages. You have messages from Areum, Eunae, Heejin… Oh! Even Mr Kim, the deputy head academic! He must really love you.”

“Hurry up and sign my shirt. My ice cream is melting because of you” Jaehyuk pouted. You thought carefully on what message to write on his shirt. No words formulated in your mind when you started to think about what to write. You wanted to write your heart out to show your gratitude to him. Finally, you decided on something short but sweet.
