When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, drifters, and misfits, a second-rate circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town. A veterinary student who almost earned his degree, Jacob is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to reach her.

I cooked for my boyfriend and step daughter today, but made myself something else and was so surprised I actually didn’t eat what I cooked for them.
Made them fancy French dips with fresh sliced beef, au jus, and provolone. Melted the cheese/toasted the bread in the broiler and warmed the meat in the au jus. Gave them Mac n cheese on the side.
I ate sautéed mushrooms and a very small avocado (my favorite lately). Oh and an orange later on. After fasting (other than like 3 tiny pieces of food at work but I’m not counting it because I do not feel like a glutton for punishment tonight)for just under 24 hours.
I’m not big in real person standards, but I can already see a change after of few days of hopping on the restriction bus. No bloat, much less tummy, and just feeling much better though I am so far from where I hope to be in a week or two.
My boyfriend got me a bunch of books today and it was so so sweet and thoughtful. I am almost done with “Water for Elephants”, and so far I can feel it building to a horrifyingly sad end, but it is masterful. I am a huge Twilight nerd since back in the days when the books came out and in my head I keep seeing Eddie Boi as Jacob Jankowski the main character since he starred in the movie. I am not mad at this and will continue to picture him this way :)
My page isn’t really geared towards books but with my book challenge I am doing I think I might try to compile a master post of all the books I’ve completed so far this year, and hopefully some sort of short review on the off chance anyone else sucked into my preferred side of tumblr like books too. Trying to will a bookish friend into my inbox, so I have someone to gush over books with eventually.
I’m off work tomorrow and I think I’m gonna take a long walk in the woods with my darling pittie mix Mu-Moo. She loves to see squirrels dart on the paths, and there’s a picturesque dock midway through the trail that I love to walk down and look at the water and sky. Maybe tranquility will catch up with me there while I try to walk off some fat and calories.
Ps I’m telepathically sending all of you thoughts of encouragement on your journey wether you suffer ongoingly or are in recovery. May the world take you (and your body) in the way you desire.
Xo, K.B.

If you like elephants, here are a few books about them that are worth reading
Modoc, the true story of the greatest elephant that ever lived by Ralph Helfer is based on real events and tells the story of the lifelong friendship between a man and an elephant. They were born in the same day in a same family and formed a bond so strong that nothing could ever break it, not even 20 years they spend apart. Modoc is a story full of adventures, some of which are true, some hearsay and some totally imaginary
The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony is a story of an elephant herd with a reputation of being troublesome. The herd often escaped from their previous home, and when they arrived at Thula Thula they immediately took to the hills. Elephants were caught, but at first they struggle in settling in their new home. However, Anthony’s exceptional approach paid off and soon the herd could be let out of the boma. After the difficult start, a close and confidential relationship gradually develops between Anthony and the herd
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen tells the story of now 93-years-old Jacob Jankowski, who ended up on the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth in the summer of -31 after the unexpected death of his parents. In the circus he works as a veterinarian even though he didn’t pass the final exam. An elephant named Rosie is acquired for the circus, who everyone considers stupid until Jacob realizes Rosie understands only Polish which also happens to be Jacob's first language. Uncle-Al, the owner of the circus, orders Jacob, the equestrian director August Rosenthul and his wife Marlena to create a elephant show. Jacob falls in love with Marlena and don’t really get along with August ‘cause he treats Rosie badly. The situation eventually escalates and leads to a murder

At its core lies the captivating journey of Jacob Jankowski, portrayed by Grant Gustin and Gregg Edelman, as he navigates love, loss, and redemption amidst the colorful backdrop of the circus. After The Flash, Grant Gustin Makes His Broadway Debut In Water For Elephants
After playing crime-fighting superhero Barry Allen on “The Flash” for nearly a decade, Grant Gustin has happily run away and joined the circus. The Virginia-born actor can be found under the big top ― Broadway’s version of it, that is ― in the musical adaptation of “Water for Elephants,” which opened at New York’s Imperial Theatre last month. He stars as Jacob Jankowski, a…

"Water For Elephants" at the Imperial Theatre will enjoy what I think will be a long run on Broadway. Like "Music Man" and "Back to The Future", this wonderful musical will appeal to people of all ages and all walks of life. The music and lyrics by Pigpen Theatre Co. are not overly memorable, the choreography by Jesse Robb is simple and plain, however, the acting, the book by Rick Elice the direction by Jessica Stone and the circus design and acrobatics by Shana Carroll (Cirque du Soleil's Crystal) are outstanding.
Based on the book by Sara Gruen, "Water" takes us to the depression; the circus, the people and animals in the Benzini Brothers Circus are the story-line. We get to see two Jankowski's, the younger Jacob (Grant Gustin) and Mr. Jankowski (Gregg Edelman). He is a veterinarian from Cornell who never finished his studies. He turns out to be a huge help to the penny pinching owner, August (Paul Alexander Nolan) who bought the circus from Benzini back in 1929. The good Doctor would fall smitten with August's wife, Marlena (Isabelle McCalla). August has a foul temper, he is often ruthless with his employees and worse with the treatment of his animals As the plot goes on, both tension and tempers flair, people are pushed to the brink (both literally and figuratively).
What makes "Water For Elephants" a standout is the star cast, the supporting cast and its ensemble. The sound and the projections too are quite remarkable; the costumes (David Israel Reynoso), the scenic design (Takeshi Kata) and the lighting (Bradley King) all complement what is a great evening of theater.
When this musical opens up full throttle is when the audience becomes most enchanted... songs that do its magic are: "Anywhere/ Another Train", "I Choose the Ride", "I Shouldn't Be Surprised", "You've Got Nothing" and "Go Home". It is these songs that have the actors giving its audience full singing and dancing; the lights and sounds are whirlwind. The audience laps up the circus atmosphere, it loves the protagonist/antagonist part of the show. In Jessica Stone's direction, the animals come to life onstage and they become a big part of the story. In both a simple way and a very visual way, "Water For Elephants" should not be missed!
.........................................................................................................................
I recently went to a performance at AMT called "Gallery". Although it was a run through for a later staged performance in New Hampshire, some of the songs and some of the singers were very talented. It will be very interesting to see how it is staged and directed. The premise of the musical is that famous artists have their work projected on the back of the theater while the different actors sing a song about the work that is presented in front of us. Both catchy and pithy, this new musical may take hold.
........................................................................................................................
As this very full Spring season is upon us we welcome up "Tommy", "Suffs", "Hells Kitchen" "The Wiz" and "The Great Gatsby". The two shows that most are waiting for is both "Tommy" and "Cabaret". Early word on "Tommy" is that is the best thing right now on Broadway and it is still in previews! "Cabaret" has been running raves with its great lead actor since it played on London's West End.
Other shows that should delight are "The Mother Play", which has a first rate cast," Mary Jane" and "Uncle Vayna" at Lincoln Center with Steve Carrell in the lead. "Stereophonic" will be coming later in the season along with "Heart of Rock and Roll". Stay tuned! Reviews and more reviews to come!

From the EW article:
“The Flash star Grant Gustin to make Broadway debut leading Water for Elephants
The Glee actor will play Jacob opposite Shucked's Isabelle McCalla as Marlena.
By Maureen Lee Lenker Published on November 3, 2023
Broadway is about to get a little flashier.
EW can exclusively announce that Grant Gustin, best known to audiences as Barry Allen on the CW's The Flash and villainous Warbler Sebastian on Glee, will make his Broadway debut this spring in a new musical adaptation of Sara Gruen's bestselling novel Water for Elephants.
Gustin will star as Jacob opposite Isabelle McCalla (The Prom, Shucked) as Marlena. The cast will also feature Gregg Edelman as Mr. Jankowski, Paul Alexander Nolan as August, Stan Brown as Camel, Joe De Paul as Walter, Sara Gettelfinger as Barbara, and Wade McCollum as Wade.
"This was my original dream as a kid," Gustin tells EW of making his Broadway debut. "I started tap dancing first as an 8-year-old and then theater at 10, and this is where I always wanted to be. It's very surreal and exciting and terrifying and all the appropriate emotions. I'm beyond thrilled to join the company. I can't wait to start rehearsals and meet everybody and get on stage again."
With a book from Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) and a score from PigPen Theater Company, Water for Elephants follows the story of Jacob Jankoswki (Gustin), as he remembers his life from a nursing home in old age. As a young man, Jacob, an aspiring veterinarian hops a train, which turns out to be a circus train. There, he befriends Camel (Brown), who gets him a job with the circus, and finds a life beyond his wildest dreams with the cruel animal trainer August and his beautiful wife and circus performer, Marlena (McCalla), whom Jacob falls for.”
