We sat and stared till our eyes filled like a glass of wine. I did it, the thing I’d dreamt a million times. I undressed you slowly, each item of clothing fell with a sigh.

I ended up having a think last night about my time at university. We were just coming out of the section 28 era in Scotland and I’d been an incredibly sheltered child thanks to super-religious family. I’d started branching out on knowledge when I got my own library card so I knew fragments and pieces of stuff, but there was a big old void that I couldn’t quite understand and I knew it was important.
When I went to uni, I did a double whammy of English with Film&Media and in my very first semester, before section 28 was repealed, we were given a reading list that included my first conscious encounter with anything trans: Jackie Kay’s Trumpet. It’s a fascinating and heart-breaking and uplifting novel inspired by the life of Billy Tipton, a trans Jazz musician who was outed after his death.
I remember reading it and realising this. This was the void. This was the thing I had been circling around but couldn’t put a name to. It took me a long, long time to actually figure myself out in full, but that book shone a light on the blank spot and saying “this is what you’ve been trying to understand”.
I’ve kept a copy of that book ever since and 20+ years on, it still resonates with me so very much.

A poem by Jackie Kay

Baby Lazarus
When I got home I went out into the garden Liking it when the frost bit My old brown boots And dug a hole the size of a baby And buried the clothes I'd bought anyway, just in case.
A week later I stood at my window And saw the ground move And swell the promise of a crop; That's when she started crying.
I gave her a service then Sang Ye Banks And Braes Planted a bush of roses Read from the Bible, the book of Job Cursed myself digging a pit for my baby Sprinkling ash from the grate.
Late that same night She came in by the window My baby Lazarus And suckled at my breast.

What I gather from my english literature classes is :
- Caesar is the best character and I honestly rooted for him (Antony you are fool and Cleo.... wow you can manipulate)
- I didn't even see where the fuck Lucy and George's romance start and how is better and more natural than Lucy and Cecil's. Freddy seems cool, though.
- I like Jackie Kay's poems.
