I am so fucking glad that the MCU has moved onto television because we finally get to pause
Don't get me wrong, I love the marvel movies but they were always very limited in what they were able to do
At best we get maybe 10 minutes of peace before everything goes into chaos, because that's the general theory of movies
Because they need to appeal to the wider audience of the general public, and they have to convince people to spend a significant amount of money in the cinema
So they are limited in what they have space for the theory of peace, chaos back to (relative) peace
Which is why I LOVE the new TV series, because we get to sit with out characters for more than 5 minutes
While they are incredible at showing their characters moral code and stories through fight scenes, watching Bucky and Sam on the boat really really solidifies their relationship to the audience, in a way we were kinda missing, this sort of extended scene would have probably been cut from a movie for both time management and because of the tension building
Similarly in Wandavision we just wouldn't have had so much content of her loving her family but the fact that we did made it so much more heartbreaking when it was destroyed. Although its not mcu this can definitely be compared to xmen apocalypse, where magnetos wife and family are murdered in the same 10 minutes they are introduced - in the first act
Idk where I was going with this, but I'm SO GLAD that they made tfatws a TV show not a movie THAT'S ALL

God AND ANOTHER THING that scene with bucky and Zemo before the Wakandans arrived was SO amazing to me
Because I just loved the fact that we see Zemo tell bucky that he's decided not to kill him and we never find out why
I don't love it actually I really really REALLY hope we find out why he won't in episode 6 but I digress
Because Zemo and Bucky have such a bizarre and weird respect for each other, their relationship so indescribable and complex I love what the actors and writers did with them
Because I feel like bucky resents Zemo for obviously civil war related reasons but also appreciates how Zemo challenges him and his own morality (this may be a reach)
I just loved that Zemo tells him that he was programmed to kill and we see Bucky make his own stance on morality with his gun filled with blanks
(and of course the call back to the line 'that's a relief')
I love that over the course of the five episodes I do think we see the power dynamic completely change as Bucky was so easily shaken by Zemo initially
And this scene links so brilliantly with the line with Sam where he's told not to let Steve or anyone else define him
That's one of the things I love about this series, we are finally seeing Sam and Bucky become their own men

I love how they handled Isaiah and Sam in this episode and how they let us sit with the knowledge of what happened to him
So often in all movies we learn a piece of information and our protagonists IMMEDIATELY respond (usually badly tbh) and its the consequences of those actions which they spend the rest of the movie solving
For example we have age of Ultron where Tony immediately builds this weapon, they then have to face the consequences.
Even within the show we have Walker leaving his best friends corpse in favour of revenge - the show is clearly criticising the flippant attitude which he has to serious issues
Because they make that point, Sam takes time to reflect on what Isaiah tells him the TV format allows him to do that. We see him decide for himself what the shield and the mantle of cpatian America means to him
It would have been so incredibly easy for marvel to have made tfatws into a cute buddycop series with little to no actual social statements
But they didn't, and I love that when we get to see Sam finally take that shield it's not because Bucky guilted him into it, or in honour of steve or even avoiding it on the advice of Isaiah
This series shows us who Sam Wilson is as a person and what he stands for, and we have finally been given time to see it

Hmmm this may be a reach but I just want to talk about the apology scene from episode 5, and how we saw Buckys attitude to Sam change during the course of the show
Bc despite Bucky hounding Sam for much of the seires about his decision to drop the shied, we never actually see him respect Sam's leadership (until now)
Like, the breaking out of Zemo and even the fight scenes in Madripoor show how Bucky isn't willing to follow Sam, despite what he says verbally
He seems to me to be still acting as a solo project, and I don't think the writers made the fact that nearly every decision Bucky makes for the team goes wrong unintentially
And this is also to show why Steve never gave him the shield in the first place. (and shuts up the buckycap stans) If we ignore the trauma and everything Bucky still was never a leader, he followed orders all the way through his military life
Which is part of the reason why Bucky finds 2023 reality so hard to cope with, he doesn't know how to lead either himself or a team and I think he sees himself in Zemo as someone he could become, so consumed by revenge and suffering, the lone wolf
So when bucky tells Zemo 'we're gonna do it our own way' we see him reject the shackles of hydra and finally choses who he wants to-be, and who he wants to follow
That's why I think the apology scene is so important, both for bucky and for Sam. For Sam, to have not even the one person who tries to get him to take shield back trusted his judgement earlier in the series. But now with Buckys apology Sam is able to trust that they will be partners, and that Bucky cares enough about him to not leave him in the dark. By apologising for his misjudgements, bucky also is now able to accept when he's at fault, which shows such character growth considerung the bullshit amends.
(also this is the first time Bucky has chosen who he follows orders from since the war, had Sam become captain America in the beginning of the show, we never would have seen Bucky regain autonomy over his decisions in such a strong way)

TFATWS EPISODE 5 SPOILERS
Good GOD that courtroom scene was so amazing - the writers of this show r ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE
I loved this scene, not because i like John Walker but because the dialogue in this was insaneeee
Like the fact that he was able to shout in court and walk out is a whole other post in itself, the epitome of privelege but I just wanna touch on another part
I loved when Walker really really brought to a point how he has done everything he's been told to do. Because, he's right.
The United States foreign military policy is so incredibly violent, their domestic affairs not being far behind either. The whole 'American Way' is about being the best, being perfect and that makes them feel completely infallible.
Like, that's one of the reasons why a lot of nationalistic Americans refuse to acknowledge the countries flaws, or blatently lie about them
John Walker was chosen as Captain America because that's exactly the attitude America has. He believes himself to be completely right in all circumstances, lying to Lemar's parents showed that perfectly
That's exactly why I loved the courtroom scene, he's being tried by America but when he says that 'you made me' he's absolutely right. The True American mentality, the violence which state officials r able to do without serious consequence, and especially when we factor in the lack of mental health facilities which are offered to veterans
And so while everyone's made this point a million times but it bears repeating: John Walker is what America is but Sam Wilson Americas hope

TFATWS SPOILERSSS
yeah there's definately going to be a season 2, I feel like this series was RIGHTFULLY focused on Sam gaining his new identity as the Captain America, whereas Bucky isn't the Winter Soldier anymore, but he hasn't really earned the title of white wolf (since the Zemo thinf) which is why Sam's title had changed by the end but Buckys hadn't
So yeah I think that season 2 will most likely be more focused on Bucky and maybe Torres becoming the Falcon and the proper villain will most likely be Sharon and or Val+Walker again and I'm HYPED FOR ITTTT
I loved the finale so much
