10 Films to watch this Valentine’s Day if you’re single as hell.
Tumblr media
If anyone or anything is making you feel worthless on the Capitalist Holiday that is Valentine’s Day because you’re single AF, then don’t fret because it means one of two things;
You’re happy enough with yourself to not need anyone else.
You’re allergic to people.
Though mine is both the former and the latter, I can still get down to a good romance movie now and again. Now I’m not talking about those horrendous rom coms that Netflix seems to be churning out every damn minute, but those emotionally invested, earthy and well written dramas that has you ugly crying into your bathrobe for 17 minutes straight (me at the end of Her.). Here is a compiled list of some of the best romance films I’ve seen over the years and how each one doesn’t showcase an abundance of clichés and brands them as “acts of love”.
A Star is Born (2018 or 1953, take your pick)
Tumblr media
I’ve found that both the 1953 version of A Star is Born with Judy Garland and the 2018 newer version to be a perfect and well rounded love story. What makes this love story so fierce is the vulnerabilities and downfall of its characters, which even though there are many sad moments, it perpetuates and strengthens the acts of love shown in the film. Both versions are similar in that they follow a woman who’s rise to fame as a performer becomes overshadowed by her jealous partner, who is also a notable celebrity. In the 2018 version starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, Gaga’s character Ally is helped by a country singer, Jackson Maine to become a successful singer and icon amongst the music industry. As she rises, Jackson falls and the character dynamics and intensity between them is a fitting love story. I was thoroughly bawling at the end and I guarantee you will too as Lady Gaga’s rendition of Love Again was the true scene stealer of the film.
Call me by your name (2017)
Tumblr media
I have an incredible bias towards this film and it has nothing to do with the film’s context or characters or even Timothée Chalamet The reason why I feel so connected to this film and proclaim it as my favourite film of all time is because of when I watched the film. It’s almost like seeing a film about a political event right after it's happened; you have this rush and connection towards something that’s actually affected you in the real world. I had the same feeling with Call me by your name after going through a rough and confusing patch whilst trying to get over someone I thought I truly loved. Turns out I didn’t (thank god) and yet Call me your name was almost like a shoulder to cry on. It’s a film that’s taught me to love and love hard but most importantly, not beat yourself up or try to distinguish the pain felt by true love. If you haven’t been fortunate to catch this beauty of a film, it follows two men, Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and Oliver (Armie Hammer) and their brief relationship in the summer of 1983 in Northern Italy. 17 year old Elio lives with his parents and his father (Michael Stuhlbarg) is a scholar who invites students from outside the country for the summer in hope of passing on his wisdom to them. This is when Oliver arrives, a handsome twenty something American who becomes the infatuation of Elio.
I’ll never forget the first time I heard the monologue that Elio’s father gave his son at the end, explaining to Elio why he shouldn’t feel embarrassed by the pain he felt after loving Oliver:
“We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster, that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty and have less to offer each time we start with someone new. But to make yourself feel nothing so as not to feel anything - what a waste”
That, ladies and gentlemen and all in between, is what love is.
Her. (2013)
Tumblr media
Once again, another film about love that had a profound effect on me because of when I watched it. Her. follows the story of Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) and his search for a story using an A.I to help him write. However, after getting to know this A.I named Samantha (Scarlett Johansson) and hearing the way she adapts and shows emotions, he soon falls in love with it. Some may deem this as rather sad (which it is) but I think it speaks to bigger constructs like internet dating and letting go of people you loved thus diminishing the fantasy and world you created for the two of you. This part of the film got to me a stark way as I felt the pain of letting go of not only a person, but a fantasy, just like Theodore had to do in letting his past partners go. Her. is truly beautiful, with some great production design, cinematography and acting.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Tumblr media
The absolute queen of love stories would be Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, a film about the romance between two women in the late 18th Century. Definitely not a narrative you see every day or one that’s been painted in such a way (pun intended). Marianne (Noémie Merlant) is commissioned to paint the beautiful and stubborn Héloïse (Adèle Haenel) and the portrait is to be gifted to a suitor of Héloïse’s from Milan. But instead of getting the painting done and sending it off, Marianne and Héloïse unexpectedly fall for one another at a subtle and well timed pace that had me gawping at the screen the entire way through. Slow, sensual and moving is Portrait of a Lady on Fire and I would definitely say is one of the best LGBTQ plus films ever made to date.
Broke Back Mountain (2005)
Tumblr media
Ang Lee scooped up a BAFTA, Golden Globe and Oscar for his direction on his adapted screenplay of Brokeback Mountain. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) form a romantic bond after shepherding alone together on the side of a mountain. Once their time herding sheep comes to a close and they return back to their respective lives, it's clear that their bond is stronger than they had anticipated. They live in constant fear of their relationship becoming apparent to those around them, which leaves one of them taking matters into their own hands. A controversial yet extremely successful film of its time, Brokeback Mountain does a fabulous job of showcasing the consequences and despair of love using two of Hollywood’s finest actors.
Carol (2013)
Tumblr media
It’s difficult to fully appreciate LGBTQ plus films set in the past as they mostly focus on the persecution of homosexuals as opposed to the love they wish to express. However, this was pretty accurate of the time and it's only very recently that we have begun to accept one another’s sexualities and genders fully so much that we play these stories out on screen without the persecution part. Carol is a film directed by Todd Haynes and stars Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett. I found them to be an extremely intense pairing whilst they unravelled as their characters on screen. Therese (Rooney Mara) works in the toy department of a department store when one day she lays eyes upon Carol Aird, a beautiful and elegant married woman who becomes the infatuation of Therese. Therese throws all caution to the wind in order to be closer to Carol and because of this and the 1950s society they live in, their relationship is doomed from the beginning. I was in complete awe of the way Carol had been shot and created into this sensual and rich drama set in the 1950s. From the costumes, to the lighting to the acting, everything about Carol held weight to it showcasing the devotion of a truly talented director.
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind (2004)
Tumblr media
Usually I’d pass on a Charlie Kaufman film, seeing as they make no sense, however I felt that it was time I delved into this cult classic starring Kate Winslet, Jim Carrey, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood. It’s a really well made film with a clear and distinct message to it that’s represented in some phenomenal filmmaking techniques. The plot line of this film follows a man trying to erase a past lover and his memories of her get wiped away physically before your eyes on screen. It made me wish that I could do the same with people I’ve liked in the past, but the contradictory of this would be the trauma of eventually ending up with someone you had already met in another life. I haven’t experienced a break up nor felt the pain of one, though I could judge that this film tells that experience really well.
Moonlight (2016)
Tumblr media
Moonlight is one of few films that I would genuinely worship if it were a religion. It's also one of the films that I outwardly shame people for not having seen, as it is truly a masterpiece and film lover’s film. Deep, emotionally connected, colourful, harsh, moving and eye opening, this film takes you on an emotional rollercoaster through the eyes of Chiron and the three stages of his life that have carved out his essence as a human being. Not only that, but he falls in love with another boy at his school, and when he does, he’s hurt rather badly. Literally. Moonlight is the definition of profundity and was awarded the top prize of Best Picture at the 2017 Academy Awards.
Loving (2016)
Tumblr media
When I think of a truthful and honest testament of love, the film Loving comes to mind which is a fitting title for such a delicate yet strong story. The film is based on a true story of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga) being banned from Virginia in the 1950s for choosing to be together. If that ain’t a true sacrifice of love, then I don’t know what is. Choosing someone you love over your own home is an unfathomable thing and certainly shows the strength that this couple had in facing the judgements of others whilst remaining emotionally truthful to themselves.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Tumblr media
The Shape of Water is a strange yet enlightening love story between Eliza, a deaf woman (Sally Hawkins) and a creature being tested on in a laboratory. Awards season went mental for this back in 2018, winning four of the THIRTEEN Oscars it was nominated for. I would categorize it as quite the niche film and wouldn’t usually think that such a film could be garnered with Oscar success. However everyone who worked on this film really pulled out the stops in creating an entire new world and perspective that has many layers to it, as well as an abundance of conflict and dynamics for audiences to lull over. The relationship between Eliza and the feared swamp monster that’s being cruelly tested in the laboratories where she works, is heartfelt and honest, which is strange seeing as Eliza’s virtually in love with a monster. The casting in this was outlandish yet it really worked as all actors in this melded well into the story as their prospective characters. It also has one of the most touching endings to a film I’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media
And there you have it, ten Romance films for you to enjoy this Valentine’s Day. Watch them all at once, or maybe just watch one. Whether you watch it alone or with someone, it doesn’t really matter!
Lots of love

Conversation
Les Amis as iconic lines from Bill Bailey's Qualmpeddler
Enjolras: Every time I see David Cameron standing outside a hospital, I expect to hear horror movie music playing.
Combeferre: That is a correct use of the phrase 'turns out', ladies and gentlemen, not about cosmic certainties! Astrofixtures in the sky which for six months of the year are visible AT THE SAME TIME!
Courfeyrac: I saw a sign advertising 'Cut Price Shark Diving', right, and I don't know about you, but that's not the sort of thing I want to skimp on, really. I want the deluxe package, not the budget version where they lower you down in a wheelie bin with a shopping trolley over your head and some bloke saying 'If the shark comes near you, hit it with this golf putter.'
Jehan: Stand down ma'am, it's just a hippy with a goose.
Feuilly: The next time someone texts you 'lol' immediately text them back 'NELI - Not Even Laughing Inwardly!'
Bahorel: The school hamster's not made it over the weekend - the cat had it - so I've taped four cigarette butts to a scotch egg, and if anyone asks, it was like that when we found it.
Joly: I once spent a whole afternoon trying to figure out how many gummy bears I could fit in a remote-control helicopter without compromising its airborne stability. One, as it turns out.
Bossuet: All the time, the owl was just glaring up at me, like 'Is this what you do for fun in your holidays, Baldy?! Duct-tape up owls and drive them around in the woods?! What are you doing next year, gaffering up a gazelle and chucking it down a waterslide?!"
Grantaire: But my favourite painting by William Turner, or 'Old Smudger' as he was known to his friends, has to be 'The Fighting Temeraire' - or as I call it, 'Chantelle's Paradox'.
Marius: Now. There is not a phrasebook in the world that can translate 'you hold the talons with the oven glove, and I'll cut the tape off with the nail scissors'.
Cosette: Do you ever wonder if Dominico Alberti is just up there in heaven, thinking to himself, "You owe me, Mozart, you slag!"
Éponine: *death metal screaming in a West Country accent* RIPPED... APART... BY BADGERS!!!!
Musichetta: He's got a face like a magic pebble. I reckon if you rubbed his forehead glitter would come out of his ears.
Gavroche: *pretending to be talking to a tiny Nick Clegg* What's that, tiny Cleggy-Weggy? *squeak squeak squeak* You don't think people are taking you seriously? *squeak squeak squeak* And this depiction of you isn't exactly helping? *squeak* Oh, I'm so sorry! *stands on the imaginary tiny Nick Clegg*

♣️American Idiot - An American Classic ♣️
Tumblr media
I’ve always been in awe of Green Day. Ever since I was a little kid. To, for a moment, indulge in a little harmless fanboy-ing, there was something about the trio of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool that spoke to me on a damn near ancestral level. I remember that September morning in 2004 when my mother, the usual catalyst for my musical obsessions, came into my bedroom with an enormous Cheshire Cat grin on her face.
“It’s out, Wills”.
I immediately knew what she meant. We’d been following news and reviews feverishly. Its not very often your favourite band drops a new album. Honestly when she whipped out that ass kicking album outwork, I knew exactly what the rest of our day would entail. We sat down, hit play and pricked up our ears.
God, I’ll never forget hearing the opening of the albums title track roar out over our shitty little speakers. Matter of fact I’ll never forget the one after that, or the one after that. You know what let’s break down what was racing through my 6 year old head, a sort of subliminal track by track commentary, if you will. Strap in.
American Idiot was loud, proud, and unlike anything else I’d ever heard. It’s the perfect opening to Green Day’s opus. Having grown up and learned all about the state of the nation when the album dropped has only skyrocketed my adoration for the title track. If being an American Idiot is this cool, count me in. Nuff said.
Jesus Of Suburbia was nine minutes long. NINE FUCKING MINUTES LONG. Safe to say 6 year old Will had never heard anything quite as bombastic before, but he certainly wasn’t using words like bombastic back then. Truthfully in my young eyes and ears it was all noise, beautiful noise.
The magic didn’t stop there, oh god it was just getting started. Next on the now infamous track list was Holiday with that incredible segway into Boulevard of Broken Dreams. You all know the one. Wuh wuh wuh wuh. It was, and forever will be an immediate standout, the pain in Billie Joe’s voice, the tenacity of the lyrics, the desperately lonely quality the whole song punches you in the face with. 6 year old Will certainly felt it then, and almost 21 year old Will feels it still. Incredible stuff, a true classic.
Whats next? Oh yes, more face shredding glory. The band’s tour de force continues with three more sandwiched two track eargasms. Are We the Waiting/St Jimmy, Give Me Novicaine/She’s A Rebel and Extraordinary Girl/Letterbomb. Jesus Christ Green Day please give my fragile heart a break. All three are iconic, but for entirely different, but equally punk rock reasons. Okay okay, so these three are often the overlooked scorned middle children from AI, but there’s a sophistication to them, and they delve into deeply important, far reaching and frankly terrifying subject matter. Safe to say young impressionable Will wasn’t ready for the drug abusing, hard drinking lyricism, or the real shit, if you will. But what a ride the three offerings provided, and of course continue to provide. They are quite simply untouchable. Each is a deep dive into brutal and painful stuff, but Armstrong Dirnt and Cool execute it so beautifully its as if Van Gogh painted a murder scene.
Also side note, heed my glowing review and listen to this album from start to finish, no breaks, no distractions, just you and the music. I reckon you will feel ALL the feelings. Also, the transition between Extraordinary Girl and Letterbomb. That will be all.
Speaking of feeling all the feelings, it’s about to get emotional (if it wasn’t already, of course it was, hold it together). The final three tracks begin with the eye of the emotional hurricane. Ladies and Gentlemen, Wake Me Up When September Ends. Let’s apply some context, the album was released in September 2004, three years almost to the day after America lost a part of herself, probably forever. Armstrong also lost his father during this period, meaning he and America both had a lot of healing to do. Wake Me Up is that healing, it’s cathartic, raw, honest and exhilarating. Green Day manage to create something undeniably beautiful out of the ugliest of moments. 10/10.
Okay, once you’ve stopped crying let’s get back to it. Still with me? Awesome. Home stretch. After Holiday and Boulevard of Broken Dreams who’d have thought Green Day had the idea of whacking in another nine minute odyssey, but here we are. Presenting Homecoming for your consideration. Another song that’s really 7 or 8 songs in one (alright lads no need to overachieve), the song is as balls to the wall ‘we don’t give a fuck’ as they come. It dropkicks the solemn mood established by Wake Me Up and drags the listener kicking and screaming into an energetic race to the finish line
The penultimate song, in an album full of dark horses is yet another secret weapon. It’s presented in nine equally perfect movements. We all still know the words, rock and roll will never die, and in my humble, oh so humble opinion, it’s largely because of this record, it certainly changed the face of Green Day as a band, and Rock Opera as a genre. Frankly, dear reader, you can’t change my mind. The album closes with the sombre Whatshername, an anthem for unrequited love and growing up, but frankly, with this album, if growing up means leaving things behind, it’s never gonna happen with this record. It’s quite frankly something else. I’ll leave you now to go and experience everything I’ve not shut up about. Trust me, just do it. Tell me I’m wrong.

Having your Birthday is usually a fun thing to celebrate, for sure when you are in the hottest young band since the days of the Beatniks and have already toured with Greta van Fleet and The Struts! Chris Harding celebrated his very Birthday at the iconic Troubadour with a massive Rock n Roll Party almost all night and the fantastic blues-rock import directly from Liverpool in form of The Jupiter Blues. The stage was set for another legendary gig to remember in London’s most long-standing and unique coffee house. If you don’t believe me come to their next gig and see for yourself and you will agree with me that the next generation will ask “Amazing!! You were at the Troubadour when The Second Sons had their residency there and played with The Jupiter Blues! Now I am really jealous!!” So its cold, it’s dark and rush hour in the squeeze Tubes and on the streets in Earl’s Court. What better thing you can think of as heading down to The Troubadour, having a  hot and sweet coffee before making your way down to see a fantastic show.  As I went down the stairs the soundcheck was already done and I was ready for take-off. And what a flight that was trough Blues and Rock ‘n Roll, I didn’t even had time to sip on my drink.
Part One: The Jupiter Blues
The support of the evening for The Second Sons have been The Jupiter Blues, a Blues-Rock Import straight from the streets of Liverpool onto our little stage at the Troubadour. They for sure wouldn’t leave anyone behind! If you are in for rocky blues with a serious sloppy groove you do have to see them immediately! “I’m goin down” was the start of a set full of  Blues that didn’t lose anything of its mood with a serious rhythm section from Rick Davies and Ross Brown and the guitar riffs from Chris Mitchell with Dale  Orenda on lead vocals. With the first notes blasted through the speakers of “Stingin” the bug had done it’s work already. So if you can only hear Blues and Rock the rest of your live, you know why. “Six-foot bulldog” was next on the list and it is needless to mention that neither I nor my audience colleagues need a doggy to make us stay for the set. What I really enjoyed was the interaction, fooling around and fun in playing together and the lively rhythm that it creates in your stomach.  All the songs were infected with this combination of serious Blues themes and fun playing guitar chords and grooving rhythm section that made everything easy going like a New Orleans street parade. Aretha’s “Chain of fools” was a great and I am sure pleasing tribute to the Queen of Soul which would have granted her approval. It is true to say we all are fools sometimes, but it is not a shame to fall into the trap of these fab guys from Liverpool!
“Sweet little angle” is one of these musical sounds that you could easily place somewhere into a juke joint into the Mississippi Delta. I see a sunny shack in the middle of nowhere. The song sneaks through the windows and the open door and people come from work as the sun is already starting to set down. They come to have a drink, dance around and having fun. It is not too fare away for me that the same music is sneaking through the roof and into the streets of Earls Court making the people who come passing bye curious to see what the heck is going on in the Troubadour again to listen, dance and forget the working day.
“Dead on the street” is truly rising your temperature with the moving-your-butt guitar and drum rhythm they start with. When Dale joins in on the vocals it goes done your spine like honey. “While the sun is on your side” you should celebrate your luck as long as it goes and we were very lucky to have a few more songs with this very talented band. So “Pumped full of sugar” everyone was caught by their spell and soon to follow was the last song of their set with “Bullfrog Blues”.
Once again, the blues is very alive and thriving with young bands and a young open and an extremely inquisitive audience who is curious to explore all the catchy tunes, gut-wrenching voices and sounds from Robert Johnson and Ma Rainey to today’s young blues bands.  Having heard Jupiter Blues and all the other young Blues Bands I am sure the seed is growing to a very big tree.
Part Two: The Second Sons
“Ladies and Gentlemen… The Second Sons don’t play Rock ‘n Roll. They are Rock ‘n Roll!” The introduction into the evening was simple and clear. Many who have seen them play will agree with this statement and if you have seen them once… you are already craving for the next gig. It is like a full house guarantee!  You only have to take a look at the Rhythm section in form of Alessandro Cinelli and George Price and the sheer fun with whom they enjoy it to spread the rhythm bug around you to make everyone move. I love bands with a serious guitar section and The Second Sons have two excellent guitarists with Chris Harding and Marco Cinelli. It is for me always astonishing to see how easy it looks when they fill the air with belly pleasing jiving and rocking tunes. I have to admit I cannot play any cord on any guitar what so ever. It looks so easy to me when they play their solos. I have the feeling they shake it out of their left arm. The lead vocalist and lead harpist is none other than Nick Harding and, only to speak for me, he is the natural born frontman who gets everyone involved in whatever is going on. Together they form a not to underestimate force of Rock ‘n Roll energy.
And that’s how it started:  With a royal flush on Stage in the packed West London venue to be that night.  With directly the first number Chris, Nick, George, Marco and Alessandro didn’t left any questions about it! “Light it up” kicks you out of your work shoes into your rocking boots! Truly they get “The best out of you” just by doing what they love,  playing hot Rock ‘n Roll music and drowning everyone into a mix of let-lose-feet-stomping, jumping-to-the-roof, twisting-the-day-away mood you just can’t escape.  After the “Immigration Blues” came “Eyes for You” which is always a melodic highlight that warms your heart. We were definitely not ”Sick of it all” but just warming up for a LOVE spreading “What you need is Love” and the relieving statement “Hearts don’t break around here”. That’s why we are there, aren’t we?  With “Ain’t it a shame “ came one of my favourite songs and it’s blistering mix of a catchy melody that lies in your ear forever and tempts you to sing it where you go plus Nick’s engaging presence of the caring rock n roll frontman who really wants EVERYONE to join in the chorus. “I want you” and again the band proofed that they are more than able to write catchy tunes with the potential for a chat in the London Underground when somebody can’t help themselves and just have to hum the melody which moved into his mind.  It is very easy to “Lend a hand” and support them because you rock out and have for sure a great night at one of London’s great music venues which are the backbone of London Music Nightlife and with a major talent on the British Music scene right now.  Chris, Nick, George, Marco and Alessandro are definitely THE “Talk of the town “and I think we all can be sure that the guys have a lot  “Down the line” to please their fans up and down the Country and beyond. You can’t be to old or too young! This evening there were people from 10 to 70+ and all were having a fun Rock n Roll night out together. So come and see them when they are next time in your area. The evening finished with “Can’t you see” as their signature song where Nick thanks the audience for coming along and rocking out.  “We are the Second Sons” and then off you go with the hypnotic rhythm that makes you jumping and stomping that the roof shakes, because you know soon it’ll have been a fantastic gig. But before the very end, they pleased us with some treats.  There are two songs that give me a kick when I am tired and can’t keep my eyes open and they are “Bye Bye Johnny”, the energising tribute to Chuck Berry and the last song of the evening and tribute to Tina in form of “Proud Mary”. I can truly say I had very sleepy eyes at my workplace the next day.

If you thought I’d suffer from heat deprivation in London’s chilly Autumn after a year spent in the sun-drenched Coogee Beach, you are mistaken. I am making the most of what the UK Capital has to offer and damn, there’s no shortage of events on this side of the pond. Here’s a round-up of events you need to look out for this Autumn.
October
Harry Potter, A History of Magic Exhibition at The British Library – from October 20
As a Potterhead and a fan of any British Library exhibition to this date, A History of Magic Seems unmissable: rare books, manuscripts and magical objects from the British Library’s collection, showcasing the folklore and magic at the heart of the Harry Potter saga.
The exhibit celebrates the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – feel old yet?
Blade Hairclub Halloween Hairclubbing Night – Saturday 28 October
Considering how appalling my blow-dry skills are, booking in with a friend to get the Halloween look at Blade Hairclub in Soho sounds like the right way to kick off my Halloween weekend.
To get the party started, Blade will be playing tunes from classics such as Beetlejuice, Nightmare before Christmas and Screaming Jay Hawkins. iPads are also positioned at each station enabling scary film fanatics to immerse themselves in some of the best horror films that Netflix can provide, including It Follows, Babadook, Hush and Paranormal Activity.
But no Hairclubbing sesh is complete without cocktails, which will be Halloween-themed for the occasion:
Poisoned Apple – VSOP Calvados, Elderflower Liqueur, fresh pressed apple, apple juice, lemon juice, Abbott’s Bitters;
Devil’s Blade – Rittenhouse Rye, Campari, Ancho Reyes Red Chile Liqueur, Orange bitters;
The Pumpkin King – Organic Vodka, Maple Syrup, Pumpkin Puree, Vanilla, Black Walnut bitters.
All Hallow’s Eve by Lamplight at the Tower Hamlets Cemetery – Saturday 28 October
This year, I’ve decided I’m going to have at least one DYI Halloween night and instead of going to fancy events in very little clothing, I will actually do something spooky. Enter Cemetery Club’s lamp-lit tour of the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, set to celebrate the lives of the quarter of a million people buried there, from heroes to villains, locals and mavericks. The tour will be an occasion to explore the Victorian customs associated with Hallowmas, and taste authentic Soul Cakes, made from a recipe from the time of old Queen Vic herself.
Tours on Saturday 28 and Tuesday 31st, either at 6:30 or 8 PM;
Tickets £12/£10.
U SUCK Halloween Special at The Old Blue Last – Saturday 28 October
My DYI night will be followed by by a dance and a sing-along to the best break-up bangerZZZ and pop kiss-offs at The Old Blue Last. It’s on the same night as the Cemetery Tour so I might end up wearing at least something Halloweeny. Whether you’ve been dumped by a satanic being (haven’t we all), ghosted by a moron or just wanna have some fun, this looks like the place.
Saturday October 28th, 10pm-4am;
Fancy dress strongly encouraged;
FREE all night long.
Halloween Movie Ball at The Grand, Clapham  – Saturday 28 October

For all of you South Londoners out there, The Grand in Clapham will throw a part paying homage to the finest and freakiest Horror Movies of all time to the sound of party favourites. The event includes photo booths, make-overs, balloon drops, prizes for the best dressed and more confetti than you can think of. Fancy dress: compulsory.
Eat Blood-Injected Charcoal Balls at Old Street Station
There’s no Halloween without creepy food options but this year I wanted to go a bit more left-field than your average pumpkin stuff… so why not try charcoal activated cheese balls filled with “spicy blood”?
Picture by Dona Rita
On Tuesday 31st October, Brazilian Chef Rita will make a a special batch of Brazilian cheese balls Halloween set to taste like a “melted-cheese inferno”. Brazilian Cheese Balls are the go-to snack in Latin America. They’re gluten-free, made with Cassava and cheese and are crunchy outside and cloud-like inside.
This time however, Chef Rita will be blending this dark and detoxifying twist with the original recipe, the cheese balls will be served with a Syringe, filled with your choice of sweet or spicy blood (don’t worry, it’s only jam and Sriracha sauce). You can inject the balls with blood, spill it all over for a gory look or pour it in your mouth as Halloween make up. The choice is yours.
The pop-up is near the stall in front of the ticket hall at Old Street Underground Station;
A portion of 6 blood-injected charcoal balls costs £5;
Opening times: 7.30am to 7pm, open until late on Halloween;
You can try a less devilish version until the 26th of November, the day the pop-up closes.
Junkyard Golf Club Day of the Dead with El Jimador – Tuesday 31 October
Right, so the 31st is a Tuesday which sucks a bit, but at least Junkyard Golf Club in Brick Lane is teaming up with el Jimador to transform its crazy golf labyrinth into a Day of the Dead scare fiesta complete with actors, magicians and circus performers, cocktails and, well… golf. A round is just £9.50 including booking fee which is great if, like me, you are going just for shits and giggles and plan to be kicked out due to how appalling your golfing skills are.

Performers on the line up include jugglers, unicyclists, LED hoopers and The Magic Ball Man, who caused a storm last year with a hypnotic video that racked up over 22 million views on Facebook.
Junkyard Golf London at The Old Truman Brewery, from 7 to 10 PM;
Tickets available here.

Skylight Launches Its Rooftop Skating and Fondue Nights in Tobacco Dock – Thursday 2 November
Ever since it launched in the summer, news about Skylight has been giving me a huge FOMO. I thought I’d have to wait until Summer to check it out, but luckily, Tobacco Dock’s rooftop is relaunching as a top Winter destination on Thursday 2 November, complete with seasonal drinks, fondue,  street food AND London’s first rooftop ice rink.
Picture By Skylight
A £10 skating ticket gets you 45 on the ice rink, while you can play ice hockey for £3. The cheese fondue will start at £14.95 per person with tables available to book in advance and ladies and gentlemen, Skylight will also offer delicious chocolate fondue at £9.95 per person.
Who am I kidding, this is where I break my leg. I know this. Cocktails and ice skating will never be a good match for someone as clumsy as I am, but with its unobstructed views of some of London’s most iconic buildings, Skylight is one of those venues you just can’t miss out on.
Thursday & Friday 5pm – 11pm;
Saturday & Sunday – 12pm – 11pm.
Christmess in Southwark, Launching on 15 November
We all know talking about Christmas is forbidden before December first, so you will excuse me for writing about Christmess instead, run by Slap Ya Papa and Marbles & Ware.
Picture by: Christmess
Launching on 15th November for a six-week run, Christmess is set in Victorian London – and at The Hunter Penrose to be precise, a barely touched warehouse in the heart of Borough Market.
The immersive event includes live entertainment brought to you by Santa’s little helpers, green fairies, St Nicholas and all the Christmas peepz with a twist. Food is left in the capable hands of Slap Ya Papa, who will cook up a 12-dish soulful lunch or dinner made of platters of Cajun roasted turkey and candied yams.
Open throughout the day, the downstairs area will be a workshop filled with creations by independent makers. Craftspeople from across the capital will be making and selling an abundant trove of stocking fillers and makers will also be offering present making classes such as a Floral Wreath weaving and Beeswax candle making.
Tickets: £55 per person;
Feasts: Wednesday – Sunday, 6.30pm – 11.30pm.
Museum of Witchcraft Opening – 2 November
Cornwall’s most magical Museum comes to London with an exhibition made of scary photographs of haunted objects from The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic by Sara Hannant and Simon Costin. I’m looking forward to seeing all the magical objects on display, including a Witch Mirror, a waxen curse poppet, spells and charms and items from a Black Magicians altar.
The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic has the largest and most remarkable collection of witchcraft-related objects and books in the world, focusing on this misunderstood aspect of British folk culture.
The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art & Natural History
November 3rd 2017 – 28th Febuary 2018.
Jazz Before Jazz Was Jazz, Two Temple Place – Sunday 12 November
Arts education charity The Arts Society and my favourite London band, Kansas Smitty’s, are teaming up to tell the story of the way jazz became Jazz, starting from the slave songs of American plantations, African polyrhythms, and the European classical tradition.
Made of talks, interactive workshops, Smitty’s signature juleps, Deep South inspired street food and performances by the Kansas Smitty’s House Band, this event comes as a prequel to The Age of Jazz, an exhibition produced by The Arts Society and the Bulldog Trust, which opens at Two Temple Place in January 2018. The exhibition will kick off a year of celebrations for The Arts Society which marks its 50th anniversary next year.
Autumn Events To Watch Out For If you thought I'd suffer from heat deprivation in London's chilly Autumn after a year spent in the sun-drenched Coogee Beach, you are mistaken.

Autumn/Winter Jewellery Trends 2017/18
[et_pb_section bb_built="1"][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type="4_4"][et_pb_text _builder_version="3.0.76" background_layout="light" border_style="solid"]
Hottest Jewellery Trends For Autumn/Winter 2017
"If you’ve every looked at jewellery from the runway and thought, “I could never wear or pull that off!” You would be right.   Most fashion designers work with talented jewellers to create pieces that are purposely and imaginatively over-the-top to accentuate their fashion message for the season.   These are the styles that influence trends and inspire jewellers to create toned down versions of the looks—the size and weight of, say, earrings that have been carefully proportioned not to drag down your lobes, or necklaces that won’t put you into traction.   The Autumn/Winter 2017/18 runway shows surprised and delighted with certain jewels that you could wear exactly as they appeared on the runway.   Quite a number of these styles have been around for seasons, such as the now ubiquitous ear climbers and ear cuffs as well as the charm of talisman necklaces.   But there are also new renditions of ‘70s arm cuffs, hoops and fringe earrings and necklaces."
See more from original source, here...     Below are some of the main trends from the different fashion shows around the world...
  "THICK HOOPS   Our delicate earrings are taking a back seat this season to make way for their sturdier counterpart: the thick gold hoop.   Hailing back to the late '80s and early '90s with the likes of hip-hop royalty (oh, heyyy, Sade), these bigger, more substantial versions feel like the perfect, everyday throwback."

    "STATEMENT RINGS   Luckily, delicate gold bands are still going strong, but this new crop of finger bling adds some old-school flair.   Think: over size stones and thick metal bands that grab attention all by themselves—or while layered in with your favourite thread-like ones."

    "SNAKES   All hail the explosion of serpentine motifs (we’re lookin’ at you, Gucci) that have slithered their way into our closets and now our jewellery chest, too.   Winding ear cuffs and coiled rings make this reptilian trend as playful as it is Gothic, and we’re seriously on board."
image credit
    "SIGNET RINGS   These round-faced rings were originally used as seals in ancient Egypt, then status symbols in the 19th century with initials or family crests.   Now, the monogram is back, and we love the idea of it on a tiny gold pinky ring, but the bands come in all shapes and sizes to suit whatever mood you’re in."

    "BRIGHT METALS   Don’t get us wrong: We love an understated pair of studs as much as the next gal.   But if fashion week gave us any indication of fall trends, it’s that you’ve got to go bold or go home. Case in point: super-reflective sheet metal—whether silver, gold, hammered, mirrored or iridescent—draws all the light toward you for an “I’ve arrived” moment at every angle."

    "CRYSTALS   If Zendaya can rock disco-like chandelier earrings, so can you.   This party-girl staple isn’t just for the dance floor (though it’ll definitely play well there, too). Pair your rhinestone mesh and crystal-studded danglers with graphic tees and over size blazers for an edgy twist on the classic '80s trend."

    And if those aren't enough to keep you going, here's some more Autumn Jewellery trends to help you get ahead in the style stakes this Winter...
9 More Autumn Jewellery Styles
    1.) Asymmetrical Earrings
image credit
  Bring on the queer and the unique jewellery because one of the most trendy pieces this fall includes something that can be way out of the comfort zone of some people.   Yes, they're what we call the asymmetrical earrings.   It seems that fashion nowadays has its take on seeing beauty out of the not-so-ordinary. Fall is all about layering, so I guess this jewellery style will go perfectly with the layering trends come the Autumn season.   Layered jackets and asymmetric details do provide such a stunning and magnetic contrast to each other. We can't wait to see this style conquer fashion scenes.
2.) Layered Pearls
image credit
  They may be considered a prime classic jewellery, but there's no denying here that whatever the season, pearls don't ever get missed on the trend.   I mean, who can ignore the grand beauty that can only be given by pearls alone?   A time of layered clothes deserves a complement of layered jewellery that is why one of the jewellery trends for fall include layered pearl necklaces.   Layering pearls always create a regal dimension look: classy, sophisticated, and downright high-fashion.   So bring out the pearls out of your box; it's time for them to make an appearance soon!
3.) Single Earrings
image credit
  No, this is not just a case of "Oh my gosh, did she lose the other pair of her earrings?"   It turns out, she has not, and she has just found a trend in jewellery that is so unique: donning single earrings. Now, this popular way of wearing earrings started in the runways of New York during its fashion week.   It got its seal of approval when models from the Paris runways started wearing them to their shows, too.   The best thing about this, there are no rules. Whether you love hoop, statement, diamond stud, or dangling earrings, the best way to wear them now is on their own.
4.) Punk Jewellery
image credit
  Punk's not dead, y'all; it's not dead. In fact, it has made an appearance in some of the most prestigious fashion shows in the New York and Paris Fashion week!   Sterling silver pieces with distinct, iconic details are one of the must haves for the upcoming fall fashion. This reminds me of a throwback to the 90's grunge phase.   This is just one of the reasons why the 90's era is considered a big influence in the world of fashion.   If you feel like rocking out this look, time to bring out those sterling silver, black, and bronze jewellery pieces and layer them together!
5.) Raw Stones
image credit
  By themselves, gemstone jewellery is a huge hit to many. They're lovely, they're colourful, they complement many looks, and they're majestic.   But, make them raw and you get a different kind of beauty.   Raw stones jewellery pieces are a huge hit in the fashion scene today because they offer such a unique touch to any fashion item that you wear.   Either you wear them as rings, necklace, or bangles, these raw stones jewellery are sure to make a statement.   Just proves that you don't need to get all polished to be able to achieve such breathtaking beauty.
6.) Bangles over Sleeves
image credit
  Brace yourselves, the cold seasons are coming.   But, this does not mean that our jewellery game won't be as strong just because we will be wearing our sweaters and jackets.   All thanks to the gods of fashion, we can still look just as chic even though we are totally wrapped in layers of clothing.   Yes, ladies and gentlemen, a new fashion trend today is called "bangles-over-sleeves" where bangles are placed on wrists over a piece of clothing.   This trend has caught so many eyes when it first made its way to the red carpet.   So long, jewellery troubles during the cold months!
7.) Across-ear earrings
image credit
  Across-ear earrings, also known as ear cuffs, are now domineering the world of earrings since they first appeared on the runway.   Celebrities like Emma Watson could not resist getting hooked to such jewellery trend when she stepped out on the red carpet looking A+ per usual.   We love this jewellery as it bridges the line between sophistication and looking edgy.   Across-ear earrings look so good when they're made out of crystals, gems, and studs.   If you're looking for a statement to go with your staple little black dress for the Autumn, then this style of earring should be a top pick for you!
8.) Statement Necklace
image credit
  You got your clothes-to-layer ready, a bold lipstick, and some stunning pair of heels, but you feel that there's still something that is missing. What could it be?   Yes, you got it right, you forgot your statement necklace! Indeed, a statement necklace is a staple accessory for the fall. It's chic but it sure is loud and perfect as an exclamation point for all the clothes you have layered on.   The love for statement necklaces doesn't just stop on the streets; even the people in the runway give importance to this stunning piece of accessory.   If you will be making a statement, make it beautiful!
9.) Layered Necklace
image credit
  The love for layered necklace don't just end during the summer, it continues up to Autumn!   If you are looking for a conventional, easy, and versatile jewellery trend, layered necklaces are the ones you should look out for.   They're chic and they're very easy to do. Just throw in some gold chain necklaces and you're good to go.   Also, they go well with almost every outfit! There's a reason why this look is still not going out of the market. Surely we will see more of this from the fall time to the Coachella days!
  See more from original source, here...   See our guide to layering necklaces, here...   These Autumn Jewellery trends are the big must-haves for everyone who wants to own the cold seasons with their bling.   If you're still on the look out for amazing and unique pieces of jewellery that you can use after the Winter months, check out A K Campbell's collection of long chain necklaces, statement rings, necklaces, earrings and more.   See you soon!
