a/n: OMG UR REQUEST it’s so creative!! Thanks for saying u like my writing! Also I feel like this was so bad after reading this like this is my first au (?) fic so i have no idea how good this will turn out but this request is rlly rlly cool. Also ofc u can be 🌈 anon!

Nagisa rests his arms and head on the rock facing the bustling village. Observing the many merchants carry large boxes of produce to sell. However, the main reason why he was there was to see a certain human, more specifically a fisher, he was ever curious to know more about them.

Today was special, he was going to finally get to know more about this fisher. So, at the crack of dawn, Nagisa swam to the shallow waters near the shore.

Upon your arrival, he stuck his head slightly out of the water, mumbling a little hello.

“HUH??” you shriek, taking a double take. A man in the water? Looking closer, you saw the shimmering tail that flapped slowly in the water. So a merman…

Noticing your alarm, he raised one of his arms and attempted to explain himself. “You see, I recently came to the surface of the water to observe human behaviours. And you seem approachable (and rlly pretty)”.

Slightly calming down after hearing his explanation, you asked “what’s your name? What do you want to know, I’ll try my best to answer” sitting down on one of rocks along the shoreline.

Nagisa thought hard for a conversation topic, playing with the ends of his long, silvery hair. Finally, he answered “my name is Nagisa Ran, and you can start by telling me… what do humans do at that village over there?” He was pointing at the crowds of people amongst the many stalls.

“Oh! That’s the wet market, many people go there to buy food and today is Sunday, so it’s especially busy today!” Trying your best to explain. Now you were curious, who was this merman, you didn’t even know they existed until today!

You asked him about himself and he replied “oh there isn’t much to know, in fact its quite boring down there in the ocean. The only thing interesting is hearing the silly squabbles between my friends.”

Giggling, you continued to ask more questions and vice versa. The conversation continued on, nevermind that it wasn’t on the topic of mermaids or humans, until you heard the incoming footsteps from the village. Other fishers were coming!

You quickly ended the conversation and whispered in his ear “until tomorrow, I’ll meet you here, same timing”.

He nodded and swiftly ducked down back under the surface of the water. On the way down deeper into the sea, he anticipated the next meeting, not even noticing the light dust of pink on his cheeks. Who knows why he left the surface knowing more about you than humans in general.

Everyday, he returns with small little trinkets. Usually a little sea shell, shimmering with it magnificent colours or a rock that he found at the bottom of the ocean.

You bring him little snacks from the wet market! “So you’re telling me that this packet of seaweed biscuits is the same as this slimy, wet thing?” “Yup!”

He talks about his friends a lot. U practically know everything about them, without having to meet them. About the a green haired, bright and social Hiyori, the ever polite Jun and the incredibly sly Ibara. Little do you know, he talks a lot about you to them too!

Please get this man a comb. The first time you wanted to comb his hair, he gave you a literal fork that was thrown into the ocean. Or if you prefer you could just use your fingers?

Soon the questions that he asks you start to morph into “do you think my tail looks good today?” “Do you like anyone from the village?” It’s quite obvious he caught a crush.

“ would you be opposed to loving someone? Like romantically?” He asks out of the blue. You shake your head at his question.

Hesitating slightly, “how about me?” To be honest, you were stumped when he asked that question. You both knew a long time ago, that this need to have a daily talk could no longer hide under the guise of “curiosity to know about human behaviours”.

Plastering a kiss on his wet forehead, you muttered, “I’m not opposed to it. But for now, I’ll come daily to see you and I hope you will too!”

HIIII psd anon i think i’ve got it figured out?? i deleted all my gradient maps and that mostly fixed it but i’ll try doing the thing u suggested,, if i can figure out how LOL thank you for your help!!

HIII im glad u got some brightness back so this is for the future if u keep wanting to use gradient maps (theyre cool and let you do cool stuff imo, if you use them right? the gradient map from Panera looks insane but it makes mafuyu Green so thats cool)

levels also helps even if ur not relying on gradient maps, thats how i got erich from having these rlly dire shadows to looking abit less like i was flash banging him with a stage light

i put the actual tut under cut bc its long um lol anyways mr /luvrevue himself taught me this trick so i'll pass it on to you since dark PSDs can be a real pain sometimes :clap:

i'm using one of /cutesiplushi's PSDs for this bc this psd has like 5 gradient maps and makes the example img crazy dark. peek.

first im going to open everything and remove any thresh hold layers i'm not a fan of. still too rich imo. the original is pastel so now i can bring levels into things to bring some of that pastel/lightness back

see the boxes labled "sample from image" ? You select a box then select a colour you want to have a certain property relavtive to the other colours...

black -> darkest in the img grey -> mid tone for the img white -> lightest colour in the img

i selected the grey box and selected part of fyo's hair, and the image brightened up abit!

from here i would increase the contrast and lower the saturation but thats be i have an insane style that loves HAZE and GREY TONES !!! once the brightness is corrected u can go crazy, i hope this helps abit :thumbsup:

the same exact thing can be done in curves but the PSD makes my chromebook lag like CRAZY so i dont like messing w curves when im lagging um lol experiment and throw random shit at the wall tbh

hello 🌼🌼 thank u for the compliments, that means a lot ahah!! and yeah sure, i’ve had this ask for about a week and i was making a taeyong gifset so i’ve started from right where the gif is unsharpened and uncoloured to it being finished!!

this is going to be a very long tutorial so like it’s under the keep reading, i hope this helps!

my sharpening and colouring process (long tutorial)

above is a screenshot of the original gif, it’s not coloured nor sharpened! now first i want to start the colouring, if u look at the colours that catch ur eye first, it’s the black of taeyong’s jacket, the yellow undertones of skin and the pale grey background

there’s no point in me trying to play with the levels for a colour like green because there isn’t any green to work with here

i always increase the neutrals first, to me, it highlights the shadows on a person’s face!

the black being increased highlights taeyong’s jacket and it gives the gif more depth

here’s something u need to be careful about, i like my gifs to be more reddish hued as it highlights the lips

but if u increase the red too much, it gives the person a very pinkish hue w their skin tone and that is a natural trait found in european / caucasian ethnicities as compared to east asian (if ur giffing kpop for example)

we’re not trying to change their skin tone, make it too red and it can be considered close to white washing, some say its a stretch but i just never go there, once again, we’re not trying to change their skin tone!

so afterwards i always balance it out a bit w yellow as u can see below

now the next thing i do is optional really depending on your scene that ur giffing! the background behind taeyong is more of a pale grey but i want it to stand out more so i increase the white

now that i’ve done that, let’s look at our gif so far!!

if u compare that to the first screenshot, there’s a noticeable difference, however i like my gifs to be slightly unique in their colouring so this is more of my colouring style and how i achieve it, if u send an ask i’d be happy to upload the psd i use!

i first change the brightness and contrast because obviously, these are important factors in colouring!

now this is where things get interesting, the next few steps might look weird but it all comes together :))

these are the settings i use and i mostly achieve these by playing around with the adjustment settings but now i end up w this:

definitely not close to our final product, but hold on!!

i mix around the levels and the saturation a bit and then i end up w this:

this is about as freaky as it’ll get, now it’s slowly gonna come back to normal

photo filters saved the day!! then i shifted the black a bit higher because i felt taeyong’s jacket didn’t rlly pop!

i changed the midtones a bit and i wanted to shift the spectrum more to magenta!

now that overwhelming cyan look is gone!! it’s more close to how i prefer my gifs to be

i want the gif to be a bit darker but i don’t want to fully plunge the gif into eternal darkness w the lightness setting

now it’s darker and i’m quite happy w it, sometimes i’d leave the colouring at that but let’s go a few steps further :))

it has a very high contrast and some ppl don’t prefer that so i applied the above setting and now:

that’s the final colouring finished and i’m quite happy w it and now it’s time to sharpen!

these are the sharpening settings i use about 90% of the time, i apply this smart sharpening and then a blur, of course this is all adjustable and up to u!

sometimes i might not like the effect of the smart sharpening and i adore this action by @bt21net which u can find here, i use the WITH LUV sharpener a lot!!

now this is a side by side comparison of gifs w no sharpening vs smart sharpening and the WITH LUV sharpener!

smth very important to keep in mind is that it depends on the quality of the video file! this was the highest quality i could find of nct 127′s 2019 comeback performance but check out this small gif i made to show the sharpening difference on a higher quality video (with the BT21 sharpener)

i had the resize the gif but u can def see the difference!!
