I think people overestimate how feminist team black is. If someone brings up how Baela should be the heir to Driftmark, it's always "she would've been Queen if not for the Greens!", ignoring that 1, she would be Queen consort, not a Queen in her own right, and 2 she has a legitimate claim in her own right to Driftmark. Team Black's goal is to crown Rhaenyra, but Rhaenyra becoming Queen isn't a win for feminism because it does nothing to dismantle the rest of the patriarchal system that exists in Westeros. From what we've gotten so far, it reads that Rhaenyra wants to be the exception and not the rule. Rhaenyra has made a lot of bad political decisions, which means she can't acknowledge Baela's claim because it would weaken her own claim (blatantly admitting her eldest sons are illegitimate would not end well for her to say the least). So she betrothes Jace and Luke to Baela and Rhaena to kind of atone for that, like as a consolation prize Baela will be Queen and Rhaena will be lady of Driftmark, neither of them would hold either title in their own right. It's good matches because the kids like each other and will treat each other well, but it's not a feminist win or a feministic liberation. It's usurpation, usurpation that takes place because Rhaenyra has to do damage control after having illegitimate children and after a serious of bad political decisions (both hers and her fathers, Viserys is the arbiter of this entire mess). To me, Rhaenyra is very reminiscent of Mary Queen of Scots, I can see a lot of elements drawn from Mary's history in Rhaenyra's story and character, down to their sons eventually taking the crown they failed to claim/keep.

ok but im getting emo over heinkel again so im gonna talk about him again because yeah hes yet another sad character in a sea of sad characters and i love rezero for that but like he is a character consistently characterized by one loss after the other. it's a rollercoaster and its going straight fucking down and he is so miserable and absolutely alone and its both his fault and not his fault at all. but the way it starts is - its all out of his control. the more you think about the trajectory of his life the sadder it gets.

imagine you are heinkel and your parents are the sword saint and the sword demon and you come from a long line of knights and sword saints so thats almost definitely where youre headed, right? thats whats expected of you. you are nineteen years old and youre a knight in the royal guard, which was expected of you, and you have a wife and a beautiful baby boy, which was also expected of you, but at least you have so much joy and love for the latter while the former is just another chain on the astrea family line of people who are stuck to knighthood whether they like it or not. but your family is also just another chain because youre nineteen and your mother is still the sword saint and youre playing with fate here because either youre going to be the sword saint or your son will be.

your wife, the only equal you have, falls asleep one day and never wakes up. you are twenty-one years old and a single parent and then you are twenty-three years old and your son's fate is so much bigger than youll ever be. having the worlds love means that your love pales in comparison, doesnt it? everyone knows about your comatose wife because you keep searching so much for a cure that its just another thing to gossip about. every year that passes by she just continues to look the same as she did when she was awake and alive and loved you. and everyone knows about you because of your family. because yeah, youre a good swordsman, but youre not liked by anyone in the knights. youre not a friend and youre certainly not a sword saint or sword demon. your son mind controls someone because he loves you so much that he would do anything for you and looks up to you like youre some hero, but youre just a wreck whos scrambling to keep what little you have. youre twenty-four and you lose your mom because you were too scared to go on the mission you were assigned on, because youre a coward and youre in over your head and you know, because everyone knows, that you dont measure up. you could never be prepared for this. in a long line of people who have to carry the weight of the world, you crumble easily. your mom goes on that mission and dies and your son becomes the sword saint like this was always going to happen. this is what being loved by the world means. you just killed your mom because you just couldnt suck it up and die on that mission instead. on top of that, your dad says that your five-year-old god of a son killed your mom. its just you and your son and the two of you both killed your mom but youre the worlds biggest laughing stock and your son is the up and coming hero and monster. but you still love your son. you really do.

#do you ever think about the concept behind wildemount. it was the calamity's the final battleground it's half-ruined and scarred over #the savalirwood is mutating. the barbed fields are barren. there are ancient ruins scattered all around the continent #they weren't left on purpose but they are a warning. something something this is not a place of honor. #and the people of wildemount reflect the landscape they're suspicious and rough. the leaders of the empire and the dynasty #(meaning the cerberus assembly and leylas kryn) are both vying for war and/or power - ikithon doesn't seem to care about the war but he #is throwing children into it like logs in a bonfire. leylas is going mad. da'leth remembers the calamity! and he still wants to take down #the gods! he was at ground zero and he wants to build it up again! not to mention that delilah briarwood is also an offshoot of the #assembly. the empire! with its archmages! delilah and ikithon and da'leth! they're the rotten core of it! and all of the m9 are from #wildemount but beau and caleb are the children of the empire. beau's dad's hatred and disregard for her (and remember kamordah is said to #be dreary and largely barren and her dad had to make that deal with the hag in order to make the ground fertile enough to grow grapes in #the country in the continent of barren ground) echoes the larger problem within the empire the assembly and ikithon and how he ruined #caleb's life. the empire kids. the children of the country that encapsulates wildemount's worst parts. the savalirwood is separate from #the empire as are the barbed fields but the people who symbolize the cause and effect of the calamity are in the empire's assembly it #starts and ends with them. they're the epicenter. they're ground zero. they're the poison into the drinking water. and beau and caleb are #the victims of that. of course beau is angry of course she was cast out. of course caleb is haunted of course he was left to die. that's #what wildemount and the empire does to its children. they are two out of two million. we just happened to follow their stories #AND THAT IS WHY BEAU AND CALEB FIGHT WITH EACH OTHER LIKE THEY DO. YOU CAN'T EXPECT CHILDREN OF THE EMPIRE TO TRUST EASILY. #they were both raised on ruined ground! beau was never loved and she was thrown out. caleb was incredibly loved and he killed his parents. #that is what the empire does. and. to see them in the end. raising hell and tearing the assembly down brick by brick #it's personal for caleb and it's meaningful for beau - what happened to them will not happen to any other child within the empire #they're breaking the cycle that's been spinning on and on for nearly two thousand years #and (caleb voice) it takes time. nearly a decade down the line they'll be trudging thru a desert on another continent in search of da'leth #but. my god. they're gonna do it. you know the chernobyl sarcophagus. the structure they built to hold the radiation in. that's them #that's why they read luciens book btw. that's what they're made to do. they r both so full of hubris - beau absolutely is btw. she would #icarus herself up to the sun in a heartbeat if she was given that level of freedom you know she would and that's the kind of hubris I #mean for both of them - the stubborn desperate confidence they have that they will prove everyone wrong and break free of the cycle (they #can do it. they just can't do it alone. they need each other and a whole support system to hold them back if need be. no wax wings for you #that's why they push each other so hard. that's why they lean on each other so much. they can't do it alone. and then they do it together #and end up rocketing towards almost near-certain death together. they just wanted to know more. those two always want so much more #that's why theyve always had that 'i'll watch you if you watch me' pact. together or not at all. and it still isn't enough. empire hubris
