If you have the stomach for uh... Let's call it "Cosmic horror on a Lovecractian scale, deeply unpleasant descriptions of bodily functions, macroscale parasites, and gore" the Mystery Flesh Pit is an excellent look at environmental world building. And an almost too casual and familiar horror that feels grounded and fantastical. All at once.

If it wasn't so viscerally unpleasant I'd be impressed.

Not a single damn direct source or text. Everything is brochures, posters, advertisements, letters, warning signs, sound samples of broadcast messages, and government reports. All fashioned like this abomination of a thing is legitimately a national park in Texas (Because of course it's in Texas).

Also a very good and believable example of the Hubris Of Man, because I can %100 believe people would actually do this if it was real.

Which it is not by the way. Do not be fooled.

It is just.... If you'll forgive the pun, very well fleshed out fiction.

Naturally, there are other less... Gory ARGs that you could also look at with pretty neat world building, but they're usually really cryptic. Mystery Flesh Pit is almost... Too honest in it's descriptions of all the terrible things in this inexplicable national park.

[I think with F.ate, despite its faults, has such beautiful concepts. I think about this whenever I watch the anniversary video because it is touching. Thinking about humanity saving humanity. How stories from hundreds, thousands of years ago, can still give comfort, or inspire, or push others to want to accomplish things that those in the past couldn't / or even learn valuable lessons from the mistakes made -- it's beautiful. How despite all the years that pass from ancient history to modernity, humans can still connect with those in the past and still feel things for them despite us being so far away from one another due to eras just gets you right here -touches chest-]

As someone who is simply fascinated by the lack of cultural impact Avatar (you know, the blue alien movie) has, even though it is the 4th highest grossing movie of all time, so people must have gone out and seen it, it absolutely delights me there's now more fanfiction for Goncharov (you know, the 1973 Martin Scorsese movie that doesn't actually exist) on AO3 than for Avatar

also since i just be talking 2day im going on record and saying that AI art isn’t coming for artists jobs. the MOST productive use for it at the moment is producing book covers for independent authors, but people who use AI book covers were probably just going to hop on Canva and make it themself anyway. the algorithm is really really bad at making coherent art, and it’s even worse at taking direct instructions from users. AI art is more akin to crayons and glitter glue for adults than an economic bulldozer. so like…. don’t worry lol

Oh to move to Iceland, live on the border of a small town near the mountains, and be an enigma. I appear in town to get my groceries, I sit in the local cafe and listen to the conversation. I mutter to myself and the birds that follow me. I’ll say thank you to people and greetings, nothing more. No communication. No constant socialisation. No relationship upkeep.

I think I’d have a pen pal. It’s still intimate but not this incessant talk. I write my little stories. Every month or two I dust out my earplugs, travel out to the closest post office, and pick up the materials for my newest craft project. My small cabin is warm and cluttered, I probably have a cat.

Oh to be quiet. To be alone. I still do my human need socialising but, quietly. In letters. Listening to strangers. Talking to birds. Writing stories.

Maybe sometimes when I need some exposure I travel into Reykjavik and attend a festival or tour. Maybe I pick up a course or a hobby group. But the key is that: I choose. I can choose when I need that. I’m not forced into all of this noise and lights and communication and relationships with seemingly no other choices. I choose: I have the social and economic mobility to choose.
