I would be super fascinated to learn more about how Peglar's views re. If humans get to be people why can't I, affects his relationship with Bridgens - and really just about how they came to be in/navigate through that relationship. Your art is adorable and I love it doubly more so for the amount of care and consideration you have for the inner works of creating a dog/cat boy world. :)

aw thank you this au really is my brain going "crack treated seriously" and somehow making This and im glad other ppl enjoy it too. i have a lot of thoughts on this in terms of how much history to keep and how much to disregard so its under the cut:

so apparently in the book (which i have not read and do not plan to read) bridglar met on the hms beagle and as far as i can tell thats completely made up bc peglar was sailing w the east india company at the time.

then theres the show weirdness of bridgens being like in his 50s/60s when irl bridgens was in his 20s and this makes more sense bc as far as i can tell the position of steward was usually one reserved for younger men so for 50smth bridgens to be jfj's steward is a little odd and esp odd if hes a human in a position that is typically meant for cat/dogboys so my logic for this is that either 1) jfj requested bridgens to be his steward or 2) bridgens requested to be jfj's steward and either option would mean giving bridgens and jfj a slightly closer relationship than what they have in show canon which is fine that just means peglar and bridgens likely met during the first opium war but then how they met is still a mystery bc peglar would be aboard the wanderer with hodgson and bridgens would be on the cornwallis/clio with jfj so like ???

POINT BEING for all the reasons above ive handwaved away exactly how they meet but AT SOME POINT they do meet during the first opium war. peglar was the one who initiated the relationship tho the two of them did have mutual feelings for each other before committing to anything and bridgens is deffo the kinda guy who would go all "i would love you no matter what species you are" and actually mean it and peglar. ok so. i have a lot of thoughts about peglar.

so irl peglar was lashed for drunkeness and mutinous conduct while serving with the east indian company and for catboy peglar i like to imagine that travelling to places where cat/dogboys arent treated the way they are treated in england really opened his eyes and his mind to the idea of being treated like a person and this is obviously not a mindset that human officers want him to have and hence why he was lashed. he then served on the wanderer fighting against the slave trade and thats another chance to see a different type of human-to-cat/dogboy relationship even if he wouldnt have had as many opportunities to live amongst the locals as he did while with the east india company. and peglars like, smart. part of the reason why bridgens falls in love w him is bc of his intelligence and cheek and wit and peglar knows that britiannia's "civilizing mission" is bogus because while they are trying to abolish slavery on one hand they are also actively enforcing Company rule in India on the other and bc peglar has seen both sides of that he has Thoughts about it, Thoughts he didnt dare share with anyone until bridgens coaxed it out of him and to his surprise bridgens agreed with him.

bridgens, being well read and well educated, also knows that the way england treats cat/dogboys is the exception and not the rule and really like cherishes peglar and loves him like truly loves him and is thus completely aware of and careful of their uneven power dynamic here and wouldve never been the first to initiate anything for that very reason. and its not easy to navigate this forbidden relationship but peglar makes it worth it and both of them did worry that maybe this was merely a maritime romance but in the months between the war and the expedition they managed to sneak in lowkey dates on land and found that they were still very much compatible and it really makes things all the more tragic that bridgens cant afford to adopt peglar outright and ensure that henry lives out the rest of his days in peace curled up next to the fire with a good book and smiling whenever he catches john staring at him and god, they are so in love.

i would deffo recommend an ao3 account! even if you dont post to it, there are some fics you cant read or comment on without an account (if the author chooses to set it as such), its super easy to bookmark fics, etc. and if you want to post a fic without it being connected to your account, you can just post it anonymously or orphan it.

there is an email waitlist to make an account though, so if youre even just thinking about it itd be worth signing up now so you dont have to wait too long if you go through with it

aaaaaaaaaand the energy continues to be low, naturally I would continue to be lacking recovery at the height of essay writing season. This part comes fresh from the fingertips of my post nap self since I did a grocery shop this morning (i forgot to buy tea :’)))) and just passed tf out after lunch. I would make another cuppa to attempt to feel the benefits of a little caffeine boost but, even though my kettle is in my room, bed too snuggly and warm to leave.

Deffo intrigued by part 2, the prelude and prologue are making more sense in relation to the plot now and im liking the characterisation and relationship dynamics that are being built :))

Spoiler Free Zone: 

The absolutely heart wrenching feeling seeing Shallan NOT in this part that I experienced yesterday was not ok. BUT the introduction of the Elhokar, Adolin, Dalinar, Renarin and Sadeas interactions is kinda worth it bc they’re hella entertaining.

Kaladin maintaining the better energy in this part is great too, he’s on some kinda wild grindset like I could personally never but pop off ig king.

Syl and her progression too? Living for it. I can’t wait to find out more about her as the book continues.

Spoiler Zone:

Interesting change in chapter quotes, I was very much enjoying the before death quotes but I dont know I think I vibe with these too. I’m assuming they’re from a letter to someone and whoever is writing it is so sassy I love it: “I hope this missive find you well” to “now that you are essentially immortal, I would guess that wellness on your part is something of a given” is so iconic.

In the ways of tabs, I simply loved Dalinar’s little moment just riding his horse with the wind hitting his face like mf needs a break from having these visions like the destress must’ve been immense. 

And then his little smile when Elhokar won their little like race thingy, so cute, we love positive masculine relationships omg 

Which naturally just had to be interrupted by memories of his vision and stress out the poor guy. I will say though I love a character that has questionable means of acquiring knowledge that is untrusted by their peers (hello Jonathan Sims of The Magnus Archives) so I’m super on the edge of my seat over this visions business 

On my earlier topic of character interactions tho, Wit is READING the whole family to filth my goodness. Like yeah it was chill whatever when he was just teasing Renarin over girls but the shade on Sadeas? As he fucking should. Sadeas is a bitch and should be treated as such. 

Then the fight, ugh. While I love the lore of like chasmfiends, and gemhearts and how they’re harvested and their uses and all that jazz; and OBVIOUSLY you can’t beat a cheeky little beat down of some insect like creature; Elhokar’s little main character ‘I’m hard as fuck’ call to destiny “I defy you” moment made my blood boil and instantly lose any likeability towards him. It was a major ick. You’d thinking having inherited the title of king that long ago that he would have matured more.

Alas, all I had tabbed in Kaladin’s bit was between him and Syl (what can I say I love her). Her whole self-awareness into gaining intelligence and sentience is so cool and I’m so intrigued to see how it progresses. Its kinda sad that shes stuck inbetween the threat of forgetting into being ignorant of everything that has happened and all she knows and, although that would be easier, not wanting to lose the freedom of what she knows. 

And on that same page, Kaladin says something I think everyone needs to hear: “I don’t know what I am either. A bridgeman? A surgeon? A soldier? A slave? Those are all just labels. Inside, I’m me.”

HIII IM TYPING SLOELY COS IM IN SCHOOL BUT IT WAS SOOO GOOD gonna give a whole ass description of the day cos all ny friends where sthere so ive told no one.

Ok i had to add a read more cos it got long

so we got there like 3 hours early in the queue ehich was deffo worth it cos we got a good spot cos of it and we made some friends in the queue and i think they must of thought of us as actually insane like. Anyway we got.inside and it was like.Wow Ok this is real and people kept holding things up on their phones and we kept cheering for them. some notable examples include: shrek, catboy gnf(i think), autism creature(we all shouted YIPEE), a picture of a pride flag(which we all cheered) and then a britain flag(which we bood for) and then kept swapping between them and we kept cheering and booing it was very fun. AND THEN THE SUPPORT ACTS WHERE SO GOOD ASWELL they both seemed really sweet im gonna go have a proper nose at them tonight. and then inbetween them both is when wilbur started the philza chant which was fun . OH right i wore philza merch and someone complimented me as i walked into the queue. Oh m ygod wilbur soot IN REAL LIFE literallt so insane like??? ny man said MY CITY!!! and ohhh my goddd it.was so cool we just kept.bouncing uo and down and we SCREAMINF whenever he said like anything anddd THE FALL WAS SO GOOOD you know during the BIT of the fall the ligjts where flashinf black and white and i couldnt see a thing BUT I WAS JUMPING UP AND DOWN AND SCREAMING IT WAS SO COOL felt like i was inna weird cool dream IT WAS SO GOOD. and then they ended and we IMMEDIATELY started shouting "ONE MORE SONG ONE MORE SONF" an they came back snd was like Wow youve done this before havent you AND PLAYED 3 MORE and iafiap played and my friends got so excited cos its like their favourite AND THEN THEY ENDED WITH CONCRETE WHICH IS MY FAVOURITE. i was sos happy like proper bouncing.OH AND THEY HAD A NEW SONG THAT THEY APPARENTLY WONT PLAY ANYWHERE ELSE and no ones allowed to post it online(they never said anything about sending a video tho wink wink) AND I GOT MERCH oh my god the queue for merch was so long COS YOU CANT USE CARD YOU HAVE TO USE LIKE BANK TRANSFER? Summary:

What she doesn't count on is that Jordan is far more clever than the others ever were, and what more, there's a very convenient attraction between them...

My review:

I am a recent Kathleen Ayers fan, so it was interesting to see how this book measured up to others I've read recently. I would say the chemistry and romance aspect of the novel was pretty solid, but there wasn't as much of a plot in comparison. I could be wrong but at a little less than 200 pages, it felt shorter than her other books. The plot can be summed up by Jordan adamantly continuing to court Odessa in order to save his siblings and erase the debt, while Odessa puts on a fat suit and blackens her teeth and eats onions (so many onions) to make herself as unappealing as possible. It's funny for a while until it isn't quite as much.

Jordan is an excellent example of a more jaded, world-weary hero who's not above fighting dirty when needed. The best way to describe Odessa is that in the modern era, she would deffo be a true crime girlie and possibly an occultist. She's probably one of those heroines some readers would find "annoying" but I liked her. You can't help but be sympathetic to a woman who's basically her father's pawn, despite how much she asserts herself or tries to outmaneuver him. I'd say the main draw of this book is the chemistry between Jordan and Odessa which is present from the very beginning despite Odessa's best efforts to make herself as unappealing as possible. It's a large part of what made the book work. Speaking of chemistry—

The sex:

Well done, and despite the length of the book, there were a few solid scenes. Here's what worked for me:

a) Odessa is a Knowing Virgin (thanks Aunt Lottie). Also a Ready Virgin because as Jordan comments she has a... "natural sensuality"? I think is what he said. But basically, she knows what's up and I loved that.

b) This deserves a note of its own: She has a hand fetish (hot) which Jordan quickly clocks and uses on her

c) There is some light choking during their first (proper) kiss. Also, they 100% would have gone all the way in the middle of that party if they wanted which, again, Jordan notes

d) This may be a bit of a spoiler but people in historical romances do..... Stuff in the place they had sex for the first time, but they don't often go all the way (especially because she was a virgin), so I was pleasantly surprised when they did, but also, it tracks for them as a couple.

Overall:

I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, light historical romance that doesn't skimp on the sex. It's also worth noting the book set up Jordan's siblings (the other "Sins" in this series): There's the sister who races horses against men who're partially there to see her in trousers, the brother who's probably a gigolo, another brother who's probably a spy, and their baby sister who's so sweet she deserves a dastardly hero of her own. I'm looking forward to reading all their books.

· He was soooo scared of meeting your parents (had to call Armin to ask for advice)

· Now you guys have happily been dating

Unsurprisingly, he catches on pretty quickly.

At first, it kind of catches him off guard. His waist/hips aren’t normally the thing people tend to flatter him for. But it’s not like he hates it. He actually loves it.

He’s literally a goth mom that stays wearin his corset vests. MC deffo has a field day when he wears his fancy getup.

If MC is too scared to put their hands on him but wants to, he’ll most definitely notice, and encourage it when they’re alone.

He’s not one to dress FOR someone else, but it’s worth wearing a tight-fitted shirt if that means he gets a reaction out of MC.

Every time he catches their stare, he smirks and pushes his massive coat aside oh-so-casually. Just enough to give them what they want.

He notices the staring, but thinks nothing of it. After all, he’s not a model for nothing, right?

One day, MC lets a comment about it slip, intentionally or not.

Mammon is reduced to ash. That is the end of him. RIP.

He’s never the same.

Before, the attention from modeling was just a side effect of being naturally handsome. A downside of it, even.

But now, his favorite human EVER has a FAVORITE part of him that they love? Because they pay attention to him that much?

And to him, that’s the best feeling in the world. If they like that part of him, he feels proud of having it. And proud that he wears a thin shirt and cropped jacket everyday.

One time, he brought them to one of his shirtless photoshoots.

Bad idea. The entire time, he was slightly flushed and shaky from their adorable reaction to seeing him.

UGH I LOVE HIM HES SO SWEET.

It all started with that damned photo of him in a towel. We know the one.

Levi is very aware of everyone’s eyes on him.

So he gets super flustered when MC watches him for a prolonged amount of time.

But because of that big jacket of his, they have to eventually ask, “Have you ever considered just wearing a t-shirt? Maybe a long sleeved shirt?”

He’s confused, but changes into a slim fit long sleeve.

When MC continues to stare at him intently, he can feel himself shrink a little in embarrassment.

“Y-You’re silently judging me, aren’t you? Ahhh, forget it! This is exactly why Iive in the comfort of my jacket...”

It takes lots of encouragement, but he finally understands that MC does NOT feel revolted just by looking at him.

While he won’t give up wearing his jacket, he takes it off when the two are alone and playing video games.

His favorite thing in the world is allowing them to wrap their arms around his waist while he plays his video games.

Just like Mammon, it gives him butterflies thinking that someone loves his body when he can’t do it himself.

Satan also notices the stares, but writes it off as nothing important similarly to Mammon.

He’s a bookworm. He could care less about his appearance when he’s immersed in the tragic downfall of history’s greatest knights.

But he finds it a bit... Cute? Endearing? Just the thought that something so irrelevant to himself is so captivating to this human nowhere near his power level.

In his mind chock-full of thousands of years of book reading, he envisions it as a rabbit falling in love with a wolf for its triangular ears.

He’s a little off put by the idea of them touching them in such a place, but in the moment, he understands it completely.

MC’s touch is gentle but firm— loving, is what it is.

Being the avatar of wrath has many downsides. Including being avoided at all costs by so many people, even by his own brothers at some points.

So it feels great to just feel absolutely adored by someone.

We been knew.

He’s the embodiment of want. So he knows all about it. ‘It’ being the way MC discreetly sneaks glances at him from across the room.

And he goes wild for it.

He brings it up casually. Almost too casually.

“Look at how close we’re sitting MC~ I’m practically on top of you. But be careful, who knows what I’d do if you kept staring like that...”

Asmo is just waiting for the moment MC makes a move. He wants to see what it looks like for them to finally stop holding back. The mere thought of it gets his adrenaline pumping.

And as the two are posing for a selfie together, their hands instinctively go to his sides.

MC doesn’t even realize that they haven’t moved their hands even after the photo. They only realize when Asmo puts his hands over their own, smiling innocently.

“You’re too cute, MC...”

One thing that Asmo starts suggesting is slow dancing. Just the two of them, in his room swaying to the sound of his slow song playlist.

Simply enjoying each other to the tune of vintage ballroom rythms never seemed so beautiful.

Beel has a body that many would go great lengths for. It doesn’t quite resonate with him, because eating well and exercising is just his thing. They’re hobbies.

While he gets lots of compliments about it (particularly from Asmo), he doesn’t think about the curves and edges of his frame very much. He only thinks about what muscles require what stretches and workouts.

And unfortunately, he doesn’t notice any of MC’s affection for his hips.

The prolonged hugs, the staring and flushed complexion. To him, it’s all part of their friendship.

Even if they outright say, “Beel. Ur thiccness is very good.”

It doesn’t hit him very hard. He’s like yea? And? 😌🤚

However, he does have a bit of internalized insecurities about his looks. It’s not necessarily his body, but how others react to... Him.

How many times has he met someone and they didn’t look the slightest bit intimidated? Exactly. He has a resting bitch face on an athlete’s body when he’s one of the sweetest demons alive.

So yes. He is insecure. But when MC finds even the most insignificant things about him to be endearing, it reminds him that, even for a second, he can be loved in his own skin.

Just like his twin, he doesn’t particularly care for the way his body looks. Especially to others.

He couldn’t care less of what negative things anyone had to say about him, anyways. Been there, done that.

But he can’t help but notice the electricity buzzing through his tired limbs when MC keeps a lingering hand around his sides.

It’s a little odd, he notes. That such a small gesture causes his body to react like that. But it’s pleasant, he’ll admit.

And then he notices just how often it happens. Even when they’re not cuddling. MC will have a hand on his waist, for even a moment.

“MC, do you like touching me there? You don’t do it to anyone else, I’ve noticed.”

They are embarrassed— mostly because they never really realized they were doing it. As soon as they go to apologize, Belphie lets out his sweet giggle.

“It’s okay. I actually like it... It’s cute that you do it so absentmindedly.”

thank you for the kind words :DDD im glad my fics are funny because i ksdjbfkjds i put a lot of effort into making them funny. and i kNOW your question here is absolutely rhetorical but uh....heres the thing.....

i do know why my writing is funny (to some ppl). tis mayhaps because ive studied humor theory, read comedy fiction, and obsessively picked apart any funny show ive seen for YEARS because humor theory is genuinely a huge interest of mine.

so much so that i actually wrote a whole analysis essay on the three qualities of humor i utilize most in my stories. it's a bit of a hefty read but maybe youd enjoy it if ur curious about comedy and how i write it!!!

but yeah, ive been interested in humor writing for a long time. it's always something ive admired and my favorite authors (Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Tim Kreider (the guy who wrote the "submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known" article), and many more) have basically perfected this art because comedy is fuckin hard to pull off. any writing professor will tell you this: you'll have an easier time making people cry than making people laugh.

cuz the thing about making things funny is that youre working on (i mention this in the analysis linked above but it's quite important that i feel the need to reiterate it here) INCONGRUENCE. aka things you dont expect.

thats the bedrock for any joke. it's the "knock knock. whos there? an owl. an owl who? hoo hoo!" and it can be taken to such lengths and complexity and subversions that it's a core humor element, at least in my writing. but incongruence varies. what one person doesnt expect might be something another totally expects. this is where "sense of humor" comes in aka everybodys got a different type of humor they respond to the most

so when im writing, it's a lot of hits and misses. some jokes land for a lot of people, other jokes only rlly tickle the funny bone of two to three people.

but also if it's funny to the writer themselves, it's deffo worth putting in no matter what cuz writing is generally sposed to be a joy. that aside tho, im always working on studying humor further and employing everything i learn about humor in my works
