Ah yes now that my Inquisitor Valentines are out I can tell you what a STRUGGLE they were to finish, mostly because my tablet, which is of course infamously wonky, was in its last dying throes.

Like I've had it since ~2017, and used it consistently for about 3 of those 6 years, so I feel pretty strongly it shouldn't be in this bad of shape. It started with some strange quirk of the USB C connection, where every time you turned the tablet back on or woke it up from sleep, you'd have to change which port it was connected to in the computer otherwise it would read "no signal". Okay, weird, but I could live with that, even if I had to try like 6 combinations of ports between the tablet and laptop to find one that worked each time.

It would sometimes register phantom touches that weren't there and randomly hit a different tool or window or leave a stray dot on my work and I'd have to go back and fix it. Again, quirky, but liveable.

Then lately it's been just abruptly not registering pen touches in the middle of a drawing, and no amount of unplugging, re-starting, etc., would get it to register again. Even though the cursor would move when you hovered the pen over it, Wacom's software couldn't detect that a tablet was connected to the computer. The only fix was to completely uninstall and reinstall the driver. Every time. Which was annoying, but I lived with it when it affected me every 3-4 drawing sessions.

By the time I got to my lineart/coloring of Trilla on Sunday, this problem was occuring once every 5-30 minutes. I had a 2.5 hour drawing session where I had to reinstall my driver TWELVE times. I couldn't even finish putting flat colors on her face before it would crap out again! Luckily for Inky it only happened twice during the session, but by then I had HAD ENOUGH.

Again, I reiterate that I bought my Wacom Cintiq Pro 13 ~6 years ago. It was an incredibly expensive tablet then. They don't even make them anymore, now the smallest Cintiq Pro available is a 16". And since I JUST had to buy a new car after my last one broke down, I definitely did not have $650 to spend on a tablet. Besides, my faith in Wacom is shaken now. Even though my first tablet ever was a Wacom Bamboo back in the early 2010's, and I've also had an Intuos. This was one failure too far.

So my lovely husband has ordered for me a Huion Kamvas 13. The technical specifications look really good, and the price was even better. Really excited about the display and color range, since that was my biggest complaint with my Cintiq. Anything in the range of yellow/pink/orange/brown had a really green tone to it on my display, and it made it difficult to percieve the colors well, especially when trying to make realistic skin tones. I am looking forward to trying it out!

What do you use to draw? I'm pretty sure you use a drawing tablet, but what brand? Any reccomendations?

I have two Gaomon tablets! One which I use for my laptop and one that I use for my desktop.

The one I use for my desktop is a Gaomon PD2200. It's a rather large tablet that comes with a stand. It's really neat, and the screen itself is this sort of matte cover that makes it feel a little more like paper. The main downside is that the 'buttons' aren't 'buttons' so much as they are 'touch buttons'. As a result, you can't really feel when you're pressing on the buttons, so if you try to use them without looking at them, you could press the wrong thing. I ended up not using them and keeping them on, and eventually had to turn that whole function off because it kept picking up inputs that I wasn't giving it and making me think that my computer was messing up.

The one I use for my laptop is a much smaller one that plugs directly into it. It's a PD1161. It has a much smaller screen, but the upside is that it's a display tablet (like the PD2200) and it acts as a second monitor, so I can look at what I'm drawing while I'm watching a YouTube channel and being online. This one has unmarked buttons (that I could mark with a silver sharpie or something), but they're actual buttons, so I already consider that to be a plus.

I like Gaomon! It's a rather fair brand for the price, I feel. The only things I don't really like about them that I've consistently noticed in between both of the products that I have is that:

The colors look different from how they are on the other screen and it's difficult to try to figure out how to adjust them to the same values

The biggest issue I have is that there's often a drift from where the pen is and where the tablet detects it as being. It varies all around the board, and calibrating the screen doesn't seem to do much to fix it. Checking on my drawing tablet right now, it looks to be less accurate towards the center and more accurate around the edges of the screen for some reason. You can work around it, but it's a little frustrating at times that you have to focus on the actual cursor on the screen.

The PD2200 and its touch buttons are difficult to use, and even when I wasn't using them, they still eventually ended up detecting false inputs that made me dread trying to draw on it and frustrated me to no end. I eventually figured out what the issue was, but it took a good couple of months before it finally clicked in my brain after getting a whole other keyboard and noticing that the issues were still continuing.

Aside from drawing tablets, my traditional mediums tend to vary! I like to experiment from time to time with different mediums, and this includes ballpoint pens, sketching pencils, India inks, calligraphy ink, watercolors, alcohol markers, colored pencils... it helps me feel less like I'm sitting in the same rut all the time, being able to swap in between different mediums and experiment. Sometimes what you need to get out of art block is a bit of rest. Sometimes what you need is trying something different!

Traditional-wise, what I really want to do is get a bundle of colored calligraphy inks so I can do some colored lineart, but all that Amazon's really showing me is India inks and glass pen inks. Which are all water-based and not made for calligraphy pens.

As an aside, as a touch of experimentation, I figured out that India inks and glass pen inks work very well on watercolor paper, and it doesn't blot or bleed as much as it does on sketch paper! Sort of makes me wish I did that Pure Vanilla drawing on watercolor paper instead of a sketchbook, but then again I also wish I used a different color for the lineart anyway, so. You win some, you lose some.

Experimenting is,, fun. I think people deserve to experiment.

There’s an app taskbar along the bottom edge of the screen that’s pretty much identical to what Samsung and Google have. Anyone who has used those phones will feel right at home here.Simply open one app, then drag another up from the taskbar to either side of the display to put OnePlus Open in a split-screen view. You can do this with up to three apps, though the screen can really only display two at a time. The edge of the third app can be seen beside, above, or below the other two apps. To view it, just tap it; one of the other two apps will be relegated to that position instead.

I never felt it was abnormally tall. At 239g (or about a half-pound), it’s remarkably light for something that’s essentially two phones stacked on top of each other. This creates an experience on par with the Z Fold 5 and Pixel Fold on a basic level. The OnePlus Open is a nice phone to use, whether it’s folded or unfolded. Both displays are bright, vibrant, and smooth. Whether you’re scrolling social media, reading a book, or streaming videos, you’re pretty much good to go.

What I dislike about OnePlus Open

However, OnePlus partnered with Swedish camera manufacturer Hasselblad for the camera design, as it has in the past — and the result this time is a monstrously large circular camera bump that might look fancy, but gets in the way more often than not.Seriously, the thing takes up something like 40 percent of the phone’s backside. When using OnePlus Open one-handed as a normal phone, it’s almost impossible not to touch it. I found this very annoying throughout my time with the device, and vastly prefer Google and Samsung’s smaller camera relays.Not quite a powerhouseAgain, going back to the spec sheet, OnePlus Open should be a mega-powerhouse thanks to its state-of-the-art chipset and frankly almost excessive amount of RAM. But testing tells a different story.The Geekbench 6 benchmarking app gave the device a relatively meager multi-score score of 4,411. Compared to benchmark scores for other recent Android handsets, it’s unimpressive. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes in at 4,987. More to the point, the OnePlus 11 from earlier this year came in at 4,891.It doesn’t make a lot of sense for a very expensive device, with beefy-looking specs, to generate a score that much lower than other phones that should be less powerful. To be fair, this doesn’t mean the OnePlus Open’s performance is bad. I didn’t encounter any noteworthy slowdown or hitches in my time with it, even while multitasking three apps at once. Pretty much any new flagship device you can buy in 2023 has a baseline performance level that’s at least good. It’s just that some are better than others, and OnePlus Open falls behind some cheaper devices, according to benchmarking software.

What’s ‘eh’ about OnePlus Open

It’s not all there yetAnother potential issue with OnePlus Open that’s worth acknowledging is something that’s generally true of any manufacturer’s first attempt at something. In short, there’s one really big missing feature: Wireless charging.At a sticker price of $1,800, you’d generally expect support for that sort of thing. I don’t personally care all that much about wireless charging, as I find it inefficient. But I know a lot of people prefer it, and they won’t be served here.I’d be remiss not to mention that a 67W charger comes in the box; it can juice this bad boy up in less than an hour. That should soften the blow of not having wireless charging somewhat, but again, not everyone will be satisfied with that.

OnePlus Open cameras

OnePlus did not skimp on the camera specs, either. There are five total lenses (three on the back, two on the front): - 48MP main rear lens - 64MP telephoto rear lens - 48MP ultra-wide rear lens - 20MP selfie cam on the inside - 32MP selfie cam on the outsideAgain, big numbers! With those big numbers come an adequate set of modes and final results that can look reasonably beautiful, or at least beautiful enough for your Instagram feed.

I love New York. Credit: Alex Perry/Mashable One thing that impressed me was the telephoto lens, to an extent. It’s got up to 6X in-camera zoom, and up to 120X (!!!) “Ultra Res” zoom capabilities. Up to 6X, things look fantastic. I was able to get ultra-sharp photos of the Empire State Building from all the way across the East River that way.

OnePlus Open battery life

I wasn’t able to use any battery benchmarking software with OnePlus Open due to a lack of compatibility, but the practical results spoke for themselves. I was able to get a little more than 24 hours of normal usage (social media, streaming music and videos, etc.) before I had to plug it in. That’s not overly impressive, but it’s at least on par with other contemporary flagship devices. Combine that with the fact that it charges super quickly, and battery life isn’t really a problem here.

Silence is so loud I love it

Sony’s new headphones are literally one of the things keeping me alive right now. I’m talking about the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones.

So the headphones that I had before the new ones were the cheap ones you buy at literally any store. They were also very small on my ears and I had to wear my glasses a certain way to not get hurt because oh my god did it hurt like hell when I forgot to adjust my glasses. Also my piercings. I had to take the bottoms ones off every time i use them.

(don’t get me wrong, this isn’t me complaining. Those headphones very cheap and lasted me two years before the sound started glitching. Like cutting s song in the middle and continue after a few seconds, the battery was very weak compared to how it started at first)

Just your normal wireless headphones you know? But as someone who lives with a lot of people and many kids but is used to have at least some quiet around the house, this just wasn’t doing it for me. So I wanted noise canceling headphones.

At first someone recommended the Bose Wireless Headphones and when I saw the price I laughed so hard the employee had to come ask me if I was okay. Needless to say, I embarrassed myself in front of an entourage and never went back to that store again.

Then I went and searched for other headphones that were less expensive and still have the same things I wanted. I did look at earphones but it wasn’t the same.

And then my brilliant mind remembered for the first time in a while that Sony released new headphones. The WH-1000XM5.

So I went to the Sony store and looked at its price, then almost collapsed.

(Look, I said lower your expectations of me from the first post okay?)

But I didn’t want to give up just yet so I stayed and searched.

Then I found them.

There they were, on display, gorgeous black color, perfect price, and after I tried them on, they had the most amazing sound ever: bird sounds.

I’m kidding. The guy selling it was demonstrating it to me and he won this round. So I bought it. The ones I bought were almost 330$. Not sure if that was the exact number.

When I went home I unpacked them (and oh my god I love unpacking things, especially new devices. It’s a thing I have don’t judge) and immediately tried them on.

I turned them on and silence. Literal silence. I loved it. The music was really good, when I put on a movie the sound couldn’t be better. The battery life lasts a week, maybe more, but if you’re like me who uses it everyday, it’ll last for like five days, maybe more? I haven’t had their battery run out. Still good.

The soft padding of its speakers and the size of them didn’t require me to adjust my glasses in a certain way or take my piercing out. It was very comfortable and it didn’t hurt. Plus the padding for your head was very soft.
