Minor throwaway sentence in a book on corruption I've just finished was talking about 1930s gangsters and about certain organisations in Chicago which the author stated were more ethnically diverse than the Italian mafia, and whose members were said to have included 'Irish, Welsh, Italian, and Jewish' gangsters.
Now call me sheltered but I've seen MANY Italian American gangsters immortalised in film, I've heard of the Jewish mob, and the police Irish American gangs but I have yet to see a movie about the Welsh mob. As a rule I don't go in for gangster movies but I feel there's an unfilled niche here and also I need more info.
#Might delete this in a bit#On a more serious note given the context of the Great Depression and slumps in the coal mining districts of Britain#I can see why Welsh people who emigrated to America might be form an impoverished immigrant community targeted by organised crime#And possibly my surprise comes from outdated national stereotypes and the fact that popular stereotypes of 1930s gangsters#Rarely include immigrant groups that are largely Protestant (at least in the US- in Glasgow and London it's a different story)#Makes me wonder if all those Catholic Aesthetics that directors who make movies about Italian and Irish mobsters are so fond of#Would play the same with Meredith Davies who may be a crook but at least he regularly attends the Methodist chapel#And is a teetotaller and a fixture in various choirs#Welsh accents are often quite soft too I think I'd be fucking terrified of a Welsh gangster in a movie tbh#To be fair real life organised crime obviously encompassed people from all walks of life I'm more interested in movie depictions here#'More Welsh representation!' 'Ah yes how about as gangsters?' 'Er...'#Less surprised if I come across Scots because eventhough they're privileged in the US English media does seem to view Scottish accents#As threatening so Scots often get roped in to play tough guys and gangsters and villains in all sorts of media#And often they will get an Englishman to play a Scot and Scots to play Eastern Europeans which is also weird#But that's off topic; I am not however used to Welsh villains

I’m in Rome and have some updates for the few of you who followed my girl drama in Brussels last December:
Saw German girl and she immediately came to hug me and chat. She was tired after a long train ride and I was also tired from a long day of traveling so we didn’t interact for long. I’m told she’s just very friendly but I’m genuinely not used to that kind of attention and also she’s really cute and I AAAAAAAAAAAAH
Italian girl is sleeping on top of me. As in a bunk bed. But I swear this is some fanfic shit.
Another Italian girl said I reminded her of someone she knows and when she showed me a pic I went “girl I wish that was me” and she said “well, that was a compliment” and now that I’m thinking about that I’m all ?????
There’s also another cute German girl in my room and my Portuguese buddy has already started with his theories.

I love the friend I'm catsitting for dearly but WHO TF doesn't keep basil in their spice cabinet. Ik it's winter so fresh basil is not readily available unless you're indane like my family and grow your own, but not even DRIED basil?? She has like every other significant herb or spice AND some uncommon ones, meticulously organized and labelled, but NO BASIL
I would blame it on her having been raised by super WASP parents but she's got TONS of more ~foreign~ spices

the terror has me itching to fall into another rabbit hole about victorian racism because they absolutely nail the despair james would feel at "not being even English" but I need the details of what the Victorians were thinking about the Brazilians specifically. It's already pretty wild that James ends up embodying the English fear of miscegenation of all things, which right now I can't remember if it's openly addressed when it comes to Francis and Sophia or it's only implied (I am aware about the essays on how the Irish are an inferior race of "white gorillas", I don't believe for a second Sir John wasn't) but the ties to a different colonial empire...they had a caste system too, to add to the mindfuckery.

Dumb thing to be insecure about I know but god I hate the term 'dick sucking lips'. Some fucking guy said that to me once and it's stuck with me for ages. Really gross thing to say unprompted. As if my body parts 'intended' purpose is to suck your dick. Ugh.

I got fully spotted as "other" today while on holiday in Spain. The guy serving at the care took one look at me and went "Turkish?" And I was like ... "No? I'm British" and he gestured to his face and went "ahhh. You look Turkish"
Let's be clear, I do not "look Jewish" if you go by stereotypes. I'm not short, I'm quite stocky, I don't have a "Jewish nose🙄" but even most people I know immediately clock me as "other".
Jews are not fucking white.

do Italians talk loudly and gesture a lot like they say? Is there any Italian stereotype you hate bc it's just not true?
Hmm well yes some of us talk loudly (especially youngers at night gdohlahclhsc) and gesture a lot. I think gestures do help us in our communication: we may even have a whole conversation only through gestures (check this video. It's a bit of an exaggeration cause probably we may whisper something here and there, but it toally works. I understand it all anyway -and you can read the subtitles of the whole convo at the end of the video, but if you have questions please send an ask)
The stereotype I hate the most is the one about mafia. We're not that, and abroad there's a wrong understanding of what it actually is. Another stereotype that I don't appreciate much is probably about us not being really hardworking but just enjoying "la bella vita" and always being late, but that again it's not true: we're hardworking and we like to party/relax when we can; and yes we may be late but it can happen to anyone in the world. I don't think that these facts can strictly relate only to our Nation, they seem just worldwide to me.
Thanks for asking!
