OMG Nova so, I'm almost done with the rewriting of the Power of Understanding, (two chapters got kind of a big rework, some important details changed and made consistent and stuff), but since you and @screechingplant are the only people I know that actually READS it, I'm kinda tempted to tag you when I post the update because I DONT KNOW??

17 - What do you do when writing gets difficult? - probably not the answer people want to hear but I usually play games dscsdv, I've been playing through the strawberry jam mod for Celeste recently and would recommend that game in general to anyone really (madeline/badelines relationship is just like four and shadow and I <3 it)

18 - Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles? - It depends on the fic actually, some I named before for example cannibros was just a discord joke name with my wife that eventually got written as a collab. whereas most of my other fics if they were given a title were named after writing based on what they're about and if I could come up with a stupid pun in most cases side-eyes I would dye for you

40 - If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you like to see? - honestly getting any fanart is just the best thing in itself and I love seeing anything that's been made. but for a fic I'd like to see, and scene? the cannibros. everything in that is just crack that was so fun to write and I love how we wrote the chain in it with Sky and Cal being my personal faves - Twi and Sage competing for that tho. The confrontation of Cal and Wild is just <33

they are so silly to me to imagine in-canon. because okay. you have schlatt, who's this super over-confident guy who thinks himself on top of the world. everyone should listen to his every word and command because he's obviously the smartest and most powerful person present. and then you have jordan, who's kind of an anxious wreck on the best of times, has like 4 close friends max, and needs to be dragged to any social event ever. he constantly apologizes for merely existing. if i asked you which one was the badass hero who saved the entire multiverse and which was the cringefail businessman who has never succeeded on a business scheme once. i do not think you would get it right. they drive me absolutely crazy insane <333

i am so in love w life right now. i wake up super early & i do pilates. i love to hear the chirping of birds in my quiet house on a sunday morning and i play jazz records and silently make myself coffee and enjoy it with a poem. i am developing a habit of eating fruit everyday and i take long walks in the evening and i love watching people do their thing. i visit the beach atleast three times a week, i love the sea and feeling the gentle breeze of the wind on my face. spending my time at beautiful coffee shops and bookstores. i study on my living room floor and actually love that. i read every night before i go to sleep & listen to music while watching the hills illuminated by lights. my friends come over every friday and we cook dinner together and have a little dinner party, i drink wine in the bath, i buy myself flowers and take myself out for dinners. i actually feel good & fulfilled w my life <3

there are so many amazing and powerful benders in atla but what i love about zuko is that whether or not he can use his bending in that moment has zero (0) bearing on how much he’s going to absolutely kick your ass. no bending? that’s fine - he’s got swords. no swords or bending? that’s fine - he’s literally just going to beat you up. if you’re REALLY unlucky then you get all three. as a treat.

I think there's no greater indication that disco elysium is sympathetic towards communism when it literally says "communism is failure" and then the literal gameplay itself rewards trying and failing. The most obvious one being the Shivers check at the FELD mural, which is an Impossible 20 check BUT opens itself up again and again the longer you spend in the world doing things, but even just looking at sheer probabilities, for any given white check, rolling first and THEN putting a point into that skill upon failure is more likely to grant you success than putting a point first and then rolling, but that would require failing first.

Other things too: Precarious world saying you'll 100% fail red checks no matter what (not necessarily a bad thing, btw!! throwing the boule into the sea is a success but like. in some other ways one would want a perfect petanque throw instead. but people wouldn't typically assume that failure is desirable sometimes from the start) persuading you to accept that you'll fail some things that is irrevocable, for a world where everything is just a tiny bit easier.

The faux game over screen when you faint after reading Dora's letter— emulating a sense of failure on the scale of the entire game. When it rolls up most people go "What?? Game over?? No way, what did I do wrong!!" and waking up after that, with no huge or lasting impact on Harry's health or morale really tells the player, "Sometimes things will seem so bad that it all seems like it's coming to an end, but it's not the end, it's really not the end, go drink so water, you can still go on despite this failure"

I'm sure there are other things as well that are eluding me but like. The literal gameplay rewards failing and succeeding far more so than simply succeeding every single time, and I think you get a fuller experience of Elysium that way too

You know those "write badly!" posts that sometimes makes the rounds to encourage all you lovely writers that it's okay that not everything is a masterpiece?

Yeah, those.

I just want all you authors out there not feeling good enough to know that i just decided to reread one of the worst fics I've ever read. Because it's one of the best fics I've ever read.

The plot is simplistic at best. The language is horrible. The pacing is nowhere to be found behind all the "and then!!!" the author peppers their writing like a carbonara with.

But

The characters. The insights into their motivations is fucking master thesis level. I cry just thinking about the way the author predicted where canon was headed years ago. And the way they Preemptively fixed all the ooc-ness the mangaka is now struggling to wrap up.

It's been living in my head rent-free for years and i wouldn't want it any other way. Just with slightly less "and then!!"

So yes, write badly.

In three years time some sucker will come back for seconds because they loved it for all the things you Did manage to do right.
