For example, the Great Barrington declaration, which was written by three of the most prominent epidemiologists in the world from Harvard, Oxford, and I think it was Stanford. That was basically deleted from YouTube, banned from Facebook, simply because it contradicted the WHO, CDC official version of events.

It is just groupthink enforced by a cabal of woke billionaires, who have more power than anyone else on the planet.

The other thing that emerged during this year very quickly is that we are at a hinge moment of history. We were told a generation or two back that, by doing trade with China, China would become more like us. Instead, on issues such as free speech, we are becoming more like China.

American companies are afraid of offending China. American officials are afraid of offending China. We are adopting Chinese norms on issues such as free speech and basic disagreements with the government of China.

We're living in the early stages of a future that is the direct consequence of poor public policy over the last couple of generations. We are not even aware of that....

Right now, we are witnessing a non‑stop continuous transfer of power to a country that is serious about using that power. This is China's moment. Take it as someone who grew up, in large part, in a great power in decline. There's no real explicit handover day. People, in hindsight, expect to pinpoint the day that the baton was passed.... My great worry is that actually, the transfer to China has already happened. The baton has already been passed. We just haven't formally acknowledged that yet.

I'll say it straight out loud. I do not think that Joe Biden "won the election." I don't think it is a question of "widespread fraud." I think the way the system works with the Electoral College, you only need actually to spread fraud in six key cities in six key states.

I would like some of these genius jurists, including [US Supreme Court Chief Justice] Mr. Roberts and his colleagues, to then give us a figure on what is the acceptable level of fraud in American elections. Denmark, in its history, has never actually had a plausible accusation of any kind of electoral fraud. As we know, in the United States, in cities like Philadelphia, this is a tradition that has long roots and goes back 150 years.

The fact that you're rampaging around the Confederate general while wearing shoes made by child labor somehow does not impact on your moral virtue at all.

We are the civilization that built the modern world. If you do not like us, we can go back to what it was 500 years ago. Basically, the world functions because of the world we built.

I take Iran seriously. Not so much because of the Iranians, but because of the promises and the expectations in places like Sudan that Iranian nuclear technology will basically be shared with some of the most lethal basket-case states on Earth. Iran is in some sense like Russia and China. These are all, in a certain sense, great civilizations that have become perversions of themselves in a relatively short time.

Not a lot went up during Angst Week.

Yeah… not many people submitted things for us to post. I (Mod Penguin) was writing something to post but I ended up getting stuck on it and that week got kinda rough for me so I scrapped it… I kinda blame some poor planning as well. I thought it might be cool to line up an angst week with my Birthday (since Angst is my specialty) but I failed to realize that most people would be starting school that week an likely unable to participate… Again, I take full blame for that.

Almost 90% of our content is user submitted… so if we hit a lull there isn’t too much we can do. We try to dig up old submissions on the occasion but a lot of them are from before we were mods and it’s kinda hard to remember the context. We might do a full Inbox clean-out to make room for newer submissions and salvage what we can.

We’ve had a bit of a content lull in general… Personally, I blame the extreme hiatuses and general lack of news for regarding new SU episodes on CN’s part. Granted, the Hiatus will always be a part of the entertainment industry, and CN is always 3rd behind Nick and Disney. But in terms of keeping the SU flame alive: most we’ve had are a few podcasts with the cast/crew on ITunes and the occasional teaser or Meme from their social media plugs. 

Another part is in due to Controversies with certain youtubers… Pe//wDie//Pi/e and J/on//Tro//n in the last year were under heavy fire because of outright racist and anti-Semitic statements. We didn’t make any real statements on them because the truth was we didn’t know exactly what to do. We weren’t sure if we could remove them because these two in particular took the rolls of two characters who’s equivalents are very important in SU. And if we did remove them we’d have to shift things around and find other youtubers to replace them as well. And if THOSE guys did something bad it’d be phase-1 all over again. (Which is the main issue we get with these sorts of things and the problem we have to face with having an AU based around real-life people).

We also had the issue of past content created for these characters, which personally I don’t think we’ll remove them (AND WE HAVE NO PLANS TO) because it’d be censoring the blog’s history and hey, history has it’s faults… It’d be worse to erase the bad parts and pretend they never happened than to acknowledge that they were a part of the story and learn from them.

Though, I think I speak for us when I say that we should have definitely been better at addressing the things that happened than to wait for them to blow over, and on behalf of all the mods: We apologize. We do not stand with anything these two have done or said. We’re just in a bit of a bind trying to figure out what exactly to do. This is also why we’ve more hesitant about asks regarding adding certain youtubers/groups (A big one being the O//n/ey-Plays group, who… aren’t really the best in regards to LGBT or Racial problems and we aren’t too keen on adding them in when they have that already under their belt… We didn’t really have much of a choice with Matt/Ryan but they’ve seemed to have mellowed out since joining Grumps so maybe those two have seen the error of their ways… but we can’t say the same for On//e/y and his friends)

TL,DR: We have some management things we need to address/adjust/fix… We plan to do so once we figure something out.

Same thing happened with the Attack On Titan fandom, A large majority who only watched the anime and couldn’t access or didn’t want to read the manga moved on in what ended up being a 4 ½ YEAR hiatus… TV animation, especially story driven and action based shows that cost more to produce, isn’t as financially successful on cable today.

DVDs/Blu-rays are dying out to the digital market, so putting out every episode online where viewers can pay to watch them at anytime and at their own pace is the better for the company’s finances. That’s why Voltron: LD does so well and is booming in popularity… more people have Netflix today than they do Cable. Plus, fans who just outright purchase a show only have to worry about regular 6-month to 1 Year hiatuses before getting an entire season dumped out in a day… Sometimes even Less than that.

Resolution

Back in January, I made a list of New Year’s Resolutions. (Is this considered cliche? Have we all collectively decided that none of us will actually stick to these commitments?) Well, I decided I needed a change. I found that I had let my usual hobbies fall by the wayside in favor of drooling in front of a screen. I wasn’t feeling satisfied, productive, creative, or fulfilled.  

I found the entry in my journal. Here’s the list. Please take note of my exquisite penmanship. 

Keeping to the list is coming along...decently. For example, I’m not a vegan, though I have cut out some dairy. (My long-term relationship with Kraft Mac n’ Cheese continues.) In my mind I closely associate my goal of veganism with my aspiration to eliminate junk food, because the only junk food I generally still indulge in is chocolate, ice cream, and pizza. I still drink coffee, but I hate that I am dependent on it. If I don’t have my morning coffee, I become stupid, impatient, and grumpy by late afternoon. A drink should not have that kind of power over me. Every few months I gradually reduce my caffeine levels down to decaf coffee or decaf tea, but I inevitably fall of the wagon. 

One bright spot has been the daily reading, which has been consistent since January. I’ve knocked back several books, and I’m working through a stack of New Yorkers that have piled up. Goodreads has been useful in tracking my books. I have a bad habit of browsing the internet with my morning coffee and when I’m lounging around before bed each night. Lately I have made an effort to replace my laptop with a book, with some success. 

Most of my leisure time in January was spent cooking up some posts for the new blog. I’m not a good writer but I do enjoy the challenge of it. But I am also a slow writer, and often I find myself, after five or six hours of working on a post, asking myself if the final piece was worth the time. (In fact, I’m making an effort to speed up my pace. As I write this I have set a timer for one hour in which I hope to complete this post.) 

Ultimately, I have done okay with my resolutions. There’s a lot of room for improvement. You may notice that I made special note of “Practice as much as possible.” Because while I have committed more time each day to things like reading and writing, there remained a glaring omission: guitar! 

I love playing guitar! But considering how long I have been playing, I’m not nearly as good as I should be. For several years now, I’ve been content to just “noodle” whenever I pick up the instrument. Noodling is just the mindless act of playing licks and riffs that come easy to you. It’s a common trap for guitar players, and I would often noodle while browsing the web and watching Youtube videos. 

Over the winter I read a book by Cal Newport called “Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World.” It covers several topics, but mostly it’s about how some people come to master extremely difficult skills in a very short span of time. 

I’ll spare you the detail, but here’s how you become a master at something:

High Quality Work = Time Spent x Intensity of Focus

Work for extended periods of time on a single task with full concentration and free from distraction

Experts are produced by intensely focused practice. And this can be applied to anything: learning piano, a computer language, skateboarding, chemistry, juggling, history, or, of course, the skill of writing itself. You have to put in the hours, and they have to be good, productive hours. There is evidence to show how even brief distractions or interruptions will cause your brain to require much longer time to  learn the intended work. 

So, tired of being a lousy guitar player, I’ve restructured my approach to guitar. I compiled a list of fun, but challenging songs to work on. (Current projects include, among others: Interval’s “I’m Awake,” CHON’s “Bubble Dream” and “Puddle.” Songs like “Always Focused” by Tiny Moving Parts have improved my tapping.)

I no longer check my phone or the web when I sit down to practice. I use a stopwatch to track my hours each day. At the end of each day I mark my productive hours on an Excel sheet. Here’s a graph of my time thus far. 

My goal is to practice at least 8 hours a day, but as you can see, I will need to step up my efforts before I can achieve that. 

Still, I have seen results already. If you watch this clip of the song “Dew” by CHON, you’ll see the guy on the right -Erick- doing some fancy tapping maneuvers. Boy, when I first sat down to learn that, I had to slow the song down to a crawl to even hope of coordinating my hands and land the notes. But as of last night, I can now play the song at full speed, and decently cleanly! I never thought I’d be able to play this part. 

I also want to talk about something that I fully acknowledge will sound like (and likely is) complete bullshit, but here it is: I’ve conjured up this idea that maybe I can, like, re-wire my brain to crave playing guitar in the way that I currently crave internet use. This is rooted in the idea that I want to replace one addictive habit (internet use) with a new one (guitar). I mean, I think back to 8th grade when I first started playing, and how for the first few years I had no laptop of my own and virtually no internet or computer access. But my playing improved pretty quickly back then, in part, I believe, because there were far fewer distractions in my daily life that would impede my learning of this skill. My hope these days is to replicate that productive environment. I’m trying to eliminate from my daily life anything that might prevent me from engaging in deep work toward the guitar. This mostly means cutting out shallow/superficial internet use and not checking my phone (I’ve removed all social media apps except snapchat). But I’m also wondering what would happen if I cut out something like sugar from my diet. Because I truly find sugar to be addictive as well, and on days that I don’t have any, I just feel...antsy. And if my brain is craving something besides guitar, I might find myself playing less. It’s a junk theory, I know. I will say this, though: as I’ve reduced my internet use, I find that my attention span in regards to reading has greatly improved, and I find myself feeling less scatter-brained, and I sometimes wonder if my attention span and short-term memory have recovered some. Does a reduction in internet use have positive impacts on things like concentration and memory? I’d be curious what evidence exists on this topic.

I know this all sounds silly, but it is an idea I find pretty fascinating. And to be fair, Newport in “Deep Work” does discuss some evidence to suggest that constant screen time has caused our attention spans to take a hit. I can only speak for myself, and I do believe my shift in priorities has had positive impacts on my sense of well-being. So...yay!

This is a long-winded way of explaining why I haven’t been blogging every week. My priorities have shifted to guitar. But if I can structure my time more intelligently, I can easily find the time to write for even one or two hours a week.

I want out.

Out of the Matrix. Out of myself. I don't want to be tracked all the time. I don't want a profile being compiled of everything I buy, everywhere I go, every website I visit...

So I get a new laptop. One not connected to my name. I buy it in a different city. But then does that mean I can only use it in the city I bought it? I bring it back to my home city. I want to go online at one of my favorite cafes, but I realize that would make it easier to deduce whose laptop it is. Especially with how often I use it. I start to mix it up. I frequent cafes I've never been to. I spend more time in cities I would never want to be in. Yeah, that'll throw them off...

I never make a new account with my real name. Pseudonyms only. I never refer to accounts I've used before. I never log back in to Facebook. I tread lightly when it comes to looking up stuff I used to look up so it's not too obvious who I am, based on what types of searches I make. Then, one day, I make a mistake... Damn! I just visited a part of a little known website that only I would go to. Or I searched for a hashtag that only I used before. Too obvious. Start over.

I get an old used laptop from a homeless homie. Not sure if that's secure enough, since he's not a stranger - there's still a breadcrumb trail back to me. Not really, though. What am I so worried about? That they'll corner him in an interrogation center to find out who he gave the laptop to? For what it's worth, our friendship is off the record. We were never friends on Facebook. He doesn't know my last name. It's hard to know what's irrationally paranoid and what's just rational paranoia in an age of totalitarian surveillance.

I can't risk making the same mistake again if I have to buy a new laptop every time, just to feel secure in my anonymity. I start looking into how I can better cover my tracks. I wipe the computer and install a secure Linux operating system. Not the most popular one, though... you never know when a big mainstream project could get infiltrated and compromised. Of course, all these precautions are pointless if everything I'm doing is still being tracked online. Even without making any new accounts to be tracked, all my browsing history is probably passing through the N$As servers. Even if it's not tied to my irl identity, they could still build a profile of all my pseudonyms and browsing history. A statistical analysis of what YouTube videos I'm watching could be enough to make an educated guess at who I am just based on my music tastes...

So I started using TOR-browser whenever possible, for almost all my browsing needs. Again, I avoid old accounts. All new accounts. All new pseudonyms. All new hashtags. Damn, it's like I have to erase my whole existence and start over every time I mess up. New projects. New websites. I forget what projects I was working on two identities ago. How long have I been doing this? How many people have I been? Am I getting anywhere? Isn't this fruitless run-around exactly what the N$A wants? I feel like I'm just spinning my wheels..

The more I learn about security, the less secure I feel. The more you know, the more you know you don't know. The TOR-browser is sweet, but it has been compromised in the past. But it's fine now, right? But it could always happen again... But it's pretty safe, it gets audited by third parties, right? But anything can be compromised, so how can I trust the audit? But no, I'm being too paranoid again. My digital footprint is so small... It's not like I'm running the next silk road. Besides, bit torrents are still going strong, despite the fact it's hard/impossible to avoid being tracked when you use them (as a function of how bit-torrent works).

I remind myself that all I really need to do is stick to best practices and forget about being perfect. I'm not doing anything illegal, anyways... TOR-browser on a secure Linux system should be enough...

But I can't help it, and I start to pick up superstitions from the Swarm. The government can open their own TOR exit nodes, and if they open enough of them, they can start to get a sense of who is doing what in the TOR network. Theoretically. So I start double-checking where my first three connection hops are. The rumor is that if all your TOR hops keep coming out of the USA then the network could be compromised. But that doesn't even make sense... you really think the same N$A who tramples on everyone's constitutional rights is going to be too inundated with legal beaurocracy to just open exit nodes out of foreign countries when they need to? You really think that's above and beyond their capacity? But that doesn't help, now I just feel less sure of my anonymity even if the connections aren't from the USA.

As I learn more about TOR, I realize my footprint isn't nearly as small as I thought. There are holes in my security everywhere. Since anyone can open an exit node, and your connection must go out an exit node any time you access a website that doesn't end in ".onion", I might be giving up my passwords every time I log in. Well, at least I'm using accounts that are relatively unrelated to my irl identity. These are mostly throwaway accounts, anyways. Then I learn about the potential of an attack using end-to-end statistical analysis of bandwidth. Although IP addresses and internet traffic are masked, you can see when someone is using TOR, and you can see how much bandwidth they use. Enough to deduce which TOR connection is connected to which websites if the bandwidth at both ends are closely monitored. (Again, ".onion" websites are safer because your connection won't go through an exit node, so there is no "other end" to match your bandwidth).

On top of it all, my MAC address is probably attached to everything I'm doing... TOR hides the internet traffic, but I bet the N$A still builds bandwidth profiles for every MAC address just in case they can connect the dots at a later date. (That's the address embedded in your hardware, the physical address).

At this point, I start to regret knowing so much about how these technologies work. I know plenty of people who continue to speak freely online, as if there were no surveillance at all. Of course, they also don't question the status quo as much, or as directly. My argument is usually that the surveillance could be influencing them on a subconscious level. It's not that they are so confident and enlightened that it doesn't bother them. Rather, they are simply unaware of the extent to which they are being silenced. But I have to admit, at times, I wonder how much more I could be getting done if I was naive to all of this.

Sometimes I even wonder if Edward Snowden was actually a part of this whole subconscious silencing agenda. A critical component of imposing this so-called chilling effect is to let people know they're being watched. Otherwise we could just continue organizing and resisting as if we weren't being watched. No wonder that news story managed to get paraded around mainstream media outlets, when so many bigger stories get completely censored out of existence. Perhaps it was all part of the plan to implement a panopticon-type of atmosphere where everyone watches themselves. (Note: whether Snowden played into this agenda on purpose or by accident is irrelevant.)

Finally, I start using Tails OS. Something tells me whonix/qubes would be even more secure, and less likely to get compromised, but I settled for Tails for now. It uses MAC spoofing by default, masking the MAC address with a fake MAC address. And the OS is hardened to the point that I don't have to worry so much about viruses and glitches on my own OS. Finally, I feel like I've got a decent setup. I use email addresses that I can access through a ".onion" website. I start frequenting more ".onion" websites to communicate with others, and recede even deeper into the world of the darkweb...

So then, with such a solid OS, I stop worrying about whether or not JavaScript is on... bad move! There's still so much more to uncover. For one thing, I realize that Tails is mostly funded by the government - which doesn't necessarily mean it has backdoors, because they use it themselves and wouldn't want to plant backdoors for their own enemies to use against them, but it is something to consider. Then I learned about "uxdt". Ultrasound-cross-device-tracking. Using ultrasound footprints in commercials and on websites, uxdt can be used to trigger smart phones to gather data about what commercials you've watched so they can continue bombarding you with the same ad on your smart phone. With JavaScript enabled in the TOR-browser, I risk coming across a website that triggers a smart phone to know what website I visited through TOR, which could be enough to backtrack through that TOR sessions activity and link it to me. Theoretically. So I start turning off JavaScript again, or at least turning off the sound on my computer... I hope that works...

My point is... in a world where anonymity was once the default for all Internet usage, these days it seems to be slipping away from me... Perhaps this Tumblr will be my final resting place, to hang my hat, and give up the chase. Not a place to be silent, but a place to speak my mind, despite the risk. A place for all my anonymous loose ends to synthesize into a single identity, for better or for worse. Not that I will quit my anonymous projects altogether, but that I will accept my fate that I may never perfect a completely decentralized, untrackable, unknowable online presence... Even now Skynet is no doubt scanning my words, and building a profile of this pseudonym, perhaps even using stylemetry to figure out my irl identity. But to remain entirely in the dark web doesn't seem like a particularly effective way to spread information and expand consciousness, either, because of the catch-22 that the very people who need to hear more about this kind of stuff are the ones who aren't on the darkweb.

In my lifetime, I've seen technology progress by leaps and bounds. But for whom? And to what end? Must Skynet come to fruition, despite all our warnings throughout the years?
