Could sonic just run back to past? He did it before in sonic cd
Unserious answer:
Actual answer:
Because 1, that defeats the purpose of the exploration! If the problem is solved immediately, where's the story? And 2: CD is one of the games I have not played, but I've been informed that the time travel mechanic therein was isolated to Little Planet and the associated places. Something to do with Time Stones, which I'm not employing here. Just rings, Chaos Emeralds, and a little dose of reality destabilization. You know, normal things!
(Thank you!)

Mike assumed that Will brought the painting with him because at some point later they were going to presumably meet up with the girl it was intended for…
Here are Mike’s responses to El as they walk through the airport after reuniting.
What, really? Burritos for breakfast?
Yeah no, I… I trust you. It’s just, you know, a little weird.
Rink-O-Mania, okay. What’s Rink-O-Mania?
Okay that sounds awesome— are your friends gonna meet us there?
Mike asks El a few questions, but he’s basically just repeating what she said right back to her, without really adding anything beyond that. But, the last question feels like one that’s genuinely on his mind, not just him trying to fill the ‘awkward’ silence, but what he actually wants an answer to.
Will: Angela??
Mike: 🫣😑
El: You’ll meet them. I promise. Just not today. I want today to be about me and you.
Mike: 😁😌
Dude was psyched he didn’t have to witness Will giving Angela the painting in-person.
But as the day progresses, he’s noticing that Will is upset and annoyed, and he assumes it’s bc they’re not meeting up with Angela. THAT’S what initially sabotaged the day for Mike; Will moping around bc of some girl, instead of catching up with him.
Then Angela shows up at Rink-O-Mania and Mike is just… so distracted by the fact that this is happening, that he doesn’t even pick up on the red flags going on between Angela and El. He has to physically look away from their direction altogether when Will looks (longingly, from mike’s pov) at her as they skate away.
Then later he finds out Angela probably wasn’t the girl who Will’s painting was intended for, but in fact just one of El’s bullies. And he missed all the signs bc he was so hyper-focused on Will, which is why he almost takes it out on him at first. But then he’s confronted with the fact that from Will’s perspective, it was Mike who was acting weird and ignoring him, which was actually the true reason behind Will’s behavior all day. And this realization that Will was miserable the whole time, not because he was thinking about some girl, but actually bc he felt like a third wheel having to sit through El lying to him all day, is what turns Mike into a self-pitying idiot.
That’s why on the way back to the Byers, he looks over at Will very emotionally. That’s why he makes that negative comment towards El at dinner, only to sit there and wallow without any feeling behind his eyes. Because he’s coming to the realization that his lack of honesty with both of them, and himself, is what’s got them all in this mess in the first place.
