It isn’t romance and erotic love (or even having a specific Day for it) that I have a problem with. It’s the heteronormativity leading up to it. The constant rubbing it in “well I have a [partner(s)/lover(s)] and you don’t!” and “well MY friends gave ME balloons and flowers!” that is really, really grating. It’s the Pressure to plan or anticipate a Special Dinner or Steamy Evening, or if someone’s crush lover will/won’t Pop The Question (and having the entire day either ruined by that anticipation or Result.) It’s the whiny allos if they’re Alone (Again) on that day...and reinforcing that there’s something Wrong with not having a lover or choosing to celebrate with platonic and familial loved ones instead.
It’s not the Day. It’s not even the Loves getting promoted. It’s the attitudes surrounding all of it.
Like. Please. Go be tooth-rottingly cute with your friends and/or partner(s)/lover(s). Especially with us still in a pandemic. (Which, I guess this is harder to do with friends unless you’re already housemates?) Go Treat Yourself if you’re happily single or honestly not wanting to be alone (and feeling it harder than usual on that specific day.)
Just don’t be THAT Asshole about it.
