“No promises. Not really, it’s inevitable.”
I’ve been wanting to draw Record Red Rin for a really long time so I’m glad I actually finished this! Not really sure why I wanted to make her a vampire or whatever but I really like how this turned out considering my limited knowledge of all things art

I have decided that Regina Spektor’s “Samson” is about loving someone coming to terms with their transmasculinity.
Samson doesn’t get a pronoun or name until after the speaker says, “Your hair was long when we first met”. The first things we learn about the speaker and the subject are of a love the preceded change and that the truth of their story is obscured in someway— and that his hair was long once.
My favorite part is the bridge. “I cut his hair myself one night/ a pair of dull scissors in the yellow light/ and he told me that I’d done alright/ and kissed me til the morning light”. It rules, first of all, but it also establishes a sense that Samson wanted this, the short hair and the broken covenant (which fits into “the Bible didn’t mention us”, because the Bible story misunderstands and misrepresents them.)
Later in the song, Spector sings “we couldn’t bring the columns down”, which is how Samson dies in the biblical narrative (according to Wikipedia). In this version, it is possible to imagine that Samson wasn’t tricked into breaking his covenant and doesn’t end up dying to defeat the Philistines— he eats a slice of wonderbread, returns to his lover, and is forgotten by time. Independent of a trans reading, there is an implication of defying fate in the song obv
Anyway I like to imagine this very emotional songs captures a moment in transition through the eyes of a supportive lover. “You are my sweetest downfall, I loved you first” is such a beautiful statement of commitment to love in defiance expectations and promises.
