2020 Creator Wrap

2020 Creator Wrap: Favorite Works

Okay, okay, I know I’m late with this but the incredibly sweet @irolltwenties and the utterly delightful @anthrobrat were both kind enough to me in this bad boy and it seems really fun, so here we are!

Rules: it’s time to love yourselves! choose your 5 (or so) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought to the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!

According to my AO3 statistics page, I wrote just over 100K of fiction this year, across 17 different fandoms, a few of which won’t actually go live until after the New Year because they’re part of a gifting collection that hasn’t been revealed yet... Anyway, I picked my faves for a variety of reasons, listed briefly after each link. If you have any questions about works I’ve shared (or just in general) feel free to ask!

1. Front Row at the Gongshow

The Pacific, 16K, Rated G Andrew ‘Ack Ack’ Haldane/Edward ‘Hillbilly’ Jones

Aside from being the longest completed work I produced this year, this is also the first fic I’ve ever written using the “found document” format. While there are parts of it I feel really conflicted about, I’m still incredibly proud of it and think it’s one of the better fic I’ve written...possibly ever. Which is doubly funny because I don’t usually do modern AUs of period fiction, but the hockey angle was enough to tempt and lo, here we are, lol.

[Excerpt from Deadspin]

"You all remember Eddie Jones, right? The corn-fed captain of the New Orleans Rougarou so wholesome he belongs on a box of Malt-O-Meal? The gentleman bruiser who spends his free time playing country tunes for kids with cancer?

Our favorite dapper D-man led his team to 97 points last night in a shut-out victory against the Los Angeles Kings, clinching a playoff spot for the first time in franchise history. Oh! And he also got caught on camera at the after-party, sucking face. WITH A DUDE."

2. Entremets

Hannibal, 8K, Rated E Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter

I have...so many Hannibal fic that I’ve started writing and haven’t finished because all my ideas lead to long plotty epics and also big name fandoms scare me. I did this one up for Eat, Drink, & Make Merry, and I’m really, really pleased with the way it turned out, considering it was my first foray into establishing new character voices and also a successful exercise in writing explicit content, which can be a bit of an Ordeal for me, so overall I’m incredibly happy with it. Plus! My deep and abiding love of writing characters cooking/eating/otherwise dealing with food finally paid off!

“The pâté was supposed to be more of a gesture,” Will explains, spreading a golden sliver of honeycomb out across a slice of sopressata with the blade of his pocket knife. “You don’t actually have to eat it. I’m not even sure if it’s any good.” He smears a healthy dollop of chȇvre across his meat-and-honey concoction and pops the whole thing into his mouth without ceremony.

“What better method exists by which to convey one’s appreciation of a gesture than to indulge it?”

3. An Ode to Matty Big-Time

The Good Place, 2K, Rated T Jason Mendoza/Original Male Characters, Pillboi

This one was actually a request made by my very dear @thesummoningdark, who wanted to see some bisexual Jason per that one fantastic Tumblr post about how everyone in TGP should be bi, and I’m really, really proud of the way it turned out. I love writing comedy and I very rarely get to lean into it as hard as I’d like, so delving into the whole wild craziness of Jacksonville, as explained in the show was really fun. I also love writing original characters, and this was a great excuse to indulge.

“We probably shouldn’t do any butt stuff,” Jason warns, with as much gravitas as he can muster. “I had two of Stupid Nick’s Disaster Buckets when I got here.”

“Yeah, your face is still kinda orange,” Mateo agrees fondly, bringing his other hand up to brush his thumb over Jason’s lower lip. It stirs a little frisson of heat in his belly that Jason is 68% sure isn’t just indigestion. “No chemical burns, though, so I think you came out on top.”

4. This and Who I Used to Be

The Tick (2017), 3K, Rated G Arthur Everest/Superian

Another new fandom I haven’t written in before, this was a fill for the Rare Male Slash Exchange that turned me on to a pairing I’d never even thought of before I wrote it and am now low-key obsessed with. It is also, to date, the ONLY Arthur/Superian fic on AO3 at all, which is a cool weird honor and fairly indicative of my life’s goal to eventually write my way into smaller and smaller fandoms until I come out the other side with original works. It was really fun to explore these characters, and to figure out some world-building for Superian’s backstory that fit within the tone and established canon of the extant Amazon!Tick universe. Also featuring an original character that nobody asked for but I’ve come to love unconditionally.

Arthur glances down to where Superian has one cheek pressed against his shoulder, humming something off-key and unintelligible with his eyes closed. Arthur sighs. “Let’s get you inside.”

He hauls Superian in until he can prop him against the wall while he shuts and locks the door behind him. When he looks back over, Superian is smiling at him, soft and lazy. He swings a finger in Arthur’s direction, a broad, sloppy motion, and announces, “I knew you’d say yes.”

“Technically I said fine,” Arthur rebuts. He gestures down the hallway toward the kitchen—which leads on to the bedroom, as Superian well knows—and sighs, “Come on. I don’t know what those handcuffs did to you, but you should probably lie down and have a glass of water or something.”

5. Rain in Its Season

Band of Brothers, 12K, Rated G Edward ‘Babe’ Heffron/John Julian

Oh boy. What to say about this one. It’s maybe not as polished as I might have preferred, but I feel that way about mostly everything I write and at the end of the day I do really love what I managed to do with this piece. Written for the Heavy Artillery Rare Pair Exchange, I managed to lean heavily into both my love for needlessly granular period research and original characters, which are abundant herein. Frankly, based on the very little we see of him in the show, Julian himself is practically an OC, but I digress. This was another of the longer pieces I’ve ever finished and I’m proud of it even if I’d’ve liked to write another 15K or so, time constraints notwithstanding.

“Tell me. Please. Why’re you here?”

Babe flinched, gaze dropping to the floor. His heart was a raw, swollen welt in his chest. He swallowed and licked his lips, slow and pained.

“Come on, Julian,” he rasped, low and quiet. “You know why.” He laughed, soft and hoarse, and shook his head, once. When he looked back up, Julian had taken a careful step into the center of the room. His eyes were very dark, his mouth very red, hope and fear warring in his every feature. Babe fisted his fingers in the cotton sheet underneath him, halfway to pleading as he insisted, “You gotta know.”

Julian sighed and came over to hover at the edge of the bed. Babe spread his legs to accommodate the intrusion.

“That was - ” Julian started. His voice failed midway through the protest, and he swallowed, took a breath, and regrouped at a lower volume. “You said that was just buddies, what we did over there. That it didn’t count. That you didn’t want it to.”

The TL;DR of this all being that while I didn’t write as much I wanted to this year in terms of volume, I feel like my quality has been improving consistently and hope it continues to do so into 2021 while I try to finish out some of my years-long WIPs and get into longer completed pieces.

anna’s fic recs: june 2019 [winterhawk edition]

i accidentally deleted all of the text for this post and was only able to recover the first two, but i tried to remember what i wrote before.

again, these are from fics that i read in june 2019, not ones that necessarily were posted then. (i honestly wish i could rec all the fics i read, but i managed to keep it at eight this time)

1. Liminal Spaces by thepartyresponsible (@thepartyresponsible) (Rated M, 20k)

Summary: “Clint,” Steve says, and it’s that same no-bullshit, do-or-die, I really, really mean it voice he used to trot out in the last few innings of close games in high school. “Bucky’s not gonna fly. He’s not going to drive himself. He can’t— I need you to drive him here.”

“Oh, fuck you,” Clint says, and hangs up.

My review: listen, i have thought about this fic at least once a day since i read it because i love it that much. the plotting of it is so good with how the backstory is woven throughout with increasing detail in an amazing way. it’s about small towns and road trips and shared trauma and meeting people where they’re at and it holds a very special place in my heart. if you haven’t read it, go read it immediately. if you have read it, go read it again.

2. tell me who my mouth was made for by 1000_directions (@1000-directions) (Rated M, 1.5k)

Summary: Clint’s never moved slowly, not one moment of his life. He’s been reckless as long as he can remember, figuring it all out after the fact. He’s never been careful. But Bucky kisses him like he matters, and it changes him. He’s been changing.

“I just want to feel you inside me,” Clint whispers, and it feels like the biggest confession of his life, to need something so fucking badly from someone else and to let them know it.

My review: steph put out like a million amazing fics in the month of june, but this one by far stuck with me the most. when i first read it, i immediately had to go back and re-read it. the way these two love each other actually makes my heart hurt. i always love the way she writes established relationships and how much care her characters have for each other and this is it in top, top form. oh, and also, as a bonus, it’s really hot. EDIT: i just re-read this and i forgot how DREAMY it is. it literally feels like you are floating on a cloud of love and intimacy and I WANT TO CRYYYYY.

3. Ain’t That a Kick in the Head by Finely Honed (@finely-honed) (Rated E, 115k)

Summary: “That guy out there? Lovin’ him is the best part of being alive, Steve. We both know I can be just as stubborn, and maybe twice as oblivious as you. I wanted Clint so bad, for so long, but I was all turned around, and lying to myself, makin’ excuses as to how it was some crazy side effect of spending so much time together. But the truth was? I was scared. It was too big, so I tried like hell to hide from the truth, right up until I went and got blown up. Then it was total fuckin’ clarity time.”

Back before Steve adopted Peter, or Tony walked into SHIELD Tattoo and upended Steve's world, Bucky almost died in Clint's arms. This is the story of what happened after.

Takes place 5 ½ years before Deep in the Heart of Me. While reading that beast will provide a lot of context into the universe, I'm pretty sure this would still make sense solo.

My review: i loved DITHOM so much, so I knew that this was going to be freaking amazing and OH MY GOD, it definitely was. it tackles the really difficult realities of learning to adjust to life with a newfound disability and coping with PTSD symptoms, while still maintaining a lot of humor and love throughout the story. the characters all just feel so real and like they have rich backstories and futures that go beyond what we see here and that’s really great. the secondary characters are also amazing and i love the theme of found family. Bucky and Steve as brothers is always a favorite of mine and this take on it is great because it’s about Bucky learning how to help Steve without sacrificing his own happiness. EVERYONE IS WONDERFULLY FLAWED BUT DOING THEIR BEST. i dunno, i could say a million things about this fic and still have more to say.

4. Lost & Found by mariana_oconnor (@mariana-oconnor) (Rated M, 90k)

Summary: Clint Barton’s got a bag full of stolen money and a burning desire to stay under the radar. His old friends in the Carnival will be looking for him and they sure as hell won’t be happy. In a desperate attempt to stay off their radar, he ends up in Timely, a small town so far off the beaten track he’s surprised he even found it, and waits for Barney to comes and get him. Because Barney will be coming. Clint knows he will.

But there's something about the town. Maybe it's the strange wolf that watches him from the trees, and the way people finish conversations when he enters a room. Or it could be the bartender, Bucky, who decided to hate him on sight. Something’s going on in this small town, and Clint’s not sure if he’s jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire.

My review: i’m not typically into werewolf fics but i AM into grumpy bucky and this fic had it in SPADES. again, all of the characters here are so well developed that it makes for a really great story. like liminal spaces, it also has such a great small town feel and creates this atmosphere where it feels like you really know everyone and what they are about and i LOVE that. this clint is so compassionate and wonderful, too, and i love his relationship with werewolf!bucky in particular <3 it’s a great story about meeting people where they are at and the ending is super great!

5. could never want for more when you’re here by nightwideopen (@nightwideopen) (Rated T, 5.5k)

Summary: “You know I love you, right?”

The casual way Clint lets the declaration loose doesn’t blindside Bucky as much as he thought it would. And maybe Clint means it mostly platonically but his eyes are shining and Bucky really doesn’t care. He loves him, too.

It’s easy. It’s inevitable. It’s like breathing.

My review: ACE CLINT!!!!!! i was so excited to see someone write an ace!clint fic, especially during pride month, and this one is so good! it’s so, so soft and i love the way that bucky and clint navigate intimacy in a way that honors their boundaries. bucky has some insecurities and sometimes they don’t communicate well but at the end of the day, they are so gentle with each other and really just want to give each other what they want and it’s SO LOVELY.

6. Pretty When You Cry by dr_girlfriend (@drgrlfriend) (Rated E, 3.5k)

Summary: “Someone hurt you, Clint?”

It’s so surprising Clint almost spills his drink on the way to his mouth. Maybe not so much the question, because much as he’s trying to hide it Clint probably does look beat to hell, but more the soft, gentle way the guy asks it. Like he really cares about the answer. Cares about Clint.

For a moment Clint feels himself teetering on the edge — the horrors of the mission clogging up his throat as if they are going to come spilling out in a tearful confession to the first fucking stranger who’d asked.

He claws it back, biting his tongue hard to keep it still. He smiles instead, even though he’s sure the smile comes out a little twisted.

“Not as much as I hurt ‘em back,” he finally says, and that’s just enough truth to settle his stomach a little.

Bucky nods as if that’s good enough for him, and takes a long, thoughtful pull of his beer. Clint watches his throat work, the way those plush lips wrap around the bottle. He hopes to hell he hasn’t blown this already.

Bucky wipes his mouth with the back of his hand and sets his empty bottle deliberately on the bar. “Okay,” he says. “You got a place?”

My review: the MFD crymaxer prompt graced us with some wonderfully hot yet emotional fics and this is absolutely 100% one of them. this is another fic about meeting people where they are at and accepting them for who they are, and it’s really beautiful. i love how both of them are kind of rough around the edges but are also really soft with each other. also, it’s SMOKING hot, so that’s an added bonus.

7. if god is in the lens by shatteredhourglass (@shatteredhourglass) (Rated E, 40k)

Summary: The Asset pauses. He remembers the first few days after dragging St- dragging Captain America out of the water, the aimless emptiness that had filled him, with no mission and no knowledge of what to do next. He’d spent a week staring at the peeling wallpaper in a motel. There had been butterflies patterned on it. He hadn’t known what direction to go in next, because he was (is) scared of Captain America, and he didn’t want anything to do with Hydra, and he’d just… stopped. That’s when he realizes Barton isn’t going to move unless he gives the man a reason to move, something to do that isn’t related to a past he can’t remember or the threat of imminent death. (It’s been burned out of him, the Asset can relate.)

A mission.

He's leaning on the button to the microphone before he thinks about it. “Come with me and you can kill more of them.”

My review: i LOVE a good recovery arc and this one has TWO! it’s two murderbros learning how to be human again and falling in love along the way (WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT???). i really enjoyed all of the plotting and the action in this fic, too. i felt like i was on the edge of my seat all the way til the end, trying to figure out what the characters were going to do. just really good stuff here!!!

8. bent by jstabe (@jstabe) (Rated E, 3k)

Summary: “My name is James Buchanan Barnes.”

He felt Clint’s lips curl up where they were resting at his temple. “Yes.”

“I am an Avenger.” Which was frankly ridiculous and impossible to believe sometimes, but it was true so it went on the list.

My review: SOFT BOYFRIENDS, SOFT BOYFRIENDS, SOFT BOYFRIENDS! i love everything about this fic. as you can see by this list, i love soft boys who are working through trauma together and this is it!!!! they are so freaking domestic and lovely and they make each other laugh and they care about each other so much that it makes my heart want to explode. THEY HAVE A HEATED MATTRESS TOPPER BECAUSE BUCKY GETS COLD. I LOVE THEM.

Suits: What Comes Next?

What can Suits do next, in 7b and 8a and beyond? It’s a question I’ve been thinking about for a while, and while I’ve explored it in fic I think it’s about time I do a proper meta post. Strap in for lots of weird predictions about how Suits can go on, and what the potential pitfalls of each route are.

TLDR: Suits is probably but not definitely doomed. Their safest option, in my opinion, is to decisively break up Donna and Harvey in 7b, give Harvey an absolutely awful time through 8a (maybe 7b and 8b too?), and double down on another ship entirely. This is not their only option; Darvey is still on the table.

Word count: ~3K

Question 1: How can they handle Mike and Rachel’s departure?

First things first, now that Mike’s leaving, the powers that be are losing the core relationship of the show. Assuming the reason Mike’s leaving is that he and Rachel got a better job/life opportunity elsewhere (as opposed to, say, the two of them get killed off), there are two options here:

1.) Brush over Mike and Rachel’s departure as a happy, happy event for everyone involved. The remaining characters move on with their lives with minimal angst. Maybe a new sidekick (Alex? Donna? Louis? someone else new?) fills the Mike-sized hole in Harvey’s plot lines.

Pros: Patrick J. Adams described Suits as a fundamentally “aspirational” show. In his opinion the show can approach darkness, it cannot dwell there. This would allow the show to carry on with its typical plot lines without angst.

Cons: This may feel out of sync with the previous seasons. If everyone can pick up and move on without Mike in a heartbeat, then why were they so dedicated to keeping him around and protecting him for all this time? Also, now that two more members of the original core cast are leaving, Suits is at risk of having too few meaningful plots. Glossing over Mike’s departure would mean dropping a major source of potential drama.

2.) Dwell on the implications of Mike and Rachel’s departure. Harvey’s abandonment issues might come back to the forefront.

Pros: Drama. Tension. Sensible, in-character consequences over the loss of the Mike-Harvey relationship.

Cons: If the show dwells on Rachel and Mike’s departure, so will the audience. And if the audience is upset about the departure, they might end up alienated, sick of the reminders of what’s now missing. Also, as mentioned above, this show doesn’t like serious angst; it might be hard to strike the right tone.

Question 2: How to end 7b?

Patrick J. Adams has strongly hinted that the finale of 7b will include the Machel wedding. 7b is also intended to serve as a backdoor pilot for Jessica’s spin-off show. That’s all well and good, but what happens to our core remaining characters, Donna, Louis, and Harvey?

Suits knows the benefits of ending on a cliffhanger (or some sort of tantalizing promise of new conflict), they've done it every season except maybe 6. I think they have to do this again. Because they’ve now lost half their main cast, they’ll probably try to hook people more than ever and give them an incredibly compelling reason to tune back in. What sort of cliffhanger they might use depends on the answer to . . .

Question 3: What’s the driving tension of Season 8a?

(8b’s also important, of course, but I think it’ll be the ending of the series. And since I don’t have a great intuition for how this show can end without Mike, I won’t make detailed predictions. All I’ll say is that I think at least 2 out of 3, if not all 3, of the Donna-Louis-Harvey group will be happily and stably in love, and I think all three will achieve some level of personal growth. I predict that they’ll all be happy with their careers and that the firm will be doing well. Either that or the firm crashes, in which case Harvey probably throws up his hands and moves out of New York, lol.)

Okay, so fandom loves fluffy slice-of-life stories that don’t have conflict, but mainstream TV shows? Not so much. There ought to be a driving conflict that makes 8a run. I think Suits can have three major types of tension:

External Tension: A mostly-new set of characters invades and raises hell. Examples include the Danbury plot of 6a, the investment banking plot of 4a, and the failed Darby merger from 3.

Pros of external tension: So many options for drama.

Cons of external tension: Meh. Suits has done this a lot already, and how do you top the stakes of Danbury? What new threat can outside characters present that we haven’t already seen? If it’s just that “the firm’s in jeopardy again,” I think a lot of viewers will yawn, but the obvious ways of raising the stakes (disgruntled ex-client attempts murder, someone ends up in the hospital for multiple episodes, Louis makes good on the Daniel Hardman death threat, etc.) would potentially be too angsty and out of place.

Another potential issue is that the end of 7b would ideally introduce this new bunch of external troublemakers, and if 7b’s finale is already packed with the Machel wedding and Jessica’s pilot plots then that’ll be tough.

Old-Conflict-Resurfaces Tension: Oooh, this one could be fun. A decent way for Suits to go out (assuming Season 8 is the end) is to do a fabulous villain team-up. Maybe Daniel Hardman’s working with Travis Tanner, who’s being paid off by Charles Forstman, and so on. More broadly, if Suits can reach into its established rogues gallery and present some old threats as more menacing than ever and weave a credible yet surprising legal plot, that might be a way to go.

Pros: Lots of options for drama, though less than above. Potentially cleaner and more elegant, since Suits doesn’t need to introduce bunches of new settings and characters. If done well, it could viewers guessing all throughout, rethinking old episodes and searching their memories for clues to unravel every new mystery. All in all this could feel like a very fitting end for the show.

Cons: This may be very hard to pull off. It can tip one way and become boring, or the other and become absurd.

Internal Tension: My personal favorite. Something changes among our central trio, and they then generate a driving plot of their own free will.

Pros: Elegant. Minimal set-up (well, no, but the setup is all the character dynamics we’ve learned so well over the past seven seasons). A great way to propel meaningful character change and wrap up the central arcs. I think audiences will care about this tension more than any other kind, because it’s all about Donna, Harvey and Louis, and those central characters are what the general audience cares about most.

Cons: We’ve already seen a lot of Donna, Harvey and Louis. We’ve seen how they react in stressful situations. Pushing them to new limits is hard, there are few events that can still do it. The powers that be would have to be pretty damn careful to keep everyone in-character without just rehashing dramas we’ve already seen.

Question 4: Who is Samantha Wheeler?

For those who don’t know, Katherine Heigl is joining the main cast of Suits for Season 8. She’s playing Samantha Wheeler, a “talented new partner at Pearson Specter Litt who challenges the status quo and will either become the firm’s greatest ally or most powerful enemy.”

It’s possible that Samantha will come crashing in and become the one-woman generator of an “external tension” that drives Season 8a. I’m hard-pressed to come up with what’s so special about this character that she can cause such big waves, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Pros: New drama. New relationship dynamics. If she’s connected via backstory to one or more of the main characters (and she probably should be, otherwise the audience is at risk of just not caring about her), that could cause drama amidst the Donna-Louis-Harvey group. Also! She might provide new romance opportunities, and god knows Suits likes its love stories. If Darvey and Louis/Sheila are both definitively together by the end of 7, I think Samantha is even more likely to have a love interest.

Cons: Things are already changing a lot from 7 to 8. The audience is at risk of 1.) being confused, 2.) being bored because they’ve already seen too much like this, 3.) feeling alienated because this isn’t what they signed up for, and/or 4.) just not caring. Adding a brand-new main character may exacerbate these issues.

Question 5: WHAT HAPPENS TO DARVEY?!?!?!

The powers that be wrote themselves into an interesting corner with the 7a kiss. The Darvey tension’s been simmering for ages, but it’s finally been pushed so far that Donna and Harvey have to confront it. If the Darvey will-they-won’t-they dance isn’t finished by the end of 7, I think audiences will revolt.

The writers are devoting serious attention to the fallout the kiss; the consequences will propel plenty of 7b drama, and I won’t be surprised if Donna and Harvey spend 5.99 out of 6 episodes feuding. That said, by the time the season is over, the Darvey plot should be decided one way or the other to avoid the aforementioned audience revolt. Working under that assumption, there are two options . . .

1.) Darvey gets together in 7b.

I’m going to quote another Aaron (the namesake of Rick Sorkin?) discussing the long-time workplace romance of another fictional Donna: “They are in a tough spot . . . because she works for him. Besides, sexual and romantic tension is, to me, much more fun than taking the tension away by having the sex and romance.” And while I can’t find the article at the moment, I’ve seen a related quote from Sarah Rafferty, where she said that she hoped Darvey would happen in the very last episodes of the show, if it happened at all.

Why might they say this? Because hardcore Darvey shippers may be thrilled to watch an entire Season 8 of canon Darvey, but I think more casual viewers will lose interest. The unspoken will-they-won’t-they tension has captivated viewers for years, and once that’s gone so is one of Suits’ biggest hooks. If the powers that be still want the Donna-Harvey relationship to draw people in, they’d better cook up something really special to replace the sexual and romantic tension.

Donna and Harvey have prepared for this relationship for so long that a lot of the typical sources in television love stories (one of them is jealous, one of them cheats, they miscommunicate, they aren’t familiar with each others’ priorities) would make little sense; they should be past that by now. If there’s any relationship conflict, that would have to be written quite carefully.

Another option is to let Donna and Harvey be happy together and throw conflict at them from the outside-- maybe someone else comes and tries to break them up, or threaten them professionally, and maybe they close ranks and become a wonderful battle couple.

(Personal note: If Darvey gets together, I’d like to see canon unquestionably establish Donna as Harvey’s equal in 7b and 8. I want to see them contributing equally to their relationship. I want to be convinced that they’ll both be happy in the long term, that this isn’t a relationship where Donna sacrifices for Harvey but has to grovel for his support in return, and I think they’re not there yet. Harvey really isn’t there yet. Getting there could generate plot.)

So these are some options for how canon can keep viewers invested through S8, but . . . I bet they won’t be as compelling for the general audience as the 7-season mating dance.

2.) Darvey gets smashed to hell in 7b.

I know I’m the only one, but I think this is still a real possibility!

At this point, Suits is running into two issues. One, it feels overall predictable and unsurprising. Two, it feels like it’s pushing its characters out of character in order to manufacture surprises (see: Harvey’s sudden infatuation with Paula, rule-obsessed Sheila’s sudden willingness to cheat on her fiance). If they can thwart viewer expectations on one of the biggest questions-- will Darvey happen?-- while remaining true to their characters, that could be pretty damn cool.

It’s also a reasonable option, in my opinion. It could generate plenty of plot for Donna and Harvey in 8a, since they might completely burn their bridges in 7b and have to rebuild from scratch, and it also leaves room for a different central romance!

So there’s this ship that nobody talks about. It’s a m/f ship, which means it’s more likely to be canon on this sadly heteronormative show than, say, Marvey. The characters have had compelling plots and interactions from Season 1. They’ve laughed together. They’ve survived drama. They respect, care about and understand each other. They have the same interests and hobbies. They have hilariously sexual conversations. They have literally said “I love you.”

I’m talking about Louis and Donna.

Yes, I’m serious, and so was Sarah Rafferty when she claimed Donna needs someone more emotionally open than Harvey to be her “life partner,” and so was Rick Hoffman when he said, “I just don’t understand how Louis could not be attracted to a woman like Donna.”

Pros of Lonna: Surprises! Drama! I can see this being the internal tension that drives 8a, and hell, I can’t imagine a better cliffhanger for season 7′s finale than a Lonna moment. This wouldn’t be radically out of character-- I’ve been checking, and there’s a surprisingly large amount of foundational material for this ship-- yet it’d massively upset audience expectations and also the existing relationship dynamics between Donna, Louis, and Harvey.

No, I’m not forgetting Harvey. Maybe he doesn’t want Donna himself, but seeing Louis end up with her would upturn everything he thought he knew about the world. Given that Mike’s also leaving and that he might still be dealing with Paula-related guilt, this plot twist would send Harvey reeling, especially if he and Donna are still working out the fallout from the kiss. If he lashes out and screws up his professional life too, then that can generate legal plots as well as personal drama.

Long story short, Lonna is potentially a massive plot generator.

Cons: The big downside of Lonna is that (besides Rick Hoffman and Sarah Rafferty who have been discussing it at least since Season 2) practically nobody ships it. Louis is so often treated as fodder for jokes, it’s possible that audiences just wouldn’t take it seriously. Also, a lot of Darvey shippers would be furious and heartbroken.

Question 6: What’s my ideal season 7 finale?

Okay, I know nobody is actually asking this, but I want to tell you!

Mike and Rachel dance peacefully at their wedding reception, safe in a happy bubble, oblivious to the world burning down around them. Jessica’s in the Plaza lobby, threatening some poor sucker over the phone in a desperate bid to save her political career. Harvey’s locked in the bathroom, fighting off a panic attack and failing, wondering whether he’s sick because of Paula, or because of Mike, or because Donna’s not speaking to him anymore . . .

Meanwhile, Louis and Donna share a sweet, intimate conversation on a hotel balcony that leads to a sweet, intimate kiss-- only to have Donna pull back, gasping as though she’s been burned.

SUITS RETURNS IN FALL 2018.

(I don’t know about you guys, but I would so tune in for that Season 8.)

“You’re probably wondering what I am doing here.”

“Yeah!” Marinette said, clutching her covers to her chest as shetried to process the sight of the super heroine sitting cross legged on theedge of her bed. “How did you even-”

“I came in through your skylight,” Queen bee said cutting offthe question with a wave of her hand, “Chat mentioned a while back that youusually keep it unlocked and I needed to talk to you.”

“I am going to kill that stupid cat,” she muttered under her breath.

“What?”

“Nothing,” Marinette said quickly. “So, what are you doinghere?”

“Well you see, the thing is… wait are you naked under there?”Bee gasped, her eyes going wide and her face flushing an obvious red even inthe semi-darkness.

“No! Why would you say that?!” Marinette shot back, her own facecoloring.

“Well you are doing the whole, blanket clutchy thing!”

“Because a stranger has shown up out of nowhere in my bedroom inthe middle of the night and I am in my pajamas!”

“But I’m not a stranger I am a superhero. And I know that Chatvisits you.”

“He doesn’t come in when I am sleeping!”

“Oh. I guess you have a point there,” Bee said lookingthoughtful. “Anyways I need your help.”

“My help…” Marinette said, wondering what on earth couldpossibly be happening. Had her identity gotten compromised? Did Bee know thatshe was Ladybug and that’s why she was here asking for help? It wasn’t likethey had had any interaction outside of the suit.

“Yes. Now this is probably going to require some backstory.After all I am sure you are wondering why a superheroine would need the help ofa random civilian.”

Well, that answered that question at least.

“Some backstory would be nice,” Marinette said, wondering whaton earth her life was coming to. She hoped to God that Chat wasn’t somehowgiving the others the impression that she was some sort of superhero therapist.

“Well I am sure you know all about my assorted heroic exploits,”Bee began with that edge of arrogance that Marinette was familiarwith, “and I am sure that you could only imagine how awesome it is to besomeone like me.”

“Uh huh,” Marinette said flatly.

“But…” Bee hesitated, biting her lip nervously, “myregular life, the non superhero one… well let’s just say things aren’t goingquite as well.”

It looked like she was playing therapist after all, butMarinette couldn’t find it in her to be upset. She had never seen Bee showingthis sort of vulnerability to any of them, not even Chat who after an initialperiod of mutual distrust she had become fairly close to, (a pair of nerds theboth of them), and they had all been working together for months.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Marinette askedhesitantly.

Bee nodded, her flush intensifying as she struggled to find thewords she was looking for. “Ok, ok I can do this,” she muttered.

Marinette sat up, trying to make herself more comfortable as shewaited for the other girl to begin.

“Ok. So for this to make sense there are a few things you needto know first,” Bee began, you see a lot of this centers around a girl.”

Marinette nodded. She wasn’t particularly surprised. Bee hadnever been subtle about her crush on Ladybug.

“So for a long time I’ve had a crush on a girl in my class,” Beesaid her eyes fixed on her hands as she nervously twisted her fingerstogether. “At first I didn’t really know it was a crush, and then by thetime I did… well things had already gotten kind of complicated.”

“You two were already friends?” Marinette asked.

“No we were already enemies,” Bee said glancing up guiltilybefore dropping her gaze again, her flush deepening. “According to my bestfriend I can be… how did he put it… a spiteful vindictive bitch who isn’tworth the effort.”

“That’s terrible! What sort of a best friend says something likethat?” Marinette gasped.

“Well, that’s actually the real problem,” Bee said, her eyesglistening slightly with tears, “we aren’t best friends anymore.”

“Well good,” Marinette said reaching out and grabbing Bee’shands, “he didn’t deserve you.”

“No, you don’t… you don’t understand,” Bee said between snifflingsobs, “he was right.”

“Oh,” Marinette said dumbly as the distraught girl clung to herhands, the tears running freely now.

“I was awful, and terrible and I want to get better, but Icouldn’t stop and I am sorry, I am so sorry…”

Marinette leaned forward and pulled Bee into a hug, drawing astartled gasp from the heroine. She held her tightly, trying to convey as muchlove and support as she could to her unknowing friend. Bee hesitantly returnedthe embrace, seeming almost afraid to indulge in the small intimacy.

“Look,” Marinette said, “I don’t know you that well, butI’ve seen the way you interact with Ladybug and Chat and Vixen, clearly youknow how to be a good friend, regardless of what this guy says.”

“You, you watch videos of me?” Bee asked, her voice tremblingwith hopeful excitement.

“Of course,” Marinette lied resigning herself to her fate ofconvincing her partners that she was some sort of obsessive fangirl, “youare amazing.”

“I can’tbelieve that you watch videos of me,” Bee said with a watery laugh, “wow. That…thank you. I needed that.” She broke the embrace and pulled back, giving ahesitant smile.

“You’rewelcome,” Marinette said softly.

“You knowthat top is really cute,” Bee said “you really should rock the low cut lookmore, it’s very flattering. Just because you’re petite doesn’t mean you don’thave killer boobs.”

Marinetteflushed, “So, you had a falling out with your best friend?” she said todistract from the unexpected rush of warmth she felt from the compliment.

“Yes,” Beetook a deep breath, “so let me try to give you the full story. So like I said Ihave actually had a pretty massive crush on… this girl, for a while now, but wewere pretty much enemies. In fact my friend wasn’t really far off the mark whenhe said I was a bit of a bitch.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “I didn’treally have a lot of friends. I sort of grew up in a way where people have tobe nice to me so I didn’t really bother to care why. A- the boy I was talkingabout, well he was the only person I actually had a real friendship with, andfor a long time we only really had each other so I never saw any sort of aproblem. Well, then he started making other friends and…”

“And he leftyou behind?”

“No. Nothinglike that, it was more… he saw how I was compared to them.”

“Oh,”Marinette said, “I see.”

“And it waslike, the more he gravitated towards them, the more I hated them. I mean I hadnever really been nice to them but… it was like I wanted to prove that it didn’tmatter. That I hadn’t brought this on myself. So whenever he would try to talkto me about it I would just brush it off. Tell him that he just didn’t know anybetter yet.”

“So whathappened?”

“Well we gotinto a fight. A bad one. And I realized that I was losing him and I didn’t haveanyone to blame anymore. This was also right about the time that I realizedthat a lot of my feelings weren’t exactlywhat I thought they were and that kinda put some stuff into perspective butthat’s a whole long story with a party and champagne and accidentally makingout with my OTHER friend who I don’t like like that but it made me realize IDID like girls like that at… anyways it’s not important.

Theimportant part was that I wasn’t about to end up one of those miserable loserswith no friends sitting around waiting for someone to change them. I mean forgod’s sake I am-“ she cut herself off with a cough, “I’m stronger than that,”she finished mildly.

“Go on,”Marinette said encouragingly.

“Well I startedmaking more of an effort, and for a while it was actually getting better. Imean it wasn’t easy but…” she shrugged. Then I got my Miraculous and it wasamazing. I mean I was working with Ladybug! She was my idol! If anyone couldhelp me be a better friend it would be her. And of course Chat’s great, themelodramatic little nerd. And even Vixy is pretty cool when she isn’t trying tohog all of Ladybugs attention. Plus she’s smoking hot which helps.”

“Yeah you’renot wrong,” Marinette muttered. “It looks like things were getting better foryou, what happened?”

Bee gave heranother guilty look. “Remember the girl I mentioned? The one I have the massivecrush on? Well… my best friend likes her too.”

“Oooohh. Andhe doesn’t know that you like her.”

“No, hethinks that I like him.”

“But you don’t.”

“No, I do.”

“Wait, now Iam confused…”

“It’s calledBisexual, it means you like both guys and girls? I would figure you would knowthis already, I mean you’re best friends with Cesaire for god’s sake.”

“That’s notwhat I meant,” Marinette said with a pout, “I mean you also like your bestfriend? Like… Like, like?”

“Yeah.”

“And hedoesn’t know that either?”

“Oh no,everybody knows that.”

“And I’mback to being confused again,” Marinette sighed. “Also how did you know that Iam best friends with Alya?”

“We’ll comeback to that,” Bee said quickly. “So the run down is like this- I’m kinda in lovewith my best friend cause… duh. You’ll understand that in a minute. Meanwhile Iam also definitely in love with my arch enemy, but no one knows that and wefight all the time. My best friend finally realized that HE was in love withyooooooooouuuuu know who… hehehe… and so he started getting more and more upsetwith me for always being mean, which just got me even more upset because if youtwo get together than I am just totally screwed so that can’t happen. But thenI pushed too far and he told me that we can’t be friends anymore and I can’t livewith that. I’m used to him not liking me back but he’s never not been my friendand it’s horrible! And I tried to apologize but he isn’t talking to me and IHAVE to fix this Marinette. I HAVE to!”

“Uuhhh…”Marinette said her eyes wide as the heroine shook her by the shoulders. “Thissound’s really complicated. I mean I am happy to listen and help but, I don’tknow if I am the best person to talk to. I mean, why me? We’ve never evenspoken to each other until tonight. Shouldn’t you try talking to one of yourother friends first?”

“Oh I did.Chat and I talked things out for like 3 hours. He may be a nerd with a terriblesense of humor but the guy is a freaking marshmallow. Gives pretty decentadvice too.”

Marinetteblinked. “But if you talked to Chat then why are you talking to me?”

“Well I’mfollowing his advice,” Bee said leaning in conspiratorially.

“And hisadvice was to come talk to me?”

“Notexactly,” she smiled shyly.

Marinettecould feel a strange tingle of anticipation running along her spine, of whatexactly she wasn’t sure. She felt like there was a puzzle piece waiting to beclicked into place. She swallowed. “Wha… what was his advice exactly?”

Bee’s smilegrew and Marinette couldn’t help glancing at her lips. When had the other girlgotten so close?

“Well hesaid that if I wanted to make things right with my friend that I needed tofirst work things out with my crush.”

“Makessense,” Marinette said not even fully aware of what she was saying as Bee slideven closer, her lips hovering just inches away from her own. “And you need myhelp with that?”

“It is kindof crucial to my master plan,” Bee laughed, reaching up to brush Marinettebangs out of her eyes.

“Why?”Marinette breathed.

“Because I’min love with you, you dope.” And with that she leaned in the rest of the way.

Marinette’smind went blank as their lips met, lost in the feeling of softness and heat.The kiss was gentle, almost reverent, as if she were something precious that atany second could shatter. Instinctively her head tilted to a more comfortableangle, her breath hitching as she felt Bee’s hand gently cup her face. Theyboth leaned into the kiss, lips cautiously pressing to deepen this kiss justenough that there could be no mistaking the fluttering of want that passedbetween them.

“Wow,” Beesighed breaking the kiss but not fully pulling away, “that was… damn. No wonderour whole class is in love with you.”

“yeah…”Marinette laughed shakily trying to gather her scattered wits and wonderingwhat would happen if she leaned forward again.

“Wait…” shesaid her mind clearing slightly, “what do you mean our whole class?”

Apparentlyshe wasn’t the only one who had been eager for more, because instead ofanswering Bee leaned forward and kissed her again, more confidently this time.Her fingers threaded into lose hair as her lips nibbled and pressed eagerly againsthers.

Marinettemelted momentarily against the sensation, her body crying out to be touched andloved, before she pushed the other girl away.

“What do youmean OUR whole class?” Marinette said again, firmer this time.

Bee grabbedher hand, threading their fingers together as a bright, familiar flash of yellowlight shot across her body revealing a grinning Chloe Bourgeois in its wake.

“Would yougive us a minute Pollen?” Chloe said to the exasperated looking kwami buzzingnext to her shoulder.

“Don’t say Ididn’t warn you,” the little demi-god sighed before darting off to go exploreMarinette’s room. In a small corner of her brain that was still capable ofrational thought Marinette wondered if the kwami knew that Tikki was there aswell.

“I know it’skind of a lot to process,” Chloe said kindly, which in and of itself madeMarinette’s already overwhelmed brain hurt, “that was Pollen. She helps me turninto Queen Bee obviously. I can introduce you two properly later.”

“Ch… Chloe…”Marinette choked out. “You’re… YOU’RE…”

“Yes I’m asuper hero. I know it’s kind of a big deal.”

“YOU’RE INLOVE WITH ME?” Marinette shrieked, grateful that her parents were out of town forthe night since calm and quiet was pretty much past her ability right now.

“Oh, yeah…”Chloe blushed, “I mean I had originally planned on working my way up to thatpart, I mean not that I am complaining or anything, but-“

“Oh my GOD IKissed you!”

“Yeah, itwas pretty great right?” Chloe grinned, preening.

“Oh… I can’tbreath…” Marinette whined digging her fingers into her hair and wondering if itwould be too much of an abuse of her powers to try and summon a way to redothis whole thing. She felt a comforting comforting squeeze on her other handand relaxed slightly, until she remembered that CHLOE was sitting on her bed,holding her hand. She pulled it away like she had been burned.

“Hey, relax,I am not asking you for a commitment or anything,” Chloe said holding her handsup apologetically. “Besides as unbelievably amazing as that was, it’s not thereason I am here,” she said resolutely.

“WHY ARE YOUHERE?”

Chloe gaveher an exasperated pout, “I TOLD you, I came here to confess you to that thereason that I am always so mean to you is because I liked you so that you couldforgive me and be my friend and help me get back Adrien, I thought I was prettyclear on that.”

“Adrien…MYAdrien… the boy I have been pining overfor months… this whole conversation has been about you and Adrien?” Marinettesaid as the implications of that statement sunk in.

“Yeah.Again, how is this unclear? I mean I may have gotten a little off topic whatwith the whole you liking me back thing-“

“I never saidI liked you back!”

“Youcertainly kissed me back.”

“That isbeside the point!” Marinette said her face going scarlet.

“You’reright,” Chloe said, “we have bigger problems to discuss than your denial”.

“No! No discussing!You need to go so I can curl into a ball and die!”

“Oh god, nowyou sound like Adrien. God I have a type don’t I. Even Ladybug is a totaldramaqueen once you get to know her and she is by far the most chill of mycrushes.”

Marinettepick up her pillow, shoved it against her face and screamed.

“Come on,”Chloe pleaded trying to pull the pillow away from her face. “We don’t have timefor this, you have to help me!”

Marinettegave another frustrated wail.

“Please?”

“No.”

“I need youthough!”

“Marinetteis not here, please leave a message.”

“If we makeout some more would that make you feel better?”

Marinettelet out another muffled scream.

I figured that I wanted to contribute to the fandom in some way and I read a lot of fics, so why not make a rec list? I included the summary for each fic, plus some commentary from me in italics. tldr: Keith and Shiro were together pre-canon but then Shiro went on his mission and came back with no memories of his time with Keith. How does one even begin to deal with the love of your life forgetting you?

It's been a while now, and they haven't really talked, at least not about anything important. They haven't talked about Shiro's disappearance, or what happened to him during captivity, and they certainly haven't talked about what they were before the Kerberos mission and how things have changed. But nothing can stay bottled up forever. During a late night combat training session, Shiro and Keith find themselves in a position to talk, to reconcile, to come to terms with all the things they endured and all the things they lost.

They especially don't have time to deal with the shared past they Do Not Talk About or the complicated feelings stretching between them. Even more so with the Galra closing in on them, Shiro's PTSD resurging when it's least convenient, and Keith's increased introversion and social withdrawal. But forced together by circumstance the two paladins soon find that they are less alone than they seem and come upon a surprising discovery.

It’s pretty long, but it has a great plot, believable character dynamics for Keith and Shiro, and even the entire team once they come in, with an interesting plot.

Keith and Shiro find themselves stranded on a dangerous and desolate world with little hope of survival. Against all odds, Keith must find a way to contact their team mates so they can be rescued, before the injuries Shiro sustained in the fight with Haggar kill him.

When they drop out of the hurtling nightmare of the wormhole, everything blends into nausea and the scream of alarms, the stars smearing into concentric loops outside their Lions.

Keith grits his teeth, hauling helplessly at controls that were already damaged even before they got thrown out of the hangar, across the universe and back into space again. Arms and shoulders straining, muttering constantly under his breath, he tries to get any real response from his Lion, but the connection’s been reduced to just a faint wavering spark, like a candle about to go out.

Finally Shiro brings his own Lion around and physically stops Keith’s uncontrolled spin. His voice sputters in over the com. “This is no good. We’re gonna have to find someplace to set down.”

Honestly everything I wanted from a post-s1 fic. The slow burn was done really well.

As the description says, it’s basically a sci-fi omegaverse captive prince au. My descriptions really can’t do it justice, but the character interactions in this fic are what I live for.
