Last week started out pretty well. I got a lot of work (paid day-job stuff) done; took my kids to the library for therapy dog reading time, took them to the park to birdwatch (we saw so many woodpeckers, both downy and red-bellied). I took a lot of walks and wrote a lot and read a lot.

C. and I had a sweet discussion about relationships. He asked me if he could have a girlfriend and I said that one day, when he’s older, and he meets a girl he’s into who’s into him, he can have a girlfriend. Then I said that he’s a long way off from dating, though, and that in the meantime he just needed to make friends with people, girls and boys. He said “okay,” paused, then said: “Does that mean I can have a girlfriend and a boyfriend someday?!” I said: “If you want to, then absolutely.” But internally I was screaming: “Oh my god, he’s gonna be bi and poly!!!!” Obviously I know that kids say and do all kinds of things that have no bearing on their identity or life, but it still made me smile. Later on that day, he said he wanted Spider-Man to be his boyfriend someday, which was also super cute. (And of course made me think of both the Bi-Der Man meme, and Andrew Garfield saying he’d wanted to play Spider-Man/Peter Parker as bi.)

There was one day when C. seemed like maybe he was coming down with something, and I got a little worried, but then he seemed fine, so I thought it was just a fluke.

Friday morning, I woke up feeling good. I thought P. and I would finally be able to fuck that night (we hadn’t had sex in a week and a half; first he had a backache, then I had some genital irritation which I did not want to make worse). But then C. was acting really weird, like saying he needed a nap after only being awake for two hours, and his eyes looked really glassy, and his forehead felt warm. I checked his temperature, and sure enough, it was slightly elevated. He only got worse from there.

Well, whatever he had has since made its way through the everyone in the house. It’s not CoViD. We’ve taken multiple CoViD tests over the course of the past four days, and all of them have been negative. I know antigen tests aren’t as reliable as PCR tests, but last April when we did have CoViD, the tests showed positive as soon as we were symptomatic. Plus, with CoViD I had insane body aches, fatigue, and brain fog, and have had none of that with this virus. (Well, not much. There’s always a little fatigue with any virus, but this is nothing compared to CoViD fatigue.) But we’re treating it basically the same way, anyway. Quarantining, resting as much as possible, megadosing on vitamins.

The first few days after we started coming down with it, P. and I felt pretty good, and we said: “Oh, maybe we got really mild cases!” I guess we jinxed it, because as of Monday evening, it got a lot worse for both of us. Still not the sickest I’ve ever been, but it’s no fun.

Worst parts of the past five days:

I had to pass on a really well-paying freelance gig, because the deadline was the end of this week, and I knew I’d be too sick to do it well, and taking care of sick kiddos on top of it so I wouldn’t have the time.

Obviously, P. and I have not gotten to have sex. It’s been over two weeks now! I know in the grand scheme of things that’s not a long time, but for us, it kinda is.

The being sick itself. All the phlegm and snot, oh my fucking god. It is endless.

My nose is chapped! My lips are chapped!

Not being able to keep my house clean/picked up. I’m not a clean or neat freak, but in recent months I’ve realized I do better if we keep up a baseline of organization and cleanliness, and we’ve been staying pretty on top of it. But this week, what with being sick, we’ve done dishes and laundry as needed, plus general wiping down of surfaces with disinfectant, and everything else has fallen by the wayside.

I am so fucking tired. Not like, fatigue-tired, but like, I haven’t been sleeping well despite my best intentions. Because either the kids keep me up half the night so I can tend to their ailments, or I just can’t sleep because I’m either blowing my nose or spitting out phlegm every two seconds. And last night was the full moon, and I can never sleep when it’s a full moon, sick or no.

I started feeling bad about my Career and my Life and Myself, thinking: “Ugh, I’m a failure at everything and I’m old and hideous and everything is terrible now and is gonna be terrible forever.” Fortunately, I nipped it in the bud quickly, remembering that I always get depressed about myself/my life when I’m sick, and that it is not the right time to be taking stock of anything.

Best parts of the past five days:

On Sunday, when I still thought this might be a mild cold, I was able to attend the Four Queens online writing workshop. I wrote some stuff, and got lots of great ideas for current and future projects. And I just really liked what Mathias had to say about attention and astonishment.

I’ve been taking Mathias’ words to heart. Even as I’ve been sick, I’ve been taking time every day to step outside or at least look outside, or even look at something inside, and pay deep attention and feel astonished, and that’s led to even more lists and ideas and scraps; more mulch for future writings.

I’ve been spending as much of my time as possible reading books or watching videos and films. And basically everything I’ve been watching and reading has been by and/or about queer and trans folks. Books I’ve read: A Minor Chorus by Billy-Ray Belcourt, Feral City by Jeremiah Moss, and IRL by Tommy Pico. Things I’ve watched: The film of Abigail Thorn’s play The Prince, Chris McKim’s documentary Wojnarowicz: Fuck You Faggot Fucker, and Caelan Conrad and Jessie Gender’s newest video essays on YouTube. I highly recommend all of it.

I’ve been drinking a lot of tea. I’ve been mostly foregoing cold medicine and having a hot toddy every evening instead. When I have tried the cold meds they just haven’t helped very much, or not enough anyway, and I find that a good hot toddy helps just as much. Plus, hot toddies taste better and are more enjoyable than cold meds. And there’s no way I’m gonna take cold meds and drink at the same time. Twenty years ago, back when I used to take severe liver damage may occur as less of a warning, more of a challenge? Sure, I mixed meds and booze. But back then I simultaneously still hoped to/thought I would die young, and also kinda thought I was fuckin’ invincible. Now I’m (comparatively) old and would like to live a lot longer, thank you, so I’m not going to risk it.

Today I made myself ramen for lunch—just instant ramen, but I tried this technique I learned that makes it taste better, and also added chopped scallions, a splash of soy sauce and a splash of chili oil, and I topped it with a fried egg. Then I took a long, hot aromatherapy bubble bath. Then I drank tonight’s hot toddy, and cooked dinner while listening to my favorite radio station. Every year on International Women’s Day they play only women/women-fronted bands and artists all day. The DJ tonight did a whole block (two songs each) of Alanis Morissette followed by Garbage followed by Ani DiFranco, and it was like, holy flashback to middle school thru early college, Batman! (I mean that in the best possible sense.) Then we changed the sheets on all the beds, and now I’m lying in bed, finishing this entry, and feeling better than I’ve felt since Monday. I’m cautiously optimistic that I’m actually on the mend.

Other things: 

Saturn has moved into Pisces, and it’s intense.

I have a wee little crush on someone. They are currently On The Road, and I’ve been looking up photos of places they’re currently in. I realized that this is actually fairly common for me. Be it friend, family, crush, lover, acquaintance even…if I am thinking of someone who lives away from me, and/or is traveling, I look up photographs of where they currently are. It’s sort of a way to see what they’re seeing, maybe in that way sort of feel what they’re feeling. And it’s sort of the opposite of a postcard. A postcard is sending someone a piece of where you are, saying wish you were here. This thing I do is finding a piece of where someone I care for is, thinking wish I was there.

I was thinking about K. the other day. Sent her a message to say I think of her often, and I hope she’s well. She has not responded, and I’m not surprised nor do I blame her. For three years, she tried so so hard to be close with me, and I really didn’t let her in. I wanted to, but I was also afraid, and there were several other factors. And she eventually gave up. And, as I said, I don’t blame her. I send her messages a few times a year, to let her know I still think of her. I wish she’d respond, but at this point in my life I’d rather have people know I care even if they don’t reciprocate.

We’re hunkering down for a winter storm that’s due within the next couple days. I want it to be spring, but despite the returning birds and the daffodil shoots, it’s still officially winter for the next two weeks.

I love Andrew Garfield and his version of spider man/peter parker is my favorite. I dont believe hes bi tho so dont get that idea. But would love to see his version of mj. Also love his brotherly bond with tom and toby. Its weird shipping them together tho who ever said that was wrong

Andrew is such a good spider-man, he really loves the character which makes his version so special. I wish he had got a better chance with his films, he deserved a bit better for how much it meant to him.

He’s not canonically bi, Andrew just wanted to play him as that but Sony were against it and actually asked him to sort of apologise publicly for saying it bc he received some backlash for it from homophobic fans :(

I also don’t think it’s weird to ship the spider-men, I love their bond on screen I think it’s perfect, but if people wanna have a bit fun with it outside of canon I don’t see anything wrong with it.

Tom Hardy’s Venom not staying in the MCU is actually the best thing to ever happen. Eddie mentioned finding these “spider-men” before he was sent back to his universe. Eddie travels to New York. It’s the perfect set up to bring Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker back. Let him play a bi Peter Parker like he’s always wanted, let him pass off the torch to Miles Morales. Sony has the chance to right this wrong after how successful the Venom franchise has been as a result of letting people have creative freedom. Andrew mentioned in NWH how he got angry and vengeful, and that would explain the “murderer” graffiti we see in the Morbius trailer. He can redeem himself by becoming a mentor to a younger Spider-man. He also mentioned he didn’t have anyone significant in his life? Boom. Introduce a male love interest. Sony don’t be a fucking coward THIS IS WHAT WE WANT.

i think having andrew!spidey learn to love again with his own mj, after knowing about the other versions of him with their mjs, how they make things work...it would be so beautiful. like a really stunning form of healing and portrayal of grief, because his love for gwen won't leave and his love for mj will be different, but just as strong. that kind of character growth is everything i live for, and to give peter that bi rep...so good. also i just want tasm3 for andrew and i want it to be as gay as he wants it to be, and tbh this is the only answer 😌

September 1st: Favourite s1 episode?

Honesty a super hard pick, and i think there are better episodes in the season but the one i go back too most often is ep 10 “The Sear of Selene” 

It just has some of the best character moments (for me) and is truly funny and interesting. And has some real insight into Donald and Dewey’s feelings about Della and her being gone. we saw glimpse of this in ‘dime chase’ and ‘woo-woo/Atlantis’ but here we actually see the pain Della left in her wake. And what it means going forward. 

Plus stokeulse is a big sweet boi and i love watching him and Donald ‘re-connecting’ speaking of witch it is also the frist time Scrooge and Donald have a form of re-connection to 

“just like old times ah lad”

look at that face.

its a strong ep and lead the way for bigger ‘emotional hits’ down the line (the last crash of the sun chaser)

September 2nd: Favourite triplet?

I don’t really have one as they are all fleshed out and well rounded, that being said I am looking forward to more of Huey this season. But i don’t have a fav.

September 3rd: Favourite member of team magic

Webby, but i don’t know if that counts as she is main cast so i see her more often then any other Team Magic characters. The girl is fun and filled with so much love and she is to be feared. and I love her faults to she is awkward and hyper-fixated on Mcduck history to the point that its scary. and is a fun loving social shut in.

She is just so multifaceted and complex that i love her with all my heart.  

September 4th: favourite three caballeros 

I am bias on this one as i love José Oliveira (the og José) and anything involving that funky little parrot makes me happy. But in DT17 I do love that there is elements of that Og Jose in his characterisation

like in s2 ep 4 

when he calls over and hugs Donald (so sweet), and that he knows how to claim Donald down so fast (by making him dance and then getting him to sing) and to my knowledge he is the only one to do this in the whole show not just once but twice, so it shows that he has a deep understanding of Donald that most just don’t, and i have always loved that about their friendship.

plus from what i can tell from that ep as well it was Jose’s idea to meet up and he planned the trip (as he payed for it) so the fact he made arraignments for Panchito, Donald and THE BOY’S (+ scrooge) shows how much Jose really loves his friends, and plays an umbrella as an trumpet.       

September 5th: favourite ep of season 2

This was a hard one as most of the eps knock it out of the park, but i’m going to have to go with, ep 16 “the Duck Knight Returns” its just such a good ep and has so many wonderful layers to it, and i was actually caught of guard with the final Jim Starling twist. like i can’t even remember the lat time a twist hit me that hard (i got side swiped) I actually had to sit in silence for a solid minute or two and then watch the whole ep again.

they wasted no detail big or small in this ep (like that Jim was already wearing an unbuttoned DW suit and had the hat in the box next to him, or the sound drake made being thrown into the bathroom just like og DW, and the meta jokes and the animation, the whole ep just went so hard) 

and it was a really fun way to ‘pass the torch’ from one actor to another, especially playing with the idea of someone just not being done with the character yet and not wanting to let go, (as a lot of audiences have that issue, with re-boots and relaunches, and especially when a version of a character has an unfinished story left, think Andrew Garfield’s spider-man for e.g.)

i could honesty talk forever about this ep but i’ll spare you all.     

September 6th: favourite hug? 

Honesty its a three way tie...

1) Scrooge and Della when she first comes home. Just they way he scoops her up like a kid and holds her tight, makes my heart full. 

2) this one with Louie, just the mother son embrace was really earned here. 

3) and this one with Jose and Donald, its rare we see Donald so happy to see anyone (who is not his family) and just how naturally he ran into his arms was so nice. And Jose dropping his umbrella right away show how he knew what was coming. Plus i am a big fan of men showing their love and friendship in sweet fun ways like this, so a win for non-toxic masculinity here.   

September 7th Gizmoduck or Darkwing duck?

this is a hard one as i do like both of these hero boy’s and i have talked about how they have conflicting views of their own success through the other (basically, Drake has is personal life together, but Fenton has his hero life together, and i think it would be a point of envy for both characters) And I love Fenton and Drake for different reasons, but at their core they are somewhat the same just two people who want to help others for no other reason then it is the right thing to do.

And i Love what the show has done for both characters but...I will have to give it Drake by a fraction of a hair (feather?).

As unlike Fenton I only needed one ep to be 100% on board with Drake and i know everything i need to know about him from that. As DW had a whole ass show for a reason and that one ep showed it. As Fenton is a wonderful character and he is a very well done character, but one of his defining traits is that he is all over the place (like in his life, work, the way he specks ect) but that can get messy from time to time as it can be hard to be ‘on board’ with someone with no clear ‘goal’ persay (they did cover most of this in “who is Gizmoduck” but some of it still lingers now that can be a tiny bit jarring at times) But like that is SUPER Neat-picky, tho. 

And Drake has that chaotic feral energy that Fenton just don’t have (Fenton has more Bi panic energy), but Drake also has tired dad energy (like how he growls at GD in moonvation and when he calls to LP before the set explodes) and i love that about him. 

Get this man his Gosalyn already so he can be the dorky dad he is destined to be.     

September 8th: Favourite duck cousin?

I’m going to have to go with Gladstone, because he is a HUGE prick, but in a way he is not fully aware of. He is generous (he literally offers the boy’s a bucket of diamonds, just because they came by)    

And I love that half hazard nature about him, he is true neutral, things just happen to him and for him and he just takes it, and that is actually really interesting, (don’t get me wrong i love Fethry, Della and Donald) but Gladstone is such a wild card in the duck/mcduck family when compared to everyone else that its a nice change of pace from the rest in a way (all of them good hearted and well meaning people) I generally have no idea what he might do when presented with an actual problem/ choice, so to see that will be fun and this crews take on Gladstone in that regard.

As i think out of all the cousins he has the most growing/changing to do.      

September 9th: favourite ship?

Ok here is the thing.

in general fandom 

I don’t really have any strong feelings about most ships one way or the other. I think a lot are nice and I enjoy seeing others enjoy themselves and all the wonderful art and time they put into it. That being said out of all my years of being in fandoms I have had a grand total of 5-10 ships i am super passionate about and that is over the span of 10+ years. 

and one of the things i love the most about ducktales is how much it focuses on family love and pure platonic friendships (for both kid and adult characters). And that makes my ace heart happy.  So basically I’m saying is I have no strong feelings about most ships in general beyond “aww” or “man i love how much the fandom loves them” and “that is some great art/ fic / creative output I’m happy for them.” 

But with that out of the way, the question at hand.

I’m going to have to go with Donald and Daisy, as from a writing sand point it was so well done and sweet and cute. And it gave a new perspective on a relationship that has been around for 70+ years, so that was impressive all on it’s own, and it is going to be a loving, interesting relationship going forward.

September 10th: Favourite season 3 episode  

I am going to assume that this is out of the 7 eps so far (duh), which again is hard cause this show is just so damn good. But I would have to say it is ep 6 “Astro B.O.Y.D”

now cue story of me as a kid in 3...2...1...

when i was a kid, I was obsessed with Astro boy, i was maybe 6 years old and i loved it. I was a relatively poor kid so in the early/mid 2000′s i would get a lot of my reading/watching materials from my local library. This included 4 VSH tapes of Astro boy episodes for the 80′s series and i would watch the 2003 anime dub on Saturday mornings TV (one ep a week if that), The library also had the first 2 vols of the og manga that i read so many times that i could probably re-sight it from memory. anyway, the reason i love astro boy so much was because it gave me a feeling i had not felt in my young life before that point, even if i did not full understand it at the time.

Its a feeling i still can’t fully put into words, but i will do my best. Astro boy goes right for the heart in every way possible, but it always twist the knife when it goes for, grief, regret and longing agony. specifically when in looks at lost love, usually platonic love (Tobio and Tenma e.g), the feeling these story’s gave me was the complexity of pain that losing love can bring, but it is most effective because it is through the lens of a child (astro/ tobi) and an innocent, loving child at that. The child is (somewhat) untouched by the tragedy (via memory loss) but is still shaped by the love that was put into them, despite the grief's overall out come (the abandonment of said child). So the feeling is a bitter-sweetness that comes from a place of innocents but also personal understanding of the self Astro was made by Tenma, but he was not what tenma made him to be (his lost son) but astro became his own person who loves and is loved by others, and is a whole person on his own outside of what he was made for (and is in a way still A son to tenma just NOT Tobi). and there is that sense of a child just wanting to be heard and understood for who they ARE and not what others what them to be, regardless of their “potential” (in other words personal choice’s and passions that the child actually wants for themselves)

I just love Astro Boy ok...and i never get a chance to talk about it, so i thought i would here, as this list was foolish enough to give me an opening.

Moving on to the DT17 ep.

The Astro Boyd ep. hit all of these notes, the longing agony of lost love (Gyro and Boyd) the regret that came from Gyro for boyd’s creation.

Boyd’s innocents and loving nature coupled with his wants and identity not being fully understood (gyro thinking he is evil, Fenton wanting him to be a hero, Akita having him be a tool and Tesuka thinking he is just a mindless robot) and just wanting to be seen for what he truly is “a defiantly real boy” and he gets that conformation from Gyro at the end!

and Gyro has is own actualisation, about his own grief, after thinking his love was “misplace” for years on end in a way that made him shut down his heart almost completely. Only to find that he was right to let himself love and that love is actually what helped Boyd help himself. Gyro in essence realising that both him and Boyd are not mistakes or failures but two people who lost the one they loved (each other) and have finally found a way back to each other so they can both begin to fully heal.    

So it was a good episode *wipes tear away from eye*

September 11th : favourite villain?

I don’t really have a favourite villain as the show don’t tend to focus to heavy on them and when they do it is somewhat short lived, (like Magica in season 1 and Lunarus in season 2) and since this season has a group of villains (FOWL) and not just one main one like the last 2 seasons, I have a feeling that one of the up coming FOWL members may take the top spot later down the line.  

but if we are going off the one i find most entertaining...

I’m going to have to give it to

Magica she is played as scary, funny and damn relatable on occasion (the funzo scene), and i am never disappointed to see her. I think she is very different from comic magica in a lot of ways, but i enjoy this version for different reasons. And i think this magica has room to grow/ change (for good or for worst). So safe to say i am looking forward to the first ep in the line up.  

September 12th : favourite character?

why must you make me choose...

seriously all of the characters major or minor is shown in a way that makes them feel very real and well rounded even if they have very little screen time. for god sake the ottoman empire guys get character development (one left the show to pursue acting and they fight with scrooge in the moonvation). So this is not an easy pick to say the least.    

but I will be judging it by the one i ‘get the most out of’ so to speck....

and I have to say its a tie...

Donald Duck

I love him ok. He is very small and very angry and he will fight god(s) for his family safety. Anyway, I have always love Donald Duck shorts and everything else he shows up in he is always my fav.

I have always been able to relate to Donald as i too have a bit of a disability that makes it hard for people to understand be (in writing) and i have a ‘voice issue’ that makes me different from everyone around me. So i really understand the feeling Donald have and the anger that comes from being misunderstood in the most basic ways. Its not fun

So Donald has always been important to me in a sense,  

The thing about Ducktales 2017 that i love is that it fleshes out Donald’s already established characteristics, by giving them context (e.g. using his outbursts to protect the boys). this gives him something that me has been missing (in animation) for awhile now, and that is how functions outside of himself.

what i mean by that is that Donald is kind of unique when it comes to the Disney sensational 6, unlike the rest is/ can be

-selfish

-cowardly

-rude/ mean spirited

-a loser

these things are what make him different to the rest but in animation for a while he has been shown by himself (without his family or even Daisy) so all of the above characteristics are not “diluted” or held to any standard outside of Donald’s personal misery.

So he can be super selfish and an all around ass cause, yeah, if your life was one pain after the other no matter what you did and you were all on your own all the time, then yeah, your going to be a miserable little shit.  

But by reintroducing the boy’s and giving him a more defined role (father/ solo care giver) at least at the start of the show, it gives Donald a reason to “fight off” his less than noble parts of his personality. It also makes his action have more weight as everything he does or fails to do effects the boy’s. So that makes him more appealing overall as what he does (or doesn’t) do now matters, and all the tragedy in Donald’s life are also given weight (Della being gone for 10 yrs, and what that did to his relationship with Scrooge) so his pain is now REAL and even tho he is funny and reckless, he is now a person with flaws and failings but also victory's (getting Della back and his family being close again) and dreams (the three caballeros and his relationship with Daisy)

I have already talked a bit about his intro ep,

but as of right now i am more in love with the potential i see in the character. As we have not really seen to much of him like maybe 4 ep’s total. But Drake is the character i am most hyped to see more of (and the people who are around him, Gos and LP etc.)  

as i find him really interesting and he is (ironically) one of the more “normal” people in the show as a whole, He is not rich (high society rich anyway) he is not an explorer, not a scientist, he don’t have a ‘crazy’ backstory (like Gyro in Tokyok) and he doesn't have a direct connection to Scrooge himself (he never worked for him directly, and is not a family member)

so he is just a random guy, who thought “I’m going to do this crazy shit just because a handsome pilot man said i could if i wanted to”

and honestly that’s cool.    

he is fun and goofy in an engendering way, and his ego is the right amount of controlled (ish) but still over the top. the character is full of story’s that can be taken from the og show and mixed in with the new show (like his intro ep),

Drake is a just fun to think about, and how his world relates to the world of ducktales in general, as they were separate for such a long time, so seeing it come together in a new way is super existing.

I was already blown away by his last solo ep I can’t wait to see more of him (and his how he will be with his Gos, and how that adventure will unfold)  

September 13th Favorited actor/ actress 

now this is just an unfair question, this is a star strutted cast and everyone is amazing. There is a pop culture icon and a Disney legend in the cast (and the fact your not 100% sure which one’s i’m talking about proves my point)

So i am going to cheat a little here, I’m not going off the actors and actress themselves per say but rather I’m going to talk about my favourite performance in the show.

I judge this on two things

1) how much the act ‘disappears’ into the character (as in i don’t see the human person when there talking, even if its still just their normal voice)

2) I can’t see (/hear) anyone else being able to do the role

So on those two things in mind i will have to go with.

Paget Brewster

she just plays Della with this fun life to her, she can switch on a dime from crazy adventurer to comic foil to herself and then have moments of deep self refection. And she had to carry the introduction to the character all on her own, as Della was isolated, so if she didn’t sell Della to us (the audience) then the whole mystery/ build up to Della would have fallen apart. So that was not easy but she pulled it off (with great writing as well).

and she was/is amazing as Della, she is just awesome and I love listening to her and how she plays Della.

September 14th Favourite song

Oh for me it hands down has to be “not good enough” I love a good Bond ballad and Ben kills it. Plus it plays a big part in the episodes theme’s for LP,

its perfect, it fits the story, character and the parody.   

September 15th: Favourite scene from favourite episode.

well out of my top 3 episode (that i have already listed) I’m going to not talk about ‘the dark duck returns’ as there is a scene in there that i will talk about later. my favourite scene out of the other 2 episodes i have picked, i would have to go with...

The ‘Defiantly real boy’ scene from Astro BOYD

(i have already talked about my love for Astro boy and this ep in relation to that)  what i love the most about this scene is that not only did Gyro and Boyd ‘find’ each other again, but they found themselves again.

Boyd turned back into the real boy Gyro ‘made’ him to be (the boy Gyro always believed he was/could be) and that not only was that ok, but the best way for Boyd be himself. Thus his reclaiming of the word Boyd, he is still ‘the same’ but now has a clear sense of what it actually means to himself, mixing both 2BO and Boyd into one. With the love given to 2BO by Gyro and the life experience he has had as Boyd, so Boyd didn’t have to change everything about himself to be complete he just needed to understand that he was loved for being himself and to get confirmation that he is what he believes himself to be a ”Defiantly real boy” (T-T)

as for Gyro, he realised that his love, care and idealism (as he put it) was not misplaced (on Boyd), as when the little boy he loved so fully seemingly turn on him, that broke his heart and his spirit in a way that just would not fully mend. (thus his cold and rude behaviour through out the show so far...) But when Gyro fully embraces his idealism and loving side again (by embracing Boyd) he realises that he can bring his true feeling to the surface again as it was never a mistake for him to do so. thus why he embraces Fenton as an equal, by calling him Doctor and showing the respect he actually always felt for Fenton.

They found themselves through each other, and it melts my heart (T-T)

September 18th: Favourite scene of your favourite ship

I have to say its this little moment here...

Donald spent the whole episode wanting to impress this woman (Glamor), but after spending time with Daisy decided that Daisy’s dignity was more important then his Big Break. And Daisy returns in kind like ‘yeah i shouldn’t be treated this way’ and its just really sweet. It also got Daisy noticed and most likely jumb started her career and Daisy (again) returned in kind (most likely) by having the three Caballeros perform on stage right after.

so its a small but very insight look into the new dynamic Donald and Daisy are going to/ do have in this show.

September 19th: Favourite scene of  your favourite character.

oh my, where oh where to take this?

every character in this show is so good so this is just hard man....

but I will go with “The Duck Knight returns” one of my favs, and honesty i could talk about this episode all on its own (and I just might after “Lets Get Dangerous” airs)  but for me one of the scenes that really stuck out to me (that others have not really touched on) Is when they have the “meeting” with Alister, Jim, Scrooge and Dewey and then Drake comes in (and then immediately gets his shit wrecked by Jim).

As a film student, I feel this scene on a personal level.

the old(er) man who knows nothing but wants to take control.

the Pretentious “artist” that thinks “making it dark” makes it meaningful.

the person who pretends they know what there talking about but is to stuck in their ways to really change their mind.

and a child or child like understanding (its more common then you think)

(tho i would place LP in the audience position, which is the point of this scene) This scene hit me where I live, and is a really good commentary on Corporate meddling. As there are three ‘battles’ happening in this scene

1) Scrooge Vs Alistair

this acts as a money vs art argument, that is seen all to often in movies and shows, as I can guess we can all name at least one movie or show that has the “the record studio is changing your sound its not authentic...”

but Dt 2017 shows the other side to this and asks

authentic to what? like its one things when its your own creation but what if its was someone else's (like a reboot)  

is it better to be authentic to what was before (the og material), or is it best to take a new direction because its more ‘comfortable’ for you to do (fits your style / sensibility's)

thus leading to

2) LP Vs Dewey  

or a young audience vs the older audience, now Dewey and LP don’t really clash in this ep per say but, they act as a more “aggressive” views on audience backlash now they are Not Malicious but they do act as conflicting presences. Dewey (understandably) doesn’t get why it has to be dark and gritty, or what was happening at all as Alistair is going for a high concept film, but guess what, kids aren’t always great at picking high concepts up (at least not right away) and they can be easily bored by it, if its not engaging in a way that can appeal to them.  

and LP as an older audience member does know what the show/ movie is “meant to be” so seeing these high concepts added in a way that is not in the sprit of og material can be unnerving. And high concepts can miss the point or main message/style of the og material to the point that unrecognisable (*cough*Live action, Titians *cough*).

both of these points are legitimate concerns for audiences to have, as if something is so different its not unrecognisable then why not just make something original? and not draw a comparison.

and if your main audience is meant to be younger, they how are you going to engage them in way that matters to them or in a way they can understand (youth culture or ‘young truths’ i.e. things kids deal with/experience when growing up)          

speaking of which

3) Jim Vs Drake

this one is kind of the mix of the pervious two, or nostalgia vs update? (i can’t think of a better word),  

Jim is so determined to be in the spot light that he is willing to ‘throw away’ is morals (as seen at the end), his ‘artist integrity’ no longer matters as long as DW gets to come back, he just wants some sense of being back that it doesn’t actually matter how (*cough* Teen Titians Go*cough*), so he losses a big part of what made it DW to begin with and not because he don’t care about DW but because he places his value of it in one spot (himself as darkwing)  

as Drake on the other hand. understands that changes need to be made but he knows the movie is off base (he says so himself later), but he puts the value of DW in more then himself, as he has felt it be bigger then what was just on screen (Jim) and has carried that with him here. And since he is set up as an ‘enemy’ here (Jim jumps him) new is seen as an enemy as well, but he literal gets attached for just existing, so yeah not a great move by Jimbo there, and due to nostalgia (both in and out of the show due Jim starling/cummings) most may not of have pick up on it right away.

so yeah, this is an underrated scene and i wanted to talk about it a little as it sets up the rest of the episode.  

September 20th: Favourite friend group 

hmmm....

I have a feeling that this is going to change after the new wave of episodes (i like how team hero is shaping up) but for now i will have to say team science. They just have a nice balance of personalities and ability's, plus they the most team (ish) as they literally have to work together (most of them)

huey, gyro, fenton, manny and lil bulb

and all have their own style and smarts

Manny and Lil blub don’t even talk but they have big personalities and now with the addition of Boyd this little group feels well rounded.

Hi, I've been your follower for a month or two, and one of the posts that I've seen you make is SM/HT and that SM is in fact, Bi. Now I am Straight Male, and I've never seen SM in bi/gay light. I've always seen him as a straight man, and see his flirty compliments to male friends as just fun jokes like I have with my friends. I felt that if he did come out as bi, it would feel forced. I don't want this to come off as me ruining your fun or homophobic. -c-

-c- I’m only interested in this view and seeing it from your perspective. I’ve seen Tumblr SM post things like “SM is bi, and if you say otherwise you’re wrong.” Or “SM is for bi’s only” I’m sure sum of these are jokes, but sometimes they don’t feel like it. I’m sorry, I know this isn’t the place to ask, but you seem to have a very organized and well-educated SM account, and I’d thought I’d ask.

Oof, lots to tackle here. I’m not offended by the question or your asking it, for the record, it’s just something I genuinely do have a lot of thoughts on. If I was asked to label 616 Peter’s sexuality, no further comments, no backlash involved – as someone who is strongly invested in dissecting the existing canon, I think I would be hard pressed not to say that in canon he displays a very strong preference for women, in a way displayed that is hard to deny and that I personally wouldn’t want to deny. He is both depicted as being strongly attracted to women and genuinely and sincerely really liking women, in a way that, as a woman, it’s actually nice to see in pop culture. It’s a strongly depicted romantic and sexual desire, but as a woman it’s not a threatening desire to read about or observe. Oftentimes, from a male perspective written by male writers and illustrated by male artists, a sexual interest in women can come off, however unintentionally, as overwhelming or threatening or both, and when Peter is written well I never get that off of him, even when he’s being a little sexist in his worldview or remarks. I’ve said before that what I think sets Peter apart from his villains specifically is that he’s not an abusive man, and that’s something that comes across in how he treats women, especially women he’s attracted to. If the whole premise of a character is that he has a great power he refuses to use irresponsibly, then how he interacts romantically and sexually with women is going to be a big part of that. His interactions with the women he’s involved with are genuinely charming and fun to read, and the more sexual content is genuinely fun and romantic.

There’s a second reason I dislike when Peter’s attraction to women is viewed as unimportant or an aspect of the character that can be ignored, and that’s his extremely heavy Jewish coding. That Peter has an active romantic interest in women, and that in turn he is sexually desirable to those women, acts in opposition of the common stereotype as Jewish men as small, weak, and sexually unimpressive or undesirable as opposed to Good Strong Christian Men TM. That Peter slings around Yiddish, comes from Forest Hills (a historically extremely Jewish neighborhood), and displays a strong love for his aunt while simultaneously being an attractive flirt who has had more than his fair share of romantic entanglements with extremely beautiful women – Mary Jane Watson the supermodel, Gwen Stacy the beauty queen, Felicia Hardy the everything –  stands in stark opposition of the image of the Jewish male as an unimpressive Woody Allen-esque nebbish who primarily attracts women through pity over his lack of sexual appeal. To remove this drive on his behalf plays into Jewish stereotypes without ever addressing them for what they are. 

However, none of this is to say I think Peter Parker couldn’t be bisexual, or that I would dislike it if he was depicted as such in canon. I personally disagree with you, that if was written well, it would feel like “forced” representation. Obviously I reblog a lot of Spideytorch ship content and I’m very invested in their relationship and dynamic, and I’m invested in several relationships featuring Peter and another man besides, like his close relationship with Flash Thompson. And it’s very hard to prove someone, especially a fictional character, isn’t something; by saying Peter has a strong canonical attraction to women, I’m not saying he doesn’t also experience attraction to men. By saying it’s my personal opinion that he displays a strong preference for women in the existing canon, I’m not saying I think it’s out of the question that he also likes men. There would be a very heavy value in Peter being depicted as canonically bisexual (like Andrew Garfield suggested in the TASM franchise) – Peter is often depicted as the most “relatable” superhero, the superhero who is Just Like You, and so by depicting him as openly bisexual it would send a strong message about the most “average” superhero, that the most easy to relate to guy in the world isn’t heterosexual and that the heterosexual experience isn’t the default one. That’s where the value of Spider-Man in particular among all of the superheroes in the world being canonically bisexual comes in. Ultimately, if Peter were to be depicted as canonically bisexual, nothing would change – he would still be heroic, he would still be responsible, he would still be the pinnacle of goodness within the average man, a symbol of what it means to have great power and to use it responsibly. He would just be all those things but also bisexual. And I think that’d be great, completely regardless of any kind of shipping.

Idk, I think if Harry comes out it would make an impact on Louis, bc how I imagine it, media and people who love drama and gossip will look into Harry’s life and into every man he was connected with to figure out who he might’ve been romantically involved with. And well, Louis is right there, practically on the 1st place in the list. So I think it would definitely spark speculations. But I might be wrong, that’s just how I see it. But if Louis comes out, that’s like over for Harry’s closet

I know that you don’t have many words anon, but part of the reason I want to talk about all this is because I’m interested in the functions and mechanisms of celebrity closets in detail, not just the sort of broadstrokes approach.

Because, as the pictures that came out over night remind us, there are many different ways of coming out and the celebrity closet has its own set of weird rules that are quite different from the way things work out here in the world.

There is almost a ritualistic element to celebrity coming out. You must use certain words in certain types of interviews, or else everyone will assume you are straight (Some celebrities work with/round this restriction and don’t say anything, but just start being more gay in public - I’m thinking of Andrew Garfield and Richard Madden at the moment.  Obviously Kristen Stewart also took this approach).

So there are various things Harry could do or say that would change his official status, but not all would necessarily change the way people understood him. While describing himself with a label such as ‘bi’ or ‘pan’ that made it clear that he was attracted to men, or being clear that he’d been with a man, would change his status in the eyes of the press.  I don’t know if it would change that much about the way he was understood by people, particularly if the way it was done was being managed with that purpose in mind.

Usually there’s a weird misogynist double rule when it comes to sexuality - which is basically it’s what you do with men that matters.  So wlw are not taken seriously if they sleep with men.  While men are assumed to be gay if they sleep with men.  

What is so interesting is that at the moment Harry seems to be operating under the rules that usually apply to women. What matters to his career and his fan base, and what people concentrate on - is that he is presented as someone who is attracted to women.  As long as that is maintained he can do a range of things that suggest he’s also attracted to men and engage in LGTBQ culture.

The question I have, and what we don’t know the answer to, is there a point where this changes? I suspect he could embrace a label and refer to having been with men and the past, but could he date a man? At what point do the homphobic structures that very definitely exist start shutting down options for Harry.

My point is that there is not one value of ‘coming out’ for Harry, but many different options and the implications of them are different.

And I think this has signifcant implications for the question of the impact of them coming out seperately on each other.

I don’t think all the steps Harry could take would involve speculation about Louis.  There hasn’t been a lot of it so far, when there are discussions of Harry’s sexuality.  

But my broader point is - would public speculation about the possibility of Harry and Louis dating in the aftermath of Harry coming out change Louis’ public image or have a substantial impact on his career? And I don’t really think it would. It’s happened before, people are aware it exists, it wouldn’t change people’s lives.  With a little bit of management, I don’t know if it would have an impact.

In terms of the impact of Louis coming out on Harry.  You say that Louis coming out would mean it was over for Harry’s closet, but I’m not sure that’s true.  Again particularly with careful management (which would basically mean Harry publicly dating a woman in a way that was interesting to the public while it happened).  I suspect there are two lines in Harry’s closet.  The first is ‘confirmed to have slept with a man’ and the second is ‘confirmed not to be interested in women’ (there’s probably a third actually which is ‘publicly being with a man’).  I don’t think Louis coming out would necessarily pierce this line.

Now obviously this is all hypothetical.  We have no reason to think coming out seperately is somethig they’re thinking of.  But I do find it useful as a way of exploring how their closets operate and the way that homophobia plays out in their carreers.

Spiderman films: ranked

Spiderman. 9/10. Off to a strong start ✊ Tobey Maguire was supes adorable and he played Peter as the nerdy awkward baby that we needed (despite being a full grown man)

Spiderman 2. 4/10. Sorry but wtf was doctor octopus. Weird. Also the whole MJ/peter/Elijah from vampire diaries thing didn't really work. I mean I still love it but it's not great let's be honest.

Spiderman 3. 7/10 Unpopular opinion but this film slaps. It rocks guys come on. Just because Peter spends the entire film being a dick to everyone, and MJ is shit and gwen stacy is shit and the plot was shit and James franco is in it doesn't mean I don't still love this movie. And those moves? Oof :0

The amazing spiderman. 8/10. Ik these films don't get great reviews but damn it I loved this when it came out. And I love that andrew Garfield's tried to get Peter to be Bi 👏 some funny lines and a captivating plot (not to mention the best stan Lee cameo of all if them)

The amazing spiderman 2. 7/10. Not great but really not terrible either. Some cute stuff and some funny stuff and I will always cry at the ending but ultimately kinda boring and overly dramatic :(

Spiderman: homecoming. 11/10. Fuck yeah. Funny, emotional, awesome, cute. All we needed from a spiderman film and Tom Holland does an amazing job 🙏🙏

Forgive me if this sounds rude, but I am not jewish and was wondering if you had any tips (as well as NO NOs) for writing a Jewish person? (I’m totally and 1000% down with Spidey being Jewish (esp with all the evidence and it being canon in the spiderverse film) but I was raised christian and dont want to offend anyone if I was ignorant about a topic or trope). ofc I can only speak to my experience but smthing I think is especially applicable to spidey is sort of rapid yiddish-like banter? I know andrew garfield mentioned being very influenced by yiddish in his portrayal (I believe he’s the only live-action movie actor to have explicitly played peter parker as jewish). while I unfortunately don’t speak Yiddish, I found that very interesting just as a neat character detail!

something that some jewish people disagree on is whether or not it’s ok for people to have jewish characters celebrating non-Jewish holidays instead of their own. I know there are a few different opinions, but for me it’s always nice when people w jewish muses have their characters celebrate jewish holidays. maybe they also celebrate holidays like christmas with friends or family, but it would be nice if writers would not have them EXCLUSIVELY celebrate non-Jewish holidays unless there are actually character reasons involved. jewish holidays are cultural as well as religious, and many of them are a celebration and reminder of the fact that, despite many people and groups trying to exterminate us throughout history, we have survived. it’s nice to let characters celebrate that.

if you don’t know anything about jewish traditions / holidays, that’s perfectly fine! a lot of it is the thought that counts tbh? and so many things are very simple to look up / ask and even just putting in the most well-known parts of traditions is really really cool!

in that vein, general tips would just be adding in small details to show you’re thinking about it. it doesn’t necessarily come up that often (more so around big holiday times) but even small things like “do you headcanon spidey as keeping kosher?” or “has he had a bar mitzvah?” etc can really add authenticity. 

on my otto octavius blog, I felt that the ps4 version of the character gave me very strong jewish vibes. it didn’t impact many of my threads, but him loosely keeping kosher came up once in a way that was pretty subtle but was important to me. including stuff like that just sort of gives a more fleshed out background, in my opinion.

most of the “no nos” I can think of are general anti-Semitic stereotypes. I can’t think of any off the top of my head that apply to spidey, but some general ones are like “goblin” type stuff, some vampire stuff, greedy / dealing w money, etc. they’re pretty easy to avoid if you’re making your character like? a person and not just a trope?? ofc everyone has flaws, but their flaws don’t necessarily have to be a laundry list of anti-Semitic stereotypes. 

one thing I personally struggle with is the trope of jewish villains. since I write almost exclusively villains, i’m often torn bw wanting to see some of myself in them (being bi, being jewish) and not wanting to play into negative tropes. the conclusion I've come to is that it’s probably ok esp since I am always open to feedback from other jewish people etc. if you’re playing a villain who’s canonly in a marginalized group, I guess i’d just consider the creators’ intentions and whether you would be doing a disservice to a group by either keeping / changing that character’s identity. 

for chars like spidey / other comic characters who are heroes or were made by jewish creators, I think it does mean a lot to us that that part of their identity remains, and it’s awesome that you’re going to go for it! thanks again for the question!

Remus Lupin ♚ Halfblood ♚ 16 ♚ Order Member ♚ Andrew Garfield ♚ Played By Jay

Remus Lupin was the only son of Lyall and Hope Lupin. He was cursed with lycanthropy (werewolf curse) by Fenrir Greyback as a child. It was payback against Remus’ father. Since he was a child he has had to secretly deal with his painful changes, and most recently suppressants that cause him not only physical discomfort but also mental pain, therefor he usually tries to avoid taking them at all costs.

Remus hopes to go on to do something great, however his only goal that he can truly focus on is the Order. The Order of the Phoenix that is. War is looming for everyone, and he knows it. He was inducted into the Order at the young age of sixteen. They don’t wish for him to be an active member though as he has yet to graduate.

He has hopes that him and his friends will survive the coming war and that they can continue their lives with all their dreams in tact, however he knows it’s unlikely. It hurts him inside to know that there is a very good chance he will lose all those he loves and possibly himself. It was only him in danger things would be different, no one needed him around. Sadly, an entire world was in danger. He’s ready to fight, but he’s not ready to lose.

Headcanons:

Remus is bi-curious. He always has been however, if anyone were to ask his sexuality he would make it very clear he doesn’t like to put a constricting label on himself. However, his lycanthropy curse makes it incredibly hard for him to find love, or even bother looking for it. He wants to explore his sexuality, and try to find someone but is afraid of his friends rejection because he likes blokes just as much as women and he’s afraid if he ever did find love they wouldn’t be able to accept that he’s a monster, and he doesn’t blame them.

Remus doesn’t believe he deserves his friends. The one aspect that never fails to remind him he’s a burden is the fact that James, Sirius and Peter all learned to become Animagi to help him. He knows it’s dangerous, even for older and fully skilled wizards, let alone his teenage friends. He knows that his curse is no longer his burden to carry and it kills him inside. They deserve better than him.

Lily Evans is his closest friend. Yes, that is including the marauders, surprisingly. Him and Lily became close a few years prior. While James and Sirius liked to pick fun at Lily, (never in a rude manner), Remus preferred to not pay much attention to her at all. Remus didn’t pay attention to most and therefor it didn’t cause any issues between himself and the redhead. However, one day while he was studying by himself on the grounds Lily found him. It was odd, but for some reason she stopped to talk to him. They sat outside for what seemed like hours, just speaking. Lily always had a million things to talk about and Remus didn’t mind listening. They developed a close friendship over the years. You can often find them walking arm in arm or quietly leaning against each other in times of distress. He loves her to his core, and the fact that she doesn’t know his secret allows him the pleasure in knowing she doesn’t have to deal with his monstrous problems

so maybe it's just that he feels like he's too old or too established to suddenly realize he likes men, and because of that he doesn't think it's legit so he keeps brushing it off and playing it off as a joke?

i sound like a larrie bc this is the kind of shit i used to say about them but i'm dead serious like that's such a talked about lgbt issue, the feeling of being less legitimate bc not all of us figure ourselves out early on in life, so maybe that's holding him back

bc like..no, it wouldn't be illogical for a young guy to suddenly realize he likes boys. it wouldn't be illogical for a grown man to suddenly realize he likes men. there are systems in place that work hard to try and prevent lgbt people from discovering ourselves and the "if you're gay/bi/trans you'd have known when you were really little" is a) not always true and b) harmful!
