anyway, it's issues like this one that remind me why i kind of hesitate over some of the retcons in the recent spurrier runs, like the one with him now having opened dream's pouch of sand and stolen some before they even met. because like, it's easy enough to look at john constantine now — with 70 years of worst possible choices and unresolved trauma crystallizing underneath his skin to cover up all the soft, hopeful bits where he's used to getting hit — and assign him arbiter of ill intentions, magus of wasted potential, saint of shit choices, but man . . . he was new to this, once. he was still new to this 80 issues in.

80 issues in, and he's not used to losing friends yet; he even has time enough between catastrophes to grieve each individual one. still has enough left to live for at this stage to necessitate running and hiding, instead of bodily throwing himself at the problem like he learns to later, or sitting apathetically by to do nothing except smoke and watch the world fall apart when he finally gives up. fuck, he still apologizes.

and you're telling me this guy, this soppy wet cat motherfucker hiding from the devil in a church basement, so guilty over not knowing what happened to the guy that he paid people (paid chas, so chas could pay people) to attack that the bottle he's holding in this scene isn't even his second or third........this guy's past, more innocent self lied right to the face of DREAM OF THE ENDLESS and got away with it?

#the boy and the heron was good! visually stunning #however. I think it falls into the same trap that everything since ponyo and arietty has fallen into #which is too many elements. the ‘rock’ was unnecessary. it should have just been more of a… crazy wizard guy found some way to alter the spo #spirit world/afterlife on his own? Alternative Storylines

One of the reasons I don’t love the “Mickey came back from Mexico for Ian” storyline (unpopular opinion I know but hear me out) is because of how many more interesting storylines we could’ve got if Mickey had come back in a different way.

For one it would’ve been so interesting to see Ian deal with the fallout from the gay Jesus and prison storyline without Mickey.

Like we know Ian has always thrived when he’s had a purpose and a goal to work towards with first the army, then being an EMT. After prison when he didn’t have either of those, he had Mickey - he found purpose in being a good partner and husband, in getting them out of the south side and earning a living legally. It’s one of the reasons he was so excited about the move to the Westside. In season 11 after he quits the warehouse job we see how much it affects him to not have that purpose anymore (in his mind) and how low it makes him. Mickey helps pull him out of it and makes him shift his focus to a new job that brings on new opportunities and new goals - moving out, expanding the business etc. and we see him come back to himself and think about the future positively again. If he didn’t have Mickey I don’t think that would’ve happened so easily. I honestly think that once he left prison the reality of his actions would’ve really hit him hard and we would’ve seen him spiral similarly to the start of season 6 - “This is it for me, Lip.” In his mind he’d be back where he started after working so hard to get to where he had been. He alludes to it when he says “trying to find the strength to look for another soul crushing dead end job.” It would’ve been SO interesting to watch how he deals with that and see how he pulls himself out of it and comes to terms with his life again.

ALSO there would’ve been a cool callback to season 6 with the storyline of Ian moving on with his life while Mickeys is stuck in prison, except it could’ve been Mickey moving on with his life while Ian is stuck in prison. This would’ve been interesting to explore because I think they’d both understand the other’s actions/feelings so much more. I think Ian would’ve had to deal with the guilt & reality of how shit everything was for Mickey while he was in prison and his own role in that. BUT also I think Mickey moving on with his life would allow him understand more why Ian couldn’t have given everything up to go to Mexico with him and also maybe some of Ian’s actions in season 6. And how they deal with those feelings while finding their way back to each other would’ve made for pretty scenes I think.

I also have more thoughts on how this would’ve given Mickey a chance to have his own growth and development without Ian (which also would’ve been SO good to see) and if he were to come back to Chicago on his own terms, there’s a chance we’d have gotten to see the dynamic of a Mickey who got his life together and Ian who’s life is somewhat in shambles. Not that I think it actually would be in shambles, but I think that’s definitely how Ian would view it himself and witnessing that dynamic would’ve been so interesting.

Would it have been happy? Probably not but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t have been decent TV and character development.

Can't help but think of a theory I saw about Zack viewing the church as a place of healing and how it ties closely to his relationship with Aerith and the comfort he easily finds with her. He met her when everything he knew and trusted was beginning to fall apart, and in that storm she was there in her own little heaven, crafting her own happiness away from the world above and it's troubles. It's something he never realized he was lacking, a moment of peace from war and the active life of a SOLDIER. Although he's the kind to prefer to always be doing something, he needed to stop and think, especially after Angeal's alleged betrayal that he was desperate to understand. At these instances of confusion, he would turn to the church, to Aerith, whether they would stare at the flowers, have a simple conversation or do nothing at all, he almost always finds a sense of clarity at the end, maybe not a clear and definitive comprehension but peaceful acceptance. Zack isn't secretive and rather honest with his emotions, but he tends to avoid the negative, or more accurately, to stall it, always hoping he would find the best in the situation and turn any negativity into something of use. And So, he doesn't speak much of the unhappy, doesn't wish to bring anyone down with him. That said, even the brightest of people are bound to break, losing Angeal had a heavy impact on him, and in the haze of that raw ache he instinctively sought comfort from the one person who's presence alone would offer him healing, felt like he drop the act of bravery around her, letting his emotions flow without restraint, which is a telling sign of his deep trust in her.

With more older anime I watch that’s specifically about androids the more I noticed all the influence mega man pulled from it despite it not being a anime nor the robot timeline ever getting a proper anime but I think what gets me more then “the basis of mega man is like astro boy, casshern and POSSIBLY kikaider all in a blender with mega man x making the second two inspos more apparent” is realizing how many villain characters inspired proto man.

You have the obvious one, char from Gundam, you have rock holmes from Astro boy who’s not a confirmed one but seems to track given classic takes a lot of Astro boy influence and then you have Saburo from Android kikaider, the most likely inspo for proto in EVERY category- and then you remember how while these characters are evil for a complex reason, proto man really shines to be different as he changed his ways. He’s still a rival to his “brother” in a sense but bass takes more of the role of the evil mega man, while proto just watches from afar and comes in to help when he thinks he’s needed.

okay but consider maria’s “the only people that can betray us are the ones we trust” line having to do with how she lost kevin. like imagine he died because of someone she had decided to trust. maybe she decided to trust leaving him alone with his father, and they got in a situation where he decided to abandon him or put him in danger, thus being responsible for his death. maybe she had trusted the words of the soldiers rounding them up, expecting them to be taken care of alongside the rest of their rescued crowd, only for them to get shot at by those soldiers instead. maybe it was a random person she decided to trust that betrayed her and kevin and her father, resulting in kevin being killed somehow, so maria kills that person to finally make peace with that guilt. imagine murder mommy maria offing her betrayer for taking her baby away
