From worst to best

The trouble with Dragon is theres too much to work with so a design can get kinda messy. I think thats what happened here. Probably the only design I just dont like at all.

I get what they were doing with Fighting but... I dont think it really screams fighting to me. If they made the dress a coat and gave her the punk school uniform I think itd work better. But I dont hate it overall.

Doesnt scream Fire at all! How disappointing. I mean its a cute fit but I would have thought THIS was fighting before fire.

Thought this was Normal tbh... Its a really cute look so thats why I have it ranked higher than the others but they coulda done so much more with Psychic.

Ghost is so low because even tho it looks fine.... I think its a wasted concept. Theres SO much you could do with Ghost... Im not mad. Just disappointed.

For Rock... I mean its fine the diamond-queenly dress fit. I like the idea of the mismatched top but I think they coulda designed it better... I dont hate it. I do like her weird hair!

Fairy is super cute but in a boring way.

I REALLY like this design but for Steel... I just feel like they coulda did more with it. Its great tho!

Similar to Steel I like the design for Water. It obviously works but I kinda wish they did more of a mermaid thing than just a basic bathing suit.... Its cool tho. Love the tan lines.

Theres a few things that confuse me about Flying like her legs... but theres a lot here I like at least conceptually! If the socks were tight on her legs (and she didnt have weird white legs...) and the clear shorts was a skirt I'd like it a lot better.

Grass is super cute! Kinda wish they added flower elements to it but I like it a lot regardless. Very very cute.

I thought THIS was flying. I was like Oh they went colorful feathery etc for flying thats fun! ... WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS NORMAL?! BUT Regardless Normal can really be like anything and unlike with Dragon I think this is very cute.

LOVE Electric! Kinda wish it was a two piece suit but I get the coverall vibe of like a maintenance worker. I really like it! (except the clips in her hair.)

LOVE POISON. What a fun design... I kinda hate the shoes but like I GET them and its silly and fun.

Woulda thought THIS was Dragon but its Ground and I kinda love it. Doesnt necessarily invoke Ground to me but like desert rogue I guess works.

SO GOOD. I wish Rock got something as cool and dynamic as Ice did! Such a clean design. I dont get the green (shiny G. Darumaka has a green face? Maybe that...) But STILL. Fucking cool.

Bug is so PRECIOUS. Shes just fully a lil guy! Love her. Love the color pallet, love the subtle design. I didnt think Bug right away but it works.

I mean.... OBVIOUSLY. Dark is phenomenal. I love that her microphone umbrella also looks like a gun. She looks like a mob boss. Love her.

Tumblr Plays Pokemon White 2 - Part 4

Well my overall philosophy of exploration bore fruit!

Always remember kids, in a good game you can find pretty good items you may otherwise miss if you just take your time and explore a little!

Regardless my training at the Virbank Complex was interspersed with a guy asking me to "fire up" some of his new employees. Needing to train my team anyway, I took him up on the offer.

After defeating the first foreman with Aries I got a great surprise;

Aries evolved into Flaafy! She also learned Charge!

This training session is already bearing some pretty great fruit!

As I was defeating the workmen I also saw this scientist guy walking around the complex. Talking to him and hearing what he had to say netted me an ether! An item that actually restore pokemons pp! Its harder to find in the early game so I think I may hoard this for now.

Reporting back to the boss nets me the tm for rock smash. I'm collecting a decent number of tms!

After leaving in the VIrbank Complex I head to the pokemon center and buy some healing I get a few potions and antidotes, as well as soem super potions juuuust in case. I also decide to buy one heal ball and one net ball on the off chance they come in handy down the line.

Now its prep time!

I decide to start off by replacing Bentleys tackle attack with return. I also teach the same attack to Molly as well. I consider teaching one of the team work up but it turns out none of them are able to use the move. I then give each of my team members a pecha berry to hold so they can heal themselves if they get poisoned at the gym.

With that prep work complete I head to the Virbank gym.

While the last gym was a school, Virbanks Gym is an underground rock club of sorts.

This is where we find Roxie, but she and her band are rocking out so hard that she cant hear us asking for a battle! Guess we'll have to beat her bandmates to bring the music down enough to start our gym battle.

I choose to start with the drummer on the left.

I start off with Molly and he sends out a grimer. Mollys intimidate takes down his attack a stage and i opt to start out with an ember. Unfortunately Grimer immediately uses disable rending ember useless. I have Molly use return (cant remember if grimer can have poison point) and it hits, but grimer hits back. I have molly use leer and grimer uses poison gas which sadly poisons molly. Thankfully she eats the pecha berry I gave her and heals up. With grimers defense lowered I have Molly use return again which hits Grimer down ino the yellow, but unfortunately Grimer uses poison gas again and poisons Molly. Not wanting Aries or Bentley to use their pecha berries just yet I opt to keep Molly in. Ember is still disabled so I take grimer out with a return.

Next the drummer sends out Koffing and I get a message that ember is no longer disabled. I have Molly use Ember and manage to get a burn on Koffing. Koffing hits with assurance and molly is hurt by their poisoning. Luckily though Koffing is also hurt by their burn. I use an antdote on Molly to heal her up. Koffing takes the opportunity to hit with another assurance but is again hurt by their burn. I have Molly hit with return but it doesnt do much. One more ember and a bit of damage from the burn damage is enough to take koffing out.

I use a couple of potions on Molly to heal her up before taking on the guitarist on the right.

Once again I send in Molly and hte guitarist uses venipede. I have Molly start off with Ember which, it turns out, is super effective and takes venipede out in one hit! It must be the bug typing. This victory levels Molly up to level 16.

There is now only Koffing to deal with, and remembering how the last koffing tanked return I decide to rely on special attacks here and have Molly use Ember which takes Koffing down to half health and burns it. Another ember is enough to take it out.

Molly is really the MVP of this gym! Tbh I was expecting it to be Aries. I dont even need to heal up with a potion before facting Roxie. However before I face the gym leader I do take Bentleys pecha berry and give it to Molly while moving Bentley to the front of the party. I then give Bentley the silk scarf in the hopes that it will power up his Return attack.

I don't expect Bentley to do much in this fight since grass is weak to poison, but given what a murder bean Bentley was at the start of the adventure I doubt he'd be content with sitting out.

With that I face off against Roxie.

Roxie starts off with Koffing naturally enough. I opt to Bentley start of with Growth increasing his attack. Koffing hits with a supereffective smog, and I have Bentley set up another growth. I'm hoping to get a very stron ghit here. Koffing hits with assurance bring Bentley into the yellow. I then make a critical mistake and misclick another growth rather than an attack and Koffing hits Bentley with another smog. Not wanting to waste al those growths I opt to have Bentley use vinewhip. even though it wont be very effective. Which it sadly is not. Bentley is then KO'd by Koffing.

This ones on me not Bentley. Really could have played that smarter.

Wanting to save Molly for whatever pokemon Roxie has next, I send in Aries. Remembering that Koffin tanked return, I'm guess this guy must have high defense so Aries special attacks should do better here. Even so just to be safe I start off with a thunder wave to paraylze koffing and then use charge to power Aries up. Koffing hits with a tackle but it does barely anything. I have Aries use thundershock and its enough to take Koffing out in one hit!

Booyah Aries!

Roxie then sends out her next pokmeon, Whirlipede. If Whirlipede is a bug type like Scolipede was swapping in to Molly should be effective here. However I decide to leave Aries in. Her paralysis may be the best way to keep Whirlipede from using any moves that might poison my team.

So I do just that and have Aries use thunderwave right off the bat. Whirlipede gets paralyzed but still manages a pursuit. I have Aries use cotton spore to slow whirlipede down, and Whirlipede hits with venoshock for half of Aries health. Hoping to get lucky with paralysis I have Aries use charge to power up for an attack. Whirlipede used Venoshock again, but thanks to charge increasing Aries special defense it doesnt KO. Whilipede is paralyzed the next round and I have Aries use Thundershock which doesnt do as much as I hoped. I decide to use cotton spore again next round. If Aries cant beat Whirlipede i can at least make it slow for Molly. Whirlipede hits with another pursuit and I have Aries use another thundershock. Unfortunately Whirlipede uses protect and the damage fails to land. I repeat the same tactic next round but it only chips whirlipede. Whirlipede hits with another pursuit taking Aries out.

While two of my team members are down I'm not out. I send in Molly knowing Whirlipede is weakened alread and with Mollys intimidate its attack drops as well. Aries part comes through as Whirlipede is paralyzed and one ember is all it takes to beat Whilipede and win us the badge!

Thankfully Roxies a graceful loser and gives us the Toxic Badge for beating her. Now any pokemon up to level 30 will obey us. She also gives us the tm for venoshock.

I'm fairly certain Bentleys disappointed he lost, but he'll rebound.

Immediately after we step off the stage a stranger approaches and asks us to go to pokestar studios. Mention of the place sends Roxie running off after her dad.

C'mon Roxie whats the worst that can happen here?

I head towards pokestar studios but stop at the pokemon center on the way to heal up my pokemon after that gym battle and head to the north of Virbank

So we walk in and the same stranger who talked to us back in Virbank Gym sees us and introduces us to the boss Mr... Stu Deeoh.

I am not making this up.

Some parent out there really had the last name Deeoh and named their kid Stu. And that kid then proceeded to go into filmmaking.

I just.... what life does this man have?!

Be honest dude. Did your parents hate you? Are they dead? Did you kill them to inherent their money but mostly because they named you Stu Deeoh?

You and Alder must go to the same bar or something because you are dodging the question.

I get a tour of the studio and meed Roxies dad in the lobby. Hes apparently just shot a film? Which was... fast? Are... are these cheap B movies? I hope its cheap B movies cause otherwise its something else and this is supposed to be a kids game.

So Roxies dad pressure me into watching his movie to get "acting tips" from a "professional".

taylor in an au where goh had to pick a kanto starter (as his first pokemon, like in place of scorbunny/in place of mew), which one do you think he would choose?

oh this is SUCH a good question. flashing back to episode one of the anime when ash is thinking about the pros of each starter…LOL. i think goh would be INCREDIBLY turned off of the idea of raising a bulbasaur bc its “good for beginners,” but i do think even if only for symbolic reasons (jn003, it's no.1 in the pokedex, etc.) it’s the best pick for him?

like ok this SOUNDS kinda out of pocket and i have a hard time imagining him actively Picking bulbasaur bc he's definitely more like...energetic, and that does reflect in the pokemon he has in the show? his first pokemon is a fire type. but it's also one he bonded with because of its Circumstances. like obviously goh saw some of his loner outcast self in scorbunny - as well as a lot of his stubbornness and determination to prove his worth. this alone makes me think he would Want to pick charmander. it's harder to train, which makes it more of a challenge. and charizard is an impressive pokemon! i think he would be compelled by that.

but. BUT. i think he wouldn't really be Able to choose based strictly on the merits of the species. like...he would be drawn to a certain kind of Personality. would a bulbasaur exhibit such a personality? tbh, probably not! but i'm standing by this because i feel like it Makes Sense. like bulbasaur is a very lax pokemon. generally more social than certain other starter pokemon. in many ways very opposite to goh, which is why i think they would make a good pair. i can see the union happening only one of two ways, however

1 - he's like. i dont care i'll just take whatever one. i only need a pokemon so i can catch mew anyway doesnt matter as long as it can battle. [trying hard not to care but caring deeply] OR

2 - bulbasaur is foisted upon him largely against his will and he's initially very put-off by that because like. this isn't what i asked for wtf BUT THEN...they have to learn to Communicate with each other and it's a very eye-opening experience that makes him appreciate how different pokemon are from each other and like. reinforces his motivation to study more pokemon and learn about them...bulbasaur being a social pokemon would ultimately be very valuable, because in his goal of Catching Every Pokemon, there are going to be some times when he gets over-enthusiastic and fumbles a difficult catch or w/e so having a pokemon that is a good communicator with other pokemon would absolutely be a huge asset to him. but like. again. he'd need to See the benefits before he would actually pick bulbasaur. idk how it would happen other than someone forcing him to do it LMAO

so anyway. tl;dr i think he'd want to pick charmander. but the most suitable choice for him would be bulbasaur :p

I personally do think that the music portion of Project Voltage shouldve been typing themed because not just because thats what the art did, but itd ascertain each song being unique and creative in terms of sound and message.

As neat as its been, I get the sense that every song is just going to say "Pokemon is and was cool, huh?" which is, like, "Yeah...thats why this collab exists. Can we talk about anything else-" Like, that message is fine and dandy as a one off song (e.g. Gotcha by Bump of Chicken; I definitely thought there was another MV before it but I cant find it so I guess that was my imagination, haha)! But for 18 songs in a row...its gonna get old, lol.

[THIS ENDED UP LONGER THAN I ANTICIPATED, CLICK FOR MORE BUT IM SAVING YOU SCROLLING!!!!!!!!!]

I was gonna say Volt Tackle is the only one that says anything beyond "Pokemon is cool!" in a very classically Deco*27 fashion of making electricity/Volt Tackle/battling a love metaphor in general and Miku's pursuits in relationships, but that actually does Inubakumori a disservice since they also focus more on the experience of a being behind a screen trying to connect with the you beyond it (admittedly still need to ponder this a bit more, tbh) AND is genuinely the most unique in terms of OST choices.

MitchieM's music isnt really my thing in the first place, but it being composed of puns--while endearing--also feels like it doesnt say much else other than "Pokemon is cool, huh?" heavily depending on the Pokemon presence (tho Miku's design is real cute in it, hehe). With PinocchioP, as sentimental and heartfelt to the point it made me cry, it also conveyed pretty much the same thing (MV was most visually impressive to me tho; the little Miku's dressed as Pokemon, ahhh!!!).

Like, to an extent, I can accept the choice to not do a typing theme in favor of emphasizing each producer's style without restraint, but the kicker is using the same OST. Like, not only is the message going to be the same, Im kind of futilely hoping to see anything more than battle and Pokemon Center themes in the future songs! Its gonna be predictable and lose its luster, unfortunately!

I didnt even like Inabakumori's Electric Forecast that much at first because Im more into fast paced energetic music (Volt Tackle is probably my fave), but it ranks, stands out, and impresses me over the other two because it used SO MANY different themes, arguably probably the most out of all the released songs so far? Im being easily impressed because Electric Forecast used BURGH'S GYM THEME and the DIVING THEME and the Viridian Forest theme and the Kimono Girl's theme- Inabakumori is relatively new compared to the other 3 and they blew me away not because they somehow have more passion than the others but they...I guess, were experimental! Didnt play it safe! Actually took a deeper look into this 27 year old franchise's IMMENSE collection of music than just sticking to the basics! Not to say they DIDNT used the Pokemon Center theme or a battle theme, but they also did SO MUCH MORE than that in comparison to the others.

Theres was just so much opportunity in the typing theme, I dont think its too big of an ask considering, again, Pokemon's gigantic library of music. A town/route that had environments suitable for a specific type, a notable trainer who used a specific type, miscellaneous themes that give the vibe of a certain type, there was just so much they could do...!

I dunno, its incredibly too soon to be disappointed with this project, but Im just...airing out my feelings, I guess? Id love to be proven wrong, so looking forward to future releases! In the meantime, I point towards Polkadot Stingray's entry in the Pokemon Music Collective, "Ghost Dive," which I think is incredibly impressive and what I had in mind for Project Voltage if they committed to the typing theme. The way it incorporates the themes, the sound effects, the lyrics referring to Ghost-type/adjacent abilities, its also about someone who's a Ghost type fan, so it couldve been the best of all worlds...! And they didnt have to do that at all. Such a good job and banger, truly.

rant about lotk that i suddenly remembered

totally valid if you enjoy the series or the points im abt to mention, these just b my opinions

worldbuilding / aesthetics i distinctly as a just started middle schooler being disappointed by the designs 'modernized' world i'd so come to love. ie, the western/european industrial revolution influences. sure, historically, due to colonization imperialism etc from western powers that's how a lot of it happened (to my understanding); but for me there was no 'europe' equivalent in the atla world,,,, so like where would those visual influences b coming from??? tbh it's less even 'oh it doesnt make sense in-world' but more just wanting to imagine what modernized asian aesthetics would look like sans western influence. i'd also hate to equate 'modernization' with 'westernization'. Perhaps sth like an AsianFuturism. for me it felt like a shame that the creators couldn't imagine more tech advanced asian cultures without the influence of the western world. This was also the desire of a younger me, pre-Asian American media boom (think starting somewhere around crazy rich asians, EEAAO, Michelle Yeoh, etc), back when i almost literally never seen ppl who looked like me portrayed meaningfully not even gonna lie i thought the giant statue of aang was cringe LMAO,,, i was like bro this isn't manhattan like hello????? like to me if aang were to be memorialized in world that's not how it would look.

2. explaining too much/avatar wan's arc again, completely valid if you enjoyed this part. i just personally didn't care for it.

i felt like it was explaining sth that didn't need to be explained, and then explained in an overly literal way that didn't add to the overall work. for me spirits/spiritualism/the avatar were a deeply ingrained given part of the world. the avatar especially was just a built-in self-regulation mechanism (essentially a guaranteed diplomat who has had to live/experience cultures of the 4 dominant nations)

then the way the first avatar was explained felt overly literal; the world of spirits/spiritualism became just a gigantamax pokemon fight - oh, who's the bigger spirit??? will they have the muscles to beat the other meanie spirit????? rather than spirits being portrayed as sth just beyond mortal understanding, ineffable & transdimensional, fickle beings in their own right. Even the spirits who appear frightening or uncomfortable weren't portrayed as necessarily 'bad,' they were just spirits, and with that came with their own moral codes that human perceptions didn't strictly apply to. and like also the raava/vaatu dichotomy was stupid. it reverts to (tired) white = good and black = bad tropes. and also yin/yang DOES NOT mean good/bad LIKE PLEASE. in general i feel like a lot of the tlok plot points came from a (unecessary imo) need to explain everything, make sure everything was black&white (ha), either good or bad, rather than the complex morality a lot of OG atla writing portrayed and further implied. Reminds me of famous concept artist Lorraine O'Grady's essay 'Olympia's Maid' (ctrl F "both: and" to jump to the sections im referencing), critiquing Western 'either:or'ism that struggles to accept the multiplicity of "both:and"ism having watched atla, my questions weren't 'oh how did the avatar come to be?' i was more curious to see different corners of the world, different expressions of the cultures of the four nations (we've seen the swamp benders, the sun warriors, what else was out there? one of the more frustrating things abt bdsp is that even tho they stressed that “itll be just like playing the old ones” its still off from the originals in a lot of ways. and some of the new scripted events just show me that the company couldve made this like hgss and oras but chose not to

#like dont get me wrong some of the qol changes are nice like the capsules being earlier #and the grand underground is great now that ive tried it #but for where im at… yeah platinum had better qol features and this game doesnt have a good amount of them #and theres also the fact that this was a game made for the ds so many of those features like the poketch #just dont fit in well w the switch at all #using the touch screen on switch is really awkward and not satisfying tbh #echoed voice #and many ppl have mentioned the art style in this regard but yeah. the art sticks out like a sore thumb #its not just that itd 3d its that these designs were clearly made w 2d sprites in mind and dont translate well into 3d #tbf this is a consistent issue w pokemon tho like even in scivi u can see multiple designs just look so off #bc it feels lile characters like jacq were made for a 2d setting and not a 3d one

Different preferences in flight/eye color (the host is in one flight and i hated the eyes so so much that i chose a different flight)

Jealousy over the progens (not why I made my account, but why someone else in the system made their own account, they wanted real progens for lore i think idk i dont talk to them lol)

Wanted to play in "hard mode" like a nuzzlock like in pokemon where if a dragon faints in coli they get exalted but didn't want to get anyone else in the system involved (i think they are insane (affectionate) for doing this)

One of us thought that the pressure of a well-developed clan was too much and wanted to start over where there were less things to do (idk how they didnt get bored tbh i hated when my account was brand new and i didnt have projects to work on/didnt have treasure or gems to do anything because i had to start from scratch)

And lastly: cannot share for jack shit unfortunately. Host is a g1 lair who doesnt breed and a lot of us wanted to breed and the host had like 200 g1s and no lair space and we were constantly out of money and couldn't expand anymore because they KEPT BUYING G1S

We don't interact with each other at all, not even on the friendlists, because if we WERE to interact at all, then at that point we might as well share the account in the first place, like no point in funneling because at that point we'd just.... share an account? We made our own accounts so we could do our own things, we don't really see it as multiaccounting because we're completely different people, to us it'd be like if your roommate played the same game as you

forgive me if the question was rhetorical, but in totk link doesn't have to dress up as a girl to get in gerudo town anymore. i dont think the gerudo that sells you the girl outfit is seen in the game this time? not to my knowledge, anyways. link is recognised in gerudo town as the dude who saved everyone and is a close friend of riju's, and so is the only man allowed in. i haven't even seen the girl outfit in totk, but maybe thats just me, so take it with a pinch of salt

unfortunately though, there is a larger presence of creeps trying to get in? theres a guise of "haha we're just trying to do business with them!" thats obviously fake, but im not quite sure what their intentions are but its just a bit uncomfortable to include tbh. one is seen actually inside gerudo town, sneaking around and afraid of getting caught.

the slightly good news is that theres a pretty feminine outfit link can wear without any of the bizzare implications or orientalism. its just a cute outfit with a nice status boost (to my understanding) & theres a larger presence of darker skinned/black coded hylians that aren't exoticised like the gerudo are. bare minimum but i guess we can take what we're given

i really wish that nintendo would be normal about the gerudo and stuff (even giving the other races a little big of language so the gerudo dont seem so Other when they say voe/vai/savaaq etc) but alas, baby steps i guess
