Chapter 2 of my TMA x MBMBAM crack fic is up! (Chapter 1) Thanks so much to everyone who’s read it so far!
---
Justin cleared his throat and began. “Well, we were thinking about going on vacation, so we were waiting until we had some free time-“
“Not that we work hard,” Travis interrupted. “Not like you guys with your files and- are those tape recorders?”
“And we then we all got sick for like two weeks, so we figured we needed a break,” Justin finished. “So we wanted to go to Europe-“
“Gotta get out of the states, you know. It’s uhhh not great right now,” Griffin said. “And-“
“And we decided on London. You know, to- tae sae Bahg Baen,” Justin said, in what Jon guessed was an atrocious attempt at a Scottish accent. The voice didn’t go unnoticed, however, as the two brothers pounced immediately.
“No, no, no it’s Boig Boin-“
“Bae Baen-“
“Beyblades? Are you talking about fucking Beyblades, Travis?”
Jon rubbed his temples and resisted the urge to shout down the hall for Martin- hell, maybe Daisy or Basira could help scare them into giving a proper statement. He had to admit, he was a bit confused with what was going on- usually when people gave a statement, it was in a more listenable way, getting rid of all the feelings (and trauma) that clouded the statement. But these brothers sat in front of him, seemingly rambling about some thing that had happened to them, and they didn’t seem to care at all.
Jon attempted to focus back in to the conversation. The brothers seemed to be arguing about whether the Dick Van Dyke accent from Mary Poppins counted as a real English accent.
“-and the whole movie takes place in London, Griffin, so what I don’t know why you would think that it didn’t count-”
“Oh, just because the movie takes place in London, huh Travis? So if I started talking about ‘puttin it on the barbie’ in Niu Yawk-”
“Gross, Griffin, what are you putting on the barbie?”
“Yeah, c’mon Griff.”
“Gentlemen,” Jon said firmly, a faint crackle of compulsion in his voice. The McElroys sat up straight, as if shocked by lightning. “Please. Continue.”
Justin’s eyes narrowed slightly, and he started speaking again. “Well, the point is that we ended up taking a trip to London town-”
“Something no-one but our dad says,” Griffin muttered under his breath.
“-and we were out at one of the pubs here, having some drinks after our flight landed.”
“It ended up just being us three, since our wives decided to stay in the states because of all the traveling we’ve been doing recently. My wife, Teresa, in particular-”
Jon stubbornly ignored the chorus of “My wife” that erupted around the room. Justin’s face was beet red from trying not to laugh at his own joke, while Griffin looked at him, stonefaced and shrugging. Jon was surprised that his compulsion seemed to be wearing off almost immediately. At this point, he was wondering if he was going to be more hungry after this statement than he was before it.
“Anyway it’s just us in London right now. So we were in a bar-”
“Pub-”
“And we were leaving around 1 AM? We were pretty, uhh, out of it-” “Drunk- we don’t have to leave a good impression on this guy, Justin, we’re just telling him about how we saw Daz,” Griffin corrected.
“I’m getting to it,” Justin said, glaring at Griffin. He turned to Jon, holding his hands out in a “see-what-I’m-dealing-with” position. “Daz is, well, I mean, I’m getting to it.”
“We were leaving the pub-bar, and we were slightly stumbling to the street. Not like falling down drunk, but definitely tripping every few steps drunk,” Justin continued. “Travis was the worst off since he tried to drink a cocktail with a pie slice on top of it-”
“It was definitely worth it,” Travis said, pulling out his phone. “Let me show you a picture-”
“And when we were outside of the bar-pub, we heard someone ask if we had a cigarette.”
“Was he in the alley?” Jon asked, startled. This story was starting to sound shockingly familiar. If the angler-fish was active again, then it mean that the Stranger had already recovered from their attempted Unknowing.
“Yeah!” Griffin chimed in. “He was leaning against the wall like a gangster from the 60s. Have you seen Grease? Because he looked like-”
“Griffin, I swear to god, if you are going to say that Daz looks like John Travolta from Grease,” Justin exasperatedly interrupted. “Then I will be forced to-”
“I meant his posture, Juice,” Griffin said, rolling his eyes. “Y’know, one leg up like a fuckin’ cool guy.”
“Yeah, that’s what makes someone cool, Griff,” Travis laughed. “One leg up means a fuckin’ cooooool guy.”
Justin raised his voice over Griffin and Travis’ laughter. “The guy in the alley was in the shadows at first, so we couldn’t see him. None of us had any little, uh, smoke sticks on us, so we said no and were about to walk away.”
Griffin and Travis erupted into another round of laughter at Justin’s choice of words. When he was sure all three of them were distracted, Jon allowed himself a little smile.
“But the guy didn’t give up,” Justin continued, getting a little solemn. “He stepped a little out of the shadows and we were able to see him a little more clearly.”
“He looked like a normal dude at first. Like anyone you would see on the street,” Travis said, picking up where his brother had left off. “But as he kept getting closer, he felt, ummm, I guess off is the best way to put it?”
Griffin let out a bark of laughter. “Really, Trav? Is that the best you, a New York Times best-selling author can do?” Griffin put on a voice that Jon guessed was one crafted and honed over many years with a singular purpose of annoying his brothers. “Oh yeah, man he felt like, off I guess? I dunno, I haven’t learned anything past o in the alphabet.”
Justin burst into laughter as Travis pouted. “You describe him then, Griffin! Sorry I wasn’t trying to be all poetic and shit like in one of your cutscenes-”
“Hey, my cutscenes aren’t just poetic. They’re masterpieces in literature.”
Travis rolled his eyes at that and flipped Griffin off, which Griffin responded to by sticking his tongue out. Jon Saw™ a brief flash of hours upon hours of family dinners, many of which had gone the same way, and felt the chill in the back of his spine start to dissipate.
“I’ll give it a crack, though,” Griffin said. “I thought it was pretty clear why he looked off. He was too smooth.”
Jon took a bit longer than it should have to process that statement. “Excuse me?”
“I mean, I guess specifically his face was too smooth,” Griffin explained. “Like it would have been as if he did one of those Korean face mask treatments, but every day, since he was a baby.”
“How would you even put one of those on a baby?” Justin mused, leaning back in his chair.
“I bet you’d have to cut one of them up,” Travis answered. “Unless-”
“Unless-” Justin and Griffin answered back, almost immediately. Jon felt like he was watching a play at this point.
“Unless that’s our next business idea for when we get back! Baby face masks!” The three of them laughed heartily, only stopping to chant in unison, “TM TM TM.”
“But that’s what I meant!” Griffin said, trying to get back on track. “His nose was slightly crooked, but his skin was so smooth, it looked like it was merging back into his face. His mouth was stretched out until it was like the width of his face, and, it wasn’t like it was in the wrong place, it looked like it was supposed to be there. He had these black spots all over his face, but they didn’t look like birthmarks or anything, it was like those parts of his face were, I don’t know, sunken, but still, they were so smooth. Everything about his face was so rubbery and plasticky, I mean it was like-”
“Like he wasn’t a real person,” Jon finished. There was a silence in the office that hadn’t been there since the McElroys had walked in.
“Yeah,” Justin said, breaking the awkwardness.
“How did you know he was, what was the phrase you used, a video game monster?” Jon asked curiously.
“Well, we do this Youtube series called Monster Factory,” Justin explained. “And by me, I mean me and Griffin, because Travis is too busy trying to get into Supernatural or whatever-”
“It’s going to happen!”
“And one of the monsters we made was based off of late great character actor Dennis Farina.”
“Who-”
“Don’t worry about it,” Griffin said hurriedly. “I didn’t know who he was either, and I was in the video with him.”
“Well we took a facescan of Dennis Farina in some golf game and we really messed him up. I mean like, really rogered him right up. Actually,” Justin pulled out his phone and showed Jon a picture of a video game character mid-golf swing that did look “real rogered up”.
“So when he came up to us and asked us for a cigarette again, we got a better look at him in the light. His hair stood out too- it was all blocky instead of smooth like his skin. Like it was low-res,” Griffin said.
“And everyone knows, your hair doesn’t look like your skin,” Travis told Jon, in a faux-educational voice.
“And,” Griffin said pointedly, “his head was moving.”
“Moving?”
“Like he was- like he was breathing through his head. It was pulsing, like really slowly, but I definitely saw it.” Griffin shuddered. “Honestly- one of the top ten grossest things I’ve ever seen.”
“What about what happened today with the bugs and Slime-” Justin asked.
“Top ten means that there are other events on there,” Griffin said. “The use of the number ten instead of-”
“How did you get away?” Jon interrupted. This didn’t sound too much like the anglerfish since it could move around, but it still gave off hints of the Stranger. And if it was-
Travis muttered something under his breath, and Griffin elbowed his side. “I said, I yartzed on him,” Travis said reluctlantly, as Griffin stifled some laughter.
Jon shook his head slightly, as if trying to dislodge some rocks from his ear. “I’m sorry?”
“I yartzed! I threw up on his shoes, and we kind of just ran. We would’ve paid him for his shoes-”
“You would’ve,” Justin said, crossing his arms.
“But we were all kinda drunk, and he was really, really creepy. Y’know. Off.”
Jon sat up a little straighter, running a hand through his hair. “You… threw up. On the shoes of something that you don’t even think was human.”
“I mean, we didn’t say that yet,” Griffin said, jumping in. “Butttttt yeah. That’s pretty much what happened.”
“Things were pretty buckwild that night,” Justin said brightly. “But I mean that’s nothing compared to what happened earlier today.”
“Today- what do you mean today?” Jon said, confused. “Did something else happen?”
The McElroys looked at each other, each mentally telling the other to speak. Travis lost, sighing and saying, “Yeah, we saw another one of them today. And-and that’s why we’re here! Because-”
“Well, we want to stop seeing them, for one,” Griffin said. “But also, if this is some sort of weird nightmare hell realm pattern thing, where we keep seeing them, there’s one character we reallly, really don’t want to run into.”
Jon gripped the table, as he Saw™. “The Final Pam.”

I Hope You Don’t Mind
Request: Okie doke sooooooo....... if requests for the prompt thing are still open....... could I please request #2 and #6 (strange probably, I knowww), and with exo chanyeol pretty please? Maybe angst with fluff? Pretty much anything except smut haha if that's okay? 💙😋
2) “Okay…so like…there’s only a 30% chance that we’ll die.” 6) “My nightmares usually involve losing you.”
Member: EXO Chanyeol x Y/N
Type: angst/fluff
You chewed on the inside of your lip as your shoulders settled deeper into the back of the couch. You checked the hour on your phone for what seemed to be the thirtieth time and heaved an even more dramatic sigh. Looking up from your screen, you surveyed the men around you, none the wiser of your growing annoyance.
You bit your inner lip especially hard and winced, not intending to catch the sensitive skin. You unlocked your phone again to stare at your background image. It was a cheesy photo of yourself and your boyfriend, Chanyeol. Somewhere in the background loomed Baekhyun, the constant fixture in your lives, and Kyungsoo, staring icily at the camera. You enjoyed having a constant reminder of your boys every time you searched for an app. You couldn’t imagine life without them.
But on days like today, you couldn’t help but begin to imagine.
Dating an idol, and being close with members of an idol group, wasn’t all that fangirls dreamed for it to be.
You started there as well. When you moved to Korea, you had idols in your eyes, and hopes in your heart. You had listened to Korean pop music since you had been in high school and as soon as you had the chance to study and teach in the country, you jumped at it. You were pleased when you were offered a position at a private institute in Seoul and promptly moved yourself and your belongings to a place you never thought you would be.
It didn’t take long for you to establish a life in your new home. You found friends, hobbies, and even adopted a pet. You had begun playing instruments and often frequented the small music store just down the block from your apartment. And that was where you met Chanyeol.
It was a rainy day and you didn’t have much planned. You figured you would stop by to pick up a fresh pack of guitar strings, when you found him holding the exact brand you normally purchased.
And poetically, it was the last package.
You knew who he was on sight. As mentioned previously, you were familiar with the world of Korean pop, and you had to be living under a rock to not know who EXO was. Against your best efforts, you attempted to play it cool, but made a complete fool of yourself. You tripped over your own shoe strings and careened toward a drum set when he tried to catch you, but only perpetuated your fall. In a mix of limbs, you fell together.
In more ways than one.
And now you were here. Sitting on the relatively smelly couch in EXO’s studio while Kyungsoo and Chanyeol poked and prodded at the soundboard. Baekhyun stood in the booth, stifling a yawn as he adjusted the large headphones resting on his ears. Chen rested on the couch beside you, his legs on your lap as he began to doze. You had arrived about two hours ago with the promise of dinner and a possible movie. Instead you were greeted with 25% of a disgruntled EXO who vowed they were immovable until they finished their task.
Which you knew could take all night.
Chanyeol had smiled apologetically at you and offered up his spot on the couch as he joing Kyungsoo’s side. He knew just as well as you that you might as well go home.
But you were too stubborn for that.
You were ripped from your thoughts by his deep voice as he swiveled his office chair to gaze at you.
“You must be tired, jagi,” he hummed. “Why don’t you head home? Before it gets too late?”
“And you must be hungry,” you grumbled. “I haven’t seen you eat and you’ve been in her since who knows when.”
“I know when,” Chen sighed. He didn’t even bother opening his eyes as he readjusted his legs. “Since like two this afternoon.”
“It is now ten p.m.,” you nodded. “You need to stop and at the very least get take out.”
“Why don’t you get us food?” Kyungsoo asked, his eyes wide with innocence as he swiveled around as well. “That would save us some time.”
“You want me to get you food?” you whispered. You were unsure if it was the pent up annoyance of the day or the fact that you were hungry yourself, but you could feel the anger begin to rise in your gut.
“I mean if you don’t mind,” Chanyeol said quietly, sensing the change of tone in your voice.
“Hey!” Bakehyun’s voice came from the booth. “You guys aren’t saying anything! Are we going again? This stool makes my butt numb!”
You looked from Chanyeol’s face to Kyungsoo’s and back again. Sometimes it took only one, tiny straw to break the camel’s back.
But damn, did that one straw feel heavy.
“Actually, I do mind,” you said shortly. You stood up, nearly knocking Chen from the couch. “And before you all invite me over for dinner again, try to be considerate.”
You picked up your bag and stormed from the room, making sure to slam the door behind you. Your face felt hot with the emotion of the situation. You closed your eyes, immediately feeling something similar to embaressment sweep over you.
This wasn’t the first time you had been pushed to a second priority position, so why did you throw a temper tantrum? You hated appearing that way in front of Chanyeol’s members, and especially Chanyeol himself. You felt like a child when you acted like that, selfish, and begging for attention. Somethings were apparently more important than you and you thought you had come to understand that.
You gasped as you felt something suddenly slam into your back. You flew forward and landed on your hands and knees only to have the same thing (which you had now identified as a person) to land on you again.
You groaned as you pulled yourself out from under the heavy bodyweight. That groan immediately turned into a sigh as you recognized a red-faced Chanyeol.
“Chanyeollie?” you asked. You rubbed at your elbow as you scooted to the side of the hallway and leaned against the wall. Everything already ached from his crash landing.
“I was trying to hurry before you got on the elevator,” he huffed, pushing himself up. “But apparently I didn’t need to get that far.”
“Apparently,” you nodded.
“Are you okay?” he sighed, crawling across the carpet to sit on the floor beside you.
“Define okay,” you whispered. You closed your eyes so you wouldn’t have to look at him. The issue with dating Chanyeol was, it was almost like dating a puppy, It was near impossible to stay angry when he was staring at you with his baby face.
“All Kyungsoo did was ask if you could grab us food,” Chanyeol hummed. “You’ve done it a dozen times.”
“As per usual, you are missing the point,” you grumbled. You began to pull yourself up from your sitting position, but Chanyeol instantly tugged you back down.
“Then explain it to me,” he cooed. He turned to face you, his legs criss crossed, and eyes attentive. He looked like a kindergartner on the first day of school, ready to learn.
“It’s much easier to just go home and pout,” you whined.
“Come here,” he sighed, opening his arms wide. You rolled your eyes at the cuteness in his gesture.
“I’m not sitting on your lap, Chanyeol,” you grumbled.
“Oh, but I think you are,” he grinned, wrapping his long arms around you and pulling you in close. He nestled his cheek on your shoulder and took a deep breath in, careful to enjoy the way your laundry detergent and perfume mingled. “Now, tell me what you’re thinking.”
“I’m thinking that sometimes life is hard,” you muttered. “And I need to just suck it up.”
“Because?” He prompted.
“Because I knew when we entered a relationship that music would always be your first love,” you nodded. “And it took me some time to come to peace with that, and sometimes it’s hard to remember. Ultimately, putting up with your career and your work ethic is something I’ll do. I guess while your career is climbing the charts...my biggest nightmare is that I’ll get lost along the way.”
“Oh, jagi,” Chanyeol cooed, pushing his face further into your shoulder. “Not once had I thought that I loved music more than you. It’s a different kind of love. Music is in my soul and I compose because I am compelled to. It’s in my DNA to work in the studio and push myself to be better. For myself, and for my team, and for you. You’re my muse and you help me get even better at what I do. I find comfort in my music, but ultimately, I find comfort in you. You don’t have to worry about your nightmare, because my biggest nightmares usually involve losing you.”
“Really?” you whispered. You reached up and wrapped your arms around his neck, hit with the emotions he was conveying.
Normally Chanyeol had no issue with telling you how he was feeling. He could shower you in verbal affirmations for days and you wouldn’t blink an eye. He loved to love and be loved in return. This was a conversation you had never had before though, and it hit you deeper than your normal discussions of “i love you,” He had written every song and every letter you thought he possibly could, but nothing had touched you like this conversation had.
“Really,” he confirmed. “And sometimes...in situations like the one we were just in, you have to knock some sense into us. We are so deep and concentrated on what we’re doing, it’s difficult for us to come up for air. You have to yank us away, for our health and your sanity.”
“No offense,” you grinned. “But I’d rather not be murdered by Kyungsoo.”
“Okay...so like...there’s only a 30% chance that we’ll die,” Chanyeol smiled in return. “We need someone to take care of us sometimes. I think he knows that too.”
“When did I become the designated caregiver?” you sighed.
“When you fell in love with me,” he whispered, placing a light kiss on your jaw. “I hope you don’t mind.”
You shook your head and leaned back to get a better view of your boyfriend’s handsome face. “Well, I guess not.”

underrated bts tracks
OKAY EVERYBODY STOP BECAUSE I HAVE A very SERIOUS DILEMMA
there seems to be some very evident and obvious under-appreciation for a few bangtan tracks that i MUST HIGHLIGHT (especially to all you newcomers to the fandom). Honestly these songs do not get talked about enough (or enough anymore) and there is a need to bring these songs (back) into the spotlight!!
so here we go, here is my list of underrated bts tracks that you NEED in your life on repeat over and over:
Tumblr media
1. Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment In Life (Pt. 1) - HYYH Pt. 1
okay let’s start with the absolutely insane composition of the song
the BUILD UP OF INTENSITY
and then that GASP OF AIR IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS (suga’s) INTENSE GROWLY RAP
and can we just talk about the first bit of the song
where suga uses the bounce of a basketball and the squeak of shoes against the court floor to accompany the fucking bass?!!?
so fcking well done holy shit
the way his rap FLOWS is so captivating???
the way he says his own name is just filled with so much swag i cannot
just overall it’s an amazing track
makes you feel all powerful, angry, empowered, and is such a good song when you feel so intense and bottled up with emotions
you just sit down and listen to this song and you feel like it GETS YOU
the lyrics are so poetic too
and just so REAL and captivating to read (or listen to if you understand korean)
one of my fav tracks of yoongi’s if i’m being real oh my god GO GIVE IT SOME LOVE
one word to describe it: one-of-a-kind
2. Hip Hop Lover/Phile - Dark&Wild
THIS SONG
one word to describe it: bangtan
its very edgy and very R&B which is refreshing
FIRSTLY, namjoon’s intro rap to the song
it just showcases everything namjoon is
a leader, a rapper, an ARTIST
and then the switch up (that bts is SO GOOD at) from fast/intense rap to smooth vocals that compliment everything SO well
we hear jungkook and taehyung’s vocals accompanied by the rest of them just chanting their LOVE for hip hop
and then JHOPE comes in and FUCK ME
his flow is on a different level
not better but it’s so different and refreshing and adds so much dimension to the song i cant even
and jimin and jin’s vocals (even though i wish we could hear jin more i cri)
AND THEN SUGA HOOOMGGGG
just switches up the flow with the bridge
there’s just SO MUCH to this song
and everything just fits SO well
by far a song that showcases a lot of what bts IS and what they LOVE
and I ADORE EVERY BIT
3. Move - HYYH Pt. 1
AYO SUGAAAA
this one is especially for all the new ARMYs who may not know this song
summarised in one word: masterpiece
it’s a very emotional song
it has that nostalgic vibe to it (which makes sense after you read the lyrics)
one word to describe this song: FEELS
some of my fav lyrics are:
‘we cried a lot and laughed a lot but it was so beautiful’
‘as much as the place was small, we were bound together tighter’
and also namjoon’s last words at the end just warm my heart
just the beat and everything too
again, i just love the way bts bring such LIFE to these songs
the rap doesn’t go hard, but it’s still very edgy and works with the vibe
idk how to explain it??
imo taehyung’s voice especially works so well with this song
jhope’s rap and voice brings a very chill vibe to the song in contrast to namjoon and yoongi’s
and i’m just talking about the sound (not what the actual lyrics are saying)
and jin’s voice compliments the song really well too
and suga’s rap starts out soft and then he brings it just expressing his feelings and becomes very personal about it too and UGH I LOVE
overall the song is very personal and true to the group as a whole which makes it all very touching
4. Whalien 52 - HYYH Pt. 2
this song got a lot of hype and recognition for it’s background and how it came to be
if you don’t know, it was cos of namjoon and his genius of a brain
basically it’s based on the 52 Hertz Whale (it’s called that cos of the low frequency sound that it makes) and others cannot hear it. so essentially it’s lonely. the title is a mash up of the words ‘alien’ (which is linked to loneliness and being ‘alienated’) and the word ‘whale’ (for obvious reasons)
so i’m BRINGING IT BACK and no one can stop me
one word to describe this song: genius
from the very beginning the vibe of the song is set
if i could take each section of the song and analyse it i would
but i can’t
overall this song is super relaxing to listen to
you can just vibe with it ya feel
it’s not too intense with emotions (and it’s defs not a party anthem)
but it’s one that i personally like to listen to when i’m sitting on my lonesome in the car, going on a roadtrip
or when i’m sitting in my backyard and just sitting around nature
or if i’m lying in bed and just enjoying the music
lyrics-wise, it is quite deep and touching, but when just listening to the vocals and the rap, it can be interpreted to any situation and that’s what i really like about this song
you can listen to it on different days with a different mood and still vibe to it
overall such a good song with bits and pieces that make you love it even more
5. Intro: What Am I To You - Dark&Wild
okay when speaking of the switch ups between rap and vocals
this song is purely rap
but HOLY SHIT
the way this song is composed
namjoon is amazing can i just say before anything else
i can’t stress it enough
this song takes you on a JOURNEY which is the best way i can describe it
in one word: unexpected (-ly amazing)
if you were to listen to the second half and then the first half, you might not be able to tell they were the same song
now okay, the change isn’t DRAMATIC but it IS
starts off with the school bell and being in a classroom
and the tone is all lighthearted and inspiring and happy
and the lyrics are so happy and romantic
and it starts building on its pace
and the vibes are still light and happy
but then there’s this switch from happy to… something else
it starts building again but differently
and the vibe changes
it’s filled with hurt and maybe resentment?? (when talking about the tone and vibe of the song)
it builds to anger and frustration
and then it gets SO intense
and the HURT and EMOTION in his voice
it’s so powerful I CANT DEAAAAL
so yeah
very very very underappreciated JUST LISTEN TO IT
6. Let Me Know - Dark&Wild
one word to describe: VOCALS + emotionally complex
this song doesn’t even need an explanation
JUST LISTEN TO IT IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY IT’S A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE
7. I Need U (Urban Mix) - HYYH Pt. 3
if you love the original song but don’t feel like you’re in that mindset to listen to it (you know what i’m talking about, when you’re not in that mood)
THIS is a pERFECT alternative
it’s a complete shift to the original track
one word to describe it: chill/different
i say ‘different’ because it shows a side to bts that we don’t see very often
a bit jazzy and yeah really urban (obviously)
if you’re looking for a cure after listening to one of their more emotional songs, this could be it!!
8. Rain - Dark&Wild
this sorta reminds me of whalien 52 and i need u
but it’s still very different
it’s very jazzy
it’s also very mature sounding
actually this song is VERY underappreciated
especially since this fandom has grown so big, i feel like this song is sorta just lying on its lonesome in a dusty attic along with other forgotten bts songs
wow that’s depressing
i hope it’s actually not like that, but if it is then i’m bringing it back to life!!
it’s very light if that’s a way to describe it :’)
idk an article describes it as breezy which i think fits more lmao
i suck at describing music i’m sorry
but the vocals and the rap are very relaxing to listen to
personally, i listen to this both when i’m feeling lonely and when i’m in a good mood
i just feel very content listening to it
one word to describe it: versatile
that’s all for now folks!! feel free to reblog and add your own tracks that you think deserve more love/should be loved once again. i hope all the new/recent ARMYs found this list useful/insightful/interesting and continue to support/learn about and/or respect bangtan’s music from the beginning up to now :) for all the older ARMYs i hope you all agreed with this or enjoyed this list (whether it took you down memory lane or not idk) and to everyone, let’s continue to support bangtan in all of their musical journeys <3

The Handmaiden (2016) Movie Review
Tumblr media
By Savannah Gisleson (Los Angeles)
For all the visual opulence in Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden, a point is to be made through it.
The full frames mimic that of an oil-painting: soft, warm, sumptuous. However, if the film were to be an old portrait the pink rose petal lips of the protagonists simmer – smiling, letting their secrets barely breach the surface. However, once their quiet simmers boil over, their transgressions and secrets explode through the canvas, slapping the viewer in the face. This is The Handmaiden’s modus operandi. Park winks at the audience, as if to let us in on a secret, to let us know something is coming, that something big is going to happen. And once it comes, nothing is shied away from – everything that was once in the shadows bursts into the light.
There is nothing subtle about Park’s direction in this way. We, as the audience expect something to happen, and then it does. What draws us in is the how, the why, and especially the what. Many say the collective imagination is often more grand or disturbing than what a director could show or portray – I reject this in the case of Park and The Handmaiden.
The plot is a complex one, inspired by Sarah Waters’ 2002 novel, The Fingersmith, a Victorian story in which a handmaiden falls for her mistress. Park and co-writer Chung Seo-kyung take the basis of the story and set it in 1930’s Korea during the Japanese occupation, politicizing the already twisted love story. Two women already from different classes, different countries, and different ethnicities find each other in a Victorian home, each trying to dupe the other.
Lady Hideko, played by a wonderful Kim Min-hee, is the trapped, cynical, and frigid Japanese lady who has been trained by her Uncle Kouzuki (Cho Jin-woong) to read classic erotica to audiences so that he might sell fakes of the books and maintain the fortune of Hideko’s family – alongside a plan to marry his her. This all unravels once “Count” Fujiwara hatches a plan to marry Hideko, inherit her fortune, and then lock her in a madhouse. He enlists a famed pickpockets daughter Sook-Hee (Kim Tae-ri), to push Hideko into his arms so that all works out to plan – which of course it does not.
The Handmaiden involves love, lies, and deception amongst all four of these characters, and is split into three pieces to fully explore all. The audience initially follows Sook-Hee from the slums of Korea to the lavish and foreboding home of Lady Hideko and Kouzuki, coming to understand her developing lust and love her new mistress until the last moment the two see each other. Then we jump back in time for Lady Hideko’s perspective on the romance, learning that things were not what they seemed.
Initially, nothing is what it seems in this film. Appearances are deceiving. We see this most with Lady Hideko – she goes through multiple transformations throughout the film, and yet she changes very little. It is about how she is presented to the audience by Park. First naïve and stupid, then cool and frigid, then evil and conniving, then finally a hero. It is not only the characters and plot that peel backwards, revealing what truly lays underneath, the visuals match this trend.
The deep colors of wood, burgundy, and jade of the home in which the majority of the film takes place in are luscious. Grand oil portraits and cherry blossom trees litter the grounds, interiors and exteriors of the home. The library is full of well-loved valuable books. Expensive tapestries and curtains hang from the walls. The entire home is grand and beautiful – however it is a lie. It acts as a cage, trapping Hideko amongst the finery. The library is a lie – all of the expensive and rare books are fakes. The cherry blossom tree is a lie – it is not a symbol of hope and Hideko’s home of Japan – it is the tree her aunt hung herself from. The cherry blossom is a sign of death and despair. Above all else the gilded cage that Hideko sits in is a disguise – it sits upon a basement that houses the ugliest terrors known to man. The basement is what makes people go mad. This is alluded to from the moment Sook-Hee first arrives at the house. The rolling blackouts that the head maid explain to her are the first indications of evil within the house. The light does not shine there permanently. The evil is not expressed fully until later but Park hints at its presence from the beginning.
It’s Park’s attention to these details that allows a good script to transcend to a poetic masterpiece. There are symbols in every scene, every set, every character – symbols that also double down as hints.
This is not to say that The Handmaiden is all doom and gloom. It is far from it. One of the most striking things about the film is its use of comedy in the darkest moments of the film. In one instance, when Hideko attempts suicide vis-à-vis the same cherry blossom method of her aunt, and Sook-Hee saves her at the last moment, both act very cartoonish. They make funny faces, and even use physical comedy to pretend that Sook-Hee forgot about the fact that Hideko is hanging from her neck, and drops her for a moment. This is true in the more romantic scenes as well – in their first consummation of love, Sook-Hee sees Hideko’s bare nipple and exclaims, “it’s so cute!” in a baby voice. She then goes on to call Hideko’s nether regions “s-s-s-spellbindingly beautiful!” The entire love-making session is explicit and calls to mind the humor in real and true sex, by calling attention to the comedy of it.
Park gives the two women the depth needed to laugh together in the face of monsters, death, and rape.
Not to say that Park sticks solely to reality – he does in regards to his characters, but many elements of the film lay far outside the realistic with no explanation as to why or how. In these moments Park only gives us the what.
Once all comes to light, all bets are off. At no point does the sexual demonstrations that Lady Hideko performs with a wooden dummy seem unlikely. Nor does the sexual act with the bells – the bells of freedom- that the girls perform in the last moments of the film seem far-fetched. When we finally see what lurks at the depths of the basement it comes as a surprise, sure, but we do not doubt Park at this point. The traditional Japanese sexual torture device, that is a giant squid, fits in this world. As do the blue carbon monoxide cigarettes that cause instant death. We buy this heightened and poetic reality, regardless of how dark or fucked up it gets.
And we do not question Park – this director is so self-assured in the worlds and stories he creates that the audience never doubts him.
In The Handmaiden Park weaves together black comedy, melodrama, and fantasy together with sexual sadism, Korean history, and lesbianism to create an intricately textured silk cloth. Lies and truth transcend reality, giving us something else, something grand.

Week 2 - Keeping It Up
Week 2, let’s go!
Has been an odd week. Have been feeling extremely lethargic workwise. Can’t seem to concentrate and I keep procrastinating things. Only small bits of work give me inspiration and sparks joy and I’ll ride on the energy wave for a bit and it just flickers out.
That said, on the personal front, things have been not bad. Sticking to my goals, feeding my soul. Issagoooood.
Reads This Week
If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha (3/2021) When I finished If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha, I felt such a sense of grief. That it had to end, that I could no longer be part of the tight quartet in the book, at the sorrows of each character. Ah, the deep, unsettling sense of despair this book left me. I was scrolling through Instagram and was mentally yelling at every Instastory “HOW CAN YOU GO ABOUT YOUR LIVES SO APATHETICALLY WHEN I’M COMPLETELY DEVASTED BY THIS ONE WOMAN’S WORDS?!
This is how I want a read to leave me, despairing and desperate for more. Though I have to say it doesn’t really have a plot, no major plot development, no typical “cleverness” in storytelling. And you have to accept that the 4+1 girls you’re introduced to in the book will remain vague and blurry, like silhouettes in the rain. There is no resolution, though there is hope. (And dread actually, now that I think about it, funny how those two come together so often, Hope and Dread.)
But the language, it was so well written! Cha is wonderful at conveying sentiments of female friendship and made me ache for my girlfriends. I could relate so intensely to the frustrations of her characters, seemingly frivolous issues about ridiculous intense admiration (obsession?) for Korean idols, other girls who look better than you, but also deep-seated scars, embarrassment at one’s childhood, monstrous guardians and care givers, a desire to be more. I could not recommend this more. I’m glad I picked it up. I will re-read this again.
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig (4/2021)
“Between life and death there is a library. And within that library, the shelves go on for ever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be different if you have made other choices”
This was a strange book for me. I thought I liked it. And I think I do, just not as much as I thought I would have. It’s really strange for me to say this because this is literally a book about possibilities. About choices you make that lead you to completely different lives. And I’m ALL about possibilities. This book was dripping with potential and I feel the disappointment of unrealised potential so very acutely.
I liked the first half more than the second half. Haig spends a good amount of time world building in the first half, talking about loss, about disappointment, about consequence of action and outcomes that don’t always meet our expectations. The premise is MAGICAL, so beautifully clever. A Library of possible lives, my heart aches at how poetic that is.
The second half just went into weird philosophical town. “The only way to learn is to live.”, “But now you’re lost within your lostness.” It got a bit… The 5 People You Meet In Heaven-ish. Which for some people is probably great, for me… it felt a bit preachy. Perhaps if you share similar regrets as the protagonist, Nora, you might like this book a lot than me.
Still enjoyed it though. For the love of the language. Haig is quite a virtuoso at wielding language to break your heart. Maybe it’s just personal preference, but I wish Haig took a more fantasy route, instead of a philosophical, Life Is About Living, approach.
Kim Ji-young, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-ju (5/2021) I first heard of this book some time in 2019 I think, reading a SCMP article about how there were Korean couples breaking up because they could not agree on their feelings towards the movie adaptation. (Seriously, fucking Koreans wtf?!) Apparently there was great division on how women are treated in Korea, tensions on gender discrimination and The Patriarchy was rearing its ugly head, calling foul on attempts of the feminist movement in Korea.
At that time, I was more intrigued by how ridiculous Korea can be (seriously, there were people sending death threats to female celebrities who even mentioned they read the book, what in the world?!) so I got a little swept away reading about how intensely chauvinistic Korea is. For all the shine and beauty of Kpop, Korea is really quite fucked up.
I’m about 20% in and I quite like it so far! It’s translated so there are some awkward moments but overall, the language is easy and regular, highlighting how normal the discrimination and injustice Kim Ji-young faces is.
Writes This Week
I.. haven’t finished my Kang Trilogy. Heh. I think I need some time away from it and will come back to it soon. I’m noticing that the Kang in my writing and the actor that kind of inspired him are becoming increasingly different. I think the Kang in my writing is becoming more like... me. I hope that one day, I’ll be able to write about things that I’m not familiar with, experiences that I’ve never had before. Practice, I’ll practise till I get there.
I did finish a piece on Instagram woes, one that I started some time back but came back and finished in like... 10 mins. (Time away really does help.) It’s the first piece I’ve ever sent to a friend for critique and I’m so so so glad I did! I hope this is the start of something between AG and me, writing, reading and critiquing each others’ pieces. :)
Reading more really does help with writing better!
Watches This Week
MiChuRi  미추리 Season 1 & 2 on random website I googled out A Korean variety show I started on because Song Kang was in it. Premise is that the participants of the show have to solve clues to find a sum of money hidden somewhere in this “village”. It has elements of 2 Days 1 Night and Running Man. Yoo Jae Suk hosts so you already know it’s gonna be good!
IT IS SO FUNNY HOMG WHAT. 10/10 will recommend for crack lols. I actually found myself learning quite a bit about the Korean language through this show. Also conclude that Song Kang looks great but he is severely lacking in the reasoning department. Boy is not what we would typically deem “intelligent”. But God Damn his beautiful face! God is fair, God is always fair.
Extracurricular on Netflix About half way through it. It is really very good but in small doses please. Sometimes I forget that our main characters are just high school students but when I do, I feel almost physically sick watching what they have to do to survive.
Kim Dong Hee is perfect as the incredibly introverted and troubled Oh Ji Soo. I think he carries the show. Some actors act with their eyes, Kim Dong Hee acts with his whole body. You can feel the desperation rushing out in waves from him, from his eyes to his shoulders to his frickin hair. I feel so much for him even though he essentially is pimping out underage escorts. Ah, CHEF’S KISS!
The Uncanny Counter on Netflix 3 episodes in and it’s not bad! Though the amount of bullying that happens in Korean schools... is it normal?! I hope it’s just dramatised for shows... Now that I think about it, Extracurricular had lots of school bullying.  Ya... Korea, what the hell is up man?!
Also, none of the actors playing high school students look like high school students. Seriously, some of them could pass off as 40 year old uncles. Especially the bullies. Maybe they retain every year for the past 10 years? Is that why?
Okay, don’t let me put you off The Uncanny Counter. It’s really quite good. So far at least. Excellent storytelling, great world building, above average cast. A solid 7.5/10 in my books.
My main problem with it is that the characters are very one dimensional. I wish there was more nuance? Like you can fit every character in typical Kdrama tropes almost immediately and it makes the show very predictable. I LOVE the little friendship trio that our protagonist is in though. Is a rare thing, to find such precious friendships in Kdramas built on just pure friendship with no weird love triangle thrown in to complicate things.
Listens This Week
Rediscovered some of IU’s old stuff. Like really old, like 2008, 2010 old. I really like her duet with Na Yoon Kown called First Love, and of course, Good Day is great.
Been listening to quite a bit of Twice this week too. Well, just 2 of their latest singles. I really like I Can’t Stop Me and More and More.
Kpop still dominates my listening charts this week. Heh. :)
This week was not bad to me but I think I really need to pull my weight a bit more. May week 3 continue to be kind to us all! :)
