Interview by Han Jungwon 

Rahim Duong is a twenty-four-year-old writer from Toulouse. He claims not to be “good” at any language he speaks; French, English, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Korean—but we beg to differ. On his off days, he enjoys full-serviced manicures ’cause “you’ll never know when the next bitch be feeling you, then look at you and your dirty finger nails. That’s not cool,” and cafe hopping to scope out the best caramel macchiatos in town. Into 90s hip-hop, collecting niche fragrances, and approaching a life towards sustainable living, he’s learned to trust himself through Google Docs with angry red comments presaged by his editor. 

When did you realize you wanted to be a writer? When I knew I couldn’t do math for the life of me. Nah, but, for real, without a doubt that’d be half of the reasoning. I don’t know—I’m a simple guy. I like writing about things that interest me through my lenses and how I interpret pieces, whether media, art, music or fashion, you know. It all started when I wrote a short story in grade school about Barney getting shot though. They called my mom and sat her down, talked and everything after school. I had the kids laughing, so I didn’t think it was serious. You could imagine how badly that ended. 

Do you Google yourself? I do. Maybe more often than I should. Not a lot pops up, mostly my stuff from publications. The “other stuff” on my dad’s end ‘cause he recently began, y’know, doing whatever he does for, uh, Wooyoungmi. Formerly Lanvin’s strong arm, so there’s that. I think the first thing that appears after the search would be my Instagram, followed by LinkedIn, Twitter, and then the whole situational mess that would essentially be the stuff I‘ve published. 

Speaking of your dad, do you have any interest in taking after him? Ooh, questions about my dad huh? Mr. Duong! Alright, seriously though, not really. I think he’s a cool guy—especially now he’s taken immense control of the Korean-French fashion house which I think is brilliant. I won’t lie, it opened doors for me too so I can’t sit here and act like it doesn’t benefit me. It does, everything he does is gonna get defined through me one way or another. Whether I like it or not. There’s that. He’s why I’m about to be up here, chatting up some painfully boring rich kids in Seoul, sounds about fun right? 

What’s something you miss about your home country? I kinda have a lot? I mean, there’s Morocco, then there’s France where I was, y’know, raised, then we also got Vietnam where my mom’s family‘s from. So Morocco, it’s definitely got to be the weather, and food. And historical sites. France.. well, France.. Maybe the reliable public transportation? And Vietnam, my family and friends. Have any words for aspiring writers? Man, you can go ahead and Google inspirational stuff from other people—why’d it have to be me? Kidding, not really though. Uh, let’s see.. I mean, quite the obvious but make sure it’s something that interests you in the long run. ‘Cause when you become like me with deadlines running, writing an album review and study for JPEGMAFIA can be exhilarating when you’ve got five hours to submit your piece to the editor. That, and be prepared to get an angry mob in your inbox somehow. I don’t think people talk about how journalists online get bullied over the internet regarding critical opinions. Talking about some “you don’t know music! Fuck off the keyboard! okay, shit, wanna do my job for me then? 

What’s something somebody said that stayed with you forever? “I created you, yet I will also destroy you”. Wise words from my mom.
