The love triangle, the quick tech development, whatever you want, I wanna know what you think

The entirety of my thoughts on Ninjago's technology are long and vast and complicated, and I could probably make a full video essay on just that topic alone. But for the sake of simplicity, and also because I'm too lazy to write a 10k-word essay with screenshot evidence on why Ninjago tech isn't actually anachronistic, I'm going to just focus on the season 3 issue for now.

Now, one criticism that often gets lobbed at Rebooted is the matter of the technology. How did Ninjago suddenly become a hyper-futuristic technoscape in the span of what couldn't be more than a year? At first glance, I can understand how that might feel unrealistic. I used to feel the same way! But it actually makes total sense when you realize that this technology probably already existed, if only in a beta form, for years before s3 started.

But wait! If the technology already existed in some form, then why wasn't it used? Why did Ninjago only become a cyberpunk dystopia during s3??

The answer to that question is something that sounds like a no-brainer, but should probably be said anyway: just because a technology exists, doesn't mean it is democratized. That is to say, just because a society has made certain technological advancements, doesn't mean everyone in that society can actually access those advancements. Look at any country in our contemporary world - richer and more industrialized communities typically have better access to cutting edge developments, whereas more rural communities may not even have reliable internet access. Even Ignacia, which is one of the most rural communities we've seen in the entire show, was depicted as having landlines and telephone poles in the very first scene.

Moreover, it's reasonable to assume that robotics and digital technology has existed - and fairly advanced - for decades in-universe.

My evidence? The creation of characters such as Zane and Unagami. Both were invented roughly 40 and 20 years pre-canon respectively. Coding, and especially programming an AI like both characters are classified as, requires the existence of a computer. Which means that computers existed as early as the Serpentine War. (Unless Zane is the product of magi-tech, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Especially since Zane's original body also has other functions that, to my knowledge, wouldn't be possible without programming. For now, I'm proceeding under the assumption that Zane was created purely with technology.)

For these reasons I would argue that certain technologies, and in particular digital technology, have existed in-universe for a lot longer than we might think at first glance - but due to what appears to be some very extreme wealth disparity, technology has only recently become more widely accessible within the last few decades.

Think about it. Most human settlements we see are fairly small and rural, except for Ninjago City. Ninjago City is the only city we've seen on-screen in the entire series (with a few small towns here and there, but it's mostly just villages). And even then, the cost of living in Ninjago City itself is astronomically high. There's clearly something funky going on with this country's distribution of wealth.

With that in mind, it makes total sense that the tech we see in s3 was at least in development a lot earlier than anyone might realize. It's just that it was too expensive and exclusive for anyone in the general public to actually use it.

Now, let's look at this in the context of Rebooted.

Imagine you're a multi-millionaire tech mogul and the CEO of a very powerful tech company. The city is in shambles in the wake of an apocalyptic battle against Lego Satan. You take this opportunity to spearhead the reconstruction efforts. On top of being an impressive PR stunt, this is also great for business as it presents you with the perfect opportunity to populate the city wholesale with your own products: flying cars, holographic floating streets, AI vending machines, elaborate VR and AR setups, mechanical spider wheelchairs, the whole nine yards. The government probably even writes you a big check to make this process more accessible to your consumers - I mean, to the citizens of your the shiny new corporatocracy you may or may not have stumbled into creating. Whether or not you employed lobbyism to get this check is neither here nor there. After all, this is for the greater good! And to finally seal the deal that this city has become a Borg Industries outpost, you rebrand Ninjago City to New Ninjago City. This isn't just a city anymore, it's a corporate asset. It's an ad campaign. It's a way of life.

This also explains why all the tech mysteriously vanishes after s3 ends: supply and demand. A robot apocalypse is, among other things, bad for PR. I don't wanna think about the existence of a Lego Stock Market because that will hurt my brain, but a robot apocalypse is definitely what I would classify as a "black swan event" (an unpredictable crisis that severely disrupts the stock market). The company starts faltering financially because of all the public backlash, people stop buying and investing in their tech, their stocks start to crash, and Borg Industries has to roll back on their infrastructural monopoly. And so the technological status quo is (mostly) restored.

The theme of s3 isn't "technology bad" - at least, it shouldn't be. If you're as brainrotted as I am then the theme of s3 instead becomes, "maybe you shouldn't let one sole company have a total monopoly on your society's infrastructure because they might accidentally start a cyberpunk dystopia". And that is a...disturbingly apt moral for our current day and age (cough cough Amazon).

Nooooo, Mrs.Konig would be heartbroken((( Konig isn't even a cat person, he always wanted a dog since he was a child, but it was impossible due to living in a small apartment with his family. But he is such a great cat owner, he is simply so warm and soft to lay on, the cat ends up always spreading across his lap, fighting for attention with his wife. Mrs.Konig would be so sad because this cat is impossible to bribe!! If Konig is at home, he will follow him, and won't even engage in typical ginger cat messes because his owner is home!!! He needs to be perfect for his owner!! Cat is slightly friendlier when Konig is away, but still cold and always hissing at poor Mrs.Konig( She ends up getting another kitten, this time it's TOO friendly with her, and now Konig himself i jealous because now they can't even have sex without two pair of eyes judging them. It's horrible, honestly, and cats are always scratching at the door when it's closed. Konig got his balls almost scratched by your cat, and you almost got in trouble with the ginger cat, so now you're actively afraid of your own pets...they're still adorable though.

To your embarrassment, tears had sprung in your eyes and began to drip down your cheeks, making you feel like a child having a tantrum. But how else are you supposed to feel, after receiving his silent treatment?

His face softens when he sees your tears. "Darling, I—You haven't done anything wrong."

Your reply is cold, snappy. "I know that I haven't."

"I'm just...Dealing with some emotions that I haven't felt in over two-hundred-years, so if you could have a little patience while I process that, I would appreciate your selflessness."

His sarcasm is so typical, it makes you want to scream. "What fucking emotions? The impending doom of these tadpoles? Everyone in this camp feels that, and at least the others actually speak to me."

Astarion doesn't yell, like you'd expected. In fact, his usual smirking, handsome face is gentle, his eyes round and sad like a kicked puppy's. "I think I’m in love with you and I’m terrified," he says.

You freeze. It's like all the air has rushed out of your lungs and left you gasping, except no sound comes out, your mouth doesn't move. You just stand there, blinking at him like a fool for a moment.

Finally, you manage to speak. “We face unimaginable horrors on a daily basis, and you’re afraid to love me?”

“Horror, I’m used to. Love is something else entirely, something I don’t remember experiencing…Until you.”

He steps closer, outstretching an arm to wrap around your waist, pulling you in. "It has nothing to do with you. You are everything that I want, it's just...Hard for me to admit that. To act upon it. And I'm sorry, if I made you feel like I was angry with you."

An apology from Astarion's lips is rare, and so you know he must mean it. You've finally regained the ability to speak, and so, you softly say, "I love you too. I'm sorry I yelled at you."

"That's quite alright, darling. I know you just missed my beautiful face between your—"

+ About and P.A.Q. (Possibly Asked Questions)

Q: How did this come to be? This came into my mind as I was thinking about my Jujutsu Kaisen Original Character, Shiori Yamada. She is from my JJK Canon Compliant fanfic, Sand and Snow. I thought: what if she came to Jujutsu High years after the events of Sand and Snow? And that's where it started.

Q: What's the difference between the short stories and the one-shots? Mostly, I usually have a long or dedicated main plot in my short stories, whereas in the one-shots, what is written is much more focused on an excerpt of the characters' interactions.

Q: what is the best way to read this? I wrote it in a way that basically all one-shots can be read as stand-alone pieces (same for each short story). Just read in the chronological order of events, as listed above.

Q: is it the same f!reader in all of these stories? Yes, it is The reader is based off of my Original Character, Shiori. I didn’t intend to make her a staple, but just liked the character too much to let it slide. I’ll eventually make a reference sheet with her story (as soon as I finish Sand and Snow, to avoid spoilers).

There are some things I want to put here because as an anxious writer, I like when other writers do this.

1. this is my COPIUM from the trauma I have endured during JJK (thanks Gege), so no matter what, THERE WILL BE A HAPPY ENDING for all characters. I just like the bumpy road, makes the happiness at the end feel worthwhile.

2. I decided to one-shot the ending. However, the long fic based off of this universe will probably have a slightly different and bigger one. There are many things (protagonist’s power journey, lore, her backstory, actual big plot that I have planned, etc) that I really want to write on the long fic, and didn’t find a way of doing so in these one-shots and short stories.

3. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but I began cross posting these on AO3. The link is on the top.

4. The Big Sad™ and The Big Feels™ are about to get started. I’ll just finish up some one-shots first and then proceed with them. There will be angst, but a lot of fluff too.

Random thoughts and fun facts from the author that absolutely no one asked for but I wanted to write anyway

Themes are... guilt, forgiveness, grief, and life after loss, I guess? Idk, I like writing characters interacting and growing with each other, so I just give them their trauma and let them work through it.

I first got inspired to write HiguReader when I listened to “Loser, Baby” from Hazbin Hotel. They’re both so over Jujutsu High’s shit and vibe on that shared contempt that I just loved the concept of it.

One of my favorite things to do is getting traits from a character and twisting them to be a double edged knife - a quality and a flaw at the same time. Basically, that’s what I did with Nanami’s protective persona, and intend to do (as of writing this on march 24th) with Higuruma’s sense of justice and responsibility.

I was terrified writing my first smut piece (The Man who Played with Fire), and I’m astonished at how well it was received. You guys are the best, seriously.

Nanami’s suffering will end soon (I say as of writing this, march 24th).

I got inspired by some very talented authors on this site to write non-explicit sex scenes, and will try doing it in two or three one-shots, where there is sex involved, but I don’t think smut would fit very well.

Writing smut as a demisexual person is an entire experience, let’s just say that.

From the very beginning, I just found it impossible in my heart to ship or even hint at shipping OC/Reader and Gojo. Also, as a NM person who doesn’t appreciate rigid hierarchy of romantic x platonic relationships, I wanted to write more on becoming friends with Gojo. However, from what I could see when writing these fics and shorts, this will end up mostly in the long fic.

I STRUGGLE with headers so damn much. I don’t like using fanart (shy to ask for permission), and finding good fitting anime frames/manga panels is usually a little difficult without becoming too repetitive. I’ll just try my best making headers for the AU stories moving forward.

I like writing strong, capable, willful female characters who are secure of themselves and have got some rizz iykwim. Dainty female characters are really not my thing when it comes to writing. I’ll eventually try writing more delicate or heart-warming female leads/readers, though, because we should strive to get out of our comfort zone.

Writing in 2nd person is still a challenge for me. I was used to writing in 1st person in a Lispectoresque style when I wrote ten years ago (also, I did it in my native language). “The Letter” will be (or “was”, depending on when you’re reading this) my attempt at transporting my original style of writing into English and reader insert.

J-Fashion Terms for Beginners 3: Electric Boogaloo

Angura Kei: A Visual Kei substyle inspired by traditional Japanese underground theater performances (Angura = Underground), but it is occasionally associated with Ero-Guro Visual Kei bands. People who wear Angura typically wear traditional Japanese clothing such as kimonos, military uniforms, and school uniforms (seifukus and gakurans usually) but with a gothic twist or references to the supernatural (such as those triangle handkerchiefs worn by ghosts in Japanese folklore). It isn't uncommon to see them wear shironuri makeup as that was worn by Angura actors during the 1960s and 1970s. From what I've seen, Angura isn't typically a style one wears day to day due to its over the top and elaborate nature. Some known Angura Kei bands are: MUCC, cali≠gari (though they are more known for Ero-Guro), Zombie Lolita and Inugami Circus-dan.

A truly theatrical blast from the past...

Erokawa: Translates as "erotic cute", this aesthetic and style is also known as Erokakkoi (translates as "erotic cool"). Erokawa contrasts most kawaii trends by incorporating the concepts of sexiness seen in the West. While it is mostly a "visual art" type of kawaii style, I have seen outfits that do match this style; they tend to be mainly pastel clothes styled after lingerie, actual lingerie, clothes that share elements with Agejo Gyaru, shirts with sexy kawaii girls on them, or just your typical "tight sexy outfit with references to kawaii culture or ecchi on it. For accessories you'll see chokers, leg garters, handcuffs, harnesses and occasionally cat ears. The idea of cuteness is associated with neoteny, fragility, innocence and youthfulness; the idea of sexiness is associated with adulthood, experience, excitement and maturity. Sexiness can technically be seen as what cuteness is meant to evolve into once we all turn from children to adults. But Japan is famous for loving everything that can be considered "cute" and not approving of "non-cute" things unless they are made "cuter" for mainstream media, and yes...this partially includes sexuality that is natural for adult women to have. Enter famous Japanese Idol, Kumi Koda. Chapter 16.

Summary: Soulmates find each other through what is known as The Pull. A sense within a persons body that their soulmate is within reach that guides them to find them. You find yourself following this Pull, guided by vague dreams of a man you can't quite see, until you collapse in the wild and are found by Troy, your soulmate, who has been following the same feeling toward you for days.

Once connected soulmates are able to share emotions through their bond, as well as being able to sense where the other is. But how this force works is very much a mystery still, it can vary from soulmate to soulmate, and just sometimes a connection too deep can lead twist a bond from something beautiful to, well...

You try and take your mind off things by tidying up the bunkhouse, and you’re in the middle of sweeping the dust out the front door when a sudden feeling hits you directly in the chest. It hits you hard enough to make you stagger on your feet for a few seconds.

You pause as panic overcomes you. You reach for your bond, for the pull… you find it empty.

“No!”

You're already out the door and running across the ranch when you see the trucks approaching in the distance. They're driving much faster than they usually would, which could only mean something was very, very wrong.

“Radio for Jake!”

You shout at the guard at the gate. He frowns at you but doesn't hesitate, also seeing the urgency in the way the trucks are driving along the road kicking up dust that floats into the air like smoke. Your eyes scan each of the drivers, looking for Troy as they pull into the gateway but he isn't behind any of the wheels.

Your eyes lock with Cooper as he jumps from the truck. Something is already behind hauled from the back and your heart drops when you see it’s Troy. Limp and pale with blood coating his face and neck.

“Is he bit?”

Are your first words as you chase after them rushing toward the medical tent. You see Cooper shake his head and you sigh with relief.

Jake is there and you don't even remember how or when he arrived. Getting Troy on the bed was a blur. Cooper pulling you out of the way as Jake checks him over was like a dream once Jake goes quiet and intently stares at Troy’s eyes as he flashes a small light in each one.

Your stomach churns. You know enough to realise what Jake is checking for, the responses he needs to know that the blood coating Troy’s head would not prevent him from waking up.

“… too slow…”

Jake mutters.

Your heart stops.

“But he’s responding, right?”

You say shakily. Jake nods but he doesn't look any happier about this than he did before the test.

You can't watch when Jake starts to examine the wound. You feel sick at the sight. You let Cooper lead you outside as he says something about getting air. You're in a daze and all you can do is keep tugging at the bond between you, urging Troy to tug back.

“What the hell happened?”

You say eventually, shaking as you look to Cooper for an explanation.

Cooper doesn't owe you anything, but he gives you a quick summary of events. They came across survivors. They were hostile. They engaged and Troy was injured by one of them who struck him from behind.

You shake your head slowly.

“And the survivors?”

“Took some out. Some escaped.”

Cooper says bluntly.

You clench your fists and your jaw sets when you speak again.

“And the one who hurt Troy?”

Cooper looks away, actually looking a little ashamed.

“… escaped.”

You feel rage. How? Why?

Before you could ask for more information you hear Jeremiah calling for Cooper. You keep your back turned. You don't have the patience for Troy’s father today.

Jeremiah demands an explanation as he leads Cooper back into the tent. You're left alone outside it and your knees buckle. You hit the grass hard and your fingers dig into the dirt.

This can't be it. Troy’s presence in her heart was like a gaping hole. Just empty and filled with cold, yearning darkness. You reach for him again but the lack of connection steals your breath away. That was when Cooper and Jeremiah burst from the tent and start running back toward the gate.

Without a second thought you follow, and neither man seems to care or notice. You can see the militia gathering at the outer edge of the ranch, taking up defensive positions you'd seen Troy scribbling notes about in his book.

You’re at Cooper’s side when you hear the words you already knew.

“They followed us.”

Jeremiah is shouting curses and yelling instructions. You see Mike limping toward the gate. He hadn’t been out with the others, but duty calls. He sees you and frowns.

“Get in the house.”

You scowl at him.

“Don’t tell me what to-”

Mike cuts you off.

“Troy would want you safe. Get in the house!”

You’re about to argue again when Jeremiah pipes up.

“You’ll do as you’re told. We don’t need civilians out here making things more complicated. So unless you’re gonna pick up a weapon missy, get outta the line o’ fire.”

You clench your fists and look to Cooper for support. Unfortunately he just shrugs and looks away with an apologetic look in his eyes.

“Fine!”

You huff. You run back to the main house, the closest shelter to the gate, and take the steps two at a time to Troy’s bedroom. You burst through the door and toward the window where you know you’ll be able to see everything.

Your fingers grip the window frame. You see a car approaching with a pole and a white rag handing from it. You feel a burst of anger.

So these people almost kill Troy and they dare approach his home seeking peace? You can see Jeremiah and Cooper taking the lead, stepping out to meet the vehicle whilst the militia keep their weapons pointed at the people inside.

You squint as you see someone step out, their hands are raised and you can make out a woman with shoulder length blonde hair. You can’t hear what’s being said, but Jeremiah is actually listening… and that makes you furious.

Your eyes are drawn to the opposite side of the car. Another set of raised hands, another figure emerging…

A man. Or a boy, he looks young. Messy hair down to his shoulders and even from here you can see the scowl on his features. Your heart beats hard.

Do something.

It tells you.

These people hurt Troy.

Do something!

Your fingers lose their grip on the window frame and your feet are carrying you back down the steps and outside faster than you can think. Your breathing is hard and your heart pounds. Your feet land on dirt and you run toward the gate.

You’re almost there, you can hear the woman’s voice but you can’t hear her words. But Jeremiah seems to be listening, and that infuriates you.

Do something!

Your heart screams again.

You’re almost at them when your glare switches from the woman to the boy. He is the first to see you, his narrowed eyes slide from the woman to you and they widen with surprise, with recognition. With shock.

It’s like someone has reached into your chest and torn your heart in two. You stop running and it takes all of your strength not to fall to your knees in the dirt.

The boy’s mouth opens. He goes to say something, his hand comes up as if reaching for you but you’re shaking your head and backing away with a hand pressed over your chest.

This… couldn’t be right. Be real. This feeling…

This sudden intense need to close the gap between you both and…

Jeremiah spots you and you hear him shout, but you’re already turning on your heel to flee. Because it couldn’t be right. This feeling in your chest… this… Pull.

Your feet carry you back to the medical tent where you burst through, frightening Jake who is sitting beside Troy, his head in his hands.

“He’s not…?”

You choke out as Jake meets your eyes.

“He woke. Briefly.”

Your legs almost collapse again.

Jake has a small, half-smile on his face. It’s still tinged with sadness and worry, but he doesn’t look like a man about to lose his brother.

“He said your name and lost consciousness again. But I think he’ll be okay, eventually.”

You let out a strangled sob of relief and your legs finally give way. Jake is with you immediately, pulling you up, setting you on the bed beside Troy.

“You’re still not fully recovered. The shock… you need to rest…” Jake is muttering.

You just nod and let him lay you down. You turn your head toward your soulmate and you reach out with your heart. A sense of warmth and happiness spreads through you when you finally find him, he’s there, as if at a distance even though you could reach out and touch him physically. But he is still in your heart.

But then you feel something else. A pulsing throb in your chest that makes you want to get off the bed and run back to the gate to give it some relief, to ease the pressure as it wills you to get off the bed and move.

Jake mistakes your sudden change in pallor and gently rubs your arm, uttering reassuring words that everything will be okay. But he doesn’t know. How could he? Nothing will ever be okay again… not when your heart is suddenly torn in half between two soulmates.

I think out of all the YGO characters I have the most Typical Blorbo Impulses towards Honda like I want to beat him up in fics then patch him up after, put him in Situations, create elaborate backstory details for him that follow the sort of Internal Logic Train that chugs ever onward in your brain when you're way too obsessed with a minor character, and maybe the train tracks have skewed off a bit from both canon and reality, but really is it MY fault that the poor guy is in every single episode and is still somehow considered a minor character, you are putting him in front of my eyeballs and ASKING for me to think about him but not giving me substantial train tracks so I have to build my own, jumping christ I lost control of both this sentence and this metaphor. Anyways yeah love this dude and big ups to my friends, beloved mutuals, people trapped in servers with me, etc who will sit in a circle with me and join me in trying to set him on fire with a magnifying glass. P.S. I mean "He Sure Does Exist" in the absolute best way, it is my firm belief that every shonen anime needs some Dudes that Exist, it's a vital part of the shonen anime ecosystem. I ended up busy all day yesterday so I decided to add some little drawings to spice up my reply <3 I'm gonna resist yapping about Baldur and Cato for this one, and I'm gonna save our sweet Bjorn and Eret for later yaps. Instead I decided to focus on some other dragon hunter OCs!

People who have read OTWD might remember Sikka for her antler hood or nadder spear, but under the hood she's got incredible tattoos called tunniit. Tunniit are part of the Inuit tattooing tradition that Eret’s tattoos were inspired by. In real life they’re typically seen on women, and these days a lot of women are getting them again to keep their traditions alive, so I decided that based on Eret’s I would give each northern tribe their own kakiniit that identify their tribal affiliation and family. Since our httyd northern tribes live in the Arctic between Greenland and Russia, I figure the tradition probably spread from Greenland! The forehead portion is similar triangle shape for everyone in Sikka’s tribe and represent antlers (there might be variations in exact design based on the family). The chin portion represents one's individual role or honors a family member. Sikka's represents a herder tracking the hoofprints of a reindeer, and her mother had the same. She belongs to the Reindeer Tribe of Reindeer Valley, near Griselda's Fortress and was only 16 when she joined Cato's crew (she's ~21 in OTWD). Griselda refused to hire her at first bc her mother had ended up in a terrible, fatal conflict with one of Griselda's top men that caused controversy between her tribe and the hunting operation, but Cato insisted on giving her a chance. He's extremely proud of her skill and loyalty, and she loves him like a brother, so betraying him in OTWD was not an easy decision. The moment he realizes Sikka's abandoned him is when he decides our heroes have really got to pay, bc he hasn't just lost a payday or even his second chance with Gustav but also his horned shadow. I'm SO excited to see her again in Into the Polar Night, she's going to have a very important role and I think it'll surprise everyone. Hopefully it won't be too long before I post a playlist for her <3

The other two OCs here will only appear in Gustav's short which is tentatively titled How To Hunt Your Dragon LOL

Ragnall is the quartermaster of the Goregutter, the first hunting ship that Gustav and Cato work on, and he's essentially Gustav's boss despite not being much older than him. He manages the ship and deck for the captain Harald Bloodaxe, who handles the business side like choosing where to port and hunt. Ragnall does hunt dragons but he doesn't manage the dragon hold where they're kept, that's up to a slavic man named Wyrmhart (Cato's boss). His mother was the witch Skuld, and he grew up working whaling boats in Thunderhead Bay, and some of the men grumble that he practices witchcraft. He's strict but generally fair, and likes Gustav just because he's a high quality sailor relative to a lot of the hunters. On the other hand, he despises the mainland vikings who are converting to christianity and their christian Saxon neighbors, so he's particularly prejudiced against Cato, who barely even speaks fluent norse at this point (if he'd bother to ask, he'd learn that Cato isn't a christian, but you know how prejudices are). Ragnall is pretty important to the overall OTWD series for a few different reasons actually, so I can't wait to write his story. I think everyone will find it shocking and fun hehe >:)

Siraj is the 19 year old son of an extremely wealthy trade lord from Marrakesh who pays to bring a lot of Griselda's cargo through the Mediterranean. He's apprenticing under Harald and Ragnall to learn the ropes (literally) of sailing and managing a trade business because his father wants him to have practical knowledge before taking over the business, since he's been raised in a very privileged and comfortable life. He went to university in Marrakesh, so he speaks multiple languages and really boggles Gustav's mind with his knowledge haha. He's really sociable and is Gustav's first friend on the Goregutter, they have a fun gang of friends. The only thing he's not involved with is the actual dragon hunting, since that has nothing to do with running a trade empire. He does go home after his time on the Goregutter so he isn't involved in the plot of ITPN or TOTG, but I imagine that he keeps traveling all over the Silk Road and making friends everywhere before taking over his dad's business.

Whew that was some MAJOR yapping but I'm so glad for the chance to talk about some of my dragon hunters. A lot of the hunters are just background people to me, like the background Berserkers, and I don't really consider them OCs, but these three definitely are <33 my actual reaction to this ask:

I put this book off for so long because a) I heard the next book in the series only comes out in 2025 and I didn't want to be left hanging, and b) I wasn't the biggest fan when I heard there was a (sigh) love triangle in there. And yet here I am, having finished it at long last.

Confession: I was/am in the middle of something like a reading slump. February has not been kind to me with my reads. When the Ann Liang book I was anticipating for months let me down horrifically, ALL the books that followed either fell flat too or were just… middling. I went through book after book feeling empty, and then I told myself: you know what. Legendborn has been on EVERYONE and their mother's radar, and their responses are the same—near unanimous acclaim. It's honestly quite insane.

So I took a gamble. I got the book and started reading it. 

You can TELL. You can just TELL when a book hits right for you, unlike the ones I read before it. I was hooked. Engaged. Totally captivated. I'd read and DNFed another fantasy book just weeks ago, which also utilised King Arthur lore (titled Silver in the Bone), but somehow Legendborn succeeded where that story failed (for me). Maybe I'm just a basic bitch who's a sucker for the typical storyline of a normal girl finding herself entangled with a group of monster slayers and doing tournaments to become one of them. (Is this why… I was instantly enthralled with the Infernal Devices??? Or why I love Demon Slayer—the anime—so much????? I am finding out new things about myself.)

But sure… the beginning isn't anything too different from traditional YA structures. But as you get going, and you continue down the road, you start to see new grounds being tread, and it deviates from anything I've personally read as a teen.

As usual, even though I loved this book, I'm going to do what I almost always do and explore the dichotomy of what I liked and didn't.

Spoilers abound. 

Didn't like:

It was predictable… up to a point (and then I was GOBSMACKED but we'll get to that later). Like, I knew pretty quickly which characters were going to make it to Squires and which weren't. You could just tell from how the author treated certain Pages (the folks trying to be Squires) in a more favourable light. The nice ones win, the not-nice ones don't. I'd have liked more nuance in their characterisation, TBH.

Speaking of which, however, Bree's characterisation at the start was rough. Like, she'd do stupid shit and get in trouble and continue being irresponsible. I wasn't surprised Alice was mad at her, and I don't think that the trouble she faced stemmed solely from her race but rather her irresponsible behaviour (going off-campus when she already knows that's grounds for expulsion and she STILL gets mad when the dean, who decides to let her off, is churlish with her. Seriously?). That said, I am NOT Black, and I can't speak for the quotidian prejudices they face, so take my perception of it with a grain of salt. In any case, Bree changed and this was no longer an issue for me later on.

Nick. And his whole romance with Bree. Like, I really did NOT care. And Nick was pretty much a white boy-damsel in distress the entire story. Every time screen time was devoted to their romance, my eyes would glaze over and I'd start skimming all the kissing and stuff. 

There were a lot of characters. Like, a lot. Too many. My brain was scrambling trying to remember and place everyone in their different roles. And aside from a few (bless William), they didn't have very distinct voices. Greer had, like, ZERO distinctive voice other than being non-binary, which should not be the only thing to define a character. Whitty was… nice, is all? Everyone kinda just melded in my brain, which is probably why none of the character deaths really hit me. 

I'm not a huge fan of Chosen One tropes. But this does play on the trope in a VERY interesting way. 

WHAT I LIKED (!!!!!!!!!!!):

The whole concept of Root and Bloodcraft. I LOVED how the author used magic to convey the colonisation of white men. The idea that Legendborns forcefully TAKE their power, while non-Bloodcraft users only borrow their power, speaks volumes to me. It was such a good way to portray real life.

Also??? The ending twist about Bree????? All along, I was convinced she was secretly the Scion of Lancelot, but I wasn't sure HOW, because all the knights are obviously white. And then the author pulls a fast one on me and she's actually fucking Arthur. The reasoning is so good. I loved how the White Man's own cruelty and their disgusting ownership of Black people led them to this predicament. I think THIS was the part that truly sold me on how terrific and unique this book was.

Characters-wise… William. Like, I adore the fuck out of him. In another world, in an even less conventional book, William would have been the hero for me. He's exactly my type with how calm and confident he was without needing to be overbearing about it. In fact, he was so gentle. (Makes me think of Jem Carstairs, but obviously Jem is THE published blueprint for types like this.)

Sel. Yes, I know I just talked about how I didn't like overbearing characters, and I initially went into this book expecting to hate him, but… :) I thought he was quite justified in his hatred / distrust towards Bree at first, knowing what he knew about how the mesmer and Oaths didn't take. I'll see if my opinion of him changes in the sequel. 

I  really, really liked how for once, King Arthur wasn't depicted as just some hero. He actually seemed almost villainous in this book, especially in the moments when Bree was possessed by him. What happened to her supposedly getting wisdom when she Awakened, though? This man does not sound wise at all. I am intrigued.

I am so glad I read this book. SO GLAD. I was down in the dumps for a bit and finally reading a good fantasy made me feel a thousand times better. I'm a bit nervous reading the sequel because some things often don't live up to their predecessor, so I shall see.

making my own post because people keep getting sent weird anons and i don't want to put them on blast. anyways i really don't get how some ppl ended up at that conclusion that claiming "changing a homestuck characters gender impacts other aspects of their character" is transphobic like? what??

bc taking john for example, somewhat similarly to dave, a lot of his self image is based on preconceived notions of what it's like to Be A Man, which you can see most prominently imo in the way he idolizes action movie actors, esp when his reality does not live up to those expectations and he starts doubting his self-worth. also, the homophobia is also a pretty obvious indicator of the toxic masculinity he internalizes 🤨 ?

another thing to understand is that a lot of the gender significance in homestuck relies on the fact that we as readers have experiences in the real world that impact our experiences consuming and interpreting media. for example, with rose, a girl who frequently used gameFAQs in 2009 (which is seen as a mainly male-dominated space) is significant (something something gamergate)

not to mention... romantic attraction?? if you change a character's gender, suddenly the narrative significance of their romantic targets changes drastically. if dirk was a girl, act 6 would be completely different just from the fact that the love quadrangle ALONE would have an entirely new dynamic. kanaya is another huge example of this; if she was a boy her crush on vriska would no longer be about lesbian attraction, but instead just another heterosexual love triangle. even if that doesn't necessarily change much plot-wise, as i mentioned earlier it has a big impact on the experience the reader has because a completely different message is being conveyed. and that's just kanaya's sexuality, that's not even getting into her prominent themes of motherhood (or femininity in general)

you can do this with virtually any character. porrim being a woman is important because she is a very feminist character. kankri being a man is important because his male privilege allows him to ignore porrim's concerns about gender inequality on beforus, making a statement about gender inequality irl. jane being a girl is important BOTH because her character subverts the (YA novel?) female protagonist trope AND because the condesce chooses solely women to be heirs (this goes for jade and the prexies as well) which (at least somewhat) subverts female character tropes in general (even just the fact that a woman is the ruler of alternia is somewhat subversive as well). also, this is sort of a bonus, but jane being the first human in hs to wear pants was a moderately-sized Deal at the time. speaking of the condesce, the fact that doc scratch/lord english choose powerful women in the story to act as their pawns (the condesce, the handmaid, vriska, terezi, rose, even kanaya and jade somewhat)? gender's pretty important there too!! for obvious reasons!! roxy's identity is heavily tied to femininity, she refers to herself as a girl the most out of any other character. she herself even compares herself to the femme fatale trope, one that is paralleled by jake's interest in the trope as well. vriska and tavros's relationship depicting a girl harassing and abusing a boy is absolutely important when considering the fact that male victims of abuse are largely ignored irl. cronus is based off the greaser subculture, which is composed of men. hussie based aradia off the "spooky japanese ghost girl" trope. nepeta's interest in shipping would be taken differently if she were a boy, as shipping (and fandom in general) are typically seen as feminine interests, which is juxtaposed with her ruthlessness and violence. this is similar to how karkat's interest in romcoms (yknow. chick flicks.) is juxtaposed with his aggressive and unpleasant attitude. latula's commitment to "girl power" is a statement about the irl use of girl power and how it can inadvertently imply that women aren't inherently equal to men. literally everything about ARquius. damara is maliciously sexualized (although more due to her being japanese rather than a woman, but it's still influential). rufioh is literally based off another character. i could go on

the bottom line for most of these instances is that we interpret a lot from characters based on their gender because we apply the context of our own societal experiences and biases to the story. so no matter what you do, 99% of the time, even if changing a character's gender doesn't necessarily impact the plot, it's going to impact the way the character is received and understood

(this isn't to say that trans hcs or genderbends are problematic or anything. im just giving my opinion on a topic that's caused a bit of discourse recently lol)

then again it's been a while since i've read homestuck and im pretty bad at literary analysis. so what do i know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ feel free to add on, even if you disagree!

Yeah, that trailer had me going “well that is not really the Camilla of the book who is a hell of a lot more nuanced than the sad wife whose husband is in love with someone else that trailer shows.”

I've seen critiques of Camila's characterization that I don't think are invalid--that she's too much of the "passive Latina wife of the white guy who just lets him cheat on her with a white woman"... And in the context of how TJR has written Latinx people in general, there's definitely a conversation to be had.

But I don't think, based purely off the trailer so I could be wrong, they were trying to fix that here. I think that they wanted a more traditional love triangle. I'm not anti-triangle, and I love this book's triangle soooo much, but I love it because of the nuance. I love that it's more like a love quadrangle because it's not just Camila Billy Daisy, it's Camila Billy Drugs Daisy. One of Billy and Daisy's shared connections is music and artistry, but the other is... drugs.

I think that it's very possible that, had there not been any kids in the picture, Billy would've left Camila for Daisy. This doesn't mean I think he wasn't in love with Camila; it means I think you can absolutely be in love with more than one person at the same time... just probably not totally equally or in the same manner, and at some point in that story, by his own very begrudging admission, he was more in love with Daisy than he was with Camila. I think the prospect of kids and family and home called to Billy and kept him there, which is VERY REAL. At points, things that are not you may be what keep you partner in your marriage, but that does not mean that y'all can't build off of that, like I believe Billy and Camila did. It's a remarkably mature love triangle in that sense.

But if the kids hadn't existed, I think that Billy could've gone off the deep end with Daisy, chosen her, and then... I don't know. One or both of them would've probably died of an overdose. Because their love for each other was very real. So was their love of drugs. I think that with years of sobriety under their belts, Daisy and Billy could possibly have a future! But at that point, they were gonna die if they got together, and he knew this, and that's why having the tether that was his family was good and a relief. And they had a happy life together, so it was a net positive! But a happy life together doesn't mean.... giving up things. One thing the book nails, to me, is that you very rarely can have EVERYTHING you want. You can be totally happy choosing some things over others, but you still had to give those other things up and that's a loss. Sometimes, happiness comes with a loss.

But I think that what makes Camila not the typical "jealous wife" OR passive wife is:

--While we are getting an unreliable version of Camila in that she's talking to her child and I don't think she'd just tell Julia that she thought her dad was going to leave her outright.... I think that generally, Camila was one of if not the most emotionally mature person in the book, and so when she says she didn't believe Billy was going to leave her, I think she's telling the truth. Mostly. I think that she had doubts and she was jealous; but she also knew deep down that he wouldn't do it, based off their very real trust and love and bond.

--Camila is mature enough to recognize that Billy can be in love with two people at once and that it doesn't matter because his choice has been made. But I think what people often miss is that Camila also makes a choice. She didn't have to choose to stay with Billy. Camila isn't a friendless nobody who couldn't find a way to survive. If Camila wanted to leave Billy, I think she would. It would be hard, but she would. In recognizing that Billy is in love with Daisy and there are things Daisy can offer Billy that Camila never will be able to, she has to make a tough call, and she makes it of her own free will.

--There's that entire moment in the book that people gloss over where Camila spent the day with an old flame, and Billy is basically like "it was don't ask, don't tell". I fully believe Camila fucked that guy. At min, she heavily considered it. And like... who could blame her either way when her husband is having an existential crisis over his bandmate? Billy can't even fucking say shit because he knows that whatever he did was WORSE. He fucked some randoms back in the day, and he fell in love with someone else--and I think TJR is undeniably saying that the emotional affair was 100% much more hurtful than any random fucks Billy OR Camila had. I think that by giving Camila that complexity, the idea of the passive wife is called into question. And I think that Billy and Camila knew what happened, but would of course never tell their fucking kid that.

--Lol idk, I'm not above Camila being emotional and jealous because that's so valid. But the Camila I know was never a "her or me" girl because she knew it was done. It was her. It was always her. That kind of "lady of the manor", "he may do what he wishes but he comes home to me, he's MINE" type doesn't get enough main character play in fiction and I hate that we don't see enough of it. Because I think it's very real. I think there are many marriages that function and function that way. Sometimes not well. Sometimes, though--people work it out and find a happiness. And I was fascinated with Camila in the book because of that.
