how i learned ttrpg design, part 3
you can check out part 1 here and part 2 here
as always, this is about my personal experience learning ttrpg design, and i claim no particular expertise or authority on what constitutes "good" game design
3
so far, i've discussed the games i drew on for the start of my ttrpg education. now let's talk about how to improve (when you need to/if you want to). now, i'll say i don't think "improving" is a great way to think about it. i prefer to think about it as "how to be aware of the tools you need to accomplish your design goals"
for some people, the three games i've discussed are plenty for them to get started. these people tend to like experimenting for themselves and then doing more research when they need help. (i fall in this category.) other people may want to read more before starting in earnest. this is also a smart way to go. (obviously you can go overboard with researching so much that you never actually start, but we are far from that place here.) either way, at some point you'll need more information than you currently have.
how do you find the wisdom you seek? the best answer is simply asking for help from people you look up to/trust. but i've never been good at asking for help, so uhhh this post exists
quick story time. i recently visited maryland to go to my partner's sibling's wedding. in a local comic shop's manga section, i saw this book. i was like, oh fun, it's a manga about kids playing a goblin slayer ttrpg.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but then, when i opened the book...
Tumblr media
mechanics!!
it's a TTRPG!! i don't know anything about goblin slayer, but now i'm combing through this book for cool tech. of note so far: at the end of every round of combat, each player has to make an attrition check. fail that, and your fatigue score goes up. at 4 fatigue, you fall unconscious. at 5, you die. punishes long fights and incentivizes players to find alternate solutions. it uses only d6s. and there are sections of fiction illustrated with beautiful manga art. these choices feel old school to me, but it came out in 2019. now i'm really excited. i'll get to see what japanese osr is like!
to me, this pursuit of ttrpg tech feels like discovering an ancient library and searching through old tomes for the power i seek. and there's an online version of this that anyone can dig through for ttrpg tech: osr blogs
old school renaissance/revival, or "osr," as far as i understand it, is a ttrpg genre/design paradigm, typically along the lines of old school d&d. i'm not the best person to explain this, but the way i think about this school of design is it tends to prioritize player skill over character skill. it's the difference between solving a puzzle and rolling to solve a puzzle. because of this, they often make really cool mechanics for challenging players that don't just amount to "roll a 20, do the thing." they also tend to share their thoughts on traditional blogs.
here's an amazing, meticulously catalogued library of keystone OSR posts
by marcia b., @/traversefantasy on twitter, who has an OSR blog of her own using marxist and freudian frameworks for analysis
rise up comus
by josh mcCroo, who's working on a game called his majesty the worm. pretty sure i don't have to say anything else
permanent cranial damage
by ava islam, whose assertion that "Armour Class and Hit Points are the same thing" blew my mind when i was starting out
goblin's henchman
which is where I found the hex flower tech that i adapted for HEXFALL's main mechanic
and one non-OSR blog, that of jay dragon
yes i am a possum creek fangirl. this blog is bananas good. if you haven't read up on playground theory, oh boy you're in for a treat
final takeaway: you never know where you'll find new tools and ideas!
obviously credit people and don't use what's not yours. but have fun and share cool tech with others when you find it!
hope this was helpful <3
p.s. another place that apparently used to have a ton of ttrpg activity was google+. every so often i hear whispers of digital libraries filled with all sorts of salvaged g+ ttrpg treasures. never seen an invite link with my own eyes though. if you hear anything, let me know, will ya?

Since Hollywood is on strike (take down the greedy studio bastards!) and I saw a post calling people to check out non-American media - let's start a rec list!
as far as I know these are on Netflix (I don't have any other streaming subscriptions at the moment so I can't rec anything from the others) and might be available online *elsewhere* with a little internet magic.
La casa de papel (also known as Money Heist) A group of criminals are robbing the Spanish Mint - chaos ensues. I think everyone and their grandmother has seen this by now but still. I loved this show - I stayed up until stupid o'clock because i HAD to know what was going to happen next and how they were going to get out of the shit they'd gotten themselves into. 5 seasons. La casa de las flores (also known as House of flowers) Think telenovelas/soap operas. It's unhinged, it's funny, it's a little queer (mlm and wlw). Long lost children, affairs, Big Family Secrets, drag queens - what more could you ask for?? 3 seasons, a special episode (la case de las flores el funeral), and a film (la casa de las flores la pelicula)
Anne+ (film + 1 of 2 seasons tv show - it originated as a webseries so the episodes are pretty short but Netflix deleted the second season) The life and loves of Anne - a queer millennial living in Amsterdam.
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga Queer (wlw) Bollywood film. A friend recced it to me once. I had never watched a Bollywood film in my life, didn't know anything about the genre, but still enjoyed it. It's a drama. Don't go into this thinking it's the Hindi version of the L word though or you will be disappointed.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan Another queer (mlm) bollywood film my friend recced me. It's a little more "blatant" than the one I mentioned before (this one is from 2020, the other 2019) and it's more of a comedy This one is not on Netlfix - it used to be on Amazon prime but I don't know if it still is. I found it *elsewhere* though with better subtitles than on amazon.
Kalifat This is a Swedish show about a young girl getting pulled into the world of extremist Islam, a young mother who already is in the kalifat (and wants to leave) and a (female) journalist trying to help her. It's intense but really good - and kind of scary how easy it is fall down an extremist internet rabbit hole.
Meskina Dutch romantic comedy about a Dutch/Moroccan woman in her 30s who is still single and her family play matchmaker. Featuring one of the funniest women in the Netherlands (Soundos el Ahmadi - who is also a stand up comedian and her shows are on netflix too)
Isi & Ossi German romantic comedy film about a rich girl who wants to go to culinary school but her father won't let her, so she pretends to be in a relationship with a poor guy who is also a boxer to piss off her parents.
Family business Completely unhinged French comedy series about a guy who turns his family's butchershop into a shop that sells weed - because he heard weed was about to be legalised in France. Really funny - 3 seasons.
Lupin French crime/heist show - but from the POV of the thief. Based on/inspired by the Arsène Lupin books. With Omar Sy. IT'S SO GOOD! 2 seasons, season 3 coming in October.
Dirty Lines Dutch (kind of) comedy about a woman who takes a job at a sex phone line.
reblog and add your own!

Bts Reaction: Ramadan Edition
Tumblr media
BTS and Female Reader are friends.
Muslim Reader. but anyone can read it.
Warning ⚠️: If it makes you uncomfortable don't read it. Cringefest. Gif credit to owners.
Meanings at end.
Kim Namjoon.
Tumblr media
Namjoon always makes sure that he doesn't cross your boundaries and is a very respectful person in general and that was one of the reasons why you and him were great friends. You guys talked about various things.
Soon enough you start talking about your religion. Islam. Which is an important aspect in your life. You try your best to satisfy his curiosity but its not enough. You give him some books you had and devours them. As Ramadan approaches. He wishes you Ramadan Mubarak. That's something you're happy about and it would be very nice if it stopped there but now everytime you curse Namjoon gives you a disappointed look.
"Good Muslims are careful of what their toungue utters." He said on an occasion.
"I dont know isn't that dress showing too much skin." He continued saying on another.
"Namjoon it's literally full length."
"Wow sarcasm is haraam." He tells you one fine morning.
"Yes so is murder."
"It's also illegal."
"I know."
Congrats on making your friend a member of Haram* police.
Kim Seokjin
Tumblr media
You and Jin had bonded over your love for food. Currently you were explaining to him why you can eat chicken but not his chicken.
"There's a particular way for the meat to be cut so that its halal*"
Then you told him about things which were and weren't allowed.
For Ramadan Jin helps you plan your meals so they are the right amount of healthy and hearty.
He also helps prep your food and brings you meals to add to the iftar*. He is always caring and kind and helps you in anyway he can.
Also finds it funny when he hears the Quran translation of a verse talking about Jinn* and Mankind.
"So you're telling me that you never told me that your holy book keeps mentioning me."
Starts calling you mankind for fun. Changes your contact information too.
Min Yoongi
Tumblr media
He had heard you listening to the Quran*. He had grown curious about it. So you'd told him what it was.
Yoongi being the king of trivia had an idea about Muslims but becoming closer to you his curiosity had grown. He is #1 supportive and ready to defend you if needed. You could always talk to him about feeling left out and isolated and viceversa.
He always wanted to be part of a charity event so when you told him about how their was a Ramadan drive to give food and necessities to the less fortunate he was excited to volunteer fir it.
For Ramadan he accompanied you to the organised Iftar and learned more about the importance Islam gave on kindness and community among other things.
Jung Hoseok
Tumblr media
Hoseok had come across Abaya* one day. He had been online shopping muslim clothes so that he could gift you something for your birthday.
You told him about how modesty was valued in Islam. That in one lecture you had heard it was said that women were something precious and you keep precious things safely and covered.
So as Ramadan approached and you talked about getting clothes for Eid. Hoseok got heavily involved. Going as far as sending you outfit inspos for Friday prayers, Taraweeh (special Ramadan prayers). And even getting himself an outfit with a prayer cap.
Sometimes you scare him by telling him Jin stories. Poor him gets afraid to do things alone.
Wind blows.
"AHHHH!!!!!!! This house is haunted. I can't do this anymore."
Park Jimin
Tumblr media
When Jimin learns about your fasting. He is surprised to know that you can't eat or drink during it.
"Not even water."
"No Jimin, not even water."
"So how long?"
"It's from before sunrises to sunset for a month." You inform.
Jimin takes care not to eat or drink infront of you. Except one day he finds you eating.
"Y/N why are you eating aren't you supposed to be fasting."
"Not today."
"So you can skip fasts."
"Only if you're sick...or on your periods."
"So?"
"PARK JIMIN." You whisper shout.
"I'm sorry. Do you want chocolates."
He might be a little slow at catching up but he's got the spirit.
Kim Taehyung
Tumblr media
Your friendship with Taehyung was based on both of you believing in angels.
So when Taehyung heard about you fasting he decided to join you. On your day off you were prepared to have Taehyung accompany you... or so you thought. After Suhoor* which you almost missed because it was way past his bedtime and was before he ever thought about waking up.
In the morning he wakes and starts preparing breakfast midway realising he was fasting. Tweets throughout the day.
Min 5456 without water. I'm thirsty.
Min 6544 without water. I'm sorry for wasting water in the shower.
Sec 7777777 without food. Hangry. ... and board. Bored.
He is also behind you at mid noon about how he was bored luckily you prepared art supplies to make a Ramadan Kareem Banner. Soon after which you started preparing iftar which he thoroughly enjoyed making and later consuming.
Jeon Jungkook
Tumblr media
Jungkook dug all Ramadan Memes and enjoys sending them to you. Specially if he can see your reaction.
Jk: do you want to see my date?
Y/n: .....
*sends a picture of date (fruit)*
Also starts saying Bismillah (in the name of god~said before starting a task) , Inshallah (if God wills ) etc.
Also he is somehow always present during both Suhoor and Iftar.
The foods to good to resist. More excited about it than you are.
"It's to give you company Y/n. You can't fast by eating only a packet of Ramen."
But also helps you with odd jobs like cutting fruits for Iftar or frying so that you can pray in peace.
Tumblr media
*haram= unlawful.
**halal= lawful/ allowed
***iftar= when the fast is broken
****quran= holy book.
*****Abaya. Its a dress worn by females that covers the whole body and is usually black in color
******Suhoor. Dawn meal before fasting.
*******Jinn : djinn.

Virtual Sexologist in Patna, Bihar for Aurangabad Sexual Patients | Dr. Sunil Dubey
About sexual patients in Aurangabad district in Bihar:
Hello friends, thank you very much, now as per your need and demand we are in Aurangabad district of Bihar. Actually, Aurangabad is a city in Bihar which is famous for its grand temples, historical sites and Islamic pilgrimage sites. All these things always attract the tourists visiting this city. The estimated population of this town is nearly 35.5 lakhs.
Tumblr media
According to the health report survey of this district, more than four lakh people here are suffering from some sexual disease and other diseases. This is really a matter of concern for the people of this city. In case of general or emergency medical condition, they always turn to their local city hospitals for their treatment. How did I get here?
Reading tarot cards? Oracle Cards? Pendulums? Astrodice? For friends and family in living rooms and kitchen tables and project apartment floors to Jesslyn Blue Tarot?
This website? Reading tarot for a major tech company in California? Doing personal readings on Zoom and pop-ups and event bookings? Everything?
Tarot was, simply put, one outlet.
Ever since I was a child, I knew there was more to this world than what we could see. There was more than the physical... I was experiencing unexplainable things at a young age, unsure of what was even happening to me. It felt familiar, yet confusing. Fun, yet uncontrollable. My hunches in college always turned out to be right. The rest of our friends did forget their I.D.'s in a haste to leave the dorms and now they can't get in, therefore we all came in the same car and now we all leave in the same car. I never ordered one drink. Something told me we weren't staying very long.
The only thing I could think of was the esoteric, spiritual, and ancient. It must make it make sense. I was green, but I was on the right path. The online information I found felt jumbled and inconclusive, possibly too mature for my young mind, also realize, it was the time of dial-up internet. My sights turned to library books and any books I could find at Barnes & Noble, thrift stores, and occult-specific shops.
One lucky day... I found a small, pocket-sized tarot deck. It included a concise guidebook. That day swung a door wide open within me that could never be closed... The pursuit of the unknown. Most of the knowledge I have accumulated on spirituality, psychic abilities, the craft, and divination tools have been through personal experiences, reading, consulting other psychics, reiki healers, tarot readers, spiritualists, and seeking many answers from within myself.
It's no joke when people say: all answers are within.
Through meditations, trances, and shroom journeys, I have only enhanced my overall wellbeing, spiritual understanding, and spiritual gifts.
My parents were raised to practice the Christian religion. My mother, a devout churchgoer every Sunday; a part of the community, constantly a helping hand. She would take my pentacle necklaces off. Warned me of what I may be dabbling into. It was such ignorance and miscommunication.
But I felt at home in my new studies with my tarot cards. They were a constant companion.
There was a period of solitary study before anyone was aware of my tarot deck.
When stepping into anything esoteric... that differs from the Judeo-Christian-Islamic religions that people were raised in, it is a shift in one's perception of the world around them. You are entering a new world. You may still be in the same world, but it is not the same anymore.
The more aware I became... practiced my tarot, built my confidence, purchased more books, spoke with older readers... the more I shouted to the rooftops what I could do with tarot. Offered tarot readings after my poetry features. Offered tarot readings on our lunch breaks during acting gigs. On breaks at modeling gigs. People formed lines. I met amazing individuals. Got follow-up DMs. Phone calls. Texts. It was a sense of serving a purpose that filled and motivated me.
I told anyone and everyone that I was offering tarot readings. When entering a poetry event or a film festival cocktail hour, I mentioned my tarot services. Mentioned how I wanted to help. Give these divine messages. Give this guidance. I enjoy reading tarot, connecting to the divine, and being of help to someone's journey.
When an audition came along for a tarot reader in December of 2020, I hopped on it. Enough said. They were impressed and I was booked for Mongo DB's virtual "Reinvent." My gratitude to them and Malka Media! Ashe! That experience pushed me forward. Think bigger, I told myself.
But there were many bumps along this road. Abusive partners that downplayed my abilities and were energy vampires. Family members that weren't very supportive. These dark times required delving inside of myself to secure a solid footing in who I was and what I knew to be true with all of my being. Reconfirming what I was currently capable of and what the future also had in store regarding the evolution of my capabilities. How do I do this without a brick-and-mortar establishment? I'm a SAG-AFTRA actor. I work long hours on sets. I do comedy improv. I model. I'm a poet. A writer. An artist. An American gypsy in this crazy world. Gig work. Etc. Clients may be far away. How do we reach each other? How do I set liveable rates that are also affordable for a divination practice? That, too, was super conflicting. Some would scoff. Even told me I should never charge for a tarot reading. It was a gift to keep on giving. I needed to always be able to help people.
Mind you, all of this I have absolutely reflected on as I moved into taking my tarot skills more seriously and actively advertising this business.  I am spiritual, but I am practical. We walk a fine line. Let's just say, I would never turn away a person in need.
Thus, jesslynbluetarot.com was born in September of 2021. Available for: live Zoom readings, emailed pre-recorded video readings, or event bookings. Even without the website, I'm happy to accept bookings via email: [email protected]. The right clients that need me are now able to easily find me. What is meant to be is meant to be... and it will never pass you by.
Like I said, tarot, simply put, is one outlet.
Ashe.

Travel Tips for Visiting Dubai for The First Time
Tumblr media
Are you traveling to Dubai as a tourist for the very first time? Let’s explore some travel tips, so that you can get the most out of Dubai during your first time visit in here.
Getting Your Visa
Unless you hold a passport from a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country, you'll need to obtain a visa to enter Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. Dubai visa for US Citizens has a validity of 30 days. You can apply for it online before coming. Be sure to have a printed copy of your visa approval letter before boarding your flight.
The visa process is straightforward but do give yourself enough time to complete the application to avoid last-minute delays. Double-check that your passport meets the validity requirements and that you have adequate blank pages available.
Booking Accommodations
When choosing where to stay, consider proximity to the metro system which makes it easy to explore different neighbourhoods and attractions. Staying somewhere along the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor puts you near many popular sites.
For your first visit, consider staying in Deira or Bur Dubai on the northern side of Dubai Creek. This area offers a fascinating glimpse into old Dubai before the mega-development began. The Al Fahidi Historical District is packed with traditional architecture, souks, and museums.
Packing Tips
What you pack for Dubai depends largely on when you visit. If visiting in summer, pack lightweight, light-coloured clothing along with hats, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen. For other months, bring some warmer items for the evenings, but shorts and T-shirts will likely suffice during daytime.
As a conservative Islamic society, Dubai has a dress code requiring shoulders and knees to be covered when exploring mosques and other religious sites. Avoid excessively tight, sheer, or revealing outfits.
Getting Around
Dubai has excellent public transportation including the Dubai Metro, which has stops near most attractions. Taxis are widely available and offer a comfortable way to travel between farther flung neighbourhoods and sites.
For crossing Dubai Creek, you can take an abra (traditional ferry) between Deira and Bur Dubai. If spending time on the beach, the Jumeirah Beach Residence and Dubai Marina areas are best accessed by car or taxi.
Exploring the Neighbourhoods
A great way to begin exploring Dubai is simply walking around the Al Fahidi Historical District to admire the traditional wind tower architecture. From there, stop by the Dubai Museum and Grand Mosque before taking an abra across Dubai Creek.
In Deira, wander through narrow lanes and covered souks bursting with gold, spices, electronics, and textiles. Don't miss the bustling Deira Spice and Gold Souks.
Cross back over the Creek to see the outdoor markets and boutiques of Bur Dubai. Stroll through textile and carpet souks before visiting the historic Al Bastakiya neighborhood. The Dubai Frame's glass observation decks provide excellent views.
Sheikh Zayed Road is Dubai's glittering skyscraper corridor. There's plenty of shopping at Dubai Mall and dining at The Beach JBR entertainment complex. Don't miss the iconic Burj Khalifa, and book tickets in advance to go up to At the Top observation deck.
Getting out on the water is recommended, whether by traditional wooden dhow boat or sleek modern yacht. Many companies offer sightseeing cruises or dinner cruises with live entertainment.
Visiting the Mosques in Dubai
To experience Islamic architecture and culture, devote time to visiting some of Dubai's ornate mosques. Non-Muslims can enter many mosques in Dubai but be sure to dress conservatively.
The Jumeirah Mosque is particularly welcoming to visitors. Free one-hour tours operate daily to share insight into Islamic traditions. Cameras are allowed.
The Iranian Mosque features intricate blue tilework and detailed arches reminiscent of ancient Persia.
Built in 1900, the Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque is one of Dubai's oldest. The intricate carvings and decorations are worth seeing.
The Grand Mosque dwarfs them all and is a key landmark of Bur Dubai. Be sure to see this magnificent structure illuminated at night.
Heading to the Desert
No visit to the UAE is complete without experiencing the desert landscapes. Choose between a Desert Safari with dune bashing, camel rides and barbecue dinners or a serene overnight stay at a luxury desert camp.
Arrange an excursion through a reputable tour company for a smoother, safer experience. Morning tours work best in summer to avoid the punishing daytime heat.
Shopping and Dining
Shopping enthusiasts flock to Dubai for good reason. Enormous malls like Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates house every global brand imaginable. Seek out traditional Emirati handicrafts and souvenirs in the old souks and the Dubai Creek Park markets.
Foodies will find diverse culinary delights. Sample Emirati cuisine like harees (wheat porridge) or machboos (spiced rice). Dig into tender Persian kebabs or fresh Indian curries. Jumeirah Beach Road has a terrific selection of restaurants.
With this handy first-time visitor's guide, you'll be equipped for an amazing introduction to spectacular Dubai!

Consider the time of day and traffic conditions, especially during peak hours, to allow for sufficient travel time.
