Sonny wrinkled his nose and you rolled your eyes as you reached for the cup in his hand.

“See? I knew you wouldn’t like it. Just drink your boring black coffee and let me have this little joy,” you told him.

“I’m not saying I didn’t like it.” Sonny’s facial expression betrayed his words and you reached forward to snatch the cup from his hand. He pulled it out of reach and took another sip. “It’s…different.”

“Oh my gosh, Sonny. You are such a nuisance!” You rolled your eyes and this time when you reached out expectedly he handed the cup back to you. “It’s good! It’s…seasonal.” Your defense sounded weak even to your own ears, so you pivoted to a pout.

“I just wanted to see what all of the fuss was about,” Sonny said mildly.

His hand came to rest on your knee and you could feel the warmth through your sweatpants. The weather was finally starting to cool down and you hoped it would also bring a quieter season for the club. Over the summer there had been so much more violence than you remembered growing up. Maybe it was because you were older and squarely in the center of it all, even when you didn’t want to be - which was most of the time, or maybe because it was genuinely a more volatile time. It had been a heavy, sharp summer and there was a faint taste of ozone you imagined cloying to your tongue.

Taking another sip of your pumpkin spice latte you brought yourself back to the present. There was a haunted look in Sonny’s eyes that he thought he was hiding from you and the skin around the bed of his nails was shredded and raw. For everyone’s sake, you hoped autumn would bring a quieter time.

“I’ll stick to pumpkin pie…and plain coffee.” Sonny’s tone was light, but his grip on your knee tightened slightly before relaxing again.

He knew that you knew and a brief flicker of understanding passed between the two of you. Sometimes, it did feel like the old days when you were in your first year of dating. You had already known each other so well by then, dating had given you your own language and your own world with it.

“And I better not see you sneaking a sip when I’m not looking,” you warned him. The corners of your mouth skirted up.

“No chance of that,” Sonny said with a shudder. “You were right. That was truly not good. I was just trying to be polite.” Teasing. The grey in his eyes mellowed to a neutral blue.

You just stuck your tongue out at him before taking another sip and sinking further into the deck chair.
