friendly psa for those who haven't read any of the Chinese version of svsss and/or don't know anything about Chinese: the characters for "luo" in Qiu Jianluo's name and Luo Binghe's name are not the same! Here's a brief explanation of each:

Qiū Jiǎnluó is 秋剪罗：

秋/qiū means 'autumn' (same character as in 沈清秋/Shěn Qīngqiū)

剪/jiǎn is a 形声字, a phono-semantic (or sound-meaning) compound, which means one part indicates the sound and the other part gives its meaning. here, 前/qián on top relates to the pronunciation, and 刀/dāo, 'knife,' on the bottom gives its meaning, which is 'to cut.' it can be found most commonly in compounds like 剪刀 for 'scissors'

罗/luó is a super old character that originally related to catching birds in a net, its meaning has broadened quite a bit and is also present in a lot of 成语/idioms. note that this is pronounced with a rising tone!

Luò Bīnghé is 洛冰河：

洛/luò is part of the name of several irl rivers in China, and is the name of the river in svsss where Binghe was found as a baby. note that this is pronounced with a falling tone!

冰河/bīnghé is a compound word meaning glacier, with 冰 for ice and 河 for river

罗 vs 洛: as you can see, these characters have unique appearances and meanings. In the English translations, it's easy to think they're the same word since we don't have tones, but in Chinese, tone is a major distinguishing factor, so these are not pronounced the same. these characters are both common and would not be confused with each other.

I'm not trying to tell anyone what headcanons they can or can't have, but I do think it's important to remember that for those of us reading media like this in translation, and especially for those of us who are not Chinese, we aren't the target audience, and that means we're going to miss out on some stuff sometimes.

This isn't a fully formed thought, I am just spitballing. But I was thinking about the movie posters by @lukaherehelp and what @lurkingshan wrote here about DFF being a marvel of mystery writing and I started to think is DFF really a horror?

Let me explain, after 4 episode in the past with no hints of anything suprenatural, I am firmly on cap this was all man made, halluciantions and drugs and tech only by humans. If this was suprenatural I would have expected some type hints, like an entity watching the boys at the cabin. Maybe even following them home, eyes in the shadows, stuff like that.

So if you take that into consideration and everything about the horror was manufactured (except the deaths, I guess) do the rules of horror even apply? Every horror elements has been tied to the movie they made, the posters are horror movies only, the temple expands on the lore they used for the movie, the masked killer is from the movie. If it's all tied to the fake movie and the horror elements are all fake, then this isn't a horror story.

Is it both? Because while I would call some of the stuff that happened to Non horrific. I wouldn't call the past 4 episode an horror, a mystery for sure, a thriller definitely but not a horror.

It feels like both the characters and the story are using the horror elements as dressing a way to scare the boys, to torment them, a way to draw us in, to present the ultimate reaction to the cycles of violence and revenge. But it doesn't feel like we are operating in a horror genre, with the genre rules.

I don't know where I am going with this. Mostly I am just wondering about the finale, and what happens when we go back to the present timeline. Because so far the two genres have not operated on the same level, at the same time. We went horror with a pinch of mystery, then mystery/thriller. Then it stands to reason going back to the present will have to juggle both.

I am not saying the story can't do it, or it's a bad decision or anything. This isn't a critique I have just been thinking about everyone calling this a slasher, and expecting slasher/horror endings and I've been wondering about it. Because I looked it up (and I know MDL barely means anything so take it with a grain of salt)

On MDL, Dead Friend Forever is not described as an horror series.

i just remembered a merthur fic i read eons ago where the writing was really good (and i finished it and left kudos) but something about the premise left a bad taste in my mouth after it was over. because. at the heart of it, it was canon era merlin and arthur who were dating or whatever, but arthur still didn’t know about the magic. even after all the intimacy and explicitness and all that jazz.

i didnt think much of it at the time, but whenever it pops into my head now, it just seems so not merlin to me. (ofc i never said anything bad to the author or the fic (not that i can even remember it now LMFAO) because i chose to read it and. you know. being decent is being kind to free brilliant writing where people can differ on opinions. etc etc).

i think, in my mind in how i characterize merlin at his core, he would never. ever. agree to be intimate with someone without telling them about the magic. exhibit a being will. exhibit b being freya.

because even if his life is shrouded in lies and deception and a power overwhelming to anyone lesser than him, i don’t believe he would allow himself to feel completely loved if they didn’t know all of him.

and its not only because its arthur of all people. its gwaine. its lancelot (who knew but at a distance and only briefly). its gwen.

he keeps a HUGE fucking part of himself away and hidden because he life quite literally depended on it—and even that doesn’t fully begin to cover why he he didn’t say anything, but i digress. now, merlin can be called many, many things, but selfish is not one of them. not even REMOTELY close. not even a little bit. he is selfless to a violent fault. one might even say it’s his biggest weakness (again. i digress).

he kept quiet because—at his core—he is so fucking selfless that he would never allow himself or someone else to love him like that without knowing about it completely. not to mention that anyone who had found out about his magic ultimately died in his own arms in a way he thinks it probably happened by his own hand.

so. all of this to say that i don’t believe a “romantic” relationship could exist before the magic reveal. at the very least, maybe it could, but merlin would never ever fucking let that happen or go further than words. he is selfless. he will not let himself bring others down. he would not show his complete heart and soul without the other party knowing about the other half of him. (i.e., why the finale is so brutally raw. merlin. finally being seen for the first time as a complete person. allowing himself to feel the love that had brought him to this very moment since the start).

Welp. I impulsively made the very incomplete WIP public on YouTube so ig I’ll post it here too.

Project I did as a final last semester. The green art was actually made about 2 years ago around when vax special aired and I touched it up/completed the concept (in a bit of a rush at the end) for class.

Kind of a character study for Kyle as a whole and what I thought he probably would be going through after losing his friends in Vax special- First he’s feeling angry and frustrated, then he kind of lowkey dissociates, then his pent up emotions finally spill over and he finds himself crying which is supposed to be a big deal since he really doesn’t do that very much!

canadian thoughts on langa's hometown

it's never actually specified in sk8 the infinity where in canada langa is from, but i am canadian and very autistic so i have been overthinking this since i watched the show and have come to what i think is a solid conclusion that might be proven totally wrong as soon as season 2 comes out

there's a few things we know about langa that i think are particularly relevant to narrowing down where he might be from:

he lived somewhere with easy, regular access to snowboarding

he's catholic (or at least went to catholic school, but from the bits showing him crossing himself i think it's meant to be understood that he's at least... loosely catholic himself, not just a "going to catholic school because they're better funded" situation)

he's never been to the coastline

he and his father speak english

if not for point 3, my easy bet would be that he's from british columbia – most of the biggest ski resorts in canada are in BC (including whistler-blackcomb, the largest ski resort in all of north america) and BC even has the largest (and most historically entrenched) japanese population in the country, which at a glance would make it a likely place for nanako to have immigrated to.

however, BC is a coastal province, with vancouver (by far the largest city) being right on the coast and victoria (the capital) being on an island. even if langa lived in a city further inland, the idea that his family never traveled to the coast in his entire life before coming to japan seems very unlikely to me.

however, there's a place that better fits all the criteria for langa's hometown: québec, specifically montréal. montréal is only a bit over an hour's drive from mont-tremblant, the #1 ski resort in eastern north america, so oliver would have been able to take langa there all season with no trouble. the city has a very large catholic population and québec has historically been a catholic center of canada, so langa growing up catholic also fits (while the very low church attendance despite the large catholic population also tracks with him not having any seeming involvement in the catholic community in naha after moving there.) and while québec as a whole is largely francophone, montréal has the largest population of solely anglophone and bilingual people in the province, so the fact that langa and oliver are shown speaking english rather than french wouldn't be unusual if they're specifically from montréal.

poutine, langa's favorite food, is actually also from québec specifically, despite its association with canada as a whole and some people from québec even consider the broader association with canada to be cultural appropriation lol

so yeah, my verdict until proven otherwise is that langa most likely grew up in montréal!

(my one quibble is that if his father is meant to be québecois his name would probably be olivier rather than oliver, but ehhh if he's from a totally anglophone family then that doesn't really matter since it doesn't have to be a french-canadian name)

also, as a fun fact: the mont-tremblant resort is absolutely gorgeous, and would be both very visually distinctive and beautiful to stylize if they wanted to have langa and the gang go to canada in season 2... 👀

Doctor Who and the constant link to Books or Stories is so good actually. So heres a selection of quotes and my thoughts on them all.

I pick these specifically, because each are sad in their own way. The idea of Reinettes life being 'pressed together like pages of a book' while River, dead, has been 'left (me) like a book on a shelf' is such an interesting parallel.

Its really hard to actually explain my point here, Stories as a concept are important to Doctor Who.

'We're all stories in the end' has a good link to 'left (me) like a book on a shelf' because at that point, River had become a story. Nothing more. That was the end of her story. I mentioned the Reinette quote because the events of Rivers life are 'pressed together like pages in a book' but in a literal sense and the future incarnations of the Doctor do 'step from one to another'.

I think its beautiful how Doctor Who can either purposely reference itself constantly or just do it on pure coincidence.

The continuity throughout Doctor Who is pure art. Theres always links and references that take several watches and thought to actually connect.

There are probably many more quotes that I could add, or make links to. However its 4am my time and its about time I got some rest. I just happened to think about the tiny parallel between Reinettes and Rivers words. Goodnight All
