one thing i noticed (form personal experience and by observing other artists) is that the longer you draw and create, the more boring it gets to simply replicate references, especially when it comes to characers' fashion choices.
with bnha, i keep mine pretty simple and basic because teens ARE very trend-loyal, but mainly im just lazy lol, but when i AM motivated, i love to think about characters' personal style, what could influence them, but also more trivial things such as budget into account, which is why i love to draw Deku in basic tees or clothes provided by his school (while bakugo gets to wear ed hardy and shoto wears arcteryx). i also love to limit the items like its just more realistic to me when someone as ordinary as deku wears the same 5 crewnecks all the time
which brings me to my actual point, namely that the more frequently you draw, the more you learn to do research andto combine your findings into sth new rather than staying faithful to one reference, and i think that's what makes good art so good, being able to draw inspiratioin from all kinds of niches and creating something that feels very authentic and suspends the spectator's disbelief. sometimes i see art and i know exactly which fashion editorial or which kpop idol was referenced, and I'm not insinuating these are bad things i do that too (less frequently now but i sure did!), my point is it's kind of nice to see how ALL artist start out with rather derivative art but eventually move on to create more authentic art that is less about drawing beautiful and perfect people and more about trying to individualize them and that ALSO means giving them weird clothes, scars, asymmetric eyes, a receding hairline etc. like drawing the same beautiful character 200 times gets so boring and it's just more fun to try and make them a bit more human

How many comments do you expect?! Just looking at your most recent WIPs, paper bags has 11 from its last update but no updates since last month, but forever and how it ends had less the last chapters of it. If comments are what you want and keep you writing, then aren’t you focused on the wrong WIPs? Oh yeah, it’s the whims that have taken over. You say you want comments but then ignore them for the whims. But the whims lately have not gotten the readers/comments that you want, so you re-blog the fic itself or re-blog posts about comments. Just write what you want, Em and who cares whether people comment or not.
I really think you're misunderstanding me.
If I wrote SOLELY for comments, I would have stopped writing as soon as I entered this fandom. I don't think I had a truly 'popular fic' until TBART-- I was writing fics regularly and consistently long before that though.
So, if you're telling me to just write what I want: great, I do. I have. I will continue to.
I'm still allowed to want comments though when I'm putting my work up in a space that enables and encourages commenting.
Should people comment if they read and enjoyed the fic? I believe so. Should people comment if they don't like the fic or it isn't for them? No, absolutely not. I don't expect that.
But. When the hits and bookmarks and other stats are saying that people are, at the very least, clicking on these fics but not saying anything-- it can be discouraging. Even when the whims are controlling. Hearing a little voice from the void is encouraging, and can help a writer find the energy to work on a wip when maybe they didn't before because they know it isn't JUST them excited about it.
You've mentioned my 'popular fics' again and the thing is that this behaviour has HAPPENED on those fics. When I talk about this, I'm not talking about fics where the ratio lines up and I can tell that it's just a fic that's not for everyone. I'm talking about fics where people have demanded updates and then gone quiet when I've posted them.
Not to bring up the cake metaphor again but: If I baked over the weekend to give myself a sweet treat, brought the leftovers into work and watched everyone have a piece but say nothing. I'm going to feel weird bringing anything in again.
If people say they liked it! Hey! I'm probably going to bake that thing again the next time I feel like baking. Even if I don't bake that exact cake, I'm still likely to share what I did bake.

Autism Brain: I like Donnie because he’s great representation and I just generally like well written canon autistic characters who are confident whilst also facing issues that I face (he also reminds me of Abed for some reason). That’s why he’s the best!
ADHD Brain (who also really likes psychology and heard Mikey was into that): No, Mikey’s our favorite because we were always perceived as a really energetic and optimistic person for a long time, and we’ve always liked characters like that! That’s why he should be our favorite!
Oldest Child Brain: YOU FOOLS! The overprotective oldest sibling trope is obviously the superior trope! Raph is gonna be our favorite! Also, he’s baby
Rest of me, who has barely started the show and is only a few episodes in: I heard a lot of people like Leo…
Other mes: *Turns angrily*
Autism: You-
ADHD: WHY-
Oldest Sibling: DON’T EVEN-

#i don’t think i can overstate how much i hate the ‘poor reggie forced into bad things :(‘ take lol#i mean. i get that it’s probably the only way people who don’t like dealing w complexity can make sense of this ship#which like. fair i guess. but they’re also often the loudest in the fandom and that’s when i get annoyed
literally taking words out of my own mouth. and yknow, i love jegulus actually, but what i love is the opposite dynamic that you could never get with prongsfoot, the "running into each other in the battlefield from opposite sides" kind of drama and the way they really force each other to get out of their comfort zone and confront their biases. and i swear i can't read 90% of todays jegulus fics for this exact reason it drives me insaneeeee
(also the best kind of jegulus (and the only right kind) is the one where both of them would still choose sirius over each other)
(also how are your tags always better than the actual post asfjk)
i’ve read exactly two jegulus fics i like so far. i don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone that both of them have sirius as a central character who’s in the know about the relationship since the beginning lol (it’s this and this) sadly, i don’t think either of those are angsty enough for ur tastes :p
also gosh yes!! i think, of all we know about them, one thing both of them would be agreed on is that sirius is no. 1. like even in a war setting for example, where they’re both on different sides, i can see them meeting clandestinely just to come to the mutual conclusion that no matter what happens, sirius does not get hurt. but also, the possible flip side of that is so much angst. jealousy, bitterness, possessiveness—both of them want sirius’ attention in different ways and there’s resentment between them for the longest time because of it. reg because he thinks james stole his brother and james because he thinks reg could’ve done more to protect him/doesn’t like how his actions hurt sirius.
i think james’ black and white morality would also play a big role here. in his mind, regulus should’ve chose sirius above everything else. his actions of siding with his family would read as betrayal to james who has no patience for that or anything that hurts sirius. he doesn’t care for the complexities and nuances that reg’s life is probably made of.
on the other hand, i think regulus would also be at least a little aware of that fact? and he’d hate the fact that james has it so easy. not just in terms of obvious privilege (which the blacks do too) but also like, how easy it is for him to be brave and moral and good when regulus has to claw his way out to achieve some semblance of balance in his life. james’ judgement seems not just hypocritical but also unfounded for him, because james has never had to fight against the kind of pressures he had. and he knows, deep down, where j is coming from too which makes him even more angry at the whole situation.
i can see both of them hiding this animosity from sirius for the longest time, because they know he wouldn’t like it, at all. he puts up this front that he doesn’t care about his family but he does, and james doesn’t wanna make that anxiety worse. no one can be blind to how close sirius is to james, def not regulus, so he puts up the bare minimum effort into making sure he doesn’t show more hostility than required. also,,,,i think both of them might have this latent fear that if they force sirius to choose, they might be the ones left behind? like,,i don’t think sirius will actually do that but it’s an irrational anxiety that they do not wanna materialise under any circumstance so they try their best to make sure it never happens.
and sirius would be the impetus of change for both of them, in my mind. they’re a package deal on both ends so they have to learn to, like u said, confront their biases. i genuinely think sirius is central to a jegulus arc so seeing him cut out or turned into the villain or used only as a wolfstar puppet just really, really enrages me lol

TDI Advice wanted!
Hi TD fans! I'm planning a rewrite of TDI, the cast will be 18 for in-universe reasons (think legal contracts, I'm not gonna be weird about them). I'm aiming to make it more realistic and in line with the 2007 aesthetic, i.e era appropriate lingo & references, mobile phones are rare, homophobia is a bigger concern etc, but I'm wondering how far I should take it?
In the end I'll write what I enjoy, but should I lean more heavily into the gritty side of reality TV both on and behind the screen, include more notable sexism, potential slurs and creepy behaviours etc? The point is for there to be believable drama in-universe and the topics planned all have some merit to be present. I have some hard lines I'll never cross (see last tags on the post for those curious) and I want people familiar with the themes to feel seen rather than exploited reading it.
At the end of the day the cast are just youngsters getting to know each other and themselves. I want to humanize them and write believable conflicts without demonizing anyone, it is intended as a character driven story after all. But I also want to know what others think would make for an enjoyable read/take on the show.
The cast will inevitably diverge from their canon counterparts, but I am unsure how to handle certain characters, an example being LeShawna. She's clearly based on a racist stereotype, but her personality, background and lingo are a huge part of her appeal and I'd rather portray her in a better light than change her from the ground up. If you have any pointers I can keep in mind for her or anyone else you think is often portrayed poorly in canon or fanon then please let me hear your takes! This goes for non-TDI castmates as well, even if they don't show up in the story I wanna know what people think does and doesn't work for them and their tropes/traits cause it might still be relevant!
#Td#Tdi#Total drama#Id love any opinions no matter how personal or miniscule. Even outside of fic writing I love hearing theories/analyses.#Also: I already have some things very strongly set in stone so I won't change this project to perfectly appease someone else's vision#Some charas will inevitably be OOC at points but I am using canon information and what we know from stuff like other seasons and their bios#-as my basis for most things. Because while I want to explore some unrelated topics I still want this to be the TD cast. Not my OCs.#That said there will be personal headcanons thrown in. But I hope they flow well with canon and don't stand out as a sore thumb.#Some HCs might replace canon traits but only if I think they were bad/random or underdeveloped.#And if you have songs you think fit the campers pls send them my way! Good character playlists really helps w getting into their headspace#While I am a huge IOTS fan I don't intend to reference it in my work. No gore or character deaths because that stuff is too impactful both-#-for the characters and for the show in-universe. It would derail everything which is what makes IOTS work but is unfitting here.#All TWs will be listed once I start writing. I'm happy to tag niche phobias/squicks/TWs as well so if you're interested in reading but-#-worry that something specific might be included then just ask! No matter how silly it might seem I've got you covered.#What I won't include: SA nor heavy sexism/racism. I might not touch racism much at all outside of beauty standards/racist tv tropes.#Any heavy topic included will be approached with a lot of care and consideration for those affected. There will be 0 shock value inclusions

every once in a while I go through my AO3 subscriptions and I look for fic that haven't updated in a really long time and that I have no memory of (so even if they do update by some miracle I will have no idea what it is), and I delete them. I don't know why I do this. like, there is no benefit in doing it. it's just a compulsion.
anyway. I did that today and I saw a fic I remember loving and I was like, 'that author was really invested in this fic, I wonder why they haven't updated in a while'... checks their profile 'oh, of course they haven't updated this incredibly niche Star Wars fic, they're NECK DEEP IN FUCKING HAWAII 5-0!'
the absolute whiplash of it all

uuuuugggggggh, I really want this fic to be ALREADY finished at the same level of quality that I produced for the opening bit
(which i guess expecting it to be done and easy discredits how much work went into the opening bit but still....it’s so so far from being done and i wish it was already done because i want to find someone who is also in love with this idea and analysis and talk to them about it)
#look it's a crossover so it's going to be doomed to obscurity#and the fact that i'm trying to ape danged sir terry pratchett does not make this any easier#BUT NO ONE ELSE IS GOING TO WRITE THIS IDEA SO GUESS I'M STUCK WITH WRITING IT#i've got about four fics total...#i've only got about four fics total...but only one is conceivably close to completion#and two are frankly above my skill level (this is one of them)#but...i get the feeling that these things are so niche that i am the only one who's gonna properly speak them into existence#(not necessarily niche as in no one will enjoy them but i also zero expect to find someone else writing them the way i want)#if only i had more energy more often to do anything other than army-drag myself once a week to working on any one of them#rose-ten cyborg dystopia thing that combines my favorite fandom-specific tropes has a monster plot#and i've been avoiding it for over a year because i can't bring myself to write this dang next scene#martha character analysis piece is super dang hard because i'm laser focused on every line (i swear i'm gonna have to be a poet or somthng#because i don't think i'm cut out for novel-ing with the amount of scrutiny that each line gets)#and also the martha piece involves Sensitive Subjects and Heavy Things that require respectful research and so. much. thought#susan character study/science-fangirling piece's end is literally in sight but i keep not writing it because i have to do describing#(i hate describing. it's so hard. stupid plot and things that happened are way harder than conversations or thoughts)#and also the remaining scene and ending involves writing about some kinda heavy stuff#then this crossover piece! which combines all of the problems! except i guess objective length#it's supposed to be only 4 chapters max but it's 4 plotted chapters of distilled prose with heavy subject matter and satire#and it needs aforementioned Plot which i don't care much about inventing but really is necessary for the story to work right#people who say fanfiction is easy are wrong actually

it always kind of throws me how much of fanfic hating posts on here focus on Tropes (enemies to lovers, coffee shop au, soulmate au, you know the ones) when those Tropes only form a small percentage of fanfics that get posted and most of the time it’s more original than that... i guess because fanfic lovers themselves rally so much around Tropes as this big community unifier and bring it up in every conversation about fics, so it’s reasonable for the fanfic haters to respond to that level of worship, but it’s just bizarre to me seeing those conversations where i’m like have i just been reading totally different fanfiction than you guys...

It’s time for….
✨Niche Content With Suzy!✨
I’m so sorry, this is about to be the least relatable thing I’ve ever said, but…
I just saw a Hanahaki fic with the title “Mop Up What Is Left of My Lungs” and I CANNOT BELIEVE that this is the first time I’ve seen that lyric applied to that trope! It works SO insanely well! Like. To the extent that I’m not going to be able to listen to Blossoms the same way anymore lmao

thinking this morning abt a post i saw a while ago which i should have saved bc it had things in it that i disagreed with that i now cannot quote with any accuracy (life tip: save the posts u disagree with bc it means that when u finally figure out WHY u disagree with them you will actually be responding to what was actually there instead of your plato’s allegory of the cave version of it)
anyway
the post in question, iirc, was talking about like........ i think the crux of one of its arguments in support of its point was this idea of fanfiction being somehow unable to draw or explore characters with the same depth as an original work - so you can already see why i disagreed with it in spite of the fact that the main point it was trying to support was one that i DO agree with - which is that the trend of turning your fanfic into Original Fiction Do Not Steal by just “filing the serial numbers off” needs to stop bc it’s a bad way of trying to create original fiction. anyway one of the points the author made in support of their main statement was that true fanfic should be rooted in the love and exploration of the original world and therefore the original work, and so that’s why so many AU fics fall flat
and i just had to stop and pause to reassess how apparently the way this person approaches the very concept of AU fanfics is apparently so diametrically opposed to my own bc i AM The AU Warlock who is only capable of writing really weird niche AUs, and i don’t think i have ever approached any AU without this being my driving mission statement:
Tumblr media
[ image ID: the Parks and Rec “It’s about the cones” meme with the subtitle text changed to read “It’s about the shared narrative themes” ]
ANYWAY i don’t know if i had a point with this post at all, but it really is interesting sometimes to get a glimpse of how some people truly live in an entirely different world to the one you inhabit huh
#what time is it? Time For Fel's Opinions#for real though i. i have never been capable of even coming up with a CONCEPT for a 'normal' au.#the closest i think i've ever come is the as-yet-unwritten Amelie AU concept i came up with for jmart?#but even that came about bc i realised that Amelie is EXACTLY the sort of person you would get if you had a Lonely-Web-Beholding-aligned--#person who somehow managed to remain benevolent.#i have more thoughts that were going thru my head about this but they're too long for tags#and also i'd want to find the original post again first#bc like. i agreed with the 'u cant just make an original work by filing serial numbers off ur fanfic bc then u remove all the actual--#personality of the characters u were writing for' point but like.#look. i'm not saying there aren't some very bland cookie-cutter AU fanfics out there that do not give a whit for characterisation and themes#and instead choose to lean heavily on shallow fanon tropes and stock fanfic genre conventions.#we've all seen it.#but making the statement that all AU fics fall under that banner is a Bold Fucking Claim my guy#like yes ok ok my own jimmies are personally rustled by this bc my entire brand is#'weird niche AUs with a heavy emphasis on exploring the canon themes and characterisation within a different context to the canon universe'#but i've also read a fair amount of AUs that REALLY sink their teeth into studying the characters and themes bc the AU setting allows them#to look at it from angles that canon simply cannot!#ANYWAY
