Gadgets: the way to this girl's heart
Photo by Charlotte May on Pexels.com I am a gadgets girl. I always have been. Kitchen gadgets, bathroom gadgets, knacky gadgets that magically create extra space in a wardrobe. While other people shop for clothes or shoes or bags or sports gear, I find myself gravitating to kitchen accessories shops and hardware stores. Not always to buy, obviously. Because that would be a problem. I’d end up…

📗 📗 📗 #libro #librilettidallamela #librilettidallamela2022 #thed #lizlawler #lizlawlerdontwakeup #dontwakeup #irishauthors #thriller #giallo #irishwriters #bookdragon #bookworm #holidayreading #robaccia (at the D Las Vegas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfjF1d3sdwd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

13th December 2023: Project V and new Delton Waynes
Hope everyone's had a great 2023 so far and is looking forward to Christmas and the holiday season wherever you are.
If you've been following me on Instagram (kenmcgrath_author) you'll see that for the latter part of this year I've been working on something called Project V.
Originally written as a long, long, long short story (or so I told myself so I wouldn't get spooked by the enormity of the work, my Writing Shed were not fooled however but played along – bless their inky hearts) this can now be acknowledged as a novel - the first I have completed. Obviously, I'm very, very proud of this and if nothing ever comes of it then at least I've achieved this much.
Project V is currently out with some beta readers, who I'm hoping will find it entertaining and won't stumble into too many plot holes. It's a sci-fi adventure that I think is faced past and exciting, well that was my intention anyway, but sure we'll see what happens.
As a result of the focus on Project V (and learning to drive, and doing a college course, and, and, and,… it’s been a busy, busy year) I’ve not done much in the way of short story writing but thankfully the year won’t be totally dry. The lovely people at Siren’s Call magazine recently accepted my short ‘Hot Topping’ for publication in their Winter 2023 issue.
I’ve been lucky enough to appear in Siren’s Call before, most recently in their Winter 2022 issue, and it’s great to be returning to their pages again.
‘Hot Topping’ features my recuring character, the exorcist Delton Waynes, as he’s called upon to deal with a haunted pizza oven. Good times.
Delton Waynes has previously appeared in the stories ‘Boo-B-Q’, ‘Should Have Bought Flowers’, ‘Bad Patch’ and ‘Exercising, Exorcising’ which you can find links to via the Stories tab above.
Until next time everyone, thanks for supporting new fiction and stay well.

In Praise of Fenriz
I’m sick, and can do nothing but lay around in bed and wait for this to blow over.
I don’t often wish I had a boyfriend, but right now someone to bring some flash of light to the vast grey plain of this particular moment would be nice. In truth, wish isn’t really the right word, not even now, and nice probably doesn’t really hold up either, as these things are so seldom nice. But you know what I mean, whoever you are, reading this.
Maybe, lying around waiting for the painkillers to take effect, it would be cool to have a man here beside me, though so much has changed that I can no longer even really imagine it. I recently finished watching The Office and man alive, is Jake Lacy a fine looking man. The scene where he takes off his shirt so Erin can wash the mayonnaise out of his hair when everyone gets lice is the closest I’ve come in a long time to that flash of giddiness in my gut. The last guy I went out with was totally unsuitable, and really only good for one aspect of a “relationship”, and ghosted me after two dates, which was both astonishing and hilarious. I can’t really picture what it would be like to have any kind of relationship with a man anymore. Even Jake Lacy as Pete, with his patient kindness and developed biceps isn’t fuel enough to stoke those old flames.
I have no boyfriend, and no male company, so I’m compensating by watching videos of Fenriz explaining the history of Black Metal, some in English, and some in Norwegian. The stop-start cadence of his native tongue is particularly charming.
In the video I’m watching now, Fenriz is about 38, my favourite age for a man. His hair is fabulous, just gorgeous, that enragingly, naturally smooth kind that requires no styling, but simply hangs down his back and shoulders in a soft chevelure. The video is an excerpt from Until The Light Takes Us. He is wearing a long-sleeve band shirt rolled up to his elbows, showing his tattooed forearms. He is the very picture of the Cool Metal Boyfriend I never really had, and still had a weakness for at 26, when I met Gabriel. Gabriel was six foot, blonde and sullen, his neck and pubic bone tattooed, the old ink fading into grey-green, but still, very cool. He was selfish and childish and stupid, and one of only two men I’ve never regretted. Funny.
Anyway, back to Fenriz. In this video, which I have watched many times before tonight, he is the perfect embodiment of what that most troublesome part of me finds irresistible in a man. Distinctly masculine, and not quite suitable, with an edge, something different enough to be exciting, and familiar enough to put the hook of addiction in me. Isn’t it weird that I should be lying here alone, where I have previously lain with various poor choices, looking at videos of a person I will never meet, and thinking that there is something both sad and healthy in not being able to dream narratives like I used to?

Work In Progress: “Cuts & Bruises”
Tumblr media
Personally, I’m still pretty new to Tumblr and my attempts at keeping up a blog. It’s great to see such a strong writing community online, inclusive of Tumblr! I’ve noticed a lot of writers sharing ideas and details about the projects they’re working on and that’s really great and exciting!
However, sharing my work has always made me hesitant out of my somewhat paranoid fear that someone will steal it or be inspired to come up with something much better (call it childhood trauma, l-o-l). Thus, I don’t want to share character breakdowns or several excerpts, at least not as publicly as this. But I will, at the very least, share its pitch (as critiqued by the Book Doctors as part of NaNoWriMo a while ago) and a speculative cover that I’ve drawn up.
From here on, I want to share the journey of “Cuts & Bruises” as it grows from being an idea in my head to a story in your hands.
“I’d imagine my family finding me; would they be surprised? Devastated? Relieved?     Would I survive? Would they find me just at the last second, resuscitating me at the vital moment before I could slip away? I could see their angry faces flashing before my eyes, screaming selfish, selfish, selfish, how selfish can you be?”
Life has become banal and monotonous for 16-year-old Samantha Ward. The blade she drags across her skin is the only thing that makes her feel alive, that makes her feel real.
With the death of her beloved Grandmother and the rejection of her best friend, Samantha falls ever further into the grips of her darkness, every day adding to the collection of marks on her skin.
Desperate and tired of waiting for change, Samantha ventures out into the rain and finds herself drawn to the graveyard nearby. She stumbles across her classmate Michael Gallagher with a noose swaying behind him. Choosing careful words, Samantha convinces him to leave it behind.
With an unspoken bond between them, a friendship blooms. But as Samantha struggles to keep her habit a secret, she realises that Michael is hiding his own secrets too.
CUTS & BRUISES is not a story about a boy saving a girl. It is a story about two people saving each other.
CUTS & BRUISES is The Bell Jar meets John Green; a semi-autobiographical 80,000 word YA novel based largely on my own experiences with depression and self-harm. I’m also an artist, musician, film-maker and trained scriptwriter.
