so, it’s been a while.

2020 taught me a lot of things, as i think it did all of us. one of those - and a big one, which i didn’t realise until tonight - was that i shouldn’t have abandoned this blog.

studyblr is not only a source of motivation (which is something i’ve definitely been lacking since march), it’s also a community, of bright, like-minded people, that push each other to achieve goals, learn new things, and be all-round better people. it’s a fantastic community, and one that i realise now i’ve sorely missed.

i started uni towards the end of last year, as did many other people, and with it being completely online i’ve definitely struggled - and i know i won’t be alone with that either. to try and combat the constant lack of motivation, and the crippling procrastination, and all the rest of the emotions that come as a package deal with studying in a global pandemic, i’ve decided to try and revive this blog - as a studyblr, and perhaps as something more personal too, we’ll have to wait and see.

so yes, i’m back - at least for now, anyway!

Hii, In September I’m going to start at Leiden University and I choose to study International Relations and Organisations Political Science. I was wondering if you have any tips? Like maybe some book recommendations or other helpful tips? Do you maybe know a studyblr that has like a starting Uni masterlist? Thank you!!

Hia! Congratulations on getting accepted to LEIDEN!!! How exciting :) I had a look at what courses you’ll be studying in your first year so I’ve listed some readings that I think will complement your courses in a good way and give you a solid foundation. Most of the things I’ve recommended are philosophical works because I thought that was what the first year courses were lacking. IR theory is based on political philosophy after all so if you become better acquainted with some of the big thinkers you’ll have an easier time later.

Readings:

The Republic, Plato

The Prince, Niccolò Machiavelli

Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes

The Social Contract, Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Second Treatise of Government, John Locke

What is the role of the state?

Why are we as citizens obliged to obey?

What is the state of nature? Aka what is the world like and how do people behave if there is no one to rule over them?

Can these concepts be used on an international scale?

This is a video but whatever, Peter Singer

Are we morally obliged to help others?

Does this extend further than helping them in their own country, such as allowing them to become refugees in our countries?

The United Nations: A Very Short Introduction, Jussi M. Hanhimäki

Can the security council be reformed? Should it be?

If the UN cannot prevent war, is it a failure?

European Union Politics, John McCormick (you don’t have to read this book now, but it is amazing and so easy to understand)

is the EU an organisation, a superstate or perhaps something in between?

Why would any state want to give up part of their sovereignty to be part of the EU?

Is the EU successful? Has it fulfilled its purpose?

Some advice on reading philosophical works:

No one understands anything the first time they read it so it’s okay if you don’t either.

Write down definitions and take it slow! I spent a whole month at uni studying Hobbes so don’t rush it.

Wording is important.

General advice on international relations:

Have fun and take a deep breath once in a while! I love IR and I hope you will/do too :)

There is A LOT to learn so stay on top of your readings.

Make sure that you have good study habits because you will need them.

Stay critical. In political science and international relations there is no truth, only theory. Think for yourself, provide arguments for your reasoning and create your own view of the world.

And I don’t know any uni master posts and I couldn’t find any either so I’ve decided to make one. Hang in there!

Whats IR like? Im interested in possibly studying it in college

hello, very sorry for the late reply! it depends on the majors’ concentration (ex: international political economy, diplomacy, globalization, peace studies, human rights, etc) and because the concentration in my major is transnational crime, i find it very interesting! because there are plenty crimes around the world, even the ones i never think about.

we study the relations between countries in the world, current political/cultural/economic situation around the world, from past conflict to future conflict possibilities, cultures and languages of various countries, etc. and there are waaay more of it. to put it shortly, we are jack of all trades.

it may be tough at times (well, to be honest, it is tough indeed) but once you understand the perks of being an IR student, it won’t matter much. 😉

16.5.2021 // got myself a new laptop! was able to get some funding from the uni to replace it which was such a relief. have just over 24 hours to finish referencing (ew) and write ~300 words. also im having terrible hay fever so that’s just great
