Kikyou is full of love and kindness
Kikyou is a very tragic character. Her character is so complex that it is difficult to understand her, but she can be understood if will look at it differently to. Her character is tragic, deep and beautiful. I think Kikyou is the best written character of Rumiko out of all the Kikyou versions. Kikyou suffered more injustice from Inuyasha's old team from the 2000s. Her personality was completely erased. Her warm and soft side seems to have disappeared, her scenes with Inuyasha are erased or drastically changed, where Kikyou is shown as a truly unpleasant person. In a newer fan version from another artist, she is insulted and written that she is just an "ex girlfriend" This woman didn't deserve this. Kikyou faces injustice from every possible angle.
This post has been in the making for over 2 years. I've been thinking about writing this post for a really long time like you see, but I always put it aside. Now I can finally do it. This post is an analysis of her character. I know that there have been many 'analyses', but this analysis is different and shows a different side. I want to show that Kikyou is not a 'cold bitch'
Tumblr media
The most common accusation against Kikyou and questioning her love is that she "asked Inuyasha to turn into a human. and higurashi accepts him who he's and truly love him"
I answered this question here, so can see it, but I wanted to add something because Kikyou and higurashi are often compared ,She and higurashi come from different backgrounds and times.
They both have different upbringings and both have different and mentality. higurashi is free and can do whatever she wants, no one limits her, she has many friends and she is free to love and hate, and all emotions. No one limits her, no one expects anything from her, she had no care or people's lives in front of her, she didn't have to hide or control her emotions. She wasn't lonely. She could always talk about her problems with her friends, she didn't have a father, but she had a mother who took care of her and her brother, so she didn't have to bear the burden of raising a brother, she didn't have to bear the burden of being alone. Kikyou she wasn't a free human.
Nothing is known about Kikyou and her past, but what can be sure be said, that Kikyou had to mature at a very young age because she had to take care of her younger sister. Kikyou became her parent and sister and she was also under the care of village and people for whom she was a 'great priestess and power', she was responsible for people's lives. Here I will support the anime, it has canonical scenes from the manga, so…. Kikyou and Kaede before shikon no tama traveled together and studied and I think that was Kikyou's only freedom, her feelings and loneliness were less. Everything changed when she got shikon no tama. Kikyou had to face demon attacks wherever she was and save the village and people, her duties became more burdensome. She couldn't show weakness or any other feeling. Kikyou wasn't free to love or hate. She was supposed to be a mass without feelings. She had to suppress all her feelings. She only had a sister and no friends. She couldn't talk to anyone about her worries and concerns, the burden she had to carry. She couldn't kill Inuyasha because she knew how he felt, I understand because she felt the same way. Inuyasha came into her life and was the first and only person Kikyou opened up to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will repeat it, her speech came from the depths of her suffering, wounded, lonely soul and heart. She told the truth. She didn't feel human, even though she was human. She felt that she didn't belong anywhere, all she had to do was take care of the former village and kill demons every day, without any feelings, as if she didn't feel anything. She was human, but she didn't feel like anything. She didn't know where she belonged. Literally like Inuyasha, that's why she could understand him so well. Inuyasha saw this sadness, her eyes, her smile, everything was sad, but I have the impression that if she could, she would cry. But all he has to do is suppress everything. Inuyasha was also despised by humans and demons because he did not belong to any worlds, he was a mixed race despised by both worlds. Kikyou understood this and Inuyasha's feelings perfectly.
Kikyou loved him as a half-demon and had nothing against it, but seeing how people reacted and that when he had a gem nearby and had to keep an eye on it, and he wanted to lead a normal and peaceful life with Inuyasha, the jawel had to disappear. She just wanted a quiet life with her sister and the person she loves. Nothing more. She only asked him, she didn't force it on him. He made the decision himself out of love for her. He wanted to do it for her and live happily with her. This also shows how much Inuyasha loves her too. Kikyou and Inuyasha knew that people looked down on the relationship between a demon and a human. Inuyasha's parents are a good example and they could live together peacefully the jewel must disappear. Kikyou simply thought that if the gem was used with good intentions, it would disappear. She will be free and will be able to live a peaceful life with Inuyasha and her sister.
it's easy to say "I accept you as you are" when you don't know how people look at people and demons, and you come from the free world, with free choice and you think that everything is so simple And your only problem is school and worrying because 'inuyasha went to Kikyou' and she can't have him just for herself. Kikyou bothered her so much because she took Inuyasha away from 'her' who wasn't hers, and she acted as if he only had to look at her. Of course, there is a moment where she understands Kikyou's feelings, but it's only momentary because later she has a problem again that Inuyasha is with Kikyou and she can't stand it. Her understanding is shallow and a shallow approach. An egoist is kagome and egocentric, focused only on herself, her pain, her feelings, and her friends only confirm this.
Inuyasha and Kikyou thought they were betrayed on each other, but even though their anger was visible, they still loved each other. Kikyou, instead of killing him, used an arrow to put him to sleep. She wasn't able to kill him, and she could have done it, but she decided to put him to sleep and chose death because she didn't want to live without him. A love stronger than the anger and excruciating pain Kikyou felt. Kikyou died with a lot of anger owards Inuyasha, Inuyasha also felt betrayed and attacked the desperate higurashi thinking it was Kikyou and despite everything he didn't stop loving her. They both felt angry and hurt by the betrayal, and that's what they thought.
Kikyou came back to life, but did she ask for it? No.
Tumblr media
Urasure, created Kikyou so that she could have a slave and use her power. She thought that Kikyou would be at her service. Kikyou has returned against her will and she is now anxious, angry and hurt!! Inuyasha literally says the same thing in chapter 1, only Inuyasha calmed down and understood that he loved Kikyou, even though he denied it.
When Kikyou attacked Inuyasha, Kikyou received another slap from fate. Well, her younger sister stood against her. This is truly disgusting behavior from Kaede
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't really care at this point that she knew Inuyasha wasn't evil, but what she knew was that they both betrayed each other and even Kaede thought Inuyasha had inflicted that wound on her when Inuyasha denied it, she immediately believed him and tried to stop her sister, knowing that she had the right to be angry. At that moment, Kikyou felt betrayed once again, now by the person closest to her, who she's cared in the past. It's really painful when your sister opposes you and tell to person who thinks he betrayed you, killed you, deceived you to destroy her body Kikyou understands that she can't count on anyone even in her pain and anger. She stood up for a girl I barely know and Inuyasha. and once again she learns that there is no one but himself and her own pain, immediately after waking up. Her sister really made her understand..
It made even me angry, and I still feel disgusted by Kaede. She is an ungrateful brat, which she shows throughout the series. Kaede should apologize to her. Not Kikyou to her. from Kikyou's point of view, very hurtful.
Kikyou tries to kill him a second time. At this point it is known who is behind the betrayal. Inuyasha and Kagome knew about it, but Kikyou didn't yet. Kikyou wanted to go to hell and go with him so that they could be together. Inuyasha didn't mind.
Tumblr media
This means that Kikyou and Inuyasha love each other so much that they can go to hell together, to be together. This is Love. They really love each other. Kikyou, knowing that she did not belong to the living or the dead, tried to live normally in the village as in life. It didn't work, but she tried.
This woman has been rejected from the world and people for the second time, and the only person who understands her and always runs to her is Inuyasha.
Kikyou finds out that it is Onigumo and her goal is to destroy it, which is natural. So he steals the jewel and gives it to Naraku. Not because she helps him, but because she wants to destroy him.
Tumblr media
Her actions may not be understandable, but she is not selfish. She just took it upon herself to kill him. She wanted to do it herself because she doesn't know any other way, only Inuyasha was there for her and supported her, but Kikyou didn't really have time to learn how to rely on others, shared her pain and worries. She acts alone because she knows that she is alone and lonely and is ready to take the risk because the person who destroyed her life and Inuyasha is alive and doing great. She has always been lonely. She doesn't know any other life, only this time she doesn't have her treacherous sister with her. She travels, helps everyone and does everything to bring the murderer to death. this way Kikyou showed that she knows how to destroy Naraku when they couldn't destroy him for almost the entire series. Of course, higurashi finished what Kikyou didn't finish.
Kikyou was the only one who showed concern for Inuyasha's feelings, the only one who took his feelings into account and the only one who truly cared about him.
Tumblr media
She knew his friends would be worried about him. Kikyou thanked him for being with her. Her care and gentleness and gratitude are with her. Kikyou is just happy that he could be close to her even for a moment, but she knew that he also had friends who would worry about him.
Kikyou was the only one who predicted naraku's movements like kagome's eyes. naraku wanted her eyes, what Kikyo had previously predicted and warned inuyasha and helped her and his team giving higurashi an arrow to help her.
Tumblr media
Kikyou helped people and was not afraid to face the attack of her murderer and lose her life in this revenge. Kikyou helped Inuyasha's team, she did a lot more than Kagome, the only thing she can be thanked for is saving Kikyou's life, but she didn't even do it of her own free will, only for Inuyasha. Kikyou predicted Naraku's movements very well and carefully. Kikyou saved Kohaku's life, but also Miroku's by absorbing his curse, which means that Kikyou accepted Naraku's curse into her body, which was really dangerous for her.
Kikyou gave up her revenge for Kohaku saving his life. She chose his life over her revenge and only Kohaku truly loved and respected Kikyou apart from Inuyasha. She had someone with whom she shared the same pain again and he was the same as her. And really, Kikyou appreciated Kohaku and wanted him to live, and she managed to do so. Kikyou always saved others, but she could never save herself. The well-being of others was always the most important, especially people she loved like Inuyasha and Kohaku
Kikyou is the core of everything. It was her soul that wanted to meet Inuyasha, that's why Kagome met Inuyasha and stayed with him. If it weren't for Kikyou's soul, these two wouldn't have met. It was Kikyou who fought and predicted what Naraku would do at an early stage of the story, she knew how to get rid of him, even though she was neither dead nor alive, she helped everyone, always showing goodness and kindness. Her love for Inuyasha, despite the anger and pain she felt at the beginning, has always been there. He loves Inuyasha, always has and always will. Same with Inuyasha. Death could separate them, but despite everything, Inuyasha loved her with all his heart.
Kikyou is an extremely complex and tragic character. Full of pain and loneliness, full of kindness and love. She deserves more love than hate

The sun was rising, steam was coming up through the roof of the hut, the sky was blue, and late into the night fluffy clouds rolled in. The birds were chirping and the bugs were buzzing about. Shippo was outside with Kagome, they were down by the lake earlier that morning collecting water to be boiled for breakfast, they were now outside drawing in the dirt.
Kagome seemed lost in thought, yet she also seemed happy, her keens pressed up against her chest as she watched Shippo draw something in the dirt. The straw-like door was rolled up, letting in natural light into the little home. Inside Miroku, Sango and Kirara were all watching over the food. Sango was watching the rice boil, while Miroku was getting the plates ready for breakfast.
You had been made the main course of the meal at the crack of dawn, fried fish, Shishimi, and some boiled eggs. However, you and Inuyasha were long gone before the group awoken, but you did let Shippo know where you were both going, his ears are more sensitive than the others, so he was awoken from all the noise from you cooking. You told him that you and Inuyasha were going to go for a little stroll, and that when the rice was done that they can all eat as much as they wanted.
That was about 30 minutes ago, Kagome sighed as she looked up and down the path that lead to the hut, before her eyes drifted off towards the trees. “I wonder where they gone off to.” She spoke aloud to herself in wonder. Shippo looked up from his drawing, a curious gleam in his eyes as he looked up at her. “I’m sure they’re fine, Kagome. Inuyasha is pretty strong so they’ll be safe for sure!!” He said in a reassuring voice as he smiled up at her. She stared at the trees a little longer before she looked down at him. “I know, but I can’t help but feel….” She trailed off as she ducked her chin down on top of her knees, a sadden look on her face.
Shippo tilted his head some. “Feel what, Kagome?” Came Miroku’s voice as he and Sango exited the hut. Shippo and Kagome both looked over at them. Kirara, nested in Sango’s arms, meowed and jumped down next to Kagome, she looked up at her before she nuzzled her head against her hip. Kagome smiled down at her, before she gently rubbed her head. Sango observed Kirara for a moment before she looked at Kagome. “Kirara can feel that something is bothering you, care to share?” She asked as she sat down next to Kagome, her keens bent to the side.
Miroku remained standing as he stared down at her with an expectant yet understanding stare. Kagome looked around at everyone before she nervously laughed. “Uh-haha- It’s nothing, really guys. It’s silly honestly.” She said dismissively as she busied herself with petting Kirara’s fur. Sango, Mirkou, and Shippo all shared a look before they all looked back at Kagome. “It’s about Inuyasha and Kikyo, isn’t it?” Sango said, her tone sympathetic. Kagome looked over at her with a shocked worried look before she looked back down at her knees.
“Yeah, it is… I’m just…. I’m worried, that Inuyasha might be thinking about going back to Kikyo. It just feels like everything that we’ve been through means nothing to him, and I’m worried that his mom might...” She trailed off as she bit her lip and her eyes teared up. Sango gave her a sad look, she felt sorry for Kagome, she was so young, and yet she was going through this hardship. Miroku spoke up. “Are you worried that his mother might approve of him being with Kikyo?” He asked, trying to make sense of her emotions. Kagome’s silent nod confirmed it and Sango placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“It’s okay, Kagome, you have no need to worry. I think Inuyasha’s mom likes you plenty, you’ll never know unless you ask right?” She said in a comforting tone. Kagome looked over at her, her face slightly flustered from crying before she flashed her a weak smile. “Right.” She said. Shippo stepped to her, placing his little hand on her shin in comfort before he smiled up at her with confidence. “I think Inuyasha’s mom likes you way more than Kikyo.” He said, they all looked at him with wide eyes. “Oh, how do you figure?” Miroku asked.
Shippo closed his eyes and he puffed his chest. “Because Kagome technically brought Inuyasha back home, he wasn’t anywhere near Kikyo when we first came here, so maybe she figured that you convinced him to come home.” He said in a factual tone. Everyone stared at him in silence, his words soaking in. “You know...’ Sango trailed off. “He kind of has a point.” Miroku finished. Kagome stared at Shippo a little longer, before she beamed a real smile at him. “Thanks, Shippo, you actually helped me. I think you have a point.” She said, Shippo smiled up at her, his tail slightly wagging behind him, happy to have made Kagome feel better.
“It’s no issue, Kagome, I’m always here to help!!” He cheered, Kagome chuckled before she gently ruffled his hair, and he leaned into the touch. “We should eat breakfast now, we don’t want the rice to stick,” Sango suggested. Everyone nodded as they all headed inside to have a warm breakfast. Kagome’s worries were cast away with the wind.
-------------;✩̣̣̣̣̣ͯ┄•͙✧⃝•͙┄✩ͯ•͙͙✧⃝•͙͙✩ͯ┄•͙✧⃝•͙┄✩̣̣̣̣̣ͯ------------------
You and Inuyasha have been walking for about 30 minutes now, Inuyasha has been reminiscing about his childhood. He pointed out the tree he used to play on, he pointed out the flower bed that he helped you plant, and he even pointed out the new path in the woods that was never there before. You explained to him that it was for village men to travel to and fro from Village to village more easier, they kept getting lost so eventually someone made a path. You both walked a talked about pieces and parts of his childhood, it was nice to revisit the fond memories with him.
In your walk, Inuyasha suddenly paused, his eyes trailing up the large tree not too far from him, you stared at the tree for a moment, before a smile crossed your face when you noticed what it was that he was staring at. It was a tree with his claw marks, which he used to mark his territory when he became a young teen, his instincts told him to do so.
He walked up to the tree, the marks came up to his chest, and his eyes sadden, his fingers tracing over the dull markings now. You walked up next to him. “I’ve been gone for a long time, huh Mom.” He said aloud to himself, you didn’t answer, feeling that it wasn’t a question, but a thought.
He scowled and his hand pressed into the tree. “You told me that Sesshomaru came by to visit every few new moons. Why?” He suddenly asked, he didn’t look at you, his eyes staring at the marks but not truly seeing them. A wind passed by, blowing both of your clothes and hair in the wind. “He came for questions.” You answered honestly. He turned his head slightly to you, but he didn’t look at you. “What questions did he come for?” He asked. You stared at him, calmness swarmed you, but you knew that your answer could change the wind.
“He wanted to know more about Tessaiga, and Izayoi.” You answered, the wind picked up and you tensed but you didn’t turn away. His fist clenched, and he turned towards you, but he wasn’t angry, just curious. “I can understand why he’d want to ask questions about the old man’s sword, but why about my mother? And why did he come to you for questions?” He asked, he felt…. Lost and hurt…. That you’d give Sesshomaru answers and not him. Why? He deserved to know. You took in a deep breath and you walked towards him, he watched as you walked past him, sitting down on one of the thick roots of the tree with his claw marks.
“Sit down, Inuysaha.” You gently ordered as you touched the space next to you. He eyed the spot, and he moved to sit down next to you. You both sat in silence for a few seconds before you spoke up. “Sesshomaru wanted to know where to find Tessaiga, but I denied him his request.” You explained. His eyes widen. “Why?” He asked.
You smiled to yourself before you looked at him, your hand gently coming up to caress his face, he leaned into it, and it made your heart swell. “Because, he told me that it was meant for you, Inuyasha, and I refused to break an old friend’s promise.” You said softly. His eyes shined in understanding before he looked confused once more. “Then what about my Mother? Why did he want to know about her?” He asked skeptically. You smiled fondly to yourself before you pulled your hand away from his cheek, and placed it in your lap.
“Because, Sesshomaru knew that Tessaiga and Izayoi were connected.” You explained. His eyes widen and his ears perked up. “Mother had a connection to Tessaiga? But how? Last I checked, Tessaiga is a demon sword.” He said, confusion danced in his eyes as he tried to understand it all. Your smile never left as you looked up towards the leaf-covered sky. The thick branches were full of wide, green leaves.
They covered the sky nearly completely, but the wind blowing made the sky viewable. “Because, Toga told Sesshomaru that he must have someone worth protection.” You explained. Inuyasha remained silent as he listened. You continued. “You see, Toga learned, that in order to use Tessaiga, your heart must be cleansed of all hatred for those who doesn’t deserve your wrath, but your protection.” You explained
Inuyasha’s eyes gleamed. “So, is that why I can use Tessaiga and Sesshomaru can’t? Is it because of Kagome?” He asked, as he paced his hand on Tessaiga’s hilt. You looked away from the sky and over towards him. “No, it’s because you were born without hatred.” You said, your eyes holding many tales from a land that doesn’t exist anymore. He looked over at you. “Born of hatred?” He asked. You nodded your head. “Yes, you see, all demons are born with hatred in their heart for those weaker than themselves. They crave to be the strongest and to rule the lands, but you were born from a human woman, making your heart cleansed at birth.” You explained, hoping he understood.
He looked at you for a moment, his features flickering again from his mother's to his father’s as he thought of your words. “But, then wouldn’t that mean that my father wouldn’t be able to wield Tessaiga?” He asked as he looked down in his lap. You smiled, you figured he’d ask that. “That’s exactly the case, Toga wasn’t able to wield Tessaiga for many moons.” You said, he turned towards you, his eyes gleaming an unfamiliar gleam. “Really?” He asked curiously as he leaned towards you some, he was greatly curious.
You nodded your head, a fond smile on your face as you remembered your younger years. “That’s right, Toga wasn’t always dubbed as “The Great Dog Demon”, he was once your average hound demon, whom was just as clumsy and just as wild as you were.” You said, your voice lively from the sweet memories of a younger Toga. Inuyasha’s face brighten slightly with an amused smile. “Was he really? I just always figured that he was always great… but I guess that everyone has to start somewhere.” He said as he looked up at the sky in wonder.
You giggled a bit before you looked over at him. “Mmhmm, that’s true, every creature must start somewhere, no matter how ‘great’ they were before they passed.” You said in a factual tone. He stared at the sky a little longer, listening to your words, his eyes danced through the leaves, but you could tell that he wanted to ask something. “So? How was he able to…. Ya know… cleanse his heart or whatever?” He asked before he looked at you. Your smile softened and your eyes warmed. “It was because of Sesshomaru.” You said. He lightly gasped at your words. “Because of Sesshomaru? But how?” He asked, he was confused. If Sesshomaru was the cause, then why didn’t Sesshomaru know how to wield Tessaiga?
You looked down at your hands, your left hand cradled in your right, as your thumbs rubbed each other. “Sesshomaru doesn’t understand how to wield Tessaiga, because it was on the day he was born, that Toga learned to wield Tessaiga.” You explained. Inuyasha blinked….. “Huh?” He questioned as he gave you a dumbfounded look.
You looked over at him with an amused grin. “Silly boy…. It was because of Sesshomaru’s birth, that Toga, for the first time ever, truly had something important to protect, a being that was weaker than himself, so fragile and innocent to the world, needed his protection. He told me, “It was like the joyous feeling to ever overcome me. My heart bloomed and my chest felt tight, and Tessaiga, for the first time ever, pulsed.” That was the day he learned, the secret to wield Tessaiga.”
You told him, and he stayed silent for a while, soaking in your words. “So, why didn’t he give Sesshomaru Tessaiga when he was old enough to use it?” He asked. You answered. “It was because Sesshomaru’s heart was shrouded in darkness, he knew, that if he gave Sesshomaru Tessaiga, then it’ll be a blood bath for all creatures lesser than himself. So Toga gave Sesshomaru Tenseiga.” You explained, you almost wanted to laugh when Sesshomaru came to you with a complaint, but there was nothing you could do.
Inuyasha smirked. “Hah! Serves him right, he gave him that useless sword.” He teased, you smiled sweetly before you reached up and snagged on his ear. “OW! OW!! WHAT I DO!? IT’S NOT LIKE I’M WRONG!!” He complained as he howled in pain. You humphed as you pinched his ear a little harder, making his hands hold onto your wrist. “It’s not a useless sword, it can bring back anyone from the dead.
It’s powerful when used correctly.” You schooled as you held his ear. “OKAY, OKAY!! I GET IT, JUST LET ME GO!!” He yelled. You held it a little longer before you let it go. He sat back up straight and he rubbed his ear. ‘Sheesh, fingers of steel.” He lightly complained under his breath. You looked over at him, your ever-sweet smile returning to your face.
“Perhaps we should test these ‘fingers of steel’ on your other ear, hmm?” You asked as you made a pinching motion with your fingers. He flinched back as he covered his ears and he shook his head. You breathed in and out before you looked back up at the sky, you could see a large cloud crossing over. The sun was just now making its way to the 10:00 am mark. “Tenseiga was given to Sesshomaru, so that he could learn to cherish life, and Toga knew the day would come, when he’d resurrect someone from the dead. Someone who he deemed worthy of his protection.” You explained.
Inuyasha had stopped rubbing his ear in favor of listening to you. “Someone worthy of his protection…. Rin.” He said, his eyes widening in realization. You nodded your head. “Yes, the young girl whom he now travels with, she’s fragile enough to be needed of his protection, and I can tell, that she’s wormed her way into his ever demonic heart. He’s highly protective of her.” You explained, a fond smile on your face as you thought of yours and Sesshomaru’s recent meeting.
Inuyasha looked at you in thought, before realization came in. “Wait, how do you even know Sesshomaru? I thought he didn’t like half-breeds and Humans.” He said, his eyebrow arched as he questioned you. You looked over at him with a mischievous yet happy look. “Why I was considered as his favorite caretaker when he was just a boy.” You said. He stared at you for a moment before he looked at you with a face of horror. “You took care of that beast, then you sure did a shitty job at it.” He said as he eyed you. You gave him your ever-sweet smile as your Jaki flared up.
He flinched from your demonic aura and he jumped into a branch on the tree. You took a deep breath before you stood, you stretched your limbs out, stiff from sitting in one position for so long. “Come now, dear son of mine, I have lunch to make and I’m making your favorite, just for you~” You chirped happily as you called up towards him, he stayed in the tree, a fearful look upon his face as he looked down at you. “That would sound nice, if you weren’t oozing out malice.” He said as he could see your ever-loving smile, but the dark aura of promised punishment flared up behind you. You giggled sweetly at his words. “Why you silly boy, I have no idea what you’re talking about.” You said as you lightly fanned him off.
He ducked back further on the branch. “How can she say that with such a kind smile?” He said aloud to himself in fear for his life. He perked up when he noticed that you began to walk back to the hut, you waved behind yourself as you walked. “WELL, I’LL SEE YOU BACK AT HOME THEN!! I’LL BE SURE TO TRY AND LEAVE SOME FOR YOU TOO!!” You said, as you walked away. He stared at you with an annoyed look, before he jumped down from the tree. He placed his hands into his sleeves, prepared to stalk off after you, but he stopped and looked back at the tree.
His old claw marks have dulled throughout the years, and his scent wasn’t as strong as it used to be. He wanted to feel sorry for himself and claim himself to be a bad son for not visiting. Hell, even Sesshomaru visited and she wasn’t even his damn mother. He grunted in irritation before he walked up to the tree, and placed his palm on the claw marks. “A new moon is going to come soon, and when it does, I’ll be the one to talk to you this time.” He said, his eyes holding determination before he sunk his claws into the bark and he made a new mark into the tree with a determined cry. “Sesshomaru!”

Kikyou is a very complex character and difficult to understand. The way Sunrise portrayed her is just plain wrong. They hate her and Kikyou still struggles with hatred, even in the non-canon Yashahime manga. Her character was reduced to just an "ex" and in fact Kikyou was more than just an "ex". She's been dealing with the hate ever since. Anime Kikyou helps her hate. It's easy to hate a character who is so cold, doesn't care and seems to care about something else, just cold because that's how she was supposed to be. Principal Inuyasha didn't hate her, he said he "didn't understand her and should stay dead" He made her cold and emotionless, but that's how she was supposed to be. My criticism of Kikyou in the anime doesn't mean I don't love her. I love her with all my heart, but I don't like what was done to her and how she was presented. She has been changed the most and very drastically. Inuyasha always looks like he doesn't love her but always looks at her compassionately, and she acts like Inuyasha's love doesn't matter anymore. Her scenes with Inuyasha were erased and changed, her personality was changed. I don't care if anyone likes Kikyou in the manga and anime. I express what I feel. Just like Kagome fans keep complaining that 'Kagome was changed' but the changes Kagome had are nothing like what happened to Kikyou. Kikyou, at the end of the episode, was presented as a rival who takes the main character and hurts poor Kagome. This sunrise subconsciously made Kagome feel like the wronged one and she should be pitied, while Kikyou should be hated. Sunrise made it clear that Inuyasha and Kikyou's love is in the past and they no longer love each other, especially Kikyou since she doesn't love him. They make it clear that Kagome is the only right partner for him and InuKik is a thing of the past. Kikyou's true personality has been erased, InuKik's love has been erased. It's Kikyou who needs justice. It was the Kikyou anime that made me love Kikyou so much, the Kikyou manga only strengthened my feelings and my love for InuKik.
Sunrise always favored Kagome . In the manga they didn't kiss, but in the anime Inukag got a kiss. I believe this is the most solid evidence that Sunrise favors Kagome and this ship. Kagome's favoritism and hatred towards Kikyou is very evident in this series and it can really be appreciated by reading the original source - manga.
yashahime continues to hate her. this is just sad. Kikyou didn't deserve this fate.

Why there's actually NO love triangle in Inuyasha (looking at the story from an eastern perspective)
So, this is going to be one of my long posts - bear with me!
I see a lot of debate about Kikyo vs Kagome, and I wanted to share some thoughts on the love triangle aspect of Inuaysha. Although I am white British (originally American), I was raised with an Indian religion – and despite leaving it about 20 years ago, it never fully leaves your system. And I really think you really need to look at Inuyasha from an eastern perspective to understand the Kikyo / Kagome thing.
So, let’s first look at why I personally had such a problem with Kikyo in the beginning – and then we’ll look at why we have to see her in a different way.
Tumblr media
I have two problems with Kikyo. The first is that she was a high priestess of the village, known to be so powerful that she was entrusted to purify the shikon jewel, and so forth. She dealt with demons on a daily basis. She knew better than most that they often took on dual forms and they were deceitful. And yet the instant ‘Inuyasha’ attacked her, she didn’t so much as blink at it. She accepted his betrayal without hesitation – which tells me she never truly trusted or loved him.
Exhibit B – her proposal to use the crystal on him, to make him fully human. Essentially, this would have eradicated the world of one more demon – she was slaying him under the guise of love. It was a means to de-claw him, which to me is symbolic of stripping away all his passion and strength - everything that makes him him. He would have been tamed and weakened and in her hands. It’s pretty realistic, because a lot of women fall for the ‘bad boy’ and then work hard to domesticate him until he is unrecognisable. I just don’t like it.
So, to my mind, Kikyo didn’t really love him. She didn’t accept him for what / who he was. He was fatherless, his mother died when he was young, and he had to look after himself in a cruel world of bullies and bigots. He naively fell for the first suggestion of kindness because it was the first he ever had of it – but it wasn’t sincere.
She sealed him to the Tree of Ages and the world moved on, while he remained frozen in an older time. I see this as metaphor for Inuyasha being emotionally and mentally stuck, unable to move forward from his trauma. This is why (apart from just being a demon) he doesn’t age. Kaede is an old woman and he’s still the young naïve reckless kid in desperate need of love and acceptance, unable to grow.
Tumblr media
But Kikyo never grew either. She died and sealed away the crystal in her grave, freezing the whole moment in time. She still had lessons to learn – they both did. And this is what leads us to Kagome. She is drawn back to Inuyasha because they have unfinished business from a previous lifetime.
When Kikyo is first resurrected, her soul is removed from Kagome’s body and returned to its former body, Kikyo. But this is not how it should be – that soul is ready to move forward. It’s had time to learn lessons. In fact, an interesting question would be: what was that soul doing for nearly 500 years? Because it had to have gone through other incarnations between the feudal period and modern Tokyo. In that time, Inuyasha remained stuck in one moment, unable to grow, while his lover’s soul reincarnated again and again and learned the lessons it needed to learn in order to go back and resolve this matter.
So Kagome drags her soul back into her modern body – but leaves one crucial piece behind in Kikyo’s resurrected body: her hatred / anger. Kikyo is then a walking body of rage. Symbolically, we are seeing the soul (now in Kagome) leaving the past in the past and wishing to move forward, without the anger it held onto for so long. The anger then gradually becomes purified, we could say, through the infusion of other dead souls mixed in to keep Kikyo’s body alive a while longer. She gains the experience of other souls, to heal that anger so that it no longer lingers in the world.
However, as long as Kikyo is present, Inuyasha cannot move forward. It isn't so much about her as an individual - because we have to remember she's already there as Kagome. Kikyo's presence is a symbol of the guilt and anger Inuyasha needs to let go of. He is still emotionally stuck to the tree.
Kagome has had other incarnations to teach her the wisdom of letting go of those emotions. Her special innate skill seems to be healing – as Kikyo, she was a healer, but now she is even more so. The very birds flock to her. She is also a seer. She sees not just the shikon shards but into people’s hearts. She can read the emotions in their faces. She sees their vulnerability, and their worth, underneath all their bravado and anger. Her kindness touches people. She might struggle with algebra, but she has innate wisdom from lifetimes of experience. She is an old soul. In many ways, although Inuyasha is 200 years old, she is at least 500 and therefore older, despite appearing younger. This works in a way that ‘Twilight’ never did, because of the reincarnation angle.
Tumblr media
Kagome is patient – she’s been patient for 500 years, after all – and continues to be there, waiting for Inuyasha to let go of the past, symbolised by the phantom of Kikyo.
This is not really a love triangle – Kikyo and Kagome are the same person. Kagome learns to realise this. At one point, she finds herself in Kikyo's memories of the day she was killed, and Kagome even yells at Kikyo something to the effect of, 'That's not him! He would never do that! Why can't you see it!?' This is her remembering her own past life and reflecting on how blind she once was. But not anymore - she has learned, and she is a seer.
Kikyo is not a threat. She is a figment of the past, and both Inuyasha and Kagome need to let that past go. This is symbolised when Kagome is tested and held over the cliff by a fake Kikyo, and Kagome has to let go of her hand and declares that she doesn’t need to worry about her – she is enough in herself.
Inuyasha finally comes to see that it’s time to move forward. This is him overcoming trauma, pain and anger. He doesn't simply move on with Kagome once Kikyo dies for good - this is him releasing himself from the past and moving forward with the same lover, but in her older, wiser form. This is the moment that the anger dies. All that matters about Kikyo lives on as Kagome. He isn't choosing one over the other, because there is only one woman.
By the end, when Inuyasha has faced his demons (Naraku and more), he is a whole person and finally able to embrace true love. Kagome, as well, in all these incarnations has learned to accept and love for real. She doesn’t want to de-claw him anymore. She never wants him to go full human, but also doesn’t want him to go full demon – because it is vital that we find balance between our animal and civilized sides. It’s a Buddhist notion, this treading the middle path. Inuyasha is the ‘perfect man’ (I mean that as the western magical term), in the sense that he is equal parts beast and human / instinct and intellect. Neither aspect overwhelms the other – and Kagome is the one who teaches him how to walk this path and be whole.
Kagome gives Inuyasha the acceptance he needs to love himself and therefore love her and see love in others. At the end, when he declares to the demons in the crystal that he was born to meet her and she was born to meet him, he doesn’t just mean as Kagome – he means first as Kikyo and now as Kagome. Their karma is entangled. They have been on this path for 50 years (for him) / 500 years (for her). They share a thread of fate. However, it wasn’t their time, 50 years ago. Neither of them was in the right mental place for it to work, yet. And so it was all put on pause, allowing her time to grow, learn, and come back and teach him what she learned along the way, through all those lifetimes of experience, so that they could both grow together and finally be together. I even like to think that now he might begin to age, because he is no longer emotionally stuck to that tree.
When Kagome’s mother so quickly accepts that it’s time for Kagome to leave forever, this is such an eastern viewpoint, as well. Growing up on the location of a shrine, she clearly understands that this is not really her daughter – this is an old soul who incarnated as her daughter in this particular lifetime, and it is now her time to go back and do what she was born to do. She doesn’t belong to her mother. She was on loan, so to speak.
The ending reminded me so much of a novel I’ve read a few times called 'Mipam' by a Tibetan lama named Lama Yongden. It’s quite an interesting story, again about a romantic couple and their fate throughout incarnations.
So Kikyo is bothersome – but it’s because she is the immature form of Kagome before the benefit of 500 years’ worth of lives / experience. As a soul, she learned love along the way, to the point of becoming someone who can love nearly anyone and anything. Kagome forgives so much – including Sesshomaru and Kouga, who are rather abominable, if you think about their beginnings in the story. I see Kagome as a bodhisattva (another Buddhist concept), choosing to incarnate even when she no longer has to, in order to pass on her wisdom to others and teach everyone the path of love. And in true bodhisattva fashion, she isn’t really aware of it during this lifetime – she is humility.
So there you have it – a love triangle…but between two people! Inuyasha never chose one woman over the other, because they are the same - you can’t have Kagome without Kikyo. Kikyo struggles with it because she knows that part of herself will be gone forever (the anger). Kagome struggles with it because anger is hard to release, and yet she just wants it gone already! But they are not distinct characters, if seen from an eastern philosophical perspective - which we have to do, because the foundation of the story is that Kagome is Kikyo’s reincarnation.
That perspective is essential to understanding what’s happening, who they both are, and the ending / the path everyone takes. Inuyasha has that revelation by the end and accepts that she will return to him because they have been on this path for so long, and been separated before – by death, no less – and she still came back to him.
And when Kagome dies, I can only imagine he will wait for her to return to him in some other form, or he will die too and join her somewhere - because they were not simply born for each other as Inuyasha and Kagome but as their two souls underneath those physical forms.
