THE IRREVERANT BLACK SHEEP OF A GOLDEN KINGDOM built by the hands of wondrous gods and their forefathers before them. They were doomed from the start: a frost giant away from the cold and a warrior trapped in the robes of a lady that wants nothing to do with waiting. Together they’re something close to belonging somewhere, anywhere, even if it isn’t necessarily within the confines of these ancient walls. When Loki speaks to her, she clutches onto every word; perhaps not loudly, but she has always felt a pull to listen to him. 

Perhaps it’s because he’s never looked at her like a wilting flower, but more so the thorns that make up the stem -- nonetheless precious, but still dangerous to underestimate. Echo has never once seen Loki as beneath his impossible brother, or anything less than a king on his own right.

They are destined to fail, that much is true. The lady in waiting has experienced so many obstacles despite her advantages, fighting tooth and nail for a seat at the table where there are no seats left. Yet her friend speaks in the midst of her own sorrow and she cannot find a reason to dispute it. The young Asgardian stares with sympathetic blue eyes, half-wishing he would not be so kind to her. It is easier to hold onto sadness with white-knuckled fists than to share it within the way he holds her hands between his own.

"I like you more when you’ve readied a trick all in the effort to anger me,” she admits with a breathy laugh, turning their hands over as her chin ducks with modesty from honesty. 

Dissolving with the heaviness that clings to the air around them, Echo allows a moment -- just one moment -- to say what she means without the worry of repercussion. “...I promised you once when we were small to follow you anywhere, your highness. I still hold that promise now, no matter if we’ve won or lost.” She tests the words on her tongue before she speaks, flickering her gaze back to him. “As far as I am concerned, you found me. I already won.”

Night-bloomed and no longer sick in her own weary, she feels more alive now than she did in this morning, but it’s the kiss to the back of her hand that has her feeling sun burned. The apples of her cheeks flush primrose and the smile the grows on her lips is just as warm as her extended appendage. She appreciates the gesture, at the very least. And watches every second of it.

“Well,” She begins, “You certainly have my attention.” He already did. But there’s something special in her choice to point it out. He’s very different than anyone’s she’s ever met. Sylvie swallowed hard, shifting uncomfortably and crossing her arms in front of her. She took a deep breath, looked everywhere but at Loki, and then finally said, “Look, do you think that was easy for me to say? I messed up. I get it. I should have listened to you and we’d not be in this mess. Now, are you going to help me out here or not?”

Apologising had never come naturally to her, so naturally, she’d really never done it. It hadn’t ever mattered, not when the person who she really owed an apology would be gone when an apocalypse hit. Unfortunately, that left her woefully unprepared for apologising to someone whose opinion did matter, and whose opinion she did- though she was loathe to admit it- care about. She just had to hope it was enough, and that Loki wouldn’t abandon her to this now. She didn’t believe he would, but if he did... wouldn’t she deserve it?

THERE IS NOTHING SHE CAN SAY that won't jeopardize setting off his already withering ego, but she sits across the living room of this safehouse regardless and watches him crawl through the mental motions of what he's returned with: intel pointing to the potential path of winning this self-proclaimed war against her poisoned colleagues. If she's to be corrected in her calculations, then Loki has gone forth on his own accord to bring her this peace; why?

What he's done isn't for her, but her deeply personal attachment to this mission makes it almost feel like it was.

"You did more than anyone else would have." It isn't a brush to his confidence. It's the truth. Lay low and disappear were the only orders offered to the few remaining SHIELD agents with lives destroyed by the virus of Hydra. Teaming up with the god of mischief had never been in the cards, but neither was what remains of her life. She reckons risking his life to gather the intel needed to push this mission forward had never quite been on his radar, either.

Setting her laptop to the floor, Echo draws her knees up and hooks her arms around them with a gentle sigh. "...thank you, Loki. I mean it."
