Hi! Absolutely love your school quiz (I got Life btw which is me to an absolute tee) and I just wanted to know if you'd consider publishing all the results since I'm a curious bean and want to know what the other school results are 😅
(link to quiz) (i recommend others take the quiz because this has spoilers for the answers)
hello anon,
I figured out how to log back into Uquiz because of this ask.
and hooo boy. some stats. first off: I made the quiz 2 years ago. god, i was 19. innocent, a darling, a babe in the woods. uncancelled, free.
Grand Total of quiz takers: 1,326! buncha nerds! many of them are myth wizards, apparently!
Tumblr media
Now here are your Answers for the Quiz!
STORM:
“That which can be imagined, can be achieved.”- School Motto, Wizard101
Storm wizards, known as Diviners, are creative and strong willed, though easily distracted at times. They have a tendency to be dramatic, but that makes them even more fun as companions. They are electric, and powerful, and wonderful people. They are diverse in their interests, but all follow the same motto of achievement, of having a concrete object to show their progress as wizards.
ICE:
“… with Persistence, Victory is assured.”- School Motto, Wizard101
Ice wizards, also known as thaumaturges, are intelligent. They can become perfectionists, and can be almost too self sacrificial in their role. They can be unyielding, not changing their ways in this deep need to be right. Their closed off and curt nature leads to an isolation. To melt the walls around an ice wizard's heart, to be let in to those deep emotions and memories, is something rare and to be cherished.
FIRE:
“If the Mind is like a candle, the Heart is like the sun.”- School Motto, Wizard101
Fire wizards, or Pyromancers, are passionate and wild, impulsive. They rush in on instinct as opposed to what logic would dictate. They are, down to their core, good. They are trying their best, even if it means they burn out. Their passion can manifest in a number of ways, many detrimental, but having a network of friends to anchor them can lead to a very powerful leader.
DEATH:
“Timor mortis conturbat me.” (The Fear of Death Confounds Me)- School Motto, Wizard101
Death wizards (necromancers), are morbid and fond of dark humor, as long as it doesn't make light of the tragedy of their school. They have a hard time connecting with other schools of wizards, because of their personality, but also the fundamental understanding of the Spiral that they cannot share.
MYTH:
“To control the Future, one must look to the Past.”-School Motto, Wizard101
Myth wizards, Conjurers, are very control driven. They are imaginative and have a deep investment in history, whether mythological or human, and they try to learn from the past as best they can, because the cyclical nature of time vexes them the most of any school. They can also have visions of the past, present, and future, through many different mediums, but most of all through dreams.
LIFE:
"As we have been Created, so must we Create."-School Motto, Wizard101
Life wizards, Theurgists, are kind people. Their magic derives from the body, keeping themself and others whole. They can be almost parental at times in their protectiveness, though they tend to feel helpless in the face of grave danger, only able to pick up the pieces and heal afterwards. When only around other life wizards, they can become vicious and competitive in their usefulness, a secret hierarchy few outsiders know of.
BALANCE:
“Eye of Newt, and Toe of Frog, Wool of Bat, and Tongue of Dog.”- School Motto, Wizard101
Balance Wizards, Sorcerers, do not draw upon magic in the traditional sense of the other six main schools of Ravenwood. There is no internal or external draw, but from the magic itself, the elements of each school understood in such ways that they may become one whole. The most flexible of the schools, they meditate and try to understand many things other take for granted. This may lead to an almost condescending view of other wizards at times, for they are never willing to understand the balance of the Spiral.
STAR:
“Your path is illuminated by the light Yet darkness lets the stars shine bright.” ~J.L.W. Brooks (School Motto)
Star wizards specialize in auras, enhancing their own magic in order to more effectively defeat their foe. While an accessory school in game, it is believed that they are prone to distraction, fond of glitter, and rather giggly at times. They can be vicious, can fight as well as the next wizard. They will fight until the end, until the last star dies out, and even they will not know when that is, and they will not stop.
SUN:
“The strength of the Sun will show our inherent capacity for truth and transformation.”-School Motto, Wizard101
Sun Wizards are primarily leaders, an excellent figurehead and rallying point for others. Their magic is used to enhance their spells in battle, enchanting or mutating the inherent magic in the spell cards for just one encounter. These wizards do not crumble under pressure as others may, they are strong and inherently hold onto that strength in order to guide and pull their allies through to the other side of a difficult situation.
MOON:
“The moon is a transformation that shows where change is necessary.”-School Motto, Wizard101
Moon Wizards use their magic to polymorph into other creatures or beings, changing their spell deck and statistics mid-battle. They must have a strong sense of self and grasp upon their own identity in order to continue to utilize these magics and remain who they were originally when they polymorph back. They have so many secrets they fear sharing, but when they do it is the ultimate form of their trust, and they bond with friends for life.
SHADOW:
"It is unstable and difficult to control." Wizard101.com on Shadow magic.
Shadow wizards are few and far between. The backlash the magic inflicts upon its wizards is difficult and painful, but a fair way to rebalance the Spiral after using this reality bending, strange magic. Shadow wizards are capable of great things, but in that greatness, there is no indication whether it shall be for the good or the harm of the worlds and peoples of the Spiral.

Cedric elbowed you in the ribs when you started to fall asleep at the Sorting Hat’s song. It was different from last year, almost like a lullaby. Now that this was your second year at Hogwarts, you understood how the others felt. Watching the first years was both exciting yet miserable at the same time. Your stomach was going to start growling at any minute. Not many were sorted into Hufflepuff. There were a few students left to go but you quickly noticed that Ravenclaw and Slytherin were taking most of this year’s batch of first years. Finally, your favorite part happened— the feast. You half listened to Dumbledore talk and introduce the new teacher for Defense Against the Dark Arts.
If it wasn’t your Uncle Remus, you didn’t care. The new professor— Alastor Moody— did not seem like a very friendly man. You stopped when you looked up though. Somewhere at home, you were sure there was a picture of him with your father and a bunch of other people. Your ears actually pricked up when Dumbledore announced there was no Quidditch Cup that year. Teams were still free to schedule practices on the pitch but there were no games scheduled for the entire school year. The Headmaster let the students scream and protest for a minute before silencing everyone.
“We have no Quidditch this season because it is with great pride that I announce Hogwarts has been selected as the host for the Triwizard Tournament.”
You turned to Cedric. “Triwizard Tournament?”
“Happens every five years. Was discontinued for a bit because some kids died, I guess it’s back.”
Dumbledore cleared his throat. “Of course, Hogwarts will do our best to keep up the prestige of this competition. As a competition between the three largest schools in Europe, our reputation of being a good school must be upheld. Students, I am trusting you on this. I would like to introduce our fellow competitors who will be joining us in October, Durmstrang and Beauxbatons.”
The uproar that had quieted became a protest once again. Barty Crouch— your new nemesis— came out to inform everyone of the rules. He uncovered a large goblet emitting a blue flame. The kids had the entire month of September and almost all of October to decide if they wanted to enter or not. After Beauxbatons and Durmstrang arrived, names would have to be submitted starting that weekend— from Saturday to Saturday. The last day to put your name in the goblet of fire was October 29th. After that, the goblet would marinate over the names and spit them out at the Halloween feast. The games began almost right away afterwards and the winner got one thousand galleons while their school got two thousand.
The uproar started because of a new rule. Only seventeen year olds were allowed to enter. They had worked to improve the games, nothing that could— should— kill a student. But danger was always going to be there and the International Wizarding Community only felt comfortable reinstating the competition if there was an age limit. Those in their last year of schooling— and any seventeen year olds that might have been in sixth year— were allowed to enter. Everyone else could only watch.
You didn’t care much but you could see Fred and George protesting at the Gryffindor table. They technically would fit the description of seventeen year olds in sixth year, if it wasn’t for the fact that their seventeenth birthdays were after the deadline to put names in. You didn’t see the appeal of a game that had that chance of death, no matter how minute they claimed that chance was. You tilted your head up to look at Cedric.
“You’re not going to enter this stupid thing are you?”
He looked down at you, resting his chin on your forehead. “It seems fun. Plus, they cancelled Quidditch. Why?”
“I just don’t like the competition, you said people died.”
“Well, Crouch ju—”
“I don’t trust anything out of that man’s mouth.”
Cedric chuckled. “Alright, well, the other adults just said it’s been made safer… I probably won’t get picked anyway.”
You huffed but let it go. Everyone was dismissed. Despite the tournament being about friendly competition, both Beauxbatons and Durmstrang informed Hogwarts that the only accommodation they would be needing was classroom space for their teachers to teach the visiting students. When it came to sleeping, they opted to sleep on the enchanted ship that Durmstrang was coming in and the enchanted carriage that Beauxbatons would be arriving on. Beauxbatons’ carriage was going to be parked near Hagrid’s hut. The carriage being there bothered you more than the ship just being a nuisance. It would feel awkward to try and visit Hagrid after hours with the rest of the Golden Quartet.
With Cedric now the head prefect, being in seventh year, you watched him lead the entire pack of Hufflepuffs along with the seventh year girl’s prefect— Charlotte. They demonstrated the famous non-password password of Hufflepuff and gave the speech you remembered last year. All the other students had gone straight up to their dorms but you stayed with all the first years to support the prefects. That and you were once again in the prefect hall. You probably wouldn’t have minded except for the fact that it was a last minute change.
Ever since the Dark Mark appeared at the Quidditch World Cup, Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Professor Sprout adamantly refused to let you room with others. They became worried for your safety as a squib. You tried to argue that none of the Hogwarts students bullied you to the point where you thought they actually meant harm— it was usually just taunting. They wouldn’t hear it.
At first, you thought that it was because they were worried about another Sirius type of break-in only with a wizard that actually meant to do evil. You realized after tonight that it was because of the visiting students and their teachers who none of you knew well. Especially the Durmstrang teachers. They were known for teaching Dark Arts rather than Defense Against the Dark Arts— claiming it was the same class with just a different name. The main worry for Professor Sprout was Durmstrang’s headmaster, Igor Karakoff, a former Death Eater.
Your father voiced the same concern and relief in his letter that had been dropped off the next morning. To no one’s surprise, you were eating breakfast at the Gryffindor table with the rest of your friends. You watched Hedwig fly past you and drop off two letters to Harry.
“It’s from your dad and Professor Lupin.”
You smiled as you gave Hedwig an apple chunk for her service since the Great Hall didn’t exactly have insects or mice on the dinner tables. You already knew the letters were coming. Your father and godfather said that whenever they wrote you a letter they would send one to Harry too. They felt bad that he didn’t have anyone and the Dursleys seemed determined to keep it that way. Harry read both of them with joy before setting them down to eat. Cedric walked past the table, handing you your schedule.
“You could sit with your House at least on the first official day of school,” he joked.
You took your schedule with a thank you and began to compare it to everyone else’s. You were all taking different electives so the schedules were the same like they were last year. There were still a good bit of classes shared but it wasn’t the same. Ron took a spoonful of cereal.
“It’s like they’re trying to separate us, it’s a set up.”
“I don’t think anyone is out to get us, Ronald,” Hermione said. “But I do wish we all had the exact same schedule.”
“I’m surprised you’re not taking every class again.”
Hermione snorted. “The Ministry took my time turner after seeing it in (Y/N)’s memory at the trial… besides, every class was a bit much, wasn’t it?”
You all nodded and she laughed. Hermione looked at the schedules with a bit of scrutiny.
“Well here’s why they’re different. (Y/N)’s taking Potions and Herbology with the seventh years!”
“Wait, what?” Harry and Ron pulled your schedule out of Hermione’s hands.
“Yeah.” you shrugged. “Took O.W.L.s over the summer for them.”
“How, though? This isn’t just seventh year, it’s advanced stuff.”
“You guys do know that I’m only good at very few subjects here. Potions and Herbology are kind of my thing. Both Professor Sprout and Professor Snape recommended that I move up. Be happy I didn’t take Care of Magical Creatures with the seventh years, Hagrid offered to let me.”
“No, this is brilliant,” Ron said. “They cancelled exams for the tournament and you’re about to finish Potions and Herbology. You’re good for the rest of your time here. You should tell Hagrid to move you up.”
You laughed and took back your schedule. “I’m pretty sure I’ll have to do some sort of independent study but I’ll consider the idea, Ron.”
The Golden Quartet’s shock and initial disbelief was mimicked by the seventh years when you walked into the Potions classroom. You handed Snape a letter from Hagrid, breathing heavy.
“Sorry I’m late Professor… Wednesday… only day we don’t have Potions before… Care of Magic… Hagrid took us… woods… really deep in… he forgot that I was… ran all the—”
“Take a seat, Ms. Black. I’ll make a note for future reference and try to have Hagrid let you go early.”
“Yes, sir.”
You sat next to Cedric who rubbed at his eyes to confirm that you were actually there. You weren’t going to give an explanation but Snape took the opportunity to tell all his students that they now had a standard to live up to. He pulled out a large container that was holding the felix felicis that you created last year. Immediately, everybody stopped questioning why you were there.
While Potions was enjoyable, Defense Against the Dark Arts wasn’t nearly as much. It was one of the classes you shared with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. You were excited that it wasn’t until Friday you had your first class. When it finally arrived, you wished that Friday had at least three more days in front of it. Professor Moody immediately called you out very loudly as the squib, making everyone laugh at you. It only became worse when he first asked if it was something he said and then declared that he won’t make you try anything.
“Know you can’t even defend a flea from a rat, don’t worry, Dumbledore’s already told me. Just sit and watch.”
You buried your head in your hands, utterly embarrassed. Your head stayed in your hands for most of the lesson. It wasn’t that important to you anyway— it was all about Unforgivable Curses. From what you could hear going on in the class, Moody seemed to be a very hands on teacher. You could hear him making a spider dance across the room with the Imperius Curse. You could also hear Ron’s screams— you assumed the spider was probably on the desk you two were sitting at which was too close to him for his own comfort. You did look up after hearing the Cruciatus Curse and Hermione screaming for the Professor to stop.
Neville looked like he’d seen a ghost. You shot up from your seat and grabbed his shoulders, leading him out of the classroom. You could hear Moody apologizing— having forgotten that Neville’s parents were put into the hospital by Bellatrix Lestrange performing that exact curse. You only returned briefly to grab you and Neville’s stuff and glare at Professor Moody.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen her that mad before,” Ron whispered. “I never want to be on that side of her, ever.”
Harry nodded as he watched you stomp out of the classroom. You led Neville to the Great Lake. He rolled up his pants legs and you both took off your shoes and socks. The water was almost freezing as you dipped your feet in. Digging through your bag, you produced two clementines and two chocolate bars from Honeydukes.
“That was wrong of him. He shouldn’t be teaching here if he’s going to be that reckless! I’m going to tell Professor Dumbledore. It’s ridiculous!” You complained. “Are you okay, Neville?”
He nodded. “Just a bit shaken… I’m supposed to go visit them soon, my parents.”
“If you need someone to go with you, just let me know.”
“Will do. Thank you, (Y/N).”
“Of course.”
“I think class is over,” Neville said. “I think we might’ve missed part of dinner too.”
“Well then, let’s go.”
Neville used a spell to dry off your feet and you guys put your socks and shoes back on. The rest of the Gryffindors in class comforted Neville when he sat down at his table. Cedric looked absolutely appalled when you told him why you came in late. He offered to talk to Dumbledore in your place, being both a prefect and just older than you. Moody called both you and Neville up to the faculty table. The rest of the teachers found out then and there what happened— much to the disgusted shock of some of them. While not happy, you were satisfied at the apology to Neville. He seemed to accept it as he told Professor Moody that he just wasn’t expecting such a hands-on teaching method. Moody turned to you.
“And you, Ms. Black, thank you for being such a loyal friend to Mr. Longbottom.”
You shrugged. “I’m a Hufflepuuf, it’s just what we do.”
The faculty all laughed at your statement, Professor Sprout giving you a thumbs up. Dumbledore chuckled before pointing at your uniform.
“What is that, spew? Is something you students say nowadays?”
You looked down at the button that you had pinned on your sweater vest for the better part of the day.
“Oh, no, Professor. It’s Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare. Hermione started it. Technically, it’s S-P-E-W. She already yelled our head off more than once about saying spew.”
“Elfish Welfare?” Professor McGonagall voiced the question they were all thinking.
“Hermione’s kind of gone on a campaign to save the house-elves.”
“And how many students are with her on spe— S-P-E-W?”
“Um, right now? Me, Ron, Fred, George, Ginny, Harry, Neville, Cedric and the other Hufflepuff prefects, and Draco.”
“Mr. Malfoy?”
“I forced him. Hermione made me Recruiter. She thinks if people see that she’s not trying to get rid of house-elves working for wizard families that they’ll want to join. I’m supposed to remind everyone of how Kreacher still works for our family. I agree, honestly, there’s nothing wrong with giving them proper clothes and a wage. It doesn’t have to be big, they probably won’t even take it— Merlin knows that Kreacher doesn’t. And if he does, he just spends it on our groceries. I don’t know how she’s going to go about fighting for house-elves to have wands, it’s not like they need them, I don’t know. I’m trying to convince her to drop that point. Bless her, still halfway in the muggle world she is.”
“Well,” Professor McGonagall said. “I would like a S.P.E.W. button for support.”
“It’ll be two sickles. Money’s going to make leaflets.”
“That seems a fair price.”
A bunch of other teachers voiced their agreement in wanting a button— including Professor Snape much to your surprise. You agreed to get the buttons to them as quickly as possible before skipping towards the Gryffindor table, not caring about the looks from the other Hogwarts students. Hermione’s excitement was so much that she jumped out of her seat to give you a high-five.
You all started to walk out of the Great Hall, done with dinner. The others went to their common room but Harry walked you to yours. You stood in front of the barrels, making sure not lean your back one, as Harry talked to you.
“Sirius wrote me something else when I said my scar was hurting. He’s heard strange rumors from all over and says if Dumbledore brought Moody here that it’s because he thinks something is going on too. He said Dumbledore is watching the signs.”
“Signs?” you repeated, questioningly. “Well, if your scar hurts again, you should go straight to Dumbledore.”
“Your dad said the same thing.”
“That definitely means to do it then.”
“I will, promise.”
“Good… goodnight, Harry.”
“Yeah, goodnight.” He reached over your shoulder to knock on the third barrel from the left before pausing. “Hey, how come I’ve never been in your common room but you’ve been to Gryffindor?”
You giggled. “No one’s ever been in the Puff common room.”
“No one?”
“No one, not since… well, it’ll be a thousand years next year? So not since 996, I think. You’ve got to be a Hufflepuff to get in.”
“That’s basically since Hogwarts’ founding. But you guys go to everyone else’s?”
“Of course, it’s because we actually try to make cross House friendships. Not our fault you all invite us.”
Harry scoffed. “You’re actually worse than Slytherin, you know. Why did you even let me know the password if I can’t come in? I thought Hufflepuffs were the nice house.”
“We value fairness, hard-work, loyalty, patience, modesty, and being just. Nothing about nice.”
“Isn’t being just the same as being nice.”
You shrugged. “We are just, it’s just our prerogative that non-Hufflepuffs aren’t allowed.”
“Please?”
“Harry Potter, the only way I’m letting you in this common room is when I can produce a patronus charm.”
His hopeful smile dropped. “So, never?”
“Never.”
Harry rolled his eyes and said another goodnight. He watched you walk through the barrels before they rolled back to cover up the entrance. Padfoot meowed at you when you entered your room laughing as if he wanted to know the joke as well. For the next few weeks, you were greeted by Harry knocking on the Hufflepuff common room barrel every single morning. Cedric, who you shared Potions class with first thing in the morning three times a week, was very confused on Friday when he noticed it wasn’t happening a few times but seemed to be a legitimate pattern. You laughed.
“Never getting in, Potter.”
“I’ll wear you down eventually,” he said.
Cedric finally understood as Harry began to walk on the other side of you. The older boy laughed because he remembered when his friends tried to do the same thing. Delta lasted the longest— asking every day for two months straight, she didn’t even take breaks on the weekend. You grabbed both Harry and Cedric’s hand.
“You’re not seeing the common room, but I do have to say I like having you both walk me to class.”
“You do?” Cedric asked.
“Mmm hmm. It’s like I’m the beautiful princess… and you two are my decent bodyguards.”
At the same, both boys practically threw your hands out of their grips. Cedric pursed his lips.
“Decent bodyguards?”
“Well in this scenario I am the princess. You both aren’t allowed to outshine me.”
“Okay still though, decent?”
“Cedric, you are still handsome if that’s what you are complaining about… just too old for me now, Mister Seventh Year, so yes. Decent.”
“Do I even want to know about me?” Harry asked.
“You’re handsome, Harry, you just need a haircut.”
“Everyone’s wearing it,” he defended.
“Yes, and you all need haircuts. Except maybe Neville… maybe. Now, give me your hands and don’t let go this time.”
You grinned when they actually did as you said.
“You’re spending too much time with your father,” Cedric said. “I don’t ever remember seeing you strut through the halls like this at all last year— kind of the same walk you have, Harry.”
Harry rolled his eyes, remembering an unpleasant encounter with Snape last year. “Well my dad didn’t strut around Hogwarts, I don’t think I do either.”
You giggled. “Well, my father very much did strut and I intend to do the same.”
And strut you did, all the way to the Potions classroom. You weren’t expecting Harry to be outside the class again when Potions finished. Cedric gave you a side smile and a wink after walking past Harry to get to his next class— you would have to ask him about that later.
“Where’s our other half?” you asked.
“Hermione had Magical Theory on the fourth floor, Ron’s Ghoul Studies is on the fifth floor. They’ll meet us in the classroom.”
You and Harry held hands as you raised an eyebrow. “Ron is taking Ghoul Studies?”
“It was either that or Arithmancy, Dean turned his form literally thirty minutes earlier and got the last spot in Muggle Studies.”
“Sucks. At least he’s not doing Alchemy, that class is so draining. Potions, Muggle Studies, and Transfiguration all in one!” You complained.
“You’re taking Alchemy? That’s NEWT level! Only eight students are allowed to take it in both sixth and seventh year combined.”
“Nine, now. Turns out when you take Herbology and Potions for seventh years, all of your favorite classes are no longer at a time where you can take them. Snape said I’m already on NEWT levels with Potions, advocated to let me try. McGonagall was worried about the Transfiguration parts… I still can’t turn a match into a needle.”
“Who even teaches that class?”
“Nicolas Flamel.”
Harry looked at you as you guys waited for the staircase to finish moving. You never understand why Hogwarts felt the need to enchant their stairs. It just made it frustrating for literally every student— not a single person that talked to you ever mentioned liking it.
“What?”
“Well, he oversees it. Only comes on Fridays cause he teaches at Beauxbatons. Snape’s on Monday, Professor Burbage on Tuesday, McGonagall on Wednesday. It’s funny, McGonagall was worried for nothing, so far Professor Flamel doesn’t seem to care much that I’m a squib. He says there have only been eight wizards that earned the true title of alchemist. Only two came after him and only was his student. Even at the schools that have it in their core curriculum. Only eight wizards around the entire world have earned the title, he says me a squib won’t change anything when basically everyone fails. You know, I really like him as a professor.”
“Nicolas Flamel is your professor?” Harry asked again.
“Not for much longer. He’s so old now.”
“He is six hundred years old, (Y/N).”
“Six hundred and eighty-five, he never lets us forget it. Although no one else is supposed to know. He walks with a cane now, says life is finally catching up with him.”
“Considering he is six hundred and eighty-five.”
You both laughed just as Ron and Hermione caught up to you right outside the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. You sat and took your books only to put them up right away— along with every other student— when Moody said to. Everyone froze in confusion and shock when he announced that he was going to perform the Imperius Curse on all of you.
“Not to worry. Professor Dumbledore gave the okay. You students are perfectly safe. He agrees that it’s good to learn the hard way.”
Hermione’s eyebrows scrunched up in alarm as her hand shot up. “Sir, isn’t that highly illegal.”
Lavender Brown echoed Hermione’s sentiments followed by several other students.
“Would you rather know what it’s like now or be out there where someone wants to actually hurt you? The point is so you can figure out if you can fight it.”
That shut everyone up. You looked over at Neville who was at the desk right next to you and Ron’s. He nodded when you mouthed him a question, asking if he was okay. If it wasn’t the Cruciatus Curse, the other Unforgivable Curses didn’t really affect him too much— not much more than it might affect everyone else. One by one you all stood up as Moody reached your desk and tried to resist the curse. You watched each of your classmates fail and do embarrassing but not painful things.
Neville became a champion gymnast, Lavender imitated a squirrel with scarily good accuracy. Dean managed to hop on one leg while also being an opera singer, Hermione suddenly had enough strength to lift two students in their chairs at the same time. While funny, no one was successful. It was Harry’s turn. Professor Moody tried to make him jump up on the desk. For a good bit of time everyone watched in awe as Harry seemed to be resisting. You were staring and smiling too, proud of your friend, until suddenly you heard what sounded like the most painful snapping sounds and Harry was on top of the desk.
“Harry!” you yelled.
“It’s alright, I’ve got it.” Professor Moody mended his bones immediately. “It’s cause he was trying to stop the jump all the way to the very end. Well done, Potter. Everyone, that’s what we want to see!”
Cheers went around the class as everyone sat down. Moody went to the chalkboard to begin writing ways to improve will power in order to resist the Imperius Curse. He suddenly stopped and turned back around.
“Ms. Black, do you want to try it?”
“But—”
“She’s a squib! If we can barely resist, how can someone with almost no magic?” a girl voiced.
You sunk down in your seat, Ron patting your knee under the desk in his own way to try and comfort you. Being in classes with seventh years where no one questioned your existence easily made you forget how quickly you were shot down in other classes. Even Transfiguration would be the same if it wasn’t for the fact that you became a successful Animagus. You heard the way some of your classmates would mumbled how annoyed they were when it was your time to transform something because McGonagall would spend a good ten minutes working with you— meaning the class could never get their earlier dismissal— before saying it was alright and moving on. Usually, they would then cough squib as you all exited class and proceed to voice very loudly how they wished you would just drop out. The bullying was never as extreme as you thought it might be when you first got to Hogwarts last year but it was still there and it still hurt.
Professor Moody whipped out his wand again. “You should all know what the effects are, even if you can’t resist.”
You got up from your chair and moved to stand in front of your desk. You couldn’t lie, the Imperius Curse kind of tickled. A curse meant to make the victim do whatever did it not through pain like the other curses but almost a soft coaxing. You were suddenly very mellow. Just like he did with all the other students, Professor Moody waited till you seemed to be in an almost drug-like state before stating out loud what he wanted you to do so the rest of the class would know the command that was supposed to be resisted. Stand on the professor’s desk and yell Hufflepuff as loud as possible— preferably so another class would hear.
No, you thought. Just like everyone else.
Professor Moody’s voice got louder in your head, even though he repeated the command very calmly for the class. You were almost caught up to Harry’s resisting time. Everyone watched amazed that you were tied with him when his resistance time came up. Moody’s voice was so loud in your head that it was deafening. Your foot lifted up and everyone prepared for the walk to the professor’s desk. You weren’t though.
It became a pride thing, just like being an Animagus was a pride thing. Everything you could do as a squib, you were determined to do. That determination is what made you an Animagus. That determination is what made you hold a mandrake leaf in your mouth for an entire month. Moody suddenly became quieter in your head when you thought about the mandrake leaf. You weren’t just determined, because what was determination? Patience and hard-work. Being a Hufflepuff. And soon Moody’s voice became completely silent as you remembered a different thought. Your raised foot took a step back to help propel you onto you and Ron’s desk. The class gasped as you crossed your leg, smoothed at your skirt and told Professor Moody.
“You know, I think I’d rather not yell Hufflepuff at the top of my lungs. I will, however, yell I’M A SQUIB! I really do hope another class heard that.” You smiled cheekily.
Professor Moody jumped and slapped one palm against the other so hard that you thought it was going to break. He told the entire class that was how to resist the Imperius Curse. Moody looked back at you— you were almost positive the glass eye somehow became even more focused.
“How’d you do it?” he asked excitedly.
“I just had a funny thought, Professor.”
“A funny thought?”
“Yes, the day the Imperius Curse could work on me is the day I can conjure a patronus.”
Moody stood there for a moment, bursting out into laughter when he realized what you meant as you waved your practically useless wand around in lazy circles. Harry chuckled as well from behind you. Hermione gave you a thumbs up and Ron started the loudest round of applause you think you ever received in your life— and that was saying something because the applause in the Hufflepuff common room when you became an Animagus could give a thunderstorm a run for its money.
On the grounds of having one student succeed and another almost do the same, Moody dismissed you early and told you all to enjoy some rest before lunch. Everyone piled out the room excited to do nothing for the rest of the day. With Moody’s dismissal, your classes were finished because it was time for the visiting students to arrive.

PAST:
percy was destined to achieve great things, you see. he had the mind,  the determination and persistance for it. he'd managed to fit in his  studies, social life, bonus subjects, extracurriculars and being a  prefect and head boy. and he enjoyed it, he truly did - the  responsibility over others and himself, being on the move all day every  day. in a family of seven kids, one as chaotic as the weasleys, it was  hard to have your achievements be acknowledged always, to stand out. but at school, percy was the best at what he did. every good grade, every professor's praise made it all worth it.
a future career at the ministry was a well planned out goal of percy's and whatever he set his mind to would always happen.  he was so close -- right after graduating, at the age of eighteen, he  could win an internship at the ministry, working with fudge, being his  mentee. it would be a dream come true for percy and everything he worked  so hard for would pay out -- so many opportunities, a shit ton of money  and that'd be just the beginning.
at the end, there was  just percy and one other person considered for the internship. sure,  percy might have worked a hundred times harder, he might have been  smarter, but there was one thing he lacked - money and connections.  percy did not get picked and suddenly, he felt like it was all for  nothing. he still recalls the awkward silence as his family watched him  read the letter. perhaps they'd expected him to blow up or go on tangent  of how much better he was as percy does, but he didn't really react. and that's when the burnout finally settled in. what was the point?
for the next two years percy was quite unrecognizable and it was  noticeable he'd lost the passion and drive. sort of drifted apart from  his family, as well, especially when he moved out ( and basically lived at the three broomsticks because that's where he'd spend most of the his nights. the bar, that is ).  the biggest shock was when he didn't continue his education at  aurelius; especially for molly. a series of bad decisions later, percy  did end up picking himself up. there's only so much time one can handle  without mansplaining the wizarding history to people.
HEADCANONS & PERSONALITY
percy still gets carried away in his goals to the point he ends up  overlooking or hurting those closest to him - partners, family,  friends. he doesn't mean it most of the time and he truly cares for  them, just shows it in a.. percy way.
a lot less uptight than in his younger years, but still a pretentious little shit. you don't know more about him on that subject and that's that on that. could argue for hours, but he always has to be right. if he admits defeat, it's a big deal so the person ought to feel special.
huge quidditch fan and loves old muggle rock bands. oh and classical music. you will find him blasting lacrimosa at 3am during the exam session
would rather break his own leg than admit he needs help, even emotionally. he's the one who takes care of things and people, not the other way around.
has a patrick bateman ass routine. big on taking care of himself, but smokes like a chimney.
seems arrogant and is to an extent, but percy’s extremely hard on himself
he’s such a virgo it hurts
WANTED CONNECTIONS
someone he tutors. this person’s on the verge of failing this class and doesn’t want to take it seriously, which just gets on percy’s nerves. every tutor session these two are on the verge of killing each other.
ex. they dated for four years and things were pretty serious but they broke it off a few months ago. it was a... turbulent relationships and things are pretty awkward now. they’d rather not be in the same room together.
other ex. they were ‘high school’ sweethearts. ended up breaking up when they were eighteen, around the time percy lost the internship. it was percy’s fault because he refused to be vulnerable with them at that time and was, in other words, an inconsiderate asshole. maybe they’ve reconciled and are on good terms now or they haven’t been in touch since then.

I kind of hate that You-Know-Who (no, not Voldy) has made it so that Ravenclaws, quote on quote “push each other around for the top spot” and “claim famous witches and wizards to be from there House when there not”.
Ravenclaws don’t value glory (like the Gryffindor’s) or power (like the Slytherins). It’s the pure act of learning that they value. Sure some will care which grades they get, but others (like Luna) just want to absorb every bit of information that they can get.
I would honestly argue that there House that has the least amount of internal fights aside from Hufflepuff. Sure Slytherin’s and Gryffindor’s have camaraderie, but both are also extremely cliquey. There’s no denying that there aren’t groups in Ravenclaw, but the majority will just kind of be like, “You like books and hang around mostly with the bookworms? Okay. Can you help me write this paper even though I’m usually around the debate kids?” They separate based on interest and skill yes, but then help one another out when it comes to utilizing those skills.
I’ve always headcannoned that every Wednesday they go over what has happened during the beginning of the week and then what’s going to happen so that they can form little study groups together, and if they don’t want to study for a class they can just group up and research whatever peaks there interest.
Ravenclaws aren’t pretentious and competitive douche bags. There just what happens when you put theater kids, bookworms, and school try-hards in one space.

Fear is the Mind Killer
Ok so, I’m still a sucker for shipping. I’d originally pitched an idea of the Durmstrang and Beuxbaton’s candidates being in a long distance relationship and that the goblet of fire/tri-wizard tourney was the perfect excuse to meet up in person and date.  Just to explain/ maybe spoiler a thing later.  Also: The Book ‘Dune’ by Frank Herbert is a phenomenal read (Wrote in 1965) As always, huge thanks to @slytherincursebreaker for a wonderful prompt idea. This has been incredibly fun to think about and small enough to fit into my schedule!  Thank you so much!
Lilian stood at the entrance of the Maze. A giant, monolithic gate opened before her, the stench of ages blowing past in a desperate bid to escape the confines of their stone prison.  “For the next Challenge, Each contestant will enter the maze at different points. Within the center of the maze lies five chests, each with a new and varied clue to their next challenge.”  Professor Dumbledore nodded as the respective teachers of each school placed in the hands of their students the torch before wrapping the blindfold around their eyes. Lilian smiled appreciatively towards where she thought Professor Flitwick was, both for the assistance with her hair and the emotional support right before the match.  “Teach them What for, Miss Le’Reau!” He whispered before leaving. Shortly after he had left and the doors had closed, the torch flared to life, Sapphire flames flickering light against the walls. Lilian squeaked a little as her vision had returned. She reached up to check, but stopped just as she was about to touch it.
“Caleb Sloan has been disqualified from the competition!”  Lilian froze at that. So she would have been disqualified as well, had she checked on her blindfold?! She took a breath. No, no need to worry. She had this. She knew what she was doing... Of course.  She went to grab her wand, but felt nothing. Then she remembered the rules of the challenge; ‘Your only means of defense shall be your torch. Let your wits and guile lead you’.
Lilian groaned internally before looking around. While it wasn’t perfect sight, she did feel a slight... Seismograph? As if her vibrations resonated with the torch and gave her insight into her immediate surroundings.  Armed with this knowledge, she proceeded forward.  It had been nearly thirty minutes of continual walking when a booming voice announced that a competitor had reached the center and claimed a chest.
Lilian nodded and sighed. Despite the continual progress of her torch, it hardly seemed to grow any brighter.  “Because you’re blinded by these weak fools.” Lilian flinched, but kept her feet perfectly planted.  She didn’t need to see to feel him.  “You were destined for greatness as one of His disciples. I would have elevated you from nothing into his personal warrior. Yet you refuse. But I’ll forgive you. Just this once. All you need do, is to remove that blindfold and follow me...” She could see him now, bathed in the crimson glow of the torch. A disheveled man in a dark wizards cloak, tattered and ragged. The insane dark wizard who had tried to kidnap her all those years ago.  Lilian remembered all too well that day. The Panic, the fear... But then.  Then Uncle Rorick came.  That’s right, she’s no little girl. She was nearly a grown woman, more than capable of defending herself. She needed to focus. His voice was distracting that. That was what she was being afraid of. "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” She slowly exhaled and opened her eyes once more. What she saw had actually shocked her. The torch shone brightly as she saw five pedestals. But there no more chests. Two had been smashed open while the other three were missing.  “The time for the trial has now expired! Any competitors left within the maze shall now be retrieved!”  ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lilian sat in the Competitor’s tent, head in her hands. She’d done it, but what did she have to show for it. She only raised her head when she’d heard the sounds of an argument outside.  “-RAT FACED BITCH!”  Evelina was apparently yelling at Tsukiko, who simply wore a smirk.  “Said the graceless bear of Durmstrang. I saw an opportunity, and I took it. You should be thankful you had found your clues before mine.”  Lilian stood there, motionless as the competitors from Beuxbaton, Durmstrang and Mahoutokoro had finished their arguement, with the third of the group leaving with a smug air of satisfaction about her.  Then Evelina turned and saw Lilian. “You! You’re the one who cleared the knight in twelve seconds! Tell me, What colors were the pillars in the center?”  Lilian looked confused, slightly before taking a breath. “They were different colors, each pillar representing our own school.”  Evelina nodded before digging into her pocket. “I do not like it when an honest competition is interrupted by spineless witches who only seek fame. This was supposed to be a chance for us to compete and grow against each other. So, I will do this with only one condition.”  Lilian felt something slap into her hand, and stared at it in awe. A compass and a silver feather.  “Win.”  Evelina smirked to Lilian before walking away. “And you, Mr. Fancy, owe me a date.”  Nathaniel simply shrugged towards Lilian. “Ce la Vie. Love cannot be controlled. Especially with Evelina.” Lilian stood there, dumbfounded.  “Merula’s not going to believe this... Merde, NO ONE will ever believe this.”

CAELUM BLACK ✶ archie renaux, 23, cisman, he/him, pureblood, fourth year, magical law ( international cooperation ). member of slytherin quidditch team, competitive potions, extreme wizard chess, and debate team. can be described as distant, rebellious, compassionate, self-sabotaging.
stats.
full name: caelum regulus black
nicknames(s): cee, black
age: twenty-three
birthday: october 25, 1999
hometown: london, england
gender: cis male
pronouns: he / him
orientation: bisexual
house: slytherin
specialization: magical law ( international cooperation )
extracurriculars: member of slytherin quidditch team, competitive potions, extreme wizard chess, and debate team.
bio.
tw: cancer
caelum regulus black might as well have been named atlas. from the moment he was born to regulus and anjali black, the weight of being the heir to the black family was on his shoulders. his parents would go on to have another child, but caelum would always be the oldest and next in line to inherit his family's wealth and social status.
from a young age, he had a habit of asking too many questions for his grandparents’ liking. his father never discouraged it - he seemed quietly fond of caelum’s rebellious nature, especially when he disagreed with anything involving blood purity. but, he also made sure caelum understood that at the end of the day, he was a black, and he had to carry on the family legacy. personal beliefs were secondary to the role and responsibilities tied with being from the noble and most ancient house of black.
he went to thiudreiks, finally away from the pressures of his grandparents and the emotional absence of his parents for awhile. there, he made friends with who he could, working to toe the line between being the person he wanted to be and being the man his family expected him to become. caelum never supported blood purity, but he understood that his father expected him to keep his grandparents happy, and that meant sticking with the right people. he associated with all sorts of different people, but the people he was closest to had to be the best of the best. caelum didn't always like it, but he had decided that he would work with the system that was in place for now with the knowledge that once walburga and orion finally died, he could be who he wanted.
however, things have begun to shift recently. over the summer, caelum found out his father was diagnosed with cancer. he’s currently undergoing treatment, but it’s still unknown whether it will be terminal or not. in the meantime, his grandmother has shifted her attention to caelum as the next black to inherit everything. and frankly? caelum is over it. he’s worried about his father, he wants to finish school, he wants to be his own person - because his dad spent his whole life being exactly who his parents wanted him to be, and where did that get him?
caelum has been more rebellious recently, more defiant in ways he wasn’t before. and most importantly, he’s done pretending that blood purity means anything at all. he’s still distant and hurting over everything with his father, but he wants to put himself out there in some ways more. he wants to live a little recklessly, and get to know the rest of his family, seeing as they might be all he has left. caelum is reevaluating his life so far, and there are definitely thing he wants to change.
headcanons.
the generational trauma in the black family is off the charts truly, so caelum has a complicated relationship with his dad ! reg never really shook off the pressures of his parents, and stayed their golden boy since there was no war. as a result, caelum grew up in the EXACT same pressure, and he'd be lying if he said he didn't resent his dad for it. but he also loves regulus ? he's closer to him than he is his mom or his grandparents, but even then, he's not close.
anjali and regulus were set up by their parents. she came from a wealthy anglo-indian pureblood family, and was very distant for most of caelum's life. truly caelum has never known his monther and likely never will.
truly hates walburga with every fiber of his being. he hated orion too, but i think orion probably died a few years ago.
i think he reminds regulus so much of sirius at times, so regulus was always fond but distant with him.
he has a younger sibling that i will be requesting, so stay tuned for more family headcanons !
caelum's always been kind of quiet in school. i think he had friends, but he was never really close with them. he knew a lot about them, but they never really got to know him ( yay him literally being just like his mom in some ways too ). as he got older, he's probably come out of his shell some. i'd love if he actually was close to some people now !
he's studying magical law per his family's recommendation. i think he doesn't love it, but he doesn't hate it either. caelum's good at it, and that's what matters, right ? if he could do it all over, i think he'd chose to be something else, but he thinks it's too late for that now.
caelum likes sports / doing activities that get him out of his own head, which is why he does quidditch and extreme wizard chess. he loves quidditch, and running / staying in shape for it.
he's become much more reckless and careless since his dad was diagnosed, because fuck it, right ? like, regulus lived his whole life for other people, and caelum doesn't want to be in the same boat. he's really over everything to do with being a black. i feel like it's the prime time for him to get into shenanigans for sure.
wanted connections.

He wants to find out about the mysterious event that's supposed to take place at Hogwarts this year, an event involving two other rival schools of magic, and a competition that hasn't happened for a hundred years. He wants to be a normal, fourteen-year-old wizard. But unfortunately for Harry Potter, he's not normal - even by wizarding standards. And in his case, differences can be deadly.
Plot:
The Dursleys have a decision to make. To get rid of Harry a week earlier than they had hoped for would equal Harry being able to go to the International Quidditch Cup game. This would make him happy, something they tried to avoid at every opportunity. With the threat of Harry's godfather, Sirius Black, whom Harry decided not to tell them that Sirius was innocent, the Dursleys allowed Harry to go. Seeing Bulgaria vs. Ireland, next to his best friends, Ron and Hermione, was only the second two best things in his life behind finding out he was a wizard. But all fun and games cannot last forever, as after the game was when the Death Eaters (the name given to Voldemort’s followers) attacked. Fleeing for their lives, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and a house elf was found in the woods under the Dark Mark (Voldemort’s symbol). Knowing this is all connected to a weird dream that left his scar burning, Harry could not dwell on this matter for long as something exciting was happening at Hogwarts. Come October, the school will host the Triwizard Tournament, featuring the other wizarding schools Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. To make this tournament safer than in previous years, as students died while competing, the headmasters set an age limit at sixteen, and made sure each of the three tasks had a way to get the champions out of danger. With the goblet of fire drawing the names, everyone was shocked when the goblet pulled forth a fourth name to compete in the competition: Harry Potter. Underage, and an unwanted champion, the rules stayed, causing Harry to compete against the other champions for the prize. Whoever put his name in the goblet wanted Harry dead, and as new and old enemies come to surface, Harry must literally fight  to survive his three most deadliest challenges yet.
Thoughts:
This would be my favourite Harry Potter book. Full of action and adventure, J.K Rowling really put the limits to her world at the test as this book introduces us to wizarding school systems, their politics, magical creatures’ rights, some romance that you did not see coming, and the test of friendship. This book also takes a turn at the plotline for the series, advancing it much further than the previous books have done so. With being halfway through the series, the ending events for this book will set the stage for the rest of the series. Besides that, Rowling made a lot of side plots of the stories that did not make it into the 2005 movie, that advance the world that Rowling made. The fact that Hagrid is a half-giant, and what that meant, Hermione and her House-Elf Liberation Front, and Hermione's extra fun battle against Rita Skeeter; all had a story arc within the book that did not make the film. Rolwing also started including wizarding jobs that people have, from more information on the Ministry of Magic and how that works, Fred and George joke shop plan, and Auror, the wizarding idea of being a police, whose job is to track and capture wizards who practice the dark arts. Then there are the three challenges that Rowling made for the tournament that you read about Harry avoiding planning his strategy for them, the last minute panic, and then finally doing the challenge. Overall, if the previous three books made you feel bored, and that Harry Potter may not be for you, this book changes that as the adventure grows and the real plot for the series begins.

2. ...And the New
Chapter index
September, 2023 (7th year)
The first day of their seventh year was brimming with new and exciting things. First, Scorpius and Rose became Head Boy and Head Girl, and that of itself, dictated the entertainment for the rest of the year. Just the thought of the two of them, trying to figure out how to deal and tolerate the other, had many returning students placing bets on their first day back, some as soon as they settled in for their first Hogwarts dinner of the upcoming year.
“To our new students, Welcome to Hogwarts!” McGonagall says in a way of welcome, earning an excited applause and some high-pitched cheers from the fresh meat.
“And to our returning students, Welcome Back!” This brought out some walloping whoops as the Great Hall filled with bursting applause from the older students, overwhelming the excitable, happy newcomers.
The sheer enthusiasm and liveliness of youth brought a surge of warmth and pride to McGonagall, causing the Headmistress to give one of her rare smiles as she let her kids run through their rowdiness. It was going to be an exhilarating year, after all.
“As with every year, I shall expect the very best from all of you! Tradition dictates a select group of upper-year pupils assist the Heads of Houses and myself in the day-to-day functions of the school in the capacity of Prefect. So I give you, your Head Prefects for this year: Rose Weasley and Scorpius Malfoy! Congratulations to the two of you!”
Another round of applause overtook the Great Hall, however, this time McGonagall raised her hand to silent the mass before they became too rowdy. There would be time for that much later.
She needed the students' calm for this next
announcement.
“Now, I am thrilled to announce that this year, Hogwarts will once again be hosting the Triwizard Tournament! It is a privilege and honor to have this international celebration of magical excellency and fellowship, right here at our school! The tournament will test one of your peers in the most dangerous and punishing of tasks to win the Triwizard Cup, one thousand Galleons, and Eternal Glory!”
“And probably an eternity of bruises,” Alice whispered snidely to Rose.
“Given the nature of this tournament, rules have been stipulated for the safety of all candidates and to ensure a fair competition.” A grim expression replaced the earlier joviality McGonagall had displayed.
“Additional rulings have been made in light of the tragedy that befell us the last time we hosted such an event. The Interim Chief of Magical Games and Sports, as well as Hogwarts Alumni, Serafeim Avery, is here to disclose such proceedings.”
She gestured to the man with short blond hair and in traditional wizard robes standing behind the podium. He looked very old and yet young at the same time, a certain eerie aura surrounded him.
“But first, let us take a moment to honor the dearly departed. A moment of silence for the tragic loss of a most beloved son, a kind and exceptional student, Cedric Diggory.”
As a heavy silence overtook the Great Hall, Rose glanced at her family, who were all somber, knowing they were recalling the story of Diggory's death just as she was. They knew how dangerous it was. How Uncle Harry was set up by a death eater. How quiet and sad her parents would get at the mention of Cedric’s name. How her uncle and parents refuse to talk about the event at length. Rose felt hot liquid tear up in the back of her eyes and mentally riled herself up.
She knew McGonagall was a great headmistress, but this was stupid. Way too many students have died during the tournaments. Three bloody times, for Merlin’s sake! That’s why it was discontinued in the first place. And it should’ve stayed that way. Albus better not be getting any bright ideas or else she’d wring his neck before he even gets past the age line of Goblet of fire. She didn't want anyone to get hurt really, worried eyes fleeting towards the Slytherin table where Scorpius, Albus, and Cole were sitting.
“Think long and carefully before you drop your name,” McGonagall said gravely, breaking the solemn silence. “Eternal glory is a worthy cause, but not worth any of your lives.”
A pause.
“Now for the Head of Magical Games and Sports.” The Headmistress left the podium to her seat. The man standing behind the podium stepped up, and began to announce a very long and boring list of new or changed legalities.
Rose took this time to wonder. Cole might join in, just for kicks and giggles. Scorpius had on a blank expression as usual. She could hardly ever read his emotions, let alone this far away. A brick had more expressions than the bloke. Somehow, he noticed her staring at him, and he raised a questioning eyebrow at her gaze. Quickly averting her eyes, she focused on the podium again. A deep part of her hoped that none of her cousins entered this stupid competition (her cousins were all crazy, it didn't matter what their gender was, they were all insane).
“-To summarize, the most imperative revisions are as follows. Those who can enter their name in the Goblet of Fire must be at least seventeen years old, no exceptions. Anyone putting in a name not their own will be met with severe punishment.”
The man’s eyes moved slowly across the Great Hall, never wavering or staying on anyone for too long. “Contestants are not allowed to investigate or attempt to actively elucidate any challenges after sunset without a professor’s permission or supervision. Because of the nature of this competition, the Board has decided, if there is any proven suspicion of malicious intent, the Triwizard Tournament will be stopped immediately. Student safety is our priority, first and foremost.”
After finishing his closing remarks, the man promptly stepped off the podium, the Hogwarts Headmistress smoothly replacing the now unoccupied space.
“Earlier, I declared that the Triwizard Tournament is an international event,” McGonagall started, though her earlier elation now replaced by haunted shadows.
“And so, Hogwarts will be home to two astounding institutions for the upcoming year as they also participate in the Triwizard Tournament. Let us welcome our friends from Beauxbatons Academy and their Headmistress!”
McGonagall pointed at the huge double doors of the Great Hall, just as they burst open to reveal three rows of beautiful young girls in light blue uniforms.
Dominique softly gasped as she recognized some of her old classmates. Soon, they began to sing a lovely tune, with a lifting melody, in perfect harmony, that put everyone in a haze as the gals made their way slowly down the middle of the hall. The tune was familiar to Dom, who quickly realized it was an old hymn from an ancient text they had to memorize at the all-girls’ academy. It was written by the Veela in the Dark Age to lure people to follow through on their desires. The tune didn't hold as much effect on those part Veela, like herself and her siblings. Despite the very small percentage, the subtle lineage was quite prominent in Dominique (⅛ Veela has more negatives than positives I suppose).
From how small the Great Hall had seemed, they probably used a charm to expand the room space and tables, Rose deduced distractedly. McGonagall resumed after the visiting students settled in one half of the extra tables provided.
“Next, welcome Durmstrang Institute and their Headmaster!” Adorned in maroon outfits with ruby red accents, handsome young men marched through the open doors in three rows, canes in hand that struck the ground in a rhythmic beat.
The Durmstrang students mirrored the French students’ entrance, but in stark contrast to the latter's grace and elegance. Delicate motions, pretty smiles, and a flexible dance exhibition, were now replaced by stiff movements, stoic expressions, and deep, rumbly chanting. Their performance was an impressive martial arts display of various techniques and formations, showing off the even more impressive physique.
As the three schoolmasters reconnected, the
Durmstrangs made their way and filled up the leftover seats in the Great Hall. After personally greeting the visiting school’s respective Headmistress and Headmaster, McGonagall addressed the restless mass of hungry students.
“Now that we are all settled, I extend another warm welcome to our guests. Please consider Hogwarts your home for the next year. And before we begin to eat, a speech.”
“We are currently making history. As we sit here now, and continue to join together, understand that this year will be a remarkable year for yourselves and the world. For in this year 2023, we hold The Triwizard Tournament. A rare and legendary opportunity to show off all the skills and knowledge you have accumulated throughout your education.
Though most will not be able to participate, after all, only three will be chosen. One student from each school will be chosen to stand alone. Chosen to compete in three deadly tasks that will challenge you. Have no doubt about it. These tasks will confuse you, they will scare you, and they may kill you. 'Tis’ not for the faint of heart.”
A pregnant pause filled the room, many students holding their breaths, some even clutching their chests or pants.
“But, if you do survive, if you happen to win, then your name will be legend. Have no doubt about it. Doors will open. Imagination becomes reality. Possibilities are limitless. And your name will forever be remembered in honor. For legends never die. For that is why this competition was founded. All for Eternal Glory! To have a chance at such a legacy, one need only write their name upon a piece of parchment and throw it into the Goblet of Fire before the time limit. Take care though, if this is the path you choose to take, there is no turning back.”
Rampant whispers began to fly, heads turning back and forth excitedly as the students began to speculate. Before she lost the hold on their attention for good, the Hogwarts Headmistress finished curtly.
“But more specifics on that later. Now, let’s feast!” With a wave of her hand outwards, McGonagall made a bounty of food appear in generous amounts on all the tables.

I finally saw Battle Royale from 2000. And its importance now as a landmark of cinema that has influenced 20 years of global pop culture puts me in the uncomfortable position of admitting that I think it is overrated and kind of stupid.
I understand that it is a broad satire of the enormous pressures and competitive structure of the Japanese public education system. I get that it is intentionally melodramatic. I get that I am supposed to appreciate how goofy it can get. But the commentary is obvious after 10 minutes, and the joke of the whole thing stops being funny soon after.
This movie is unbearably long. I get it: teen soap drama and then gruesome murders. In 2000 this was edgey and intriguing (probably). But by the 17th time, you aren't saying anything remotely new with or about that. And we're only halfway done? What else is there? This basic premise alone isn't that complex of a thing to explore.
I kept waiting for more layers of depth or parody. There aren't any. And while I am not offended by fake movie gore, if school children doing murders is literally all you have and you just keep doing that for 2 hours, that is the definition of gratuitous.
No I didn't identify emotionally with any of the characters. They're not characters, they are broad tropes performing mechanically in a broad satire. There is nothing to identify with. They do murders, act like they're in Degrassi, do more murders, do more Degrassi, isn't that an ironic juxtaposition? Yes it is. Once or twice. More than that, it is just unrealistic and obnoxious.
Of course no real teens would keep up petty relationship drama in the face of real murders. That is part of the metaphor. But again, if you keep doing that for 2 hours, my attention is drawn to the goofiness of it all, it creates an unrelatable universe with weird rules, and now I'm watching aliens do arbitrary things for confusing reasons. I'm mired in your nonsense and I've lost the thread of your satire.
Maybe 2023, after all the years of me absorbing the references and knock offs of this thing, is too late for me to appreciate it. Maybe part of the appeal was how novel the concept of Saved By the Bell + a slasher movie was in 2000. I guess it would probably have been then. But it certainly isn't now.
Relatively few people saw this movie outside of Japan before like 2011. It was notorious among film critics and international cinema buffs years before that, and was hugely influential to at least a couple generations of young filmmakers, like Tarantino, i.e., when he made Kill Bill. I specifically remember Volcano High, an early South Korean "tribute" that was basically just Battle Royale but they were all wizards. And I like Kill Bill, and I liked Volcano High.
But both of those movies had more substance and deeper characters. The gore in Kill Bill wasn't just ironic novelty, it was part of a wild story. The parody and melodrama of Volcano High was sharper and funnier, if only specifically because the fights were not lethal (the stakes were lower so the persistence of the goofy teen relationship drama made more sense).
Battle Royale is a 10 minute short film stretched out to an abusive length. And at that point, unless you are getting off to Japanese teens murdering each-other, there isn't much else here.
Yes I DID notice the weird psuedo-upskirt shots of what are supposed to be children. Blah blah blah, "Japan is not the West, not woke enough for you, snowflake?, maybe you aren't wordly enough to appreciate the brilliant cultural satire of repeated longing glances at schoolgirls' thighs," etc etc.
Except here is the thing: I am an American, and so are many of you. You are NOT appreciating it on some kind of profound Japanese level. Even of you think you're supposed to. Assuming there is one. I think a lot of you are getting off to it, and so are the filmmakers, and I'll allow you 10 minutes of that, but then I'm kink-shaming. It is kind of trashy. And not in a sarcastic, artful way. It's just sexy teen cheese shots mixed with gore. For 2 goddamn hours. I'm not disgusted, I'm embarrassed and bored. I'm not masturbating to this so why do I need to be here, you weirdos?
It isn't a bad movie. It is competently made, and I appreciate how it is shot to look like a TV teen soap. And I guess the performances are fine, such as they are. Hambone is the order of the day, and they are that. I can't blame the actors for doing what the director wanted, even if I personally don't appreciate what he was going for.
But yeah, this has NOT aged well. Maybe if you are presently in high school and mad about it, you can connect with some of this. There must be a market there for this sort of thing, or they wouldn't keep making new animes of cute teens who do horrible murders. And they certainly do that. I don't know.
As far as I am concerned, it all lacks profundity. And inspired a generation or two of people thinking it is okay to sexualize teenage girls so long as they are doing stabbings. And it isn't, unless you have a point to make with that.
And you don't, because this movie came out in 2000 and already made that point. Such as it is. Over and over again, exhaustingly, across two very long hours.
Ugh.
