2x09 table scene
Okay so...it's a slow season at work, which means more rewatches and you guys dealing with my frequent posts.
I have yet to really talk about the table scene.
Carmy was definitely making love to Sydney emotionally and mentally under this table. He got her to open up and tore down the barriers she put up. It was a full-on courtship we were watching and you can tell by the looks he was giving her how he truly feels about Syd.
"I'm sure she's great"
"She is.."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was this moment when Carmy said Claire was great, Syd asks, "Yeah?" and there's this pause Syd holds a breath and Carmy is no longer focused on his side of the table but his eyes are on Syd, holding her gaze.
After this Claire is no longer mentioned in this conversation and the focus is on Syd.
Now I think unconsciously Carmy was talking about the woman in front of him scaring the shit of him because of how great Syd is. Because he says his girl that's a friend is great but later on, he's telling Syd how she makes him better, how he couldn't do this without her...
When he asked Syd what she was afraid of, I couldn't get over how gentle that was. As always, with Syd- he could stop focusing and internalizing things within and could focus on someone else, and it felt easy. It was a give and take.
Tumblr media
Also, Carmy did such a great job being there for Syd in this scene. I know we should be mad at Carmy for leaving Syd. But he opened up first, then Syd opened up, and he took it from there and gave her the space to be vulnerable.
"I won't let you." We had 3 moments where he confirmed he wouldn't let Syd fail- the first was saying "I won't let you," The headshake, and the "I got that thing I wanna give you.". So even when he reassured Syd during the table fix, he still took more time affirming to her he wouldn't let her fail by giving her the jacket.
Tumblr media
I think someone mentioned the "You're not alone" moment, it's like he took an inhale in before he gave her a nod. I swear this was when Carmy was really falling for Syd.
Tumblr media
JAWS you gotta stop or keep giving us unconscious communication if you don't mean it.

The Chief And The Intern
Chief x Reader
Was Waiting All Along
Tumblr media
It had been months since you had heard from John. Life hadn’t been the same since you’d gone back to finish your last semester of your master degree. University used to excite you, but after having run around the galaxy with the UNSC, being in actual danger, you felt bored.
Your friends noticed the difference when suddenly you were unavailable to go to the mall, and more interested in visiting the firing range.
Your mother almost fainted when she learned you’d taken up a martial arts class in your spare time. Your grades weren’t suffering, so you didn’t exactly see the problem.
Your father had pestered you every day to submit your application to his company, but the only place you’d sent your application was the UNSC’s board of communications.
You were going to find John, and the rest of Blue Team. You couldn’t just submit to the life your parents wanted for you, even if you’d be monumentally disappointing them.
You were scrolling through your laptop in your little dormitory when you saw it. You’d been scrolling through emails for hours, each rejection letter making your heart sink further and further when you saw it.
“We would like to receive your application for our recently opened clerical assistant position.”
It wasn’t exactly what you wanted to be doing but there was one little phrase that caught your eye.
“Reporting to Spartan Lieutenant 104”
There was no way. Fred had found you? How in the world had he managed that? You took a quick glance over the email before following the provided link to submit your application and cover letter.
“You did what?” your father asked as you silently cut into your steak.
“I applied to the UNSC, and I got in. I’m leaving after the graduation ceremony,” you stated firmly.
“But what about the job your father lined up for you at his company! You’re just going to throw that away? I can’t imagine the UNSC is going to pay someone very much for communications work,” your mother rambled frantically as she set her fork down.
Family diners in your parent’s penthouse were always tense, but this was another ball park entirely.
“It’s clerical work actually,” you muttered.
“Yn! What are you thinking!” your mother asked.
I’m thinking there’s a very handsome space soldier up there waiting for me. I’m thinking I’m tired of being coddled at thirty two years old.
“It’s a good opportunity. Free travel, important connections-“
“It’s unsafe!”
“Nowhere is safe Mom!” You said, slamming your knife on the table. “I’m tired of pretending that Sydney is safe just because it makes you feel better to have me at arm's length,” you said, standing from your place at the table.
“You’re not going to survive out there, yn,” your father scoffed.
“Maybe I wouldn’t have before, but things are different now. I’m not changing my mind on this.”
Your parents didn’t come to your graduation ceremony. You noticed that their chairs were empty as you lined up to walk across the stage.
It left a bitter taste in your mouth. You were being punished for not doing what you were told. Despite having argued with them, you’d at least wanted them to attend.
You tried to smile for the pictures as you walked across the stage, but it didn’t feel real. After the ceremony you packed your suitcases and left your dorm for the shuttles.
What if John wasn’t waiting for you anymore? What if you got up there and he’d moved on entirely?
You felt your throat tighten as you neared the pickup and your legs began to shake.
Were you making a mistake? Could you still turn around? Your parents would never respect you if you did.
You shook your head, silencing these thoughts as you loaded onto the shuttle. This wasn’t just about John. You were doing this for yourself as well.
“Wasn’t she supposed to be here already?”
Fred didn’t bother answering the question, knowing full well that if he told John the cargo ship was running late he’d probably grab a rifle and a ship and go out looking for you himself.
Six months wasn’t a long time, but it was long enough to make the Master Chief miss you so much he could hardly breathe.
“She’ll get here when she gets here,” Fred said with a shrug as they waited in the cargo hold.
“She’ll probably be hungry, we should take her to the mess. She’s probably forgotten how to get there,” Kelly said, admittedly excited to see you again.
When the intercom finally announced the arrival of your ship, Blue Team sprung into action. John searched the faces of deboarding passengers for you, feeling a sense of panic until your smaller figure appeared, hauling two large suitcases.
He froze all of a sudden, willing his feet to move but unable to do so. He’d never felt this way before. Never had to hesitate, and yet he felt as if his stomach was doing summersaults.
Your eyes finally settled on him, and your feet halted.
Six months. Had anything changed?
You moved first, your hands abandoning their grip on your bags as you ran to him. Time seemed to catch up with the Spartan all of a sudden, and he barely registered that you had flung yourself towards him in time to bend forward and wrap his arms around your waist, hauling you in for a tight hug that squeezed the breath right out of you.
You buried your face in the Chief’s shoulder and sighed, the smell of gunpowder and cinnamon a sure sign that you were home.
“How’d you find me?” You murmured into his shoulder.
“Wasn’t that hard. Had some connections keeping an eye out for you. Ready to get back to work?”
He asked, setting you down as Fred and Kelly retrieved your bags. Linda gave you a firm pay on the shoulder in greeting.
This was exactly what you needed. Blue Team’s support, the promise of adventure on the horizon, and the Chief’s arms around you.
“As I’ll ever be,” you declared with a grin and the Spartan smiled softly at you. He had you back, and this time he wasn’t letting you go anywhere.

On September 25th 1956 the first telephone cable connecting the UK and North America "went live".
At 2,240 miles long, the cable ran from Gallanach Bay, near Oban in Argyll and Bute, to Clarenville, Canada. At the time we only had the one phone company, the General Post Office which didn't become BT until 1980.
Communication between the continents wasn't new, Cyrus Field conquered the ocean with his telegraph cable in 1858. Marconi transmitted successfully the first radio signal from shore to shore in 1901. In 1915 voices sent by radio from Arlington, Va., were heard in Paris. And in 1927, the year of Lindbergh’s superb flight, radiotelephone service was introduced between the United States and The British Isles, the cost of a three minute call at the time was £15!!! This was due to the Transmitters costing an astronomical £500,000 each in 1927.
In 1952, after a newly developed submarine telephone cable proved successful between Florida and Cuba, telephone men of the United States, Britain, and Canada consulted on the feasibility of a transatlantic telephone cable. The types of facilities to be used were reviewed for many months. In a contract dated November 27, 1953, the Bell System, the Post Office and the Canadian Overseas Telecommunication Corporation undertook the international project.
Several types of facilities were used on the new route as it went into service. Telephone calls eastward from the United States will be carried from Portland, Maine, to Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, over a new radio relay system, thence through a single cable across Cabot Strait to Clarenville, Newfoundland. From that point, calls took a Great Circle route through the deep-sea cables which stretched to Oban. Land circuits completed connections to London and other points in England and Scotland.
In all the cable took 3 years to lay and cost £12.5m.
The first pic shows the line reaching Scotland near Oban, it must have been some job laying it.

Qantas honours crew member Luke Davies on Mardi Gras float
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/qantas-honours-crew-member-luke-davies-on-mardi-gras-float/
Qantas honours crew member Luke Davies on Mardi Gras float
Tumblr media
Qantas will honour the life of flight attendant Luke Davies in Saturday night’s Mardi Gras Parade after he and partner Luke Baird’s murder rocked Sydney’s queer community.
Luke began flying with Qantas in Brisbane in 2022 and last year moved to Sydney to work as a flight attendant on international flights.
Ahead of the Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday, his mourning Qantas colleagues requested Luke’s name appear at the front of the float. Each year, the Qantas float typically features the nose of a Qantas plane (above) while staff follow behind.
Qantas’ Executive Manager Cabin Crew Leeanne Langridge previously said Luke is remembered as “a much-loved member of the Qantas cabin crew community in Brisbane and Sydney.”
“He had a passion for travel, life, his family and friends and the customers that he served,” she said.
“This is an incredibly sad time for those who worked alongside [Luke].
“He will be deeply missed. The whole team at Qantas are thinking of Luke and Jesse’s loved ones.”
Luke’s co-workers also shared moving tributes to the “beacon of sunshine” online.
“He was not just a close friend; he was a source of inspiration, a constant reminder of the beauty in life,” one fellow flight attendant wrote.
“Your laughter was infectious to everyone around you … your passing leaves a void that words can hardly express.”
Fellow crew member Brooke Walters recalled Luke’s dedication to his job on one of his last flights, from Sydney to Singapore just three weeks ago.
She told the Sydney Morning Herald Luke spent the entire eight-hour flight comforting a passenger suffering from dementia and the man’s wife.
“Luke took it upon himself to care for them constantly,” she recalled.
Luke’s partner, Jesse Baird, was a former 10 presenter and AFL umpire.
The AFL is also working with his loved ones on a tribute in the coming weeks.
‘This will be a more sombre Parade’
A community vigil for the murdered Sydney couple is on Friday night at Green Park in Darlinghurst.
Ahead of the parade, Mardi Gras co-chair Brandon Bear said the organisation is working with the community on tributes to the men.
Brandon said Mardi Gras has “always been a lot of things to a lot of people” and there have been situations in the past “where we’ve come together to celebrate but also come together to mourn, to create change”.
“For some people this will be a more sombre event. For some people they might choose to sit this one out,” he said on Friday.
“We’re working with the community and we know our partners are working to use their parade floats to talk to the lives and the memory of these young men.”

Essential Considerations for Studying Abroad: What You Must Know Before Embarking on Your Educational Adventure
GlobEDwise offers reviews to help students make informed decisions about studying in countries like the US, UK, Canada, or Australia. If you have any specific questions or need assistance with studying abroad planning, feel free to ask!
Choosing the best study abroad destination is a significant decision for college students, offering the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture while pursuing their education. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a study-abroad destination:
Academic Reputation: Look for destinations with reputable universities or colleges offering programs relevant to your field of study. Consider factors like faculty expertise, research opportunities, and accreditation.
Cultural Experience: Choose a destination that offers a rich cultural experience. This could include exploring historical sites, sampling local cuisine, attending cultural events, and interacting with locals.
Language: Consider whether you want to study in a country where you speak the language fluently or if you're interested in learning a new language. Studying in a non-native language can be a rewarding challenge but may require additional preparation.
Cost of Living: Research the cost of living in potential destinations, including housing, food, transportation, and entertainment. Compare these expenses to your budget and explore scholarship opportunities or financial aid.
Safety and Security: Prioritize destinations with a reputation for safety and security, especially for international students. Research crime rates, healthcare accessibility, and the overall stability of the region.
Career Opportunities: Consider how studying abroad can enhance your career prospects. Look for destinations with internship or job opportunities in your field, as well as strong alumni networks or connections to potential employers.
Location: Decide whether you prefer a bustling urban environment, a tranquil rural setting, or something in between. Consider proximity to travel opportunities within the region and ease of transportation.
Support Services: Look for study-abroad programs or universities that offer comprehensive support services for international students, including orientation programs, academic advising, housing assistance, and cultural integration support.
Based on these factors, some popular study-abroad destinations for college students include:
United Kingdom: Renowned for its prestigious universities, vibrant culture, and historic landmarks, the UK offers diverse academic opportunities in cities like London, Edinburgh, and Manchester.
Italy: With its rich history, art, and cuisine, Italy is a top choice for students interested in the humanities, architecture, fashion, and culinary arts. Cities like Rome, Florence, and Milan are popular study destinations.
Australia: Known for its high-quality education system, stunning landscapes, and laid-back lifestyle, Australia attracts students from around the world. Major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane offer a range of academic programs and outdoor activities.
Japan: Renowned for its technological innovation, traditional culture, and hospitality, Japan is an intriguing study destination for students interested in science, engineering, language, and culture. Cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka offer modern amenities alongside historical sites.
Canada: With its welcoming environment, multicultural cities, and natural beauty, Canada is a popular choice for international students. Cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal boast world-class universities and diverse communities.
Ultimately, the best study-abroad destination will depend on your academic goals, personal interests, and preferences. Research each potential destination thoroughly and consider reaching out to current or former study-abroad students for firsthand insights and advice.

Canada vs. Australia for Students: Where Should You Study in 2024?
Tumblr media
As the academic landscape continues to evolve, choosing the right destination for your studies becomes a critical decision. In 2024, two prominent contenders for international students are Canada and Australia. Both countries boast world-class education systems, stunning landscapes, and diverse cultures. This article aims to help you navigate the decision-making process, weighing the pros and cons of studying in Canada versus Australia.
Academic Excellence
Canada vs Australia For Students are home to some of the finest universities globally, each with its unique strengths. Canada is renowned for institutions like the University of Toronto and McGill University, while Australia boasts academic giants such as the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University. When deciding where to study, consider the specific programs, faculty, and research opportunities that align with your academic goals.
Cost of Education and Living
The financial aspect of studying abroad is a crucial consideration. In terms of tuition fees, both Canada and Australia offer competitive rates. However, when factoring in living expenses, a nuanced picture emerges. Canada generally has a slightly lower cost of living than Australia, which can impact your overall budget significantly. Take into account accommodation, transportation, and daily expenses to make an informed decision based on your financial capacity.
Work Opportunities
For many international students, part-time work is a vital component of their overseas experience. Both Canada and Australia permit students to work part-time during their studies. Canada allows up to 20 hours per week during the academic session and full-time during scheduled breaks. Australia follows a similar structure, allowing part-time work during the academic session and unrestricted hours during semester breaks. Research the job market in your field of study and the availability of part-time opportunities when evaluating potential study destinations.
Post-Graduation Work Opportunities
Considering the post-graduation scenario is essential for planning your future. Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) enables graduates to work in the country for up to three years after completing a program of study. This serves as a valuable pathway to gaining Canadian work experience and, in some cases, permanent residency. Australia, too, offers post-graduation work options through the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), allowing graduates to work and live in the country temporarily. Understanding the post-graduation work policies in both countries is crucial for aligning your academic journey with your career aspirations.
Quality of Life and Cultural Experience
Beyond academics and work opportunities, the quality of life and cultural experience are integral aspects of your decision. Canada and Australia, while sharing a commitment to diversity and inclusivity, differ in terms of climate, lifestyle, and cultural nuances. Canada's cities like Toronto and Montreal offer a vibrant urban lifestyle, while Australia's Sydney and Melbourne blend urban sophistication with a laid-back atmosphere. Consider the lifestyle that resonates with you and the cultural experiences you hope to encounter during your time abroad.
Language and Communication
Language plays a pivotal role in your overseas experience. English is the primary language in both Canada and Australia, but nuances in accents and colloquialisms exist. Consider which accent and communication style you find more comfortable and conducive to your learning experience. Both countries' diverse populations provide opportunities to engage with people from various cultural backgrounds, enriching your language skills and cross-cultural understanding.
Conclusion
Choosing between Canada vs Australia For Students in 2024 is a significant decision that requires thoughtful consideration. Both countries offer exceptional educational opportunities, diverse cultures, and pathways to post-graduation success. Your decision should align with your academic goals, budget, work opportunities, and the type of lifestyle and cultural experiences you desire. By weighing these factors, you can embark on a fulfilling academic journey that not only enriches your education but also broadens your horizons in a global context.

What is Comprehensive Australian General Practice?
Comprehensive Australian General Practice is a holistic approach to healthcare, where the GP serves as a pivotal figure, overseeing both preventative and curative patient management.
As GPs, we are entrusted with various responsibilities including early detection and intervention of medical conditions, managing chronic illnesses, and providing health education.
We work in diverse settings - from urban clinics to remote rural practices - thus gaining vast experience across the spectrum of illness stages. The time taken by GPiT (General Practitioner in Training) for gaining practical exposure varies depending on individual capabilities and situational factors.
Our role ties into broader competencies that ensure quality healthcare for all Australians; it's not simply about treating individuals but enhancing community wellbeing at large.
youtube
Definition and principles
We need to talk about the Comprehensive Australian General Practice. It sets rules for training doctors in Australia. This plan needs a lot of science learning and facts. Doctors use this knowledge in places where people get care.
It tells us how to act as doctors in Australia. We must give top-notch care that doesn't stop, no matter their age or sickness. The code of conduct shows right behavior for doctors here.
Being a general practitioner (GP) means you are vital to many people's health. There are strict ethical and professional conduct standards from the code of conduct we have to meet.
Our job also includes making guides easy for groups so they can create clinical practice guidelines in Australia.
GP's responsibilities
As GPs, our duties are vast. We take care of people's health across their life span. This means we treat people of all ages, both male and female, with many different types of health issues.
It is our job to provide good medical practice in line with Australia's code of conduct. Our skills must always meet high standards to ensure the best for patients.
Another crucial task we perform is delivering primary healthcare. We never turn away from a patient needing help at any time or any place within Australia! Also, as part of our role, we promote healthy livingamong individuals and communities alike.
Lastly, it’s us who are often first in line for assessing patients in their home or clinical settings when they fall ill or need advice on managing long-term illnesses such as diabetes or asthma.
Continuous improvements form an integral part of what we do every day so that the care offered by medical centres and practices remains top-notch. Hence, gaining general practice accreditation by continuous training becomes imperative for us.
General practice settings
General practices are found in many places. They are in cities and small towns, busy suburbs and quiet rural areas. Every spot has its own needs. This makes general practice varied and exciting.
In our settings, we use science-based medicine to help people stay well. We work with people of all ages, from babies to old folks. We look after them over the long term – not just for one visit when they're sick.
In doing so, we make sure health care reaches everyone in Australia's wide range of cultures.
Relation to general practice competencies
We need to follow some rules if we want to do our work well. One of these is the Prescribing Competencies Framework. This gives us rules about when and how to prescribe medicine. It comes from NPS MedicineWise.
It's not just doctors who need to know this. The whole team at a general practice should understand it too. That way, everyone can give the best care possible. There are guides that can help nurses in practices like ours.
But there's something else too - a code of conduct named Good Medical Practice. This tells all doctors what they must do if they want to practice medicine in Australia like us.
Time required for GPiT to gain practice experience
To gain practice experience, a GPiT needs time. It is not a quick process. It takes about three to four years. The time can be more if you go part-time.
In these years, GPiTs learn and grow in real care settings. They deal with patients of all ages and health issues under an expert's watch. This helps them build medical knowledge and skills.
Gaining hands-on patient care is key for a GPiT. These years are when they become good at diagnosing conditions and planning treatments. At the same time, they also master soft skills like talking with kindness and respect to their patients.
Relevance to Medical Training and Pathways
Several pathways are available for medical training in Australia, each with their own requirements and outcomes; these include the Vocational Training Pathway, General Practice Experience pathway, and Specialist pathway.
youtube
Vocational Training Pathway
Becoming a doctor in Australia includes a Vocational Training Pathway. This pathway lasts for three years if done full-time. If you can only do part-time, don't worry. You will have the same training, but it will take longer to finish.
The Vocational Training comes after medical school, internship and residency. Once finished with this pathway, doctors then move to specialty training programs or fellowships. The first year of Vocational Training even includes 12 months in a hospital setting!
Throughout your time on this path, you can access an Australian general practice guide. This guide is comprehensive and offers help specific to vocational training.
General Practice Experience (GPE) pathway
The General Practice Experience (GPE) pathway is great for doctors like us. It sees the worth in skills and knowledge we get from work experience. This can come from both here in Australia and overseas too.
The GPE pathway shows medical grads they can have a rewarding career in general practice.
This path is built on flexibility, which helps us to fit training around life's needs. The Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program gives training for registrars wanting to become specialist General Practitioners.
You don't have to put everything else on hold either - the AGPT program lets you study full time or part time.
We also gather a sigh of relief knowing that our journey won't put us under financial stress with this program being funded by our very own Australian government. In short, the GPE pathway leads to many bright opportunities in general practice while letting us manage how and when we train.
Specialist pathway
The Specialist pathway is a key route for international medical graduates (IMGs). This trail helps IMGs to show they can match up to the skills of Australian-trained doctors. To use this path, foreign-trained expert GPs need to check their overseas medical degrees.
In other words, these IMGs must make sure Australia accepts their old training.
Not every doctor needs this path. It is just for those who want to work as specialists in Australia. One main choice for specialist schooling in our country is the Australian General Practice Training Program.
This program lets doctors learn more about their special field of medicine and get better at it.
Approved Medical Deputising Services
Approved Medical Deputising Services (AMDS) is a good chance for doctors in Australia not tied to a vocation yet. It allows them to learn from real-life practice. AMDS is part of the approved 3GA programs.
This makes it easy for these doctors to get much-needed experience.
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, or RACGP, sets rules for after-hours and medical deputising services. This ensures that all healthcare given is safe and high-quality.
The AMDS program helps fill in gaps where there are fewer healthcare workers, especially rural areas in Australia.
Every doctor or service taking part in the AMDS program has clear rules they must follow. These guidelines make sure everyone knows their job well and can do their best work. If you're a doctor not bound by a particular vocation yet, the AMDS program is an important pathway for you to gain needed training in general practice.
Comparability ratings
We use comparability ratings for doctors who have trained outside Australia. These ratings check how closely a doctor's skills match those of a Australian-trained specialist. The right Medical College looks at the training and skills of each doctor applying to work here in Australia.
Comparability assessment is a big part of your rating. This checks how well you measure against an Australian-trained general medical expert. It looks over your training, exams, past work, recent practice and ongoing learning.
Remember, it is very important to get your professional skills checked by the correct Medical College. They make sure you meet the standards needed for an Australian-trained specialist before you can start working here in Australia.
Requirements for Practicing Medicine in Australia
To practice medicine in Australia, you must meet several requirements including obtaining a proper medical licensure, passing the Australian Medical Council exams and fulfilling the prescribed timeframe for completion.
youtube
Medical licensure
To work as a doctor in Australia, you need a medical licence. It's the law here. The Medical Board of Australia gives out these licenses. They make sure all doctors follow good medical practice principles.
You can get your licence through one of four paths. This is great news for doctors from other places who want to work here! The Australian Medical Council (AMC) helps with this too.
AMC works together with ECFMG to look at the skills and training of doctors from other places.
Getting your license takes some steps but it is worth it to be able to practice medicine in Australia! It means we can help people and do what we love: care for our patients' health.
AMC exams and requirements
To start practice in Australia, doctors must pass AMC exams. These are tests set by the Australian Medical Council (AMC). The aim is to check if doctors have the right skills and knowledge.
So, getting a good score on these AMC exams is very important.
There are two parts in this test. First, one needs to crack an MCQ exam. It's short for Multiple Choice Question exam. After that comes the clinical examination part having 16 different sections.
To sit for this second test, you should have passed the first one.
The book "AMC Handbook of Clinical Assessment" helps a lot in preparations for these tests. It tells what standards they expect from us as medical professionals in Australia.
Timeframe for completion
Becoming a doctor takes time. You will first finish Year 12 and get your bachelor's degree. This can take three to five years after high school. Next, you must go to medical school for four more years.
After that, you'll need to do an internship at an approved place for one year. If you come from another country and want to be a doctor in Australia, it is different again. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must work under watchful eyes for 12 months on the Standard pathway.

You’ve Graduated With a Degree From an Australian University. What’s Next?
Australia is one of the most sought-after study-abroad destinations for international students, and this has led to many applying for an Australian PR after completing their studies.
Tumblr media
The country boasts world-class universities and a high-quality education system. According to the QS World University Rankings 2023, seven Australian Universities have been ranked under the top 100.
This includes The University of Melbourne, Australian National University and The University of Sydney.
Currently, there are 619,371 international students in Australia its 41 universities. Many are drawn here with the hope of staying on after graduating and it’s no surprise why.
An Australian degree can lead to many opportunities — and at the top of this list is the kind of jobs you can get here.
Why So Many International Students Want to Become Australian PRs
Australia’s unemployment rate has consistently remained lower than many other developed countries, and in some regions, it’s even lower than the national average, creating a favourable job market for international graduates.
It’s not just the quantity of jobs available here that’s attracting people from all over the world, but the quality of the jobs available too.
As Australia is known for its strong focus on research and innovation, this makes it a hub for various fields of study.
In August 2023, the country’s top three exports are:
Metalliferous ores and metal scrap (45.1 billion Australian dollars)
Crude fertilizers and crude minerals (A$37.1b)
Coal, coke and briquettes (A$20.2b)
Meat and meat preparations (A$15.5b)
Vegetables and fruit (A$14.2b)
When you’re not carving a career in the world’s #13 economy (according to GDP data in 2021), there’s plenty of natural beauty and vibrant cities to explore.
The famous Australian lifestyle is famous for a reason.
From the iconic Sydney Opera House to the breathtaking landscapes, like the Great Barrier Reef and the Australian Outback, you’ll find endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.
Like any other job-hunting process, it’s not a walk in the park.
Challenges remain, especially related to citizenship and visa status, as detailed by Nathan Lee, the founder of Stint, an online community and platform that aims to help international students in Australia find a fulfilling career.
Do you need a visa to study in Australia?
Long story short, like most countries, you need a visa to study in Australia. Applying for a visa to Australia can be quite daunting, especially if you are new to the process.
There are many visa options, each with its own requirements, which can feel overwhelming.
You’ll need to choose the right visa category that matches your purpose, whether studying or working.
The complexity of the Australian visa system can make it challenging to determine which visa is the best fit for your individual circumstances.
The visa application process often involves extensive documentation, and missing even a single requirement can lead to delays or rejection.
You’ll need to gather documents about your identity, financial capacity, health, character, etc. This, on top of the visa application fees and waiting time, can add to the stress.
So, what visa will be best for you?
Australian visa for international students
Your bags are packed, and you are ready to embark on your exciting journey to study in Australia for the first time. But before you board that flight, the first important step is getting the right visa.
For most international students, the most common visa is the Student Visa (Subclass 500). This visa lets you stay in Australia for the duration of your course, and it also allows you to work a certain number of hours per week during your studies.
The student visa fees start from A$650 per visa application. To apply, you can go through the Australian immigration website or an education agent. However, the latter will come with a fee.
Here’s what you need you will need to prepare to apply for a visa:
Letter of offer
Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE): A document that will be issued by your education provider that verifies your enrolment in a specific course
English language proficiency: Citizenship from an English-speaking country or IELTS/TOEFL  scores.
Academic qualifications
Health and Character requirements – additional forms required
Proof of insurance through Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
Proof of financial stability – resources to cover return airfare, tuition costs, and a total of A$18,610 per year must be documented. Loans, parent financial history, and bank accounts are considered as evidence.
While the Student Visa allows some work, it’s important to follow the work restrictions, ensuring your primary focus remains on your studies.
Based on your (subclass 500) visa, you are typically allowed to work a maximum of 48 hours per fortnight during your semester and unlimited hours during study breaks.
Staying in Australia after graduation
The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) is an opportunity for international students who have completed their postgraduate studies in Australia.
Tumblr media
This visa allows you to remain in the country temporarily after you’ve finished your course to gain valuable work experience and enhance your skills.
The Subclass 485 visa has two streams: Graduate Work and Post-Study Work streams.
The Graduate Work stream is available to those with qualifications in specific skilled occupations, making it a stepping stone for those looking to launch their careers in Australia.
The Post-Study Work stream is especially beneficial for those who have earned higher education degrees like a master’s or a doctorate, allowing them to stay for an extended period, up to four years, and explore job opportunities in various fields.
The Subclass 485 visa has become increasingly popular among international students in Australia.
In January 2022, the government made a decision to help international students in Australia. They allowed students to work more hours than usual (40 hours per fortnight) to address a shortage of workers in the country. But this changed on June 30.
In July 2023, new rules came about. All international students are now allowed to work up to 48 hours per fortnight. That’s more hours for everyone, no matter when they start their studies.
More good news came with this. Now, once you finish your studies, you can stay and work in Australia longer.
Before, if you had a bachelor’s degree, you could stay for two years after finishing your course. If you had a master’s, it was three years; for PhD students, it was four years.
But since July 1, 2023, you can get an extra two years to work after your studies, especially if you work in regional areas. This means you have more opportunities to gain skills and experience in Australia.
Australian PR for international students
Obtaining an Australian Permanent Residency (PR) as an international student is a goal many aspire to achieve.
Australian PR offers numerous benefits, including access to healthcare, social security, and the opportunity to live, work, and study anywhere in the country.
To begin your journey towards an Australian PR, you’ll usually need to choose the right visa pathway.
For many international students, this involves first completing a postgraduate degree in Australia. After your studies, you might be eligible for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), which allows you to work and gain valuable experience in Australia.
Gaining local work experience is often a critical step in your Australian PR journey, as it can boost your points when applying for skilled migration visas.
The General Skilled Migration (GSM) programme is a popular way for international students to secure Australian PR. You’ll need to meet the points-based system, which assesses factors like your age, qualifications, work experience, and English language proficiency to qualify.
Australia welcomes thousands of international students each year into its skilled migration programme, leading to successful PR applications.
Your Australian education can be a significant advantage when applying for PR, as the country values the skills and knowledge gained from its institutions.

Remember that while it may require effort and patience, Australian PR is a real possibility for international students who have studied in the country and wish to call Australia their permanent home.
Is it easy to get an Australian PR?
While many dream of getting an Australian PR, it isn’t always easy.
In fact, a recent report from the Grattan Institute has shed light on the challenges international graduates face in Australia when it comes to gaining a PR and pursuing their chosen careers.
The report emphasises that encouraging international graduates to remain in Australia and struggle to secure permanent residency doesn’t benefit anyone.
It points out that only about half of international students in Australia manage to find full-time employment, and many end up in low-skilled jobs with low earnings.
Less than one-third of temporary graduate visa holders transition to permanent residency when their visas expire, a significant drop from two-thirds in 2014.
It was found that some graduates return to further studies to extend their stay in Australia.
As a result, the number of temporary graduate visa-holders is expected to double by 2030, potentially leaving more graduates in what is called “visa limbo.”
To avoid this, a number of measures to address these challenges, including reducing the duration of post-study work visas, raising English language requirements, and limiting temporary graduate visas to younger individuals, have been suggested.
Grattan Institute also suggests creating a new “Exceptionally Talented Graduate” visa and providing more support for international graduates pursuing their careers in Australia.
