If you’re trans and tucking or binding is not giving you the happiness and relief you thought it would or should, you’re not the only one. For many trans people those things alleviate dysphoria, give euphoria, and/or help with gender presentation, but it’s not something that happens with everyone, and you shouldn’t be expected to do them and like them.

If you wouldn’t call a black person with albinism a white person because of their skin color why would you call a biological man or woman with chromosomal differences, variation in their genitalia or even hormone disorders as “queer” or included in the gay community? The term intersex is an umbrella term that denotes differences in sex hormones, internal or external genitalia, or chromosomes. These are disorders of sex. Even in individuals with true gonadal intersex traits, they will have either male or female chromosomes. To my knowledge there has never been a human born with both a chromosomal variant as well as internal and external genital variants that cannot be determined to be male or female. Every person born is either male or female. Having these conditions does not make a person something other than male or female. A woman being born without a uterus/ovaries, clitoromegaly (an enlarged clitoris), or some chromosomal mutation doesn’t make her any less of a woman. It doesn’t surprise me that TRAs will use these conditions to justify someone with a completely male or female body saying that they are or transitioning to the other sex. Intersex people are valid men and women.

Proposing/requesting some new intersex terminology
In my talking and thinking about intersex and intersex studies, I've found a desire to put names some of the concepts and groups of people that are out there. Here's what I've come up with, and would like feedback. 💛
Alternate language for medical/identity models
Intermedicalist: referring to a person or ideas which support the pathologization of intersex. Alternate language for what Costello (2016) refers to as the medical/disorder model of intersex. Intended as a parallel with transmedicalist.
Interliberationist: an intersex person who supports intersex liberation, in contrast to intermedicalism. Alternate language for what Costello (2016) refers to the identity framework of intersex; the view of intersex as a social identity, and intersex people in need of liberation from pathologization and presumptions about sex/gender norms.
Language for how intersex people relate to gender
Extergender. An intersex person who is not intergender, i.e. their gender does not feel affected by being intersex.
Language for how intersex people do or do not relate to queerness
Interqueer: an intersex person who sees their intersexness as being queer 🌈
Ipsoqueer: an intersex person whose queerness comes solely from being intersex; they are heterosexual, cis/ipsogender, etc. A subtype of interqueer.
Ulterqueer: an intersex person who understands their intersexness as queer and is also queer in other ways (sexual orientation, gender identity, etc). A subtype of interqueer.
Interseparate: an intersex person who rejects the idea that being intersex makes them queer. Opposite of interqueer.
Interconforming an intersex person who disidentifies with queerness on all axes (they are hetero, cis/ipsogender, etc). A subtype of interseparate.
Internormative: an intersex person who rejects that being intersex makes them queer, but they are queer in other ways. A subtype of interseparate. Chosen as parallel to homonormativity and transnormativity.
In terms of feedback: these are all concepts I want names for, but other than intermedicalist & interliberationist I feel pretty tentative/uncertain about what I've come up with. If you have ideas for improvements please let me know! 🤗
I'm a little worried that ipsoqueer and ulterqueer would lead to confusion with ipsogender and ultergender but also couldn't think of anything better!
EDITS: - 2023-11-27: changed "interstraight" to "interseparate", TY to anon who suggested the change. 🏳️‍⚧️

Sexual orientation in intersex people (Carpenter, 2016)
Tumblr media
Noticed this in revisiting this summary of a survey of intersex people from Australia in 2016. We are way more likely to be non-heterosexual than the general population. They didn't take data on people's genders, just their official sex, but in their survey population they did have 8% trans people - again higher than general population.
I know in "Sex and Gender 101" we tend to make a big deal that intersex people can have any sexual orientation and can have any gender.
But I think it's also worth highlighting that being intersex, on a population level, does have effects on gender and sexual orientation. We're way less likely to be hetero. We're way more likely to be genderqueer. You really can't neatly detach intersex from other aspects of queerness - it affects so much of our lives.

Interandrogyne
"Interandrogyne - A form of Androgyne that is connected or influenced by one’s intersexuality. A specific intergender. Similar to Duogender and not to be confused with Interandrogynous." - term originally coined by @/intersexfairy (unsure if he is the coiner but that post looks like the earliest use of the term I could find).
I saw this term and couldn't find a flag for it so I attempted to make one of my own.

Intergenderflux
Intergenderflux
Tumblr media
ID: seven horizontal stripes, white ring in the center of flag. Colors of stripes, from inner to outermost: dark yellow, yellow, purple, dark purple. End ID
Imagine something like girlflux, and apply the concept to intergender. Apparently hasn't been coined yet, so I took it upon myself. Flag colors are based off of the purple and yellow intergender flag (which is probably very obvious).

i've made posts about it before, but don't force someone into the nonbinary umbrella if they don't feel comfortable with it. i'm intersex. i never belonged inside, around, or near that binary to begin with. it never applied to me at all, whatsoever. as a child i wasn't viewed as male, female, both or nothing. i wasn't considered as coming even close to that binary, and i don't feel like i'm identifying as something that's in opposition or "outside of" to a binary i don't fit into.
and furthermore, i have fought for my transition as an intersex person to be perceived as both male AND female. i don't identify as something "else" or 'other". i don't identify as ""binary"" male or female, but nonbinary doesn't sit well with me. genderqueer, xenogender, and bigender are my terms. my gender experience is unique to myself and myself alone. please respect that every "non traditional" identity can have its own name and doesn't need to be put into boxes they don't belong in.

made some flags for intersex cuspers
Left to right:
Cuspfem, cuspfemmasc, and cuspmasc intersex flags
Just when you're on the cusp of being trans fem/femmasc/masc but aren't quite due to being intersex (aka literally me). These technically fall under the intercusper umbrella but I didn't model them off that flag color wise (I instead used Vibes).
@interarchive for archiving purposes ,
this is NOT a mogai blog!! don't follow me if you want more mogai stuff!!!! this is a very rare occurrence where I post flags here, ok?!!!?!!!?!

Happy trans day of visibility to those who celebrate <3
Tumblr media
Remember that you're valid no matter what others say. No matter how far along in your transition you are (if you want to transition at all). No matter if you pass in public.
Today is a day to see you, to celebrate your existence. You can use whatever pronouns you like, you can speak about being trans however much you feel comfortable speaking, you have every right to live a happy fulfilling life and today is a day to remind you of this.

Hey look we're just gonna say transintersex* people dni. They make us uncomfy
*endosex people transitioning to intersex. We are also including endosex people who identify as Intergender (specifically the intersex definition)
*this does NOT mean people who are both intersex and trans. We are intersex and trans and we love people like us!

Interneutral flag
Tumblr media
I just realized there isn't a flag for interneutral (aka interneu) gender expression, so have created this one following the scheme created by @momma-mogai-sphinx (now @mogaimom) for the other intersex-specific gender expressions and using green since it is the colour for gender-neutral.
Interneutral is a gender expression that is the combination of gender neutrality and being inter-expressive (i.e. a gender expression that is indicative & reflective of being intersex/intergender.)

Intersex mood: having a fucking panic attack trying to figure out what the hell to say when someone asks what you're assigned at birth because the truth is socially unacceptable at best, but if you lie and pick one of two everyone projects a whole bunch of biosex bullshit assumptions and privileges AND automatically saying you must be trans even if you also don't quite fit there.
Just don't ask!!!!!!
