"No tree survives alone in the forest. When one tree falls ill, we all send food. For if one tree dies, the canopy is broken."

Tree-Persons
I've been thinking a lot about humanity's kinship with trees in a Heathen animist context recently. For example, in one creation myth the first humans are made from two trees, and there are over 600 recorded kennings for people that include comparing humans to trees. This has made me think about trees as our cousins and what that means for our relations with them.
To help explore these ideas, I drew this picture and I’m really proud of the result. The runes around the outside say “for good relations with all our kin, human and non-human.”

"Human history can be viewed as a shared dawning awareness that we are members of a larger ecosystem. Initially our loyalties were to ourselves and our immediate family, next, to bands of wandering hunter-gatherers, then to tribes, small settlements, city-states, and nations.
Now we have broadened the circle of those we love. We have organized ourselves into super-powers... larger groups of people from divergent ethnic and cultural backgrounds working in some sense together... surely a humanizing and character building experience.
But if we are to survive much longer on this planet, our loyalties must be broadened further, to include the whole of humanity and the whole of planet Earth. Many of those who run our nations will find this idea unpleasant. They will fear the loss of power. We will hear much about treason and disloyalty. Rich nation-states will have to share their wealth with poor ones. But the choice, as H. G. Wells once said, is clearly... the universe or nothing."

I see gods in the trees. I see gods in the clouds. I see gods in the dirt. I see gods in the stars. Everything around us is full of gods. Not all of them have names, but all of them are important.
Every day I'm thankful to these nameless gods that take part of my life.

Try to understand what I am saying: everything is dependent on everything else, everything is connected, nothing is separate. Therefore everything is going in the only way it can go. If people were different everything would be different. They are what they are, so everything is as it is.

The compassion we experienced together will enable each one of us to move closer to understanding diversity rather than being threatened by it. I believe that women are deeply affecting the critical mass. As each one of us heals our own feminine and masculine nature we change the consciousness on the planet from one of addiction to suffering, conflict, and domination to a consciousness that recognizes the need for affiliation, healing, balance, and inter-being. Women need to breathe more knowledge, more prajna, into the world to restore the imbalance. We are a pilgrim people; we are on a journey together to learn how to honor and preserve the dignity of all life forms seen and unseen; therein lies our heroic power.

Bohm believes that our almost universal tendency to fragment the world and ignore the dynamic interconnectedness of all things is responsible for many of our problems, not only in science but in our lives and our society as well. For instance, we believe we can extract the valuable parts of the earth without affecting the whole. We believe it is possible to treat parts of our body and not be concerned with the whole. We believe we can deal with various problems in our society, such as crime, poverty, and drug addiction, without addressing the problems in our society as a whole, and so on. In his writings Bohm argues passionately that our current way of fragmenting the world into parts not only doesn't work, but may even lead to our extinction. -Michael Talbot, The Holographic Universe

Breathing in, my breath grows deep - breathing out, my breath goes slow
"Explore the profound mindfulness practice of 'Breathing in, my breath grows deep; breathing out, my breath goes slow.' Inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings, this simple yet transformative exercise unites body and mind, cultivates calm, and deepens our understanding of life's impermanence and interconnectedness. A gateway to the richness of the present moment is but a breath away."
The mindfulness exercise, “Breathing in, my breath grows deep; breathing out, my breath goes slow,” is a simple yet profound practice inspired by the teachings of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village tradition. It taps into the natural rhythm of our bodies and minds, serving as a gateway to deeper understanding and presence. As you breathe in, you consciously invite your breath to…
