Low level/continuous pain tips for writing
Want to avoid the action movie effect and make your character's injuries have realistic lasting impacts? Have a sick character you're using as hurt/comfort fodder? Everyone has tips for how to write Dramatic Intense Agony, but the smaller human details of lasting or low-level discomfort are rarely written in. Here are a few pain mannerisms I like to use as reference:
General
Continuously gritted teeth (may cause headaches or additional jaw pain over time)
Irritability, increased sensitivity to lights, sounds, etc
Repetitive movements (fidgeting, unable to sit still, slight rocking or other habitual movement to self-soothe)
Soft groaning or whimpering, when pain increases or when others aren't around
Heavier breathing, panting, may be deeper or shallower than normal
Moving less quickly, resistant to unnecessary movement
Itching in the case of healing wounds
Subconsciously hunching around the pain (eg. slumped shoulders or bad posture for gut pain)
Using a hand to steady themself when walking past walls, counters, etc (also applies to illness)
Narration-wise: may not notice the pain was there until it's gone because they got so used to it, or may not realize how bad it was until it gets better
May stop mentioning it outright to other people unless they specifically ask or the pain increases
Limb pain
Subtly leaning on surfaces whenever possible to take weight off foot/leg pain
Rubbing sore spots while thinking or resting
Wincing and switching to using other limb frequently (new/forgettable pain) or developed habit of using non dominant limb for tasks (constant/long term pain)
Propping leg up when sitting to reduce inflammation
Holding arm closer to body/moving it less
Moving differently to avoid bending joints (eg. bending at the waist instead of the knees to pick something up)
Nausea/fever/non-pain discomfort
Many of the same things as above (groaning, leaning, differences in movement)
May avoid sudden movements or turning head for nausea
Urge to press up against cold surfaces for fever
Glazed eyes, fixed stare, may take longer to process words or get their attention
Shivering, shaking, loss of fine motor control
If you have any more details that you personally use to bring characters to life in these situations, I'd love to hear them! I'm always looking for ways to make my guys suffer more write people with more realism :)

when katniss and peeta sit down for their first breakfast in the capitol, suzanne hints of peeta's genuine feelings for katniss. in response to katniss's claim that sponsors in the capitol will not view her as anything special, peeta looks at haymitch and delivers the iconic "she has no idea. the effect she can have" line (thg, 91).
and, according to peeta, this is the same effect that makes people gravitate to katniss as a revolutionary figure. this is the effect that makes oppressed people believe that their sacrifices in revolting can ultimately lead to progress (mj, 277).
but, to most people, they just see this effect that katniss has on other people as a tool to utilize and exploit for their own goals.
in the capitol, katniss's effect was powerful because of the added drama and entertainment it would bring to the sponsors. and peeta's declaration of love only made her more desirable (thg, 135).
and even gale, when katniss suggests running away from snow instead of staying and fighting for the rebellion, is frustrated with katniss because of the benefit she could bring to the rebellion if she stayed (cf, 29).
and plutarch loves to rave about the effect that having katniss run around in the mockingjay suit has on the people in the districts (mj, 220).
and after coin realizes that she might not be able to control katniss, and subsequently the effect that she has on the masses, katniss becomes a threat to her (mj, 226). and at that point, the only way for katniss's effect to be useful is to turn katniss into a martyr (mj, 227).
so, this effect that peeta brings up is often used against katniss. because at the end of the day, most of the people in the series only care about her to the extent that she can help them reach their objectives.
after all, they are all still working within the transactional framework that influences every relationship in panem. including katniss's relationship to rebel leaders. plutarch and coin guarantee peeta will be safe from punishment. katniss lets them use her as the mockingjay (mj, 38). and once again, katniss's love is used to exploit her.
and that is why peeta is so special to katniss. because he is the only person who never used her. he just gave and gave and gave to her. and did not expect anything back from her.
because he simply loves her.
and the more i read the books, the more i feel like the bread scene and the primrose scene are one and the same. two sides of the same coin.
in both scenes, katniss has been abandoned by everyone. her mother, the person who should be caring for her, is absent (thg, 8; mj, 322). even with greasy sae, katniss is unsure if she is checking in on her just because she is being paid to (mj, 323).
she no longer had her father to trade for her in the hob (thg, 91). therefore, she no longer had anything of value to others. and the capitol just wants her out of the way after the war (mj, 321). after being used for everything she was, katniss has lost all of the effect that made her desirable to everyone else.
all and all, katniss is utterly alone. and nothing truly is keeping her from dying (thg, 30; mj, 323).
but then he appears before her. willing to be beaten if it means that he can give her two loaves of bread that will grant her the nourishment to bring her back to life (thg, 30). and willing to go to the woods to get the primrose that will give her the added life to coax her out of a depression (mj, 325).
because peeta was right when he said that katniss had an effect on people. and she had an effect on him. because she really did. but he never saw that effect they way that other people did.
because peeta did not see katniss as 'the mockingjay.' not really. the effect that he noticed in her bloomed the moment her voice reached his ears. long before anyone else even noticed. he only saw katniss as a songbird that continuously blessed the lives around her. including his.
and he would do anything to keep his precious songbird's tune from dying out.

booktok cannot handle unfriendly or emotionally complex female characters. show them a woman who’s a little problematic and they start shaking and shitting themselves. women can be either be martyrs or victims, anything else and ppl short circuit. men can be fucked up emotionally manipulative mass murders but if women have one unpalatable emotion they’re drawn & quartered.
if booktok bitches saw the female characters i liked they would piss blood for a week !!!!

💥Binderary Bind # 3 💥
A collection of 15 stories by @greygerbil.( Highly HIGHLY recommend their fics)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the book title, I chose The Shield,The Spear, The Sword and chose another 14 of their stories (it was a struggle not to include all of them but i got tired of typesetting 😅)
Tumblr media
I made individual title pages for all of them (pic doesnt include all)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did keep the drop caps the same in every story as well as the same line break image (a cute little shield, spear, sword combo i made on canva) to add continuity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried a couple new techniques this bind.
Did my first ever rounded spine as well as some (easy and fake) raised bands. This was heavily inspired by those old traditional leather bound books.
Tumblr media
Progess pic before the faux leather.

DP x DC Prompt:
Summoning circles are more complicated than people give them credit for. They’re a bit like a mix between a thumb print, a name, a phone number, and a recipe; and at the same time, nothing like any of those things.
In reality, most summoning circles in spell books and ancient texts are incomplete, representing only a fraction of a particular spirit’s identity.
A complete circle will actually be a series of different summoning circles, with each concentric ring representing an aspect of the spirit’s identity and having individual requirements and/or offerings needed. Ghosts have an innate awareness of them and are able to draw and describe their requirements from any sort of inward reflection.
Ghosts will often give out incomplete circles as a means of communication and transportation. A single ring of the circle will only open the door, and each ring added makes the pull and connection to the summoner stronger. Ghosts will also sometimes use incomplete circles to mark and monitor their haunts and as a way of claiming territory.
A complete summoning circle will occasionally but inevitably change over time, as parts of the spirit’s identity change.
The circle will always be a closely guarded secret. This is because, much like giving your true name to the fae, giving out your full summoning circle will allow the summoner to not only capture you, but to command and control you.
After Danny was shown Dan’s future where he killed the world, he made Jazz memorize his complete circle and told her to use it if he ever turned evil. She thought he was being ridiculous, but learned the spell when she saw how frightened he had become of himself.
When the summoning circle of the Ghost King was added to his identity, he tried to make her memorize the new circle, only for her to flat out refuse, saying it’s not healthy for him to make these kind of contingencies. They get into a really bad fight and Danny flies off determined to find someone he can trust with his circle should he turn evil.
As he’s flying over his town he feels the slight tug on his consciousness indicating someone is trying to summon the Ghost King. He lets his awareness bleed through the summoning just enough to see that… yup it’s cultists again. At least there’s no sacrifices this time.
He’s about to shrug the summoning off like he has so many others when he suddenly sees someone fighting through the cultists. Oh! Make that several someones.
With a giddy sort of eagerness Danny watches Batman and his sidekicks cut through the crowd of religious fanatics, even taking down a couple that looked like they were using ghost-based magic. He’d always admired the Dark Knight, but seeing him fight in person is something else.
It’s as the hero is tying up the cultists and checking their injuries that a lightbulb goes off in Danny’s head, and, after a moment of steeling his determination, he lets himself be pulled through the summoning circle.
The Bats all tense up as the circle at the center of the room grows brighter, readying themselves for another fight. Danny tries to smile reassuringly as he feels his form materialize, though they likely can’t see it in the bright flash of light that accompanies it.
He frowns when he realizes the summoning had dressed him in his royal armor and cloak, the crown of fire burning above his head and ring of rage glaring from his right hand.
He tries raising his hands in an “I am not a threat,” pose, before realizing it looks exactly like the Box Ghost’s “Beware!” pose. He tucks his hands under his armpits, then awkwardly waves at the group of vigilantes.
“Hi there! Wow that was really cool- Thanks for taking care of these guys for me.”
The vigilantes once again tense up as Danny steps out of the circle towards them. Danny smiles sheepishly.
“I don’t mean to be rude, but I really need to talk to you, Batman.”
Batman steps forward, approaching Danny as he stands just outside the circle, a living shadow that looms larger than life. Still, Danny senses something soften in his gaze as he looks over the teenage Ghost King, stopping just out of reach of him. Danny gazes back at his childhood hero, hoping he’s making the right choice.
“I have a favor to ask of you.”

I fucking loved Paul's feral chihuahua energy in that final fight scene though. He's just going for it. From like, both an acting perspective but also a character thing, he clearly gives zero fucks at that point and it is FASCINATING to see. The image of him staggering around with two knives in him still like "fuck you I fucking won" is so powerful like??? this is a dangerous dude and you SEE that

my stupidest ds9 headcanon to date is that on ds9 there is a secret bookclub, actually... it's just anyone who thinks that the Book Of The Week that Garak and Bashir are reading sounds interesting but doesn't want them to know, because Garak and Bashir's bookclub is a whole psycho-sexual thing no one wants to get involved in. Like it's fine to talk to them about literature, but if Miles mentions anything Julian recently debated with Garak he's gonna end up having to listen to Julian babbling about Garak's Stupid Sexy Brain for half an hour. Sisko once suggested a book to Julian (to read with Garak) and Garak spent a whole trip on the Defiant making pointed references. A young, innocent Jake tried to cheat on his book report just by sitting with Julian and Garak at lunch and to this day he can't look at a copy of Things Fall Apart without having war flashbacks. Rom asked Garak to help him understand better a Bajoran classic Leeta really likes and the day after Julian "accidentally" run into him and "casually" asked about it.
