When “Death to the Author!” poses as “Death of the Author”
The literary theory called "Death of the Author" was developed by French philosopher Roland Barthes in his essay “The Death of the Author” in 1967. The theory declares that the author's intention and biography are not relevant to the interpretation of the text, rather, its meaning is determined by the interpretation of the given reader. This is understood as meaning that an author’s view about their own work is no more or less valid than the interpretations of any given reader.
Tumblr media
However, most often than doesn't, what some calls "Death of the Author" is, in truth, “Death to the Author!” which we shall define as a given reader or viewer's, a fan's desire to legitimately re-imagine and retell the story told by the author. The “Death to the Author!” theory argues that the author has no more or less say in what is part of their story than readers or viewers, that the elements they invented and inserted into the story are must be treated just as integral parts of it as the work of the author. What message and lesson, philosophy and set of values the author intended to communicate through their work of fiction is treated as relevant only to the author, since these things are changing depending on which story element is replaced, altered or "completed" by any given reader or viewer, based on their own ideas, beliefs, views, opinions and values. In its most extreme, the events, characters, arcs and fictional universe of the story are all treated as a reality existing independently from the author, and it's asserted that the author's narrative is only one take on that reality.
Tumblr media
"Death to the Author!" is rarely articulated and in most cases, it's not even conscious, but it's relatively easy to spot it in a fan's toolkit. The most prominent sign of “Death to the Author!” is the fan asserting information about characters’ background, motivations, wants, likes and dislikes, mental and emotional processes, organizations’ history and activity and so on that are simply cannot be derived from, in its most extreme, outright in conflict with the source material itself. And sometimes, when the fact that these alleged informations cannot be located in the source material is revealed, the fan might try to assert that fans have a moral, ethical responsibility to “complete” and to "correct" the work of fiction with said fan-invented content, so it will be authentic, since its absence from the story is simply the result of the author’s moral and ethical failure and ignorance.
Tumblr media
Proponents of “Death to the Author!” often seek to legitimize their theory by claiming, it's deconstructionism. Deconstructionism was created by French philosopher Jacques Derrida. As a literary theory, deconstruction is the close, detailed analysis of texts, so one can find underlying presuppositions that structures of meaning rely on, trying to find clues that give away alternate or contradictory meanings. For example, if a reader or viewer can see how a literary text or a movie intentionally correlates light with "goodness" and darkness with "evil", a reader might begin to question the truth of these correlations. If darkness represents evil in Star Wars, how come that the storm troopers are all white, just like Princess Leia? How come that Luke Skywalker wears black? A deconstructionist recognizes how the text or movie plays with the assumptions readers and viewers make based on connotations of the words and the images they create, enhancing the tension in the story, and undermining the possibility of the text or movie creating only one meaning. Fan "deconstruction" is related to deconstruction, but it's different: it means, fans are looking at tropes and asking, "how this trope would play out in the real life?" However, proponents of “Death to the Author!” are not deconstructionists, they only use the word as a cop-out.
Tumblr media
For them, “deconstruction” is to take parts of the story out of context, filling them up with any meaning that the given reader or viewer wishes them to mean, based on their beliefs, ideas, views and opinions, e.g. "X is a politician. I am convinced that politicians are corrupt. Therefore, X is corrupt, even though the story doesn't explicitly shows it," then putting the modified elements back into the story and referring to them as evidence that would support the “deconstructionist’s” claim, "X is a corrupt character who should be in jail." The “deconstructionist” would argue, all they did was asking the question, “how this story element would play out in the real life” or they were just "reading between the lines" or "found the subtext." It shouldn’t be hard to see that this wasn’t what happened. The only thing that "deconstructionists" and deconstructionists may have in common is the conviction that it's not possible for a movie or a text to create only one meaning with the set of semantic signs they operate with, however, “Death to the Author!” tries to use this notion to escape the burden of proof: if there is no one absolute meaning of a text or a movie, then one can assign to them any meaning they want. This is, however, not what deconstruction means, and those who say “Death to the Author!” are eventually starting to talk about their right to believe and say what they wish to believe and say and can end up decrying the author's position as "privileged" or "elitist" "oppressive" and so on and call for the "democratization" of the fandom or the work of fiction itself - this, however, a call to erase the work of fiction and to metaphorically kill - and rob - the author.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although "Death of the Author" wishes to make authors' intentions and biography irrelevant when it comes to interpretations of their works, there is nothing in "Death of the Author" that would prevent the respectful preservation of informations about authors' intentions and biography and acknowledgment of the meaning they hoped to convey to their readers or audiences. This is the preservation of the knowledge and history of the past, communicated through arts, and it's necessary for the normal functioning of any culture and society. By contrast, "Death to the Author!" is an assault on the author and an assault on their works. In truth, it's the unwillingness to engage in the exchange of views, opinions and ideas, and to allow our own views, opinions and ideas to be challenged by others. This makes "Death to the Author!" a symptom of a dangerous attitude becoming more and more common in communities and this makes it a version of book burning: it's an attempt to erase artistic content that is not in line with a given fan’s system of likes and dislikes, ideology, views, opinions, beliefs, values, and it's the demand for the freedom to first spread and eventually to impose an "interpretation" of the content that does. This time, the erasure is not physical, since the loathed works are still there, physically, but they are robbed from their voice, and it's no longer able to reach its audience.

Can you do Male Reader X EXO?
So, its basically when either Male reader or an EXO member is struggling with his homework.
❃EXO and helping with your school/uni work ❃
A/N: Heyyy, I am so sorry this took as long as it did. I had to take some time off of posting on Tumblr as I am about to start my graduation process for my RMA. In a way, it was super cathartic to write this prompt so it became a bit of a mix between school and uni work, I hope you don't mind :')
Regarding male x-readers: I try to keep my prompt as gender-neutral as possible, mostly so anyone can insert themselves regardless of whether they identify as male, female, non-binary, etc. However, I am totally open to doing any LGBTQIA+-specific prompts, so feel free to do so!
Tumblr media
Xiumin/Minseok:
✾ Considering this man is rumoured to have a PhD (although not specified in what), you would think that he would be an amazing person to have around when you are struggling through your homework/coursework. However, being smart doesn’t always equate to being able to offer understandable explanations.
✾ His brain skips so many steps when he is tackling a problem or working on an essay. He knows why something is right or wrong, but he can’t really explain how he got to his answers. It comes so naturally to him that he struggles to dissect his thought processes and convey them to someone else.
✾ Ultimately, he will convince you to email your teacher/professor; they can explain it much better than he can, anyway. After having corresponded so often with professors during his own studies, he is more than capable of helping you with formulating your email in such a way that they would agree to help you out.
✾ Still, after having studied as much as he has, he understands the struggle of keeping up with homework/coursework. Considering he got his degrees whilst being an idol, he is incredible at planning his work efficiently. Thus, he instead offers to help you with creating a schedule, giving you a more healthy work-life balance.
Tumblr media
Suho/Junmyeon:
✾ Well, considering that he has an MA in Cultural Management and talked at Stanford (plus it has been proven time and time again that Suho is incredibly intelligent), he is one of the best members to go to if you ever struggle with your homework/coursework. He strikes me as someone who, although they are incredibly smart, can explain his inner thoughts very well.
✾ Give him a whiteboard, and he will shine. Don’t ask me why, but I can totally imagine him being one of those people that is convinced that “you have to visualize things. Write it down to have more space in your head to think.” Does that work? Maybe. Is it annoying to be told time and time again to “just draw it”? Yes.
✾ If he isn’t familiar with the topic/class that you are struggling with, he will take time out of his busy schedule to familiarize himself with it. He will find a couple of sources or a handbook so that he can read up on it.
✾ A part of him enjoys studying and learning together, smiling the entire time as you do so. Despite your own stress on why you can’t seem to work through the problem/assignment, you can’t help but return his quiet enthusiasm.
Tumblr media
Baekhyun:
✾ Another member who went to university to get his degree (although I can’t find out whether he has a BA or MA, sources are so incredibly vague) and is probably used to studying whilst being unbelievably busy. Furthermore, Suho has said before that although Baekhyun tends to be the mood maker of EXO on camera, Baekhyun is a deep thinker and has many philosophical conversations with him in private. Therefore, I can imagine him being another member who would be good at conveying his thoughts very well, offering you a coherent explanation.
✾ He would be an expert on making studying fun. Instead of having to cram a bunch of facts or read a long dry article for your next class, he would find a way to gamify it, turning it from a long boring study session into a fun competition. Although he might not be a huge help regarding the content of your class, he would help you to keep your motivation while studying.
✾ At the same time, I can totally see Baekyhun being a massive distraction while studying. You will be trying to solve a problem or work on that lengthy essay, and Baekhyun keeps trying to get you to pay attention to him, as he is too restless to sit still and study. He strikes me as someone who tries to convince you to do it tomorrow instead.
Tumblr media
Chen/Jongdae:
✾ He has an MA in Media Advertisement so you can bet that he can sell a story. I am pretty sure Media Advertisement falls under either business or communication studies, so he will probably be not too shabby at statistics either. He will, therefore, not only sell you on why studying this particular subject is fun, but he will also be able to help you actually study the contents of most math-based subjects.
✾ Chen probably is too busy to delve deeply into the subject matter that you are trying to grasp, though. He will try, nonetheless, to work through it with you. He will sit next to you as you try to solve equations, and although he might not have mastered the theory himself, he will try to learn it with you, giving you a fresh set of eyes.
✾ I think rather than being incredible at explaining stuff, he would be an amazing person for emotional support. I can see him prioritize calming you down first and having you take a step back from studying to clear your head. He would make sure that you stay hydrated and fed while studying, preparing a bunch of snacks beforehand that he will hand out as a reward for making it through another chapter.
Tumblr media
Chanyeol:
✾ Am I tired of repeating myself and saying “This member is smart because they got their degree”? Yes. Am I insanely impressed with most of EXO going to university whilst balancing their studies with a full-time idol career? Yes, and I will never shut up about it. Anyway, yeah Chanyeol went to university bla bla, making him, not just smart, bla  bla, but also hard-working, bla bla. You know the drill.
✾ Regardless of whether Chanyeol is well-studied in the field you are struggling in, nothing will stop him from becoming an expert. He is reading up on it as if his life depended on it, driven by his strong dislike of being bad at something. It doesn't matter whether you tell him it is okay and that you can always ask a fellow student or your teacher/lecturer; he is having none of it.
✾ At this point, he is more frustrated about not grasping a particular part of the theory than you. Even after you two manage to work through your homework/coursework, he will continue to read up on the topic until he fully understands it.
✾ He might be an overachiever and perfectionist who could’ve very well used the time that he spent on a piece of information he will never ever use again more wisely, but if anyone ever needs to know more about that specific theory, he can tell them everything.
Tumblr media
D.O./Kyungsoo:
✾ Listen, I love him with every fibre in my body, and I will continue to do so until I turn to dust, but Kyungsoo has admitted, on several occasions, that he is not a big fan of studying. Sure, he got his degree, just like the others, and got his culinary license, indicating that he is more than capable of retaining a ton of information and working through difficult assignments/problems. But, does he enjoy studying? No, not really; he got it over with and seems glad to be done.
✾ So, when you ask him to help you with your homework/coursework, he will remind you, at least seven times, that he isn’t too good at studying and that there are better people to ask for help instead. He will try his best, albeit reluctantly, reminding you continuously to lower your expectations.
✾ In the end, he will try to help out in a different way, either by supplying you with a ton of study snacks or recounting how he worked through tough assignments back when he was in university, with the hope that maybe it works for you as it did for him. He makes sure that you are as comfortable as you can be, convinced he can’t do much more than that.
Tumblr media
Kai/Jongin:
✾ Listen, don’t get me wrong, I adore Kai. However, I have to say that he is not the brightest when it comes to academia (at least compared to the rest of EXO) or, like, his common sense. Yes, he had his moments of genius in New World, and I am sure that when it comes to memorizing dance and lyrics, he is insanely good. However, give him a math problem, and he will cry.
✾ Kai strikes me as someone who was exhilarated to be done with school, not seeing the point of going to university like the rest of his members. When you ask him to help you out with your home/coursework, something inside of him dies as he knows nothing that will be leaving his mouth will be helpful. He is too sweet to say no and will try his hardest to help you with whatever you are struggling with. Nevertheless, he is even more lost than you upon reading your assignment, confused by all the fancy words the assignment seems to be using.
✾ Nevertheless, Kai would be an amazing person if you need someone to talk to without necessarily needing any advice/answers, just to get your own ideas out of your head. He knows exactly when to nod and say “hmhm”,  aware that you don’t necessarily want to get his input, only needing him to work through your thoughts and ideas on your own.
✾ Honestly, he gets an A for effort for me. Kai is good vibes only, and he would give you a hug for support.
Tumblr media
Sehun:
✾ Another one who is glad he finished school and never has to go back. Again, don’t get me wrong, I love Sehun, but you can’t deny that he isn’t the smartest person in the room. As Suho said during EXO Ladder, “I think, they (the beluga whales) have the same IQ as Sehun” after noting they have an IQ of 60-90.
✾ Where Kai still tries to help out, he flat-out refuses. What do you mean you need his help finishing your work? He is so unapologetic about it too and slightly offended; why did you have to remind him about the horror that is school? He left that behind him and under no circumstances will he ever be dragged back in. He is rich, and he needs no degree.
✾ Such a bad influence on you as he tries to keep you from doing your work. “Well, if you are struggling with your homework you might as well take a break and go to the convenience store with me.” Funnily enough, it actually helps to clear your head. Sometimes the best thing to do is to step away and try again with a clearer mind. Sehun maintains that it was his plan all along; you doubt it.
✾ He will end up asking one of his members to assist you with your homework, calling in a favour with, for instance, Suho. They are all down bad for him, so you end up with the best tutors EXO has to offer.

You have mentioned that you read a lot of academic writing, so I was wondering how you annotate your reading? Or any tips on reading academic writing. Thank you!
Tips on Reading Academic Writing, & My Explanations & Experiences (pure tips are highlighted in bold)
Thank you for the ask! I'm not a professional, but I will share what I've found useful as a student/soon-to-be grad. Besides the few times that my professors have required us submit formally annotated bibliographies, I usually do not take them in any neat, organized way. When I read an academic text, I often underline/highlight if possible (if I have an ebook version or paper version to do so) while focusing on key words/key concepts and inserting any associated words/concepts that come to mind. I also copy/paste (or use iPhone's text scanner in the photo app) specific terms or phrases that I want to remember or that stick out to me. I primarily use my Notes app bc it syncs from my laptop to my phone. If I'm doing a close-reading and wish to take my time, I read over each paragraph (or in rare cases when I really wish to do an even closer reading, each sentence) and I attempt to then summarize it to myself in as few words as possible. This last part appeals to my own personal learning style though, which I'll discuss further on below.*
I scan every text for the most important parts, keeping in mind that each paragraph contains its own sub-topic. A paragraph is like a scene in a film or a play, and each one has its own beginning, middle, and ending. By reading the first or last sentence of a paragraph, you can usually glean what the whole paragraph is about. The first and last sentences of a paragraph are the most important. Likewise, the opening and closing paragraphs of an essay exist to summarize the most important parts of the entire essay. The thesis statement (the main idea of an essay, or the "TLDR summary" to put it into Reddit terms) is usually located at the end of the first paragraph of an essay. Also, this all applies to formal academic writing; not so with casual or creative writing. If I am desperately trying to absorb information and don't have the time/energy to fully study something, what I do is allocate the work's thesis statement, and try to summarize in my own terms the "main point(s)" of the work.
Another invaluable piece of advice is to build your vocabulary and keep vocabulary lists for heavy reading (a list of terms and their definitions). Some academic papers or textbooks will include these in their works. For years, I have kept a sacred list called "Words" which is simply a list of terms that I either struggle to remember or that I've had to look up the definition of. But specific topics get their own vocabulary list, especially if it's something niche or a list of terms only used by a specifer writer or in a specific theory or sub-field. A lot of academics/writers/philosophers invent terms to more easily explain or describe their concepts. Heideigger, considered one of the most interesting but difficult philosophers to understand, is especially difficult with this. It feels like learning a new language sometimes to read his work. But academic reading is often a matter of the writer putting forth new ideas and/or explaining complex things, and so it is often slow, heavy reading, which requires patience.
My biggest piece of advice is to look up lists of learning styles and try to experiment with each of them until you find which one(s) work best for you. Maybe review your earliest memories from school or past memories where you felt like you were excited to learn. Try to implement these while reading information to see what method is most beneficial & comfortable. Everyone learns differently and no two people are exactly the same. Don't feel bad if methods working for others aren't working for you; this is an opportunity for further exploration.
*My individual learning style is "learning by teaching," which means that in order to retain information, I recapitulate it to myself, or make up imaginary scenarios where I have to teach or explain the information to others, or occasionally I do so in real life by info-dumping the information to interested people (or here on my blog). By explaining a subject, it deepens my own understanding of the subject, because you have to understand something well in order to be able to regurgitate it in your own words. If I get stuck and find myself unable to explain something, then this allows me to see where I'm lacking knowledge, and what I need to review. I recall implementing this learning style in some of my earliest memories. Around ages 3/4, I would pretend to be a teacher in an imaginary classroom while practicing my letters and numbers.

i swear to god, it’s a prerequisite requirement for philosophers to have the most bizarre relationship with music imaginable. kierkegaard spends so much time in “either or” comparing the merits of mozart’s “don giovanni” against “don juan”. adorno made a whole event about how much he hated jazz. and hegel had some kind of mental block where he couldn’t get through an essay without inserting some defense of, who cares, atonal throat singing or whatever.
after a certain point, it begs the question, “you good?”

Cerebus The Aardvark: Issues #101-#200. Continued Thoughts (Repost)
Tumblr media
This is the second part of the three part saga of my opinions on Cerebus The Aardvark. I suggest you read the first part that I posted a few days ago, if you have no idea what’s going on or need some context. (Originally posted to FA on January 17th 2023) So I've continued reading Cerebus and yeah, the previous flaws that might've shown a bit in the previous issues really start to ramp up here and get worse the closer we get to issue #200. (I did mention in the previous journal about Dave Sim's anti-feminist views and I'll get into even more of his... Interesting views later on) Issues #101-#113: This is a continuation of the previous arc, though more story elements are added in as previous echoes, that were hinted at earlier in the story arc, start to build up properly and add weight to the story as Cerebus ascends (In a literal and metaphorical sense) to where he meets the Judge who.... Well, judges the many people of the world. After a long speech which developes the world building a bit more, he tells Cerebus that he's destined to die "alone, unmourned and unloved", that his empire has collapsed to an invading army and that the vast majority of his followers are dead. Issues #114-#150: After Cerebus literally falls back down to earth, he walks around the mostly ruined city that he once ruled, before eventually running into Jaka and her new husband Rick. Cerebus stays with them for a bit as a houseguest and there's a bit of tension as Cerebus does his best to try and split Jaka and Rick up, still showing that he loves her deeply and is heartbroken that she's found someone else. This part of the story is lightly pushed down as the character Oscar is introduced, who is 100% written as Oscar Wilde, he plays a major part in the story as he starts writing a story based on Jaka's life, without Jaka knowing. Cerebus leaves to go do a basic errand and while he's gone, Jaka, Rick and Oscar are captured by the new dictatorship controling the region (The dictatorship being mostly big burly women and one of the higher ups being Margaret Thatcher... Seriously). The latter half of this arc deals with the last days of Oscar's life, after being severely scarred by his time in prison. It also deals with Cerebus who is deeply shell shocked, believing that Jaka is dead. Issues #151-#200: This is probably one of the longest arc's in the series. In is part, we get more details on two other aardvarks that exist in this world; Cirin (Leader of the new dictatorship) and Suenteus Po (An extremely powerful philosopher who has lived through several incarnations of himself). There's a lot of mind games as Cerebus, Cirin and Astoria (She's back now) try to change things to their own ideologies, with Po trying to prevent things from going to complete shit. In the third part of the arc, the viewer is shown parts of an in-universe essay, which basically describes a theory on the sexes using a female void (Which focuses on feelings and emotions) and a male void (Which focuses on reason and logic). This honestly reads like it's Dave Sim's thoughts and it mostly comes out of nowhere, like it holds a bit of relevance to the story arc but it just feels very tacked on in my opinion and it's one of the first major times Dave Sim would throw his thoughts and opinions into the story. This story arc starts to reach it's end as Cerebus, Cirin, Astoria and Po finally meet together. Po is able to talk Astoria out of fighting Cerebus and Cirin, helped by the fact that Astoria is worn out by the constant violence. Astoria and Po then leave after they're unable to talk down Cerebus and Cirin, leaving them to fight and good god is their fight violent as hell, leaving them both covered in blood, but alive. Eventually they're both shot up into space by "god" (Who turns out to be called Dave and is 100% a self-insert of Dave Sim) and they're slowly split apart, this leaves Cerebus alone with his thoughts and we get a good look at some moments from his past. (Caution warning: Censored Homophobic Slur Mentions) It's also during this time that Cerebus is left alone with his thoughts and he starts praying to Tarim (The none Dave Sim god), at first being thankful for being saved and then out of nowhere, starts thanking Tarim for not minding him being a f*ggot, while also loudly trying to drown out those thoughts by chanting "Shut Up" as he unintentionally brings up a few moments of him being aroused by men, while also repeatedly using the word f*ggot, mentioning that he hates f*ggots and that being a f*ggot is a sin. Now this is all brought up because it's mentioned in the third part that Cerebus is a hermaphrodite and has or had the ability to reproduce by himself if need be, that really troubles Cerebus and is what caused his outburst. I understand that in medieval fantasy, there is some carry over of what the laws were in the irl medieval era, but there are way better ways to handle it and doing it in such a way where the character is disgusted by these thoughts and saying that they're morally wrong, is really hard to take, especially considering they're the main character. But anyway, back to the story; Eventually Cerebus meets "god" who is shown in word balloon text as he changes various things while speaking in Cerebus's mind, proving that he is a supreme being in some sense. "god* then shows Cerebus the destiny that he was supposed to have followed, but that he screwed it up royally and is now set on a path of self-destruction, he then shows Cerebus two possible realities in which he lives with Jaka, neither of which end well for either of them. The arc ends after Cerebus is stuck on a small planet for a while, as a type of penance, before he is sent back to earth. So, here are the good bits: The art is fantastic, both Dave Sim and Gerhard (He was the main background artist from issue #65 onwards) did a brilliant job. The writing can be very good at times, like the converstations between characters as they argue and discuss topics can be really interesting. Now for my main gripe: Dave Sim's thoughts and opinions bleeding into the story. It's now reached a point where it's gone from being fairly balanced, into just full on "This is what I think and you're going to have to deal with it" and it's really hurting the story. Nearly every female character is now an antagonist or is really watered down character-wise (Even more than before). It's also clear that his anti-LGBTQA+ opinions are showing and it's only gonna get worse from here as he goes deeper into has ramblings in the comments section, which at times takes up more space than the actual story he's making. I will continue reading this series as there's only 100 issues left and a few extras that I might comment on. Overall, I stand by that Dave Sim is a fucking arsehole and someone with some serious personal issues that he didn't resolve. He's talented, but that does not excuse the hate he spews from his gob. Thank you for reading. As before, if I'm factually wrong or have said something you disagree with, do let me know via a comment or DM on either here or on Twitter. Cheers.

I WANT TO BE A WORM CRAWLING INSIDE MOKUBA'S BRAIN AND STARE AT HIS THOUGHTS IN BLISS.
----
The KitKat bar is challenging him. He is sure of it. Looking at him behind the glass with a smug expression. Mocking him, making fun of him. I dare you to push the button. Fucking annoying. He redirects his attention to the row below. The small pack of Kopiko tells a different story altogether. It is begging him, watching him with pleading eyes to free it from the sorrow of the refrigerated prison. That KitKat asshole must have everyone under its thumb, ruling as a king over the microcosmic empire of snacks called FamilyMart. Well, fuck you KitKat.
Mokuba inserts the coins in the slot (one cherry blossom, two phoenix hall) and presses the number ‘one’ followed by the ‘five’. The machine awakes from its sleep with a buzz. The metal coils of the prison rotate releasing the captive small pack which falls in the open compartment below. Finally, freedom. Mokuba grins victorious. He kneels and pushes the compartment door reaching for his cold prize. He shoots a last glance at the snack on the other side of the glass: emperor KitKat is raging, yet powerless. That doesn’t mean Mokuba has put a stop to his reign of terror. No, the moment he turns away KitKat will divert its rage and punishment to the other prisoners under his control. Well, nothing Mokuba can do about it. Goodbye asshole. Not my fucking problem.
He walks away from the vending machine and sinks on the closest bench in the white room, his body feeling understandably heavy because he hasn’t slept in ages. Like a true Kaiba. Fuck hospitals fuck doctors fuck my idiot brother laying semi-comatose upstairs. Again. For the second time. A cosmic wicked prank, that’s what their life is. Years pass seasons change and we are clinging in this fucked up eternal looped hoax of our misery stuck in the same immutable frozen truth over and over again. I hate you so much. I love you so much. I have been surviving just fine without you and I cannot live without you.
Mokuba leans his head compliantly against the wall, closes his eyes and lingers. Seconds, minutes, hours. It doesn’t matter. If he falls asleep, someone will come waking him up just in time for the bijillion things appointed on his daily to-do list he doesn’t even bother to check. As if he needed to. cfo at 9.00 meeting.meeting.meeting. industrial illusions ceo at 11.00. report to the board at 12.00 because those assholes wants to keep up with everything that’s going on like they give a shit about him and the other idiot because this machine for pigs cannot stop grinding and profits.profits.profits Marx was right.
Mokuba lets out an exhausted sigh. He opens his eyes again and looks down at the Kopiko pack hanging from his fingers. He pulls it open and sticks his hand in to draw the small wrapped confectionary. Lunch break at 1.00 reports.reports.reports. r&d at 2.00 testing.testing.testing. He removes the thin paper and shoves the sweet block into his mouth whole. Released from a lifetime under dictatorship only for it to end its journey in a stinky toilet. Someone somewhere has written a philosophical essay about the meaning of life of FamilyMart snacks. The intense flavor of coffee melts in his palate. Mokuba’s eyes fixes on the white spotless ceramic tiles covering the floor of the small waiting room.
Seto woke up two days earlier in the ICU. He opened his eyes briefly. However, they soon had to administer an IV dose of morphine before he went into tachycardia. Doctors tried to cheer him up saying the response to pain was a good thing. YEAH LET ME TELL YOU A COUPLE OF THINGS ABOUT MY BROTHER’S PAIN, he wanted to yell. Not a word about the rest, though. It is still too early to know, mister Kaiba. He called Mokuba’s name. That must have been a good sign, right?
He had been comatose for sixteen days, fourteen hours and thirty-seven minutes after the surgery. Mokuba had been measuring the time painstakingly with the meticulous precision of an atomic clock because that’s exactly what Seto had been for two weeks: an idle mass of still particles and unreactive electrons at zero frequency of resonance and momentum debunking the entirety of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle; an immovable and immutable pile of flesh and tubes, lines and cables sticking out his nose, chest, stomach and bladder as an extension of his own starving emaciated body.
Yet, Mokuba thinks there’s something decorous and beautiful in his blissfully simulated sleep. Even in his resting state Seto is a fixed mark in the flow of time. Pale and inert like marble crystallized in the eternal beauty of a greek statue that would make Michelangelo blush in admiration and jealousy at his sight. Seto’s charming even in a coma, gorgeous and grotesque as something born simultaneously from the hands of a Canova and a Dalí. It horrifies him and it amazes him he can barely keep his eyes away from the lifeless cocoon.
He woke up then and he went back to sleep. Seto is now a pupa. The chrysalis will complete its transformation and Seto-imago will emerge from its shell at the conclusion of this metamorphosis. Will you still be the same will you be different will you still love me will you accept the pain that we are fucking broken and I don’t care about perfection I never wanted a flawless you I want you to accept me/us for who we are.

I feel like everyone should have their ocs heard at least once SO DO TELL MORE I haven’t interacted with u that much but I may reveal who I am hehehe
∑(゚ロ゚〃) someone wants to hear about my OCs? Really?
I have many OCs (kinda) (not really)! I'll only talk about Enstars first bc much to say about each of them so this is gonna be a loooong ramble already!! I apologize in advance for my possibly incoherent essay(s)
First up, Kiyoko!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She used to be a Yuguysona back when I was in the NijiEN rabbithole, but bc I was too attached to her design to toss/scrap him, I brought him into the Enstars Universe! Kiyoko was meant to stay as like- my self insert/persona in Enstars? But they eventually kinda deviated from that and became her own character!
Uhhh as you can see I've been running around she/he/they for Kiyoko, and that's because he's gender fluid! Why? Because I am a mess about my own gender and creating/tweaking Kiyoko was a way for me to explore that area. Now they're my gender goals + I am very down bad for her ✨
Just like my other soon-to-be-rambled-about OCs, this blueberry is a very tragic little creature - she has one or two problems from my life mixed in with the hundreds of problems from the Ensemble Stars Universe. Relatively nice family, once bullied, has a friend in a coma, swings between being compliant to being stubborn, overthinks and overworks, is a very tired child... Yeah! The usual~ A third year student in Yumenosaki, who sneaked in as a male in the first year with the help of some teachers, but now others knowing she's afab doesn't get him kicked out either so 👏👏👏 went solo for a while before the mess in the war, so they picked up a teammate/friend by being weirdly philosophical and whimsical on the roof of the school 👍! Kiyoko is very passionate about the idea of freedom thanks to The War in Enstars aksnksnskd
What's ironic about him is that she's the leader of a unit whose theme is "freedom", yet mentally she's as free as a dove in an undersized cage. Kiyoko keeps going on and on about how people need the freedom to choose (as long as it doesn't harm others) and yet never gives himself that freedom due to fear of making another mistake that would snowball into a devastating consequence (see: friend in coma).
Anyway! We have very similar fashion sense/styles, which is over-the-top-accessorizing! I have no explanation for this other than: I really like earrings and chains and chokers and rings and boots and shiny silver bits and looking good in general! We both really like singing too, just that I have stage fright despite performing on stage for 10years (school). Aaaaand we're both sleepy babies we can and will curl up anywhere on the grass floor cement ground and sleep 😴
All these lead to funny little scenarios between her and other characters, mostly when they randomly trip over him/catch her knocked out in the middle of hallways (all these scenarios happened in my head).
Um. I think that's it for him sorry it's so long for the first one orz
Oh one more thing! I suffer from being a Kiyoko fan bc I'm the only source of art for them but I have little to no motivation to draw 😭
Aaaaand that's a wrap! Next one, Ai!
(apparently her file isn't on my phone so I only have her picrew + pencil drawing)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sunshine of Kiyoko's unit, Wing5! Formerly a solo idol who failed after debut, she was scouted out by New Di/Kiyoko/Tsumugi to be part of Wing5. She's a strong vocalist, often pairing with Kiyoko to take on the melody of their songs, hence the ship name "Songbirds" (That ship is like fan speculation? It's not entirely canon unless I want it to be)
In terms of appearance, Ai and I look the most similar thanks to our front bangs ✨ Her hair is all purple, she just dyed her side bangs to match her eyes! Also since every OC has a piece of their creator's soul, she has my extroverted side! She's a bumbling 20 year old or so - think "wine aunt" vibes!
Ai's actually very insecure though, due to her failure as a solo idol. She may be cheeky, but she's very sensitive to others' emotions and tries her best not to push them to the limit in case they decide to abandon her because of whatever antics she's up to, or because she's not good enough. Imposter syndrome too, maybe?
I think she needs to be babied more she's always taking care of others... Mom of Wing5™️ old
Next! Uhhhh what was her name... Yurika!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Resident tryhard emo and chronically online child, her strength lies more in marketing, video editing etc. more than performing onstage! Despite being paired with Akari (who will be rambled about next) due to her dance, Yurika is more widely recognized as Wing5's rapper.
She's the shortest in Wing5! ++ An albino, which is why all Wing5 performances are usually done indoors/at night outdoors to prevent aggravating her condition (I opened so many tabs for this but I've forgotten so much I'm sorry if anything isn't accurate). Her left eye is also affected by... Something which the name I can't remember- it affects albinos and causes their vision to be blurry, even with glasses. Yurika just needs glasses in general bc she has been sitting in front of the PC for so long sknskdnd
Our similarities... Being online like 24/7? She has a worse sleep schedule than me though bwahahaa ✨ We both also melt. Like. Absolutely melt into nothingness whenever we're presented with affection. (At least I think I would...?)
Her ship with Akari is. Canon. I will not hear arguments I created them!! 🙉 They've been traveling/living together for a few years before Wing5, when Yurika was 15 and Akari was 18, bc their families are close friends and Yurika's family decided it was time to kick her out of her dark gloomy room to see the world with Akari, who was going around Japan to look for jobs as a dancer! When Akari landed a job, they had to continue travelling to follow the idol around on his/her concerts as a backup dancer, and Yurika stuck with Akari throughout the years until they landed in Wing5~ it's like the "omg they were roommates" situation! She's very prickly with everyone else aside from Akari, especially Kiyoko bc they have severely clashing opinions from time to time lmao
Bonus: She uses her name as a pun for "Eureka" so it sounds like "this is an Eureka moment!" but it practically means 'this is Yurika's moment!'
I never thought I'd say so much about Yurika but I will speak more about her in the next ramble about her wife girlfriend, Akari!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heads up, Akari's transfem! She transitioned before + during her travels with Yurika, but doesn't feel completely female? An imbalanced in-between, like a tomboyish girl! And that's why she's the tallest in Wing5, bc hormones- By male standards, she's softer and more feminine, but by female standards she's a little too masculine. Gender who?
Tragically, she doesn't have a family other than her little brother (to be rambled about next), whom she is very protective about. She was taken care of by Yurika's family until 15 when she moved to school dorms while her brother remained with Yurika's family, then after graduation she came back to bring Yurika around Japan at her family's request.
They do return Yurika's feelings towards them, though Akari needed time to sort her own emotions out after Yurika's confession because they had never really thought of having a partner? Akari just felt comfortable and safe and at home with Yurika, that's all. So yeah they were disaster gays at some point before officially starting their relationship as lovers!
Akari is really hostile towards Kiyoko, though she displays it mostly in a passive-aggressive way. Why? Bc they blame Kiyoko for what happened to her little brother 😔 Will be explained soon!
Akari's name used to be Akira! This is a coincidence that it happens to be the Enstars story writer's name, I didn't know until a while after creating Akari 😅
Next, Hikari!

Yana's Suggestion
Tumblr media
I was talking with Yana in the wet labs about my project, and she suggested this book by a Japaneese philosopher in the 1930s, it discusses the value of imperfect handmade everyday items. I've found a sneaky PDF online :)
The book is divided into a series of essays written by Japanese Philosopher Soetsu Yanagi over a few decades in the early 20th century. Some of the essays that are more relevant to my project are:
What is Folk Craft? 1933
‘the roughly made’ (sobutsu)
Made for daily use
Common ordinary things
Made for use; utilitarian
“When a person could point to what he was wearing and say, ‘This belonged to my grandfather’, it was a source of pride. These days, however, the careless way things are made has robbed us of any feeling of respect or affection. From the viewpoint of social mores, this is a huge loss.” 23
“Until now we have been taught that the right way to appreciate beauty is through visual perception. This has applied principally to the so-called fine arts such as painting and sculpture. Even with handicrafts we have been taught to value craftware with little connection to its use, that is, craftware made for visual appreciation. Utilitarian crafts have been looked down on as something of a lower rank. As a result, our aesthetic sense has been severely impaired owing to the fact that beauty and life are treated as separate realms of being. Beauty is no longer viewed as an indispensable part of our daily lives. Confining beauty to visual appreciation and excluding the beauty of practical objects has proven to be a grave error on the part of modern man. A true appreciation of beauty cannot be fostered by ignoring practical handicrafts. After all, there is no greater opportunity for appreciating beauty than through its use in our daily lives, no greater opportunity for coming into direct contact with the beautiful.” 23
A Painted Karatsu as Food for Thought 1926
His thoughts on a broken Karatsu jar that was repaired using Katsugi; "the piece was not aiming at harmonious elegance. Here the dualism
between the beautiful and the ugly was broken. Here the utmost in
spontaneous beauty was achieved." p48
The entire thing would be good for my book?
“On November 1, I had stopped eating and was prostrate in bed, suffering from diarrhoea that had struck me the previous night. It was then that a small vessel was brought into the room, and I felt my heart leap with newfound energy. It was a painted Karatsu jar. The surface was tastefully done, the brushwork for the crest-like circle and the wild grasses excellent, and the iron-black shading unimpeachable. However, what particularly caught my eye was the repair work that had been done on the piece. It was astonishing how much it enhanced the beauty of the jar. I once read an article by an eminent collector in which he rather proudly stated that he didn’t collect pieces that had been repaired, but I imagine that if he were confronted with this Karatsu jar, his weak narrow-mindedness would be demolished in an instant. The flaw in the jar had clearly occurred in the kiln. The piece had been badly split during firing, creating a disjointed gap in the surface. It wasn’t a flaw due to a crack that formed when the jar was bumped against something, but one caused by the workings of natural forces. It probably resulted from the base being too thick, a common happening. The flaw was there, no doubt about it, but in effect the jar’s flawed form seemed to be its natural shape. There had been no attempt to disguise it, but rather gold-dusted lacquer had been amply employed to repair it. Without the slightest hesitation, lacquer had been liberally inserted into the crevice and gold powder unashamedly applied. In Zen Buddhism there are such sayings as ‘All is clear, openly revealed’, and it is this notion that gives this jar vivid life, with the harmony of its plump, round shape and its dark-black fluent brushwork for the crests. However, the piece was not aiming at harmonious elegance. Here the dualism between the beautiful and the ugly was broken. Here the utmost in spontaneous beauty was achieved. This is a living example of the Diamond Sutra’s exhortation to ‘awaken the mind without fixing it anywhere’. Recently there is a tendency to pursue distortion in art, but in the case of this jar, natural deformation has raised distortion to the level of spontaneous beauty. Karatsu ware is already highly regarded, and this piece is a precious instance of that craftware. In monetary terms, it was entirely beyond the means of someone like myself. The English word ‘priceless’ is an apt expression of its value. No matter how expensive it might be, it would still be cheap. The absolute value of beauty makes its relative monetary value meaningless. Still, it had a price that made it, in a pinch, well worth buying for the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. I wanted to bring it to the attention of many people, to give them the opportunity of appreciating its profundities with their own eyes. However, it will not do to treat an object like this as a mere pastime, for personal viewing, for purchasing, or as a means of satisfying one’s desire for possession. There are few objects that provide craftspeople of all types with so much to think about. Is there anyone who would not be lost in thought looking upon this work? From it I received much food for the heart. I have written this essay in reverent thanks, to which I append a verse expressing my sense of gratitude.
Look. Oh, look.
All is clear, openly revealed.
This countenance, this mien.” 48/49

The Japanese Perspective 1957
“Generally speaking, the Western perception of art has its roots in Greece. For a long time its goal was perfection, which is particularly noticeable in Greek sculpture. This was in keeping with Western scientific thinking; there are no painters like Andrea Mantegna in the East. I am tempted to call such art ‘the art of even numbers’. In contrast to this, what the Japanese eye sought was the beauty of imperfection, which I would call ‘the art of odd numbers’. No other country has pursued the art of imperfection as eagerly as Japan. I once read a discourse on art by Wassily Kandinsky in which he took a highly favourable interest in the Japanese word e-soragoto (‘art [picture] is fantasy’). The word refers to the quest for truth that goes beyond truth; it refers to the art of imperfection, the art of odd numbers.” 95
The emphasis on imperfection in Japanese art comes from valuing the beauty in broken tea utensils “Here I would like to say a word about the character of tea utensils. As I wrote above, tea is not repelled by cracking and distortion but rather sees them as a new source of beauty, an expression of freedom. Nowadays, the West has become very conscious of deformation, and almost all of its modern art intentionally incorporates it in some form or another. Yet this same deformation has been a part of the art of tea for over 400 years. This Japanese perspective, which doesn’t hesitate to find beauty even in cracked ware, is without parallel anywhere in the world. Of course, if this is taken to an extreme, the ordinary form of an object will be violated and the original meaning lost. It is said that tea masters would sometimes break a bowl on purpose and then have fun mending it. This is going a bit too far, I think, even though it is a result of the tea masters’ insight into the nature of beauty. It might be seen as a deleterious effect of this perspective and something to be guarded against. Nevertheless, it was the tea masters who first discovered the beauty of deformation, and they are to be honoured for their originality and insight. This tradition is still ingrained in the Japanese eye for beauty, permeating the Japanese soul after decades of training. It is an appreciation of art that is free and unhampered. Deformation represents a quest for beauty that goes beyond the limitation of fixed forms” 96-97
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Woodblock Prints 1939
“In general, the arts and handicrafts are thought of as opposing concepts” 119
“I consider kasuri to be among the most superlative of Japanese textiles. In the process of its production, however, a blurry effect around the edges of the patterns is invariably created due to misalignment. Yet this blurry effect cannot be cavalierly dismissed. While the word ‘misalignment’ may imply that something is wrong, unneeded and unwanted, without it and the resultant blurry effect, where would the beauty be? The essence, the very reason for kasuri’s existence, would be gone. Carried to excess, such misalignment would wreak havoc on the intended patterns, but a certain amount of misalignment and blurriness is what brings out the beauty of kasuri, what constitutes its essence, what makes it what it is. In kasuri we see a case in which a lack of freedom is the wellspring of beauty.” 121

And getting started and using   It as your assistant writer is not very hard. But there  are several hidden prompts and formulas that you   really need to know about to get the most out of  it. And at the end of the day, if you're using   ChatGPT you already have a competitive advantage.  But even within that, this content will give you   another advantage over all the typical: "I am  a large language model" answer receivers. And   first I want to begin with a use case that you've  probably already seen, and that's asking it to   Write an essay. But I need you to start thinking  differently about this. Because this is what ChatGPT   really sees in the background. And if  you see the formula written out like this, it allows you to craft prompts that are completely  unique to you. And then you can start expanding it   With building blocks like: "in the style of", and  then you insert the style. This is really the key   to becoming a little more advanced here. Okay,  and here's a quick tip on a few things you could   insert instead of the variables. Instead of essay,  you could say a poem, blog article, or song.   And instead of Hemingway, you could pick most  public personalities who have published a large   body of work. This could range from all the way from philosophers  and religious figures to comedians like Dave   Chappelle. Now that you understand the basic  writing prompt, I want to show you some tricks and   Keywords that will help you get the most out of  your writing. I'll just take the first paragraph   from Wikipedia of my favorite artist, and we will  use some of the keywords here. So when I insert it into ChatGPT and put it into quotation marks. One fantastic keyword here Is "rephrase"; what that will do is express the  same ideas in a different tone. Now yes, this   could easily be abused to plagiarize, but I'm not  here to judge the ethical implications. I'm simply   showing what is possible with this technology. And as you can see here it turns the Wikipedia   Article into an almost original piece of text,  kind of. And if I use a basic plagiarism checker,   and first, check for the Wikipedia article and  then for the ChatGPT output after I rephrased   it this is what I get: The Wikipedia article is  80% plagiarized, obviously, actually it's kinda   Surprising that it's not 100 right? And as you can  see the ChatGPT gets a 100 % unique rating. Now   look I am fully aware that universities have more  complex plagiarism checkers, but the point is that   the keyword: "rephrase" is pretty damn powerful. Ok so the next super powerful prompt right here   Focuses on a different aspect of writing. A lot  of times if you write you first have to research.   And in order to research you have to absorb  information. And if you do your work well   you absorb a lot of information, like a book!  That would also be a typical school assignment,   Wouldn't it? I could just go ahead and say:  "Provide me with an outline of for the book The   Old Man And The Sea."By the way, I read that, and  so should you. Incredible book. But let's see what   ChatGPT can do here. Excellent work, honestly.  So as you can see "provide me with an outline" is   an extremely powerful prompt because you can run  this on books, articles or even transcripts that   you feed it yourself. And you could always go in  and say: "Elaborate on the second point". "Santiago   Sets out to sea early one morning, hoping to catch  a big fish and end his streak of 84 days without   a catch. And then in the end: Overall Santiagos struggle with the fish serves as a metaphor for the human struggle to   Overcome challenges and persevere in the face  of adversity." A legendary story worth reading,   but also a very useful prompt. Okay so here's  one that you could totally use for learning   purposes when working with a young person.
Let's  say they write a text and they use a pretty basic   Vocabulary: "Yesterday I went to school it was  really fun me and my friends had lunch and then   we played cards". Now instead of explaining to  that person hey maybe you could string these   together or maybe you could use more advanced  words or adjectives. Simply put this in quotation   Marks and tell ChatGPT the following: Replace  my simple vocabulary with advanced English.   "Yesterday I visited the school. The experience  was quite enjoyable. My friends and I shared a   meal together and afterwards engaged in a game  of cards". And honestly using a tool like this,   This is one of the better ways to communicate  with a human being. You can take input that they   generated and show them instantly, how else this  could be approached. And as per usual can follow   Up with: "Now write it in the style of a video game  dialogue" and instantly picks a tone of voice that   resonates with young people. If you appreciate  this content hit that like button for me but   now let's move on to the next point. Alright  and here's my last one and buckle up because   This is going to be huge for you, no I mean it.  This one is actually a game-changer. Act as a   professional spelling and grammar corrector and  improver. "sure I'd be happy to help. please   provide the text." and now we'll completely  butcher this and see what it can do okay?   Okay, let's just submit this and see what we  get. That is perfect! And here's one bonus tip   Now write that in the style of a Pulitzer Prize  winner. If you didn't know Pulitzer prizes are   literary Oscars. "Greetings dear sir or madam  as a connoisseur of the english language I find   Myself in need of a refreshing beverage and what  could be more fitting than a classic Coca-Cola."   Pretty cool, and as previously mentioned, you  can think about these in terms of formulas,   So really I just gave you the secret sauce  to so many functions. If you think about it. (All of them are in the video's description) Because act as a professional spelling and grammar  corrector and improver can be seen as act as a   Professional, insert profession. Now you pick and  right away you can start talking to a psychologist   or electrician. And trust me, you'll be surprised  by how professional and educated they actually   are. Alright, so what all these have in common is  that they took a different approach to communicate   With the AI. And that's really the key here.  The dataset that this has been trained by is,   in certain ways, superior to what humans can know.  But then there's other things we do way better.   But, by knowing some of these tips and tricks, you  can really combine the best of both worlds; your   Intuition, emotional intelligence, and knowledge,  with the AI's data. And that's the whole point of   this channel. But, in this video, I was only able  to show you five prompts, but the truth of the matter is, there is so much more. And I decided  to start a weekly newsletter featuring the best   And most innovative prompts so you can get the  maximum out of this revolutionary technology.   It's completely free and trust me, I'll make  sure it's the opposite of spam. Meanwhile,   here's a video with even more creative prompts  and, as per usual, put these to work responsibly.
