Edit: A writer's strike has not started. The Guild's membership has just authorized one in the cause that Guild reps and studio executives cannot come to an agreement on the contract.
Don't pull out the spirit holloween banners yet, is all I'm saying.
Edit 2, circa May 1, 2023: The studios have refused to negociate with the writers' guild in good faith, leaving the guild no choice but to strike.
A WGA STRIKE HAS BEGUN.

I wanted to give my own quick interpretation of the scene where Atsushi... imagines? hallucinates? all those people while conflicted over what to do in the most recent chapter, because idk I haven't seen people talk about it that much?
Tumblr media
See, the whole conflict with Atsushi in this arc is that he's replaced the constant demeaning of the orphanage director in his head with encouragement from his mentor, and he can control the tiger, and he supports the people around him... but Kunikida makes a point of saying (before everything went to shit) that while Atsushi's tiger is strong, he himself is still weak.
I don't think this has to do with Atsushi's character per se. I think it more so has to do with his still very simplistic views on people or the world - things are very black and white, good or bad. And when faced with a problem without a simple solution, Atsushi's unfortunate tendency is still to freeze up. This is not surprising - he may be 18, but he's a very... how do I put this... a very young 18. He hasn't had anyone teach him these things or guide him. He very much craves support and encouragement from others. He likely also didn't see much of the world outside the orphanage before he was kicked out either. And let's not forget how absolutely shot his self-esteem is. The fact that Atsushi functions and believes in the best in people as well as he does is testament to how kind-hearted and resilient of a person he is.
But here's the problem: Atsushi's self-confidence hasn't done much developing.
What Atsushi has learned throughout the story is how incredible the Agency as a whole is, and as he grows to learn and care about them and realize that he has been given a place to belong, he grows to support them in turn; pulls his weight in a number of increasingly badass ways (he caught a bullet with his teeth. GODDAMN). But all that confidence goes away the moment he is left alone. Atsushi has confidence in his own strength in a group - and only in a group.
Unfortunately, the Agency, though I believe well-intentioned, kind of enables this mentality in him. We see Ranpo, Kunikida and Kyouka in turn, who echo things they have said and would say to this situation.
"Don't you even know that?" Ranpo would ask this, rhetorically, and then solve it himself. Atsushi would not have time to come up with an answer of his own.
"Failure is unacceptable." Kunikida would say this and then act, no matter what. Atsushi would be left to follow what he does.
"You don't have to do anything." Kyouka would protect him. Atsushi wouldn't have to do anything because she would grab his arm and take over from there.
See what's happening here? These are no longer demeaning words from the headmaster (in fact, I want to reiterate that I believe they are all well-intentioned), but they still insinuate that Atsushi is incapable on his own. And indeed it's interesting that Atsushi sees these "visions" of Dazai guiding him all throughout the hunting dogs, sky casino and decay of angels arcs. I, for one, think this is just Atsushi's imagination and not a real vision (unless we get some evidence to the contrary in the future) but for now, it implies that Atsushi's self-confidence is still so abysmal that he has to imagine someone giving him advice and advising him on what to do - instead of being able to consciously admit these ideas are his own.
And then Fitzgerald shows up - "No one expects anything from you." Looming over him, a symbol of power and status over the panicked, conflicted form of a boy who feels eternally powerless without support.
And then it gets interesting.
Akutagawa shows up in Atsushi's mind, for the first time in a guiding role, not a demeaning one. And there's a definite reason for this - when Atsushi was all alone, when he admitted to himself he had no idea what to do and was terrified to be left to fight with no one else with him - who showed up?
Akutagawa. Akutagawa, who in spite of everything, fought by his side and was reliable. And the thing is, Akutagawa cannot take over, not in their kind of plans, or they just won't work. They have to work together. They have to be equals. And on some level, I think this part shows Atsushi's realization of the rather surprising amount of trust Akutagawa had to have placed in him - and him alone. I find it rather heartbreaking that Atsushi appears to have just now started to realize this after their plan failed due to a lack of trust (mostly on his side I'd say) and Akutagawa died.
So, Atsushi receives guidance from Akutagawa, and of course, from Dazai, the person he is extremely grateful for as a mentor. They don't tell him what to do. But still, Atsushi is guided into looking - "get out of your head" and moving - "the door is right there - do something about it". These "visions" still spur Atsushi into action, but the action itself? It's Atsushi's alone.
Atsushi still needs to justify his actions by imagining others giving him support, but this is definite progress for him restoring a sense of personal... agency (see what I did there?) within himself.
And yes, his eventual course of action is to find Fukuzawa and have him make the final decision on the matter - but really now, he's just been told something that apparently has Teruko (who I am certain is older than much of the cast and likely a former soldier from the war) drained and tired and seemingly conflicted herself - this isn't really the kind of issue you want to be deciding on all by yourself. Also, admitting you don't know what to do but moving forwards anyways to actively ask for advice or help is very much still making a decision and moving forward. Actively asking someone what they think about a complex situation is very different from being passive while others take control around you.
Atsushi made the decision to walk out that door into uncertainty. And I am convinced he's going to have to pick a course of action anyways - as of right now, Fukuzawa is out of commission, as are Dazai, Akutagawa, Ranpo and Kunikida (we don't know where Kyouka is yet).
It's been a long time coming, but this is serious progress for his character.

alright. know what? with Secrets of the Obscure right around the corner and plenty of new Mists-related sky island settings coming with it, I'll just bite the bullet and interest-check a little something I've been turning in my head for a long, long while.
would YOU be interested in a Mists-based GW2 roleplay guild that uses a lore compliant multiverse system to allow canon, canon-adjacent, lore-breaking, and otherwise 'contradictory' muses to coexist in the same setting?
Tumblr media
simply put: every writer's cast would be set in their own self-contained universe. as such, everyone could bring whatever muses they want with their own personal headcanons, and no one could dictate what is or isn't canon for anyone else. so long as your muses are GW2-based, you're good to go! bring your Commanders, bring your canon-divergent OCs, bring your canon muses-- and yes, even the ones that are 'supposed' to be dead. who can say what might have happened in a strange world far across the Mists, after all?
neutral hubs and in-character safety guardrails would be in place to keep all muses on a relatively even playing field regardless of their power, history, and prestige, too. play hardball if you like, but it might not end quite the way you'd hope. the main rule would be to maintain good OOC etiquette at all times: no godmodding, no metagaming, no theft, don't blend IC and OOC, and so-on.
if that sounds like something you might have interest in, please interact with this post! and if you've got questions or concerns, I'd love to hear them; feel free to send an ask or a DM, or just reply to this post!
#GW2 roleplay#GW2 rp#GW2#my posts#so there's a LOT of reasons why I'm putting this forward#but the biggest is that I really want there to be a place that's actually inclusive for all the creativity that exists in this fandom#there was exactly one Mists multiverse event a while back and it was well-received from everything I saw!#i know i for one had a lot of fun AND felt a lot more welcome and comfortable than i have at any other event#and then... we proceeded to just never have another again.#like. we could have more of that. that niche could still use filling! we can do SO much more with this!!!#and especially with SotO coming out we could have some REALLY interesting locations to meet up too!#I'd be happy to kickstart this stuff but the thing is: it WILL need support. I just can't do it all alone and that's a fact#example: if we want a guild hall in-game we'd have to work together to get one; that'd be great for hosting public and private events#my personal goal is 5-10 participants so that we can have enough to run small events and mingle muses a bit#IF there's enough interest i'll roll out more information at that time. for now tho i'll just leave it at this to test the waters#reblogs are HIGHLY appreciate here: i'm a smallfry in a big sea and not many people check the tags. spread the word if you want to see this#on that note: thanks for reading and hopefully i'll hear from some of you soon. o/#(side detail: that sky pic is a screen i snapped at night in Istan. it's so pretty there ok)

Desmond miles as hopes older brother! Des as hopes brother! I don't have much due to my painkillers giving me a crash and burn boost, but I can help offer what little info I do think of.
It's very clear hope has had a lady's upbringing and education, Desmond alreadly had "big brother" vibes after his time near ezio's sister and little brother so he gets soft with the pretty menace that is now his sister. He's sadly not fully aware of how bad things would get in their adult lives under Achilles, but with his time as connor he knows things went horrible enough for Achilles to take things more seriously. So he's ready, but not truly ready
Now growing up before and after the death of their bio family then adoption by the german couple who raised them, he helps set hope up to be a better person once tragedy struck once more. Not just in skill, but her morals, right from wrong and her blind loyalty with plea's and warnings falling to deaf ears.
To most he's mildly serious yet calm and laid back, easiest assassin on the homestead to get along with. Most recruits who get to train with him come out sore and tired, but full of pride with a goofy smile. (I love when desmond gets to act like a big brother, he can't help it- shays his brother, liams a brother, the other's are questionable at best)
(It alsi really got to me in shay's game that hope of all people didn't listen, she seems so smart and clever! Hell she IS smart and clever)
Wanna make it more tragic?
How about when they lost their parents they were separated due to their parents’ actions, who had been kind people but may have gotten in with the wrong crowd or might have accumulated too much debt from the wrong people.
Desmond, being the older of the two, promised to find Hope and told her to wait for him. Hope is left with nothing else to do but believe in her brother and she’s taken away to an orphanage while Desmond is left to ‘pay the debt’.
Hope is adopted and her adoptive parents love her but she still remembered the warmth of her brother’s hand on the top of her head, could still remember the kind smile he always had even when Hope annoyed him.
So she believed him.
She believed him and kept on waiting for him.
Then her adoptive father was killed and she and her adoptive mother were thrown out of their own home.
It’s during the time she tried to steal for medicine to save her ailing adoptive mother that he finally found her.
It’s a bittersweet reunion as she had waited for this moment for so long but she had imagined their reunion to be a sweet one. Where he would appear on their doorsteps and would embrace her tightly…
Where her adoptive parents would welcome him to their home, her adoptive mother cooking for him and her adoptive father teaching him their family business…
Not in this dank alleyway with his hand gripping her arm tightly, the surprise clear in his eyes.
Like he didn’t expect to see her here.
Like this had all been a coincidence.
She had half a mind to push him and run away.
To ask why he had taken so long to find her…
Yet…
“Patricia?”
Just one word.
A name she had not heard for a long time.
Spoken in a much deeper voice than she had grown up hearing.
Spoken with such…
Hope.
Her body moved before she could stop herself.
His hands held her like they’ve always had.
His embrace was just as warm as she remembered…
.
Unorganized Notes:
With Desmond’s help, Hope’s adoptive mother didn’t die.
Desmond had been ‘paying’ their parents debt for years by singlehandedly destroying their group. It took some time as they were all scums who had enough money to pay for decent security and Desmond had no allies or informants of his own so he had to do all the information gathering on his own (aka: the Altaïr way)
During this time, Desmond had also amassed a… following as some of the people he took out had really had sidegigs.
So, yeah, while Hope had been growing up in a safe loving home, Desmond had been ‘unintentionally’ creating his own small gang.
Hope joins the gang, of course, and it’s actually less of a gang and more of a lite Brotherhood that focused more on information gathering and causing distractions for Desmond.
Desmond isn't Desmond's biological name but the name he went with while doing his 'sidegigs'. Only Hope and Desmond know each other's biological names and they only use it when they're alone.
Desmond actually didn’t want to train Hope to be an Assassin like him because he will always see her as his that little kid who would cry for her brother whenever she tripped. Then he realized how his feelings were the same as the ones Ezio had felt about Claudia and knew that he can’t stop her. All he can do is guide her and make sure she grew up to be strong enough.
Hope's first Assassination mission was to hunt down the men who used to be her adoptive father's business partners.
So when Achilles finally finds them, they’re pretty much Assassins by their own rights and he had heard rumors of them and the immense network they held in the colonies. That was what Achilles was after.
Desmond has no reason not to join Achilles. He only heard a bit from Ratonhnhaké:ton’s memories of what happened and Achilles had been cagey, after all, only saying that the Colonial Brotherhood fell into a Templar ‘trap’.
But… Desmond has no reason to see Achilles as a mentor as well so he acts more like an unofficial Assassin (which always left a bitter taste in his mouth), it’s a small price to pay to retain his freedom from the constraints of having to listen to Achilles’ orders.
Desmond usually just visits once in a while and every Assassin in the homestead are immediately swarming him, wanting to learn from him and ask for his advice. He’s friendly to everyone and acts like a big brother to them (especially as Achilles’ recruits are usually younger than Desmond).
Hope and Shay have a more rivalry-type relationship because Desmond told Hope that Shay had potential which Hope took as a declaration of war for her brother’s attention. Shay thinks Hope is just a very… ‘aggressive’ woman.
Liam thinks Shay is dumb for not realizing that Hope only acts like that to him. Everyone has heard of Hope, Desmond’s sister and first apprentice. Among their group, she’s one of the few to actually be on the same level as an Assassin and she’s as cunning and smart as one can get. She’s also usually nice and polite and her treatment of Shay makes Liam mistakes it as… Hope having feelings for Shay!
Desmond knows Hope is acting out because she has abandonment issues but, at the same time, her rivalry with Shay was helping the two of them grow so… he’s not going to do anything other than remind Hope that she’s his own and only sister and nothing will ever change that.
Desmond is close to Achilles’ apprentices and acts like a secondary mentor + older brother to them all. Since he’s older than them (physically and thanks to the Bleeding Effect + his reincarnation bs), he tends to treat them as young ‘kids’.
Up to you if Desmond’s presence have an effect and saves Achilles’ wife and son.

Who is Hesperiah Kinslayer?
Tumblr media
Behemoth. Mountain. A Bastion.
Those are just some of the words used to describe the Pact Lieutenant Hesperiah Kinslayer. While nowhere near as famous as the storied Commander, or their guild. Hesperiah has carved a name for herself among the ranks of both the Vigil, and The Pact.
Tumblr media
Despite being a hulking 9 foot 11 inches. (302.26cm). Hesperiah is often described as sociable, yet reserved by her peers. An 11 year veteran of the Vigil, and the Pact means that she has taken part in every campaign waged by The Pact during the Dragon crisis. And carries the stories and scars to prove it.
Having joined The Vigil in 1325 at just the age of 18. Hesperiah was wild, snappy, and difficult to work it. Reclusive during her training, Hesperiah spoke nothing of her past before being recruited, often giving other recruits the cold shoulder. For most of the Zhaitan crisis, she remained a lowly foot soldier in The Vigil, and much the same during the formation of the The Pact.
It wasn't until the assault on Orr where her shell began to crack, as Hesperiah made friends with a group of Gladium that comprised the squad she was attached to. Although she still she kept much to herself, Hesperiah explained that she, too, was a Gladium. and had been since she was 15.
Hesperiah's original warband had been wiped out in an ambush set up by Flame Legion posing defectors seeking asylum. It was supposed to be a simple training exercise that quickly spiraled out of control, with even her Primus being injured in the ensuing battle. At the time, Hesperiah, still too young to properly cope, was deeply scarred by the experience.
This trauma manifested in her unstoppability during battle. Cleaving through hordes, and in some cases shrugging off wounds if it meant claiming one more dragon minion head. Her sheer size, and tenacity growing into a beacon that others could rally around. After all, it was difficult not to be inspired watching her shatter her greatsword slaying an enemy, only to cast it aside and continue the fight with her bare hands.
Due to this, Hesperiah earned her promotion to Lieutenant after the defeat of Zhaitan. Having grown into a leadership role during her time in Orr, she signed on for officer training. Further cracking the shell she surrounded herself with, as she grew comfortable with the members of her order, and the Pact. Forming deeper connections with the gladia she'd come to know, as well as members of the other orders.
In 1328, The Pact suffered a cataclysmic ambush from the Jungle Dragon, Mordermoth, while confronting him over Maguuma. This being Hesperiah's second brush with death, as she became lost in the Tangled Depths following the utter chaos and confusion. Surviving for days against Chak before eventually reuniting with The Pact at Dragon's Stand. The ordeal leaving much of her armor in tatters, causing her to fashion replacements using Leystone. Although during her time in Maguuma, Hesperiah discovered her knack for Longbows, embracing her role as a Dragonhunter.
Not much is known about what Hesperiah was up to between 1328 and 1332. As she took leave during that time, along with her Squadmates. Although before she left, she had a custom Greatsword and Longbow made for her. Much larger than the standard, and made from much stronger materials. These weapons wouldn't break under the strain of her powerful swings, and could channel her magic much more effectively.
However, after she returned from her absence in early 1332, Hesperiah was now the leader of the newly formed Kin Warband, having taken the surname of Kinslayer. Comprised of the Gladia she'd grown close to over the years. Not a single one of them speaks of the events that transpired, often stating that it is not their story to tell when asked about it.
Later that year, The Pact suffered a defeat at the hands of Kralkatorrik, after they failed to slay him at Thunderhead Peak. Again, Hesperiah showed her fierce tenacity, surviving being buried alive in the aftermath of the Elder dragon fleeing. After her third brush with death, Hesperiah developed a dark sense of humor, as well as solidifying herself among her peers as truly hard to kill...
Later still, when the Charr Civil war began. Hesperiah and her War Band of course participated on behalf of the United Legions. Although they officially had no loyalty to society that discarded them, they still felt that it was a right thing to do. Especially so, after the learning the circumstances of General Almorra's death, which infuriated Hesperiah to no end.
When The Dragon Storm happened in 1334, Hesperiah once again threw herself into the fray. Wanting to witness the end of the Twin Elder Dragons for herself, and as a quiet, personal tribute to Soulkeeper, someone she looked up to fondly in her early years in the Vigil. Once Primordus and Jormag destroyed each other, Hesperiah bid farewell to Almorra, promising to carry on her legacy, just like the rest of the order.
Which meant throwing herself headlong into the Void crisis in Cantha. The Last Elder dragon. One last fight. For Almorra...
Although she didn't take part in the direct assault on Soo-Won atop the Harvest Temple, Hesperiah did what she did best: Slay Dragon minions, and be an unshakable beacon for her allies on the battlefield.
Now a well, and truly seasoned veteran Lieutenant. While she has considered applying for a high position, as some have put in recommendations for her. But for the time being, she is content with staying where she's at. Especially now that The Pact finally has a moment to rest and breathe. Hesperiah taking an extended leave of absence to travel the world, and experience life away from the battlefields of Tyria.
Maybe one day, you will cross paths with the Kinslayer herself.

Soo,… Phrike hates the Legions and Tantalus hates the Legions, too.
How would your boy react, if Phrike would try to get him into his ranks? He is always in need of capeable people and Tantalus, as skilled assassin, would definitely be someone Phrike would have an eye on. Promising him a high rank - a bright future in his group.
Would Tantalus accept his offer or would he decline?
(@wilsons-journey)
Gonna answer this in-character. ---
Tantalus listens intently to the recruitment, a face fully serious, never betraying an emotion. That is until he hears that last part.
His expression immediately sours, scoffing and turning his head so that his scarred side is hidden, his luminous amber eyes peek from the shadow of his hat. "You had good bait there, til you mentioned ranks."
His voice shifts from interest to dismissiveness. "High rank? Bright future? Spent over a decade in the Legions slaving away for that, it's the reason they tortured me too, like hell would I willingly get into another."
Tantalus' head angles to the side, showing more of his shadowed face. "Don't get me wrong though, not saying you're just like them. I just can't stand being ruled over- Told what to do and when to do it. I'm a free charr, more than anything, my freedom is what matters most to me."
He faces forward again, and leans his elbows on his knees. "So I'm gonna have to turn down this 'recruitment.' You stick to your ways. I'll stick to mine, I work better alone anyway."
