#indie film feel
Text
i love it when a film has its guts out. when the practical effects are visceral and slimy and slightly janky and clearly made by human hands, when green screen is used as a canvas for art rather than a substitute for reality, when the sets look like theatre pieces, when the lighting is unashamedly unrealistic because fuck it - it comes from the same place as the music, when the acting is messy and unfettered by irony, when you can feel the presence of the crew just offscreen pouring in months of hard work and late nights and sweat and love. when a film stops trying to be realistic and lets itself be raw and weird and INTERESTING
edit: glad people are enjoying this post! I originally wrote it about Bunny and the Bull (2009), which is my favourite film ever and you can watch it for free on youtube and in this google drive. enjoy! :)

Looking at Wish, I just keep thinking of the people who called Frozen a 'lazy movie' because they used really similar face shapes for Anna, Elsa and their mother.
Look at the ice and snow effects in that movie. Listen to the music. Enjoy the comedy. Remember that it isn't even close to the beauty of Disney's best and yet it still remains a work of art.
Now look at Wish as the monkey's paw curls. Hey- at least they use different face shapes.

haven't seen dial of destiny yet but we watched all the other Indiana Jones movies this week and I determined that Short Round is thirteen years older than Mutt and Ke Huy Quan is fifteen years older than Shia Lebeouf. This near consistency pleases me and while I don't NEED another Indiana Jones movie with Short Round in it just Because They Can, like. they could.
Also I do kind of wanna see a ficlet where Shorty and Mutt meet and Mutt says oh yeah and who is this, and Short Round sizes him up contemptuously and says "His ELDEST."

the "I already bought tickets to go see Indy again next week" moodboard
#actually factually finalized the purchase it's happening same seats and everything lmfao#I am being very irritating abt this I'm not sorry I had so much fun today and I loved this movie to bits#and I'm so happy this is how we as fans get to close Indy's adventures like.#it didn't just feel like half-hearted fan service bullshit it was really well done which I'll be honest#I was not expecting. there are def call backs of course to the previous films#but it didn't feel like heavy handed or cheap#they really did a good job of like. making it feel authentic like. not just a shitty rehash idk for me#it felt like. so appropriate. like he's an old man now. time has passed. they don't just like wallpaper over that#it just has idk so much heart. like the old og movies it's fantastical but there's so much heart#idk I really liked it. it felt like watching the old ones. the old ones had so much heart. that's why you loved indy!#he was a smart ass but he was earnest too and he had heart and he cared and like ahhhhhhhhhh!!!#it's just. idk idk idk I feel like it's such a great close to the adventures for massive Indy nerds like myself#lmao I asked my mom tonight like when was the last time you watched any of the movies#cause you mught wanna rewatch before we go#and she was like well it has been a while cause you don't live here anymore#and I was like I know. I'm never like six months removed from the last time I watched an Indy#and she was like I know it's your religion I know#I just. I loved it. a lot. I really did. as a massive Indy nerd I really did just enjoy it a lot. more than kotcs#but I firmly believe w/o kotcs it wouldn't have been so fuckin good like omg#erin explains it all

click for pretentious film bro ranting
Why do I see some barbie fans (especially on here) create this fake feud between oppenheimer and "film bros" that is honestly only happening from their side. Yes on the most extreme end there people like Ben Shapiro who say wild stuff about barbie and try to detract from it, but I see those kinds of people as not even having a voice in this conversation. Why are you trying to give them legitimacy? And furthermore, why are you grouping other film bros in with that crowd anyway?
It's the alleged "film bros" on twitter who were the ones that was championing barbie the hardest before most current fans even knew that there was a barbie film in the first place. It's because they keep up with film news and were excited that a new Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbauch feature. The film bros that these barbie fans so staunchly hate are the ones that created barbenheimer in the first place as a way to uplift cinema and to encourage more people to go to the theater. Now obviously barbie did better numbers because it's much easier to market a 90 minute film based on a famous toy line rather than a 3 hour historical film. I'm not saying that you had to have seen oppenheimer to appreciate cinema, and there are plenty of film bros who loved barbie and didn't want to see oppenheimer (I was actually just talking to my old film prof about this, who HATES christopher nolan) and there are plenty of film bros who saw oppenheimer and disliked/didn't want to see barbie, but from what I saw film bros were still encouraging seeing both regardless of how they felt because the point was to get more people back in movie theaters.
When any criticism (fair or unfair) is levied against the barbie movie it's fans will use the "cinema created by women for women should be seen as a important" as an argument against these criticisms, and while I agree with that statement, what angers me about their usage of it is that these specific fans do not actually give a shit about cinema created by women unless it is a multi-billion dollar blockbuster. I do think that Greta Gerwig grossing over a billion at the box office is a huge accomplishment, and I think it's a great film (I gave it 5 stars on Letterboxd and cried three times) but Barbie is far from the only female led project this year, and not even the only oscar contender led by a women. Tell me, did you see Past Lives? Are you going to see Bottoms? Did you know that Molly Gordon made her directorial debut this year? I saw a post that alluded to Barbie and Oppenheimer being the oscar leads this year 💀 I'm sorry, but as much as I love both of these films, if you think the only two oscar contenders of the year are barbie and oppenheimer then I'm going to safely assume that you do not watch movies. Let's wait until the new Martin Scorsese film drops before we start making our oscar predictions, shall we.
If these fans really cared about film then they would not be picking imaginary fights with oppenheimer fans. If these fans really cared about women in film then they would actually recognize and champion some of the many other films made by women this year that does not include multi-billion dollar blockbusters.

hello love! for the Fan Fic Writer Asks may i please have 10. and 14.??? thank u x
10. Is there a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
HMM i mean in general i'm always fairly surprised when anyone reads anything i've written, let alone reacts positively, but there seems to have been a lil uptick in positivity around what's mine is yours (harry-gets-a-vag PWP) recently which i reaallly didn't expect. that fic felt like one of those slightly unhinged ideas that was exclusively for me – i guess bc i started writing it before i even posted fic so there was no expectation of readership that could have influenced its creation? so the thought that other people might actually enjoy too it is truly wild to me
14. If you could see one of your fics adapted into a visual medium such as a comic or film, which would you pick?
already answered once here but have thought about it some more and i think an auror error (the stupid fic i wrote in tongue twisters to torture @lastontheboat) could work as one of those theatre performances where the cast and audience are all a little drunk. and the actors have to take a shot every time they mess up a line. yeah i would pay a fair amount of money to watch that actually.

Saw Indy 5 last night. It was sweet, it had a lot of callbacks to the original, but it felt empty for most of it.
Saw Joy Ride today. Hysterical doesn't do it justice.
If you want to have fun, just lose your mind and wet yourself, this movie fucks absolutely.
