Fellow 90s born Indians, Remember Digimon and Beyblade?

Brahmastra is the love child of ‘Digimon, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Beyblade & Star Wars’ Jessa kuch banyenge dreams which had arranged marriage with Bollywood Love Story.

First of all I had no expectations, because from trailer. I knew Brahmastra  is visual extravaganza. It almost did deliver the promise except for too much ‘kesariya tera’ playing on loop every 2mins and a really irritating set design that to and fro from Bansali to Marvel.

Main complaint: Terrible dialogue writing. And something was really off with dialogue recording/delivery too. It felt like I was watching a masala Telugu movie with atrocious Hindi dub on Sony Max on a Sunday afternoon. No effort was put to make it impactful.

Story is so cliche, that it was obvious from trailer only. Orphan special one meets the manic pixie dream girl and grand old theme of Power Of Love. Nice idea badly executed; Do better Ayan, I know you can— I have seen Wake Up Sid when I was 17; you cant fool me.

But it was fun to watch if the audience is like me—who grew up on steady diet of anime as Ayan definitely had lot of Naruto, Digimon, Beyblade, and Dragon Ball dreams for his characters’ visual powers. I know my anime and star wars and comics so it was easy spot.

The visual depictions of power were sadly very marvelish; the hyper cracking Bisexual colours that look great on screen when characters clash. I was expecting more of Shaktiman colour tones; not like the 90s but, something less Disney colours and more homegrown.

I wanted more of the astra lore; look I love superhuman stories! And Astra wielders sound so much fun! So mythological part was shaky. Give more lore and cut out the songs! Too much songs! Nahi chaiye!

Most reviews are saying it is inspired from LOTR+HP+Marvel+Starwars! Pffft— I am telling you; IT WAS TOTALLY INSPIRED FROM ANIME THAT STARTED AIRING IN INDIA FROM LATE 90s and crowded our homes till 2010s! Ayan is totally an otaku. And I relate and appreciate it!

There many cameos! The first cameo was a surprise to me! But man the dialogues were so bad that they wasted such a great opening. I mean you literally the king of Bollywood building the story for you! But damn those badly written dialogues!

I love Mouni Roy! She did her best to be the devoted antagonist! Mouni really carried her Nagin from small screen to big screen well and made it much more! I wish we got to see her do the hiss hiss! Please keep her for the next two movies! I need her!

Alia was really a manic pixie dream girl; if she is Partvati to this Shiva! You better make her have powers or some key function in next two parts; otherwise Isha will be remembered just like Orihime for her “Kurosaki Kun” and Skura for her “Sauske-kun!”cries!

But I had loads of fun watching it, because my suspension of disbelief is commendable. I have many complaints but I am glad to finally have Indian fantasy of this scale on screen! That too in 3D! I want to know what is happening in this Astraverse! I am hooked!

P.S.- My mom hated every moment of it. And kept reminding me the entire time thar it is just like the cartoons I watch and you bet she meant One Piece!

The infamous detective returns! ‘Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine’ to arrive in cinemas on 25th August 2023

Ever since Indian anime fans thronged cinemas to catch ‘Detective Conan: The Story of Ai Haibara’, the next chapter of Detective Conan’s story has been generating a lot of buzz. And now...the wait is finally over! PVR INOX Pictures is all set to release ‘Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine’, the 26th movie in the Detective Conan franchise, on 25th August 2023. The film opened in Japan on April 14. It became the first film in the entire franchise to pass 10 billion yen.

In 1994, Detective Conan was serialized in the manga magazine, Weekly Shonen Sunday. It became hugely popular and went on to become the magazine’s longest-running series. In 1996, it began to be broadcast as a TV animation. And following that, in 1997, the film releases began in theaters.

‘Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine’ follows the thrilling escapades of Conan, a student cum detective who ingeniously solves crimes at the tip of his fingers. The action takes place at Hachijo-jima Island where ‘secret tech’ that can change the fate of the world is being invented. When a female engineer pivotal to the project is kidnapped by the sinister Black Organization, it is up to Conan and his Detective Boys to save the day.

Will Conan and team be able to save the day? Will he vanquish the Black Organization? Will the ‘secret technology’ reach the wrong hands? Gear up Indian Otakus as all these questions will be answered in the upcoming ‘Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine’.

June 18 - Manga Museum

Today I woke up to make another family mart breakfast trip (I think I have eaten the same protein bar three days in a row now) before we all headed to the manga museum. The manga museum was quite modest and there was a little funny show that demonstrated kamishibai. After the museum we sped over to a very cool napoli themed cafe that was playing really nice music on vinyl. I had the best croissant I've had so far on this trip as well as a very good americano. We next headed to lunch at a 70 year old sushi restaurant on Sanjo shopping street run by a very nice man and his wife and we had really great sushi once again. After our sushi we practically ran through the shopping street to different thrift stores to try and fit them all in before our kimono rental appointments. I got a few Diesel items including a denim jacket and I got a leather purse. I have definitely have thrifted too much to fit in my suitcase but that's a problem for the 22nd. We then had to run to our kimono rental appointment since we were kinda late but we still made it in time. We waddled around for a bit and took lots of pictures before heading to Raj's rooftop bar again which was really nice because the sun was setting as we got there. After the bar we went to get Indian food (much to Nico's disappointment) at a restaurant that Vishnu found. The food was actually very good and I even forgot to take a decent picture of it so I guess that Vishnu makes some okay recommendations. Vishnu was feeling particularly energized after dinner so we got everyone to muster the energy to go out before finally ending the night.

Today we went to the manga museum. Manga the term was first used in the 18th century to describe wood block prints done by Katsushika Hokusai. It wasn't until the 20th century that the term became more widespread due to the increase in employment opportunities as manga authors as well as the increased circulation of newspapers due to western influence. However, some argue that manga was derived from traditional Japanese graphic art from the 9th century rather than by influence from western art. This is frequently a political response to concerns about manga's negative effects on culture as well as concerns that manga negatively impacts Japans global image and creates stigma. Manga was sometimes considered shocking and unsettling to Western audiences because of the was it portrays sex and violence against women. Because of this association there is still fears today about how manga may negatively impact school age children. There are also concerns about how manga may increase violence in younger generations due to certain violent incidences such as the "otaku murders." This controversy was not really discussed in the manga museum that we visited and instead it focused more on the practical production and dissemination of manga as well as the historical development of it.
