An Examination of Blood Drinking as Sexual Allegory in Vanitas no Carte

(contains spoilers for the VNC anime and discussion of sexual assault. also, it is long :) )

This is referencing the anime alone, as I haven't read the manga. If that makes anything I say incorrect/incomplete, please correct me!

Alright, let's get into it. I've got several points here, so i'll number them.

#1: Blood drinking is an allegory for sex in VNC.

Just to make sure we're all on the same page, blood drinking in VNC is treated as a sexual allegory. It's an extremely intimate physical act which, when consensual, is pleasurable for both parties involved. (We'll get back to the consensual thing later.) When taking place in the context of a relationship, the process requires a lot of trust and represents intimacy between partners.

#1-B: Forced blood drinking is an allegory for sexual assault.

We see two occasions where Lord Ruthven drinks a person's blood without consent. Both of these times, it is framed as an act of violence and an enormous violation.

Ruthven drinks Noe's blood after drugging him with food/drink. Noe then protests that he does not consent to the blood drinking and that he wants to leave. This has a lot of parallels with real-world date rape, and is clearly shown as a violation.

Ruthven forces Chloe against wall and bites her against her will. This scene is especially framed as a grotesque violation and betrayal of their friendship, shot as if the actual bite itself is too dreadful to be seen. She immediately ends their friendship and is clearly deeply traumatised by the experience.

Another scene arguably falls under this heading, although unfortunately not in the same tone.

When Noe wakes up in Chloe's castle, she is drinking his blood. Noe responds to this very negatively, and throughout the remainder of the scene is obviously upset and feeling violated. From Noe's perspective, this scene represents a sexual assault. However, it is not treated with the same gravity as the assaults by Ruthven, with Chloe and Jean-Jacques apparently not caring that she has violated Noe's consent.

This is, sadly, accurate to a lot of portrayal of sexual assault of men. Because Chloe is female and smaller than Noe, she is not treated as threatening and violating Noe the same way that Ruthven is. I don't like this, but it does align with the allegory.

#2: Blood drinking is not ONLY an allegory for sex.

Unlike sex, drinking blood is a nourishing process. (I'm not totally clear whether it's required to sustain vampires, or if they can subsist off normal food alone. Please say if you know!)

In vampire society, drinking another's blood often signifies a close social bond and deep trust between people, but does not necessarily represent a sexual bond between them. This can best be seen in the fact that young vampires drink blood in scenes that are not framed as sexual at all (and thank goodness for that!!).

It can also be an act of violence (divorced from the sexual assault allegory referenced above), used to harm or even kill a person, or a display of power.

Another reason vampires may drink blood is to exert their powers.

#2-B: For vampires with blood-based powers, blood drinking is rarely sexual allegory.

For Lord Ruthven and Noe, blood drinking is how they use certain powers.

The first time Noe drinks anybody's blood does not align with sex, because its primary purpose is to gain a person's memories. It is also often a very traumatic experience for Noe, not pleasurable for him or the person he is drinking from. It is only with people whose memories he has already seen (e.g., Louis and Domi), that the interaction represents emotional and physical intimacy.

This is particularly relevant when it comes to the scene with Mikhail, because if that scene was a sexual allegory it would be Deeply Disturbing. However, for both parties, the blood drinking is a transaction - Mikhail wants Noe to see his memories, Noe wants to save Domi. (There are a couple of uncomfy shots of Mikhail's bare shoulders, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.)

However, for Ruthven in particular, blood drinking is a sexual allegory for his victims, as his attacks clearly represent sexual assault for them. For him, it is merely a way to exact power over them. This can arguably be considered part of the sexual allegory as well, but i thought it relevant.

#3: Sexual pleasure is sometimes (but not always) derived from blood drinking.

Sometimes, blood drinking goes beyond sexual allegory and becomes a sexual act. This is particularly true for Vanitas, and seems to be the case for Dominique when Noe drinks from her. It's unclear whether this sexual pleasure is a biological effect of the blood drinking, or these two just happen to derive pleasure from such an intimate act. There are definitely cases where sexual pleasure is not derived from blood drinking, and the vampire feeding usually does not experience sexual pleasure. Maybe Vanitas and Domi are just kinky.

This fact exists separately to the sexual allegory previously discussed. Just because a scene is a sexual allegory, does not mean that it is actually sexual.

#4: Why is this interesting?

This is interesting (to me) because it's a particularly complicated and interesting example of an idea being represented both literally and allegorically, and how allegory can be abandoned when it conflicts with the specific details of worldbuilding.

It's fine to be disappointed about not seeing the Lords, but dear God stop shitting on the DLC because of it. Just because you wanted to see them doesn't mean it was gonna happen. This DLC isn't about the Lords, and it never was. It's about Rose. It's about her journey to accepting her powers, accepting that she's a little weird but it's worth it because she can do cool things and she has the best dad ever. Overcoming her insecurities, learning to care for herself and know she's worth love because Ethan loves her so fucking much. It's about Rose learning more about herself. It's about Rose getting to talk to her dad, just once. Getting to hear him say "I love you". It's about Rose learning more about the events that led to her father sacrificing himself to save her, which she was apparently never told. It's about Rose gaining confidence in herself, in her abilities. It's about Rose finding a passion to fight back, to survive, to not conform. It was never about the Lords.

Speculative Secrets for Strangetown Premades

This is just me speculating what the premade sims of Strangetown who weren’t in the Sims 2 PSP secrets might have if they were included. In this version, I’m imagining that Ajay, Erin and Kristen live in Paradise Place as roommates. 

Olive lives in the Meetinghouse with Ophelia. Nervous managed to escape from the Beakers and now wanders the Deadtree area.  Buck, now a teen lives in the barracks and is training to become a soldier like his brothers. Chloe and Lola were “convinced” to move into the barracks by Buzz Grunt like the Smiths.

Buck Grunt

(Personal) Adores fashion and loves to give himself and others makeovers.

(Intimate) Has a crush on Jill Smith but is too shy to admit it.

(Dark) Once broke his father’s computer in order to gain Buzz’s attention. 

Ajay Loner

(Personal) Has often bored other sims to sleep due to his droning voice.

I am very tempted to drink today. I am realizing that when I have confrontation that needs to be said/done, I often have to put it off for long periods of time because my partner often works opposite hours of me. And I find that sitting on the anxious thoughts really instigates my desire to drink and be distracted so I am not warping up a hole of incorrect conclusions or fixating on the troubles of the future. I drink also sometimes because I know he will be busy, and so I often go out with friends so I am not home alone. Even when I am alone sometimes I drink (to excess often) just to not be alone. Realizing this has helped me to push off the feeling of drinking today. Maybe I do really have a problem.

The only way I can put off the anxious thoughts right now is by knowing that in a few hours I can get the information off my chest; right now I need to focus on something else. So I am going to spend some time working for another hour. I needed to get some focused writing done on my paper anyway since I did not spend time on that today.

In terms of health stuff, today I ate fine, with some additional oreo snackage because I should indulge once in a while in the truffles I made for the roomies, and I was able to get up early enough and do a decently hard HIIT routine + ab workout from Chloe Ting. Tomorrow I will be back to weights with Caroline Girvan, and am on the last week. It's well-timed, since I will soon be back home for the holidays. I haven't decided if I will work out while at home. Maybe? There's a nearby gym that's pretty good, and I have gotten used to the feeling of working out in the morning and sitting at home working the rest of the day.

I am a little nervous about coming home, because either a) I will lose muscle/gain weight on vacation, or b) I will really have a hard time eating anything because my parents are both on very strict diets these days. My mom is very much an undiagnosed orthorexic, but my step-dad recently had a heart attack and was diagnosed with coronary artery disease. Every time I talk to them, it's about all the things they can't eat. Which is a little triggering to me.

At any rate; Pros: avoided drinking, processed why I am feeling anxious and have a plan for expelling it later in a healthy way, and had a reasonably productive day. Cons: my nap earlier and currently being on the computer working may keep me up later than I would like, setting me back a bit tomorrow. I will probably work from home anyway, but the fully dark days between 4pm - 8am make it hard to get anywhere in the morning to begin with.

Module 1: Latinx Representation in Media

Throughout the media, the Latinx community is continuously underrepresented and if they are, most characters are developed around stereotypes. Instantly, I thought about Beverly Hills Chihuahua which was probably the only, if not, first exposer to Latinx culture I ever absorbed growing up. This movie came out in the years 2008, and I believe this whole movie, each character is represented by negative stereotypes. For instance, this movie is based around two chihuahuas, Chloe and Papi, where Chloe lives in Beverly Hills, has spoiled attitudes and her owner is a rich white women. While Papi, is represented as a lovestruck Latino who would do anything for Chloe and his owner being their landscaper. This description alone has so many stereotypes and the movie continues where any character whom classifies as Latinx has the thickest Latinx accent, the dramatic accents that do not capture the turn culture of Latinx. Another thing, that stood out to me the most was the fact of how many times these chihuahuas were asked if they could speak Spanish due to them being raised in America. That since they are Latinx they instantly know Spanish? This is a big stereotype the community faces, overall this movie 100% is based on white stereotypes and trying to underrepresent true Latinx culture. 

A movie that contradicts Beverly Hills Chihuahua and that represents/celebrates Latinx culture is Encanto. This movie came out the most recent and in my opinion is the first movie I have seen that has broke barriers for Latinx roles and representation of Colombian culture. I have not had much exposer to Latinx culture and after watching Encanto, I could tell the movie was not based around disgusting stereotypes. For instance, the movie has authenticity while correctly portraying the beauty of the food, colors, and family values within Latinx cultures. There is also so much more diversity in Encanto than movies made in the early 2000s, where the characters all had different features and backgrounds rather than created around incorrect representation. Encanto educated me on Colombian culture and now gives young Latinx individuals the opportunity to see their culture represented correctly through the media (movie).  

Overall, had interesting main points highlighting how Latinx individuals appear in all kinds of pop culture like TV, film, animation, comic books, video, games, art, music, and many more but still misrepresented which I explain in later posts. This chapter specifically focuses on Latinx within TV where their culture is perceived based on negative stereotypes, which creates the wrong image of what Latinx really stands for. With this, Latinx individuals have grown up watching representations of themselves and their culture not through Latinx perspectives which creates challenges relating to identity. In other words, English language TV reinforces popular stereotypes relating to Latinx and their history while Spanish language TV concepts connect to the issues regarding race, gender, class, and even global politics. The chapter also discusses the slow gains in visibility where in earlier years you would see little to none Latinx representations, but since the 2000s the numbers are rising of Latinx characters on the screen while their stories being told through their own point of view. For instance, the difference between Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Encanto are so significant and show the change of Latinx representation.

The Forest: Chapter 1

(1. Giant)

This was a giant that lived in the forest. Or at least there were rumors of one. Rumors of strange things happening in the forest. Hikers disappearing, trees getting knocked over with no wind, giant footprints. Most people didn’t believe the rumors, believing them to be just as likely as Bigfoot. Chloe believed all of them through. That’s why she never wanted to step foot in this forest. Unfortunately, at the moment, she didn’t have much of a choice. The angry mob was gaining ground closer behind her.

“Burn the werewolf!” One of them screamed. Though it was dark, the torch he was holding perfectly illuminated his face. His face was red with anger, his eyes gleaming with malice. Even if Chloe couldn’t see his face behind her, she would have recognized that voice from anywhere. Who wouldn’t recognize the voice of their own father?

“Please father!” she pleaded as she ran, “I’m still me! How could you do this to your own family!?”

“You are no family of mine, beast!” he growled. “Not since you infected my son and took over the mind of him!”

“I’m still me!” she cried, praying for him to understand. “And I was never your son!”

Part of her mind wanted to slap her, was correcting her dad’s misgendering of her really important when her life was on the line? But the other part of her mind argued back. Her dad would never accept her anyway, now that she was a werewolf, if she was the gender he wanted her to be or not. It may have sounded stupid, but if she was going to die, she didn’t want to die pretending to be someone she wasn’t.

Her father ignored her last words, just continuing to glare angrily as he ran toward her. It didn’t matter however, the rest of the mob took over speaking for him.

“Quiet beast!”

“We won’t have mercy on you!”

“We won’t let you terrorize our home!”

Hearing the words made Chloe want to cry, but she didn’t have time for that now. She had to lose them now, she would have time to cry later. She weaved through the trees hoping desperately she would lose them. She looked behind her as she ran, sighing with some relief as she realized her plan was working. But it wasn’t enough, some of the mob was gone now, but the smarter of them were able to still follow her. She couldn’t run much longer, but she wasn’t willing to give up.

Her luck was running out however, she realized as she started to trip and stumble, her body lethargic from exhaustion. The last of her luck ran try when her foot got caught in a mole hole. She faceplanted into the dirt. Not ready to die, Chloe quickly scrambled to get back up but found a weight on her back preventing her from doing so.

She strained her head to see who was stopping her and regretted her decision immediately. Chloe almost cried when she realized that her last memories were going to be the murderous eyes of her own father. He was holding her down, his right hand grasping a silver blade that found its way against her neck.

“Hurry up!” she could hear him yelling, “Get over here! I’m going to need your help carrying his body!”

Chloe cried.

Evelyn woke up to the sound of screaming. She yawned groggily, as she slowly opened her eyes. It wouldn’t be the first time she woke up to screaming, that tended to happen when humans saw her, but it didn’t make it any less annoying. But something was different this time. The humans weren’t screaming at her, they couldn’t be, they weren’t even close enough for her to see them yet.

Intrigued, she crept closer to the voices. But as the voices became louder and more coherent, Evelyn’s curiosity quickly turned to horror.

She heard a gruff voice yelling and loud sobs.

“Hurry up! Get over here! I’m going to need your help carrying his body!”

Ice filled Evelyn’s veins. No, humans weren’t out murdering their own right? Not out here!?

But the sight she saw, filled her heart with horror and dread. There was a crowd of humans surrounding someone. That person was pinned down by a much larger man, who was holding something sharp and gleaming against their neck. Was that a dagger!?

“Please dad, don’t do this!” The sobbing person pleaded, tears streaming down their face.

Evelyn finally snapped. She knew she shouldn’t reveal herself, but what other choice did she have? How horrible would you have to be to take your own child’s life?

“STOP!” she screamed much louder than she intended to.

All of the humans in the mob snapped their heads up to look at her with surprise, their bodies shaking with fear when their eyes landed on her. They screamed and ran, leaving their victim alone at the mercy of the giantess.

Said victim immediately tried to stand up when they realized they weren’t being held down anymore. They let out a strangled gasp as they fell over, one foot still stuck in a small hole in the ground. The person looked up at Evelyn with so much fear, it made her feel sick.

As soon as they made eye contact, the person immediately looked away and desperately tugged at their leg fruitlessly. Evelyn looked down at them with guilt, she didn’t mean to scare them.

“Hey,” she said as softly as she could. “Please don’t cry, I’m not going to harm you. I promise.”

Speaking seemed to be the wrong decision, as for the second she spoke the human whimpered and pulled at their leg harder.

Evelyn bit her lip, trying to decide the best thing to do. She tried slowly backing away. The human flinched when she moved but looked up at her with confusion when they realized that the giantess was moving farther away instead of closer.

Evelyn decided to try and speak again. This time the human flinched but stopped trying to get their leg out of the hole.

“Hey, my name is Evelyn, what’s yours?”

Marinette’s mistake

I saw many post about which was Marinette's mistake in Chat Blanc. The one that the sinopsis told us about. Let’s make some things clear:

1. Marinette wasn’t the only one who made a mistake, but she was the firts one to do it in this episode.

2. The others were Adrian and Gabriel. By far, Gabriel’s was the most cruel of them and the big one in my opinion.

Now, what was Marinette’s mistake? Well for my point of view she made two: She reveal her identity to someone (which is against the rules she accepted to follow and as we see in Ladybug, Camelion and Zombisu, is really necesary since HM can akumatized anyone, hero or not) and the second one (and this is the important one) she used her miraculous for personal gain. That mistake leads to the other one.

We have examples of bad things happening for the incorrect use of a miraculous. Gabriel using the butterfly miraculous (now you know why he always failed). Chloe using the bee miraculous for the first time. Adrien with the snake miraculous, Ladybug in Volpina, Master Fu in feast. All of them using the miraculos for personal issues (revenge, popularity, power), ending with disastrous situations.

This is confirmed in Love Eater, when Ladybug picks Kagami only for keep her away from Adrian. It wasn't not picking Chloe, it was this. Personal reasons.

But why Ladybug still gives the gift to Adrien as Ladybug? Because without her name on it there is not benefit for Marinette herself. It is no longer a way to show her feelings, is simply a gift to make Adrian happy on that day.

This could mean that Marinette will only reach Adrian as Marinette. Without the help of her miraculous, because it can’t be used for that. And at the same time, Adrian will reach Ladybug by reaching Marinette. He can’t keep using his miraculous or superhero persona to flirt with her. He should use those things to be a good superhero, save Paris and suport the team and Ladybug. If they fall in love during this time, it wouldn’t be for the use of the miraculous because netheir of them were using them for that reason.

So yes, Marinette made the firts mistake, then was Adrian and then was Gabriel. It wasn't Marinette's fault because it wasn't her intention, but in the end, it was a mistake, the one thing that could lead to the future with Chat Blanc

ARTIST THEFT RANT -WARNING-

Please be aware there is a user named Chloe Disney I've been suspicious of her acts for awhile and noticed she's "white lying" around other people. First off this person added me saying

They literally added me to ask me to buy them a cosplay. Then when I didn't they removed me and blocked me.

They unblocked me acting like nothing happened and made an excuse after they found out I was the admin of the big InuYasha group. So I figured it was just some little girl being innocent and upset about a costume. No big deal right?

But it doesn't stop there ;

Chloe posted about how she DESIGNED the InuYasha shirts from Hot Topic. Which I told her is incorrect. I said no G.E. did alot of the InuYasha shirts. They are located in California. We went at it back in forth, I muted her temporarily. She apologized. Moving on. She wrote sappy good things about me trying to gain my respect.

Then, after I posted about reviewing my InuYasha sake bottle. She "suddenly" did as well claiming her bottle was broken in moving. Yet she posted a stock photo from Google. Weird. Then deleted her own post.

She posted another time saying she got back from her trip from Japan saying she got some InuYasha shirt that was CLEARLY from AliExpress. That corny dye sublimated shirt that's really thin that is orange on the outside and white on the inside. Yeah. Okay I figured maybe she has a mental disability. She deleted her post herself anyway. She did this nearly each time she made a post.

My friend RedRobeLover told me that Chloe "made" her an icon. It was actually stolen from my alternate YouTube channel. I have the original images with dates created as well. She took my icon, said she made it and slapped a watermark over it to give it to someone. Dang.

Then. She posted about a Kagome plush saying she made it to sell to make money for her mom who has cancer which she deleted shortly after. I found out that months later was lying about that because I stumbled on this from a shop app -

Yeah. That's not her doll. She did NOT make it.

And now she went so far as to try to claim @ayuuniiart as her OWN design and to not "steal" it.

She obviously used the innocent tattoo text post as bait to not be automatically banned from pending post with STOLEN artwork.

Mod Danielle even spoke up about her experience with this girl YEARS ago stating Chloe wanted her InuYasha wig for $50 dollars. A wig Danielle used multiple wefts and hand crafted herself asking while shorting herself for all the time spent as $150. And trying to guilt Danielle into selling it to her for $50 saying "I have cancer". She's used that excuse to try to get people to GIVE her things. Saying her house burned down or she has cancer.

As prior to rules stand this was her final warning and she is now banned. I do hope any other groups she is in does the same.

Please don't fall for her tricks or guilt.

There’s something exciting about sitting on top of the academy rooftop, despite Bewitched being used to running and swinging over the city all the time. Right now, she bides her time and can appreciate just how small and ant-like everyone looks from this perspective. It reminds her that the problems of her past life will be just as petty and meaningless after her plans come to fruition.

The students flood the schoolyard, none of them the wiser about what’s to come. She waits until all three of her potential targets enter the area - Adrien rushing in last and going over to Alya - and while doing so, charges up a red energy into her left hand. In the meantime, she overhears a glimpse of the conversation that they have, including a few moments where Nino actually called Adrien out for his behavior.

Hm. Perhaps I’ll spare him a cruel fate.

Once ready, she points her fingers like a gun in Lila’s general direction and fires.

All of the girls surrounding the liar - Rose, Juleka, Mylene and two girls from another class - shriek at the sight of Lila getting blasted. Sure enough, all of the attention now comes to Bewitched.

“I hope you all had a good morning, because it’ll be the last time any of you know good fortune.”

She allows for a few moments of collective gasps and hurried studying of her new form. No one, it seemed, could believe that it was actually her standing there above them. Even Lila, still frozen from her blast, has her thoughts immediately betrayed by her facial expressions.

But from high above, all of their judgments and stares mean nothing. It’s only fair considering she apparently meant nothing to them when she was a good and fair princess. The only expressions she finds intriguing, are the ones realizing just how much they messed up this time.

“M-Marinette?”

She practically rolls her eyes at the sound of this name. Damn, did he always sound this annoying? She glowers at the pathetic, wannabe knight, and dictates, “I am not Marinette. I am Bewitched. And to those who cursed me,” she pauses to cast venomous glances at both Lila and Adrien, giving her a glorious moment of seeing the two squirm, “Well, allow me to return the favor.”

The burst of red energy cackles around Lila, and the liar is forced to turn her entire body toward Bewitched. Her mouth and hands tremble, and she looks like she’s on the verge of tears.

“P-Please, Marinette,” she begs, “I-It doesn’t have to be like this!”

“Oh, it’s too late for that,” Bewitched cooes, “You can’t simply return to this school, lie to everyone, and then threaten me in the bathroom for not following your lead. And painting me to look like the envious one?” she clucks her tongue, “That’s just tasteless, Lie-la.”

Yet another collective gasp erupts across the schoolyard. All of the girls that just moments ago, were fawning over the Italian, are now studying her with raised eyebrows. Bewitched isn’t so pompous as to believe that the girls realize the lies all on their own. No, she predicts Lila’s next actions quite easily.

“That’s not true! I never lied!”

Bewitched can only laugh as she says her line, word for word. What a predictable turn of events.

By this time, Alya already has her phone out and is recording the entire interaction. Excellent.

“I’m not sure I really believe you. So, allow for me to fix that.” The red energy around Lila flares brighter than before, blinding anyone who stands too close to her. The girl group has all evacuated at least twenty feet away from the Italian. “Lila Rossi, you are now cursed to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth. Anytime you try and speak a lie, you will choke on your own words until the truth comes out.”

The red flash dissipates, leaving Lila only with a red symbol on her forehead - the Chinese symbol for “cursed”. When she realizes this, her hands race up to cover it.

“W-What did you do to me?”

“Excuse you, I’ll be asking the questions around here,” she scoffs. God, how did none of these people get sick of Lila’s whiny, cowering attitude all the time? She proclaims to be related to top martial artists and bodyguards, not to mention a superhero whose position she inherited, have secret training, but oh no, someone come save her, please! People actually eating this up though and not getting tired of all the bragging is the most tragic part. But after today, that will change. Smirking, she crosses her arms over her chest, hiding her hands so as to gather more energy. “Tell me, Lila. Have you really met Ladybug?”

She lets out a breath. “Oh, of course I have. We’re best frie-” The gagging is immediate and her hands drop from forehead to around her throat. Some of the girls that ran away earlier, are now back surrounding Lila, trying to help her stand up.

“Marinette!” Rose squeaks, “Make it stop! You’re hurting her!”

“She’s only hurting herself,” Bewitched shrugs, “If she’d only tell the truth about her relationship with Ladybug, then it’ll stop. So Lila, tell us the truth. When did you really meet Ladybug for the first time?”

The panting slows down a bit, but tears still form in the corner of the girl’s eyes. Honestly, is her pride and reputation so important that she would refuse to tell the truth? How pathetic. Hawkmoth honestly chose to akumatize this girl twice?

“A-At the park…” she gasps, “It was m-my first day… here… I was with… A-Adrien. S-She got mad at me… for lying about her on Alya’s blog.”

The liar collapses to the ground, clearly trying to keep herself from retching. Satisfied with her response, she turns her attention to Alya and Nino. She almost frowns when she realizes that Adrien is long gone, and doing a quick scan of the courtyard, Chloe, Kagami and Felix are also gone.We’ll just have to fix that, won’t we? she notes, feeling the warmth of her energy charged finger guns.

“Well, did you get that, Ladyblogger? It turns out the whole time you were reporting about Lila and Ladybug’s legendary friendship, you were getting played for a fool the entire time. Someone who refuses to fact check and blindly believes that they’re right and yet gets fame and attention for it is just asking to be cursed.”

Before anyone can object, she fires the red beam at Alya. For good measure, she also fires a pink beam from her right hand at Nino. The couple exchange a horrified glance, trying to move toward one another, but Bewitched will not allow it.

“Alya Cesaire. You are now cursed to be wrong about everything. Every decision you make, every word you utter, whether you mean it to or not, will be incorrect. No one will ever be able to take you seriously again.”

Again, the light disappears, and the symbol appears on her forehead. Satisfied, she then turns to Nino.

“As for you, Nino Lahiffe, I’ve decided to spare you. You could have done better at defending my honor, but you at least tried, unlike a supposed best friend of mine. I’m willing to give you a second chance as one of my familiars.”

The pink light overtakes him and transforms him. His outfit converts from his usual street wear, to all black attire. Jeans, shirt, jacket… his glasses are now sunglasses, and his cap is on backwards, with cat ears present. A bit cartoony for her tastes, but it works with her general aesthetic. The chain belt tail is a nice touch though.

“Marinette, stop this!” Alya shouts, trying to run toward her. She only trips over her feet. Sitting herself back up, she clears her throat. “I know that this is just a ploy to get everyone to turn against Lila! There’s no way she’s lying!”

If she hadn’t already been akumatized, Bewitched would have predicted a butterfly being sent her way by now. Thankfully, the students in the courtyard below all see reason and merely shake their heads at Alya’s words. It feels so nice to finally be believed for once.

That doesn’t mean she’ll spare them all.

Still, it wouldn’t hurt to have a few more familiars at her side.

Some of the students start running away, so she needs to be quick in her decision making. Marc Anciel starts running toward Nathaniel. He is one of the few people to not buy into Lila’s pack of lies, and actually seems grateful for her help. He's lacking in the self-confidence department, but that’s easily adjusted. When the pink beam hits him, his outfit becomes not too dissimilar to that of Nino’s, though his cat ears are sewn onto his hoodie.

Aurore Boureal stands in front of a classroom door, ushering other students inside. How noble and brave. The two of them hadn’t interacted much, but Bewitched always sort of liked Aurore, and could relate to her. She knew what it was like to have to juggle so many activities and responsibilities, and how draining it could for no one to appreciate her best efforts. What a fitting candidate for her familiar.

Aurore’s outfit maintains the shape of her dress, but also gives her a pair of shorts and plain stockings. She owns some fishnet gloves, cutting off at the knuckles and a cat ear headband. The parasol she so iconically carries is black with white cat heads, and she uses it to close the classroom door, before pointing it at students that dare try to approach.

Most of the students are gone by this point, even Alya and Lila who are now free to move about. Still, she doesn’t want to settle for just any old people to serve as her trustworthy familiars - they have to be worthy, unlike that troubling Chat Noir. Her eyes fall on Juleka, and sure enough, the goth girl is now a part of her pack. Perhaps she believed Lila’s lies as well, but she was also Luka’s younger sister - she could afford to show a little mercy in her case. Not to mention that her outfit is already perfect for a familiar, so she just gains some cat-themed accessories.

The effects of Alya’s curse are to her benefit, though, Already, Bewitched sees her ushering everyone into the classroom. Honestly, did she think that would be an ideal location? From the look on her face, that doesn’t seem to be the case, but Bewitched isn’t complaining.

She commands her familiars to go forward.

An essential lesson in any form of martial art is self-control. Competitive matches could get heated, but a practitioner always held back a certain degree of power and force in their attacks. It was the difference between fierce competition and bloodsport.

Even as Riposte, Kagami has never wanted to throttle Adrien as violently as she does now, ignoring all of the rules of competition. The only thing holding her back at this point is Felix’s pointed glare at the clueless Agreste. And even that is only helping a little.

The three of them are panting furiously, trying not to gag at the odors radiating in the sewers. Her only wish at this point is for Luka to meet up with them, and for them to find all sort of shelter to come up with a plan to properly save Marinette.

But for now…

“Congratulations, Adrien Agreste,” Kagami scowls, “You’ve managed to make one of the kindest, most hard working girls in our entire school into the most vengeful akuma Hawkmoth has ever created. I thought Chloe Bourgeois was reckless with her bullying, but at least she attempted to change her ways. You on the other hand…”

“You’re on a whole new level of stupid,” Felix adds on, “Did you honestly think that Marinette was going to want your pushy, obsessive behavior in a relationship? You know better than anyone that she hates bullies.”

“I’m not a bully!” he objects.

“Oh? Then what would you call yourself then? A hero? No, I don’t think you’re worthy of that title anymore,” Kagami barks, “You know if it were my decision to make, you wouldn’t even have that ring anymore.”

His eyes widened. Even Felix couldn’t contain his surprise at the statement, his hands shaking.

“You mean to say… that this obsessive, entitled doormat of a human being… is Chat Noir?”

“Y-You’re not supposed to know that!” Adrien exclaims, “H-How did you-”

“I had my suspicions, but your reaction confirmed it. Not to mention, when Ladybug decided to take a break, her reasons and story was awfully familiar to Marinette’s,” she sighs, “That means you went to that journalist girl and made her write stories and articles trying to get you two to date…”

Oh god. Images of Marinette scrambling across the school yard, plastering fake smiles, attempting to keep her voice even and level, anxiously reading from her phone only to hide it from the three of them… screw keeping her composure, Kagami wants nothing less to vomit then and there. Just what the hell snapped in this kid’s mind to make him act out the way he did?

For a moment, she weighs the idea that maybe she might be at fault. Had she tried veering Adrien away from Marinette on the ice skating date, might this all have been averted?

No, she reminds herself. It doesn’t matter the reason for his obsessive behavior. It’s still wrong. She glances over at Felix to remind herself of that. He’d point out just how irrational that all was.

Neither her nor Marinette were responsible for this temper tantrum .

She’s not sure how he managed to do it, but Luka has somehow managed to find them in the sewers, and leaps over to them. He’s completely winded, and Kagami can’t help but wonder just how far he had to run to get here. The fact that he made it here so quickly too doesn’t do much to ease her anxieties, either.

“What did I miss?” he asks in between breaths.

“Apparently, Mr. Model Behavior here is actually Chat Noir,” Felix scowls, “And not only has been playing the part of the Nice Guy to Marinette as a civilian, but also as a so-called hero. Hence, our current situation.”

Luka is one of the softest, most gentle souls Kagami has ever known. From time to time, she teases him about this, and her and Felix would refer to Luka and Marinette as cotton candy or marshmallows for their sweet and silly behavior.

But Luka once admitted to having a bit more impulsive, and angry side. This was as a result of him having problems using the right words to speak. He often kept this in check through meditation and his music. When he felt like screaming, he listened to Jagged Stone or heavier music and just let it all out. He worked hard to keep it under control and Kagami never would have suspected his problem unless he told her about it.

The flash of anger that races across his eyes is still a surprise to her.

“What the hell were you thinking, Adrien?”

“Woah, take it easy there-”

Luka slamming his hand across the wall is enough to make them all collectively jump. “Shut the hell up. Don’t tell me what to do. You didn’t take it easy on Marinette when you decided to ruthlessly pursue her into being your girlfriend. You remember that day at the ice rink?” The scowl in the back of his voice starts to dissipate a bit. Kagami can’t help but wonder if Luka is actually on the verge of tears from everything. “I told Marinette to go after you, not because I wanted her to, but because I thought it would make her happy. I cared about her a lot, but I knew for a fact that she wasn’t mine to control. Knowing that you went out of your way to hurt her for your own selfish purposes…” he looks away, his voice faltering, “Damn, you really know how to sicken a guy.”

“You’re just jealous that she confessed to me and not you,” Adrien retorts.

“As I recall,” Felix interrupts, “ You rejected her. It seems you were only interested in her once you found out she was Ladybug.”

Luka lifts his face up and regards Adrien with an even harder glare. “What?”

“Enough,” Kagami scowls, rubbing her temples. After this entire situation was fixed, she was going to get herself a nice pot and a half of tea to alleviate the headache she was going to have. “This isn’t going to get us anywhere. Adrien,” she spits, regarding him with a cold glare, “You and I will go and get Chloe. Luka and Felix, I’m leaving this with you.” From her inside jacket pocket, she pulls out the snake miraculous, “Only use it if you have to. See if you can calm Marinette down from her emotional state.”

“I should be the one to go to Marinette,” Adrien mutters, trying to get away.

“Marinette is looking to give you the worst curse she can muster,” Kagami points out, “Going in without backup is the dumbest idea you have, and you’ve had plenty of those today.” The boy has the nerve to pout, but she fights back the urge to retort any further. “Luka… are you going to be alright?”

His eyes are closed, and he lets out a breath. She knows that later he’ll probably be blasting Jagged over the Seine, but with Felix gently touching his shoulder, Luka sighs and let’s it go. “I’ll be fine. If we can just help Marinette... “

“We’ll manage something,” Felix says assuredly, “Hurry up and get Queen Bee. We’re going to need all of the help we can get.”

Longg and Tikki pop out of her pocket, only giving her a silent nod of agreement. With everyone on the same page, the two groups split up, and Kagami only hoped that Chloe managed to keep herself hidden away from Bewitched.

Chrysalis, Consequence : Max’s Journey and Choices

Preface: Some of the choices listed here are not in the game. They may not be canon, but they are in character for my interpretation of Max. This is only meant to reference the game’s story alone and give some insight into Max and her choices, some of which tie intimately into other characters’ reactions and fates. Please don’t take this as me pushing my interpretation onto your characters. If you have a muse who features in the game, you are more than welcome to come plot with me about how characters like Nathan, Chloe, Victoria, and Kate may handle things differently/took a different route than what I have described. Episode 1 - Chrysalis one.   Shaken from watching Chloe’s death and subsequent resurrection, Max confesses to Principal Wells that she saw Nathan with a gun. two.   In lieu of rigging the paint can, Max instead messes with the sprinkler system to soak Victoria’s cashmere. A guilt-ridden Max then does her best to comfort Victoria after ruining her afternoon. While searching for a way to prove to Juliet that Dana didn’t cheat, she refuses the opportunity to reorganize Victoria’s selfie wall. Dana’s pregnancy test remains untouched, with Max only aware that Dana and her ex-boyfriend Logan had falling out. three.   Max erases the crude insult on Kate’s slate. She intervenes on Kate’s behalf upon discovering security guard David M.adsen harassing her friend. four.   Ever the nosey one, Max snoops through David’s surveillance system and files. Her sleuthing skills aren’t quite up to par, though, as she leaves evidence behind. When Max’s impromptu reunion with Chloe is interrupted by David, she takes her friend’s advice to hide. But Max’s anxiety skyrockets as hostilities between parent and child escalate, leading her to come out of hiding and take the heat for Chloe. five.   Max saves the bluejay outside of the lighthouse, something that brings her comfort after learning that Chloe has stolen her step-father’s gun. Episode 2 - Out of Time one.   Another day, another instance of victim-blaming shenanigans; Max erases the URL to the V.ortex C.lub video in the girl’s bathroom. After a nerve-wracking confrontation with Victoria, Max returns a borrowed book back to Kate. With her friend clearly depressed over the bullying, the photographer gently questions her about what had happened the night of the video. Fearing that Kate has been assaulted, she urges her friend to report her experience to the police. Kate’s mention of Nathan’s involvement, coupled with Chloe’s previous experience with the Prescott heir leads Max to view him with increased suspicion.   two.   After using her powers to befriend Taylor, Max is faced with an even more daunting task---saying no to a man. Despite Warren’s insistence, she refuses his invitation, feeling sick from her previous discussion with Kate. three.   Max taking the blame for Chloe earns her an earful from Joyce at the diner. While waiting for breakfast, Max convinces her estranged friend that she has powers. Max takes a call from a distraught Kate before they leave, much to Chloe’s chagrin. Her attitude causes Max to reflect on the value of their friendship, questioning whether Chloe is still the same person she loved. four.   The presence of Chloe’s gun stirs up Max’s anxiety. During “target practice” Chloe is accidentally shot, prompting Max to rewind and ask to stop. After experiencing a combination anxiety attack and vision, Max and Chloe are confronted by Frank. As tensions rise and Chloe demands to know where Frank found Rachel’s necklace, Max pulls out the gun to defend her friend. Whatever bravado she has in the moment fades instantly; Frank rightfully calls her bluff and swipes the gun. Chloe’s resentment is keenly felt by Max long after she saves her friend’s life on the train tracks. five.   Freezing time allows Max to reach the rooftop before Kate jumps. She convinces Kate to live by appealing to the strength of their friendship, promising to bring the culprits behind the assault to justice, and asking Kate not to jump for the sake of her sisters. Pulling Kate into a tight embrace, Max and she cry together in the rain. six.   Going off Kate’s earlier testimony, Max chooses to blame Nathan for her friend’s s.uicide attempt. Having previously reported Nathan for having a gun, he is suspended, and Max leaves the office emotionally strung out but triumphant. Episode 3 - Chaos Theory one.   Max argues passionately against Chloe taking money from the school’s accessibility fund for disabled students. Having borne the brunt of society’s ableism as a young autistic woman, Max comes away convinced that Chloe does not appreciate the value of accessibility and inclusion. The disgreement drives a wedge in their relationship, with Max left depressed and alienated from her former childhood friend. two.   The morning after their great escape to Chloe’s house, Max kisses Chloe after she dares Max to do it. The decision comes out of Max questioning her sexuality, and a desperation to reconnect in some significant way with her childhood friend after their argument. Feeling discomfort after having kissed Chloe in Rachel’s clothes, Max trades in the flannel and torn jeans for her outfit from the previous night. three.   Unbeknownst to Joyce, Max deletes the message on her answering machine about the break-in. After yet again snooping in on David’s business, Max sides with Chloe during the M.adsen family’s argument. four.   While looking for a way to gain access to Frank’s RV at the diner, Max takes the time to warn a homeless woman about the storm and save Alyssa from minor disaster---again. Having lured P.ompidou out of the RV with a bone thrown in the parking lot, Max does what she does best: snoop. five.   Max leaves Chloe’s confiscated gun untouched, choosing to let Frank keep it after Chloe’s near-fatal stunt in the Junkyard. Episode 4 - D.ark R.oom one.   Max refuses to Chloe’s request to die, asserting that Chloe needs therapy to see that her life has value. After returning the timeline to its original state, Max resolves to stay by Chloe’s side until Rachel’s return. two.   Max frees the bluejay from the confines of the M.adsen family home. At the hospital, Max makes plans to go on a tea shop tour with Kate after she is discharged. three.   After snooping around Nathan’s room, Max and Chloe are confronted by the Prescott in question, and Max fears she may have to rewind...until Warren steps in. Feeling nauseated at the thought of more violence, Max stops Warren before the beatdown turns serious. four.   Having come to the meeting with Frank unarmed (albeit without the money) the girls leave the beach having peacefully gained Frank’s trust and his list of clients. five.   The discovery of the D.ark R.oom and Rachel’s body sends Max spiraling into a severe depression. Convinced that her powers mean little in the face of so much corruption and violence, Max prepares to get revenge on Nathan in the present. six.   At the party, Max saves Alyssa (for an exhausting fourth time) and warns Victoria to stay away from Nathan. Episode 5 - Polarized five.   Awakening in the Prescott’s bunker, Max discovers that Victoria had heeded her warning---and it led her directly to the D.ark R.oom. This revelation coupled with Victoria’s breakdown and Nathan’s death leads Max to seriously question why she was given powers at all. four.   Fun and wholesome things happen that aren’t upsetting. Victoria’s sobs echo in Max’s head. Puppies and kittens. Jefferson threatens to hurt Kate as many times as he needs to break her spirit. It’s fine! Max’s nightmares will have nightmares. This is fine! It’s fine! three.   Weary of the violence, Max chooses not to tell David about Chloe’s death, leading to Jefferson being captured alive (for the moment). two.   In Max’s initial rush to get to the diner, she saves everyone she encounters, including Alyssa for the final time. one.   Upon exiting the nightmare, Max is confronted with one final choice: sacrifice her hometown, or sacrifice Chloe. Max, predictably, takes a third option. Epilogue - The Golden Hour      On a rain-soaked clifftop overlooking the destruction of everything Max and Chloe hold dear, Max realizes that Warren was incorrect: the storm was about the life she hadn’t saved, the injustice that had started this entire chain of events---Rachel’s death. Max’s epiphany leads her to use her focus power on a certain photograph to go back to the Prescott barnyard. Upon discovering Jefferson’s portfolio of Rachel, Max slips the binder into her bag before running after Chloe to find Rachel’s body. Following a screaming match and a much-needed cry session, Chloe agrees to head back to the M.adsen household instead of rushing over to the V.ortex C.lub. Max gathers as much evidence as she can---including Frank’s list of clients---before using her focus power on a photo taken the summer before she moved away to S.eattle. Leaving William to his fate, Max befriends Victoria years before attending Blackwell, sticking by her side as they claw their way to the top of the “it crowd”. But being popular isn’t easy; Max is forced to mask her neurodivergence hard, navigating the capricious moods of her peers, and walking the thin line between try-hard and just ambitious enough.      There are casualties in every timeline, and this one is no exception. You say about Max ("being a petty sore loser" ) and Nino ("in horrificator" ) not owning up their fault. I don't fully understand you here, please could you explain that to me? Chat has called out Nino that he needs to come back to reality after treating and dealing with the threatening situation in a delusional, exciting kind of way.

Horrificator brings up a flaw in Nino that I don’t really see acknowledged, that he is very ambitious, to a point that he can have little regards for others. 

While Chat does call out on Nino recording the akuma attack, there’s little good that does since Nino does still record the attack, record him and his classmates being in danger and still uses that as his film. He loses and gets a pat on the back, nothing on him making use of a dangerous situation for his own personal gain. 

And then, there’s the fact that he’s the biggest cause of Horrificator. Chloe is the final straw and that gets focus because of it, but it was Nino who was putting the most pressure on Mylene, getting short with her and not willing to work with her and help get past her issue. When he snaps at Mylene for messing up again,  he is directing blame onto her, and that has everyone’s attention on her, some classmates you can see are giving her unimpressed looks, which is adding more pressure to her and her failure and just making her feel worse. 

Does Nino ever apologize for the pressure he put on Mylene, who was clearly scared and struggling? Nope, he never does. If anything, he was very eager to see her replaced and he didn’t care who the lead actress was, be it Chloe or Marinette. All he had in mind was meeting his goal. 

Another detail to add to Nino’s ambition, is him changing the script Alya wrote. While it is his right as the director to do so, that was something he should’ve discussed with Alya before he did it. 

Nino is ambitious and can be disregarding of others. That’s a flaw that isn’t acknowledged nor does he really face up to it. 

And this can tie into Gamer with Marinette’s behavior. When Marinette is ambitious enough to see an opportunity to spend time with her crush, what happens? She is scolded by Tikki and Alya for her approach, Tikki thinking there could be another way and potentially because that could hurt Max’s feelings, and Alya because Marinette isn’t going in to represent the school.

Both Marinette and Nino disregard their classmates’ personal feelings, Marinette gets faulted for it, both in the show and by fans, but Nino doesn’t. 

Now for Max, while many blame Marinette for causing Max, I feel it’s Max who really causes himself. Max’s fault is pride and he never grows past it in the episode. 

A lot of people overlook the detail that Max himself was very ambitious in Gamer too, not just Marinette; and he’s also very proud. He didn’t enter to represent the school or to have fun, he entered to prove that he’s the best gamer in Paris, which he confirms when akumatized, to show Paris who’s the greatest gamer. 

Watching Max’s behavior in Gamer, that episode is likely the very first time he’s lost a game. When he loses to Adrien, he needs to take a minute to calm down before he can congratulate Adrien. With Marinette, who he has assumed doesn’t know how to play and if you watch his expression wasn’t impressed at all that she wanted to play; he doesn’t take losing to her well at all, he’s actually very bitter about it. At most he just offered her a sad congratulations and left to tend to his ego, which quickly turns into an angry rant. 

Max’s dialogue:

“This is a travesty, an unequivocal travesty. I should be the one going to that tournament. I worked hard for it. It’s inconceivable.”

He declares that her win a falsity. That it’s absolutely incorrect and there is no doubt about that. 

These are very proud words and not a good display of good sportsmanship when facing a loss. It was a really poor way for the episode to show how to cope with losing. In a competition, there’s always a chance to come across someone better than you, there’s always a chance of losing. Marinette won fair and square, which Max had acknowledged when congratulating her, then next scene says that it’s wrong. By his behavior, and Marinette’s own at the end of the ep, it’s almost set up like she did cheat and had cheated his win away from him. Only she didn’t. She won fair and square, she was a better player than Max, which is something he doesn’t want to accept.  

And by the end of the episode, you see that he’s very angry with Marinette, being very childish and a very sore loser. He has his back to Marinette, his arms crossed, he’s glaring at her from over his shoulder. He’s only consoled and forgiving her when she gives back the chance to play.

That’s not a good example of being a good sportsman to me. That’s him being handed what he wants instead of growing up, accepting his loss, and truly congratulating Marinette for her win. That’s Max’s faults, that’s how he’s a petty sore loser. He was upset about his loss and was only able to move forward when he was able to get what he wanted in the end. 

This is why I fault Nino and Max, and is frustrated that they don’t grow and face up to what they’ve done. 

Nino disregarded his classmates for his own gain. 

Max was a poor sportsman that got what he wanted in the end.

Or, he’s actually turning at least nineteen but the author didn’t want to have that big of an age gap and said to herself “math, whom?”

Personally? I don't think Marinette had many close friends, if at all, before the miraculous were introduced. That is to say, I don't think she was isolated or that she didn't get along with her classmates (aside from Chloe and Sabrina, obviously, who we will get to), but she just didn't belong to any one group. She was friends with everyone, and no one at the same time. As I've said in a previous post before, I think it's fair to say that while the Marinette we know is pretty confident and not afraid to back down, she's also still a teenage girl who was/is plenty insecure. We all saw her in the origins episode, which is very important to both Marinette and Adrien's characters especially when we compare them to how they are now. Marinette was so convinced she would be a terrible superhero, looked down on herself, and pointed out her clumsiness again and again. When she got to class, she intended to sit in her usual seat, where no one was waiting despite everyone - or nearly everyone - already settled in. That usually means she doesn't know anyone well enough to sit by them, and that I know from experience. Then in comes Chloe, who Marinette has already complained about to her mother, and kicks her out. And Marinette argues a bit before she looks resigned - until Alya steps in, of course. This leaves us with the implication that Marinette is either used to being harassed by Chloe (which I think everyone reading this lines) or she just doesn't see the point in defending herself more. That doesn't mean she has a fight in her; we see her not-so-resigned when she sees Adrien and assumes he's sticking gum on her seat. She had plenty fire, but she's so used to being separated and singled out by Chloe that she just didn't have much fight in her (although we can also say Alya defending her the day before gave her a little boost of confidence). Even when she first meets Chat Noir, she's a total mess in the beginning, doubting herself again and calling herself a Mega-Klutz (or something along the lines). But her confidence grows when she realizes she needs to step in, that people are counting on her. And that sticks with her as Marinette, which is why she proudly stands up to Chloe the next day. Throughout the season, we see Marinette bonding with all her classmates, being the confident ray of sunshine we know her as. But I sincerely think that's a recent development, her reaching out more and building stronger friendships. If she had been that close with them or as confident and sassy before being Ladybug, like I know some people believe, she would have been voted class president before. Is that a leap? Maybe, maybe not. Think about it; you can generally tell when a classmate you've known for a few years (and the kids have known each other for a few years, as we see from their class photos) is good material to be your class representative and such. You get a good feel of their character even in the few weeks you're in a class with them. Marinette wasn't like that before. Being Ladybug helped her grow; gave her the confidence she needed to reach out, defend herself, and become a better friend to people (not to say she was a bad friend). But that part of her - the one who calls herself a Mega-Klutz - is still in her. It's been, what, a year or less since gaining her miraculous? That is a core part of who she is; it doesn't go away. She's still scared of people finding out Ladybug is really Mega-Klutz, and being disappointed. That's why it's so popular in reveal fics, because it makes sense, as tiresome as it can be for some readers. So, yes; Marinette is a wonderful, confident character full of burning fire and sunshine.
