Jetlagged — Campbell Bain x Reader
(Inspired by Andy and Apirl's situation after Andy comes back from London—when Chris Pratt left Parks and Rec to film Guardians of the Galaxy—and Andy is severely jetlagged.)
Summary: Campbell has been away for a DJ competition and when he gets back he's always falling asleep which cuts the couple's time together since they don't live together.
Warning: Joke about going off of meds for sake of sex drive; Mentions of Sexual Jokes, Implied Short Reader, Implied Non-Scottish Reader
(Post-Asylum; May be connected to "Sweet Jane" or read alone; If you decided to include this in Sweet Jane, this takes place between the ending of the series and the epilogue written by me.)
1995 (Eight months since the events of Takin' Over the Asylum)
"Baaaaabe." Campbell sang as a tired Y/N walked out of her room. "I am so tired, but I didn't want to sleep until you got up, babe!"
Y/N sleepily walked to him, cupping his cheeks and kissing him on the forehead before he raised himself to his knees, pulling her in and kissing her on the lips.
He had been traveling due to his job as a disk jockey for three weeks now and was quite jetlagged.
Last night, Y/N had fallen asleep on his shoulder in the middle of Nightmare on Elm Street, a ritual to watch a horror movie with a good soundtrack or score. A horror movie so Campbell can pretend to be the brave one and comfort Y/N, which was often not the case but he insisted that it was.
Campbell had looked down at her in disbelief, "Who falls asleep during Nightmare on Elm Street!?" He exclaimed as the first victim was killed... in their sleep!
Y/N had shifted and moaned softly into his neck. He had smiled down at her lovingly, stroking her hair briefly, wrapping his arms around her and he picked her up and carried her to bed.
He didn't want to wake her up so he stayed out in the living room, watching movies for the scores and soundtracks.
"Hey, how was your night-day?" She yawned, going to make some hot chocolate for them both and to bring Campbell his morning pills.
"Fine. Been rewatching my favorite scores of your creepy horror movies. Psycho's a good film but a bad representation of mental health."
"Yeah, I know, babe. So is Fatal Attraction, Psycho, The Shining—though granted it's the hotel's influence that causes it but the movie makes it seem like mental health rather the supernatural like in the book, Halloween, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and so on."
"You're weird. I love you." He grinned.
"Oh shut up." She rolled her eyes.
"How was your three weeks without your Campbell?" He teased with an overconfident flirty grin on his face but his sleepiness was written all over his face. "Unbearable? Void of my amazing sense of humor? Unsatisfactory?" He raised his eyebrows suggestively.
"Quiet. Calm." She retorted blankly, despite having been in a relationship with him for ten months, they hadn't had sex yet. Campbell often made flirtatious suggestions but he was mostly kidding, on their six month anniversary (April fourth), he could tell that something was up but she became quite quiet when she was broody, so he sat her down before they went out for their dinner and asked her what was wrong and she confessed she was worried that he wasn't satisfied in the relationship because he desperately wanted to lose his virginity and that he was turning twenty that month on the sixteenth and Y/n was still hesitant due to her ex's actions upon her and Campbell swore he wouldn't actively pressure her or cheat on her and he hadn't.
"So, boring." Campbell said, starting to drift off.
"No, Cam. You need to take your pills before you mess up your pill schedule." Y/N said, hurrying to him with his pills.
"But it's so much better if I don't." He smirked, turning so he flopped on the couch and pulled Y/N on top of him, resting his hands on her thighs, he sat up, "Without them, my drive's higher."
"Campbell." Y/N said in a scolding voice.
"Come on, baby." He murmured, kissing Y/N's neck.
Y/N pushed Campbell on his back, still straddling him as she gave him a fierce and stern look, "Campbell David Bain! You need those pills to manage your disorder. I love you and your disorder, I love you with all your flaws and quirks, I love you will all your light and all your darkness, but these," She shook the pill bottle in his face, "keep you from having manic episodes! The radio can only do so much! This is medicine! And if I find out, you stop taking them for a higher libido, I will tie you to a chair, force them into your mouth and pour water on your face until you swallow it!"
Campbell swallowed, taking stuttering short breathes, "Y/N, I totally hear you but I'm not going to lie, what you're doing right now and what you're saying," He gestured to where she was straddling him, "is really turning me on."
"Do you understand me!?" She said, loudly.
"Yes! I do. I'm sorry. Babe, you either need to stop pinning me down like this or I'm going to explode. I'm a twenty-year-old virgin for God sake." He whined out.
She sighed and sat up and he followed. He cupped her face and kissed her gently on the lips. He held out his hand and she handed him the pills. He took the recommended dosage and stuck his tongue out at the taste. Y/n giggled and pecked his lips before going to get their hot chocolate now that the milk on the stove was hot.
She brought it back and handed him his in his Radio Scotland mug. He didn't drink it yet, he just watched her sit next to him.
Then he leaned over, putting his hand to the cheek away from him to turn her head towards him and kissed her quickly but passionately on the lips. "I love you too." He said, earnestly, "With all your darkness and your damage. For all your trauma. For all that happened to you and I'm sorry you had to do it alone. As for all that will happen to you, I will be there for you every step of the way. Forever."
She leaned back and blinked at him. "Forever?"
He smiled and nodded, "Forever or as long as you'll have me."
"You need to get on my schedule for that to happen."
"Mmm-hmm." He groaned.
"I wish I could spend it all with you to help you stay up..." She said, she trailed off as she realized what she was insinuating. "But you can't. You have to go to your flat eventually."
"What if I don't?" He said. "What if we spent the day, moving my stuff here. So I could live here with you... you know your cousin moved out a few months ago... still no pressure to have sex. Just cuddling and when or if you're ready, I'll be here, totally, utterly, in love with you."
"You really think you can stand being around me all day?"
"I'm pretty sure I should be the one answering that question. I'm the more... er, extroverted of us two."
"I could never tire of you."
"You'll be the first, then. I annoyed my parents so much they wanted me to move all the way to Perth." He joked.
"I annoyed my parents so much they sent me to an asylum no where near where they live all because I wouldn't talk." She countered.
"Mmm. Guess, we're both just annoying." He shrugged and kissed her.
"Not to me you're not." She said against his lips.
He pulled back, "I, uh, I have like twenty-five minutes before the medicine fully kicks in. Do you want to go to my place and start packing first or do you just want to snog on this couch?"
She kissed him, pushing him slightly so they both fell on the couch, kissing, passionately.
--
They called Francine, Rosalie, and Eddie and with their help they packed up Campbell's flat while Campbell kept getting distracted and goofing off with Y/n, kissing her, hugging her, and joking around with her, distracting her from packing.
"Campbell! If you don't start taking this seriously, you won't be able to move out today!" Eddie scolded him for the fifth time in an hour.
Campbell dropped his head against Y/n's shoulder as he had his arms wrapped around her waist, behind her and whined.
Ultimately, it was Rosalie who did most of packing and Eddie and Rosalie's husband, Jim carried in the boxes while Campbell carried the smaller boxes due to him being a, as Y/n called him, "matchstick man" because he was so skinny though he declared he was the strongest man of all time, teasingly before flopping back in a chair and pulling Y/n on his lap.
"You can't get rid of me now, babe." He teased as she moved her legs over his lap and the chair arm, their foreheads touching.
"Good." She said, she stroked his floppy bangs so she could look him in his brown eyes. "And you're stuck with me now."
"Good." He grinned.
When Francine, Rosalie, Jim, and Eddie found them, Y/n had fallen asleep with Campbell in a sleepy but still awake state. He muttered goodbyes to the others before picking Y/n up again and carrying her back into her room... their room. He laid her down and laid next to her, snuggling up to her again, making her stir slightly and he gave her a peck on the lips which she sleepily reciprocated and he kissed her forehead and then her nose before pulling her closer and falling asleep.

i’m currently rewatching parks and rec and i feel like i have to sing its praises because man… it’s genuinely one of the best shows ever made. not just out of sitcoms, but out of all tv.
not only is it funny, but the world building is so good. that’s one of mike schur’s strongest skills. like, the citizens of pawnee and recurring characters like perf hapley, shauna malwae tweep, joan callamezzo, etc. make pawnee feel lived in. after a while of watching parks, you get attached to pawnee because of that.
something else that helps the world building is that the show’s timeline is very clear and past events get brought up because they have an effect on a character’s life. most sitcoms only bring up major events, but parks will bring up small events again later. for example, leslie pulled down her pants on tv to prove to joan callamezzo that she wasn’t sleeping with councilman dexhart, and then during the telethon she pulled her pants down again and joan says she just loves flashing her ass on tv. that seems like such a small thing, but sitcoms often overlook details like this, sometimes even acting like things didn’t happen. parks and rec frequently brings up things that happened before frequently, and it does a lot to help you connect to these characters and make their lives seem real.
jumping from that point, the characters also make this show. not just who they are, but how real they feel. there’s something about the way mike schur’s shows handle characters (specifically parks and rec and the good place) that’s so unique. he writes them as if they were real. instead of playing god with his characters and writing them however he wants, he lets their actions and the way the actors play them change how he writes the character. the most important example of this in parks and rec is in the season 2 finale, when ben smiled at leslie near the end of the episode. ben (and chris) weren’t supposed to stay on the show; but when adam scott looked at amy poehler like that mike schur said that was the moment he knew ben had to stay and that ben and leslie would get together and stay together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he didn’t plan that ahead of time. it wasn’t in his plan for the show. it just happened. that’s the type of writing that makes this show feel so real.
there’s so much more i adore about this show and i could go on and on about it forever. but i’ll stop here for now. there isn’t and will never be another show like you, parks and recreation.

What are your tastes in media? (Music/TV/Film/Books)
Sorry for the late reply!
When it comes to TV/Film/Books (…any storytelling type of media in general) I really like a combination of horror/thriller and comedy. Especially dry humor, but not necessarily. I love a lot of raunchy and stupid stuff too. My favourite shows are probably South Park (rewatched this one 1000 times) and Parks and Rec (we don’t watch a lot of live-action (???) series though, and it’s been a while since we watched this one). Of course, these two aren’t really horrors/thrillers lol, but a good example of a thriller show that I love would be Hannibal. This one we also rewatched 100000 times, it’s honestly perfect: the story, the aesthetics, the gore, and of course of course the relationship between Hannibal and Will.
I wanted to say that I don’t really love stories that focus on romance, but then again, one of my favourite movies is Heathers, so I guess based on this + my love for Hannibal one might say that I do love romance, but a very specific type of it lol
In general, I tend to especially enjoy the ones that have a strong visual style and aesthetic, like The Shining, Parasite, Midsommar, Suspiria and stuff. But I don’t only watch horrors; Katsu (who is also a person that introduced me to horror in the first place) recommends me a lot of very good films.
I don’t read books very often (oof), but out of everything I’ve read over the past couple of years, the things that I liked the most were “Misery” (by King) and Lord of the Flies.
When it comes to music, I guess I don’t even listen to it very often either. I love soundtracks, I love anime music and vocaloid music (mostly old tracks that I’ve been listening to for years), sometimes I listen to stuff from musicals. One of my favourite bands, Sound Horizon, pretty much tells stories with their music, and I really love them for both this and their sound in general. Well, and of course things that Katsu and my friends send to me.
Hmm… I guess I love strong female vocals. I still love Evanescence very much + love Ado’s songs a lot.
I won’t talk much about my favourite anime and manga (I actually have written posts about it before; they are a bit old though), but I’ll say that a lot of things that we love is either seinen or some kind of BL-ish comedy lol
To help myself with this reply, I opened both MAL (for anime and manga, duh) and Letterboxd accounts, although my ratings there are a little bit over the place, so I couldn’t trust them...
There are moments when we watch or read something that is super out of our comport zone, and it’s usually a pretty interesting and refreshing experience, so even though all of my answers were pretty much “YES DARK STUFF TEEHEEHEE”, I’m not opposed to other stuff. I guess the most ultimate important thing that could make me love any type of media (as long as I have time to dive into it) would be the unapologetic self-indulgence that the author has for their work. Somehow it’s very easy to sense when you watch or read something. I really love experiencing media and just know that the author is having fun. I love passion projects where you can clearly see it is one for the author.
But this sounds a bit cheesy, I know lol

Is anyone else tired of this heat wave?! It’s been HOT here, as I’m sure it’s been most everywhere else, too. That means lots of early morning outings and park trips to avoid being out during the hottest part of the day and lots of kiddy pool afternoons at home. Homemade apple juice popsicles have also been a big hit.
Pep has developed a deep love for trains over the past month or two and he constantly pumps his tiny arm up and down going “mmm mmm!” to signal “choo choo!” to us.. as in, please put on YouTube videos of trains, my people. So we’ve been at least watching less cocomelon, to my great relief. When we take him to the local parks, pep often gets to see the trains in real life and he gets such pure joy out of it. So — we decided one day last week to take him on his first train ride! A quick 15 minute trip to a nearby town and back, and he loved it so much. It was a juggling act getting out of the house with both boys but we did well! When this heat breaks, we need to get out as a family more often.
Pip is doing great and has actually fallen into a pretty predictable sleeping schedule (!) which still seems too good to be true to me sometimes because we struggled so much for so long with pep’s sleep. He usually has his last big meal (which I’ve dubbed ‘ultrafeast’, channeling our best Kevin Malone vibes) around 730-8pm and it’s lights out by 830. He then sleeps till about 1am when he wakes up to eat. He goes back down till about 5, when he wakes again, and he may or may not go back down again after that. I’m still the one getting up with him 100% at night which means I’m tired, but it’s getting better. Slowly.
Nursing is going pretty well all things considered and I’m now happily supplementing a few bottles of formula a day. It’s what works for us. My biggest complaint: I cannot get this baby to stay awake while nursing. He gets so cozy and passes out so quickly. A friend told me oh, just rub his head and blow in his face! Oh, I am. I am.
How am I doing? Not too bad, really. I worked out for the first time in a long time the other day! Did a 30 minute fitness marshall workout. I really need to get serious about weight loss again. I hoped pep would be super into dancing around the living room with me but his interest faded after a minute or two and then he just got annoyed I wasn’t paying attention to him. Typical. 😂 I have my postpartum doctor appointment this coming week so fingers crossed I’m all good to go. I think I’m healing alright, but definitely not totally healed just yet.
I keep wondering whether therapy is really benefitting me. I’m just not sure. Some days I feel better afterward, but I don’t seem to get a ton of feedback from my therapist — it’s kinda just one way. Who knows. I feel like I should be getting more from her. Like, analyze me, woman! Fix me! Tell me how to Be Better!
On that note, I just started reading “How to be Perfect - The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question” by Mike Schur (of The Office, Parks and Rec, The Good Place) and it is FANTASTIC. Highly recommend if you’re looking to learn about ethics in a funny, witty, relatable kinda way.
As far as watching goes, I started rewatching Parenthood (big heart eyes) and B and I are currently halfway through season 4 of Stranger Things. Shit, does that get dark. Right?? Not sure how much I love it if I’m being honest. Obviously I’m also watching Bachelorette. How do we feel about two bachelorettes this season? Jury is out on that one, but I love the mindless trashy show anyway.
That’s all for now; it’s 1am and I’ve got a baby who is hopefully about to let me go back to bed. Love to you, friends!

What you think of Pam and Jim from The Office?
I go through Phases with these two.
Which has to do very much with the material as much as the actors and the actual plot as well as their relationship.
The first time I watched the show, I liked them. Just liked them. They're two regular people, plain and normal and they're best friends and they fall in love. Cool.
I would say I ship them (and I do have a quote book like I do for Friends, Bones, Studio 60, and Go On, where I record my favourite funny lines, ship lines, and friendship moments) but I don't know if I do.
They're canon, so I'm in. But there's so much that they do, both in and outside of their relationships that I just can't... I just can't. There's a pattern of miscommunication and mistreatment towards each other and their coworkers that I just can't unsee sometimes. Yes, they have sweet moments, but I don't necessarily think that unravels the negative aspects of their relationship.
But The Office, in general, isn't a rewatchable show, in my opinion. It is about the characters but it's more about the antics, and if you're focusing on the action rather than the emotion, in any text, it's far more difficult to be rewatchable and equally as enjoyable the second, fourth, fifteenth time around. The Office is good the first time and then its good in bites or in the background. There are standout moments but there's a lot of crazy things that go on that I really just can't sit and consume unproblematically. So, maybe some of my irritation has to do with that.
I think, and this is true of both Michael Schur's Brooklyn 99 and The Office (I can't watch Parks and Rec and The Good Place was so good in theory but flopped at the end of season one for me, which was annoying because I love Ted Danson). Both B99 and The Office are the same in terms of the "main" couple's plot. Like propper milestone by milestone, they match if you combine The Office seasons one and two. (End of season = man admits feelings, Next season = woman has feelings, man has moved on. Secretly get together and begin dating, tell everyone almost immediately). Which, sure, you've found your formula that works but reads as lazy to me.
The partnering is stereotypical and unoriginal which would honestly be fine. (And don't get me started on how Jim/Pam and Jake/Amy are genuinely written as Mondler rip-offs). But there is a lack of cohesive characterisation once they settle into living together, maybe when they marry. Again, the format of the show doesn't give you their home life, so there can't be too much of that, but do still get scraps of character amidst all the craziness. It gets so close to being a character driven sitcom and then it remembers there's a punchline somewhere and abandons the character to get back to the joke. But it's lacking in my opinion.
I'm not sure if this even answers your question of if I like Jim and Pam. I do, mostly. They definitely deserve each other most of the time and they seem to make each other happy on the whole, they complement each other but where written that way and once they get together they sort of stagnate until the story focuses on them again without really growing in the background. And I'm not even sure if I like them as people. Every so often, I'm like, yeah, Pam is me and Jim's the everyman, but then I sit and pay attention and there's so much of the things that go on in this workplace are just not on.
There's just so much else going on in this story-world, whether it's the characters who get done dirty by the writing, or that the show itself fizzles most of the time and the spark definitely disappears when Steve leaves (not that I even like Michael or Steve Carrell all that much), that there isn't much room for Jim and Pam anyway, they're sort of fighting for screen time once they're together, like once the audience has buckled in for this relationship, the ride has started but we're blindfolded and don't really get to see it unfold. Save for some sweet domestic moments.
So yes. But also, no. They're a bit like Ross and Rachel, in that regard, even though their story is Mondler's. The early seasons they're front and centre and its enjoyable because we get the drama and the yearning. But once they're together and married they're basically non-events. But whether that's the story not making room for them, or me not liking them as people once they get to a certain point, I'm not sure.

do you have any hcs for the characters in your college au’s interests in the sense of tv/movies/music? i’d love to hear them
YES!!!
JJ
she doesn’t have that much free time to really focus on things that aren’t soccer and school but she does have some favourites
as for music it’s stuff that can get her hyped up for running. she loves blasting music when she works out
“what? I rock.” is probably my favourite quote so I think she definitely listens to some classic rock that her parents played when she was a kid. she likes pop, anything with high energy. she was also not afraid to admit that she likes taylor swift
she cried the first time she heard hozier’s take me to church. she did not know why
as a kid JJ read every single book about horses. you know the ones about the young girl taming the wild horse and saving the barn? that story over and over again. she had the plot of black beauty memorized. its canon that jj was a horse girl and im certain she was that type of horse girl
Ros loved movies and JJ has fond memories of movie nights with her whole family. when her parents start to fight, and Ros retreats into herself, they stop. JJ claims she doesn’t have time to watch movies after that, she gets antsy as she watches them, feeling as though she should be doing something productive. she did see Twilight in the theatres with her soccer team on opening night but thats different
when she needs to escape, she watches comedies anything that she can do work while watching. she’ll work on her homework at the same time and she’ll just watch anything that requires minimal focus like parks and rec or the good place. she likes to keep it light and avoid material that could be triggering for her.
she gets stuck rewatching her comfort shows and movies over an over bc of the anxiety
she also does develop an interest in cheesy old horror movies with a bunch of jump scares because she likes the adrenaline rush, she laughs at Emily when she hides under the blankets when JJ puts them on
JJ also obviously watches sports when she can. she was always the tomboy of the family and she and her dad would watch it together. she and derek watch the game on the tv in their residences common room
Emily
as our fav big tiddy goth gf, we know Emily had a huge emo phase. I think it happened after she left Rome, and it was all encompassing. her music was angry, loud and she played it on her speaker system until her mom threw it out, then she resigned to play it in her headphones loud enough to give her tinnitus
once she shifted from her goth phase into being definitively alt, she didn’t let go of all of those songs, but shifted into listening to some music with queer undertones. we’re talking passion pit, mother mother, and of course: girl in red. probably some other like niche artists in multiple other languages as well. she loved italian music when she was there and WILL sing along to cheesy french pop music as well
we know emily is a big reader, and i think she has definitely trudged through all the classics like jules verne and jane austin before trying out some more contemporary works. unfortunately, since she moved around so often, she spent a lot of time at the library. her mom said that she wasnt allowed too have more than one box to pack her books in, so Emily has weaned her collection own to the essentials that she’s read over and over
she is a sucker for tv adaptations of the books shes read. she thinks it works better than 2 hour films because she likes how faithful they can be to the source material
most importantly: she is a nerd. she LOVES the x files and buffy the vampire slayer and firefly, all the 90s tv that she watched as re-runs growing up. sci-fi, dystopian, speculative fiction even some fantasy she eats it all up
she also is a sucker for documentaries that she watches to clear her mind or go to sleep. it’s one of the things that got her into studying criminology! she loved documentaries on murder investigations

Astaire & Rogers Rewatch Part 4: Top Hat
• So we’ve reached Top Hat, which is generally everyone’s favorite including @elloette. Even many film historians say it’s the best Astaire/Rogers film. And it’s definitely one of the best but not the best imo. It does however have some of my favorite dances and songs and probably the most famous dance Astaire and Rogers ever created.
• Top Hat is kind of like a more sophisticated version of Gay Divorcee. It also has probably the best example of the Big White Set that was ubiquitous to these films. If I’m not mistaken they dyed the water black to make the set stand out more *goes to check IMDB* yep!
• Our characters/actors: Jerry Travers (Fred Astaire), Dale Tremont (Ginger Rogers), Horace Hardwick (Edward Everett Horton), Madge Hardwick (Helen Broderick), Alberto Beddini (Erik Rhodes)
• I never realized it before but Horace and his valet are like a bickering old couple. In many ways, they make far more sense as a pair than Horace and Madge.
• I’m back again to gush about Astaire’s singing. He slides effortlessly into “No Strings (I’m Fancy Free)” straight from the dialogue, and it sounds perfectly natural. Like the way hb and I integrate Parks and Rec quotes into everyday dialogue, but obviously Astaire is a bit fancier.
• His line about feeling like a sailor at sea is fitting since, in his next film, he will indeed be a sailor.
• This is a favorite solo routine for sure. He’s just so joyful and in the groove. I especially like when he taps out the beat on the side table and startles Horace with short burst of taps.
Tumblr media
• Horace thinks he’s such hot shit that some random young woman has come to see him at his hotel late at night.
• Astaire didn’t think he was handsome and didn’t enjoy watching himself on screen, hence the grimace when he looks in the mirror, which is played for a laugh. But that opinion runs contrary to Astaire’s place as one of the leading men of Hollywood and as one part of some of the most romantic moments in film history, primarily with Rogers. It lends credence to Katharine Hepburn’s famous saying that Astaire gave Rogers “class,” and she gave him “sex” (metaphorically). He’s arguably never sexier than when dancing with Ginger Rogers.
• When Dale comes upstairs to tell him to shut up, she gives zero effs. Doesn’t care that he’s trying to be charming or funny, or that he’s sorry for waking her, or that he’s flirting with her, doesn’t care about him at all in any way. Just shut up so I can sleep, is her message.
• But then. She is charmed by his soft shoe dance on a sandy floor to lull her to sleep.
• Spotted: young Lucille Ball as the florist’s assistant. We’ll see her in the next movie too where she’ll have her first ever credited roll.
• Astaire’s face when he asks, “Don’t I even get any thanks?” is so heartfelt and open. It always makes me awwwwwwww.
• Another favorite line of dialogue from these films:
Jerry, holding an umbrella in a downpour: “May I rescue you?”
Dale, unimpressed: “No, thank you. I prefer being in distress.”
• “Isn’t it a Lovely Day?” is a flirtatious song and they act it that way but the true flirting comes in the dance, which is about partnership and equality. They imitate one another throughout the scene, starting even while Astaire is singing. Rogers puts a hand on her chest and he then does the same. They’re dressed alike as well, thanks to her riding outfit, and that furthers the theme by making her more masculine to match him but it’s also advantageous for some of the moves they’ll perform, such as when she lifts him.
• Jerry thinks he’s in control. He’s surprised, but pleased, to find Dale has gotten up and followed him as he begins to dance. He thinks he’s won her over. Then she mocks him a bit by sticking her hands in her pockets like he’s done and surprises him even more by busting out her own little extra tap. She’s telling him she’s not there just to follow his lead and any relationship between them will only work if they’re equals.
• They’re definitely testing each other in this dance, finding out if they are drift compatible. Trying this step and that to see if the other can keep up. She keeps glancing at him in a self-satisfied way. He crosses his arms to see if she’ll do the same. They circle the space mirroring each other with every movement, and while they’re in sync, it’s still like one is leading and the other is following. Until they clap in unison, skip forward, and land at the exact same time. They spin around neatly and he glances over, smiling in pleasure, and so is she.
• The first time they touch is over a minute and a half in and it’s only to lend a hand so each can twirl in turn. They glide forward and back in a wide loop as the music builds and now they’re smiling in earnest and it’s not just the characters; it’s Astaire and Rogers. He mouths something to her, maybe more than once, and they’re both clearly enjoying themselves.
Tumblr media
• It’s only in the last 30 seconds or so that they actually touch for real, and it’s because she has crooked her arm in invitation. He spins them around the bandstand together and although it’s a fairly standard move Astaire uses a lot, because they’re both in trousers, you can see just how close they are to one another, knees and hips pressed together.
• And now they combine both elements of the dance: imitation and partnership. They move as reflections of one another and take turns lifting each other. During this portion is where you once again can see the acting stop and the actors just being themselves. As they near the end of the dance, Astaire and Rogers both grin in delight and he maybe looks especially proud of her. This was a technical dance with a lot of movement and she nails it. While her gowns often add to their duets, it’s routines like this, where she’s in trousers, that you can see her technical skill really shine.
Tumblr media
• One of the many ways Rogers contributed to the dancing partnership was in being their “button finder,” which means she was good at figuring out how to end a scene or dance. The best example is at the end of this dance, where she came up with the idea for them to finish by having Jerry and Dale simply shake hands.
• Don’t miss the sex joke in the middle of Horace and Jerry’s argument:
Horace, who is concerned about scandal ahead of Jerry’s show: “Why, I’d rather have had it (getting slapped) happen to me than to you.”
Jerry, not missing a beat: “Oh, of course, if you enjoy that sort of thing.”
Horace: “I do, immensely… (realizing what he’s just said) Now don’t be absurd!”
• Dale’s line, “I hate men. I hate you. I hate all men!” is a mood.
• Beddini’s response, “I am no man. I am Beddini!” is how all men think of themselves.
• Interesting that all we’ve seen Dale and Jerry do is dance a very fun, flirtatious, but not necessarily romantic duet (ok, fine it was in a bandstand while it was raining which is pretty romantic but you get it), and yet she says, “How could he have made love to me when he was married all the time?” 🤔🤔🤔
Further 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Horace: “You sure you didn’t forget yourself in the park?
Jerry: “Positive. If I ever forgot myself with that girl, I’d remember.”
• Seriously, there are some vibes between Horace and his valet. *gaydar pings very quietly out of earshot of the censors*
• I like Astaire’s little warm-up in his dressing room. Seems like the kind of thing he probably did irl.
• One of my absolute favorites moments is when Jerry instructs Horace to charter a plane so they can fly down to meet Dale. Horace asks, “What kind of plane?” And Jerry, already about to miss his stage cue, leans back into the doorway quickly to say, “One with wiiiings!”
• The physical “invitation” Jerry uses when singing the appropriate line in “Top Hat, White Tie and Tails” is actually Madge’s telegram about Dale. He took it on stage with him after snatching it from Horace’s hands.
• There are conflicting stories about how many canes Astaire broke while filming this sequence and which take was used. One account says he broke 12 canes in frustration while failing to get the number absolutely right and the 13th (and last cane) was used in the final take, which was then printed. But Astaire recalled that Jimmy Cagney, who was visiting the set at the time, advised him that he’d nailed it on the second take. Astaire wanted to try a couple more but the next day, agreed that Cagney was right and the second take was used.
• Shooting down his rivals with a cane and using taps for bullets was based on a gimmick Astaire had used years before in a terrible Broadway show. Here it became one of his most iconic creations. I especially like when he fires off a shot at the Horace’s stuffy club members in the audience.
• How on earth did Dale think that Jerry was married to Madge? In what world are they compatible? Granted, she hasn’t actually met Horace but still.
• While Horace is in the bathtub in his shower cap:
Horace: “Jerry! I don’t think it’s safe for you to see that girl alone.”
Jerry: “Well, I don’t think it would be quite proper for you to receive her that way.”
Tumblr media
• In most Astaire/Rogers movies, he has a lot of bravado and pursues her but she almost always ends up shocking the hell out of him when she turns out to also be ballsy af. In Gay Divorcee, she invited him to her room. In Top Hat, she comes up to see him alone and then kisses him.
Hardly a romantic kiss btw. But we still aren’t to the place where we talk about the lack of kisses in this film series.
• Aaaaaand again, Astaire’s singing is so perfect for this song. He leads straight from conversation into the lyrics. The music has already been playing in the background, and he makes it appear he’s created the lyrics of “Cheek to Cheek” just for her in this moment.
• Rogers does a magnificent job of softening when he starts to sing. Her eyes flick up and down his face, touched that he’s serenading her. And when Astaire drops his tone on the word “seek,” his gaze is heated for a just a moment and her lips quirk a little. Being sung to is awkward but she makes it seem like the most romantic thing.
Tumblr media
• Like in “Night in Day” in Gay Divorcee, this dance is about seduction but its more developed than in the prior film. Because the characters have already danced together, elements of “Isn’t it a Lovely Day?” seep in, such as the short tap routine they do side by side. Instead of getting her to simply give in to him, he is asking her to trust him, to remember the equality and partnership they’d built before. He almost never takes his eyes off her for the entire dance, even watching her out of the corner of his eye when they’re side by side.
• I would say most of this dance falls into the “acting” category but there are a couple Astaire and Rogers moments that peek through. After the first time he leans her back and them brings them together so their faces are close, he smiles privately to her. After their little tap section, he swings her back into his arms and they’re both smiling in delight.
• A few times the only place they’re touching is his hand on her back and there’s something very Victorian hot about that.
• I’ve always liked the moment where she twirls and he waits, hand outstretched, expression openly adoring, until she takes his hand without looking and they’re in sync again.
Tumblr media
• Another callback to “Isn’t it a Lovely Day?”: In that dance, she crooked her arm in invitation to him. Here, she leaves her arm up so he can wrap it around his neck.
• Several times he leans her back, each time dipping her a little further and keeping her there a little longer, but never failing to hold her and bring her up. Each time showing her she can trust him. When they reach the climax, she bends back completely and he holds her for several looooong seconds before very slowly returning her to her feet. Complete surrender and trust from them both. And after that moment, there is no need for anything else to cement their relationship. He can simply bring them cheek to cheek.
• Something that is evident in most of his partnered dances but perhaps most obvious in a duet like this with Rogers is that Astaire was very good about making his partner the central focus. Your eyes instinctively watch Rogers, not him, throughout the performance. But credit must also be given to Rogers herself for commanding the screen so thoroughly not solely because of her elegant dancing and gorgeous gown but because she remembers to keep acting the entire time. We never doubt that Dale is falling in love with Jerry through this dance.
Tumblr media
• Sooo the feather dress. So much to say, some of which you may already know:
The short story is, as soon as they started filming the dance, the feathers on the dress flew everywhere. No one wanted that dress to be used, except Ginger Rogers, and she refused to wear something else.
Director Mark Sandrich, who was a dick to Rogers all the time, wanted her to wear a gown from Gay Divorcee. She told him to GTFO. Then she called her badass mom who came to the set to also tell him to GTFO.
Because they could be little shits, Astaire and Hermes Pan made up lyrics mocking the dress, set to the tune of "Cheek to Cheek.” They went, "Feathers, I hate feathers, And I hate them so that I can hardly speak, And I never find the happiness I seek, With those chicken feathers dancing cheek to cheek."
Rogers was pissed, not in the least because she had designed the dress herself and also they were ostrich feathers tyvm. Tbh it does look pretty magnificent in the final edit of the film… but that was after every single feather had been hand sewn into place. And you can still see some of them float off.
In their next film, Astaire is going to get whacked in the face by the heavy, beaded sleeve of Rogers’ dress so he really had it easy here.
He also knew he’d gone too far in poking fun at her dress and generally being an ass about the entire situation. Astaire apologized to Rogers by giving her a gold feather for her charm bracelet and affectionately calling her “Feathers” in the accompanying note (“Dear Feathers, I love ya! -Fred”). The nickname stuck. Later, he would also give her a beautiful travel watch that was housed in a golden envelope. Engraved on the outside of the envelope in Astaire’s writing? “By Hand/To Feathers/All best love -Fred.”
• The dress is absolutely essential to the dreamy quality of this dance. It makes her look like she’s floating along, caught up in being in love and in his arms. She even seems to come out of a daydream once they’ve finished dancing.
• The plot and dialogue jump through so many hoops to avoid Madge ever once saying, “my husband’s friend, Jerry,” which would clear up everything instantly.
• Interesting that when Dale reminisces sadly about her love for Jerry, whom she doesn’t think she can actually be with, the tune that plays is “Isn’t it a Lovely Day?” and not “Cheek to Cheek.” High romance is lovely but sometimes nothing beats being able to laugh and have fun together.
• Horace and Jerry have been sharing the bridal suite, as it was the only room available when they arrived. But now that Dale has impulsively agreed to marry Beddini, the management asks if Jerry and Horace would be wiling to give up the suite in exchange for a different room.
Jerry: “Well, we’ve hardly settled in it yet… Have we, angel?”
Horace: “No, and all our clothes are...(realizing Jerry is teasing him) Oh, please.”
• Upon finally realizing what’s actually been going on with Dale:
Jerry: “She’s been mistaking me for Horace all this time.”
Madge: “No wonder she thought Horace was fascinating.”
Horace: “Heh, no wonder. (then immediately) I resent that.”
• Perhaps poking fun at the way dances had been filmed until he took charge, Astaire and Rogers’ portion of “The Piccolino” starts with a close up of their feet. But instead of then cutting to a full body shot, the shot widens to show them and the dance continues all in one take.
• This may be a strange place to talk about how right Astaire and Rogers look together but I’m gonna do it anyway. Their heights are very complimentary and they move like extensions of one another. The routine is quick and bouncy, incorporating several styles and switching between them rapidly. Throughout, Astaire and Rogers elevate one another with their individual grace and skill. That element is only going to continue to grow in the next couple of films.
• At one point he whips around to pull her in so they can spin like they did in the bandstand. As she waits for him, Rogers’ face lights up and they go into the move smiling wide. Soon after, Astaire playfully raises his eyebrows to her. At another point, they step forward slowly, eyes on each other, and there’s a glimpse of that private world they sometimes slip into during their dances. The whole time, they’re absolutely flawless.
Tumblr media
• It wouldn’t have made sense to record the taps, etc live like “I’ll Be Hard to Handle” in Roberta but I wonder what might’ve been picked if they had. Aside from when they clap and there’s no sound, Astaire says something to her when they’re dancing in a circle facing each other. She definitely seems to be giggling at several points.
• When the music kicks up and they go into an energetic section, he bows and flourishes his hand to her, once again making her the main focus.
• While filming the final scene of the movie, Sandrich (the director) wanted the duo to do a short ending dance and he told them this on the day of filming. Astaire and Rogers were peeved. Every bit of dancing, no matter how small, was always rehearsed. But Sandrich, who, again, was a dick, insisted. According to Rogers, she privately told Astaire to simply move her about however he wanted and she would follow along.  In all likelihood, they probably did whip up this little dance and rehearse it quickly but you’d never know it wasn’t planned ahead of time.
She obviously had a lot of trust in his ability to lead them both but she also knew he was an excellent social dancer, meaning he didn’t necessarily need a pre-rehearsed routine. And she knew this because they’d gone dancing back in New York when they were dating.
• Here’s a cool behind the scenes picture from The Academy’s archive taken during the final scene.
Tumblr media
• And so we’ve finished Top Hat, another glamorous adventure for Astaire and Rogers. Up is a more working class outing: Follow the Fleet.

List 7 Comfort Films; Tag 7 People
Thanks for tagging me, @mxnsterparty! I honestly don’t watch movies all that often, so I’m going to do TV shows. ^^
1. The Great British Bake-Off -- quite frankly this show could be the entire list. This is my A+ #1 stress-watch and it never fails to make me feel calm.
2. Nadiya’s Time to Eat -- a cooking show hosted by a GBBO winner who is so sweet and sunny and delightful to watch.
3. Parks and Rec -- the way it both makes me laugh and also affectionately makes fun of humanity’s and society’s deeply flawed nature makes me happy and gives me hope.
4. Futurama -- I haven’t watched it in awhile tbh, but I love it for the same reason as Parks and Rec -- very funny and ideologically comes down on the side of people being Flawed But Good.
5. Taskmaster -- a comedy show that’s available on YouTube and very good when you want to laugh!
6. The Good Place -- even though I haven’t found it to have the Comfort Rewatch value of other shows, I definitely found it comforting when watching it the first time!
7. AntsCanada YouTube channel -- this isn’t TV but quite frankly just watching this dude who is very very enthusiastic about his pet ants got me through some rough times in the past couple years.
I’m taking the coward’s way out and saying that if you’d like to do this meme, I’m hereby tagging you, so post it and say I tagged ya. c;

I’m writing a story and a pairing that shows up in the show is like me being salty about certain things of how I met your mother and the ending of that show 😂😂 I was rewatching to see if I remembered certain things correctly (ie robin and teds relationship and the dumb ass ways the friendship and relationship went, and if the mom was as awesome as I remember her. Robin was great, Ted got on my nerves more often than not, and the mother was everything and more). I’ve never been the type of person that an ending will taint how I view the show. A show can have a bad ending and I’ll be like great show horrible ending. However, I think because it was my fav show once upon a time, the ending made me view the show in a totally different way. Now I like micheal schur shows ( parks and Rec, Brooklyn nine nine, the good place, the office) cause they don’t hurt me like that lol
Omg I love that! I do that in stories too - add in particular details when I’m seriously pissy about how the show handled something. I talk to my friend Julie @ariavds about this a fair bit because we both loved How I Met Your Mother. I’m more like you - the ending really tainted how I feel about the show and as much as I try to forget it... I can’t totally. (Also totally agree with you on loving Robin, being annoyed by Ted, loving the mother, and just truly not understanding why the show did that fuckery at the end). Julie is able to dismiss the ending a bit and still rewatch it as her comfort show. I wish I could do that more.
And yessssssss to looking to those other shows now. Agreed agreed agreed!

~ Get to know me tag ~
Thank you @motherscarf for tagging me! I know it’s been months *whoops* but I didn’t have immediate/easy responses for a lot of these prompts because I’m bad at picking favorites of anything and I have a hard time answering questions that don’t have simple responses without spending paragraphs explaining every single detail of my thoughts (like I’m doing rn) until I feel like my response fully represents every aspect of my personality even though absolutely none of this is that deep AT ALL 😅
Favorite fictional character: there are a LOT of characters that I care about with my entire heart and I could never pick a favorite between them since they all give me around the same level of heart palpitations but the one that has done that to me for the longest amount of time is Nico DiAngelo from the Percy Jackson series 🖤
Top 5 movies: I don’t have many strong opinions about movies but the entire Harry Potter series will always make me feel things & I’ll watch them whenever I see they’re on so there’s 8 for you, with most other movies I don’t tend to wanna rewatch them very often at all so I can’t really consider them favorites but I do really enjoy the Hunger Games movies, Coraline, the Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, and I love watching The Lobster with friends because that brand of weird is right up my alley and I find it hilarious watching other people try to take it all in
Top 5 shows: this is the opposite of movies for me, I watch shows all the time and enjoy most of them so I can’t really rank them properly or pick just 5 but Survivor is my designated favorite and I also love Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Star vs. the Forces or Evil, The Owl House, Avatar the Last Airbender, Dark, Doctor Who, Orphan Black, The Umbrella Academy, The Good Place, Parks and Rec, I could recommend shows for dayyyyys
What continent I’m on: North America
Mental age: a mix between 12 and 65 probably
Nickname: the only one people call me seriously is Sash (rhymes w “gosh” not “ash”), but I’ve had many jokey nicknames that I would answer to like Sochi/Sachi, Sashimi, Sriracha (hence the username)
Favorite drink: root/birch beer, ginger beer, herbal tea, also water is always great especially w lemon
Room aesthetic: light purple & white centered color palate, maximilism kinda? I have a lot of stuff and not a lot of room so I have tons of bookshelves & other storage units filled to the brim w books and clothes and crafting supplies and trinkets but they’re (usually) neat and tidy because my brain needs organization and open space
Clothes style: in the warm seasons it’s lots of flowy dresses and skirts w tank tops and in the cold seasons it’s sweatpants and graphic or homemade tie dyed tshirts, unfortunately I do not have a cohesive style/aesthetic :(
Pronouns: she/her
Last thing I ate: chocolate cake :)
Top 5 bands: The Beatles, Fall Out Boy, The Staves, Panic! At the Disco, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
What stereotype I fall under: mom friend? person who thinks being an avid reader is a personality trait 🤪
As always I’m tagging @sqwood-tentl even though you don’t do these and also @coffeemakerlover @findingniamho here you go

RECS
Hello!
This is a long post that absolutely no one asked for and is more about ME than any of you. I consume media and pop culture VORACIOUSLY and this is the talent I can offer the world.
I would like to offer you an egg some recs in these trying times. I’m not saying you should stick your heads in the sand. It is good and necessary to keep up on (COVID-19, election, international developments/workplace stuff) news. But if you need a break or you’re stuck at home, or just bored, here’s some stuff I like and you might like too. Below the cut, there’s a few recs for: TV, Movies, Books, Music and Podcasts. (if I indicate where something is streaming, it only applies to the US, sorry!)  If you want to know if any of this stuff has a particular trigger, just hmu and I’ll tell you.
TV
Feel Good Sitcoms like Parks and Rec, The Good Place, The Office, and Schitt’s Creek:  All immensely watchable, often deliver on warm fuzzies. You’re probably living under a rock if you haven’t watched at least one of these.
Good Girls: (First two seasons streaming on Netflix and Hulu.) Starring Christina Hendricks, Retta and Mae Whitman, it’s a FANTASTIC show about a group of moms who get into crime. That’s all I’m saying. Oh, and that Rio will make you sweat in the privacy of your own home.
Love is Blind (and other reality show fodder): (LiB is on Netflix, so many other reality shows there, Hulu and streaming on youtube!) Look, LiB is the perfect set-up for us to ask “Are the straights okay?” the answer is no and you get to watch the drama of it all. As for the rest, let’s not pretend that reality TV hasn’t given us many of our best internet moments almost all of our reaction images. It’s fun, and now is a good time to watch.
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives: (Streaming on Hulu.) Guy Fierri is a nutcase, and the food at the places he visits always looks good. This is what I watch when hungover. 10/10.
Castlevania: (Season 3 just hit on Netflix.) It’s the weirdest season yet. This show is incredible. GREAT voice acting, excellent animation style. Dracula is rightfully pissed and wants all humans dead. Just watch, please.
The Witcher: (Netflix) You knew it was gonna show up. If you’re reading this, you probably follow me. You know what it is. Geralt’s voice and thighs have ruined me. And though they aren't main characters, it is nice to see so many Black people and other POC running around a fantasy world. We’re rarely included and while The Witcher doesn’t get this perfect, it's still pretty good.
The Proud Family: It’s on Disney+ and still THAT GIRL. My boyfriend and I were laughing our asses off a few weekends ago.
Good Trouble: (streaming on Hulu) OOh boy. This show is about twenty-somethings living in LA. it is pretty racially diverse, and pretty queer. It does some cool stuff with storytelling and is all-around good TV. It’s a show that’s not afraid to take a stand when it comes to racial, economic and social justice and I like that. It doesn’t nail EVERY storyline absolutely perfect, but it honestly TRIES, which is a cut above others.
Honorable mentions to: Sugar Rush, Zumbo’s Just Desserts, Chewing Gum, and Outlander.
****
MOVIES
Marvel: (Disney+) Look, if this is your THING, this may be a good time to start your chronological rewatch. I think some of these are littered across Netflix too.
Knives Out:  Available to rent. The closest thing we’ve had to a classic whodunit in YEARS. If you’re like me and you like this sort of thing, you just MAY see the plot miles before the ending. I PROMISE YOU, that DOES NOT MATTER. Great performances from an incredible cast, hilarious details, and once ay-gain, Daniel Craig’s Foghorn Leghorn accent. All pluses.
Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse: (Netflix) Its the perfect movie. Watch Miles Morales go from being just the coolest/dorkiest kid to the coolest/dorkiest Spiderman. LEAP OF FAITH.
Honorable mentions: anything Disney and Pixar, Hush, Coraline, all of John Mulaney’s comedy specials, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
****
MUSIC
Dopamine - Borns: Indie-pop love songs. Put the album on and hit play. No skips.
So So - Doja Cat: I think the whole album smacks but I honestly haven’t investigated too deeply YET. Stream Say So, tho.
Beyoncé
****
BOOKS
Shocking no one, I read a lot of romance novels. Here are a few:
Sinner by Sierra Simone: Look it up on goodreads. It’s either gonna flip your switch or not. If not, move on. This one made me weep. Never had that happen before while reading a romance so.
Just Like That - Nicola Rendell -- Very, actually funny. Again, most rom-coms don’t make me laugh out loud, but this one got me a couple of times.
ANYTHING BY TALIA HIBBERT but mostly: Get a Life, Chloe Brown: When I was done reading (on my kindle app) I hugged my phone.
Rafe by Rebekah Weatherspoon. Literally about a black woman being loved on. HELLO.
Non Romances:
Circe by Madeline Miller: It’s great. Just. Great. A retelling of the mythological Circe. The audiobook with Perdita Weeks is especially charming.
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik: an INTENSELY enthralling fairytale, that, at one point, had me trembling in the car on my way home bc the scene was so aptly written. Also, some Jewish rep!
****
PODCASTS (all stream on spotify, but if you google there are alternative ways to listen to them)
Keep IT! - funny, pop culture and LITE.
Thirst Aid Kit -  Nuanced, intelligent, hilarious conversation about hot men and very occasionally hot women. Hosts are both black women. They also have a tumblr.
The Read - this is a podcast that was podcasting before many of us even knew it was a thing we liked. Both hosts are black, both queer. Features a pop culture segment, listener letters (mess) and a dragging of something or someone.
Slate Spoiler Specials - an in-depth SPOILERY discussion of some movie or TV show. Just a fun conversation.
Narrative pods:
Alice Isn’t Dead. - A horror podcast about a woman who goes looking for her wife, who is assumed to be dead. The first episode had me shaking and I’m a horror junkie.
Thirty-Six Questions - A funny, musical podcast about a couple trying to salvage their relationship by doing that famous 36 Questions to Make You Fall in Love thing from the NYer.
Limetown - Deeply riveting thriller. A journalist is trying to figure out how--and why--a whole town of people disappeared. Also an FB Watch show, but idk her.

I also wasn’t a fan of the good place finale (no tea, no shade, no pink lemonade) and you’re the only other person I’ve seen who also didn’t like it. I can’t really fault the writer’s room because I’ve never been able to articulate what didn’t sit well with me and I don’t have a suggestion on what might have made it better but I’m wondering if you do?
oh OOF, honestly, i don’t think i am well-versed enough in philosophy to better articulate it, i am a cozy lil STEM major, and honestly a lot of this is informed by my christian belief-system and world view, and some of it just by being a person who loves characters deeply, so it might be that you didn’t like it for totally different reasons, but the putting the poorly-articulated philosophical arguments aside (really, Schur? Shakespeare writes 50 sequels but there’s not a single hip new author that died in the last century that Chidi might like? if everything at some point was going to be written it would have long since been written)
ALSO it’s been a long time and i don’t rewatch things so i don’t really remember everything perfectly, i’m just going off what i felt
honestly... It Was Just Kind Of Mean?
Idk if it was just me, but I sobbed through the entire thing. And not even happy cries. This whole show set up the idea that the ultimate goal was the Good Place together, and I’m not saying they needed to reach that goal in order to be fulfilled, because I didn’t really care about the Good Place part, I cared about the together part. The satisfying part of a found-family show is when the family has successfully found and loved each other, and now they get to be together. It’s one thing in a show like Parks and Rec or B99 where the found family is bound together in some way and faces relatively few challenges to that to have the last episode split them up in some way, but it’s different with the Good Place IMO because they weren’t bound together particularly well, they were often having to be apart from each other and forget each other and be without each other.
In the other Schur shows, the found family isn’t fighting to be together, they already are together, so splitting them up a little at the end is refreshing and interesting and shows they still love each other even when they’re apart in the future. With the Good Place, it’s the reverse.
We spent most of the season with Chidi not even remembering Eleanor! It wasn’t a granted that they were going to be together in the end. I think this is where Schur was so used to writing for more straight comedies that he forgot this was a dramedy, that there were stronger elements of tragedy and angst. It isn’t at all rewarding to skip over the parts we were all waiting for--the happy, gang’s-all-here moments that we had been yearning for during all of the not-happy-gang-is-torn-apart moments.
And also, what the FUCK was up with Chidi leaving Eleanor? I happily sat through all of the angst with her mom, all the pain of having Chidi forget her, and you’re going to make me sit there and watch Eleanor Who Gets Left watch her soulmate leave her? I’m SORRY? Honestly, I had philosophical complaints, but this is what really pissed me off. I can accept that some people don’t believe in an afterlife and think that the idea is flawed, but this just pissed me off even from a story perspective. why on earth would we want to watch our heroine live her worst nightmare in the last episode? And decide the best way to deal with that is to just...kill herself? What kind of message is that? That if the one person you thought would never leave you leaves you then that’s it, you’re just kind of done for? Maybe I’m just too sensitive but i just...hated that. I hated watching it.
And the false hope scene of Jason coming back to give Janet the necklace really frustrated me. Like, what was the point of that? Here I am, sobbing, because I have to watch all the characters that have went through hell basically die from each other without getting to see hardly ANY of the time they spent together, and you give me this little bit of false hope that maybe it’s not like that, maybe I am going to get the ending I fought for, but nope...it is not for me.
So idk...this probably isn’t even communicated very well, but the whole thing to me just felt at worst low key mean-spirited and at best very badly communicated.

hi! quick question: favorite tv shows, and why?
hi there! my favorite shows currently are parks and recreation and veep! i’ve been on a real sitcom kick lately lol! parks and rec is my favorite show of all time; it’s such a comforting piece of media. i love every single one of the characters and it continues to be funny - even on my millionth rewatch i still laugh aloud at various jokes :’) if you haven’t watched it i HIGHLY recommend it (and please dm me your reactions i desperately want to be on that journey with you). it’s just sunshine bottled in a show, clearly made with love and the faithful optimism that with hard work, passion, love, drive, and teamwork, the world can become a better place - and isn’t that a message we need to hear more often?
veep on the other hand is on the absolute other side of the spectrum. both parks and veep are about politics but take what i said about parks and rec’s optimism and throw that out of the window. basically everyone in veep is a shitty person but that makes it so much fun to watch. there is no sunshine in veep. it’s deeply biting political satire that doesn’t hold back but holy SHIT it is one of the funniest shows i’ve ever watched. the insults alone should’ve won them an emmy.
the good place, new girl, and 30 rock are other favorites.
tldr: i like political comedy shows that range from brilliantly optimistic to deeply nihilistic!

5 / 6 / 10 / 14 / 16 / 23 / 28 / 30 🤗
Ahh Isabel thank you!! 😍
5.  Name a movie that makes you genuinely laugh.
Definitely Galaxy Quest! I feel like there are others that I am missing but that was the first one to come to mind. Sci-fi hijinks always!
6. When’s the last time you felt like you were floating?
In a positive floating sense, when I got my summer internship acceptance with full funding!! Since it is my favorite place to work and there was only one position with funds - so that was a proud happy floaty moment
10. What is something (or someone) you’re in love with?
Aside from my person my boo thing, a something that I am in love with is my place in life at the moment. I am home, in school (despite how stressful it is), but I can visit my family any time I want (not in quarantine tho now ugh), in a house that I love – basically my place in life bc I really do love it
14. Talk about one of your most cherished childhood memories.
I’m in a very Star Trek state of mind lately, so remembering my first Star Trek convention and I got to meet Alexander Siddig and he was so kind to me and I cried with happiness because I was a tiny 13 year old (that whole convention was a blast and, yeah, just great)!!
16. Where do you feel most at home?
Overall, the midwest in the USA - I lived in the east coast for a bit and I never felt really at home. I need corn fields, no matter how boring that is since I really just like to be where there is no light pollution and I can see the stars!!
23. What’s your zodiac sign? Do you think you fit the general characteristics of that sign?
Pisces! And oh yeah, I am a dreamy and anxious person and anything I see about Pisces is Mood
28. Name a book you don’t mind reading over and over.
Again with my Big Nerd Mood, but all of the Star Trek Voyager relaunch novels are ones I read over and over - basically every summer I do a reread.
And often the Hunger Games trilogy!
30. What do you do to feel at peace?
I really love yoga - I’m not as good at the meditation part, but I love physically challenging myself. If I’m too tired for that, then rewatching all my fave shows - particularly Frasier (which is constantly played during any finals time) or star treks or parks and rec.
Also, hugging my cat!!
