Unfortunately Alexander II is portrayed as a predator in The Empress like in Victoria. Also have your opinions on Sisi evolved at all over the years?
You used the right word: predator. In Victoria, the choice to portray their relationship in such a light was absurd! She was SO smitten by Alexander : 'I felt so sad to take leave of this dear amiable young man, whom I really think (talking jokingly) I was a little in love with...' Even her granddaughter Alice wrote in her reminiscences that Alexander was : 'Grandmama Victoria's first beau'. The showrunners made the choice to show a fictive love between a young queen and her aging prime minister (I must confess that, at the time, I shipped them but for my defense: rufus sewell's face) rather than being accurate and show Victoria's massive crush on the heir of the Russian throne! cowards.
At least in Victoria, the actor looked the part while in The Empress, he is a caricature of what people expect Russians to look like: bearded, unpolished, gruff, predatory. It is sad how strongly this image is embedded in the popular imagination. Utterly frustrating especially when you know how charmed people were by Alexander. Di Borgo, Nicholas I's ambassador to the UK once wrote: 'I was filled with admiration for his bearing, his reserve, his easy manner and, at the same time, his kindness, which proclaimed itself in every word and in all of his manners.'
justice for my boy and his lil mustache!

As for Elisabeth, it did and I think it will keep evolving as I grow old. As far back as I can remember, Elisabeth is my first historical crush. I was very young when I found in my village library a photo album on her. I kept borrowing this book for months. I was too young to understand the life of this woman, but boy was I enthralled by the paintings and photographs. My next encounter with Elisabeth happened during my teenage years but I failed to really grasp the complexity of her character and I moved on pretty quickly. Maybe, also because the two bios I had were not very good (one was written by Jean des Cars). Then, I came accross her path from time to time, especially when I began to learn about Charlotte, her sister-in-law, for whom I have an enduring love. Things that I couldn't understand before, finally made sense. She had so many facets and was a fascinating figure that could be quite frustrating at times, occasionally infuriating. But there is also something deeply moving about her with her restlessness and sensitivity. Thanks to @oscarmarinas, who is an expert on Elisabeth, I got a copy of her biography by Brigitte Hamann, can't wait to receive it and dive in her life once again!

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.

it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.

the way people online talk about autism is getting really weird, like do they know that neurotypicals still have interests? that someone being passionate about a hobby doesn't mean they're autistic? you guys know that right
